RES ANIMALS Do animals belong in university residences?

Residences under spotlight for animal cruelty HAYLEY GRAMMER

A

nimal cruelty came under spotlight recently after a video of a chicken being manhandled at a residence party sparked outrage. The annual Hoenderdag, held at Stellenbosch University’s (SU) Helshoogte residence, saw a chicken being thrown into the air and fed cigarettes and alcohol. Although Helshoogte was proven innocent, as the perpetrator was neither a SU student nor Helshoogte resident, there are concerns about the safety of animals in SU residences. “Eendrag has an ostrich in its residence. “Why do they need it there? It’s not a suitable environment, it’s noisy and stressful for the animals,” said Jessica Perrins, head of fund-raising and communications at the Animal Welfare Society of Stellenbosch (AWSS). “Although the chickens at Helshoogte may be looked after well, they are kept on the roof in a cage with no grass. “We intend to enter into discussion with the Ethics and Transformation Committee’s at the university because ultimately our goal is to have no animals in the residences.” Ostrich on campus Eendrag initially declined to comment on animals being present in residences, but once Die Matie made it known that they were aware of their ostrich, vice prim Emile Nauta commented on the situation. “Sponsie is a baby ostrich who was no longer wanted by the farmer he came from in Heidelberg, so we took him in at two to three weeks, which places him now at just under two months,” said Nauta. “He roams freely through the quad

during the day and I put him away every single night in the enclosure we built him. “I make sure he has water bowls placed around the quad and in his enclosure, which I clean and refill every day. “I release him back into the quad in the mornings, and feed him then too.” According to Nauta, AWSS found the ostrich to be well looked after but a municipal law worker said they were not permitted to house the ostrich on the premises because it was classified as livestock. “It was agreed that we could take two weeks to find alternative living arrangements for him. “As such, we have found a farm that can look after ostriches and we are saying goodbye to Sponsie today,” he said. University trusts students Pieter Kloppers, director of the Centre for Student Communities, said that students at SU have shown over time that they are worth being trusted. “Student communities, through the interaction with various structures within the university, showed that they realise when things go wrong, both through a fault of their own and sometimes even without any fault of their own. “As with any community it can happen that people who are not part of a particular student community can act in a way that is inconsistent with the ethos or way things are done in that student community. “The example of abusing a chicken at an event hosted at Helshoogte is a case in point,” he said. According to university spokesperson Martin Viljoen, Helshoogte provided their full support to the AWSS in their investigation and the security at

RES PETS Sponsie, an ostrich from Eendrag (left). The infamous Helshoogte chicken recoverd (right). the event was fully compliant with the Public Safety at Recreational Events Act. “House Committee members immediately stepped in when they saw that the chicken was abused and made sure of its safety and that it was cared for. Permission from the Resident Head, SU Events and the Stellenbosch South African Police Service Events Committee was approved. “Security was on duty at both the entrance and exit, and it is unclear at this stage how the individual managed to bring the chicken onto the premises,” said Viljoen. Prim of Helshoogte, JC Meiring,

said that the residence takes pride in their chickens and if someone from Helshoogte would have seen the abuse happen, there would have been “serious consequences for that person”. “The minute we were made aware of the video, we immediately started searching for the individual and the chicken. “One of our House Committee members actually caught the thrown chicken and brought it inside to the cage where the other chickens were being kept. “We are very angry about the way Helshoogte has been represented because of this incident, it’s been com-

pletely blown out of proportion and the main thing is that it’s not even someone from Stellenbosch University or Helshoogte, it just happened on our premises.”

Cruelty is a criminal offence AWSS laid a complaint with police and the case has been assigned an investigator. According to Perrins, AWSS met with the investigator on Monday and they are busy gathering evidence. They ask if eye witnesses can please come forward to provide evidence. AWSS can be contacted either on Facebook or by calling 021 883 9129.

