Student discount

Going out with friends is a luxury for a student, so it’s best to watch what you buy. For campuses that are located in and around busy retail areas, lots of businesses will offer student discounts. Before purchasing anything, you should always ask if the establishment offers a discount for students. This also applies for students who are attending school as a veteran or under a VA (veteran affairs) program.

Search for cheap foodie deals

Lots of bars and restaurants have daily or weekly specials that range from affordable deals like $1 burger night(s), to half off drinks, happy hour, and so on. These deals are a great excuse to round up your friends at the weekend or after class to have a good time.

Work while studying

Working while going to school can be beneficial—depending on the individual. This is a great opportunity for someone who eats out a lot or likes to buy the trendiest clothing to save money. Plenty of clothing stores, restaurants and movie theaters offer discounts to their employees and should be used accordingly.

One of the most important and efficient ways to save money in college is to cook your own meals. It’s something anyone can do and anyone can learn. Not every grocery store is the same. Price match a few in your area and see what’s best for you. Two grocery trips a month should be enough. Slowing down, looking at everything on the shelves, using coupons and paying attention to the store’s current deals and promotions will help you save money.

Buying used or sharing materials is nothing to be ashamed of. Every school has a campus book store or library but there are even more options online. Catherine Campo, a contributor at CNBC suggests comparing prices on sites like Amazon, Barnes and Noble and Chegg. This is something you can do every year. These sites also offer electronic rental versions of the books you’re looking for and those are even cheaper than used hard copy rentals. On the other hand, hard copy books are great in that once they have been bought and used, there are specific sites you can use to sell your books to other students in need.

Stay at home

This next step is so simple, but many fail to execute it due to falling for the temptation of hanging out with friends—but just stay home. It’s great to socialize or take advantage of deals and special offers, but staying in is free! Hosting a night in is always better for your bank account.

he numbers above show how many people have died from mass shootings in that month so far this year. The number of people wounded from those mass shootings is even higher, with 104 in January, 69 in February, 76 in March, and 50 so far in April at the time of writing. One of the mass shootings that occurred in February was at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. 17 people, mostly students, died as a result of the shooting. Soulless shooter Nikolas Cruz has offered for any and all inheritance money to be donated to the families of the victims and has stated to his defense team that he’s willing to plead guilty in exchange for life in prison, but Assistant State Attorney Shari Tate told the court that “[t] he state of Florida is not allowing Mr. Cruz to choose his own punishment,” and prosecutors will be seeking the death penalty, regardless. The emotional toll that the Parkland

shooting has had on both the victim’s families and those that have survived can be felt across the nation. Student survivors like Emma Gonzalez, Lauren Hogg, Samantha Fuentes and David Hogg have all shared emotional statements about the shooting. They described how the attack not only caused trauma, but inspired them to speak out and make the longoverdue point that enough is enough.

Political change But will the aftermath of the Parkland shooting actually cause nationwide and political change on gun control? Considering the fact that the Sandy Hook elementary school shooting in 2012, where 20 students between the ages of six and seven died, did not enact any federal government action, it seems unlikely that any change will occur now. Much of Congress has responded in the same way they’ve always responded to the nation’s mass shootings:

a back and forth game of taking “a moment of silence for the victims,” and sending out “thoughts and prayers,” with a few members feverishly speaking up, saying that gun-control action needs to be taken now. The debate often leads to the topic of mental illness, which is ironic considering the fact that President Trump signed a bill that repealed an Obamaera regulation that restricted people with severe mental trauma from purchasing guns put forth after Sandy Hook. The nation also only spends about five percent of its budget on mental healthcare while members of Congress continue to accept donations from the National Rifle Association to increase NRA support, but ultimately leads to nothing being accomplished or changed.

Buying guns Frankly, the current gun laws in place are laughable when compared to other countries.

