Notes from the Cantor Choral Harmony During the past few months, our congregation has enjoyed almost weekly simchas and special occasions celebrated at Shabbat services often accompanied by a sumptuous sponsored Kiddush. May they continue!

In the midst of all these wonderful occasions, I managed to grab a week’s vacation which began with a visit to family in Stamford, CT, where I served as Hazzan for 12 years. By extraordinary coincidence, the annual North American Jewish Choral Festival, now in its 30th year, was taking place in Stamford at the same time. I had always wanted to attend this conference but somehow it never worked out. This time I was not going to miss such a rare opportunity right on my doorstep. As an added bonus my brother and sister in law were in attendance so we spent some time together.

Four to five hundred Jewish women and men from all over the world, from Reform to kippah-bearing came for one purpose only – to sing Jewish music of all genres, both old and new, in choral harmony. Walking the halls and hearing sounds of Hebrew, Yiddish and Ladino, Torah, poetry or Jewish prose emanating from the walls of conference rooms throughout the building was sweet music to my ears, exhilarating and uplifting. A concert we attended featured three choirs; the Jewish People’s Philharmonic Chorus which sings Yiddish repertoire, Kol Ram formed from graduates of the Ramaz School in NY, and Zamir Noded, an outstanding young adult choir which includes our close friends’ son whom we got to see.

The conference is organized by the Zamir Choral Foundation, an umbrella organization for an extensive network of Jewish choral groups. Zamir, founded in 1960, has since 1972 been headed by Matthew Lazar who arguably has done more than any other individual to revive Jewish choral interest amongst young American Jews. Today there are many Zamir affiliated choirs including an international Jewish High School choir. Some alumni have gone on to become cantors and professional singers or music educators. The first Zamir Chorale was founded in 1899 in Lodz, Poland, followed by Warsaw’s Zamir founded in 1903 in which my late father sang under the famous Leo Low. Once popular synagogue-based choirs have declined in the US having become regarded as intrusive to congregational participation.

They have been somewhat replaced by Jewish community choirs and a cappella (unaccompanied) groups such as The Maccabeats, who are returning to Toledo for a concert on September 8th at 2 p.m. at Temple Shomer Emunim.

Choral music is deeply rooted in Judaism going back to the tribe of Levi in the Torah. For example, I Chronicles 15 and 16 describe in detail the elaborate musical procession of orchestras and choirs of Levites including names of participants that accompanied the arrival of the ark to its permanent place in Jerusalem under King David. The destruction of the 2nd Temple in Jerusalem and subsequent almost 2000 year exile led to a decline in Jewish orchestral and choral music. As the familiar refrain of Psalm 137 states, “By the rivers of Babylon we sat and wept when we remembered Zion…How can we sing the song of God on foreign soil?”

Nevertheless, we have always used music to preserve a sense of cultural identity and as a reminder of our national ancient Israeli roots. The development of the Cantorial profession and synagogue choirs were a response to the above, and have helped as a memory trigger to nostalgically connect to the past, to loved ones, and to places long gone. Prayer in Judaism is called “avodah shebalev – the work of the heart” and our liturgical music developed to foster the highest level of “hiddur mitzvah – glorifying this commandment.”

During the Renaissance 500 years ago, the Italian Jewish community achieved an exceptionally high level of music with orchestras and choirs known to exist in Padua and Ferrara, Venice and Modena. This generated much controversy particularly due to the contemporary madrigal style of Salamone Rossi’s compositions never before used in synagogue. Rossi drew influential support from the Rabbi of Venice Leone da Modena (1574-1648), who wrote: “I do not see how anyone…could cast any doubt on the propriety of praising God in song in the synagogue…

No intelligent person, no scholar ever thought of forbidding the use of the greatest possible beauty of voice in praising the Lord…nor the use of musical art which awakens the soul to His glory.” I fondly recall the sweet sounds of our own revived CBI chorale’s harmony echoing from the dome of our sanctuary at the opening Friday night Shabbat service of our 150th anniversary celebration two years ago.

The proliferation of high school and beyond a cappella, glee, show and other choirs in the US during the past decade, as witnessed for example by the TV series Glee and the movies Pitch Perfect 1, 2 and 3 no doubt influenced Jewish musical culture. I am aware of one student from CBI who was swept up by this musical renaissance, our own Noah Hupp, whose wonderful talent was shared as a star member of the world famous Miami (of Ohio) University Men’s Glee Club.

I wonder how many young Jewish Americans realize this choral revival is a return to ancient Jewish Biblical roots. As King Solomon wrote in Kohelet/Ecclesiastes 1:9, " ‫" " מה שהיה הוא שיהיה‬Ma shehaya hu sheyih’ye - Whatever has been is what will be and whatever has been done is what will be done and there is nothing new beneath the sun.”

President's Message Reflections from Israel Hedva and I just returned from Israel having been there for two weeks. The focus for the trip was our daughter Michelle’s marriage to Dror Katz in Caesarea. Caesarea is a magnificent national park in Israel . The city was built on the Mediterranean Coast by King Herod. Restorations of the site created one of Israel’s most attractive and fascinating archeological sites. The backdrop along the sea made for the most magical wedding amidst a breathtaking setting.

