he sudden death of Martin Plaatjes last Wednesday shook Frigo Café workers. “He was fine and then he just had a heart attack,” a Frigo Café worker said.“It happened at around 07:07 this morning,” Plaatjes was delivering meat for the company he worked for

that morning. His body lay in the shop for more than 3 hours. “The man had a heart attack. He was fine and then he had a heart attack,” said the worker. Having witnessed it, the workers were made to wait inside the café for the family, police and mortuary vehicle to arrive. While the area around the café was a hive of activity, the arrival of the family captured

responded to the alarm and administered first aid while the emergency services were also notified. Members of the SAPS happened to be in the Centre at the time and assisted Neelsie Security. Mr Plaatjes’ employer and next of kin were also notified. Mr Plaatjes was already unconscious when paramedics arrived. He was declared dead on the scene.

US het tans 3 976 internasionale studente.

verteenwoordig tydens hierdie geleentheid.

“Luister”

This photo, placed on Facebook, demonstrates students showing their solidarity with recent documentary “Luister”.

Luister: “Giving a voice to a group that is being stripped of that voice.”

Documentary sparks debate DA and ANC involved US management criticises “Luister” KAMVA SOMDYALA

A

short documentary, produced by small media group Contraband Cape Town, Luister, has sent chills down the spines of Stellenbosch University (SU) students and staff alike. The documentary tells the stories of 32 students and a lecturer who have been discriminated against on racial grounds. The students present various

reports of their experiences in and around SU and the documentary has received attention from other universities across the country, including the University of Cape Town, Wits and the University of Johannesburg. Speaking to Connect, one of the creators of the documentary, Dan Corder, stated that “[t]he purpose of the film was to give voice to a group that is being stripped of that voice.”

“

Open Stellenbosch’s opinion Open Stellenbosch has also released a statement on the matter on their official Facebook page: “Luister was a call to South Africans and the world to wake up to the reality of black students in Stellenbosch.” The statement further reads that “Stellenbosch University was the machinery behind the conceptualisation, creation, and implementation of Apartheid and its ideology and violence, yet they have moved to transformation at a snail’s pace”. The group acknowledge that they have seen management’s statement, which they call disappointing, but not without thanking people for the support. “You listened” the statement reads.

Luister was a call to South Africans to wake up to the reality of black students in Stellenbosch.

The statement concludes with “Open Stellenbosch will continue to break down the institutional culture in Stellenbosch and fight for the complete inclusion and safety of all marginalised students at Stellenbosch University”.

‘Various distortion in “Luister” documentary’ After the video was made public, the university released a statement by Wim de Villiers, US rector and vice-chancellor, which said the following: “My management and I are not indifferent towards these issues as they are exactly the kind of challenges that are currently receiving pertinent attention on various levels and in high-level discussions with groups and individuals on campus.” Further on in the statement, the university writes that their commitment to transformation cannot be over-emphasised and their seriousness towards transformation can be attested to by their participation in the Dignity March earlier this year and the creation of the bursary fund for descendants of inhabitants of Die Vlakte, to name but a few. Luister can be regarded as damning to the university, as the statement from management reveals the various “misrepresentations” in the video: “The impression is created that the SU management does not listen to students.” While comments on the

documentary range from “I sometimes ask God why he made me black” to “You must beg, if you are playing nice, they will be nice to you. But if you’re just a normal person, they just treat you like you are a dog”. Management maintains they are “committed to open discussions with all stakeholders and to transformation”. As the statement concludes, management acknowledges the part they have played in accelerating transformation and admit they are “excited about what the University can be”.

Political parties got involved Along with Open Stellenbosch, the Democratic Alliance (DA) and ANC Chief Whip, Phumelele Sizani, also released statements on the video. The DA statement reads: “The racial tensions at Stellenbosch University, as exposed by the Luister documentary should not be swept under the carpet. To this end, we agree that there needs to be an investigation into this matter, so as to establish all of the facts, and to take the necessary action to remedy the situation.” The ANC statement declares that “the ANC in Parliament is outraged” by the video. The ANC also believe the video should be investigated: “We believe that the conditions under which these students are forced to live at that university, as well as other similar conditions previously reported at other former white-only institutions, must be investigated by the SA Human Rights Commission to ensure a long-lasting interventions are imposed on these institutions to change their disgraceful practices.”

