Lights for Freedom 10,000 women are currently held in Mexican prisons, usually because they are too poor to afford bail and therefore haven’t even been sentenced. Many have turned to a life of crime due to the inescapable poverty that so much of the country faces.

Unfortunately, there are no support networks or tools in place to help these women readjust to society once they are released from prison. With a criminal record, these women will struggle to find employment and likely fall back into the poverty, violence and unstable living conditions that resulted in their imprisonment in the first instance.

Thankfully Mexican charity ‘Pro Mujeres Cautivas’ believe in supporting women regardless of their past. The organisation seeks to provide the necessary training opportunities so that these women can be productive, useful to society and live a more fulfilled life.

To help raise money for Pro Mujeres Cautivas, Astro partner and Mexico City based lighting specialist Diez Company are holding a charity fundraiser ‘Lights for Freedom’. Astro has donated a number of our bestselling ‘Eclipse’ wall lights to twenty two artists who will use the lights as a blank canvas to create a piece of art based on the concept of freedom. The art will be auctioned on the 4th October with all proceeds raised going towards the amazing work of Pro Mujeres Cautivas.

Astro are thrilled to be part of such a fantastic, worthwhile event that will improve the lives of so many women and families across Mexico. We are looking forward to seeing how the artists incorporate our Eclipse wall lights as part of their art and convey the idea of freedom.

Diez Company Luces de Libertad

Diez Company was founded in 2006 by Gina Diez Barroso and Rodrigo Fernández. Gina has been a pioneer in the fields of arts and education for over 20 years beginning in 1990, the year in which she created and launched Grupo Diarq. DIARQ is a holding company with eight subsidiaries currently employing over 1,000 people.

Rodrigo’s vision of design and established network has led him to position Diez Company as a lighting expert producing bespoke pieces for private clients, whilst also representing a well curated selection of companies and products from around the globe.

Diez Company remains true to its values and mission; not just as a supplier of lighting products and lighting solutions, but as a partner in their client’s projects.

Astro’s inclusion within Diez Company’s portfolio has provided a completely new vision in the hospitality and contract world in Mexico and has opened many opportunities of growth for the company.

When painting, one leaves traces of oneself. There are different ways to do it. I aimed to leave my mark by thinking about freedom whilst feeling free when doing it. I considered abstracting the instance where one lets go, without any type of restriction but the one of the surface.

Me planteé abstraer los instantes en los que uno se deja ir, sin ningún tipo de limitante más que el de la superficie.

Al pintar, uno deja huella de sí mismo. Hay diferentes formas de hacerlo, yo me propuse dejar mi huella pensando en la libertad al mismo tiempo que me sentía libre haciéndolo.

Born in Mexico City (1991) she studied Graphic Design at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana Xochimilco, and photography at the Escuela Activa. She is currently studying for a degree in Visual Communication at CENTRO. She is interested in editorial design, photography, and in the interdisciplinary nature.

A compound reality, sometimes inconspicuously delimiting spatial boundaries. A flower, a space on a background. The opportunity to be free or a prisoner of space. Within the complexity and the chaos, we can observe the beauty of the flower representing the freedom of being authentic.

With over two decades of working as an architect, interior designer, furniture designer, academic, she is also head of her design firm and of the Interior Architecture department in CENTRO. Beata has created a link within the Mexican design community by connecting the industry with professionals and passionates in collaborations and projects that strengthen the conception and production of purposeful spaces. Through her work, she seeks to generate new perspectives regarding the understanding of the space and its habitability, trying to challenge the mundane in order to transform it into something extraordinary.

Una realidad compuesta a veces poco visible que delimita las fronteras espaciales. Una flor, un espacio de fondo. La oportunidad de ser libre o presa de un espacio. Dentro de la complejidad, y el caos resalta la belleza de esta flor que representa la libertad de ser auténtico.

Con más de dos décadas como arquitecta, interiorista, diseñadora de mobiliario y académica y al mando de su despacho de interiorismo y del departamento de Arquitectura de Interiores en CENTRO, Beata ha generado una cohesión en el genero del diseño en México al conectar la industria con los profesionales y apasionados en colaboraciones y proyectos que fortalecen la concepción y producción de espacios propositivos. A través de su trabajo busca generar nuevas perspectivas sobre el entendimiento del espacio y su habitabilidad, tratando de revolucionar y retar lo cotidiano para convertirlo en algo extraordinario.

