During the summer months, it may appear that there is not much activity at Congregation B’nai Israel. But less conspicuously there is much planning and preparation occurring as we begin our New Year on September 24, 2014. The High Holidays typically signal the beginning of a cycle of programs at our synagogue which will continue through the following summer.

In August and September representatives from different areas of congregational interests will come together to discuss ideas for programming and events. Also, on August 24, our wonderful board of trustees will join together at a retreat to find ways to further strengthen their spiritual and organizational commitments.

As CBI president I have come to learn that our membership is very diverse in both age and our approach to Judaism.

Some of you are deeply religious and others are at the other extreme. However, most will fall somewhere in between. Each of our members relates to our congregation in different ways. Some through prayer, helping in the shul kitchen, working on synagogue programming and education or even getting down and dirty in our community garden. All of these approaches can be spiritually satisfying and are valid ways for our members to relate to each other while serving our synagogue and community quietly and Jewishly.

We want all of you to feel comfortable at CBI, to know that you are important, and that you are welcome and valuable members of our congregational family. I invite you to let me and other board members know what interests you and how we can improve our existing programs while using your ideas to develop new ones.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to lead this wonderful congregation where I continue to enjoy the warmth and friendship of so many of you.

NOTES FROM THE CANTOR MENACHEM AV ENIGMA I write this article at the end of June, as the aftermath of recent tragic events in Israel is being felt around the (Jewish) world, over the kidnapping and murder of our sons Yaakov Fraenkel (16), Gilad Shaar (16) and Eyal Yifrach (19), zichronam livracha/of blessed memory.

When you read this article, it will be the Hebrew month of Menachem Av, during the 3 weeks of intense mourning culminating in Tisha B’Av which commemorates the destruction of our two Temples in Jerusalem, the foreign occupation of our country, and our People’s almost 2000 year exile and dispersion. Many also associate Tisha B’Av with the Shoah.

In Judaism our personal lives are intertwined with our national Jewish experience. That’s one reason we break a glass at a Jewish wedding, the memory of the above-mentioned destruction rising to the height of our most joyous celebration.

Thus Jews are keenly aware, as our history has taught us, of the duality of our lives, like the fragility of glass, and how things can change, both for better or worse, in an instant.

When my father and his wife Sonia became first-time parents in Warsaw, Poland in February, 1939 with the birth of their daughter Raisel Shoshana, little could they have known what lay ahead for Polish and European Jewry. Soon they were snapped up in the claws of Hell. Sonia, my sister and hundreds of family members perished in the Warsaw Ghetto or in Maidanek and other such graves.

Yet, after a death experience we are instructed to eat an egg, a somewhat rounded seed, symbolical of the potential for the continuity of life, rebirth, of hope and faith, and the resilience of our spirit. In the Torah the day the spies came back with a negative report of the Promised Land, is understood to be Tisha B’Av. By contrast the Midrash in Eichah Rabbah 1:51 cites the Jerusalem Talmud Berachot 2:4 as a source for Tisha B’Av also being the birthday of the Mashiach/Messiah.

So, not only do we mourn on this day, but we also associate it with the beginning of ge’ulah/redemption. After the Temples were destroyed, after the Inquisition, or the Shoah, we could have disintegrated. Some predicted our demise. Yet each destruction brought resurrection, in the image of the Biblical Ezekiel – the dry bones sprang to life again and the Shoah hastened the rebirth of Israel.

The Prophet Zechariah states (8:19) that our fast days will become for us days of joy, celebration and happy holidays.

He concludes, “ha’emet v’hashalom ehavu/love truth and peace.” In other words those are all interconnected.

May Israel and our People find truth and peace, perhaps a small consolation for the Fraenkel, Shaar and Yifrach families and their fallen sons who are all in our prayers…

RABBINIC INSIGHTS FROM RABBI JASON OUR Jewish Theological Seminary This past May 20th, I marked the 10-year anniversary of my rabbinate. The past decade truly flew by and I have enjoyed these years very much. The opportunity to bring a love of Judaism and Torah to so many people (both in real life and via the Internet) has been a blessing. As I mark this milestone, I find myself reflecting on my six years of study at The Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS).

That part of my life was meaningful and inspirational. Of course I learned a lot about Jewish history, culture and law. However, I also learned a lot about myself during those years.

training new Russian Jewish intelligentsia through Project Judaica, its Jewish studies program in Moscow; and to raising a generation of literate and observant Jews in North America through its intensive work with the Ramah camps and Schechter schools.

JTS is also committed to providing adults with Jewish knowledge and experience through a panoply of innovative programs, helping to create a responsible and informed Conservative Jewish voice on public issues, from religious pluralism in Israel to bioethics. Our multifaceted community is committed to making Judaism come alive for new generations, to bring the richness and vitality of traditional Jewish values into the twenty-first century. JTS articulates a vision of Judaism that is learned and passionate, pluralist and authentic, traditional and egalitarian; one that is thoroughly grounded in Jewish texts, history, and practices, and fully engaged with the societies and cultures of the present. Our vision joins faith with inquiry; the covenant of our ancestors with the creative insights of today; intense involvement in the society and State of Israel with devotion to the flowering of Judaism throughout the world; service to the Jewish community, as well as to all of the communities of which Jews are a part: our society, our country, and our world.

