Notes from the Cantor ……………………………………….

THOUGHTS ON BEING HONORED BY JTS As many of you are aware, the Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS) - the University of Conservative Judaism recently conferred upon me an honorary Doctorate of Music at a special academic convocation in New York City on March 12th 2018.

Jan and I were blessed to be joined by all three of our children, two children-in-law, several of their parents, as well as Jan’s mother. In addition we were honored by the presence of our own CBI president, Howard Rosenberg, and his wife Ann, who specially flew in that day from Toledo to be with us! It was particularly gratifying to have been honored by an academic institution (JTS) to which I had no prior affiliation, nor to its H.L. Miller Cantorial School. My late father, of blessed memory, was my ‘Cantorial school’ though I studied Judaics, music and voice at the University of Cape Town, New York’s Yeshiva University and with private voice coaches.

I never set out to become a full time Hazzan, I wanted to be an architect. The Torah portion we read during the week of my honoring was Vayikra, the beginning of Leviticus. It starts out, “Vayikra el Moshe vayedaber Hashem elav mei’ohel moed – God called out to Moses and spoke to him from the Tent of Meeting.” The commentators ask why this apparent redundancy? Could the Torah not simply have said that God spoke to Moses from the Tent, why does it first say that God called out to him?

Their answer is that Moses’ service to our People was not work, rather a ‘calling.’ Similarly, it was thanks to my father’s patiently teaching my brother and me from the earliest age, and my mother’s steadfast encouragement, that by the age of 18, as I completed my compulsory year’s South African military service, I was appointed professional Cantor in a Cape Town synagogue. By then, even before college, I had already acquired many of the pre-requisite skills a Hazzan needs. Then I embarked on years of Judaic and musical study. In the remarks to me as I received my Doctorate, it was pointed out that I have already accumulated 46 years of service as a professional Cantor.

I remember vividly how my pre-destined path in life began. My father took me for winter vacations to Durban, the third largest city in South Africa. Like Cape Town, Durban has magnificent beaches, but because it is situated on the Indian Ocean (Cape Town is on the Atlantic), in July Durban is warm and balmy during the South African winter. The deal was that I study Hazzanut with him every day for a few hours, then we could go out for special time together. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute, and as I reminisce, I realize how precious that time was, as he was to succumb at the relatively young age of 77, undoubtedly from the effects of the Shoah in which he was so deeply ensnared in the years 1939 – 1945.

As my studies progressed, Dad began to teach me Yiddish songs, insisting that every cantor who’s worth anything must have Yiddish in their repertoire. The first song he taught me was Reizele by Mordechai Gebirtig, a beautiful, simple love song in the shtetl of Eastern Europe. I started to cry! Startled, Dad asked why I was crying? “Its just a simple love song,” he pointed out. I explained that I was crying for that lost Jewish world. He exclaimed that this sensitivity and passion made my becoming a Hazzan inevitable.

And so I received my “Calling”.

The doctoral convocation ceremony was impressive, emotional, and on time! I was proud to be associated with the other 19 honorees, all distinguished in their respective communities, all having devoted their lives to the Cantorate, their community, Conservative Judaism, and klal Israel. I accepted my award in humble recognition that it was attained through the support and efforts of many. I share it with all who have contributed towards this avodat hakodesh – my holy, musical journey, family, teachers, congregations and students of all ages. Supreme amongst these are Jan and our children who have always been by my side in this most demanding profession which often involves seven day weeks. My father-in-law, Jerry Lacker, has been extremely helpful to me in my career in the U.S.A., which I deeply appreciate.

And I share my award with you, our chosen CBI congregation and Toledo community of the past seven years. May we and all Israel thrive and prosper, as we sit down to retell our history at our own Pesach sedarim.

You Never Know How Many Lives You Touch Ann and I just returned from several days in New York City. We always love being there, enjoying all that the Big Apple has to offer. We spent time with Ann’s sisters, visited a niece with new twin girls, ate at delis and kosher restaurants, walked many miles, shopped a little, went to the Jewish Museum, and saw two Broadway shows. But the highlight of the trip was attending the Jewish Theological Seminary Academic Convocation honoring 20 Cantors, including our own Ivor Lichterman. The honorees each received an honorary Doctorate of Music in recognition of their careers of service.

Having spent my own working life in academia, I have attended a few academic convocations, graduations, and other events. Most are not particularly memorable. However, this event, held at the Sutton Place Synagogue, is something that we will long remember. The entire event was inspiring and quite beautiful. Following the processional, the Hazzanim sang the Star-Bangled Banner, then Hatikvah. It was impossible not to be moved as the sanctuary was filled with their voices, each note magnificently intoned in a way that can hardly be described with only words. A bit later in the program, we were treated to Sim Shalom by the honorees and the Chorus of the Cantorial School, and other music by the chorus later in the program. Each honoree came forward, and we heard a bit about each one’s contributions as they received their degrees. It was quite inspiring. Unlike most academic events, it ended a bit ahead of schedule, and also unlike most academic events I have attended, I would not have minded if it had gone on a bit longer.

One of the things that stood out to me was the role of women in our Conservative movement. Given that the honorees were of Cantor Lichterman’s “vintage”, or more, it was no surprise that most were men. On the other hand, we were welcomed by Rabbi Rachel Ain, of the Sutton Place Synagogue, and heard from Hazzan Alisa Pomerantz-Boro, President of the Cantors Assembly. Plus, three of the honorees were women, including the first woman Cantor to be ordained by the Conservative movement. In contrast to the group of honorees, the chorus of Cantorial students had more women than men. Right in front of us we could see the changes that have occurred within a relatively short time, and the significant leadership role that women now play as clergy in Conservative Judaism. My mind turned to Rabbi Fishel Pearlmutter, of blessed memory, Rabbi of our own congregation and a champion for inclusion of women in the clergy.

