Women Sports in

Breaking Barriers and ACHIEVING EQUALITY

Sports have always been a significant part of human history, but the role of women in sports has been a long and challenging journey. Despite the progress made so far, the challenges faced by female athletes and professionals in the sports industry remain rampant. From unequal pay to discrimination and sexism, women in sports have had to fight for their place in the spotlight.

This article will explore the evolution of women in sports, the challenges they still face today, and the ways in which we can break down barriers to achieve gender equality in sports. We even tried to get some one on one insights through our conversation with Ms. Mariyam Khan, a tennis player, who has represented India internationally.

12 WWW.WMHINDIA.COM

Early History of Women in Sports

The early history of women in sports is often associated with the Victorian era and the notion of proper decorum for ladies. Women were largely excluded from participating in organized sports until the late 19th century. While there are records of women playing field hockey and cricket in England as early as the 18th century, it wasn't until after the first wave of feminism that women began to participate in competitive sports on a more regular basis.

In 1887, the first Women's World Games were held in London, organized by feminist activist Emily Pankhurst. The event featured five events: archery, lawn tennis, croquet, fencing, and Irish dancing. While this event was a step forward for female athletes, it would take nearly 50 years before women were allowed to compete in the Olympic Games.

Today, there are professional leagues for nearly every sport imaginable, and

female athlete are competing at the highest levels of their respective fields. While there is still considerable room for continued improvement in terms of equality and opportunity, the landscape of women's sports has changed dramatically over the last century.

13 WMH INDIA MAGAZINE-JULY-2023

The

Challenges Female Athletes Face Today

In conversation with Mariyam she mentioned about how being a muslim women she faced unique challenges when it came to participating in sports, stemming from cultural, religious, and societal factors. One of the primary obstacles she encountered is the clash between modesty requirements and traditional athletic attire. Many sports outfits, such as shorts or sleeveless tops,

may not align with the modest dress code. Some of the societal critics that she faced were related to how her body will change, how these injuries would make it difficult for her to get married, her family was supportive but these norms affect people subconsciously. Fighting all her athletic demons that came her way she rose to be the best of the best and we couldn't be more proud of her.

Concerns regarding gender segregation, the lack of female-only sports facilities, and limited access to coaching and

14 WWW.WMHINDIA.COM

training opportunities further impede the active participation. Even with these prevailing challenges, women are breaking barriers and forging new paths, advocating for inclusivity and paving the way for greater representation in the world of sports.

Despite advances in equality, women still face many obstacles when it comes to participation in sports. One of the biggest challenges is the lack of funding and support for women's sports. Although laws like Title IX have been introduced to provide equal funding for men's and women's sports programs at schools, this has not always been the case.

The Importance of Advocating for Gender Equity in Sports

The importance of advocating for gender equity in sports should not be overlooked. By supporting women's sports, we can create an environment where people from all backgrounds and identities feel welcome and empowered to pursue their dreams on any playing field, track, or court.

In fact, studies have shown that women's sports still receive less attention and funding than men's sports. This is especially true at the professional level where women athletes often earn significantly less than their male counterparts.

In some sports, such as basketball and soccer, women's teams receive far less media coverage than men's teams. This can lead to a lack of visibility for female athletes, which can make it difficult to attract sponsorships and grow their fan base.

15 WMH INDIA MAGAZINE-JULY-2023

One way to promote gender equity in sports is through education. When researching schools, look for unique courses and opportunities for work experience that cater to women in sports. This can help you gain valuable skills and experience that will help you launch your career in sports.

Internships are also an excellent way to explore potential sports jobs and learn from industry professionals. Networking is key in the sports industry, and your peers are a great first connection. Attend conferences, join clubs, and participate in community events to meet other women in sports.

In addition to technical skills, soft skills like professionalism, hard work, and positivity can propel your sports career. Be open to learning and growing, and don't be afraid to ask for help or guidance from mentors or colleagues.

Conclusion

Women's sports have come a long way in the past century, and it is exciting to watch female athletes continue to break barriers. However, there are still many challenges that these athletes face when it comes to equality with their male counterparts. Breaking down these barriers requires a collective effort from all of us, and it starts with educating ourselves and advocating for gender equity in sports. With more opportunities and more support, female athletes will only continue to thrive in the years to come.

