Notes from the Cantor ……………………………………….

The ‘Afikomen’ During the past few months our congregants have been privileged to experience so many special events. Following are just a few examples: We are still feeling the afterglow of yet another fabulous Purim, the highlight of which was the spiel, again written and produced by 3Z Productions – our own so talented Meira, Sophie and Deena Zucker (who fortunately was home from college and able to participate!). Our congregation’s sincerest yasher koach and kudos go to the 3Z’s and all the wonderful participants of all ages for another appropriately fun-filled Purim experience! I can’t wait to see what next year’s production holds in store for us.

We joyfully celebrated the aufrufs of Adam Goldberg and Andrea Baer, and our daughter Jackie Lichterman and Alex Strauss. Our family is deeply grateful to so many of you, our CBI family who celebrated with us, donated generously and sent gifts in their honor. At another special shabbat service we bid farewell to our dear Inge Horowitz who has moved to the DC area to be close to her children. We will miss her so very much and wish her health and joy in her new home! We celebrated Sisterhood Shabbat with our women leading most of the service, and New Member Shabbat during which we welcomed many new members and honored participants in our conversion program who will soon become full members.

The celebration of our 150th Anniversary continued unabated with A Look Back - a video presentation by our own indefatigable Lannie Katzman, and the dedication of CBI’s newly-published book of our members’ oral histories compiled by Cathy Sperling and the 150th Committee. We were treated to stimulating adult education presentations by Rabbi Alan Sokobin, Dr David Weinberg, and Dr Yonatan Miller, Dir ector of The Center for Religious Under standing at the Univer sity of Toledo.

If Purim has passed, Pesach will soon be here! Join us for our many Pesach services (see schedule on page 4) particularly the 1st day for our Ceremony of Reafffirmation, mar king exactly 6 months since the High Holidays, as well as our musically uplifting TEFILLAT TAL - prayers for dew. On the last (8th) day of Pesach Rabbi Jason Miller will join us for our Yizkor Service.

In his wonderful adult education presentation, Dr. Yonatan Miller referenced the Pew report of 2013 which indicated that the Pesach seder is the most observed Jewish tradition amongst American Jews, with 70% stating that they attended a seder, while fasting on part or all of Yom Kippur was observed by just over half.

The Babylonian Talmud states (Pesachim 36a) that matzah is called lechem oni – the bread of affliction not so much, to symbolize our ancestors’ hasty exit from captivity, but rather from the Hebrew word ‘onim’ – meaning - bread over which we discuss through ‘many words.’ As explained by CLAL – the National Jewish Center for Learning and Leadership, onim represents “the intellectual give and take that is the hallmark of our freedom.” Clal adds that the familiar Afikomen without which traditionally the meal cannot be concluded, “needs to be found wherever, or with whomever, it is hidden.”

Perhaps therein lies the secret to the continuing popularity of the seder amongst Jews, no matter their level of Jewish involvement. The 4 sons all very different (or children both boys and girls, as some would have it today) all come to the table, no matter their level. It is up to us to try to engage them, including even the Afikomen of the missing link, the 5th child who is absent fr om the table!

President’s Message…………………………….…………...

Terrorism by Telephone.

There is an old story about an old Jew. He is lamenting all the tragedies that have befallen the Jewish people throughout our history. Finally, he cries to the heavens, “You made us the chosen people! Just for once, couldn’t you choose someone else?”

We are all too familiar with the current news of anti-Semitism and threats to Jewish sites and organizations. The telephone threats that are occurring repeatedly take a big toll, interrupting lives and instilling fear. This is terrorism, delivered by telephone. Our own JCC received one of these calls not long ago, triggering an evacuation and subsequent search of all the buildings on campus. It is hard to know how much of this is new antiSemitism, or if has just become more acceptable to express it. Some would argue that the current political and social climate brings out the worst in us. It certainly feels that way. How we, as individuals, as organizations, and as a society deal with it can help us cope, or can magnify the damage to our psyche.

Our congregation has taken several specific measures, and continues to do so. On behalf of our congregation, I thank those who have been the leaders. Chuck Traugott has worked continuously to improve our security. He continues to lead the way, with the help of Brad Schusterman and Jerry Russell, who are the other members of our Security Committee. Some changes are visible, like the improved lighting, while others are less obvious, such as the upgraded security cameras. Chuck is our liaison with the Sylvania Township Police, other law enforcement agencies, and with the Federation on security matters. Our Police Department, led by Chief Boehme, has been an absolutely wonderful, professional and valuable resource guiding us in this process. One visible change is the presence of off-duty officers providing security on Shabbat and during Sunday School and special events. I want to especially thank those donors, mentioned elsewhere in this bulletin, who have stepped forward to help pay for these officers. With the help of these people, and others, we will do our best to ensure a synagogue where you can feel both safe and welcome.

