MICHAEL ANASTASSIADES

In 2007, I founded Michael Anastassiades to bring my design ideas to life without compromise and to create timeless pieces through a dedication to refined simplicity and technical perfection, using materials of exceptional quality.

What began as an experiment has evolved naturally into today’s considered brand and many incredible collaborations with like-minded partners.

I remain committed to Michael Anstassiades as the platform for experimentation and the brand that expresses my most personal design visions.

Tosa-Washi Paper, Kiso Cypress Wood. Polished Nickel-Plated Brass.

There is an ancient theory that accounted for lunar phases in a different way than we do today. This theory held that the Moon was in fact flat. One side of the Moon was silvery-white, the other side was black, and it was the orbiting of this half-black, half-white Moon around the Earth that caused the lunar phases.

Blue Skies is a table lamp composed of a silver base and a Kiso wood and Tosa-Washi paper reflector. A projected light beam is shot upwards from the base and is caught by the paper shade positioned at an angle directly above. A reflected, meditative glow on a floating disc, highlighting the texture of the paper’s structure. A simple balancing gesture of capturing light which would have otherwise been lost.

The Onyx Light is carved from a single block of onyx, carefully selected for its transparency and veins. There are about 20 pieces that come out of a single block, with each batch bearing similarities in terms of character and colour. Each Onyx Light series is a unique edition, created when we are lucky enough to find blocks of onyx that carry the necessary qualities.

Ta-ke is a family of floor lamps originated after the exhibition  Cheerfully optimistic about the future , presented at the Fondazione ICA in Milan in September 2021. The idea was to produce a simplified unlimited version of the lights that carries the sophistication and craftsmanship with which the limited edition works were made. The result is an arrangement of beautifully crafted bamboo poles placed on a metal base, creating a structure that holds a linear bulb. The bulb is supported with a series of wire springs that wrap around the poles, suspended equidistant from them.

Relay is a family of floor lamps that proposes an interchangeable lighting solution attached to a marble block. The exercise is an attempt to provide minimal support for the linear lighting elements through the simple gesture of touching the marble base with an invisible magnetic connection. The result is a distilled composition of basic elements.

Tip of the Tongue consists of table lamp, wall lamp and ceiling-mounted sconce, all which feature an interesting illusion: a luminous mouth-blown opaline sphere appears to roll down the edge of a solid polished brass base. This delicate gesture of a sphere poised on the edge of the surface evokes the familiar phenomenon of failing to retrieve a word from memory, expressing a moment of tension in the form of the design.

Get Set is a mouth-blown opaline sphere that rests on a solid brass bar, evoking a play of balance and stillness. The idea of a movement caught in a second of suspension is a recurring theme in Michael Anastassiades’ designs, which often trigger the imagination of the viewers, offering them a playful yet meditative moment of contemplation.

TUBE WALL LIGHT 1000MM Satin Brass. Opaline Borosilicate Glass Tube.

Tube Wall Lights were designed as an extension of the Tube Chandelier family. The fixture is a simple gesture of extending the bulb towards the wall through a rectangular brass section, allowing the right distance for more effective all-round illumination.

TUBE WALL LIGHT 1000MM Satin Brass. Opaline Borosilicate Glass Tube.

The Tube Chandelier was designed in 2006 as the first light for the Michael Anastassiades collection. The design for this fixture began as an exercise of subtraction. The challenge was to suspend the minimum number of incandescent light tubes in a sculptural configuration to form a vertical chandelier. The supports needed to be discreet so when lit, only three glowing lines would be seen. Although originally designed using the iconic incandescent 1 m tube bulbs, this fixture now uses LEDs. Custom patina, nickel or copper plating available.

The Mobile Chandeliers are delicate structures balanced in perfect equilibrium. Constructed following the principles of a mobile, these are arrangements of linear tubes, geometric light sources, reflective surfaces and counterbalancing weights. The pieces rotate freely and delicately, creating an ever-changing lighting configuration unique to the space they occupy.

Peaks is a family of pendants, composed of a string of elongated cones in different configurations. The graded shading on the curved surface of each cone is as much of a feature as the projected beams emitted from each cone. It can be displayed as a single, double or triple arrangement, pointing up or down depending on the preferred direction of light. An identical inverted cone acts as a rose attached to the ceiling. When the light is off, the forms appear very schematic, as if borrowed from a geometric still life. When on, the shading changes, as light casts along the curved surface.