VISION AFRIKA

SU receives millions to Academic support offered to children investigate transformation

KYRA TARR

Creating opportunity where progress is hampered by adverse living conditions and insufficient resources is the driving force behind Vision AfriKa. Founded in 2004, Vision AfriKa is a non-governmental organisation that serves the youth of Kayamandi. With an impressive list of both local and international donors, amounting to 33 partners overall, the institution supports 600 students every year with 100 students having gained university acceptance to date. Not only does Vision AfriKa offer academic support to high school students, but they also run a pre-primary school, a primary school and two aftercare facilities (one in Kayamandi and the other in Vlottenburg). The project’s reach extends to assisting students during their university application process as well as offering vocational training and business skills development. “Education is important not just in South Africa but throughout the whole African continent. “I see Vision AfriKa being all

ALL SMILES Vision Afrika in action. over the country, offering support to underprivileged communities and making sure that our future produces leaders with an excellent academic foundation,” said Samkela Mhlakaza, marketing coordinator at Vision AfriKa. As a student, Mhlakaza went through the various programmes offered by the organization. “Vision AfriKa has always been

one of the organisations that each and every young person in the community of Kayamandi would like to join,” he said. The selection process for students consists of a filled-out form and an interview round, with places being awarded to those deemed most deserving and determined. Katherine Lindsay, a Stellenbosch graduate and volunteer at various outreach programmes in Kayamandi, spoke highly of Vision AfriKa. “They have the most wonderful objectives,” she said. When asked about volunteering opportunities for Stellenbosch University (SU) students, Mhlakaza welcomed as many as possible. “Vision AfriKa is an open space for each and every one who would like to make sure they are part of a process that produces better leaders for tomorrow.” He also quoted the isiXhosa saying “Umntu ngumntu ngabantu", meaning, a person is a person through other people. The multi-million Andrew W Mellon Grant has provided Stellenbosch University (SU) with the means to research institutional transformation in South Africa. The Sociology and Social Anthropology Department used the grant to launch its Indexing Transformation Project two weeks ago. Its aim is to discover how best to transform higher education settings by engaging with critical teaching and institutional transformation. Prof Steven Robins, leader and principal investigator of the project, said they will question who defines, evaluates, and measures institutional transformation. The project will also look at the way in which knowledge in the human sciences in South Africa has responded to the racialised histories of their formation. Robins will be joined by coprincipal investigator Dr Bernard Dubbeld, and a steering committee consisting of Jan Vorster, Elizabeth Hector, Anne Wiltshire and Nwabisa Madikane. The Mellon Foundation’s five-

year R11.2m grant supports a parttime programme manager, various research projects, 78 graduate student scholarships, and a weekly seminar series. In addition, an international conference, dealing with challenges for the study of transformation, as well as an annual workshop on transformation issues, will be held. “It is the outcome of the recognition that our university spaces and intellectual work require serious examination in relation to persistent racial inequalities and obstacles to democratic, inclusive intellectual practice, a recognition amplified by recent student protests across South Africa,” said Robins. The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation was formed in 1969 through the consolidation of Mellon’s two children’s existing foundations. Students are invited to attend the Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology’s seminar entitled ‘Revolution, Restitution and Redress: Obligations towards restoring our Humanity’ on 2 March in the Arts Building. The lecturer will be prof Sharlene Swarts from the University of Cape Town.

DISQUALIFIED

DASO chair exits one day before voting ANÉ VAN ZYL

Lwando Nkamisa, chair of the Democratic Alliance Student Organization (DASO) in Stellenbosch, was disqualified from the SRC elections one day before the votes closed. The decision of the election convenor came after complaints about an email Nkamisa sent to DASO members. Dylan Swigelaar, the election convenor, called the email “highly troubling”, because it “contained statements that de-campaigned other candidates, sought to politicise the campaigns of other candidates, contained statements which were inflammatory regarding the consequences of certain candidates being elected, and was a gross conflict of interest”. The constitution specifies that all candidates must refrain from any attempt at misusing power, resorting to privileges or influence or using any form of coercion intended to persuade someone to vote for any particular candidate. In a long message posted on Facebook, Nkamisa explained that the specific rules he violated were not explicitly stated. Nkamsia said the initial reason for the email was to inform students that there were candidates standing for SRC that are DA aligned.