KAMVA SOMDYALA

The Mail & Guardian’s 200 Young South Africans list is appearing for the tenth year and continues to earmark the future sportsmen, musicians, economists and doctors, among others, of this country. Adrian van Wyk, Mariske Strauss and Ryelan Hardnick, from Stellenbosch University, are included in the 2015 Mail & Guardian’s 200 Young South Africans list.

Adrian van Wyk has played a prominent role in the successful InZync Poetry Sessions, which he established in 2011. “I’m a full-time poet, full-time student and a full-time organiser of the poetry sessions. I do everything with very little sleep, I don’t know what the future holds but I firmly believe that what I love — which is history, poetry, music and art — will guide me in a positive direction,” Van Wyk told the Mail & Guardian.

Mariske Strauss is making name for herself as a professional mountain biker. She told Mail & Guardian that cycling has always been her passion. Her goal is to participate in the 2016 Olympics in Rio. “One of the lessons I have learnt is that young people need to follow their dreams. It is important to never have regrets ... The old saying that ‘nothing worth having is easy to accomplish’ rings true.”

Ryelan Hardnick is a young cricket player to be reckoned with. “Knowing what you have to do and being focused on accomplishing it means that you can only blame yourself if you do not achieve it. I want to maintain my marks this year and push for a provincial spot next season. My immediate cricket focus is to play in the University Cricket Week in December,” Hardnick told Mail & Guardian.

Students for Law and Social Justice (SLSJ) screened Rehad Desai’s award winning documentary ‘Miners Shot Down’ at their end of year function and Open Stellenbosch (OS) hosted a political demonstration in remembrance of the miners who died. The screening was an educational opportunity to enlighten many students as to what exactly happened at the Lonmin Mines on August 16th 2012, as well as create understanding surrounding the injustice that was committed. As a representation of the humanity of those shot down, OS students marched from Banghoek road to the Rooiplein with numerous white crosses. Their demonstration was also done in disagreement of cheap black labour that is still present in current South Africa. Amongst those who spoke at the demonstration was Sikhulekile Duma. Struggle songs were also sung in remembrance of the injustice committed at Marikana.

My covers of Uptown Funk and Bills is what people can expect

Photos: Danie Nel

Music

Guitarist Loki Rothman unplugged You might remember Louwtjie Rothman, the schoolboy virtuoso from the first season of SA’s Got Talent way back in 2009. Well, he’s all grown up now and goes by the stage name of Loki Rothman. Franco Havenga spoke to this multi-talented musician. Here’s what makes him tick.

How has your life changed since you’ve released your debut album this year?

Each song on your album follows its own sound and feel. Was that intentional?

I can honestly say I've never been this busy in my whole career and I’m very grateful for that. I've also learned a lot releasing this album independently. I definitely have a much clearer vision for the future of my career and where it's headed.

No. I listen to and love so many genres. The album took a long time to create. Whatever I was listening to in my car over those two years would inspire me to write something in that direction. One month I’ve got a Ellie Goulding record in my car, or even a John Mayer record, nex t month Randy Newman and Jim Croce.

1

Although all the projects you are involved with have become successful in recent years, how have you decided to further the “one-manband-covers” idea? It’s become a lot bigger in production scale than your previous covers.

2

The “Uptown Funk” cover I did garnered a lot of at tention on social media and I’m always trying to be creative with other people’s songs and make them interesting. It’s a lot of fun and it’s great that people support these videos and share them on social media. That keeps it going and pushes me further.

3

Will you follow this trend with the new album, or would you like to narrow it down with your new music?

4

Probably narrow it down. I focused a lot on production with this album. I’ve realised that with a lot of the songs on the album I prefer doing acoustic versions to doing the full track live at shows.

5

What is the best country to play in?

Definitely Holland, but Moscow, Russia was a favourite of mine on the list.

Almost accompanying the release of your debut album, you are about to release your guitar DVD, Syndactyly. What can people expect from this DVD? What will be on it?