A wedding in Israel is unlike most Jewish weddings in America. To be married in Israel according to rabbinic laws, one must go through a vetting process to prove one’s Jewishness which is lengthy and exhaustive. If one is a Kohan, as is our new son in law, the vetting process is even more detailed. Our new son-in-law, Dror, comes from a Sephardic tradition on his mother’s side. For our daughter Michelle, we had to provide two generations of birth certificates, marriage licenses, and affidavits to prove to the rabbinic court that she was Jewish. We also needed at least two rabbis to vouch that she was not only Jewish, but that she had never been married before and was brought up in a “kosher” Jewish household.

Michelle and Dror's wedding took place on a Tuesday, the most common day for a wedding in Israel. This is not by happenstance. For much of our Jewish history, Tuesday, the third day of the week, is considered an especially auspicious day for a wedding. On the third day of creation, the phrase, “…and God saw that it was good” (Bereshit 1:10) appears twice. Therefore, Tuesday is a doubly good day for a wedding.

According to Sephardic tradition, it is customary to celebrate "Shabbat Chatan" (groom’s Shabbat) following the wedding. Due to time constraints, we celebrated this important Shabbat before the wedding. This is a very joyful Shabbat with the groom participating in an "aliyah" (Torah honor) followed by a festive meal after the service.

The evening before the wedding, it is customary for all the women to have a mikvah (ritual bath) party after the "kallah" (bride) returns from the mikvah. There is sumptuous food and often the women partake in Israeli circle dancing. Fortunately, the men were also included at this joyous event.

Weddings in Israel always start with significant amounts of good food, liquor, and wine, usually beginning about one and a half hours before the ceremony. It is an excellent way for camaraderie and socialization to take place. Many people typically arrive early just to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere prior to the marriage ceremony.

In Israel, there are no bridesmaids or groomsmen. The groom is walked down the aisle by both fathers and the bride by both mothers. In a Sephardic wedding, it is not customary for the bride to circle around the groom when she arrives at the "Chuppah" (marriage canopy). Instead, Michelle stopped a few feet before the Chuppah as the mothers moved on and Dror came out to veil her and walk with her back under the canopy. It is also very unusual for the rabbi to recite a speech about the betrothed couple. The rabbi is just there to perform the ceremony with the typical rituals and prayers that are said at all Jewish weddings.

In Sephardic weddings, it is customary for the "kallah" (bride) to buy the "chatan" (groom) his first tallit before the wedding day and to present it to him just before the recitation of the "sheva brachot" (seven blessings). Most Sephardic men do not wear a tallit until they are married. The groom recites the "shehecheyanu" and "lehitatef batsisit" prayers and then the bride and groom drape the tallit around themselves to symbolize that this is their first experience being bound together in a Jewish home. This gift from the bride symbolizes her part in her husband’s cooperation with and deference to God. We were blessed to have had Rabbi Alan Sokobin be part of this wedding where he imparted beautifully stated words to the bride and groom just prior to the breaking of the glass. This was very meaningful in a personal way to us and to the young couple. Some rabbis are very formal, while others are much livelier in the way they conduct the wedding. The Sephardic rabbi performing our wedding chanted the entire service accompanied by lively music including the reading of the "Ketubah" (Jewish marriage contract).

It is customary to be married outdoors in Israel. This tradition mandates that there be stars in the sky at the time of the ceremony. Our marriage ceremony took place ten feet from the Mediterranean Sea and the sun was just going down over the horizon as the wedding party ascended up to the chuppah. It was breathtaking to see the red, pink and orange hues of the setting sun over the horizon and hearing the waves lap up on the shore.

In most cases, drones are not allowed in airspace in most of Israel, however the photography crew was allowed to use a drone for video purposes. Unlike most American weddings where photographers are discrete and unobtrusive during the ceremony, in Israel there is usually a crew of cameramen and a videographer often walking up to the chuppah and just about everywhere else to get the best shot. For first timers at an Israeli wedding the cameramen may seem quite intrusive, yet the wedding books and videos they produce are magnificent. Like everything else in Israel, weddings are much less formal than what we are used to in America.

During the ceremony, even if there are chairs and an aisle,as soon as the bride goes up under the chuppah, many guests race up close to the marriage canopy or just stand up to get a better view of the proceedings. This creates a very casual, festive atmosphere.

Hedva and I were married in Jerusalem 48 years ago. We had an Ashkenazic wedding in the social hall at Hadassah Hospital. We witnessed our son’s wedding in Israel eight years ago, so it was with great pleasure to relive the memories of our weddings in Israel once again.

If you ever have the opportunity to go to a wedding in Israel, make every effort to do so. Be sure to bring an empty stomach and prepare yourself for a very enjoyable and memorable evening. It is an experience that you will never forget.

Yizkor Book 5780 Dear B’nai Israel Congregants,

For many of us, one of the most meaningful parts of our Services during the High Holy Days is Yizkor on Yom Kippur. It is at that time when we turn our thoughts to our loved ones who have left this earth. We reflect upon their lives, as well as the lives of members of our congregation, and family and friends. In addition, we take the time to formally recognize the Martyrs of our people, especially the Six Million who were murdered during the Shoah, and those who gave their lives for Israel.

As part of this process we print a Yizkor Book which will contain the Yizkor Service, a list of the synagogue’s Memorial Plaques, and a memorial to the Six Million and Israeli victims. Those who wish may take this book home for use during the year may do so.

I urge you to take advantage of this opportunity as a way of remembering those dearest to us. An order form is printed below.

The response last year was wonderful! I hope that you will participate this year. I look forward to greeting everyone during the High Holy Days.