Photo: HENK OETS LWANDO NKAMISA at a SRC caucus.

“No names of fellow candidates were mentioned in the email. What was referred to was alignment with political parties, such as the EFF and the ANC. “I really don’t understand the word de-campaigning because he never mentioned a single rule from the constitution that I had broken.” Nkamisa later sent a second email to DASO members stating that “all students may and must vote freely and independently and there is no suggestion on the part of DASO or myself that they should vote along party lines”. “They should vote for the candidates who they think will best serve them on

the SRC.” Nkamisa explained that he never recieved complaints from anyone who recieved the email. “They asked me if it would be fair for them to vote for me only, as they only knew one candidate. I provided clarity on questions I had received.” Nkamisa added that the email the convenor sent to campus “could’ve been done better, because the way it was written made room for many theories to take place”. Nkamisa considered taking the case to student court, but decided against it. “After a long and arduous contestation of our current prolonged 2017 SRC election, I have decided not to contest the effect of the decision of our elections convenor,” said Nkamisa. He further stated that he believes the decision of the election convenor was made in good faith and in line with the electoral code. “I think that Lwando would have made an excellent SRC member. I hold him in high regard and I am disappointed that he sent the email that led to his disqualification,” said Romek Sadowski, a fellow candidate. “I think he made a mistake to send that email, in the climate of what happened with AfriForum last year, everybody had to be extra careful,” said Sadowski.

BIG LOSS

Most qualified SRC candidate resigns ANÉ VAN ZYL

Romek Sadowski, the candidate who got the most votes in the election, resigned from the SRC. Sadowski was arguably the most qualified to lead the students as Chairperson of the SRC, having previously served on the SRC (manager of safety) and as a House Committee member (treasurer), as well as the vice prim of the Helshoogte Residence. Sadowski received 54.4% of all votes, more than any other candidate. “There was no malice in my decision to resign from the SRC after I failed to win the chairpersonship. I was prepared to balance the SRC and Actuarial Science Honours for the opportunity to lead the student body. “I decided (with great difficulty) that if I did not get the position, it was not worth risking my final year of academics to serve a second time in a position that I had held before.” Sadowski said that students are unaware of the extent to which the SRC has decision-making power in the university. “The SRC makes recommendations to the Rector’s Management Team (RMT) on a variety of issues that affect them hugely. “I think that most students at this university are relatively comfortable in their lives as students and don’t experience the kind of problems plaguing the likes of students who do actually interact with the SRC. “Many students have complained that they will not engage with the SRC because it has become ‘too politicised’. “That is a self-fulfilling prophecy and will only lead to more politicisation of the SRC if politicallyneutral students refuse to participate in student leadership on that level,” said Sadowski. Sadowski added that according to him, the SRC seems to be becoming more political, “not because there are

ROMEK SADOWSKI before he quit.

more politically-affiliated students in that space than before, but because politically-neutral students don’t participate”. Sadowski said that the only way to unpoliticise the SRC is to get more politically-neutral students to participate in elections as candidates. Reggy Kgatle will now replace Sadowski in the 2017 SRC. Dylan Swigelaar, election convenor, stated that because Sadowski’s resignation falls within a certain period after the election, the person with the next most votes automatically becomes part of the SRC. Sadowski further added that he hoped that Kgatle would make it onto the SRC and he is humbled that his decision will result in Kgatle becoming a member in his place. When asked if he would run for SRC again in August, Sadowski said that he wouldn’t rule anything out, but he doesn’t plan to study at Stellenbosch University (SU) next year.

