Notes from the Cantor ……………………………………….

‘Shehecheyanu’ As I write this article in mid-July, we are reading the Torah portion Balak, from Numbers chapters 22 – 25. Parshat Balak contains one of the most famous statements of Torah, oft quoted in our liturgy, the words of the non-Jewish prophet Bilaam: “Ma tovu oha-lecha Yaakov mish-k’no-techa Yisrael – How wonderful are your tents O Jacob, your sanctuaries O Israel.”

Coincidentally this coming Shabbat July 23rd ushers in an intense 3-week period of mourning in our Jewish calendar. It begins with the 17th of Tammuz and culminates in Tisha B’av/the 9th of Av, one of the most tragic days in Jewish history. On the 17th of Tammuz the walls of Jerusalem were breached, fatefully ending on Tisha B’av with the destruction not once, but twice, of both Temples, Jerusalem and Israel. What followed the second destruction in the year 70 AD, was 1900 years of diaspora wanderings, till 1948 with the re-establishment of Israel as an independent Jewish state.

Yet despite the destruction and an almost 2000-year exile, our People ingeniously reinvented Judaism, eventually establishing flourishing post-Temple - Jewish societies throughout the world - from Babylonia to Rome, Spain to Poland, Russia to the USA, and throughout the entire world.

One such community was established exactly 150 years ago, by Rosh Hashana 1866, right here in Toledo, Ohio, which became known as our own Congregation B’nai Israel. It pioneered Judaism in northwest Ohio. Well are we aware of the many committees and over 100 volunteers who have joined with Cathy, Fagie and Sharon in collaboratively and feverishly planning behind the scenes for a year’s long celebration of this great milestone for our shul and community. And what a celebration it will be, starting on Friday evening September 16th and all weekend long! We hope you will all join with us!

Our congregation is steadfast and dynamic, and enjoyed a year of record new membership, with varied and well attended programming, adult education, daily minyanim and services amongst many other activities. We remain at the forefront of developing and promoting Yiddishkeit in our community.

The 3 week period of mourning that culminates in Tisha B’av has a dual nature For example, after a death experience we eat a rounded seed like an egg as a symbol of the potential for rebirth and continuity. In the Torah, the day the spies came back from the Promised Land with a negative report, is understood to be Tisha B’av. Yet, the Midrash in Eichah Rabba claims that Tisha B’av will be the birthday of the Mashiach/Messiah.

So from destruction and mourning comes the potential for rebirth and geulah/redemption. Our redemption may be seen in our being the beneficiaries of our predecessor visionaries, whose devotion, service and sacrifice over the past century and a half, brought us to this day. Let us ever be grateful for the blessings of our great Congregation, B’nai Israel, and pray that Hashem will continue to crown our noble efforts with success, as we say - Baruch…shehe-che-yanu v’kiy’manu v’higiy-anu la-ze’man hazeh! – Thank you God…Who has kept us in life to be present for this day, so that we can acclaim, out loud and together: - How wonderful are…your sanctuaries O Israel!

70 C.E. was a cataclysmic year for Jewish life and the Jewish vision of law by which to live. For the thousand years since the Temple was built in Jerusalem by Solomon, the Kohanim, the priestly class essentially ruled the Jewish people. The ritual minutia of the sacrificial system, so carefully categorized in the third book of the Torah, was the essential focus of the priestly caste.

Toward the end of that thousand years the nature of the community changed; when once there was essentially an agricultural population. A new, still small but growing, portion of Jewish society was urban with a need for a new view of communal and economic legislation. There was now a need to emphasize the non-ritual elements of Torah law. The rabbis began to accentuate the necessity for a greater emphasis on the relationship between inflexible Torah law and the new social reality. The primary legal scholar of that generation, Hillel, instituted a innovative and adjusting principle called the Prosbul in order or modify the strict restricting economic requirements of the Jubilee year; he arbitrarily altered what had been considered uncompromising Torah legislation.

Following the destruction of the Temples in 70 C.E. the rabbinic group grasped at communal leadership and began to organize legislation compatible with the new social and economic realities. New legislation was created and was compiled into a series of well categorized legal systems included in the six volumes of the Mishnah. The important civil area of torts and damages are in Bava Mitzia, The Middle Gate.

MISHNA I.: Two persons, who hold a tallit, and each of them claims that he has found it, or that the whole belongs to him, (in such a case) each of them shall take an oath that no less than a half belongs to him, and then its value shall be divided. If, however, one claims the whole and the other half of it, then the oath for the first must be for no less than three quarters, and for the second no less than a quarter, and it is to be divided accordingly.

Basic to the simplistic legal situation is that the statements of both petitioners are accepted as true. Unimportant to the case is the basis for the adversarial claims. Did the two view the tallit simultaneously and both grasp a side simultaneously? Did one reach for the object as the other fell upon it? Did both claim it verbally instantaneously? The issues are of no matter to the fundamental legal principle that the case establishes.

