Notes from the Cantor A Trip Into History Recently Rabbi Alan Sokobin mentioned to me that he had books in his library that he wished to donate to his alma mater, the Rabbinical School of Hebrew Union College (HUC-JIR) in Cincinnati, and asked if I would be interested in taking a trip there with him.

He offered to try to arrange a private visit to HUC’S world famous Klau Library rare book and manuscript collection. To further entice me, our ever astute Rabbi, keenly aware of my passion for synagogue architecture and history, suggested we include a visit to the magnificent Plum Street Temple in downtown Cincinnati. Alan had not been back to his alma mater nor to the landmark Temple in perhaps half a century and I had never been to Cincinnati. Alan’s incentives worked!

We consulted the ever knowledgeable David Weinberg for helpful hints about the trip, and he expressed interest in joining us. For me, the allure of Alan and David as a captive audience in the car for so many hours was palpable. After much coordination and having cleared my crowded calendar, finally this past May we set out for a long twelve-hour day-trip’s adventure into Ohio and American Jewish history.

We listened intently as Alan regaled us with anecdotes from his 60-year storied career, while also sharing poignant memories of dear Mickey. I brought inspirational music to help pass the time in the car, but the conversation flowed so freely that we never turned on the music despite being in the car for seven hours. I cherished this rare opportunity to listen, learn, share and gain insight from two of our community’s luminaries.

Entering the Isaac M. Wise Temple inspires awe (photos on page 3). It is one of the most beautiful synagogues in the world. I speak from personal experience having visited or chanted services in some of the world’s grandest synagogues, including Florence, Rome, Budapest, St. Petersburg in Russia, and New York’s Temple Emanu-El. Plum Street is on a par with them all. Dating from 1865, the ‘Mother Synagogue’ of Reform Judaism is still used by HUC for Rabbinic ordination (Alan pointed out that his ordination regretfully was held elsewhere) and special events, although there is a modern suburban campus for daily use. I could have meditated there for hours, contemplating its Byzantine-Moorish majesty, but we had an ambitious program and soon we were off to our next destination.

The staff at HUC eagerly welcomed their ‘trio of illustrious visitors’ that included one of their graduates of some 60 years ago and a professor of Judaic studies. They assured Alan that his books, which included amongst other collectibles the complete S.Y. Agnon works in Hebrew, would be put to good use. We were led upstairs to the secluded repository of some of the world’s greatest Judaica books and manuscripts, where we were treated by Dr Jordan Finkin to an exclusive showcase of some of the Klau Library’s rarest treasures.

Much to our surprise and delight we were allowed, even encouraged to not only touch but page through these rarest of hand written or early printed books. No gloves were required! We perused 1000 years of our history with our bare hands, Dr. Jinkin explaining that the notion that one should wear gloves is false, as gloves can do more harm than the bare skin of our fingers. Their philosophy is for these to be experienced as if through the eyes and hands of the writers and publishers. Several were in magnificent calligraphy and illumination, predating the printing press. I eagerly anticipated the challenge and mystery of attempting to decipher what their idiosyncratic writing or ancient print might expose.

Included were – • Chumash/Bible hand-written 1000 years ago likely in Persia • Manuscripts from the Kaifeng Jewish Community of China in Chinese-influenced Hebrew script and vowels; some with community membership lists of the dating back 600 years • Hand written mohel handbook from Veneto, Italy containing prayers and babies’ and families’ Hebrew names from approx. 350 years ago, some dates recorded in the French Revolutionary calendar • The first ever complete printed Talmud, published in Venice by the famous non-Jewish publisher Daniel Bomberg in 1520-23.

Ever since Exodus 25:8, “They shall make for Me a sanctuary and I shall dwell amongst them,” and Deuteronomy 31:19, “...now write for yourselves this song (Torah) and teach it to the People of Israel, place it in their mouths...,” the synagogue and books have been central to Judaism’s survival. Talmudical sages listed in the Mishna (Avot 5:6) ten miraculous creations on the eve of the first Sabbath of creation, among them “k’tav” and “mechtav” – writing and instruments for writing. No surprise then that we have been called “Am Hasefer – the People of the Book.”

I believe I speak for all three of us when I say it was a trip none of us will ever forget! As we approach the High Holidays, this inspiring yet humbling experience will enhance our perspective of our ancient, glorious tradition and culture.

President's Message A Time for Introspection It is so hard to believe that the High Holidays will soon be here. It is really true that the older we get, the faster time seems to fly. The period between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur is one of introspection and time for us to reflect on how we can change to become better, not just with ourselves, but also how we interact with others and how we interact with God. One aspect of interaction is our synagogue. As you can probably conjecture, we are an aging congregation.

Our median age is 70 years old. We at Congregation B'nai Israel (CBI) are not unique. Both of the other congregations in Toledo also have about the same aging demographic. In spite of this, we have younger members and children of both pre-Sunday school age and those already in Sunday school school.

There are several words that describe what a synagogue is in the Hebrew language. Bet ha-tefila is a house of prayer. Bet ha-knesset is a house of assembly. Bet ha-midrash is a house of study. I believe that our synagogue is synonymous with all three.

