Tisha B'Av

Tisha B’Av, the ninth day of the month of Av, is the major day of communal mourning in the Jewish calendar occurring in either July or August. Although a large number of disasters are said to have befallen the Jews on this day, the major commemoration is of the destruction of the First and Second Temples in Jerusalem in 586 B.C.E. and 70 C.E., respectively. Central to the observance of this day is fasting.

Good News

It is likely that you are reading this article during the period in our Jewish calendar referred to as ‘the three weeks of mourning.’ These weeks link two days of fasting - the 17th of the Hebrew month Tammuz (a half-fasting day) to the 9th of Av, the latter a fast day lasting more than 24 hours. They commemorate the destruction of both Jerusalem Temples thousands of years ago, and two subsequent exiles amongst other tragic events of our history. In our secular calendar, they occur this year from 23rd July to August 13th. Parties, celebrations, concerts, and particularly weddings are avoided during this sad period.

Let’s change the subject for a moment. Because of my ongoing medical issues, I have been home much more than usual. When I am home, especially if Jan is not around, I usually have either the radio or TV on. The radio is tuned to WGTE FM91, the Classic Music station. When the TV is on, it is not because I am watching a particular program during the daytime. There aren’t many I am interested in, plus I am busy doing other things. Rather, it is just for background company. My default channels are news, as I am always watching closely for the latest news from Israel, the USA, South Africa, or anywhere in the world for that matter.

Problem is that all of the news is bad! Channels like CNN, MSNBC, Fox, OAN, etc. report negative stories 24/7, which are often hyped up and repetitive. ‘Talking heads’ and so-called ‘experts’ are paid to speculate before all the facts are known, just to fill in the time, so that these channels can justify 24/7 news. As Wolf Blitzer of CNN calls unfolding events, “the Situation Room.” After a while I just turn it off, for how much bad news can one watch? Whether from Israel, or domestically the American political process, justice system, and upcoming election, shootings and attempted assassinations, often I feel it is better just not to watch.

Recently I remarked to Jan that I thought it an excellent idea for some media outlet to come up with a ‘good news channel.’ 24 hours every day report only good news stories! How inspirational would that be! A ‘feel good’ channel on your TV, all day long! That I would watch, for it would provide the affirmation and reassurance of humanity’s goodness that I and many others sorely yearn for these days. These three weeks of mourning in our calendar, make the need for good news so much more pressing.

In researching this issue, I discovered that there are some programs of good news, but they are few-and-far between. One such program I came across is called ‘KINDNESS 101’ and aired on CBS weeknight evening news. The inspiring program features broadcast journalist Steve Hartman and two of his children, Emmett and Meryl, in what is described by CBS as “a series built on sharing stories of kindness and good character and highlighting the people who have mastered both.” (Steve graduated from Bowling Green State in 1985.)

Each segment of 'Kindness 101' models a different inspirational trait, usually described in one word. I began to document some traits of past programs. What follows is a list of these in alphabetical order, as I believe this list to be revelatory: Altruism, appreciation, comfort, compassion, courage, creativity, determination, embracing wonder, empathy, encouragement, enthusiasm, fortitude, friendship, generosity, honesty, humanity, joy, justice, kindness, leadership, modesty, perseverance, positivity, purpose, reciprocity, remembrance, respect, reverence, sacrifice, self-improvement, service, ‘stick-toitiveness,’ tact, thankfulness, and vision.

During these three depressing weeks of Jewish mourning, and with the High Holidays fast approaching, a time of deep spiritual introspection, I believe that this a wonderful formula of positive human traits for us to model in our daily lives, much of it lacking both here in the US and everywhere.

Now for that 24/7 Good News Channel…!

