BACHELOR OF ARTS IN

USER EXPERIENCE AND GAME DESIGN The field of interactive design has moved from an era where designers were self-taught and learned on the job, to one where even entry-level designers are expected to have proven design skills, knowledge of technology, information processing, and psychology. Interactive designers must continually place themselves in the minds of their users and players. They shape every action and response, carefully teaching users what they need to know while skillfully blending the interactive, spatial, narrative, visual, and aural aspects of an experience. Students will learn the behavior and psychology behind the design application in games, software development, user experience, and VR and AR. This degree program prepares students to be interactive designers who are able to create any kind of interactive experience. Throughout the program, students spend a significant amount of time conducting extensive research, evaluation, and user-based testing, creating wireframe documents to visualize ideas, and finally rapidly prototyping and iterating to bring these designs to life. They may even be required to work on physical installations at times. They are capable of working in large teams, communicating and collaborating with other designers, artists, and engineers.

digipen.edu.sg/academics/art-and-design-degrees 46 | Undergraduate Degree Programs

The act of design, of crafting experiences for other people, is fundamental to almost all human interactions. Our goal is creating powerful, lasting experiences for the player. Design students learn how to really understand and craft these interactions and experiences. Everything works in concert to deliver the memorable experiences that bring players back for more. The audio, visuals, pacing, and feedback are integrated into the design, and when properly implemented, much of the design process is invisible.” Jeremy Holcomb Program Director DigiPen Institute of Technology Singapore | 47

LEARNING OUTCOMES Graduates will be well-versed in both interactive design and game design theory. This includes user interface and user experience design, usability, spatial design, system design, and behavior design. Through the completion of both individual and team projects, they will gain extensive experience in testing, iterating, and polishing original project ideas including games, training simulations, UI/UX prototypes, and design and wireframing documentation. Graduates will be familiar with the basics of psychology, programming, art, and writing. They will also have been introduced to concepts of sound design, statistics, and probability. Graduates will be awarded with honors if they attained a cumulative GPA of ≥3.0 by the end of the program.

BACHELOR OF FINE ARTS IN

DIGITAL ART AND ANIMATION The BFA in Digital Art and Animation degree program adopts a broad-based learning approach to prepare artists for a career in the digital media and entertainment industry. Artists are groomed to adapt in the rapidly changing world of the digital media and entertainment industries through a strong foundation in fine arts, animation, film, and digital arts. Throughout the program, artists’ artistic sensibilities and creativity are nurtured as they master the tools and skill sets relevant to the entertainment industry. They will be conditioned in a stimulating environment that fosters creative problem solving, professionalism, and teamwork. This will position them at the forefront of the industry upon graduation. It’s a popular misconception that great artists are born with innate talent. DigiPen’s BFA program has proven again and again that ‘talent’ is born out of focus and discipline, process and iteration, passion and sacrifice. There is no easy path to success in the applied arts, where one must be creative on demand and often under stringent deadlines. To prepare students for the realities of this industry, we challenge them to think critically, inspire them to innovate, and above all, demand that they execute.”