I would urge not only our younger congregants, but all members of the congregation, before the High Holidays, to ask the question, as part of our self-introspection, “What can I do to make CBI more vibrant and how can I make a difference in my participation at the synagogue?” The synagogue has much to offer all of us both spiritually and in programming. This upcoming year, besides our Adult Education series of lectures, we are starting a new committee to look into programming for the younger generation. I really hope that you will consider attending some of our programs. You will be enriched by the experience and your family will benefit from what you learn. Of course it goes without saying that being present at Shabbat services, even if it is once in a while, is fundamentally one change that we can all benefit by. I, personally, have gained spiritual sustenance through my participation. After all, it is people that make the congregation vibrant and alive.

One of the most poignant programs coming up this October is “Our Ethical and Moral Legacies”. This program is dedicated to the memory of the late Honorable Judge David Katz z”l and Joan Katz z”l z”l.. CBI will be bringing in a highly respected rabbi from Arizona who is expert in writing ethical wills. We all eventually write a will that deals with inheritance, however too few of us really have meaningful discussions with our children and grandchildren about what ethical and moral values we would like to impart on them. In our liturgy we always mention “from generation to generation- l’dor v’dor” and this program will emphasize exactly that. All of us should consider writing an ethical will. You will benefit from it by having the satisfaction of doing so and knowing that future generations, which matter most to you, will also reap rewards from from this program. In the words of Mortimer Jerome Adler, “The purpose of learning is growth, and our minds, unlike our bodies, can continue growing as long as we live”. Let’s all grow together in mind and spirit.

BAR MITZVAH Jacob Slutsky will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on Saturday, August 11, 2018 at Congregation B’nai Israel.

Jacob is the son of Ruslan and Mindy Slutsky and the younger brother of Jordan. His proud grandparents are Maxine and Warren Berman of Mayfield Village, Ohio and Aron and Nina Slutsky of Columbus, Ohio.

Jacob is going into 8th grade at McCord Junior High where he is an A student in GATE and plays the trumpet for the school band and ensemble group, and was on the track team this past school year. Jacob has been involved with First Lego League Robotics since he was in second grade. His team has made it to the state tournament every year. He has been playing baseball and basketball since preschool and has recently started playing tennis and golf. In his free time, Jacob enjoys watching TV and movies, hanging out with his friends, and of course, playing Fortnite.

For his Bar Mitzvah project, Jacob is raising money for the Children’s Tumor Foundation. A family friend was born with Neurofibromatosis Type 2, a genetic disorder that causes tumors to grow on his nerves and throughout his body. Jacob is hoping to help find a cure by raining money for research.

Jacob is looking forward to spending his special day with family and friends and would like to thank Cantor Lichterman and Fagie Benstein for all of their hard work in helping him prepare for his Bar Mitzvah.

An ethical will can be created in any number of formats and at any time. A few examples: • A letter written by a mother to her sons and daughters to be read after they are married • A written account by grandparents to their young grandchildren • A series of "pearls of wisdom" chronicled and passed down from a father to his son

David S. Stone Religious School We are looking forward to seeing everyone on Sunday August 26 for the "Welcome Back Breakfast" at Shomer Emunim, and the first day of Religious School. Students and parents from David S. Stone Religious School and Temple Shomer Emunim will get together at Shomer at 9:30 a.m. for light breakfast followed by a discussion to learn what Gliding Stars, an adaptive skating program, is all about. We will then walk the students back to Congregation B’nai Israel for the first day of class from 10:15 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

David S. Stone Religious School continues at NO COST to Families

During the breakfast, we will meet with Bill & Terri Himmel, chairs of Greater Toledo Gliding Stars. The Gliding Stars of Greater Toledo is part of a nationwide 26 week skating program for children and young adults with special physical and cognitive challenges. The program takes place at Tam-o-Shanter and has over 60 volunteers and over 30 participating skaters. Volunteers from this organization will present to our students at various times throughout the Religious School year.

We are happy to continue offering tuition-free religious education to all students of the David S. Stone Religious School

This is our third year with the students from Congregation Etz Chayim and we know that this year will be full of many enriching Jewish educational experiences.

This is made possible through the generosity of an anonymous donor who has established a fund at the Toledo Jewish Community Foundation to pay for tuition. We expect to continue providing religious school at no cost to Congregation B'nai Israel and Congregation Etz Chayim students.

Our classes will continue to develop deeper relationships with our chaverim in Israel by twinning classes here with classes in our partnership region of the Western Galilee. This program is supported by the Greater Toledo Jewish Federation.

We are looking forward to continuing this program of reaching out to our friends in Israel. Our past confirmation classes have had the opportunity to meet our chaverim in the Western Galilee on their confirmation trip to Israel. We intend to build those relationships with all of our currents students now, so they can have the opportunity to learn about Israel through meeting their Israeli peers, through joint art projects, dance, song, and videos in preparation to one day meet when they travel to Israel for their Confirmation trip. Our next Confirmation trip to Israel will be in June of 2020.

Our preschool class will meet again this year during normal religious school hours without parents attending. As long as students are ages 3-5 and potty trained, we welcome them to stay from 9:30-12:00 for a fun filled hands on Jewish curriculum. They will learn about synagogue symbols, Jewish holidays, Hebrew and much more. This class is focused on feeling comfortable in a Sunday school and synagogue environment and excitement for Jewish learning.
