Jordan Slutsky will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on Saturday, August 22, 2015.

Jordan is the daughter of Ruslan and Mindy Slutsky and the older sister of Jacob. Her proud grandparents are Maxine and Warren Berman of Mayfield Village, Ohio and Nina and Aron Slutsky of Columbus, Ohio.

Jordan is going into the 7th grade at McCord Junior High. Jordan is an avid swimmer and is currently enjoying her 7th season on the JCC swim team. She is hoping to swim for Northview in a couple years when she enters high school. Aside from swimming, in her free time Jordan enjoys watching movies and TV, she loves hanging out with her friends, shopping at the mall and traveling with her family. Jordan also loves to read about different presidents, especially Abraham Lincoln.

For her Bat Mitzvah project, Jordan decided to donate toys to a local children’s hospital. When she was in kindergarten, Jordan had to spend a couple

of days in the hospital. She says she will always remember all of the toys and crafts they had available.

They also came around with a wagon and she was able to pick toys as gifts to take home. Because of this memory, she wanted to give back and donate toys for other sick kids.

Jordan is looking forward to spending her special day with family and friends and would like to thank Cantor Lichterman and Fagie Benstein for all of their help in preparing her for her Bat Mitzvah.

Notes from the Cantor WHERE DID YOU COME FROM AND WHERE ARE YOU GOING This article is based on my drash/sermon on parashot Matot & Mas’ei delivered on Shabbat July 18th 2015. This was during the 9 days of mourning leading to Tisha B’av, right after the announcement by the US & its negotiating partners of a nuclear deal with Iran.

The news of the nuclear deal with Iran is dominating the media and our conversations these days, with lots of pros and cons as we have heard from Obama, Netanyahu, and so many others.

Whether we think the deal is good or bad (and only time will tell), the dual Torah portions we read on Shabbat th July 18 – Matot and Mas’ei which conclude the book of Numbers/Bamidbar, contain valuable insight concerning this news that has Jews around the world and particularly Israel, deeply concerned. Congregants who were present at the service on July 18th have asked me to publish and share my comments.

Our Torah portion in Numbers 33:2 rather strangely states that Moses recorded all the starting points of our People’s travels in their 40 years in the desert, a total of 42 encampments. Each stop is recorded twice. Furthermore, we chant these sentences not with the regular Torah trop melody; rather we use the special exalted melody used for Exodus 15 - The Song of the Crossing of the Sea. From this, the following questions arise – a) Why this special exalted melody? b) Why is each place of embarkation mentioned? c) Why is each place mentioned twice?

Our sages explain that our ancestors’ desert travels were not aimless; rather they were part of a Divine plan with clear, purposeful direction from the Exodus to the Promised Land. What kept our ancestors going all those 40 years in the desert, was the ultimate goal of reaching Israel, a goal that they set in front of them at all times. Simultaneously they remembered their humble origin as oppressed slaves, and slowly but steadily they progressed, hurdle after hurdle, towards their goal.

During the 9 days of mourning culminating in Tish’a B’av (July 25-26) we are deeply cognizant of the destruction of the two Temples, Jerusalem and Israel, and our 2 exiles, the second of which lasted almost 1900 years through ceaseless wanderings and expulsions, to 1948.

But throughout these exiles, at least 3 times each day, we yearned for our return to Zion, in prayer after prayer such as “Return to Jerusalem O God in mercy…” and “May our eyes behold Your merciful return to Zion…” etc. Similarly, we break a glass at the height of our joy, our wedding day, to remember the two destructions, as stated in Psalms 137: 6.

In Pirkay Avot/Ethics of Our Fathers 3:1, Rabbi Akavya Ben Mahalalel states: “…know where you came from and where you are going…” When the great Israeli poet S.Y. Agnon received the Nobel Prize in 1966, in his speech at the official banquet in Stockholm, Sweden he stated, “…I was born in one of the cities of the Exile. But I always regarded myself as being born in Jerusalem.”

So, in Rabbi Akavya’s words, do we know where we come from and where we are going? We all stood at Sinai; we all received the Torah. We, like Agnon, were born in Jerusalem; we come from Israel.

So, whatever we feel about the nuclear deal with Iran, and whatever our feelings about Israel’s government or that of the USA and their respective policies and politics - whether we agree or disagree, which we are fortunately and democratically entitled to do – we, as Jews, should unite in support of Israel, Jerusalem and our People. As the Psalmist stated in 122:3, “Jerusalem is (will be?) as a city united unto herself.”

One way to stand by Israel and express your support, is to visit as often as possible. I am planning a congregational trip for the end of October 2016. This trip is organized by our own most experienced Hedva Romanoff.

Rabbinic Insights from Rabbi Jason

Eleven years ago, I graduated from rabbinical school at the Jewish Theological Seminary. The majority of my classmates wore rainbow buttons on our suits in protest of the Seminary’s policy of not admitting gays and lesbians to the institution. In my sixth and final year at the Seminary, I served as the president of the Rabbinical School Student Organization (RSSO) and my final task in that position was to agree to allocate a large sum of our unspent annual budget to Keshet, an organization working to overturn the Seminary’s policy on admission of gays and lesbians to the rabbinical and cantorial schools.