Even though the process of obtaining a gun in the US varies state by state, on a national level, the only step needed to purchase a gun is to pass a background check—which isn’t even the case if purchased from a private seller. These private purchases are unsurprisingly more common in states with fewer gun restrictions, where 57 percent of gun owners purchased their guns without a background check. In addition, the US allows people to purchase automatic and semiautomatic rifles along with handguns with little-to-no restrictions, whereas countries such as Germany, Britain and Australia either prohibit or allow certain gun purchases with strict restrictions. Unsurprisingly, the US has the highest firearm death rate of 10.2 per 100,000 people, according to theatlas. com, while Germany, Australia and Britain have some of the lowest, with 1.1, 1, and 0.2 respectively. In a nation where citizens own nearly half of all guns globally and own more guns per 100 people, it’s no surprise that the US also holds 31 percent of mass shooters globally, despite having less than five percent of the global population.

Mental Health

Racism

While the way mental health is both viewed and addressed in the US certainly needs to be discussed and improved on, to say that mental illness is the only connection to mass shooters is simply untrue. In fact, most of the commonly linked traits between mass shooters between 2015-2017 are strangling, stalking and inciting death threats towards their families or intimate partners. In over 60 percent of those cases, the shooter either killed someone close to them or had a history of domestic violence. Additionally, villainizing everyone with mental health problems only further stigmatizes those that wish and need to seek help. One academic study concluded that “... the large majority of people with mental disorders do not engage in violence against others, and that most violent behavior is due to factors other than mental illness[.]” In fact, gun-related suicides are eight times higher in the US than in any other high-income nation. Couple this along with the fact that there’s an extreme shortage of mental health professionals, thus leading to limited access to treatment, and an estimated 512,000 decrease of state psychiatric beds from 1955 to 2016, it’s quite hypocritical of the US to say that mental health is a problem, yet continue to do nothing to improve its current state. Gun violence is not only an issue that occurs during mass shootings. It’s an issue within the nation’s police department as well. In 2017, police officers killed 1,147 people, whereas mass shooters killed 590 people that same year. Out of those 1,147 people murdered by police, 640 people had either a non-violent offense or committed no crime at all, yet only one percent of officers that committed the shootings were charged.

It’s also important to note that, while it’s not always the case, racism and police shootings do correlate. According to a study done by Michael Siegal and his research group, “structural racism does positively correlate with higher levels of police killings of African Americans. For every 10-point increase in the state racism index there’s a corresponding 24 percent increase in the ratio of unarmed black people killed by police compared to white people killed in same conditions.” Despite white people making up over half of America’s population, unarmed black people are still five times more likely than unarmed white people to be killed by police. Brave 11-year old Naomi Wadler took to the stage during Washington’s March for Our Lives, a campaign started by Parkland shooting survivors to demonstrate their support for more gun control, to make this point known. Specifically, when it comes to the murders of black women, who are killed in numbers that are incomparable to the Parkland shooting. “I am here today to acknowledge and represent the African American girls whose stories don’t make the front page of every national newspaper, whose stories don’t lead the evening news,” stated Wadler. “I urge everyone here and everyone who hears my voice to join me in telling the stories that aren’t told. To honor the girls, the women of color who are murdered at disproportionate rates in this nation. I urge each of you to help me write the narrative for this world and understand, so that these girls and women are never forgotten.” Enough should’ve been enough a long time ago. cn

WHAT DO THEY KNOW? First, we provide the lowdown on the information Google and Facebook store on you. (Be warned, this might freak you out.)

YOUR MOVEMENTS Google stores your location every time you switch on your cell phone. It’s been tracking where you’ve been from the very first day you started using Google Maps—it knows the time of day you were in a given location and how long it took you to travel there.

EVERYTHING YOU’VE EVER SEARCHED—& DELETED It doesn’t matter if you delete your search

or phone history on one device, Google may have stored data from other devices. This helps form your “digital footprint”—which targeted digital advertising campaigns can exploit. Google also stores information on every app and extension you use. It knows how often you use them and who you use them to interact with.

DATA ON ALL ASPECTS OF YOUR “DIGITAL LIFE” Google has data on everything from the phones you’ve owned to how many steps you walk in a day. If you download all the data Google stores on you, you’ll find it includes bookmarks, emails, contacts, Google Drive files; photos you’ve taken on your phone and the products you’ve bought through Google. Google also has data on the music you listen to, your calendar, the websites you’ve created, the Google books you’ve purchased, the phones you’ve owned, and the pages you’ve shared. Even files you’ve deleted are stored by Google. To see your own data, go to google.com/ takeout.

