Notes from the Cantor ……………………………………….

Rosh Hashanah, it would be appropriate and comforting if we came close, at least filling the sanctuary, and Miriam Beckerman has assured me the Kiddush will be great, even if no bagels. So I see no reason that our sanctuary should not be filled. The argument that everyone is tired from preparing for Pesach and the seder, does not apply, since everyone is equally tired from Rosh Hashanah prepping. Yet the shul is full on those holidays. Why is Pesach different?

In addition to reaffirmation, we will also chant tefilat tal – prayers for dew. This is another common aspect of Pesach and the High Holidays. The magnificent nusach/traditional chant of tal is reminiscent of Neilah, the closing service of Yom Kippur. I will similarly wear white as we beseech God for dew, rain and water, without which we cannot exist. It is akin to praying for life, a central theme of the High Holidays.

Also common to both Pesach and the High Holidays is Yizkor – the service of remembrance, as we do on Yom Kippur.

This will take place on the last day of Pesach, April 30 th. Our sanctuary should also be filled for Yizkor. Once a year on Yom Kippur is not adequate for remembering our loved ones in a religious context.

Memory is an essential aspect of Pesach. In order for the new nation of Israel, just freed from over 200 years of slavery, to move forward, they had to remember where they came from. The Torah and our liturgy are replete with reminders of our slavery.

Zecher liytsiat Mitsrayim – remembrance of the Exodus, the Kiddush tells us, and the Magid/Telling the Story section of the seder begins, “Avadim hayinu…we were slaves…” It therefore stands to reason that Pesach is, amongst other things, about Yizkor, remembering.

A potential opportunity for elevating your spiritual motivation around the season of Pesach will occur on Sunday April 3rd @ 10:30 am. As part of CBI’s excellent adult education program initiated by Buzz Romanoff, he has invited me to speak about the spiritual significance of Sefirat Ha’omer – The Counting of the Omer, the 49 (50?) day period connecting Pesach to Shavuot. I look forward to seeing many of you there!

Back to Basics

Matzah is basic. It is deliberately so! Yes we all try to dress it up. We add a shmeer - butter, jam, cream cheese, even chocolate and more creative ideas. Manufacturers keep coming out with more fancy matzah. But no matter how much you try, it remains plain old matzah, from the simple and ancient days of the Exodus. It is not intended to be a gourmet bread or cracker.

Passover is after all, like the High Holidays, a back to basics holiday.

Pesach’s very name in the Torah is not Pesach; that is a later application. The Torah simply calls it chag hamatzot – the matzah holiday. It is also called chag ha’aviv – the holiday of spring. So we eat matzah and “spring-clean” to rid our homes of chamets. But what could the name chag hamatsot denote beyond merely eating matzah? And can there be more to chamets removal than the mere and rather mundane physical cleansing of our homes as daunting a task as this is for those who still take chamets removal seriously?

Statistics indicate that Pesach (ie. the seder) is the most observed holiday amongst Jews around the world, even more than Yom Kippur. Additionally, Pesach is exactly 6 months from the High Holidays. I therefore see it as an ideal opportunity, like the High Holidays, to adjust our spiritual barometers, which I believe needs to be done more than once a year.

The frenetic pace of the lives we live; cell phones, computers, internet, texting, tweeting, pursuing a living, media bombardment, politics etc, demand a constant spiritual correction and readjustment. The Talmud actually states in Tractate Rosh Hashanah that there are 4 New Years, one of which occurs now Rosh Chodesh Nisan, the beginning of the month in which Pesach occurs, since Pesach is when we officially became a People.

The removal of chamets should not be seen as a mere physical act. It should apply, perhaps even more so, to our spiritual lives. Cleansing our homes could be accompanied by a simultaneous cleansing of our minds and souls. As we go through the tedious and tiring chore of cleaning for the holiday, it is easy to come to the realization that the pursuit of things, of stuff, may have no enduring value. Sure we all collect things. I’m the biggest culprit. But for ultimate happiness and fulfilment, I believe a healthy spiritual life is essential for us as humans and Jews.

That’s why matzah is basic! Its supposed to be. Pesach is back to basics! It is for this exact reason that on the 1 st day of Pesach, Shabbat April 23rd, we will have a special Service of Reaffirmation. While it is not realistic to expect a crowd like on Hazzan Ivor Lichterman

Passover is unique. There is no other holiday or religious observance like it in all the world.

We have our Rosh Hashanah; the varied nations have a New Year that may well be celebrated differently but it is universally observed. We have Yom Kippur; every religious group observes a penitential day or season. The various agricultural festivals are duplicated throughout the world as a very human reaction to our common need and gratitude for sustenance. In a multitude of ethnic and national patterns liberty is celebrated and freedom from oppression or political liberty is observed and feted.

The Jewish people, historically, have not been the only ones to know the heavy and pressing boot of a particularly cruel oppression through slavery. Slavery has existed as an institution of economic domination and exploitation long before Moses returned to his native land with his brother Aaron to seek freedom for his people.