WMH India's core mission and its significant accomplishments

The overarching aspiration of WMH India, as expressed by your very own WMH co-founders Reggie and I, Sitanshu. Our aim is to make a positive impact. We have always been an ardent proponent of assisting others to the best of their abilities and to push their boundaries. Our commitment of giving back to the world has not only brought

them personal contentment but has also been a key driver in the establishment of WMH India.

The organization was created with the intent of championing the modeling industry and aiding individuals within the talent, entertainment, and sports sectors, to help them exceed their current potential. The storytelling aspect of this mission is facilitated through their role as a media publication company.

A testament to our dedication to our cause, WMH India has successfully published features on more than 200 models over a span of just 2.5 years. The

29 WMH INDIA MAGAZINE-JULY-2023

aim is to narrate the genuine stories of individuals, fostering understanding about key principles such as diversity, inclusivity, and sustainability, as well as the importance of giving back.

Rationale Behind the Inception of WMH India and its Evolving Mission

The decision to launch an Indian division of World Model Hunt was primarily influenced by the significant demographic influence of India on a global scale, representing roughly a fifth of the world's population. The immense pool of talent and audience present in the country offers a thriving market for various businesses, which is why many of them strive to establish a presence in India.

While WMH India's initial objective was solely to discover and foster exceptional talent, the mission evolved over time, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic. It was during this period that we recognized the scope should extend beyond just the modeling and fashion industry.

30 WWW.WMHINDIA.COM

The revised goal was also to provide support to those involved in sports, specifically those that are less acknowledged and fall outside the cricket arena. This led to the introduction of the STEM initiative, an acronym for Sports Talents Events Management, illustrating our dedication to a more expansive and inclusive approach.

Future

Objectives of WMH India for the Next 2.5 Years

WMH India, as a startup in its nascent stages, is still navigating the beta phase of its operations. However, in the forthcoming 2.5 years, we envision ourselves gaining prominence in the media and entertainment industry.

The ambitions are straightforward, yet profoundly impactful. We aim to forge fresh connections, furnish more opportunities, and continue our quest for discovering untapped talent across the country. The objectives reflect our unwavering dedication to facilitating growth within the media, entertainment, and sports sectors in India.

The Influence of a Predominantly Female Team on WMH India's Success

At WMH India, we pride ourselves on the fact that our operations have largely been managed by women for quite some time. This extends beyond just the content team, to include executives and interns as well. In our view, the success we have achieved to date is a tribute to their diligent efforts.

31 WMH INDIA MAGAZINE-JULY-2023

Both Reggie and I extend our gratitude to Leslie C, Laura Johanson, Emily P, Jenny, Shiwangi Srivastav, Ashi Chaudhary, Anjali, Priyanka Mohanty, Rebecca Lal, Kashish Sachdeva, among many others. While it's impossible to mention everyone, we fully acknowledge and appreciate the contributions made by every team member, irrespective of their gender. Our female team members have fortified our organization, infusing diversity, enhancing understanding, and promoting openness to various life perspectives. While empowering women has become a pressing need of the hour, it's crucial to remember that our hiring policies do not discriminate against talented men. Every opportunity within our organization was hard-

earned, with all of our female team members competing on an equal footing with male counterparts to secure these roles. Therefore, the significant presence of women in our team is not a result of bias, but a testament to their deserving competencies.

Understanding the Implementation and Expansion of the STEM System in WMH India

To give some context, the introduction of the STEM system, standing for Sports, Talents, Events, and Management, emerged during the challenging period of the COVID-19 pandemic. In response

32 WWW.WMHINDIA.COM

to the crisis, we decided to postpone our launch by a year to weather the storm and ensure our survival.

With some extra time on our hands, we utilized it effectively to conduct extensive research and gain a deeper understanding of the market dynamics. Through increased online interactions and a collective team effort, we began to evolve our approach to incorporate the STEM system, internally known as STEM India.

Even though we opened our magazine to this new segment, it was not our immediate area of focus. The plan was to gradually increase our involvement in it. Looking ahead, our primary objective will be to expand our horizons and fully integrate our operations with our STEM policy, fostering an even more inclusive environment.

