According to the page’s administrator: “We receive quite a lot of posts like this during protests or other controversial events. “We just don’t post them, but

we have no way of knowing who submitted it.” The anonymous administrator added that Stellies Rage opened their eyes to how far Stellenbosch still has to go. “Whenever something happens that draws attention, be it a protest or whatever, we get an influx of horrible submissions. “When I started running the page in 2015, I would have probably identified us as sort of conservative in a way, but just seeing the things that people say and do, it’s really pushed me to agree with the Fees Must Fall movement, as well as Open Stellenbosch. “It also opened my eyes to how social media is in a sense an echo chamber because people surround themselves with others who have similar opinions, and anything that goes against that opinion is considered fake news or bigotry. “It just made me aware of how people get caught up with their own way of thinking, they don’t get exposed to different views.”

Online booking shuttles rejected Students using shuttles to commute between campus and Kayamandi, Cloetesville and Idas Valley are unhappy with the new online booking system, said Sifiso WakwaZungu. “We have already rejected this system before, and will reject it again,” said WakwaZungu. Reggy Kgatle, head of the student success portfolio of the Student Representative Council (SRC), approved the new online

booking system, but students are dissatisfied with the system. DASO chairperson, Lwando Nikamisa, agreed that the system is ineffective. “The system is not user friendly. It took me a long time to find the link and I don’t see how it will solve the problem.” In a recent email the SRC said they are aware of the “confusion”, and encouraged students to email sr@sun.ac.za with any queries.

tudents at Stellenbosch University (SU) have no reason to feel inferior because of the public image being portrayed of the university, said former finance minister Trevor Manuel. Manuel spoke at an event on 19 July at the University Museum, hosted by the Wimbledon and Vicmeyer clusters. He addressed issues of how students can be active citizens in society. One audience member asked Manuel for his take on the public image of SU, since there is the idea on other campuses that students will be racially discriminated against at SU. Manual answered that this was not the image of SU that he saw. “I’ve seen other universities and none of them have such diverse faculties as SU. There are no reasons for inferiority at SU,” said Manuel. Manuel added that there probably

Student togetherness and consciousness deal with these issues.” Manuel also addressed Fees Must Fall and the feasibility of free education at tertiary level. “Can the country afford it? I don’t know,” he said. Manuel expressed that he feels the rich should be paying for their own

education. Referring to free education, he said that “we should work hard to secure it, provided that we know it is directed at the poor”. He said that his own view of life is that he should pay for his own children’s education, but that he can’t expect the same from poor people. Talking about what went wrong during the Fees Must Fall protests last year, he said that students have to analyse what went wrong. “Who misbehaved? Call them out. If you are not prepared to do that, you won’t get progress on the issue.” Manuel also questioned the value of spending money on universities, referring to the amount of people that do not graduate or graduate late. “Why are we happy putting our money in a system that is clearly not working?” Manuel encouraged students to play an active role in solving the issues facing all spheres of society today.

’n Nuwe app kan nou help om jou veilig te hou. Die Stellenbosch-munisipaliteit is besig om Namola uit te toets, ’n app uit wat gebruik kan word om noodvoertuie in kennis te stel as die gebruiker van die app in gevaar is. “Wanneer die app se noodknoppie geaktiveer word, word die noodsein na die beheerkamer gestuur wat dan ’n noodvoertuig ontbied. Die aard van die nood sal bepaal of die polisie of munisipale wetstoepassers in kennis gestel en ontbied word,” het Mart-Marié Haasbroek, kommunikasiebeampte van die uitvoerende burgermeester, Gesie van Deventer, verduidelik. Luidens ’n mediaverklaring wat op 14 Junie 2017 deur die burgermeester uitgereik is, is die Namola-app sedert 15 Junie 2017 vir almal in Stellenbosch beskikbaar, wat beteken dat die gratisproeftydperk in Desember sal eindig. Die verklaring het ook gesê dat, soos die munisipaliteit voortgaan om gratis WiFi regoor die munisipale-area implementeer, dit sal help om die app selfs meer toeganklik vir alle inwoners in die area te maak.

he three students linked to the “Nazi-posters” (image below) which were spread on campus were found guilty of contravening the disciplinary code for students. The Central Disciplinary Committee (CDC) of Stellenbosch University (SU) found the three students guilty of contravening clauses 9.3 and 9.6 of the code. According to these clauses a student shall not act in a manner that is racist, unfairly d i s c r i m i n a t o r y, violent, grossly insulting, abusive or intimidating against any other person. A student shall also not disrupt, or potentially disrupt, the maintenance of order and discipline at the university. The CDC decided on sanctions against the students, which states that the students have to complete 100 hours of community service before the end of the first semester of 2018. The students must also complete a restorative assignment which should focus on “how to constructively engage on campus and address different narratives”. They must also use the assignment to “implement the ideas of constructive

engagement”. After they received the reasons for the CDC's decision, the students had five days to file a notice of appeal. Background: The students were linked to posters erected around campus in May, which resemble Nazi propaganda used to promote Adolf Hitler. The posters sparked outrage on campus, and a mass meeting was called to debate the issue. At the meeting, Dean Dart attempted to address students about the motivation behind them, but was prevented from addressing the crowd, despite chants to “let him speak”. Dart told Die Matie that the main idea of the posters was to “provoke people to start thinking introspectively, especially the people on the left”. “The posters are supposed to provoke the left to start re-analysing what they’ve become. We’ve become what we think we’re fighting,” said Dart. Several leaders present at the mass meeting in May expressed concern for the safety of Dart, and therefore prevented him from speaking.