Much has changed since my student years at the Seminary, since soon after my ordination, the institution opened its doors and gay marriage has become much more accepted nationwide. In a public letter in December 2006, Chancellor Arnold Eisen

I write to announce that, effective immediately, The Jewish Theological Seminary will accept qualified gay and lesbian students to our rabbinical and cantorial schools.

This matter has aroused thoughtful introspection about the nature and future of both JTS and the Conservative Movement to a degree not seen in our community since the decision to admit women to The Rabbinical School nearly twenty-five years ago. Convictions and feelings are strong on both sides. Some will cheer this decision as justice long overdue. Others will condemn it as a departure from Jewish law and age-old Jewish custom. One thing is abundantly clear: after years of discussion and debate, heartfelt and thoughtful division on the matter is evident among JTS faculty, students, and administration. The same is true of professionals and lay leaders of the Conservative Movement. For many of us, the issue runs deep inside ourselves.

Those of us who undertook the ordination discussion at JTS acted not as poskim, or legal adjudicators — that responsibility fell to the Committee on Jewish Law and Standards of the Rabbinical Assembly (CJLS) — but as educators charged with setting standards for our unique academic institution.

That was a momentous decision for the Conservative Movement. That decision paved the path for Conservative rabbis to begin officiating at same-sex commitment ceremonies. While I am willing to perform such ceremonies, I have yet to be asked. In a Supreme Court decision in June, the highest court in the land legalized same-sex marriage nationwide with its historic 5-4 vote. This vote meant that same-sex marriage would now be legal in all 50 states. Some religious leaders, like myself, praised the decision for its inclusion and equality. Other religious leaders, including many Orthodox rabbis, however, argued that it violates the laws of the Torah and that it will harm society.

Personally, I believe that marriage is a sacred covenant relationship between two people -- and it doesn’t matter if they are of the same sex. Gays and lesbians have already demonstrated that they have the same marital commitment as heterosexual couples. I applaud the Court’s landmark decision and am relieved that states, like Michigan where I live, will no longer be able to uphold its ban on gay marriage. I am proud to be a LGBT advocate and ally (I am a board member of the Jewish Gay Network), and I celebrated this historic moment with my friends in the gay community.

It’s remarkable how quickly the discourse has shifted, but I’m thrilled that it has. I’m glad that the Conservative Movement today has become inclusive of the LGBT community, even if it wasn’t while I was growing up and studying at the Jewish Theological Seminary. Our congregation is the spiritual home to gays and lesbians, and I’m proud that we support love and equality of all. Thanks to the Supreme Court’s decision, my children won’t remember a time when gays and lesbians couldn’t marry in our country. And that’s important.

GET INVOLVED IN THE HIGH HOLY DAYS WOULD YOU LIKE AN HONOR?

This year’s Community Garden has been full of change, surprises, and vegetables. The hard work building and installing raised beds and filling them with topsoil and compost allowed for harvests of zucchini and spinach in June, much earlier than before! The raised beds made planting, weeding, and harvesting much easier. Tomatoes have done much better in the new soil also, so if it ever stops raining, they will produce a good crop to bring to the Food Bank at Jewish Family Services (where all our produce goes to feed those in need). This week, we began harvesting beans, more zucchini and squash, and thinned carrots and beets. We have also added annual and native perennial flowers to attract pollinators that will help make fruits, and insect predators to control plant pests. Many thanks to all who volunteered their time thus far: Leon Williams, Sue Wilson, Alice Applebaum, Marty Kaback, and Alan Mintz. Stop by and enjoy the flowers and developing veggies, and, as always, we would love more helpers!

Cantor Lichterman didn’t know he had a strong connection to Toledo years before he moved here! In the 60’s and 70’s the Sol Norflus family belonged to B’nai Israel.

Sol Norflus’s father and Ivor’s grandmother, Bayla Norflus, were siblings. Ellie Norflus, Sol’s daughter was raised at B’nai Israel and has lived in India for many years. She called her Aunt in New York and mentioned she was coming to the United States and was going to Toledo to visit her mother’s grave. Her aunt told her that her second cousin, Ivor, was the Cantor at B’nai Israel! What a small world as cousins from South Africa and India meet for the first time in Toledo at B’nai Israel.

The neighborhood - in the throes of Cold War paranoia seizes the opportunity to further ostracize Ava and her son.

Years later, when Lewis and Rose reunite to untangle the final pieces of the tragic puzzle, they must decide: Should you tell the truth even if it hurts those you love, or should some secrets remain buried?

Youth & Education News David S. Stone Religious School

I hope everyone is having a safe and enjoyable summer!

