Notes from the Hazzan
When Words Cannot Speak
In the past, as Cantor, I would often write articles about synagogue music, music in general, and the arts. But lately, as acting-Rabbi, I often find myself gravitating towards content designed to uplift the congregation spiritually. As we close out 2024, I would like to thank those of you, who over the years provided such positive feedback over these articles.
As we begin the new year of 2025, I am returning to my musical roots, which are close to my heart. I am often asked why most of our services are sung? If you have visited my office, you may have noticed amongst the clutter, a magnet on my piano which states, “MUSIC SPEAKS WHEN WORDS CANNOT.” I always keep that slogan close at hand, since as a Hazzan I strongly believe that. For us Jews, the tradition of a sung, as opposed to spoken service dates back at least to the Temple in Jerusalem, where the Levites played the leading role in chanting the services through Levitical choirs and orchestras.
I vividly recall many years back when I was Hazzan in Stamford, Connecticut, an elderly congregant who attended synagogue fastidiously and had a beautiful voice, had a stroke that almost completely paralyzed her. When I visited her in the hospital, I began singing to her. She loved Yiddish folk songs and her favorite prayer was Sim Shalom. So I sang those softly to her. Much to the shock of her family, staff and myself, she began to mimic me and sing along, a little off-key perhaps, but who cared? She was otherwise unable to speak or do almost anything. And yet, she was able to sing and hum along with me!
As I have slowly begun to downsize my packed office, I came across an article I had saved from the Toledo Blade of October 11, 2020, entitled, “MUSIC ON YOUR MIND.” The article quotes Eugenia Costa Giomi, Professor of Music Education at the Ohio State University, who said, “Just like the brain looks different when processing information, the structure of the brain changes when we listen to music.” She stated that there is a lot of research that has shown that even though there is no cure for Parkinson’s disease, music can help. Something as regular as walking can be quite difficult, but a strong musical beat can help people learn how to keep their balance. People often recover certain memories after traumatic brain injuries, through the power of music.
Research has shown that different parts of the brain are activated when we hear a song we like, because the limbic system that controls emotion is much more active. No surprise that we experience joyous feelings when we hear our favorite music, or the opposite when we hear sad music with negative associations. In a synagogue context, I often cite the power of the Kol Nidrei melody to awaken strong emotions within us, more than the text. The text is a somewhat dry formula of vow nullification, yet the melody often stirs memories and nostalgic associations, its plaintive beauty passing dramatically through musical transitions of keys, scales and modes. How often do we end the service with a rousing Adon Olam, and the melody lingers in our ears and minds way into Kiddush?
It is no surprise that we use music for educational purposes. Memorization and learning language is enhanced though song, for example the alphabet song in English and Hebrew. Some of you may be aware that I am undergoing chemotherapy every few months. I lie in a hospital bed for two hours, rotating my body every fifteen minutes. It is difficult to make it through without a strong distraction. Our daughter Jackie downloaded a long list of beautiful songs of all genres both Jewish and secular, which I access on my cell phone through the Spotify app. Some songs are accompanied by family pictures. This gets me through every time.
As we approach the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, I am reminded of one of the most powerful musical quotes I have ever heard. My late grandmother said to my mother in the Warsaw Ghetto, as they were exiting a performance of the operetta Peer Gynt, “As long as we Jews are still making music, they will never be able to destroy us!”
Hazzan Ivor Lichterman
Better Communication
Shalom Chaverim, I hope you all enjoyed a Happy Hannukah, a joyful, optimistic New Year, and a well-earned rest in between. I am often asked who to approach with ideas and questions related to our shul. Last year we published the names and titles of the Executive Committee and committee chairs, but did not include email addresses or telephone numbers to limit the circulation of personal information. This year we have implemented a simple technical fix where each position is assigned an appropriate CBI email address from which mail is forward to whoever holds that post. Rather than publish a new address list each year, we need only revise the forwarding list on our server.
The initial forwarding list is as follows: president@cbitoledo.org

