On Rosh Hashanah it is traditional to walk to a river or spring (preferably one that has fish in it) and recite special prayers. The Tashlich prayer comes from the Book of Micha (7:18-20). After we say the prayers we throw bread crumbs into the water.

Tossing the bread crumbs on the water is symbolic of casting away our sins and starting a new year with a clean slate.

A FRENETIC PACED SUMMER So much for a quiet summer! Here at B’nai Israel things progress at a frene c pace.

First we installed a new board under new President Ron Wachsman. We wish them much success as together arm in arm we work for the benefit and constant improvement of our wonderful congrega on which soon will celebrate its truly amazing 150th Anniversary!

At the same me we thank Meira Zucker and her board for all they have done for B’nai Israel, along with past administra ons for their valuable, collec ve experience. I am personally indebted to the past board who saw fit to hire me, and recently persuaded me to commit long term.

By now you are all aware of our life‐changing Confirma on trip to Israel. A record 17 student par cipants made memories that will be with us forever. We are deeply indebted to the Kripke family who made this trip possible and for their con nued commitment to our congrega on. If you have not yet checked my blog which includes entries from all trip par cipants and some 700 photos (taken by Stuart Brody and myself), you can access it at www.cantorlichterman.com.

Jan and I had the wonderful opportunity to reunite with Rabbi Moshe and Meira Saks at the memorable wedding of their daughter Rina in New Jersey. I co‐officiated with Moshe in the presence of a group of friends from Toledo. Then in June Moshe and Meira returned to B’nai Israel for the wedding of Yaakov and Eliana Jiang.

Our popular Lunch and Learn program resumed in July and will con nue through August 14th. Join us Wednesdays for a lively discussion of current events of Jewish interest, good food, friends and cool temperatures.

Soon the High Holidays will be upon us. Join us for Selichot on Saturday night August 31st at 9 p.m. at B’nai Israel. The joint program with Temple Shomer Emunim will feature the excellent movie 18 Voices Present Kol Nidre, refreshments, Havdallah, and a service from 10‐11pm.

For the Holidays we look forward to welcoming Rabbi Jason Miller and his family from Detroit. I have spent the summer upda ng our High Holiday services and trust you will find them meaningful and inspira onal. When contacted by our ever‐ present stalwart minyan leader Howard Rosenbaum, kindly respond posi vely to his offer of honors during Holiday services.

Star ng in the fall we will present many intriguing programs including the USY’s Fall Boards/Freshman Kinnus October 3‐ 6, musical scholars in residence, a concert, revamped Sunday morning minyan at 9:30 a.m. during religious school, s mula ng adult educa on programs on Monday nights, frequent special Shabbat programming including a Friday night service with a family dinner, a presenta on to Sisterhood from our students about their Israel trip, and exci ng Men’s Club events to men on a few.

With saddened hearts we bid farewell to our office manager Kandee Storm who has been with B’nai Israel for 13 outstanding years. Kandee is moving to Florida and we shall miss her deeply even as we wish her success in her new endeavors. I am personally indebted to Kandee who did so much to acclimate me into the B’nai Israel family.

At the same me we warmly welcome Stephen Lamb who has been appointed Office Coordinator and Youth Director . Many of you know Stephen who has already made his presence felt as our new dynamic Youth Advisor and religious school teacher.

Stephen, like Kandee, will be wearing many hats, as he juggles his varied responsibili es. We believe he will contribute much to our office, as well as in the youth and educa on departments with new ideas. Stephen will also coordinate junior congrega on on the High Holidays.

During the rest of the summer I look forward to gree ng you at services, where large crowds have joined us every Shabbat for many special events and programs. Have a cool and safe summer.

Dear B’nai Israel Congregants, For many of us one of the most important parts of the services during the High Holy Days is the Yizkor Service on Yom Kippur. It is at that time when we turn our thoughts to our Loved Ones who have left this earth. We use this meaningful time to reflect upon their lives as well as the lives of all those who were members of our congregation, family and friends. In addition, we take the time to formally recognize the Martyrs of our people, most especially the Six Million who were murdered during the Holocaust.