6

My covers of “Uptown Funk” and “Bills” is what people can expect, and also instrumental guitar tracks where I showcase my playing in dif ferent genres.

You were born with two pairs of webbed fingers which had to be surgically separated. What personal connection do you have with the title, Syndactyly, or why did you choose the name?

7

I chose the title “Syndactyly” for the album because I think it’s something that makes me unique. I mean what are the odds of my parents ever thinking this kid would use his fingers one day for a career. It reminds me that any thing can happen.

8

Any local artists you would like to collab with?

Beatenberg. I love their sound. They've got a cool vibe happening. Unique sound.

Would you ever consider playing in a band again or starting your own band? Jack Parow excluded, more in the lines of Ben-Nevis.

9

If there were 36 hours in day, yes. Playing in a band is fun. Especially making music with your friends. If I had the time I would, definitely. Who knows, maybe somewhere down the line.

You have distinguished yourself as one of the country’s best guitarists, released a debut album and guitar DVD, all in a matter of the last year. What’s next? (A five year plan?)

10

I think get ting my music heard by as many people nationally and later, hopefully, internationally. Build my brand with a solid following. Also want to try and collaborate more with some of SA’s local artists.

Fast facts Hometown: Cape Town What’s on your playlist right now? Jim Croce

When did you first pick up a guitar? 11 years old

Do your guitars have names? No, they are all just girlfriends

Do you have an all-time favourite musician? Chris Martin

rab yourself a beer, sit down on the couch and relax into the groove that is your weekend. The perfect soundtrack to this scene? Well, it takes the form of the psychedelic electro pop rock genius from the inner sanctum of Kevin Parker’s world and goes by the name of Currents. The band’s third album stands completely separate from the previous two: themes of isolation, identity and solitude are recurring, but this time there is less emphasis on catchy guitar riffs and definitely more focus placed on the electronic side of things. “Let it Happen” is not your

typical climactic single, but the genius, almost loop-like progression of the song sets the mood for the rest of the album: you will want to play it on repeat. Parker has always been honest in his lyrics. The sheer arrogance of “’Cause I’m a Man” can be easily forgiven when delivered by such sweet melodies and slow rhythms.

Look forward to Parker’s underrated bass skills taking the lead and supporting the disco sounds on tracks like “New Person”, “Same Old Mistakes” and “Love Paranoia”. With its transitional nature, Currents will transport you to the era of disco and synth pop, proving that it might just be Tame Impala’s most convincing album yet.

Tweak-fans relive teen years during reunion show MIZAN VAN DER MERWE

“If she doesn’t know who Tweak is, she’s too young for you!” In-between the playful banter from Garth Barnes, Tweak’s lead singer, the shoving from the excited crowd, and the large penis balloons that were being thrown around from person to person, the crowd at Aandklas, Stellenbosch began to feel like real teens again. On Friday, August 21st, Tweak had their second-last show that formed part of their 10 year reunion tour that included shows at Oppikoppi, Arcade Empire Pretoria and Assembly. Tweak was an alternative rock band that started jamming in January 1998, but released their first EP in 2000, when they started experimenting with pop punk. “When we started the band, we did it to get chicks because when you’re in matric it’s really hard to get chicks. So what do you do? You pick up a guitar

and you write a song,” Barnes explained from stage before singing “Buy the World”. To say the crowd was ecstatic, is definitely underplaying the intensity of the event. Hardcore Tweak fans were singing along word for word, moshing and dancing to the beat of the music many of them grew up with. One of the most memorable moments of the night was definitely when the band stopped singing halfway through “Birthday Card”; the crowd jumped in, singing the entire chorus of the song flawlessly. “When we heard we were doing this reunion show we thought: ‘Is anyone even going to remember this band?!’ but hearing you sing the lyrics back to us is amazing,” Barnes said to the buzzing crowd. The night kicked off with Veladraco and ended on a high note with Loveglove Pyrotechnics. This will be one of Loveglove’s last shows as they recently announced their decision to call it quits.