FACEBOOK HAS STACKS OF DATA ON YOU, TOO If you were to download all of your personal data from Facebook, you’d find it contained every message you’d ever sent or been sent;

every file you’d ever sent or been sent; all the contacts in your phone; and all the audio messages you’d ever sent or been sent.

FACEBOOK CAN ACCESS YOUR WEBCAM & MICROPHONE When you agree to Facebook’s terms of use, you (perhaps unwittingly) allow the social network to access your webcam, microphone and camera. Facebook’s founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg is even known to tape over his own laptop webcam and microphone. And, when asked in 2016 if he covered his laptop’s webcam, former FBI director James Comey said: “Heck yeah, heck yeah; I put a piece of tape over the camera because I saw somebody smarter than I am had a piece of tape over their camera.” If you are concerned, American digital rights group EFF sells webcam stickers, which it says people “purchase regularly”.

OK, THEY HAVE THIS DATA—SO WHAT? Most people are probably aware when they sign up for a free service like Facebook—or benefit from the wealth of information free search engines provide—there must be a catch somewhere. After all, these companies are there to make money. Their fundamental business model, which revolves around advertising, requires retention of

t is almost 70 years since George Orwell’s prescient words, “Big Brother is watching you,” were first published in Nineteen Eighty-four (1949). In 2018, with our personal data so freely available, this fictitious maxim seems more relevant than ever. Forget the Soviet Union, the Gestapo or the Spanish Inquisition. Google and Facebook know more about us than any state-sponsored organization in history. Unconstrained by borders—unaccountable to many governments—the tech conglomerates seem almost untouchable. But how sinister is the recent dataharvesting furore? College News investigates.

vast amounts of customer data. The crux of the issue lays in whether we are aware the extent to which our data is being harvested. And whether we give meaningful consent for its use. To understand this, we must make the critical distinction between information we willingly share and information Facebook or Google take without our knowledge. Put another way, are users of Facebook or Google aware of the stakes involved when signing up to use these services?

DIGITIZING DEMOCRACY In many ways, tech companies like Google and Facebook have democratized information. In the spirit of idealism upon which they were founded, these companies provide an abundance of knowledge and unparalleled connectivity at the touch of a button. With this in mind, does the fact they hold so much data on us really matter?

When it comes to constitutional issues of democracy, it does. Of that, the recent Cambridge Analytica scandal was proof. The data mining, brokerage and analysis company accrued the personal data of 87 million Facebook users, some of which purportedly influenced the outcome of the 2016 Presidential election. When data influences politics, something’s got to give. And in April 2018, it did. Following bipartisan consensus, Mark Zuckerberg was invited to testify in Congress in an almost unprecedented event. At last, it seems the tech giant is assuming responsibility and is prepared to take steps to protect its users’ privacy. Still, it’s unlikely Facebook can impede the threat our nation faces of election meddling and cyber warfare from our enemies to the east. Orwell’s was a world of dystopian proportions—perhaps ours isn’t so different. cn

If you want to live a Facebook-free life, it is important to understand the difference between “deletion” and “deactivation.” Deactivating your account means some of your data will still be visible (like messages you’ve sent) and Facebook will store all of your account information in case you reactivate. Permanently deleting your Facebook account will, after a 90-day grace period, remove things you’ve posted like statuses, photos and other data stored in backup systems. While they are deleting this information, Facebook says, “It is inaccessible to other people using Facebook.” They add: “Keep in mind that you will not be able to reactivate your account or retrieve any of the content or information you have added.” But even then, copies of some materials (like log records) may remain in Facebook’s database, but are “disassociated from personal identifiers,” according to the company.