As part of this process we print a more permanent Yizkor Book which will contain the Yizkor Service, a list of those on the synagogue’s Memorial Plaques, and a memorial to the Six Million. Not only is this book long lasting, but anyone who wishes will be able to take it home for use during the year.

I would urge everyone to take advantage of this opportunity as a way of remembering those dearest to us, and at the same time, helping the congregation. Please use the order form below or email by August 14 to be included this year If you wish to maintain your entry from last year, you need do nothing. The synagogue will bill you.

PRESIDENT’S CORNER I would like to thank the congregation for honoring me with the trust and confidence to be your President. I have been a proud member of Congregation B’nai Israel for 30 years and am excited about our future.

Although our membership has declined slightly over the years, our spirit and sense of community has remained strong. A good example of this is our well attended, beautiful Shabbat service. We have been averaging 70-80 people for most Shabbat services with frequent special events that have drawn larger crowds.

Not only is the service inspiring but the wonderful Kiddush lunch allows for an opportunity to relax and socialize with our extended family. In addition to Shabbat, we have many wonderful programs planned for the coming year including events that will be announced by the Sisterhood and Men’s club. I encourage you to participate and enjoy these programs.

Staff changes: We are beginning to prepare for the High Holidays with some changes at B’nai Israel. We welcome Rabbi Jason Miller who will be joining us for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. We have mixed emotions as we wish our Office Manager, Kandee Storm, well in the next chapter in her life. Kandee has kept CBI running smoothly for the last 13 years and we thank her for her huge contribution to the success of our congregation.

We also welcome Stephen Lamb as our new Office Coordinator and Youth Director. Stephen has been a great addition to our staff in his role as Youth Advisor and we look forward to having him in an expanded role.

Rabbi Search: We continue to search for a permanent Rabbi. Although the search committee spoke with several candidates we have not yet found the right individual. We will continue our search in a deliberate careful manner.

Community: In my role, I plan to continue our tradition of maintaining positive relations with the other congregations in our area. We’ve had wonderful community events in the past and will continue to seek opportunities for joint programs.

Thank you again for the chance to serve our congregation and look forward to seeing everyone at the holidays.

RABBI JASON MILLER B’nai Israel is happy to welcome guest Rabbi Jason Miller and his family to our congregation for the High Holidays.

Rabbi Miller has worked on college campuses with Hillel and has gained a reputation as a pied piper with Jewish teens and twenty somethings. He can talk about sports and movies just as easily as he can talk about Torah and Jewish law. Rabbi Jason is a frequent guest on HuffPost Live, the “Mojo in the Morning” show on Channel 955 in Detroit, Fox News, and the Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer on CNN. Trained as a kosher supervisor, Rabbi Jason is the founder and director of Kosher Michigan -- a kosher certification agency. He serves on the boards of several national and local organizations including the Jewish Outreach Institute, Michigan Jewish Sports Foundation, the Taubman Institute at the University of Michigan, JARC and Kadima.

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL Dear Parents, As you may have heard, there have been some changes implemented to the Congregation B’nai Israel Religious School program over the past year. We are very excited about these changes and are already hard at work to make sure that every child continues to have an outstanding experience at CBI Religious School this year!

All students, Pre-K through 10th grade will attend Religious School Sundays from 9:30 a.m.– noon.  Students in 3rd – 6th grade will also attend Religious School Wednesdays from 4:30 p.m.–6:15 p.m.  The Sunday and Wednesday programs will be coordinated so the teachers, curriculum, and programming will be completely aligned. 

Every aspect of the curriculum has been enhanced to ensure that it is cumulative from year to year, developmentally sensitive, engaging, and inspiring. At every grade level the curriculum will include Hebrew, prayer, and Judaic topics. In addition to regular class younger children will have library time and students through 6th grade will have music class on Sundays. Field trips, special events, and joint programming with the other synagogue Sunday Schools are also planned.