The Imax experience exposed FRANCO HAVENGA

Life is hard for movie-goers these days. What with the endless list of questionable action-movie titles and childhood heroes turning against each other around every corner (why the heck are Batman and Superman even fighting?). Let’s not beat around the bush – despite all this excitement, we all still download movies or rely on people that do. Why would I, as a student, pay even more to visit the Imax at CapeGate when I could watch it at home or at Pulp? For a real movie-lover, like myself, the reasoning is simple - it is necessary to treat yourself from time to time. So I thought I’d test the waters of this cutting-edge sound and viewing technology. Unfortunately, I was left with mixed feelings.

“

I don’t care how cute the Minions are, watching them in Imax is a waste of the technology, and quite frankly, your money.

I don’t care how cute the Minions are, watching them on an Imax screen is a waste of the technology and, quite frankly, your money. It is not necessary to take a girl to the Imax on your first date. This is the kind of romantic trick-up-your-sleeve that you might want to leave for a one year anniversary when she’s probably already impressed with you and no longer a flight risk. However, big releases might not follow your anniversary

schedules and if she turns down your awesome idea to watch Star Wars 7 in Imax to congratulate her with her exam results, she wasn’t the one anyway. Nonetheless, the fact that Imax has moved on from bad documentaries to blockbusters means that it is probably here to stay. The sheer size of the screen and quality of the sound has endless possibilities. Still, a student budget can be spent on more exciting things.

STUDENT LIFE

Get yourself ready for spring It feels just like yesterday that winter started creeping into our homes, yet slowly (but surely!) spring is on its way. Spring is a time for change and with the change in seasons it might just be a good idea to make a few changes to yourself, your home and your surroundings. Compiled by Mizan van der Merwe

Body & Mind

Above: Fiona Faure, Instagram Below: Donna Blagus, Instagram

Getting your body ready for spring: • Warmer weather means no more boots. Get your feet ready for spring by making sure they are flip-flop ready (and guys - this applies to you too). Make sure your toenails are short and neat and that your heels are in top shape. If you like to paint your toenails, opt for a bright or vibrant colour to celebrate the change in weather. • Dry-brushing is an amazing way to increase circulation and to get rid of dead skin cells. Do it once a day before showering and you will see and feel the difference within days. It also reduces cellulite. • Your skin can also benefit from using a good exfoliator. You can either buy a scrub or make one at home. • Don’t stress about not being tan, only a few lucky people are going to look like they just came from the beach. Don’t harm your skin by going to extreme measures. • Wear sunscreen every day to prevent damage to your skin. • Treat yourself to a haircut. Winter usually leaves your hair dry and a haircut will bring new life to your hair.

HOME

Getting your home ready for spring: • Take a day to clean your room, flat or house. And with clean I mean really clean everywhere: in the cupboards, in the fridge, underneath your bed. Seriously. Everywhere! It’s important to get rid of all the dust and hair and dirt that might be collecting in the corners of your living space. • Open the curtains or blinds more often to let some natural light into your living space. • If you have some extra money to spend, add more colour and life to your living space by adding some colourful scatter cushions or throws. Bright colours can lift your mood and get you out of your winter rut. • Sort out your cupboard by starting to pack away all the winter clothes you know you won’t be wearing that often anymore. Also throw out the clothes you know you don’t fit into anymore or take them to a thrift shop.

Die Matie not here to polish your image Which corner are you in?

HANNES KRUGER

M

edia freedom took a knock last week when eight SRC-candidates attempted to silence Die Matie after we published comments and opinions on the SRC-candidates. They did not hesitate to call a meeting with the editorial staff and mentioned a set of claims regarding what should and should not have been published. They also handed us a document, lacking in detail, in which they attempted to explain their contempt. Their complaints varied from that of defamation to their characters, to portraying “certain candidates in a favourable and bright light” and bad publicity. Is this not reminiscent of the then-NP regime and current ANC government? They call for openness, honesty and transparency during caucuses, but as soon as these claims don’t suit them or don’t count in their favour, these ideals are tossed aside without hesitation. Die Matie doesn’t handle verbal complaints, and this was clearly stated to them during the meeting. The complaints process was thoroughly explained to