I enjoyed my time at JTS immensely because of the impressive cadre of teachers and students with whom I learned Torah on a daily basis. While I was continuing to prepare myself for the professional rabbinate daily through on-the-job experience, personal study and through continuing education programs like the STAR Foundation’s PEER (Professional Education for Excellence in Rabbis) fellowship and Clal's Rabbis Without Borders fellowship, I gained a substantial foundation at JTS in the rabbinical school and in the Davidson School for Jewish Education.

While a student at the Seminary, I led over 100 tours of the JTS campus for visiting groups and donors. I got to know the Seminary's buildings very well and I also became a bit of a maven on the Seminary's history. How much do you know about the Conservative Movement's premier educational institution?

JTS serves North American Jewry by educating intellectual and spiritual leaders for Conservative Judaism and the vital religious center, training rabbis, cantors, scholars, educators, communal professionals, and lay activists who are inspired by our vision of Torah and dedicated to assisting in its realization.

JTS grants undergraduate, graduate, and professional degrees through its five schools and offers enriching programs for the Jewish community in the United States, Israel, and around the world. For many of us, one of the most important parts of the Services during the High Holy Days is the Yizkor Service on Yom Kippur.

It is at that time when we turn our thoughts to our Loved Ones who have left this earth. We use this meaningful time to reflect upon their lives, as well as the lives of all those who were members of our congregation, family and friends. In addition, we take the time to formally recognize the Martyrs of our people, most especially the Six Million who were murdered during the Holocaust.

As part of this process, we print a more permanent Yizkor Book, which will contain the Yizkor Service, a list of those on the synagogue’s Memorial Plaques, and a memorial to the Six Million. Not only is this book substantial and permanent, but anyone who wishes will be able to take it home with him, for use during the year.

I would urge everyone to take advantage of this opportunity, as a way of remembering those dearest to us, and at the same time, helping the congregation. An order form is printed below.

WE HONOR OUR BAR MITZVAH ‫מזל טוב‬

will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on Saturday, August 9, 2014 – 13 Av, 5774 Jeremy Phillip Davis will be entering 8th grade at Timberstone Jr. High where he is an honor student and a Quiz Bowl team member. He loves sports and he has played ice hockey since he was 3½ years old, as well as baseball for many years. Jeremy is hoping to play hockey for Southview next year. His ultimate goal is to become a professional baseball player for the New York Yankees, playing shortstop like his idol Derek Jeter. Jeremy is involved with Kadima and he looks forward to USY. Jeremy’s mitzvah project began two years ago when he became a volunteer with Gliding Stars, an adaptive skating program which enables people of various ages and physical challenges to learn to skate. He’s looking forward to another season on the ice beginning in September.

Jeremy would like to thank Cantor Lichterman for his endless efforts to help him reach his Bar Mitzvah day at Congregation B’nai Israel.

Jeremy will celebrate this day with many friends and family from near and far and he would like to especially thank his brothers, Adam and Andy, for their endless hours of listening to his practice learning his prayers, his grandparents (Marty and Harriet Davis) for their love and devotion, and his parents (Greg and Hope Davis) for schlepping him to all his activities and for their unconditional love.

SISTERHOOD/SISTERHOOD 2.0 Sisterhood to Start Sisterhood 2.0

CBI Sisterhood Book Club Raisins and Almonds By Kerry Greenwood

The younger generation of CBI ladies is starting a branch of Sisterhood to bring together a strong, vibrant group of women, planning for the future and forming bonds of sisterhood, to make sure there will be a sisterhood in the years to come. It is called SISTERHOOD 2.0.

The first meeting was held Sunday, July 20. Many great ideas for the future of this group were discussed: • Baby baskets for newborns/families of congregants.

• Assistance in various ways for Bar/Bat Mitzvah families starting with Jeremy Davis’ on August 9th.

• Cooking and serving for the congregational Sukkot dinner coming up in October.

• We are in the process of planning an opening event in October based on the interests sent back from the replies of the questionnaire emailed out last month.

Everyone is welcome to participate in these activities.

B'NAI ISRAEL IS ENHANCING ITS ARCHIVES AND NEEDS YOUR HELP As a lead-up to the 150th Anniversary of Congregation B'nai Israel in 2016, a team of dedicated volunteers, led by Cathy Sperling, has been working to locate, identify, and catalog materials into the Synagogue archives. They have found fragments of our history. Work is under way to preserve these important documents of our collective history. Volunteers for this project include: Anne Bauer, Harriet Davis, Alix Greenblatt, Gail Kwait, Roanne Katzman, JoJo Markowicz, Lil Perlman, Ann Rosenberg, Arlene Russell, Sharon Stein, and Sherrie Zaft.

Now, it's your turn to get involved: If you have any materials, such as photographs, newspaper articles, memorabilia including fliers, invitations, printed programs, among other items that pertain to the Synagogue, from any time in its history, and would like Cathy and her team to review them for inclusion in the Archives, please contact Cathy at sperlingcathy@gmail.com.