Integrated 24 hour emergency service for Maties

SU aims to test 1000 students for HIV status

Nationwide crisis service A fee-free rate is charged when ER24 paramedics are called out to a scene where a student needs to be stabilized. Only when the student must be transported, costs will be applicable (preferential ER24-tariffs). This will be deducted from the student's own account. The student will be transported to the closest, best facility for the specific injury – a private hospital for students with medical aid and a government hospital for students without medical aid.

ARLEEN STONE

M

atie students can now make use of a nationwide effort to keep healthy, mentally, emotionally and physically. Discussion amongst students and staff about the previous crisis services at Stellenbosch University (SU) led to a new collaborative initiative between Campus Health Services, the Centre for Student Counselling and Development (CSCD) and ER24. This new collaboration was formed in order to provide a more integrated and comprehensive emergency service and became a reality in early 2017.

What to expect from this service It will be a 24 hour crisis service that is available nationwide for SU registered students. When a student phones the crisis number (010 205 3032) during a crisis situation, the student calling will need to identify themselves as a SU student and the university as a corporate client of ER24. The necessary questions will then be asked before the specific service will be dispatched. The service is applicable to all students, whether they are on campus, but also when travelling on sport tours, academic outings, and even when they are at home or on holiday. The service consists of Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Trauma

CRISIS NUMBER ER24 helpline. Counselling (telephonically or face to face), as well as a medical hotline. Students can phone the medical hotline to receive advice on how to manage a medical situation. Depending on the situation, the trauma counsellor will either be male or female, and they will be comfortable in speaking Afrikaans, English, or IsiXhosa. The services offered by these SU Centres will continue as usual throughout the day, but ER24 is supporting from 16:00 in the afternoon until 08:00 the next morning and during times when the current existing emergency provision is not permitted to respond. Students can make use of the CSCD Crisis Number (082 557 0880).

Why the project was started As any crisis can manifest in a variety of ways, ranging from physical to mental harm, including the management of consequences of crowd unrest and disasters (fire in a building or residence), it poses a risk to students and staff. “The management of crises within the changing climate at Stellenbosch University is an important matter that had to be revisited,” explained Dr Munita Dunn-Coetzee, director of the Centre for Student Counselling and Development. “Our aim is to provide a service that is accessible to all students and this collaboration is therefore an attempt to offer a better service to all Matie students. We welcome any feedback that students may have about the service.” Feedback can be sent to Dunn-Coetzee at mdunn@sun. ac.za.

TESS VENGADAJELLUM

The First Things First Campaign will soon aim to test a 1 000 Stellenbosch University (SU) students and educate them on HIV literacy. The campaign was started by SU’s Equality Unit to test students’ HIV (Human Immuno Deficiency Virus) statuses. “It takes twenty minutes, it is free and painless,” said Malan Van der Walt of the Equality Unit. “On the Stellenbosch bucket list (in the Maties Diary) you will find things like ‘an acorn will fall on your head, or you need to get kissed in Die Laan’, but it is just as important to know your status.” The Unit prides itself in offering sensitised services for all sexual orientations and gender identities, and understanding the needs of the individual. Their walk-in policy is to be a convenient service to the student body. A few of their services include: aftercare support, counselling and obtaining antiretroviral medication. They also have psychologists, HIVspecialists and doctors on their staff. In terms of breaking the stigma attached to HIV and HIV testing, the Unit emphasises sensitisation and

offers peer education services for all statuses. “It is important to have strong knowledge of HIV regardless of your status as it poses a health challenge and affects us all. “The unit believes in shared humanity and empathy,” continued Van der Walt. Kaylon Weppleman, a BSc student said: “Society created taboos that were stemmed around HIV/AIDS. It can however be controlled and knowledge of your status will allow you to act accordingly.” As any person can be infected by HIV, all students are encouraged to be tested as an act of self-respect. Melissa Leonards, an Engineering student emphasised: “It is important to know your status, you can’t be ignorant when it comes to knowing your status and it is better to practise safe sex.” The campaign will take place form 13 - 16 March in the Neelsie.