Constitutional Convention

The CBI Constitution, more properly titled the ‘Articles of Incorporation’, is seriously out of date. I am unable to determine when it was originally drafted, but it was certainly decades ago when our congregation was much larger and much younger. Although it has been amended recently to allow a smaller board, much of the document is unworkable today. For example, the Articles specify Vice Presidents for Administration, Religious Affairs, and Education, and Youth Activities. Those of you with sharp eyes will have noticed that these are not the titles used in the slate of Officers and Trustees presented at our annual meeting (Administration, Youth Activities and Ritual Affairs). Furthermore, the Articles call for standing committees for Education, Facility, Finance, Membership, Nominating, Religious Affairs and Youth Commission. We simply don’t have enough members to populate all these committees, and several would have little to do.

As an interim measure we are adjusting the responsibilities of the Executive Committee to reflect reality. As Vice President of Administration, Kris Mann will retain his role as Vice President for Education and Youth Activities. The Articles do not provide a voice on the Executive Committee for the leaders other programming activities such as the Program Committee and Adult Education. As Vice President of Activities Josh Sherman will be that voice and help coordinate and promote all CBI activities. The Ritual Affairs Committee, presently led by Howard Moskowitz, will remain unchanged Although pragmatic, this ad hoc rearrangement takes us yet further from the text of the Articles of Incorporation. To that end, I would like to initiate the process of writing an entirely new Constitution that reflects our mission, our reality and our plans for the future. Please let me know if you are interested in helping with this challenging endeavor.

Remembering Our Loved Ones

For many of us, one of the most meaningful parts of our services during the High Holy Days is Yizkor on Yom Kippur. It is at that time when we turn our thoughts to our loved ones who have left this earth. We reflect upon their lives, as well as the lives of members of our congregation, and family and friends. In addition, we take the time to formally recognize the Martyrs of our people, especially the Six Million who were murdered during the Shoah, and those who gave their lives for Israel.

Each year, we print a Yizkor Book which contains the Yizkor Service, a list of the synagogue’s Memorial Plaques, and a

The

memorial to the Six Million and Israeli victims. Not only is this book substantial and permanent, but those who wish may take it home for use during the year.

I urge you to take advantage of this opportunity, as a way of remembering those dearest to us, and at the same time helping our congregation. An order form is printed below.

The response last year was wonderful! I hope that you will participate this year.

1863: In a small Creole cottage in New Orleans, an ingenious young Black woman named Stella embroiders intricate maps on repurposed cloth to help enslaved men flee and join the Union Army. Bound to a man who would kill her if he knew of her clandestine activities, Stella has to hide not only her efforts but her love for William, a Black soldier and a brilliant musician. Meanwhile, in New York City, a Jewish woman stitches a quilt for her husband, who is stationed in Louisiana with the Union Army. Between abolitionist meetings, Lily rolls bandages and crafts quilts with her sewing circle for other soldiers, too, hoping for their safe return home. But when months go by without word from her husband, Lily resolves to make the perilous journey South to search for him. As these two women risk everything for love and freedom during the brutal Civil War, their paths converge in New Orleans, where an unexpected encounter leads them to discover that even the most delicate threads have the capacity to save us. Loosely inspired by the authors' family histories, this stunning novel will stay with readers for a long time.

Debbie Perlmutter will be the discussion leader for this book club meeting. RSVP to Ellen Federman at efederman@ sbcglobal.net by Sunday, September 22, 2024.

The attendees of the WCBI Rosh Chodesh Tammuz program enjoyed a nature-filled excursion touring the delightful gardens of fellow WCBI members, Mary Lou Dorf, Helen Michaels, and Nancy Goldberg.

After the garden tour, everyone returned to CBI for a delicious luncheon and High Tea. Amid beautifully decorated tables, the artfully plated meal of smoked salmon, egg salad, and cucumber sandwiches was a treat for the eyes and the palate. Dessert was a selection of hot teas, fresh-made scones with lemon curd, strawberry jam, and marscapone cheese, as well as an assortment of petite macarons.

The Tikkun Olam for this program were specific toiletry items donated to the JFS Food Bank. The requested items were provided in abundance thanks to the generosity of the program participants.