When I think about freedom, the first image that pops in my mind is the ocean. The reflection of the light on the water; the contrast in movement, without light there is no darkness, and vice versa.

I wanted to make a lamp using a very free technique that I experimented in Shanghai last year, splashing the paint.

In this case the canvas, due to its properties, reacted by assembling the paint drops and creating an irregular movement, forming light labyrinths. My piece, REFLEXIONES, is the reflection of freedom. There is always a new opportunity, a new path in this labyrinth of moments, aspirations and dreams.

El proceso de esta pieza me reflejó la vida misma, patrones irregulares imposibles de repetir tal como son los momentos, únicos, irrepetibles… Mi pieza REFLEXIONES es el reflejo de la libertad, siempre hay una nueva oportunidad, un nuevo camino, en este laberinto de momentos, ideales y sueños.

Cuando pienso en libertad la primera imagen que viene a mi mente es el mar, el reflejo de la luz en el agua, el contraste en movimiento, sin luz no hay obscuridad y viceversa.

Quise hacer una lámpara con una técnica muy libre que experimenté en Shanghai el año pasado, salpicando la pintura.

Brenda Franco, Mexican visual artist living in Munich, graduated from the Universidad Anahuac as an Industrial Designer. She has since pursued a career in interior design. In 2012, she was invited to paint at MIRA where she completed her series “Entre muros y mares”. In 2015 and 2016 she participated in the Global Art Day at the Museum José Luis Cuevas.

In 2015, SUBJECT gallery in New York exhibited her series “Silencio”. She was selected by the Swatch Group Committee to complete her residence at the Swatch Art Peace hotel in 19

2015 where she created her series “Walking Blind” which was exhibited in Shanghai. In 2016 Isabelle Serrano Fine Arts gallery in Mexico City will show a collection of her latest series.

La artista visual mexicana residente de Múnich, Brenda Franco egresada de la Universidad Anáhuac como Diseñadora Industrial ha seguido una carrera en Diseño de Interiores. En 2012 fue invitada a pintar en MIRA en donde completó su serie “Entre muros y mares”. En 2015 y 2016 tuvo una participación en el Día Mundial del Arte en el Museo José Luis Cuevas. Daniel is an independent designer graduated from CENTRO and is also owner and creative director at Phigmento. He is currently the illustration tutor at the Studio Fashion Development Project. He has been graphic editor and art director for editorials and publicity agencies such as Time Warner, Young&Rubicam, and BBDO. He has also collaborated with renowned designers such as Lance Wyman, Carla Fernández, and Ezequiel Farca.

Additionally, he has developed museographic projects for the Museo Universitario de

Arte Contemporáneo, Museo Tamayo, and Museo de la Revolución.

She obtained a post-graduate certificate in Emerging Design & Research at the University of Pennsylvania School of Design. Her work has been exhibited in multiple cities around the US, and she currently works at Hugo & Marie in New York City.

That is just what this world needs; it needs to be more inclusive and sensitive.

Isabelle has exhibited her work in group shows and private galleries since the mid-90’s.

She previously worked as a textile designer in Indonesia, as well as in London. With her drawings and paintings she explores the themes of the feminine figure and movement through narration. Her drawings are the foundation of her creative process, focusing mainly on portraits showing a multitude of images of women

A visual poem, a white bird that is set free in order to fly across a white universe. The subtle contrast of the forms refers to the fundamental concept of the piece, the blurred boundary between being free and believing to be free.

2003 to 2008, he was the Art Director of a design and branding agency where he helped to develop brands for countries such as Costa Rica, El Salvador and the Dominican Republic. He received the “Award 2012 Guadalajara Design Week” for his outstanding professional career in Graphic Design. In 2012, he was a representative of the “Quórum Award” in the west part of the country and in 2013 he was a judge in the category of graphic design for said award which is considered the most important design award within Mexico.