BUDGET SPEECH

Rise in taxes: keeping your head above water SAVANNA BOSMAN

A pack of 20 cigarettes will soon cost you R1.06 more, while wine prices will increase with between 23c and 26c. Consumers will also soon need to budget for taxes on sugar sweetened beverages, over and above an increase in taxes for petrol and sin tax items (cigarettes and alcohol). According to the 2017 Budget People’s Guide, these taxes have been placed to boost the economic growth and pay back debts in order to reform the South African economy. The 2016 Budget, delivered by Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan, estimated that government would receive total tax revenue of R1.175 trillion during 2016/17. The October 2016 Medium Term Budget Policy Statement (MTBPS) noted that revenue collection would fall well below estimates. The MTBPS projected a revenue shortfall of R22.8 billion, which is now revised to R30.4 billion, meaning an estimated R1.144 trillion will be collected. This is the largest tax revenue shortfall relative to budgeted estimates since 2009/10. “In principle the increases are calculated in attempt to generate sufficient income to balance government expenditure and reduce any budget deficits,” said Rudie Nel, a lecturer in taxes at Stellenbosch University (SU).

Government proposes to implement a tax on sugary beverages, as soon as the necessary legislations are approved by Parliament and signed by the President. The tax will be administered through the Customs and Excise Act (1964). The National Treasury’s preliminary socioeconomic impact assessment shows a relatively small effect on job losses, most of which can be prevented if companies reformulate their products. The taxation of sugar sweetened drinks has been widely accepted across other countries, while it is still regarded in South Africa (SA) as a primary reason for the country’s high obesity rate. This implementation will attempt to decrease the consumption of sugar-sweetened drinks in SA. The Budget promises to utilise some of the revenue to support health promotion interventions as part of a strategy to fight non-communicable diseases. The 2017 increases on alcohol have become drastic as the prices of almost all alcohol will rise, with the targeted excise tax burdens for wine, beer and spirits set at 11%, 23% and 36% of the weighted average retail price, respectively. Since the implementation of the current excise regime in 2002, tax rates on most alcoholic beverages have consistently increased above inflation annually.

- Stort binne 2-5 minute. - Moenie jou koshuis se waterbesparende stortkoppe afhaal nie.

Match the style with the jol Shoe, shirt and hat choice are all indicators of where you will be found on a night out in Stellenbosch. As students in one of the largest and most well-known student towns, we are bound to adapt our styles when hanging out at certain places. We have all judged people on where they ‘kuier’ by their style. When going to clubs, you always know what you can expect visually, like flat caps at Terrace or tight skirts at Catwalk. In an effort to test this theory, Die Matie went for a night out on the town to capture these ensembles and prove that ‘jol styles’ are a thing.

Mits daar ’n groot verskeidenheid wyne is, word wyne by ’n proe in dié volgorde gedrink: vonkelwyn, ligte

Ek is baie trots daarop.

TJEERS! Jack Parow geniet ’n knertsie Parow Brandy. So ek was tot ’n mate teleurgesteld. As ek so daaraan dink, is ek eint-

Hulle sê mos altyd never meet your heroes. Ek is definitief aangenaam verras.

Band of ‘creative criminals’ LUKE SMITH

Sunset Sweatshop present themselves as an indie/folk band infused with Reggae and Marabi and even verging on Boeremusiek. They pride themselves on their unique combination of “killer keys” and “guitar coma-tomic riffs”. The band consists of five members, Ian Heyns (lead vocals and acoustic guitar), Rossouw Wentzel (lead & rhythm guitar), Victor Green (drums), Nick Forbes (keys and guitar) and Richard Dicks (bass guitar), all hailing from the Northern Suburbs of Cape Town.