Hammurabi, who lived some four hundred years before Moses, had cruel and abusive regulations to control slaves. Closer to our era, in the middle ages, the serf was an agricultural laborer bound under the feudal system to work on his lord's estate. The serf was a vassal and a chattel of his lord; essentially a slave..

Shortly after the American Revolution, during the Barbary Wars the U.S. Navy successfully fought with the Moslem North African pirates to free captured American seamen who had been flogged into slavery: Islamic law permits slavery. The U.S. Marines’ Hymn recalls their military prowess during that war with pride.

Clearly, the most dramatic and still echoing historical reality that we now know most about was the cruel and demeaning slave trade that brought some thousands of blacks from their native Africa to toil for white masters in the still young United States. The sudden crack of the overseers’ whips herding and controlling the plantation slaves has a continuing echo in our time.

The short period of time since the thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution has only given the black community time to intermix hope with resentment.

The thoughtful beginnings of our modern Passover rituals and practices were not originated quickly and shortly after our hurried exodus from Egypt. The Jewish people had to create a new history with centuries of growth and progress infused with hope, tragedy and triumph. The Haggadah tells of the past richly and passionately foretelling a future where we and all peoples will know of a time when humans will deal with others humanely. It is a Hanukkah hymn that ends, “which will see all men free.” That exalted ideal is the mirror image of the promises derived from our ancient tale of debasement and suffering along with our reaching out to liberty. . At the Seder we open the door for Elijah and invite “all” into our homes. Passover remembers the past; Passover express a valiant hope to promise the future for us and for all mankind.

Join us for minyan and study Because the first-born of the Israelites were saved from the tenth plague, tradition requires that all first-born Jewish males fast from Erev Pesach until the Seder. The fast is called Taanit Bechorim. However, the law states that when any Jew hears the completion of a tractate of Rabbinic Literature, it is cause to celebrate and cancels the fast.

Join us on Friday, April 22 at 7:00 a.m. at Congregation B’nai Israel for a Siyyum Bechorim, and those who participate are exempted from fasting.

CBI PESACH KASHRUT ALERT 2016/5776

In November 2015 the Committee on Jewish Law of Conservative Judaism announced a decision permitting kitniyot on Pesach.

Here are some guidelines.

1. Fresh corn on the cob, fresh beans may be used on Pesach and purchased during the holiday.

2. Dried kitniyot can be purchased before the holiday bagged or in boxes and checked for chamets.

These should not be purchased from bins as the bins may contain chamets.

3. Canned kitniyot must have Pesach certification since canning may involve chamets.

4. Frozen raw kitniyot like corn, edamame, soy beans etc. may be purchased in bags before the holiday & do not require Pesach certification, but should be checked for chamets.

5. Processed kitniyot including tofu require Pesach certification as they may contain chamets.

6. Those who continue the restriction on kitniyot, may eat from dishes and utensils that have come into contact with kitniyot on the holiday, and may eat kitniyot derivatives like oil etc.

Mehirat Hametz— The Selling of Hametz ‫מכירת חמץ‬

The sale of hametz is conducted between a representative of the synagogue and a non-Jew. After Passover the hametz is repurchased by the Jewish community.

Preparation for Passover The ceremony of removing leaven (bedikat Hametz) is to take place Thursday evening, April 21, 2016. Hametz may beeaten until 10:00 a.m. on Friday, April 22, 2016.

The Passover home atmosphere is created each year by the traditional practice of thoroughly cleansing the home, and by the removal of hametz, or leaven, in preparation for Pesach,as well as throughout the Passover days, both at home and away.

If you would like Cantor Lichterman to sell your hametz, please fill out the form and return it to the synagogue office not later than Friday, April 22, following morning minyan.

Don’t Sell All your Hametz!

When cleaning out your cupboard and pantries in preparation for Pesach, consider donating unopened packages of hametz and canned goods to a food pantry. Items such as crackers, rice, cookies, lentils, tuna, and peanut butter will be gratefully accepted bythese organizations and passed on to those whose cupboards are empty.

The term hametz is applied not only to foods, but also to the dishes and utensils in which the foods are prepared or served during the year. “Any manner of hametz (leavened food or utensils) owned by a Jew during the Passover holiday is forbidden to use.”

Since conditions make it impossible to literally fulfill the Biblical command to destroy all leavened products, our sages instituted a practice called Mehirat Hametz, the selling of hametz. We are reminded of the necessity to divest ourselves of ownership of hametz, and make our home ritually ready.

Let those who are hungry this Passover season share in your celebration by receiving food that you might otherwise “sell” or dispose of. Food can be brought to the synagogue where receptacles will be clearly marked.