USY & KADIMA As our USYers and Kadimaniks make their way back from sleep away camps and summer programs, the youth department here at B’nai Israel is getting ready for another fun filled year. Under the leadership of newly elected BITUSY President Sam Zack, USY is busy making a jammed packed calendar with some old favorites and brand new events. Our Membership and Kadima Vice President Josh Sherman has great schedule of Kadima events planned including Kadima only Lounge Nights, apple picking and the return of The Cake Boss competition.

Continuing the tradition of giving back, USY will be collecting canned good and sundries for the Jewish Family Service Food Pantry. Please pick up a bag during Rosh Hashanah Services. USYers will gladly take your bags during Yom Kippur, and can assist in unloading them from your vehicle.

One of the highlights of our Fall programing will be CRUSY’s Fall Boards/Freshman Kinnus hosted here at B’nai Israel from October 3 through 6. This is a great opportunity our USYers to meet young Jews from around the mid-west and allows B’nai Israel to show off our wonderful congregation and beautiful building. We welcome the entire congregation to join us for Friday night and Shabbat morning services. It’s amazing to see our sanctuary and social hall filled with many Jewish youth.

One of the best ways you can help make this Kinnus a success is to open your home during the weekend to a USYer or Staff member. We are looking for housing on Thursday, October 3 and Friday, October 4. If you are able to house please see the kinnus form included in this bulletin.

This summer has also seen the redesign of the Youth Lounge. Along with our hockey table and ping pong table compliments of Phyllis Diamond, the Zack family was kind enough to donate a very nice foosball table. We are always looking for new additions, including board games and wii games. The youth lounge is open every Monday thru Thursday afternoon after school.

High Holiday Youth Services Junior Congregation For our High Holiday celebration this year the Youth Department and USY have teamed up for Junior Congregation, 5774.

Headed by our Youth Director Stephen Lamb and USY High Holiday Co-Chairs Deena Zucker and Sam Zack, Junior Congregation has something for all ages. This year will include fun-filled educational programming with USY led services, holiday games, singing, and storytelling. All activities will be age appropriate for Pre-K through 6th grade. Services will begin at 10:30 a.m. on both days of Rosh Hashanah and on Yom Kippur.

Babysitting will be available for infants and children thru four years of age from 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. on those days. Reservations are required and can be made by calling the office at 419-517-8400 or emailing slamb@cbitoledo.org. The cost is $5 per child.

REPORT OF SPRING RUMMAGE SALE WE DID IT AGAIN! Our spring rummage sale was a tremendous success with profits exceeding those from the fall sale by almost 5 %!

As in the past our success was not just luck or happenstance. It was the product of more than 70 volunteers, both men and women, from two synagogues who worked long hours and many days preparing for the event, making sure everything went smoothly during the sale and taking care of the numerous post sale tasks.

STAFF CHANGES B’nai Israel’s beloved Office Manager, Kandee Storm, will be leaving us on August 16. For over thirteen years, Kandee has been the voice and face of our office. Her knowledge of B’nai Israel and its members is incredible. Always cheerful and helpful, Kandee has shared our lives during times of happiness and sorrow.

We wish Kandee well as she begins her new life in Florida.

Stephen Lamb will be joining the staff as Office Coordinator and Youth Director. Stephen is a recent graduate of the University of Cincinnati with a degree in Judaic Studies. His enthusiasm and energy is inspiring. We welcome him to our B’nai Israel family.

Israel at 65: A Celebration of Art

Jewish Family Service art show set for October 17-20 at B’nai Israel As Jewish Federation of Greater Toledo celebrates Israel’s 65th birthday/anniversary, Jewish Family Service (JFS) is planning "Israel at 65: A Celebration of Art." Set for October 17-20 at Congregation B’nai Israel, the event will serve as a fundraiser for JFS. On the evening of October 17, an opening gala will be held for patrons and sponsors.

Presented by Safrai Gallery of Jerusalem, “Israel at 65: A

Celebration of Art” will feature a comprehensive collection of original oil paintings, watercolors original lithographs, and etchings for exhibition and sale.

The exhibition of more than 1,000 works of art will feature 100 artists from Israel and around the world, including such masters as Shemuel Katz, Dorit Levi and Shraga Weil.

The entire community is invited to view and purchase these unique offerings.