GOOGLE

Google knows a lot about us. For many, this is just a fact of life. But, with the right know-how, it’s possible to control what it uses for advertising purposes. Google stores all your search history. If you’d rather not have a list of (potentially embarrassing) search queries stored up, head to Google’s history page, click Menu (the three vertical dots) and then hit Advanced -&gt; All Time -&gt; Delete. As we mentioned, Google has the (slightly creepy) habit of keeping tabs on your location. To disable this, when you visit the timeline page you can hit the settings cog in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen and select delete all from there.

GO ‘OFF-GRID’—FOR GOOD

If you’ve ever wanted to remove yourself (almost) entirely from the internet, Swedish website Deseat.me uses your Google account to help. To go ‘off-grid’, visit Deseat.me and input your Gmail address. It will bring up all the online accounts linked to that address and give you the option to delete them all.

Thunder Hole—coined so because of the thundering waves that crash against the rocks there. For the best views, opt for the path that runs closer to the shoreline. Take a break from beach lounging and embark on a refreshing hike along the Nap Pali coast of Kauai. The Kalalau trail is the only land access to this scenic strip of coastline, which crosses over soaring cliffs and traverses through five valleys. With 180-degree views of navy Pacific waters to keep visitors entranced, it’s no wonder that this area attracts a diverse crowd. Summer vacation is only as fun as it is safe. Keep these tips in mind when traveling

BEFORE ARRIVING AT YOUR DESTINATION Before heading out on that trip you’ve been planning for months, don’t forget to pack all of your important documents like passports or IDs in a waterproof container (especially if you’re headed to those crystal-clear beaches in Cancun!) or somewhere they won’t get lost or left behind. Do some research before you book the “cheaper” hotel, too. Read the reviews online and ask around about

the area where the hotel is located before making a decision. Before leaving home for your trip, notify your bank that you will be vacationing in another state or country. Save yourself the anguish of trying to make a purchase while abroad before realizing the bank froze your debit card due to “fraud”. ARRIVING AT YOUR DESTINATION When you travel somewhere unknown, stay together with the people you are traveling with. Getting lost is way easier than it sounds, even with our modern GPS in hand. The number of times a phone dies exactly when you most need it is astounding. While you may be itching to explore your holiday spot’s nightlife, remember: You’re in a strange, unfamiliar place, so think twice before hopping into whatever taxi appears first. Tourists tend to stick out to natives, making you an easy target for theft. Only use well-known transportation methods like Uber or Lyft. These companies perform background checks on their drivers, making them a safer option. If you are traveling in your own vehicle, make sure to complete a full inspection on the car before heading to your vacation destination. There’s

nothing worse than getting a flat tire 200 miles from home and realizing you don’t have a spare. WHILE OUT & ABOUT Nothing goes better together than drinks and fun while on vacation. Remember to watch those drinks like you would during any other outing with friends. Don’t accept drinks from strangers if they’re open or if you didn’t watch them pour it. If you’re in a sunny climate, don’t pass on the sunscreen. Those UV rays are hitting you hard even though you’re having too much fun to feel it. If, on the other hand, you traveled to those beautiful mountains in Switzerland, remember to keep Chapstick and lotion handy so your skin doesn’t dry up from the cold. Watch out for pickpockets in big cities by keeping your phone and wallet in your front pockets. With the old habit of putting your phone in your back pocket, you may think someone is squeezing past you, but in reality, they might be taking your phone or cash. Fresh Spring Rolls with Japanese Dipping Sauce SERVES 2 These light spring rolls are inspired by the Vietnamese version but have been invigorated with a Japanese twist. Enjoy as a side or a starter for a delectable summertime treat.

INGREDIENTS

FOR THE SAUCE

5-6 shelled prawns 8 green beans, trimmed and sliced 4 rice paper wrappers ½ bunch chives ½ bunch cilantro 2 spring onions, thinly sliced Salt and pepper, to taste

1 tsp miso paste ½ tsp chilli paste 1 tbsp mayonnaise 1 tsp soy sauce

METHOD

1. Bring a saucepan of lightly salted water to the boil. Add prawns and cook for 2-3 minutes or until bright pink. 2. In the same pan, blanch the green beans for 3-4 minutes. Remove both when done and set aside. Slice the prawns if you wish. 3. Meanwhile, prepare the rice paper sheets according to their instructions. This may involve soaking them for a few seconds. Lay the rice wrappers on a clean cloth and arrange the chives, cilantro leaves, spring onion, green beans and prawns upon them. 4. Sprinkle with a little salt and pepper then fold into a neat parcel by tucking in the ends and rolling the sheet up. 5. For the dipping sauce, mix all of the ingredients in a small ramekin.