The result of a carefully curated take on an existing series of products, the Brass Architectural Collection brings together the simplicity and elegance that characterises Michael Anastassiades’ aesthetic. Through a formal economy of shapes and materials, these architectural features call for an understanding of luxury as a discreet presence: glass, brass and nickel articulate a geometric, minimalistic alphabet of forms that adorn the space with luminosity akin to a piece of jewellery.

White Porcelain Series is a lighting collection comprising of sconces with an emphasis on materiality and simplicity of form. It is distinguished by refined proportions and sophisticated, invisible fixture details that reintroduce porcelain within a contemporary context and distances it from the utilitarian language with which it is often associated. Referring to the Bauhaus porcelain lights used in the 1930s, this simplified version is slip casted to provide a tough, resistant finish. Due to the manufacturing process, each piece is inherently unique.

BALL LIGHT SMALL, LARGE PENDANT ROD
Polished Brass. Opaline Borosilicate Glass Sphere.

One of the most recognisable designs by Michael Anastassiades Studio, the Ball Lights consists of pendants, wall pendants and ceiling and wall sconces. Designed around existing incandescent bulbs of that time, the project began as an exercise to abstract the bulb into a perfectly spherical ball, celebrating its perfect shape by repeating it in metal.

One Well Known Sequence is a collection of fixtures that usesthe standard unit of the light tube as a measure. Through the alternation of 1 m and 0.5 m modules, it creates a rhythmic language of recording space. The designs evolve as a parallel progression of rods, combining five variations of standard linear LED bulbs and metal tubes of the same diameter. With this series, Michael Anastassiades expands the compositional possibilities of some of the most structural elements of lighting, engaging the viewer in a rigorous yet playful exercise in measuring.

THE PHILOSOPHICAL EGG PENDANT Brass, Custom Royal Blue Patina. Mouth Blown Opaline Glass.

THE PHILOSOPHICAL EGG SMALL CEILING MOUNTED, WALL MOUNTED.

The Philosophical Egg was realised as an homage to the mysterious pendant that appears in the famous altar painting Brera Madonna by Piero della Francesca. The various fixtures featured reflect the same architectural approach that the artist represents in the painting. The refined composition of primordial shapes with an illuminated ostrich-egg-shaped oval allows the light to become the central focus of the space. The collection comprises various pendants and sconces.

Polished Brass and Brass, Custom Pink Patina. Mouth Blown Opaline Glass.

Inspired by the shape of fishing hooks, Angle Light is a collection of ceiling lamps that evokes the image of a luminous sphere captured in three different configurations. Just like in angling, it consists of simply a single, double and triple hook. As often happens in his practice, Michael Anastassiades infuses the memory of modernist design with humorous narrative and figurative qualities. He references a common, familiar object and takes it through a process of abstraction, aiming to create a pure definition of what a light source can be.

The Greek philosopher Socrates urged young people to look at themselves in mirrors so that, if they were beautiful, they would become worthy of their beauty. The Beauty Mirror takes inspiration from those ancient polished surfaces, offering a reflective image with a golden glow. This mirror challenges the notion of what a true reflection is, both in terms of consistency and colour.

BEAUTY MIRROR Polished Brass, Polished Nickel.

The Ball Vase has the same diameter as a bowling ball, with holes recalling those that allow the player to grip it. The vase is available in three models, each with a different distribution of holes arranged in awkward and dysfunctional configurations – one of the three holes that would be necessary for grip is always missing. Presented in polished brass, the spherical surface acts as a mirror, reflecting the entire room in which they are placed.

BALL VASE Polished Brass with Glass Tube.

“A few years ago I saw an acorn vase by Estrid Ericson, produced by Svenskt Tenn. I loved the simple poetry of an object of that nature, growing a single acorn. It was the hope for early spring, especially coming from a country with such heavy and dark winters. I became obsessed with the simple idea of suspending a seed on the surface of the water, submerged. Just the right level for it to germinate, with the possibility of it supporting itself in the absence of soil, allowing it to stand upright; exposed, all in clear view.”

Floating Forest consists of seven different models to be positioned over a drinking glass of your choice, each designed to suit a specific seed or stone.

Michael Anastassiades is a Cypriot-born Londonbased designer who conceives and produces lighting, furniture and other objects of lasting value that change how we experience the world around us.

For over twenty years, the practice has combined industrial accuracy with the passion and techniques of skilled craftsmanship. Blending precision with intuition and structure with spontaneity we transform familiar forms into quietly extraordinary works.

With a rich and diverse set of references from the natural and archaic forms of his native Cyprus to the history of modernism. From personal memories to the forms of everyday life, Michael Anastassiades’ playfully innovative work celebrates simplicity and the beauty of life’s imperfection.