CBI Clergy Search - Update
Dear Fellow Congregants,
The Search committee is excited to give you a brief update on our Rabbi search! We have already received responses from several candidates.
Meira and Ian have had preliminary discussions with each potential candidate to get a feel for their experience and expectations. Soon, we will have the full committee speak with the viable candidates to address a broad spectrum of questions. We will then get input and feedback from the full committee.
We still have a way to go in this process as many candidates don’t begin their search for a position until late December, into January and February. Therefore, we are hopeful our candidate pool will expand in the coming weeks and give our committee and shul more individuals to consider. Please feel free to reach out to Meira or Ian with any questions or input you may have, and especially if you have any intriguing leads for candidates that we may pursue.

Uncomfortable Conversations With A Jew
by Emmanuel Acho & Noa Tishby
Sunday, January 26, 2025 10:30 AM at CBI
This New York Times bestseller offers a timely, disarmingly honest, and thoughtprovoking investigation into antisemitism that connects the dots between the tropes and hatred of the past to our current complicated moment. For Emmanuel Acho and Noa Tishby, no question about Jews is off-limits. They go there. They cover Jews and money. Jews and power. Jews and privilege. Jews and white privilege. The Black and Jewish struggle. Emmanuel asks, Did Jews kill Jesus? To which Noa responds, “Why are Jewish people history’s favorite scapegoat?” They unpack Judaism itself: Is it a religion, culture, a peoplehood, or a race? And: Are you antisemitic if you’re anti-Zionist? The questions—and answers—might make you squirm, but together, they explain the tropes, stereotypes, and catalysts of antisemitism in America today. The topics are complicated and Acho and Tishby bring vastly different perspectives. Tishby is an outspoken Israeli American. Acho is a mild-mannered son of a Nigerian American pastor. But they share a superpower: an uncanny ability to make complicated ideas easy to understand so anyone can follow the straight line from the past to our immediate moment—and then see around corners. Acho and Tishby are united by the core belief that hatred toward one group is never isolated: if you see the smoke of bigotry in one place, expect that we will all be in the fire.

Notes from our Principal
In December, our students had the opportunity to make Hanukkah cards for gift bags to give some of our congregants who are in senior assisted living homes. CBI volunteers assembled Hanukkah goodie bags and delivered them to let them know their CBI family is thinking of them during this holiday season. Additional goodie bags were also given to JFS for Jewish families.
It was great to see everyone enjoy our special Hanukkah morning Shabbat. We celebrated with trivia games and a delicious Hanukkah themed kiddush lunch.
After the student's Winter Break ends, they will return mid-January for regular Sunday school classes.
We are looking forward to visits from the Shin shinim representatives coming to visit in February and April. If your family is interested in hosting one or both of them for the weekend please contact KBrody@cbitoledo.org. Stay tuned for more details regarding these exciting visits.

If you have an upcoming special birthday, wedding anniversary, anniversary of your bar or bat mitvah or other milestone simcha, consider sponsoring a Shabbat Kiddush at CBI and share the joy with your congregational family. Contact the office at 419-517.8400 or email gmallin@ cbitoledo.org for more details.
DONATING RELIGIOUS OBJECTS TO CBI
If you are downsizing your home, be aware that it is permissible to throw away old kippot. Unfortunately, we cannot accept old books on Jewish subjects from your library. We would be glad to receive your old prayer books, tallitot or other religious objects for burial.
RETURNING CBI PRAYER BOOKS
If you have a borrowed a red Sim Shalom weekday prayer book from the chapel and are no longer using it, please return it to CBI. Quantities in the shul are very low and we do not have enough for services.

On your Television: You can also access the live stream services through your television if you have a "smart" TV, Roku or streaming stick which gives you access to YouTube.
• Click on the YouTube icon on your TV.
• When YouTube opens, search for "Congregation B'nai Israel - Sylvania, Ohio".
• Be sure to click on the listing that has the photo with Jewish star (see photo above).
• We recommend that you "subscribe" to the channel so you can easily locate the live stream for future services. We also highly recommend connecting to the live stream services on your TV as it is the most immersive and closest experience, short of being in the synagogue.