Authorization for Sale of Hametz I, the undersigned, fully empower and permit Hazzan Ivor Lichterman to act in my behalf to sell all hametz possessed by me—knowingly or unknowingly—as defined by Torah and rabbinic law, and to lease all places wherein hametz owned may be found. Concert and Lecture The Life and Works of Richard Stöhr Stefan Koch, cellist, Robert Conway, pianist

SUNDAY, APRIL 17, 2016 10:30a.m.-12:00 p.m. in the B’nai Israel Sanctuary Richard Stöhr was born into a prominent Jewish family in Vienna in 1874. He received a doctorate in Music from the Vienna Academy of Music where he studied composition with Robert Fuchs (Mahler's teacher). Stöhr taught at the Vienna Academy of Music from 1901 to 1938 (full professor from 1915) and was the author of half a dozen widely used textbooks on music theory, all the while composing in every major classical genre and having dozens of performances of his works each year.

In 1938 he was forced by the Nazis to resign from the Academy and to emigrate, and he came to the U.S. where he was able to obtain teaching positions at the Curtis Institute and later at the Vermont Conservatory and at St. Michael's College. During his half-century teaching career his students included some of the biggest names in 20th Century classical music: Herbert von Karajan, Rudolf Serkin, Erich Leinsdorf, Artur Rodzinski, Samuel Barber, Leonard Bernstein and Marlene Dietrich. Stöhr's compositional output includes symphonies, operas, concertos, sonatas, songs and many smaller works.

When the composer died in 1967, all of this music was deposited in the library of St. Michael's College in Vermont, where it languished for many years until 2010, when Stöhr’s grandson, Dan, produced a CD of his grandfather's first string quartet and some solo piano works.

Dan and Stefan Koch, a cellist for the Lansing, Michigan Symphony, were introduced by mutual friends, and together they produced another CD. Mr. Koch and Mr. Robert Conway, a pianist, are giving the first performances ever in the U.S. of Stöhr's works for cello. Their CD of this music was released on Toccata Classics (London, UK) in 2014. Mr. Koch and Mr. Conway will also present a slide show on the composer's life.

BRIGHTON BEACH Memoirs Fifteen-year-old Eugene Jerome is desperately trying to uncover life's mysteries, but his family keeps hiding the clues. Even so, he manages to keep his priorities - baseball and girls - firmly in order throughout Neil Simon's hilarious adaptation of his Broadway hit about growing up in Brooklyn during the late 1930's. Life is definitely never dull with seven people living under the same roof. Dad works two jobs to make ends meet, older brother Stanley is eager to dispense sage advice, and Aunt Blanche tries to cope as a single parent. Brighton Beach Memoirs is a wonderful, semiautobiographical comedy with heart, wit and hysterical insights into family life and growing up - just a little off-center.

B’nai Israel Confirmation

We had a lot of fun in our Parent/Toddler class for Purim. The children made delicious hamentaschen, sang Purim songs, made graggers filled with Purim symbols, and made fabulous crowns.

It was a busy and exciting morning for all! They even took a project and songs home with them to learn about Purim with their families. It is such a delight to see all of our youngest children having so much fun together.

Our Confirmation trip to Israel is quickly approaching. The students continue to learn about current events in Israel, correspond or skype with peers in Israel, and brush up on their Hebrew. They are looking forward to meeting their Israeli friends when they visit Israel in June. They have two additional classes to attend with their parents on Monday April 4th from 6:00-7:00p.m. and Sunday May 22 from 9:30-10:30a.m.to prepare for their trip of a lifetime.

Please mark your calendars for Sunday, April 17. All are welcome to join our K- 6th graders in an interactive Model Seder led

by Cantor Lichterman from 9:30-10:30 am. Grades 7th -10th will attend a special program with our musical guests and speaker the morning of April 17 as well. Come back and join us for a PrePassover pasta/pizza party that evening.

YOU are invited to celebrate Shabbat with a pot luck dinner Friday, May 13 6:30 p.m.

Members of our congregation will simultaneously host a Shabbat dinner in their homes. The main dish (typically dairy) will be provided and guests will be asked to bring an assigned item such as a salad, challah, wine, or dessert.

Bring your family and friends; this is not a members-only event! This is an opportunity to eat some delicious food, get to know some people better, meet some new people and have a great time together.

CBI Security Update

COMMUNITY GARDEN

We are all aware that synagogues, much like schools and theaters, are considered targets of opportunity. In light of these concerns, Congregation B’nai Israel will be initiating prudent building security changes.  Monday through Friday morning and evening minyan, only the side entrance will be unlocked.  Saturday morning Shabbat services, both entrances will be unlocked with someone monitoring the hallway. After 11:30 a.m., both doors will be locked.  On Sunday, both doors will be open, again with someone monitoring. Once minyan begins, the side door will be locked.  For S.O.A.P., both doors will be open but locked at the beginning of the program.  For Wednesday afternoon Hebrew School, all doors will be left locked.  During special events, such as a movie, committee meeting, etc. if the main door is open, it will be locked at the beginning of the event.

Wireless doorbell buttons have been installed at both doors. Please use these for admittance should you find the door locked.

Additional changes may be made in the future.

We apologize for any inconvenience that these procedures may cause. Our objective is to insure everyone’s safety. You can all assist with this by remembering the phrase: “If you see something; say something!”

Spring is finally here! April is when we start waking up our vegetable garden by feeding it some yummy potash and manure. Anything to keep our veggies happy!