them and Die Matie still awaits their written complaints with the proof that there were factual errors or that it might be illegal to publish such opinions. Have they since realised that they don’t have a case? Equally shocking is the revelation of newly-appointed SRC member, James de Villiers, regarding the SRC’s relationship with Die Matie. De Villiers told Die Matie that certain members of the SRC declared during their camp the past weekend that Die Matie should be shut down (see p.11). What?! Dear SRC 2016, Die Matie does not exist to polish your image. You’re more than welcome to publish your own PR-newspaper to further this noble cause. The role reporters play is much larger than simply conveying information. The public demands hearing other opinions and voices other than the dominant group inside a society. One of Die Matie’s duties is to guard against the monopoly of opinions and information of those with power and abilities, and to encourage deeper thinking and reflection. Both the student and academic community will be irrevocably

impoverished without a newspaper that enlightens, guards against misuse of power, and ensures that all opinions, including those of the smaller minority, are conveyed to students and staff. Per definition, this means that readers will invariably be angered by, or irritated with, articles that appear in Die Matie. Bear in mind that Die Matie does not serve a community that is in need of constant upliftment. Die Matie serves the people of a place of intellectual stimulation and continuous questioning. Therefore Die Matie ought to be extra-critical, audacious and adventurous; even provocative. Die Matie isn’t a small-town knock-and-drop which only exists to serve as a forum for advertisements of the local bakery and funeral services. It’s a platform for change, scrutiny, debate, questioning and liberation of notions in an institution of academic excellence. We want the local news items and information of campus life in Die Matie, but we demand more. And if we can get more and it doesn’t suit us, we must still respect and safeguard Die Matie’s independence. If we don’t, everybody loses. Hannes Kruger is the associate editor of Die Matie

The 2015/16 SRC members have been elected and now it is time to assess the divisions that will occur at the table when it comes to decision making. It goes without saying that the 2015/16 SRC members deserve their positions. With over 6000 votes cast, both electronically and by ballot paper, one can already conclude that it was an election period that pushed all boundaries. 50% of the candidates elected received over 2000 votes per person and that is by all accounts exemplary. As the adage goes, “now the real work begins”. And where it will begin is by electing the chairperson. Coming out strongly for that position at the caucus week was Bradley Frolick while Axolile Qina also made his intentions known. Let us assess that part. It is important to note that the appointment of the executive of the SRC (of which the chairperson forms part) happens internally. In other words the current members of the SRC will vote for a chairperson and other relevant executive positions such as vice-chairperson and secretary-

general. For Frolick, I see Marc Rudolph supporting him, together with Lwazi Phakade, James de Villiers, Lethiwe Mbatha and to a lesser extent Mynhardt Krüger. Qina, on the other hand will probably have the backing of Carina Stapelberg, Lianda du Plessis and again to a lesser extent Krüger. Krüger has never been one to show the card he’ll play. I guess it all depends on the day and probably the colour of the shirt he is wearing – his alliance with Patrick Lukusa has been dealt an unfortunate hand. But the divisions, believe you me, will go deeper than that. The divisions I speak of were evident during the caucuses and the whole election period and one can already see them going into full mode when it comes to the decision making. However, having said that, I do believe the group will make all the right decisions for the benefit of the students. People will choose their sides and be loyal to them.

kwytraak Eks-pornverslaafde, trotse Shofarlid en depressie as kind

J

ames de Villiers is ’n huppelende bondel energie.

Hy is erg geboelie.

Hoërskool was vir hom ’n “liberating experience”.

Hy onthou sy eerste rubriek was “so ’n prekerige ding – moenie vloek nie of so iets”.

“

Toe hy “elf of twaalf” was, het hy probeer selfmoord pleeg.

Are you Listening? Luister jy?

T

he Luister documentary has sparked debate not only on Stellenbosch University (SU) campus, but has received at tention nation-wide. It even had a front page splash on the Son! Political parties jumped on the bandwagon, with both the DA and ANC having released statements on this challenging documentary (page 3). Many students felt the video was too

one-sided and that confusion arises as to how many of the students interviewed were enrolled at either Elsenburg or SU. Who are these people? Where do they study? Where did these events take place?