Having recently formed the band in October 2016, the boys have already made a fair splash on the South African music scene with their debut single, ‘Move it’, a list of gigs lined up in Cape Town as well as shows at Stellenbosch’s very own Koeksisterfees on 4 March. They have also secured a spot at Splashy Fen, a music festival in KwaZulu-Natal. The five-piece band made up of a “creative kaleidoscope of criminals”, promises that their melodies will have you humming obsessively and make it impossible to keep your hips still.

Maar ek moet erken dit is altyd awkward as ek my eie lyrics vergeet. F*ck man, ek weet nie.

Ek dink dis die main ding: If you do something that you like you will never work a day in your life.

Yuvir Pillay, better known as Sketchy Bongo, is taking the South African music scene by storm. He has produced hits like ‘Back to the Beach’ and ‘Let You Know’, and plans to make 2017 his best year yet. Bongo took classical piano lessons when he was nine years old. At the age of thirteen he started listening to hip hop and house music. Bongo met Aewon Wolf and Kyle Deutsch when he was in high school and they started recording tracks together. “When we first started, we battled to get our tracks on the radio and to our audience. “The internet’s ability to share content worldwide makes it really easy for our fans to listen to our work and to get our names out there,” he explained. The ski-mask he wears when he is performing has become his trademark. Bongo was shooting a music video for one of his tracks and the ski-mask was a prop on set. He liked it so much that he decided to make it a part of his brand. “I’ve been wearing it at live shows

because it really gets people going and they dig it,” he said. With his 2017 debut album, Unmasked (which is available on iTunes), he decided to reveal his face on his CD artwork. “I come from Durban – it just gets too hot to wear the mask when I am not on stage.” Bongo has worked with some of South Africa’s biggest names in music. These include the likes of LCNVL, Jimmy Nevis and Shekhinah. His own tracks, as well as many that he has produced, are climbing radio charts locally and internationally. Bongo described the first time his work received airtime on radio as a paramount moment in his career. He does, however, remain modest when speaking about his success. “I don’t believe I’ve made it in any sense,” he commented. Bongo dreams of one day collaborating with Pharrel Williams. He also hinted that he might be collaborating with Beatenberg later this year. He confirmed that he will definitely be producing new tracks with LCNVL and Daniel Baron in 2017, as well as collaborating with Beatenberg.

NOT SO SKETCHY Yuvir revealed as Sketchy Bongo.

Pillay

He is positive about the space that the South African music industry is in. He explained that the way the industry is running now really gives independent and upcoming artists the opportunity to be heard. Perhaps this is why he started Wolfpack X, a record label he uses to sign new talent he identifies online and elsewhere. Bongo promises not to disappoint when it comes to live performances. “[My] shows will be crazy. You can expect all the hits and I will make the party happen,” he said. Bongo will be in Stellenbosch on 3 March at Nu’Bar.

EDITORIAL

editorial/redaksioneel SRC: WHY ARE THEY THERE, WHY SHOULD WE CARE? If the new SRC’s term will be anything like their venture thus far, we can assume that we will see a term of internal political struggle with no benefits for students. After the disorganised election process (that sidestepped a few parts of the student constitution), nine members were elected to represent the students of Stellenbosch University (SU). Only thing is, from the approximately 30 000 student that could vote, only 3 025 felt that voting for any of the candidates was worth 5 seconds of their time.

This was partly because students had received no communication with information about the candidates. All students may have seen campaign posters with smiling faces – hardly enough to make a sound judgement. So why are they there, and why should we care? It is difficult to officially answer this question, because no updates have been made to the university’s SRC webpage. In fact, the webpage still displays photos of the 2015/2016 SRC. So, let’s assume, from the

structure’s name that the SRC is supposed to represent us. The current SRC was elected by 3 025 students, which is around about 10% of current student population. That means 90% of students will not be represented by people they chose. Fair enough, if they didn’t vote, they can’t really complain. But it is also important to note the reason students are so detached from the whole process. If students don’t feel like they know the SRC (and that they can trust them) they’re not going to support