Crispy squid is the ultimate relaxed evening snack. These battered rings are quick and easy to make; enjoy on a sunny porch with a beer and good company.

METHOD 1. Add flour to a bowl and season with salt and pepper. Thoroughly mix

in the chopped capers. 2. Drop the ½ cm-thick squid rings into the flour and coat. Pour

When the oil is hot—test that a piece of bread sizzles and floats— carefully add the squid rings one at a time. Cook for 3 minutes or until golden and crisp. 4. Remove with a slotted spoon and place on kitchen paper—top with sea salt. 5. For the dip, mix together all of the ingredients in a small bowl. Serve the squid straight away with lemon wedges.

Comedian, musician, actor and writer Bo Burnham talks with College News about the upcoming release of his directorial debut Eighth Grade, anxiety and life as a comedian BY KAYLEY LOVERIDGE

COLLEGE NEWS: Let’s talk about your directorial debut, Eighth Grade. What has the response been so far? BO BURNHAM: The response has been really lovely so far. We’ve only shown it at a few festivals, but it feels like it’s connecting with people which is very, very nice and relieving.

CN: Eighth Grade centers around shy 13-yearold Kayla. You have spoken often about the character being the vessel with which to voice your own thoughts and feelings on the world. Were there any challenges you faced when it came to writing her character and how did your initial character ideas evolve as you wrote the film? BB: The challenge was always trying to capture this voice authentically. My disconnect from her was two-fold: I was never a 13 year-old girl, and I was never 13 years old right now. And I knew both of those things lent themselves to a specific experience that I couldn’t fully understand. And the answer was just to research—and Generation Z is very easy to research. They post literally everything about themselves in real time online. As far as the ideas evolving, it all evolved once Elsie Fisher [actress who plays Kayla in Eighth Grade] got involved—I told her every day that I wanted this movie to come to her and not the other way around. Once real kids got involved I deferred to them for the sort of nuts and bolts “truth” of the thing.

explore it. I think the internet makes eighth graders out of us all. CN: There is a pivotal, sexually awkward scene during the film that sees Kayla apologize to older character Riley for not being intimate with him. Was this scene written with the current political/social climate and #MeToo movement that’s currently engulfing Hollywood in mind? BB: Definitely not. This was written two years ago and shot last summer—but I’m happy that people see that scene as in alignment with the values and concerns of the #MeToo movement—as I think it’s a vital and insanely overdue public conversation. And we still have a long way to go, especially with young people, in educating them on consent and sexual behavior.

CN: When conceptualizing and writing the screenplay for Eighth Grade, what themes and topics were you keen on portraying through the characters and the plot? BB: I wanted to talk about the internet and about anxiety. I have struggled with anxiety a lot in my life and have felt that my anxiety has deep ties to the internet in some way. And this story felt like the best way to

CN: A common reaction that comedians and comediennes receive is backlash and criticism for using un-PC language or satirising socially sensitive topics. Has there been a particularly standout moment where this has happened to you? How do you deal with that kind of backlash personally? BB: Oh, sure I’ve dealt with backlash for things I said, especially when I was younger, 17 or 18 years old just trying to say the most offensive things because that’s what I thought comedy was. I tend to only look back on that stuff cringing at myself, not at the people objecting to it. I feel like comedians get to express themselves all the time, so they shouldn’t start complaining when the audience wants to express back. CN: Can you tell our readers about how you got your break in the industry and how your career evolved into the realm of film and television? BB: [I] started posting videos on YouTube and those sort of took off. And then it was just a sort of long, weird journey of performing stand up everywhere and quietly writing scripts in my free time. And then when it felt like I had gotten

enough momentum in the comedy world to justify getting a small budget for a movie, I dropped stand up and started working on this movie. And here we are! And death next, I think!