33 WMH INDIA MAGAZINE-JULY-2023

What was once thought to be a day-to-day public journal has evolved into one of the most popular entertainment sources for the general public. "Magazine" which was initially an Arabic word for storage facility has now turned into a typical necessity and pass time for us. As more and more years passed, the magazine industry saw continuous growth. The magazine industry has evolved into a vital source of information for many, covering everything from fashion to cuisine to wildlife, and as this contemporary journal solidifies its hold on the marketing industry, many people are currently drawn to its job line.

CAREER IN THE MAGAZINE INDUSTRY

Careers in Magazine, editor’s review!

The magazine industry offers a wide range of career options because it doesn't belong to a certain sector. In a time when public relations and advertising seem to be essential, magazines play a big part in marketing, and there are many work prospects in this field. The key areas of concentration for work are the editorial, managerial, and support teams.

The management team is responsible for overseeing everything, the supporting team is in charge of supplying the information and concepts for the content that will be published, and the editing team is in charge of producing the content and collaborating on projects that revolve around a particular product. Magazines play a crucial role at a time when nothing is reportedly done without the aid of public relations and advertising, and there is plenty of vacant employment waiting for you in this industry.

34 WWW.WMHINDIA.COM

The publication group, the management group, and the support group are where most jobs are located. The publisher has the top position in a business that publishes magazines, followed by the advertising department, which handles sales and fosters positive relationships with other ad reps. The marketing department collaborates with the advertising department. For the advertisement department, the marketing department devises a plan to draw attention to its goods. Additionally, one consistently lumps public relations and advertising together, even if this is only partially accurate.

35 WMH INDIA MAGAZINE-JULY-2023

The PR department places more emphasis on preserving the company's positive reputation than the advertising department, which is more concerned with increasing product sales. These two departments then further have a couple of sales support directors who help out with merchandising and promotion of the product. It is also believed that in the magazine industry, only a writer can flourish but in reality, there are positions in the finance department and technical department that play an equally important role for the company.

The “not so” permanent roles!

Apart from permanent positions and internships one can also get into this industry through freelancing. Nowadays, working as a freelancer is not a surprising factor, rather, it is a typical practice. Although many writers, photographers, designers, creators, developers and others choose to work independently as freelancers or from home, this may not be the case for all businesses. There are those in this field that encourage independent contractors, but there are others who may require you to operate from an office rather than your home.

When considering someone to hire for a job in their organization, for this particular industry, creativity is regarded as the most crucial factor. The publication has changed from being an e-book to an offline and online magazine, and in this world that is changing quickly, the only way to stand out is to evolve with it. Even if you begin today as an intern, you will be entering an entirely new world from the one you have been living up to this point. When you take on your duty as an intern, you have the chance to grow and utilize your creativity to gain the recognition that your work deserves. From that point on, you learn how to work hard for a better position. You will have the

36 WWW.WMHINDIA.COM

chance to travel across the world and explore different and unique parts of it, by working in the Magazine Industry.

The element of salary

The element of salary follows next. The salary for a given work depends on a number of factors, including your position and the magazine's popularity and circulation. A reputable and well-read magazine will provide you with a greater chance of earning high pay than a regional publication with a smaller readership. According to research, the yearly income of a journalist in India may range from ₹ 3.0 lakhs to ₹ 8.0 lakhs, while the annual

compensation of an editor in India is ₹ 4 lakhs. For each role, whether it is a writer, editor, photographer, manager, ad representative, or another, there are many different pay scales. The pay for an intern who just graduated from college is entirely different from the pay for a regular employee who has been employed by the firm for a longer length of time.

The magazine industry is a wild and wonderful world filled with creativity, ink-stained fingers, and paper cuts that are badges of honour. It's a place where dreamers become storytellers, fashionistas become trendsetters, and words dance off the pages into the hearts of readers. From late-night brainstorming sessions fueled by caffeine and crazy ideas to glamorous photo shoots that blur the line between fantasy and reality, careers in the magazine industry offer a ticket to a rollercoaster ride of inspiration and innovation. So, if you're ready to dive into a world where deadlines are adrenaline rushes and quirky ideas reign supreme, grab your pen, put on your eccentric hat, and join the captivating chaos of the magazine industry. Get ready to leave your mark and create a colou rful collage of imagination and delight for readers around the globe...