The title is composed from a word game in Latin where “Tandem” means past, and “Horizon”; horizon. In the contemporary context, the word “Tandem” refers to paragliding flights and the pilot takes with him a copilot; he does this in “tandem”.

Jorge is from Mexico and graduated from ENPEG La Esmeralda, specializing in New Media. He is an engraver, draftsman, photographer, filmmaker, sculptor and installer. He received the FONCA scholarship 2012-2013 and was selected for the Young National Art Award in Mexico City 2010 and 2011. He has exhibited his work individually and collectively in the Pino Suárez subway station, at the Tolerance Museum, in the XXX and XXXI Young National Art Encounter in Aguascalientes, at the official event of G-20 Mexico in Los Cabos, at the Image Center, and in the Laboratory Museum Art Alameda, amongst others.

Poland. She is also a visiting professor at TEC de Monterey and CENTRO in Mexico. She is the creator of various objects, furniture, interior design and stage design exhibitions. She builds relationships between the worlds of business, science, art and design which result in educational projects, a new brand or an interdisciplinary group of co-operation.

Laskowska also curates exhibitions. She studied at the Paris Sorbonne and Poznan’ Academy of Fine Art in the late 1980s.

The moon is my symbol of freedom - to me it is a symbol of feminine power. The presence of La Luna, the full moon, simultaneously evokes purity of being and then induces the most wild and primitive self to come forward. Cyclical time, surges of longing, energy, power, hysteria, silence, and stillness. The moon is constant: evolving then receding, an endless waltzing meditation of internal freedom.

In the presence of a new moon solar eclipse, the sun tides rise higher and fall lower than charted and is believed that energetic forces are most powerful at that time. This kind of eclipse happens rarely, no more than 2 times in a year.

The exact location of the syzygy, or alignment, repeats once every 400 years approximately. It is rare and beautiful. Also inspired by writings of Octavio Paz. La luna es mi símbolo de libertad - para mí es un símbolo de poder femenino. La presencia de La Luna, la luna llena, evoca simultáneamente

En la presencia de un eclipse solar de luna nueva, la corriente del sol se eleva más alto y cae más bajo que lo planeado, y se cree que las fuerzas energéticas son más fuertes en ese momento.

Este tipo de eclipses es raro, no sucede más de 2 veces en un año. La ubicación exacta de syzygy, o la alineación, se repite únicamente cada 400 años aproximadamente. Es raro y bello. Viaje del Ángel is a homage to my mentor in art Barbara Paciorek who died of cancer in 2011. I depict her freedom from illness as a journey to the eternal light.

An engraver, sketcher and illustrator, Martha graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznañ, Poland thanks to Barbara Paciorek. She has a master’s degree in the ENAP UNAM and a PhD in DesignUrban Studies from UAMAzcapotzalco. She has been a collaborator at Nowicka Studio for many years. She is also a teacher and researcher at UAM Xochimilco.

Ricardo preferred not to explain his work as he believes it should be self explanatory.

His work is defined by a clear influence by the art brut and art outsider movements. In his work we can see characters with tattoos that give you more information about them. For Luces de Libertad his character has a key on his forehead with many different symbols about the frontier and expectation of being free.

Ricardo is one of the most international Spanish illustrators, he has exhibited his work in galleries in London, Madrid, Montreal, Barcelona and Porto. He has also worked for several advertising campaigns and brands such as Nike, Converse, Coca Cola and Levi’s. He has published several books and a graphic novel with publishing houses such as Nobrow, Lunwerg, Two Dollar Radio and Límina. He has also created murals for festivals such as Mural, Glastonbury Festival, Cut Out Fest and MULAFEST, as well as working with Football Club Barcelona.

He has also created murals for Urban Outfitters, Cirque du Soleil and YUL Project.

Ricardo prefirió no explicar su trabajo pues piensa que debe ser evidente el mensaje. Su trabajo se define por una clara influencia de los movimientos art brut y el art outsider. En su trabajo podemos ver personajes tatuados, que nos explican más sobre ellos. Para Luces de Libertad el personaje de la obra tiene una llave en la frente, con diferentes símbolos acerca de la frontera y expectativa de ser libre.