their decisions. What makes the situation even more complex is the utter confusion surrounding almost every step of the election process – candidates withdrawing, getting disqualified and resigning. Keeping track of whatever is going on is endlessly tiring, and no one needs that kind of admin in their lives. Although little positive outcome has been generated from the SRC, it’s nice to also see some good news. The new initiative from ER24 is one of the highlights. The initiative takes the safety

and wellbeing of students to heart and provides medical assistance anywhere in the country. This is truly forward-thinking, providing Stellenbosch students with an extra-large safety net to use in crisis situations. Here’s hoping that the initiative will be implemented effectively and be available to students wherever they find themselves in need of medical assistance. It’s actions like these that will actually benefit students, instead of the empty words the SRC has been wasting our time with.

We must question how malleable In particular, to what extent is the these convictions are, and to what Westernised notion of individual rights

enshrined within legal frameworks in Africa, where specific emphasis is placed on shared community and familial responsibilities? We should also encourage a discourse favouring championship of mental health, rather than focusing on policing the use of offensive and derogatory language. We must take ownership of the important role we can play, ensuring the effective use of healthcare resources and existing support structures. Early intervention improves outcomes and saves lives. Thus: how can greater societal awareness empower high-risk

individuals? Tertiary institutions have a unique role in promoting evidence-based and constructive dialogue on the subject of mental health. Mental illness is not only an individual problem, but also an interpersonal and societal one. Multidisciplinary input is imperative in promoting fair and equitable treatment. We as university students should engage in active reflection on the role each of us may play in combating stigmatisation and promoting informed academic discourse on these issues. We cannot ignore the societal and financial impact of mental illnesses. Universities must rise to the challenge by developing active educational opportunities to promote informed discourse surrounding mental illness. Students should ideally be incentivised to engage in such opportunities by the university or specific faculties, with emphasis placed on gaining a greater understanding of concepts central to mental health literacy. Institutes of higher learning should engage students in a long-term process of knowledge translation, and reward mental health championship. These projects should be

conducted in academic “safe zones”, where learning is respected as a social exercise. We should remain cognisant of the fact that opinions cannot be separated from the individuals who hold them. Despite our diversity and experience, we are united as a single student body, and should act as “hope activists” in that capacity. Tertiary institutions, including universities, therefore occupy a unique space in promoting constructive dialogue concerning mental health, with the goal of affording students the opportunity to become “hope activists”. However, all stakeholders should be actively involved in knowledge translation, aimed at defining the practical implications of theoretical constructs applicable to mental health advocacy. Only through frank, open dialogue aimed at addressing harmful beliefs and championing mental health as agents of hope, can we lay the foundation for optimal, fair and equitable healthcare access – and the protection of the most vulnerable amongst us.

*Luckhoff is a writing consultant at the Stellenbosch University Writing Lab. He also completed an MPath and HonsBSc (pathology).

The new SRC won’t change us As the recent SRC elections unravelled, I watched with the same amount of conviction as my fellow students campaigned for. I witnessed how candidates were elevated to demigod status, erroneously viewed as saviours coming to liberate Stellenbosch University (SU). The SRC elections reminded me of how I stood defeated in the corner of my high school courtyard. How I stared a few meters to where our head boy was standing, broken by the realisation that this man was found drunk the past weekend. I was broken by the realisation that this man failed to meet the expectation that I set. I was grade eight, he was grade 12; I was a blue eyed insecure boy looking for a leader to provide an example. Quickly my faith in leadership dissolved and I fondly decided to carve out my own destiny. If change is what I desired, I decided that the best solution is to create my own pathway to reach that goal. When I was elected onto the SRC of SU in 2015, I was reminded of how students and staff view the newly elected SRC members. I recall how a belief was born that real change would occur during our term, how an example would be set for a truly inclusive university. As Barack Obama promised a new dawn of American politics, we apparently represented the same lasting change. But, I would be the first to tell you that the SRC of 2015/16 failed to achieve that change. As we steamrolled ahead, I remember the faces of disappointed

