Notes from the Cantor

“N’SHAI CHAYIL - WOMEN OF VALOR” I am writing this article right after Purim and days after Sisterhood Shabbat, with the afterglow of these two special women-led events in our congregation still warming our hearts.

The Purimspiel was written, directed and produced by our own Deena and Meira Zucker, as they have for the past few years. We are fortunate and blessed to have such homegrown talent. We were treated to a most enjoyable Purim celebration which seems to get better and better every year.

Yasher koach and deep appreciation to all participants, as well as to parents who made it possible for your children to be part of such a positive Jewish experience.

Sisterhood Shabbat was truly an uplifting experience.

Chaired by Harriet Davis and Gail Kwait who worked hard to get people involved, congregants enjoyed beautiful davening, fluent Torah and Haftorah chanting, divrei Torah, readings and honors all led by our wonderful women. Fagie Benstein’s informative drash, “Bringing Them out of the Shadows” on six outstanding women who changed Jewish history, was the impetus for this article which continues the theme of extraordinary women’s involvement in our congregation. Yasher koach and heartfelt thanks to all the many women who made Sisterhood Shabbat so special.

Once again spearheaded by the women of our congregation, particularly Sharon Stein, Cathy Sperling and Fagie Benstein, our 150th anniversary committee has been hard at work planning a full year’s celebration in 2016-2017. This remarkable milestone in our congregation’s history will be marked by events that we hope will involve all of you, and something of interest to everyone.

Like the above described events, from Purim which we just celebrated, to Pesach which will be here in days, to Hanukkah and other watersheds of Jewish history, the women heroines of our People have emerged to change our destiny. Esther is as much the hero of Purim as her cousin Mordechai; Miriam as much the hero of Pesach as her younger brother Moses; Hannah as much the hero of Hanukkah as the Maccabees (as told in the second book of Maccabees) just to cite a few examples.

After Israel’s historic redemption from Egyptian slavery and the crossing of the Sea, Miriam, referred to in this

context as “hanevia – the prophetess” (Exodus 15: 22), took a timbrel and led the women in song and dance. The great commentator Rashi, in response to the question of where the women suddenly got these timbrels, states that the women were so confident that God would make miracles to redeem Israel, that they came prepared to celebrate with timbrels from Egypt!

Behind the scenes in our own congregation, we have our own Miriam - Miriam Beckerman - who tirelessly volunteers countless hours to coordinate our kitchen, shopping, arranging kiddushim and all events involving food, whether Purim, Sisterhood Shabbat, Pesach, Rockin Shabbat etc, keeping our kitchen immaculate especially in the absence of full time custodial staff, and ensuring we are always well fed. Previously this was coordinated by Hope Davis for several years. Not always visible to those who come and go from our daily congregational activities, these special women also deserve our strongest yasher koach and gratitude!

So as we sit round our beautiful holiday tables to observe our own seders this Pesach, let us lift a 5th cup to Miriam the Prophetess. Let us acknowledge the Esthers and Hannahs and all the women in our congregation, like Phyllis Diamond (and many whose names I have not mentioned) as well as in our own personal lives, without whom, let’s face it, our Pesach seders would be nothing like they are. We owe so much to all these women of valor, not only on Pesach, but also on Mothers Day and all year through!

And who knows? Maybe, just maybe the 2016 US presidential election will produce some viable women candidates, who, if one is elected, may just help the world become a more peaceful place. As the Talmud states (Kiddushin 2b), “It is the way of men to wage war, not the way of women.”

I look forward to seeing many of you at our special Service of Rededication on the first day of Pesach Shabbat April 4th, marking exactly 6 months since Rosh Hashanah.

Rabbinic Insights from Rabbi Jason Wishing a Kosher Passover The preparation for Passover is very involved and can post challenges. With so many intricate requirements, it’s enough to drive us crazy. For weeks leading up to the holiday, we’re all busy planning and preparing to observe the great miracle of the liberation of our ancestors from slavery in Egypt. With the great expenditure of time and energy -- not to mention the financial burden -- in advance of Passover, we often lose touch with the important feeling of joy and celebration that is an integral part of Passover.

I’m often asked if it is possible or tolerable to pay less attention to the technical requirements of Passover and just try to enjoy the festival? My answer is always the same -- that we should all do as much as we can to observe this interesting and complicated holiday without making it so stressful that we come to resent this eight day holiday. From the cleaning our homes of chametz (remember, dirt isn’t chametz!) to making sure we follow the seder, there is much to do.