We are getting geared up for an amazing school year at David S. Stone Religious School. Two of our dedicated teachers spent the beginning of their summer with our friends in the Western Galilee. Paulette Sherline and Peter Silverman, along with two others from the Toledo Jewish community, spent a week participating in the Educator’s Seminar with our chaverim in the Partnership to continue to build the bridge bringing our communities closer together. Paulette and Peter came back with a plethora of ideas to continue and build more relationships with our students and students in Israel.

We will also be preparing a visit to the Western Galilee while on the Confirmation trip of 2016. Our students will be visiting Israel from June 6-16, 2016 as the culmination of their Religious School experience. Thanks to the Kripke Family Israel Fund at the Toledo Jewish Community Foundation for making a fourth trip possible. Students will have an in depth trip of a lifetime to Israel. Many past students stated that it was the best experience of their life!

Dr. Blair Grubb was honored for his medical efforts and well-known bedside manner when Dysautonomia International presented him with the 2015 Physician of the Year Award at its annual conference July 17-20 in Washington, D.C. Dan Barbee, vice president of clinical services at UTMC, said Grubb is a testament to UTMC’s approach to putting the patient first. His waiting list is indicative of how much his expertise and compassion is valued. Patients come from Canada, Australia, Saudi Arabia, Israel and Great Britain.

“He’s regarded, literally, as the global leader in his field, and patients came from all around the world to see him here at UTMC,” he said. “We are proud that Grubb is one of our own.”

Congregation B’nai Israel is proud of our members who were honored by the Jewish Federation of Greater Toledo at the 2014-2015 Annual Meeting.

Once the Temple was destroyed, the rabbis decreed that all Jews should wave the lulav and etrog all seven days as a remembrance of Temple days.

ORAL HISTORIES

Oral Histories have begun. The committee is interviewing as many members of the congregation as possible. Interviews are videotaped and transcribed. Everyone who is interviewed will review and approve the final transcript before it is printed and archived.

Excerpts of interviews may be incorporated into the 150th celebration. The interviews will Honor | Celebrate | Inspire become a permanent record of the history of Congregation B’nai Israel. If you would like to share your history for our B’nai Israel archives, please call the office.

The Yizkor Book Dear B’nai Israel Congregants,

For many of us, one of the most important parts of the Services during the High Holy Days is the Yizkor Service on Yom Kippur. It is at that time when we turn our thoughts to our Loved Ones who have left this earth. We use this meaningful time to reflect upon their lives, as well as the lives of all those who were members of our congregation, family and friends. In addition, we take the time to formally recognize the Martyrs of our people, most especially the Six Million who were murdered during the Holocaust.

As part of this process, we print a more permanent Yizkor Book, which will contain the Yizkor Service, a list of those on the synagogue’s Memorial Plaques, and a memorial to the Six Million. Not only is this book substantial and permanent, but anyone who wishes will be able to take it home with him, for use during the year.

I would urge everyone to take advantage of this opportunity, as a way of remembering those dearest to us, and at the same time, helping the congregation. An order form is printed below.

The response last year was wonderful! I hope that you will join us this year. I look forward to greeting everyone during the High Holy Days.

If you wish to maintain your entry from last year, you need do nothing. The synagogue will bill you.

THURSDAY, AUGUST 20 A Day at the Bay ...

PUT-IN-BAY

8:30 a.m. depart Federation campus, 6465 Sylvania Ave. (return approx. 7 p.m.) $60 per person (includes bus transportation, ferry transportation, guided train tour, all stops and lunch) We will travel in style to Port Clinton, where we will catch the Jet Express and enjoy the 20 minute ferry ride over to the island where our covered train will be waiting for us.

We will tour the sights of the Butterfly House, Antique Car Museum, Put-in-Bay Winery, Doller Museum of Island Life and Perry’s Monument Visitor Center. Lunch will be at Tipper’s Buffet with time to shop the shops! This trip is different than last time! Dress in comfy shoes and bring a hat!

We will depart on the 10:15 a.m. ferry and return on the 5 p.m. ferry. This trip has minimal walking, as we will spend most of our time on the train.

THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 3 The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center and Schedel Arboretum

8 a.m. depart from Jewish Federation Campus, 6465 Sylvania Avenue 5 p.m. return to Federation campus $60 per person (includes transportation, admission tickets, tours, lunch and bus snacks) Join us as we visit a historic area close to home followed by a lovely garden afternoon.

We will start off the day by traveling to Fremont, Ohio to visit The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center. Then we are off to the Schedel Arboretum.

There we will have a beautiful lunch on the deck overlooking the gardens. Following lunch, we will tour the gardens with a docent. This trip has moderate walking/standing and could include a few flights of stairs and/or uneven terrain.

Educators’ Israel Trip Two of our dedicated teachers spent the beginning of their summer with our friends in the Western Galilee. Paulette Sherline and Peter Silverman, along with two others from the Toledo Jewish community, spent a week participating in the Educator’s Seminar with our chaverim in the Partnership to continue to build the bridge bringing our communities closer together.