During the program, one of the speakers noted that you never know how many lives you touch. I think that for all of us, this is an important reminder of how our actions can have an impact on others, even when we are unaware of it. A few times, my wife has met a former student who thanked her for helping them find their way in life. I occasionally get a thank-you from a former student, or bump into a physician who was a student.

Most of the time, we try to do our best, but often don’t know how much of an impact we have. Finding out that you have somehow touched a life is a big plus for anyone, and reminds you what is important. So too for clergy who have so many responsibilities to so many people, and who can make a tremendous difference especially at times of great joy, and of great distress. I often marvel at how our Hazzan can go from one thing to another, yet still hit the right tone and give each person or family the attention and guidance they need. It must be exhausting. Like anyone else, clergy also need to be reminded of how they have improved so many lives. Perhaps that was part of what made the convocation so meaningful as we celebrated the many ways the honorees had helped improve the lives of others.

I hope you will join us for Shabbat on April 21 as we honor and celebrate Hazzan Lichterman, letting him know all that he means to our lives here at B’nai Israel, to the whole Toledo-area Jewish Community, and to klal yisrael.

CBI PESACH KASHRUT ALERT 2016/5776 In November 2015 the Committee on Jewish Law of Conservative Judaism announced a decision permitting kitniyot (ie. rice, corn, legumes) on Pesach.

Here are some guidelines.

1. Fresh corn on the cob, fresh beans may be used on Pesach and purchased during the holiday.

2. Dried kitniyot can be purchased before the holiday bagged or in boxes and checked for hametz.

These should not be purchased from bins as the bins may contain hametz.

3. Canned kitniyot must have Pesach certification since canning may involve hametz.

4. Frozen raw kitniyot like corn, edamame, soy beans etc. may be purchased in bags before the holiday & do not require Pesach certification, but should be checked for hametz.

5. Processed kitniyot including tofu require Pesach certification as they may contain hametz.

6. Those who continue the restriction on kitniyot, may eat from dishes and utensils that have come into contact with kitniyot on the holiday, and may eat kitniyot derivatives like oil etc.

Mehirat Hametz— The Selling of Hametz ‫מכירת חמץ‬

Preparation for Passover The ceremony of removing leaven (bedikat Hametz) is to take place Thursday evening, March 29, 2018.

Hametz may be eaten until 10:00 a.m. on Friday March 30, 2018. The Passover home atmosphere is created each year by the traditional practice of thoroughly cleansing the home, and by the removal of hametz, or leaven, in preparation for Pesach,as well as throughout the Passover days, both at home and away.

The term hametz is applied not only to foods, but also to the dishes and utensils in which the foods are prepared or served during the year. “Any manner of hametz (leavened food or utensils) owned by a Jew during the Passover holiday is forbidden to use.”

Since conditions make it impossible to literally fulfill the Biblical command to destroy all leavened products, our sages instituted a practice called Mehirat Hametz, the selling of hametz. We are reminded of the necessity to divest ourselves of ownership of hametz, and make our home ritually ready.

The sale of hametz is conducted between a representative of the synagogue and a non-Jew. After Passover the hametz is repurchased by the Jewish community.

If you would like Cantor Lichterman to sell your hametz, please fill out the form and return it to the synagogue office not later than Friday March 30, following morning minyan.

Don’t Sell All your Hametz!

When cleaning out your cupboard and pantries in preparation for Pesach, consider donating unopened packages of hametz and canned goods to a food pantry such as JFS. Items such as crackers, rice, cookies, lentils, tuna, and peanut butter will be gratefully accepted by these organizations and passed on to those whose cupboards are empty.

Let those who are hungry this Passover season share in your celebration by receiving food that you might otherwise “sell” or dispose of. Food can be brought to the synagogue where receptacles will be clearly marked.

It will be difficult to learn to get along without Leslie who has done a really magnificent job.

It is my pleasure to inform you that Gabi Mallin has now joined our office staff. I think this is fabulous news for our congregation and I know that we all, as congregants and as board members, look forward to working with Gabi. Of course, the downside of this is that Gabi had to resign from the board when she started her new position. I know we will miss her important contributions to our synagogue leadership. With the loss of Gabi from the board, Mindy Slutsky has agreed to fill the position of Vice President for Youth Activities for the remainder of this year.

David S. Stone Religious School has some incredible community events coming up in April. The Jewish Federation of Greater Toledo’s Jewish Disability Awareness and Inclusion Month program will be on Sunday April 8th and will take place from 9:30 a.m.-11:00 a.m. at Temple Shomer Emunim. We strongly encourage all families to stay for the program.

Sunday April 15th is the community Yom Hashoah event during part of Religious school. This will be for students in grades 4th and up. We will go to Shomer Emunim with the students from 10:30a.m.-11:30a.m.

On Sunday April 29th, we are excited to participate in the “Israel at 70” Celebration. This fabulous event will take place in the grassy area between Shomer Emunim and Congregation B’nai Israel. There will be an Israeli food truck and fun activities for all! See ad on page 15 for more information.

Passover University………………. ……….…………………….

After months and months and planning, Passover University was a huge team effort.

Some of us even learned to use a glue gun! It had been over ten years since we had a congregational Passover University. From the our 3 year old pre kindergarten students working with their parents on interactive Passover projects, to grandparents attending workshops of their choice, it was morning of sheer delight and joy!

This project could not have been done without the most dedicated, creative, committee who happily gave months of their time: Hazzan Ivor Lichterman, Sharon Stein, Cathy Sperling, Miriam Beckerman, Judy Weinberg, Gabi Mallin, Arleen Russell, Ellen Wilensky, Kim Strole and Kim Brody Wishing everyone a sweet Passover. It was an awesome project.