There are many people who like to brag that their seder goes until the wee hours of the night, but sometimes that just means they took a very long time to eat

their dinner at the seder. The most important aspect of Passover in my opinion is to have everyone at your seder table derive as much benefit from the retelling of our age old story. Passover should be an enjoyable holiday and one in which we find meaning from reliving the exodus from Egyptian slavery through the narrative that we retell each year.

On Passover, many of us wish each other a Chag Kasher V’Sameach. It’s the only festival of the year in which we include the word “kasher” (from kosher) in our greeting. It isn’t that we’re simply wishing our friends and family that everything they eat and every item in their home should be kosher during the eight day holiday. Rather, we’re wishing them prayers of contentment and wholeness. Not only should our Passover be happy (sameach), it should also rise to the level of perfection.

May we all enjoy such an experience this Passover.

Congregation B’nai Israel Celebrates Purim with The Sound of Shushan Purimspiel

Message from the President As winter reluctantly gives way to spring it’s time to shift gears and think about the gentler side of Toledo and Sylvania. We Jews often think of seasons in relation to our holidays; winter-Hanukkah, spring--Purim and Passover, summer-Shavuot and autumn--the High Holidays.

This year Passover begins on April 3 and Cantor Lichterman has thoughtfully planned eight days of services at CBI. Hopefully you will be able to join us for at least some of the services we have planned.

On behalf of Anne and I, we send Happy Passover greetings and best wishes to our entire congregation.

Also on April 24 we once again have planned another Shabbat Luck dinner to which our members and their families are invited. Several of our congregants have generously opened their homes for a potluck dinner, which will provide an opportunity for their

guests to get to know each other better outside of our synagogue. It’s always fun for the adults and the kids.

Our David S. Stone Religious School will be confirming six of its students at our Confirmation program on Sunday, May 3. Congratulations to our students, proud families and their teachers for their hard work and dedication.

Finally, mark you calendar for a fantastic musical program on Sunday, May 31 at which time B’nai Israel will present “Malt Shop Memories” performed by the Lake Plains Chorus who have thrilled audiences throughout Northwestern Ohio. Our congregant Paul Rothschild brings his fabulous barbershop chorus of more than 25 men to share their joy of a cappella singing with our attendees. This event, which you won’t want to miss will be a fundraiser for the purpose of our Religious School and Scholarships. Look for more information on this program in your mailbox and bulletin.

Pesach Observances Siyyum Bechorim, Fast of the First Born Because the first-born of the Israelites were saved from the tenth plague, tradition requires that all first-born Jewish males fast from Erev Pesach until the Seder.

The fast is called Taanit Bechorim. However, the law states that when any Jew hears the completion of a tractate of the Rabbinic Literature, it is cause to celebrate. Such a completion will take place on Friday, April 3rd at 7:00 a.m. at Congregation B’nai Israel.

It is called a Siyyum Bechorim, and those who participate are exempted from the fast.

All are welcome to this service; it is not limited to the first-born.

Mehirat Hametz—The Selling of Hametz Preparation for Passover

The sale of hametz is conducted between a representative of the community (the synagogue) and a non-Jew.After Passover the hametz is repurchased by the Jewish community. If you would like Cantor Lichterman to sell your hametz please fill out the form and return it to the synagogue office not later than Friday, April 3, immediately following morning minyan.

The term hametz is applied not only to foods, but also to the dishes and utensils in which the foods are prepared or served during the year. “Any manner of hametz (leavened food or utensils) owned by a Jew during the Passover holiday is forbidden to use forever.”

Since conditions make it impossible to literally fulfill the Biblical command to destroy all leavened products, our sages instituted a practice called Mehirat Hametz, the selling of hametz, so the Torah’s command would not be completely ignored. Jews are reminded of the necessity to divest themselves of ownership of hametz and make their home ritually ready.

Don’t Sell All your Hametz!

The ceremony of removing leaven (bedikat Hametz) is to take place Thursday, April 2, 2015. Hametz may be eaten until 10:00 a.m. on Friday, April 3, 2015. The Passover home atmosphere is created each year by the traditional practice of thoroughly cleansing the home in all parts, and by the removal of hametz, or leaven, in preparation for the welcoming of Pesach, as well as throughout the Passover days, both at home and away.