Luister is more than just another documentary about racism on YouTube that you scroll past. It created a stir, went viral and currently has over 100 000 views; the response Luister has elicited include of ficial statements about the video’s content; its trending on social media; numerous articles surrounding racism and SU have been published, both in print media and online. It is sad that outsiders now see SU as a place where racism reigns. Don’t get me wrong: This video serves as a necessary eye-opener, but it could have been done bet ter. More information

could have been provided as to where the interviewees study and it must be added that the documentary, as a whole, begs objectivity. Here’s to hoping that Luister will reach the biased, and create a plat form for discussions amongst the fair. To those who have not yet watched the documentary: Go to Youtube and search for Luister.

SCREENSHOT OF THE WEEK

We All Bleed: pad-drive initiative

SU student making (crimson) waves

By virtue of the fact that we are women, or know women – be it our girlfriends, mothers, sisters, wives or friends – we know, or know of, the monthly struggle faced by all women across the world. If it is not yet evident, this monthly struggle is the menstruation period. Besides the lovely PMS that accompanies our monthly friend, we spend a lot of money on so-called feminine hygiene during this period of our lives. The average packet of pads or tampons costs between R20-R40 – and, depending on your flow, this can translate into hundreds of rands per year, which can be a crippling expense for the average middle class woman. In lower income families across the world, sanitary ware is considered a luxury – which is shocking in the modern world we live in. Thousands of girls miss over a hundred days of school a year because they cannot afford sanitary ware, a reality in our own backyard. In fact, many of these girls drop out of school

because the embarrassment is just too great. These girls lose out on education and leadership opportunities that we, as university students, are afforded – opportunities that they will never again have; a true loss to our development as a country. More than that, they lose their basic human right to dignity and sanitation. I have taken the initiative to try to make a small difference in the lives of others by starting my own pad-drive within my residence. I believe we can spread this across campus to make an even bigger difference.

Recent discourse involving this organisation and several others are geared towards purging universities of the remnants of apartheid, writes Cathelynne Walker. “We have been concerned with singing cumbaya, with being a rainbow nation – this needs to end.” This was the statement given by a speaker at the Open Stellenbosch Confronting White Supremacy mass meeting on the 29th of April at the University of Stellenbosch. Recent discourse involving this organisation and several others are geared towards

purging universities of the remnants of apartheid – seemingly through dethroning Afrikaans as a language. While this may appear as an attack against the white population of South Africa, the reality sings a different tune. According to a report released by the South African Institute of Race Relations in 2013, a growing majority of Afrikaans speakers in South Africa are, in fact, coloured people. Can an organisation that claims to be fighting for the rights of all black people (“black” defined as “all non-white persons”) be trusted to fulfil this task if they are attacking the majority language of one of their focus groups? What is perhaps more concerning is the shortage of coloured voices on campus regarding transformation and the dismantling of apartheid. Instead, these narratives are overshadowed by a kind of raciallinguistic war between white Afrikaners and black people. This is especially problematic, considering that only 61% of white South Africans speak Afrikaans, compared to a whopping 75%

GORRELKOP

of coloured speakers. Are some population-groups’ stories more important than others? However, this inclination towards the coloured community can hardly be taken with surprise, considering the attitude that government spokesperson Jimmy Manyi has expressed towards the population group. According to a statement released in 2011, the government felt that the Western Cape had an “over-supply” of coloured people and that they should move to other parts of South Africa in order to accommodate “demands for coloured workers”. In light of the fact that core members of these campus transformation-groups are associated with the student leagues of the ANC – the government in question – this type of trickle-down behaviour can only be expected. Acknowledgement of the fact that the Western Cape does enjoy a majority of coloured people is essential, considering the location of Stellenbosch University. Should an institution be purged of its language and its associated culture if these

two factors are geographically relevant? Granted, the ideal of working towards a truly African university is admirable. However, the concept of “African” must be placed under scrutiny for its custom of appeasing a black majority to the detriment of other “lessimportant” racial groups. Instead, an approach of diversity and tolerance of culture must be encouraged, where it is within the bounds of our Constitution. There are many beautifully diverse population groups that are enrolled in the University. A conversation involving only the “historically relevant” groups cannot and will not be effective. If Stellenbosch University is black and white, coloureds represent the grey area – unable to speak up for or against a cause which concerns them more than anybody else in the world. • Cathelynne is a law student, Primaria of Aurora PSO and Chair of the French Society.