JAMES DE VILLIERS students we left behind. Just as the 14-year-old James learnt standing in the school courtyard, leaders disappoint. Leaders are ultimately fallible, ultimately human. And so, this past week, I watched how new personality cults were established around the newly elected SRC members. How new students viewed these leaders as pioneers, guiding us into the promised land. And don’t get me wrong, we should celebrate the progress that has been made; we should celebrate the election of a black woman chairperson. And I sincerely congratulate Nomzamo with her appointment, but we shouldn’t be blinded from the fact that progress only comes from societal change. One leader cannot and will not alter the fibre of communities. What we need are individuals passionately choosing to take a stand. The most radical change Stellenbosch saw during my time at this university was, when a grass roots community formed (called Open Stellenbosch) that brought the institution to its knees in a place of uncomfortable introspection. It took thousands of voices to bring apartheid to an end, and it will take thousands more to make sure equality is achieved. Don’t lose focus due to a leader elected, but whatever you do, in every moment and every breath, continue to choose progress, continue to take a stand – and continue to lead. *De Villiers is a reporter for News24 and was the vice-chairperson of the SRC for the term 2015/2016.

If you have reason to celebrate, to meet, to launch or simply to get together in stunning surroundings, the perfect venue is waiting to welcome you and your guests – at the University Museum. Each of our five flexible spaces offers an affordable, highcharacter alternative to other commercial offerings in and around Stellenbosch. The historic front foyer with its double-volume ceiling and dramatic woodwork accommodates 150 guests in comfort and style. It is the ideal function room for a book launch, new product release or important media briefing. Seating can be arranged to suit the function and number of guests. The Lecture Theatre seats 40 attendees in classic lecture room style, with fixed desks and upright chairs, a podium, a lectern, a retractable projection screen and a data projector. The room is wired for stereo sound and cable microphone at the lectern. Internet is also available for clients from within the university. The Museum Courtyard is a novel venue idea. Perfect for al fresco functions such as a cocktail event, a traditional braai or a wine tasting. Can host up to 200 guests. The back Foyer is a functional, elongated space, highly recommended as a food preparation space or serving area for functions taking place in one of the other venues. It could also be put to great use as a mini-exhibition room. All of the venues offer a choice of audio-visual equipment, tables, chairs, podium and sound. The University Museum does not offer catering but recommends catering companies contracted to the University.

“Aangesien ek altyd baie kort was as gevolg van my onderbene se vertraagde groei, het die kunsbene my lengte vir my teruggegee.

Hy was eerstejaarsleier, tweedejaarsleier, HKlid en toe prim. Hy gaan ná sy studies sy loopbaan by FirstRand in Johannesburg begin, maar sê hy sal graag eendag ’n boek of twee wil skryf oor sy lewensverhaal.

Chad le Clos wen groot by Grand Prix EUGENIE GREGAN

CLOETESVILLE EQUESTRIANS Every term the Maties Equestrian Club invites children from Cloetesville to a morning of fun at the stables. Professor Sandra Swart (right) has run the horse riding club’s community project for several years. The children have fun while learning the fundamentals of horsemanship and absorbing humane education (how to treat animals and one’s fellow human beings with gentleness and understanding). The aim is to teach compassion and empathy for animals and respect for their environments. Volunteers from Maties Equestrian offer their time freely to help the children. The children’s outings are organised by Marli Vosloo. Her team of staunch volunteers assists her to take the children on outings or supervised play every Saturday. “The children are very restricted in the circumstances they come from and face various challenges. “The outings serve as a sustainable therapy for these children and we have seen drastic changes for the better in their behaviour after visits to Maties Equestrian Club,” said Vosloo.

Pryse begin by R55.

Wie is Steinhoff?

Atletiekbaan opgeknap NELRINE BEYERS