When cleaning out our cupboard and pantry in preparation for Pesach, consider donating unopened packages of hametz and canned goods to a food pantry. Items such as crackers, rice, cookies, lentils, tuna, and peanut butter will be gratefully accepted by these organizations and passed on to those whose cupboards are empty. Let those who are hungry this Passover season share in your celebration by receiving food that you might otherwise sell. Food can be brought to the synagogue where a receptacle will be clearly marked.

Welcome New Members Adam Levine, Ph.D., came to Toledo from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in New York City, as the recipient of the Toledo Museum of Art’s Mellon Fellowship. Following this prestigious 2-year appointment, he accepted the position of Assistant Director.

Dr. Levine received degrees from Dartmouth College and from the University of Oxford where he was a Rhodes Scholar.

Many of us will remember him from his captivating adult education program at Congregation B’nai Israel this past year.

Judy Blinn moved to the Toledo area a few years ago. She was an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Michigan for twenty-nine years. She has three adult children and two grandchildren who are in college. Her favorite Jewish holiday is Rosh Hashanah as she enjoys seeing her friends in the synagogue. She remembers her Confirmation as being a meaningful rite of passage and learned a great deal from her rabbi in preparation for Confirmation. Her hobbies include sailing, ballet, and dance.

ORAL HISTORIES

Oral Histories will begin after Passover. The committee plans on interviewing as many members of the congregation as possible. Interviews will be videotaped and transcribed.

Everyone who is interviewed will review and approve the final transcript before it is printed and archived. Excerpts of interviews may be incorporated into the 150th celebration. The Honor | Celebrate | Inspire interviews will be archived and the oral histories will become a permanent record of the history of Congregation B’nai Israel. We have had some amazing programming at David S. Stone Religious School. The Torch Project- M’Dor L’Dor-light from generation to generation was a meaningful experience for all involved. This was a wonderful intergenerational program which showed our tremendous support for Israel. Students made canvas torches to be sent to Israel for display.

Our 8-10th grade classes continue to skype regularly with our friends in our Partnership region. We are continuing to grow our relationship with them and we are looking forward to visiting them next year on our confirmation trip. Last month our Wednesday B’nai Israel students and students from Shomer Emunim had the opportunity to meet with Erfrat from the Partnership region to learn about Israel through music.

It was a great time for all.

Our 8th -10th graders had the rare opportunity to meet with a Jewish student from France. Quinn Murphy and Jeremy Davis’ cousin, Gabrielle Davis, was here from Paris and shared her experiences about living in France. The students had a lot of great questions and this led to an interesting discussion for all involved.

As an important component of learning about Jewish Lifecycle Events, the B’nai Mitzvah class visited the mikvah at Etz Chayim. A geniza trip planned to Beth Shalom Cemetery to bury books and religious articles. This has been an busy year for this class.

Youth and Education News Hello everyone. Spring is finally here and the USY and Kadima kids have been participating in many exciting activities.

The Specialty Convention that took place from February 26-March 1 went very well. One Kadima and six (6) USY kids had a great time attending this convention. They participated in various service projects.

On March 7, the kids had a sleepover at B’nai and had a great time. On March 8, they attended the Purim carnival sponsored at Shomer and over 250 parents and children had a festive time at this very successful event.

The USY kids helped sell tickets for prizes and enjoyed the festivities, even as tired as they were. Thanks to everyone who volunteered at the Purim carnival and who purchased Purim tickets in advance. All the proceeds from the ticket sales went to USY and Kadima.

On March 13-15, two (2) of our Seniors went to a Senior retreat. This was especially memorable for them as this was their last Senior retreat they will be attending.

On March 27, the Musher –Eizenmans hosted a Kadima and USY Shabbos dinner at their home. Everyone brought a delicious dish of food and no one left hungry. On April 16-19, the Regional Convention will take place at Camp Wise for the eighth (8th) graders and USY. The kids will be leaving to Regionals on Thursday afternoon and will return on Sunday. There is scholarship money available for the Regional convention so please complete a scholarship

application form at the office and submit the application as soon as possible.

I would like to remind everyone that B’nai offers many scholarships to attend Jewish youth camps and Jewish youth programs.

Non B’nai Israel scholarships include (a) the Diller Foundation that offers scholarships to Jewish teens actively involved in Tikum Olam projects. Applications can be obtained on line at www.dillerteenawards.com and (b) One Happy Camper that provides up to $1,000.00 scholarship funds for a USY summer program.