you give to budding young comedians, actors and writers that you wish you had been given yourself when you were starting out? BB: I would say relax and enjoy it. I do believe that the best part of the creative process is available to everyone—just doing it. Just starting the process of picturing things and making things and seeing how they turn out and editing and making yourself better. Just start and jump in and don’t worry if you suck out the gate. This is what I try to remind myself of all the time. Just focus on what you can control which is your work and your ability to get better by your own standards. Just do the work and enjoy it. The whole reason to do creative things is to be able to do something interesting and enjoyable and the interest and enjoyment is available right away!

CN: Writing is very much central to your career having written for your own comedy performances, television shows and now film. Can you tell us a little bit about the writing process for you? How do your ideas emerge and manifest into full-rounded projects? BB: Honestly, they are often not fullrounded until the very end—if they get there at all! The initial point for me, usually, is just reading books or watching movies and just getting excited about things I like. And then trying to daydream and find any sort of ledge I can grab onto to start climbing towards something. My ideas usually start very specifically with an image or a scene or a moment—not with a theme or some big sweeping idea. I like to start from a moment or image that I really love and then work outward. Because it’s really the moments that I’m going to be working on, and it’s the moments that people will experience, so if a moment can’t work out the gate, it feels [like it’s] not worth the time. That may make no sense.

CN: Do you have any new and exciting projects on the horizon for 2018 and early 2019 that our readers should keep an eye out for? BB: Just Eighth Grade. Hopefully in the next few months I’ll bang my head against a wall and something will fall out. But I’m only seeing tumbleweeds at the moment. Help! cn

JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM (JUNE 22) Dinosaur fans, rejoice! The second in the Jurassic World franchise, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, will hit theaters come June 22. This time around, the story follows Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) and Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard) on a mission to rescue dinosaurs from Isla Nublar under the false impression that they will be saved from extinction. It’s not until later on that they learn that scientists want to genetically mutate these rare creatures in order to turn them into living weapons.

HEREDITARY (JUNE 8) Set to be the scariest film of the year, Hereditary first debuted at Sundance festival in January of this year and has received major critical acclaim at advanced screenings ever since. a stir in the movie scene, this highly anticipated film is a wonderfully frank look at the life, anxieties and worries of a 13-year-old in the internet age.

CRAZY RICH ASIANS (AUGUST 17) Based on a novel of the same name by Kevin Kwan, Crazy Rich Asians follows economics professor Rachel Chu as she accompanies her partner to Singapore to attend his best friend’s wedding. It is not until she lands in Singapore that she discovers her boyfriend comes from an extremely wealthy family and she is unwittingly thrust into the world of Asia’s rich and finest. This romance film will be released in America August 17. cn

he relationship between high-end luxury fashion brands and animal ethics groups has been fraught for decades. However, recent years have seen a rise in major fashion houses and designers denouncing the use of animal fur, marking a monumental victory for animal rights. Some American cities are also taking an independent stand to diminish the retail of the product. San Francisco voted to ban all sales of fur within its limits in March of this year. An historical moment for the city, this new legislation will go into effect January 2019.

A WORLDWIDE STAND There is no doubt that fur as clothing is drenched in the glitz of showbiz history. Adorning Hollywood starlets and wealthy clientele alike, female glamour was once defined by a mink coat. If recent years are anything to go by, however, this antiquated approach to style is getting the overhaul animals deserve, and its effects can be seen around the globe. Norway, which was once the world’s largest producer of fox fur, has committed to phasing out the country’s fur farms by 2025. The Nordic country follows in the footsteps of the UK, Germany, Austria and Croatia, who have all prohibited fur farms. What’s more, according to the Financial Times, 850 retailers globally are now registered as Fur Free Retailers.