GARGLE TRANSLATE DE LATEST GOSSIP Once again, Gargle are inclusive as always and Gargle shall now translate so that everybody can understand. Gargle have heard of a man’s residence that might soon have to become mixed and Gargle have heard of another student accommodation that are already mixed but want to become a residence and Gargle are not sure how HEMIS will work and whether de koshuisplasingsbeleid can just place you there and then you have to pay many more than you would have paid in a normal residence. Also was Gargle shocked to hear about all these smarty pant lecturers that registered with ashleymadison.com with their university email addresses. Gargle are just now worried that these Impact Team hackers will hack into de anonymous pages where Gargle have raged and crushed.

Photo: OUTSIDER COMMUNICATIONS WINNING WAYS Both the Maties men’s and women’s hockey teams won their respective Western Province Grand Challenge titles. The women’s team had won their title before their final match, as they boasted an unassailable lead after winning both their matches the weekend of 15 August. This is now the fifth consecutive year that the ladies in maroon have won the title. The men’s team have won their title for the third consecutive year in a row, the first time they have achieved this. Furthermore, they were undefeated in the last three seasons.

Pieke dominate Libertas in Men’s Challenge League SEBASTIAN POTGIETER

M

onday 17 August saw Libertas and Pieke’s hockey teams tackle one another in the Men’s Challenge League. The match was largely a formality as both sides had struggled in the season to find any substantial form. A victory for Pieke, however, could see them clinch a top three finish along with the undefeated Vesta and the impressive Medies side. They would, however, first need to see-off an unpredictable Libertas side. The match started at a high tempo with both sides jostling for possession. Pieke seemed to settle into their game quicker than the Libertas side and consequently played some dangerous balls down their right flank. Libertas’ defense, however, stood solid and with some slick tackling and passing they were able to quickly move the ball down the other side of the field, forcing Pieke’s defense to scramble to the rescue. Libertas continued to probe the defense with some good runs on the baseline forcing the Pieke goalkeeper to step off his line on a few occasions. Unfortunately Libertas were

let down by their finishing as a few golden opportunities from right in front of the goal went astray. Two consecutive short corners for Libertas also went astray as the ball bounced over the stopper’s stick and a second went wide of the goal. Feeling rejuvenated from being let off of conceding a goal, Pieke went straight onto the attack, pushing the ball all the way down to Libertas’ defensive circle. A quick snap shot from a Pieke attacker forced a sharp glove save out of Libertas’ goalkeeper. Soon after a well-played ball across the face of the Libertas goal failed to find its mark, as it just evaded the attacker running on the back post. The half ended with the scores still at 0-0, but with Pieke seeming to be the dominant of the two sides, with the slick passing and balls down the middle of the field causing some problems for the Libertas defense. The second half picked up where the first half had left off, with Pieke quickly onto the attack. Moments into the half Pieke thought they had scored a certain goal. A good run into the Libertas

circle along the right hand baseline led to an inch perfect pass onto the penalty spot, where a Pieke player stood waiting for the ball. A one-time slap shot from the waiting player was on target but was athletically saved by Libertas’ goalkeeper, Johann Shore, who in a full stretch dive cleared the ball off the goal line with his stick. The save, however, was postponing the inevitable as Pieke spent the rest of the game on attack. They were finally able to get their goal as a ball from the 5-yard line was deflected into the goal by a waiting player. Moments later Pieke doubled up on their lead as a shot deflected off of the goalkeeper’s pads and fell kindly for a Pieke striker who was simply in the right place at the right time. The game was sealed when Pieke converted a short corner with a shot into the bottom left corner of Libertas’ goal. Pieke thus won the game 3 - 0 against a tired Libertas side. In the Men’s Super League, Simonsberg have maintained their good form from the summer league and are sitting comfortably at the top of the table, 6 points clear of second place Eendrag.