Jewish law and Anglo-American common law differ in a basic view of the function of law. Our western understanding and acceptance of law is that it regulates behavior and punishes an infraction; it deals with conflicts by emphasizing the adverbial patterns. Cases are party of the first part versus party of the second part. The antagonistic word versus assumes that in process of establishing the mutual sharp legal assault and relevant responses of the adversaries in a case requiring a one sided result, the ensuing decision will be just. In our tallit case, would an adversarial trial in which one of the protagonists received the entire garment result in justice?

Jewish law, Halacha, has a very different world view. Clearly, basic to Halacha, unfortunately and sadly not in all other systems of laws, is the ethical stretch toward integrity and fairness for every individual. “Justice, justice shall you pursue.”

In principle, Halacha derives from God because it is the constant process of developing rules and regulations that are based upon ideals and standards enunciated in Torah. Functionally, it is what the word Halacha actually means. The on line source My Jewish Learning defines it as “The root of the Hebrew term used to refer to Jewish law, halakhah, means “go” or “walk.” Halakhah, then, is the “way” a Jew is directed to behave in every aspect of life, encompassing civil, criminal, and religious law.”

It is the legal and ethical path upon which Jews should walk in their journey through their years. It is not a litany of prohibitions; it is not a series of legal mechanisms to give methodology to adversarial relationships; it is a way for human beings to best transverse the daily events in a lifetime with a limited number of chasms to leap or enemies to fight.

Adam Howard Davis will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on Saturday, August 6, 2016. Adam is the son of Hope and Greg Davis and the brother of Jeremy and Andy Davis. He is the grandson of Harriet and Marty Davis of Sylvania and Gloria and the late David Fettman of Canton, Ohio.

Adam is a seventh-grade honor student at Timberstone Jr. High where he enjoys playing clarinet in the school band. Adam is an avid fisherman with his grandpa in the summertime and together they volunteer at the Diabetes Youth Services camp introducing kids how to fish. He loves designing his own homes and one of his future dreams is to be an architect.

Adam would like to thank Cantor Lichterman for all of his encouragement, training and guidance.

He would also like to thank Fagie Benstein for helping him understand the meaning of his Torah and haftorah portions. Thank you, also, to Howard Rosenbaum for allowing him to participate in minyan services.

Youth & Education News…………………………………….

THE DAVID S. STONE RELIGIOUS SCHOOL OF CONGREGATION B’NAI ISRAEL WELCOMES STUDENTS FROM ETZ CHAYIM Beginning on the first day of class, Aug. 28, 2016, students previously attending religious school at Etz Chayim will be joining us as students in the David S. Stone School. We will be welcoming eleven new students.

Kim Brody will remain as principal of the school. She will continue to have responsibility for overseeing curricular development and administration. Instruction will continue to be at our synagogue building. As in past years, occasional programs may be scheduled at other sites, including at Etz Chayim.

The curriculum will remain the same, with some changes, as there always are every year. The teaching staff and clergy of both congregations have had, and will continue to have opportunities to provide guidance into curricular development, teaching, and other aspects of the school. Our children will be taught by our trusted and experienced teachers and staff, plus staff from Etz Chayim. Our new staff and Kim Brody already know each other, and have a good working relationship.

Etz Chayim will be transferring funds to our school that will cover all the costs for the additional students, staff and supplies. There will be no additional costs to our congregation.

The leadership of both congregations are currently developing a plan to ensure ease of communication between congregations, and provide a venue for exchange of ideas and for planning, with input from our principal, and from clergy and others from both congregations.

We look forward to an another exciting, vibrant year. Please join the board in supporting Kim Brody and her staff, and in welcoming our new students and staff as partners in the David S. Stone School.

We look forward to another great school year at the David S. Stone Religious School, and are excited to welcome our eleven friends from Congregation Etz Chayim.

August 28 is our first day of class and the welcome breakfast. Please mar k your calendar and plan on attending as we would like to extend a warm welcome to our new students and to Megan Van Dyke and Rabbi Rubin, both great additions to our teaching staff. Minyan will be from 9:30-10:00 and breakfast 10:00-10:30 followed by class.

Megan Van Dyke will be teaching the parent/ child class for ages three and under, as well as teaching art. Rabbi Rubin will teach portions of the B’nai Mitzvah class, as well as portions of the 8 th grade class. Sharon Lapitsky will teach a two month unit to our 8th graders as well. Our 8th and 10th graders are fortunate that Rabbi Sokobin will be teaching some classes.

We are thrilled to offer our Parent /Tot program again this year. There will be an exciting curriculum focused on holidays, Hebrew and Judaics. There is no charge and open to children ages 3 and under accompanied with a parent. See calendar for details and contact KBrody@cbitoledo.org if you are interested and able to attend.

Many joint projects will take place throughout the school year with our friends from Shomer Emunim as well. Some programs including , helping at the food bank, community agency day, baking hamenstaschen and bringing to residents of Kingston and more. A very special joint program with all Toledo Religious Schools is planned for October 9 for grades 6-10. They will have a program with a lone soldier coming in from the Cleveland area who will share information about the Lone Soldier program. A joint taschlich program will also take place from 9:30-10:00a.m.prior to the Lone Soldier program.