HIGH TIME, HIGH FASHION The Versace family’s eponymous brand joined the ever-growing list of fashion houses to eradicate fur products from its lines. Head of the family Donatella Versace said earlier this year, “Fur? I am out of that. I don’t want to kill animals to make fashion. It doesn’t feel right.” We’re with you there, Donatella. Major Italian fashion house Gucci announced its move to eliminate fur from its label back in 2017 from its Spring 2018 line onwards. Any remaining fur stock, they said, would be auctioned

with proceeds given to animal welfare charities. “Being socially responsible is one of Gucci’s core values, and we will continue to strive to do better for the environment and animals,” said Gucci president and CEO Marco Bizzarri at the London College of Fashion in October 2017. “Gucci is excited to take this next step and hopes it will help inspire innovation and raise awareness, changing the luxury fashion industry for the better,” he added. According to the Financial Times, fur products in Gucci’s line account for just €10 million of their €6.21 billion worth. A change in consumer behavior also prompted the fashion titan to change course. With the rise of vegetarianism and veganism among millennials (the brand’s main consumer base), sales for animal products were likely to decrease anyway. Not long ago, accessible luxury fashion brand Michael Kors also hopped onto the faux fur bandwagon. “Due to technological advances in fabrications, we now have the ability to create a luxe aesthetic using non-animal fur,” said Kors himself, following a statement that the company would join others in cutting the use of animal fur from its brand. John D. Idol, chairman and chief executive at Michael Kors, said in a statement, “This decision marks a new chapter as our company continues to evolve its use of innovative materials.”

IS THE FUTURE FAUX? The concept of replacing animal fur with fake fur has been met with mixed reactions. While it undoubtedly eliminates the possibility of animal slaughter, some have argued that the material’s production is harmful to the environment and not as sustainable as we’d like to think. The principal materials used to make faux fur— including acrylic and polyesters—are made from non-renewable products such as coal and petroleum which deplete the Earth’s natural resources. Mark Oaten, CEO of the Fur Trade Association, said, “Fake fur requires the extraction and fractionating of petroleum, as well as the subsequent conversion into fibers and mass manufacturing into products. are not only incredibly energy-intensive but also produce a lot of extremely unpleasant chemical compounds.” But is this argument against faux alternatives enough to slow the momentum gained to banish animal fur and encourage furaesthetic lovers to buy real? While commitments to a fur-free future have made a powerful political statement, fur farming is still a major cash cow with the global fur industry estimated to be worth a staggering $40 billion. For now, though, the formidable solidarity between fashion houses renowned for their lavish excess, independent boutiques and countries around the world who are stepping into a cruelty-free future together shows that compassionate fashion is—for want of a better word—“in”. cn

Day wear PRETTY PASTELS

Whether lilac, lemon, dusky pink or duck egg is your shade of choice, it’s official that pastels are back in all their glory. Catalyzed by runway illustrations from Victoria Beckham, Preen and Valentino, muted feminine hues are now filtering into the high street—much to the delight of fashion enthusiasts. Although these shades are pretty, saccharine they are not. Pastels are ideal for evoking a casual day-look; hunt down a millennial pink watch, lilac jacket, mint green bag or soft blue shoes that will give your outfit a current edge.

ON THE FRINGE

Fringed clothes and accessories are making a comeback this season, injecting some fun and whimsy back into our ensembles. We are going to be seeing more fringe than you can shake a stick at—mostly as an embellishment for jackets, bags or even loafers. While traditional fringing is usually reserved for leather garments, this style technique will branch into other materials such as linen, wool and synthetic blends.

STRAIGHT-LEGGED JEANS

If you add anything new to your wardrobe this season, make it straight-legged jeans. They are classic, versatile and very flattering. Unlike skinny jeans that hug every lump and bump, straight-legged jeans nicely skim over “trouble areas” and help to elongate the appearance of the leg. Like any jeans, these can be dressed up or down; pair with a flowing cami top during the day or switch for a slinky halter neck in the evening.

STAY IN CHECK

It looks as though heritage checks are going nowhere this season, as demonstrated by Balenciaga’s recent catwalk display. They make for a fantastic casual print on both dresses, shorts and skirts—all of which emanate a summery appeal. At present, checked items are available in understated or eye-catching designs. Try layering a checked playsuit with a denim jacket, leather sandals and a broad sunhat.