How do we, as individuals, cope with hatred? We can’t make it go away. Rather, we can seek sources of strength. Certainly having a supportive community around us is very important. We have our own synagogue community, and being together with each other provides some inner strength. Being involved with the larger Jewish community, in Toledo and beyond, also brings positive feelings. But, can we derive strength from the larger community? Who are the spokesmen for decency and tolerance? For us, on the receiving end of phoned-in terrorism, and fearing much worse, we look for moral leadership. I think there have been too few examples, but let me just mention a couple. One occurred just the day before I sat down to start this column. All 100 U.S. Senators signed a letter to the Homeland Security Secretary, the Attorney General and the FBI Director urging them to assist law enforcement agencies in protecting Hebrew schools, Jewish community centers and synagogues, and to work to prosecute the perpetrators.

Among those leading the effort was Rob Portman of Ohio. This is hardly a political risk for the senators, and one could argue that it should not be necessary. But I would say it is necessary to show leadership, speak forcefully, and provide comfort to the victims. Anyway, when is the last time the Senate was unanimous about anything?

Another example of moral leadership comes from non-Jews who raised money in support of the Jewish community. One report that I found encouraging was about two Muslim activists, Linda Sarsour and Tarek El-Messidi, who asked Muslims to donate $20,000 in a crowd-funding effort to repair hundreds of Jewish headstones that were toppled near St. Louis. Their goal was reached in only three hours.

By the time you are reading this, Ann and I will be on our way back from Israel. I pray that by then the perpetrators will have been caught, and that a new sense of outrage against anti-Semitism and all forms of intolerance and hatred may arise amongst all of our fellow citizens. That will by my prayer at the Kotel.

NOTE: This alert is reprinted from last Pesach.

CBI PESACH KASHRUT ALERT 2016/5776 In November 2015 the Committee on Jewish Law of Conservative Judaism announced a decision permitting kitniyot on Pesach.

Here are some guidelines.

1. Fresh corn on the cob, fresh beans may be used on Pesach and purchased during the holiday.

2. Dried kitniyot can be purchased before the holiday bagged or in boxes and checked for chamets.

These should not be purchased from bins as the bins may contain chamets.

3. Canned kitniyot must have Pesach certification since canning may involve chamets.

4. Frozen raw kitniyot like corn, edamame, soy beans etc. may be purchased in bags before the holiday & do not require Pesach certification, but should be checked for chamets.

5. Processed kitniyot including tofu require Pesach certification as they may contain chamets.

6. Those who continue the restriction on kitniyot, may eat from dishes and utensils that have come into contact with kitniyot on the holiday, and may eat kitniyot derivatives like oil etc.

The sale of hametz is conducted between a representative of the synagogue and a non-Jew. After Passover the hametz is repurchased by the Jewish community.

If you would like Cantor Lichterman to sell your hametz, please fill out the form and return it to the synagogue office not later than Monday, April 10, following morning minyan.

Don’t Sell All your Hametz!

When cleaning out your cupboard and pantries in preparation for Pesach, consider donating unopened packages of hametz and canned goods to a food pantry such as JFS. Items such as crackers, rice, cookies, lentils, tuna, and peanut butter will be gratefully accepted by these organizations and passed on to those whose cupboards are empty.

Let those who are hungry this Passover season share in your celebration by receiving food that you might otherwise “sell” or dispose of. Food can be brought to the synagogue where receptacles will be clearly marked.

Mehirat Hametz— The Selling of Hametz ‫מכירת חמץ‬

Preparation for Passover The ceremony of removing leaven (bedikat Hametz) is to take place Sunday evening, April 9, 2017. Hametz may be eaten until 10:00 a.m. on Monday, April 10, 2017. The Passover home atmosphere is created each year by the traditional practice of thoroughly cleansing the home, and by the removal of hametz, or leaven, in preparation for Pesach,as well as throughout the Passover days, both at home and away.

The term hametz is applied not only to foods, but also to the dishes and utensils in which the foods are prepared or served during the year. “Any manner of hametz (leavened food or utensils) owned by a Jew during the Passover holiday is forbidden to use.”

Since conditions make it impossible to literally fulfill the Biblical command to destroy all leavened products, our sages instituted a practice called Mehirat Hametz, the selling of hametz. We are reminded of the necessity to divest ourselves of ownership of hametz, and make our home ritually ready.