Hasbara Fellowship trip to Israel…………………………...

This June, I had the immense honor of spending sixteen days in Israel as a fellow with Hasbara Fellowships, a leading pro-Israel organization working with over 80 universities across North America. This was my third trip to Israel since 2013, beginning with my confirmation class trip from B’nai Israel. I want to thank B’nai Israel and the Kripke Israel Fund for providing me with the opportunity to visit Israel alongside my classmates as this trip provided my initial love for the State of Israel and my inspiration for advocacy. Without Israel, I did not believe that Judaism had a meaning in my life.

Each time I travel to Israel I have totally different experiences and gain new perspectives. In addition to visiting the traditional tourist sites (the Western Wall, the Old City of Jerusalem etc.), we visited places that are uncommon for similar Israel programs for individuals my age. In addition to visiting the major cities of Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Haifa, I had the pleasure of visiting Rambam Hospital in Bat Galim, a leader in healthcare innovation that has treated nearly 1,000 Syrian refugees. I also visited Save A Child’s Heart (SACH) in Holon, which has provided treatment for over 4,000 children in developing countries with congenital heart disease, bringing the children and their family members to Israel free of charge. SACH is also training teams of doctors from developing countries in cardiothoracic surgery in order to serve the needs of their citizens. I really enjoyed the opportunity to spend time with some of the kids who are receiving treatment from SACH. I had the honor of meeting Oren Hazzan, the youngest member of the Likud Party in the Knesset, Gil Hoffman and Khaled Abu Toameh, both renowned journalists for The Jerusalem Post and hearing their own perspective of the political situation in Israel. I was privileged to meet members of Israel’s minority groups, including members of the Bedouin community, having dinner in the Druze village of Peki’in, as well as a meal in the Arab-Israeli town of Abu Gosh.

During the second to last day of the trip, we had the unique opportunity to visit Rawabi, the first planned Palestinian city in the West Bank, a high-tech city and a project of the Palestinian billionaire and real estate mogul Bashar Masri. Rawabi is a beautiful new city providing low-cost housing, high-tech industry, and a 12,000 seat outdoor amphitheater made entirely of stone, and a potential for stimulating economic growth in the region. Our group had a nearly forty minute Q&A with Masri, and although I was skeptical of some of his impressions of the conflict, I love the idea of his project and the importance of promoting industry and economic well-being for the Palestinian people in an effort to end extremism and normalize relations with Israelis.

As one might consider, this was no ordinary Israel trip for Jewish college students. I was able to catch up with old friends, meet a new set of friends who inspire me everyday, and meet people who come from so many different places within Israeli society. This trip has affirmed my Zionist principles, my support for the Jewish people to live freely in a state of their own, as well as an appreciation for the modern democratic values of Israel, and the protection of freedom and the promotion of peace, happiness, and prosperity Israel holds for all of its citizens, not only its Jewish ones.

Miriam’s Meatloaf (Each loaf should yield about ten slices) Ingredients: 2 slices of wheat bread 2 1/2 tablespoons of soy milk (unsweetened) 1/2 cup ketchup 1 pound of ground meat 1 pound of ground turkey Small onion, chopped 1/3 cup fresh parsley, chopped 1 tablespoon of Dijon mustard 1/2 tsp salt 1/4 tsp pepper 1 tsp paprika 1 large garlic clove, crushed 1 large egg

by Miriam Beckerman Some congregants have been asking for my recipes, so I am happy to include your favorites in the upcoming bulletins.

Directions: 1. Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees 2. Place bread in food processor and pulse until it is coarse crumbs 3. Place crumbs in bowl and add soy milk. Let stand 5 minutes.

4. Combine that with 2 tablespoons of ketchup and all remaining ingredients. Mix well. Spread the remaining ketchup on top.

5. Bake 1 hour uncovered. Let it rest for 10 minutes before cutting.

Cook’s note: I mix the ketchup with chili sauce, and I also sauté some mushrooms, carrots, celery and add to the mix.

Daily Minyan Our daily minyan is an important part of Congregation B’nai Israel. It is especially important when a congregant is saying Kaddish or is observing a Yahrzeit. Please make every effort to attend.

Our daily morning minyanim (MondayFriday) are at 7:00 a.m. We invite you to join us after services for breakfast with the group at Panera.

Sundays at 9:30 a.m. during the Religious School year.

Our daily evening minyanim are at 5:45 p.m. Friday at 6:00 p.m.

USY AND KADIMA END OF SUMMER EVENT Sunday, August 21st at 11:30 am – 3:30 pm Maumee Bay State Park 1400 State Park Rd., Oregon, OH 43616 COME HAVE FUN IN THE SUN! BITUSY has rented a Sun Shelter for the day! The kids can go swimming at two sand beaches – one on

Lake Erie shore and one along the park’s inland lake.

Changing booths are provided. There are hiking trails, basketball and volleyball courts and a butterfly gazebo!

We will have a cook out along with other snacks throughout the day. There is a concession area if your child wants to bring money to buy snacks.

Transportation will be coordinated at a later date based on number of RSVP’s
