SUKKOT, SYMBOL OF LIFE You are likely reading this article right before Yom Kippur. Since I already wrote about the High Holidays in our previous September bulletin, I want to instead focus straight ahead on what happens after Yom Kippur, “what we can do to sustain a little longer the spiritual “high” of the High Holidays?”

Most people think that the High Holidays are the time when we pray for life, as in mee yichye umee yamut – who will live and who will die? In a sense that is true.

But as we focus on Sukkot that occurs a mere five days after Yom Kippur, barely giving us a chance to recuperate, or time to put up a sukkah, we might think at first glance that Sukkot, called z’man simchateinu – the season of our joy, seems to be in complete contrast to Yom Kippur.

But further examination reveals some commonality that could elevate Sukkot’s relevance for us. Thereby I hope to help you sustain a little longer that special feeling of the High Holidays that you were hopefully left with after Yom Kippur, and show you ways you can act upon this feeling.

RABBINIC INSIGHTS FROM RABBI JASON Our Sacred Home: Here, There and Everywhere One of my favorite jokes is the one about the two trouble-making sixth graders at religious school. Anytime there was misbehavior in class, it was likely because of Scotty and Jake. In the middle of an unusually rowdy class one day, the teacher couldn’t take it anymore and sent the two boys to see the rabbi. The rabbi told Jake to wait outside in the hall and invited Scotty to enter the rabbi’s office. The rabbi sat Scotty down across a huge desk, and he sat down on the other side. For five minutes, they just sat and stared at each other. Finally, the rabbi pointed his finger at Scotty and asked with a loud voice, “Where is God?” Scotty said nothing. Again, in a louder tone, the rabbi pointed at the boy and asked, “Where is God?” Again, Scotty said nothing. Then the rabbi leaned across the desk, pointed his finger at Scotty, and shouted, “For the third time, Scotty, where is God?”

“If God is everywhere, why then did God require a physical dwelling place?”

The Kotzker Rebbe responded that the answer to the question “Where is God?” is that God can be found wherever we let God in. I have no doubt that God is present here in our congregation.

The warm, welcoming, and beautiful sanctuary is perfect for our prayer services and the entire synagogue building is ideal for our programming, but we have also created a sacred place in which God’s divine presence can be felt.

In fact, the Divine Presence penetrates our soul inside and outside of our synagogue building. The energy of our community opens up the door to the power of God’s presence on so many occasions. God is indeed a part of our lives if we let God in. Our synagogue building will help us feel more spiritual and more aware of God’s divine presence in the coming year. No matter what activity you take part in within the walls of the synagogue or outside of the synagogue building, I hope you will be mindful of God’s presence.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Our High Holidays or High Holy Days which are generally considered to be Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are meant to be a time of reflection about our attitudes and actions toward one another, the care of our environment and our Jewish faith. As I write this column, I’m reflecting on the many things I haven’t done this past year such as my assurances to my friends and family that I would call and make arrangements to get together. Also there are friends and acquaintances who I know might have needed assistance with transportation but I have often lacked the time (or so I tell myself) to make a call.

Perhaps you have a bit of guilt too for the things you haven’t done or the things you have done but now regret. We can decide now to make changes in our lives to more positively affect our relationships and actions toward others, to treat our environment with more care, and to act with more forethought to achieve a more positive result. IT’S NOT TOO LATE. Many in our congregation are acting with their hands and feet to assist our synagogue community.

Spending more time at Congregation B’nai Israel (CBI to us insiders) has enabled me to observe with wonder the generosity of time, contributions and efforts by so many members of our congregation. For example, the women of our new Sisterhood 2.0 have prepared and delivered special gift baskets to several families who have celebrated the births of new babies.

Our monthly bulletins and mailings to our members are always proof read, collated and assembled by numerous congregants who spend hours supplementing our sparse but efficient office staff. Silver torah mantels have been polished, carpets cleaned, roof leaks repaired, the community garden has been harvested and USY/Kadima held their first meeting and held a fun filled car wash.

Men’s Club and our Cultural Committee held their first movie night and Sisterhood had a fabulous opening meeting.

We should also be grateful to our staff lead by Cantor Ivor Lichterman, Office Administrator Michelle Carr, Outreach Coordinator Rhoda Miller, Religious School Principal Kim Brody, Building Services Manager Larry Johnson and Kitchen Manager Karen McQuade. These fine people are the gears that keep our synagogue operating running smoothly.

On behalf of my wife Anne and our family, we wish you a sweet New Year of peace, happiness and good health.

DAVID S. STONE RELIGIOUS SCHOOL Religious School is off to an amazing start to an incredible school year. Our first day activities included a Skype session with our friends from our Partnership region in the Western Galilee. This session was a very meaningful discussion with the teens from the Teen To Teen delegation who were here in Toledo in May with our students. Our students discussed everything from favorite musicians and television shows, to their experience this past summer with the Gaza War. They had very insightful discussions about how the war is affecting all of us as Jews. We are looking forward to meeting with our friends through video chat on a regular basis.

We also had a delicious back-to-school picnic prepared by Marc Glasser, Erin Labbie and Stuart Brody. It was great to catch up with our families after the summer.

The Kadima and USY kids had a car wash to start off their year, and managed to have a great time as well!

Men’s Club Completes Sukkah Build in Record Time Guys, The Men’s Club would like to thank everyone for their hard work and dedication in making our Sukkah Build such a success.

A record time of 3 hours!! Being at B’nai at 8:00 am was difficult, but with a fine breakfast spread, fun conversation and super weather, this was a great Men’s Club project.