I, the undersigned, fully empower and permit Hazzan Ivor Lichterman to act in my behalf to sell all hametz possessed by me—knowingly or unknowingly—as defined by Torah and rabbinic law, and to lease all places wherein hametz owned may be found. CBI Receives Prestigious Grant Award

CBI RELIGIOUS SCHOOL TO BE FREE FOR ALL FAMILIES! We are happy to announce that starting next year families of students enrolled in the David S. Stone Religious School will not have to pay tuition. An anonymous donor has established a fund in the Toledo Jewish Community Foundation to make this possible. The fund is specifically designed to replace the tuition costs that would otherwise be charged to families for both Sunday School and Hebrew School. We look forward to another wonderful year at the David S. Stone School.

The National Center to Encourage Judaism and the Federation of Jewish Men's Clubs have selected CBI to receive a $1,000 grant, one of 20 grants awarded to Conservative/Masorti Congregations in North America, in their Creating a Welcoming Website award. 

 

Upon completion, our synagogue will: Be honored with a Certificate of Excellence presented by the FJMC and the NCEJ, along with the award, presented at the FJMC Keruv Annual Retreat in Bethesda, MD. Be invited to present their project at the FJMC International Convention in July 2017.

David S. Stone Religious School Religious School to be free to families!

We are happy to announce that, beginning next year, families of students enrolled in the David S. Stone Religious School will not have to pay tuition. See page 6 for more details!

We are looking forward to having our Model Seder at Congregation Etz Chayim on Sunday, April 9. All K– 8th grade classes will meet at Etz Chayim on the morning of April 9. The students will have class at 9:45 and conclude with the Model Seder led by Rabbi Rubin and Cantor Lichterman by 11:30. Parents are encouraged to return to attend the Model Seder with their students by 10:45 at Etz Chayim. All of Peter Silverman’s confirmation class will meet at CBI on April 9 from 9:30-12:00.

Parents are also encouraged to join us for the annual Community Yom HaShoah event on Sunday, April 30. Our students are involved in the project Stones to Remember the Children. They will be painting stones in memory of the children who perished in the Holocaust and placing them at the Holocaust memorial in the front of our campus. This is a collaborative project with all Jewish students in our community.

Please mark your calendars for Saturday, May 13 for David S Stone Religious School closing Shabbat. We would love to have all students participate in our special Shabbat service. Please let us know if they are able to participate.

Friday May 5, 2017 (times will vary) You are invited to enjoy a wonderful Shabbat potluck dinner with your CBI friends in the home of a member. This is a great way to get to know other members and make new acquaintances. Families with children, couples, singles, all are welcome! Dinners will be either Kosher, vegetarian, or dairy.

You are welcome to join us at the homes of Hope and Greg Davis Ellen Federman Leslie and Michael Podolsky Ann and Howard Rosenberg The main dish (typically dairy) will be provided and guests will be asked to bring an assigned item such as a salad, challah, wine, or dessert. We will try to accommodate special requests such as Kashruth, animal-free homes, glutenfree, allergies, homes with your friends, etc.

Congregation B’nai Israel 150th Closing Program and Annual Meeting.

Spring is finally here! April is when we start waking up our vegetable garden by feeding it some yummy potash and manure.

Anything to keep our veggies happy! Next month we'll be planting and we welcome anyone who would like to help. Stay tuned for more details!

Kitchen Corner

Two years ago, Phyllis Diamond and Shirley Gerber sponsored a Shabbat Kiddush in honor of their birthdays. When I met with them to go over the menu, they expressed a wish for mac and cheese. I did not have the heart to tell them that the only mac and cheese I had ever made was Wacky Mac (kosher from a box!). So I googled “kosher mac and cheese for a crowd”, and I chose one that sounded good. It was a big hit with them, and I was so happy I could add to their special day.

MIRIAM’S MAC AND CHEESE

INGREDIENTS

This recipe makes enough for two 13 x 5 pans!

Melt butter in a large pot Cook onions in butter until soft Mix flour with salt, mustard and ginger Add flour and cook- stirring until bubbly Add milk- whisking continuously until thickened (this will take a while) Remove pot from heat and add Worcestershire sauce and cheese Stir until cheese is melted Mix in macaroni Pour into two buttered pans Bake at 400 F for 20 minutes uncovered, then 15-20 minutes covered Topping: (not in original recipe) I make seasoned croutons and then crush them and spread on top before baking.

2 lbs sharp cheddar cheese 2 lbs cooked elbow macaroni ¾ lb butter 1 cup flour 2 tsps Worcestershire sauce ¼ cup minced onion 2 tsps powdered ginger 1 tsp salt