ISR gives old Trapkarre a facelift TESS VENGADAJELLUM

The annual pedal car race, Trapkarre, will see students and competitors line the streets of Stellenbosch on Sunday 30 July. The Engineering Student Committee (ISR) made a joint decision at a previous MAD2 meeting to keep the event in the faculty, meaning that participation will only be open to engineering students. The race was initially an Engineering event until recently being a residence event during welcoming week. The routes are different for this year’s event and will see drivers race around faculty buildings and make use of the newly built facilities

around the Engineering faculty. “We’re still following the same formula and it’s still a Trapkarre race,” said Pieter de Villiers, head of Trapkarre, a sub-committee under the ISR. Industrial Engineering lecturer, prof André van der Merwe, reminisced about past Trapkarre events: “I think bringing the event back to the Engineering is really great. Originally it was a design, build and race initiative. In recent years, the MAD2 layout was just to race, and the engineering aspect of the Trapkarre was removed, which defeated the objective.” The event will start at 10:00 followed by a briefing and the teams will be able to plan after seeing the layout of the route.

The race is divided into two sections namely the sprints and endurance race. The winner will be based on a combined effort from the five teammates, who each have a turn to race around the track. In terms of the endurance race, the teams will be given two hours to compete and the team with the most laps within 2 hours will win the endurance race. The SPCA will be the charity supported by the event. Each team that enters will be required to donate three bags of dog food. “It’s going to be a good day, with good music and an event which gives one a break from the mundane,” said De Villiers.

After an absence of about two years, Student Parliament will soon be reinstated, said Student Representative Council (SRC) chairperson Nomzamo Ntombela. At a mass meeting last Wednesday, a new convenor was elected to oversee the election of a speaker for Parliament. Around 50 people were present

at the mass meeting, and from three candidates, Monde Petje was elected. Petje was the only candidate who refused to declare her political affiliations, saying “it has nothing to do with my work as election convenor”. None of the candidates nominated themselves to act as convenors before the meeting, and volunteered when the chairperson provided the opportunity. The meeting was ordered by Student Court during last term. The

court order comes after ex SRC candidate Inge Odendaal requested a review of the constitutionality of older Student Parliament decisions. Ntombela stated that the SRC communications officer, Kamva Somdyala, wrongly advertised that the mass meeting would commence at 18:00, one hour later than a communication from Ntombela stipulated. Ntombela presented the error as

the reason for the low attendance of the mass meeting. In an email sent to students on Monday, Ntombela promised to inform students on when the nominations for Student Parliament Speaker will be opened. The elected speaker will be under immediate obligation to call a parliament sitting, and Ntombela promised to communicate the time and date for the first sitting.

hile Mandela Day took place across the country, students and faculty members at Stellenbosch University’s Stellenbosch and Tygerberg campuses made it their own by opening their hearts to surrounding communities. The Toasties for Tummies project has become a well-known face in celebrating former president Nelson Mandela’s legacy by attempting to complete a minimum of 67 minutes of selfless deeds for others (one minute for every year Mandela devoted his life to the service of humanity). Groups of volunteers gathered on both campuses, butter knives at the ready, and spent several hours making sandwiches for those in need. “The hospital is our closest community. It is also the place of professional training for our students and it was a token of appreciation from our students towards the patients,” said Adri Brits, head of administration for the Tygerberg Campus’ student representative council (SRC). Brits explained that students become familiar with the social circumstances of most of their clients and therefore decided to hand out sandwiches. While they aimed to make about 1 200 sandwiches between 07:00 and 11:00 to handout to each patient in all outpatient departments in Tygerberg hospital, they later tallied about 1 400 sandwiches. Local radio station MFM92.6 also made their mark on Mandela Day when they partnered with the Stellenbosch Golden Key Society, Maties Community Service (MGD) and several volunteers to make 11 000 sandwiches in four hours. These were distributed to several NGOs. “Mandela Day is a great opportunity for South Africans to get together as a rainbow nation and help one another,” said Veronique Small, station manager at MFM. We should

however encourage one another to give back to our community every day. It doesn’t have to just be on Mandela Day, but a sandwich a day, an old blanket or even old clothes can go such a long way for those in need.” MFM also partnered with the Neelsie Student Centre’s Romans Pizza to give out 67 pizzas to the homeless people in Stellenbosch. Thereafter MFM staff members, along with staff from Stellenbrau brewing company, took part in a clean-up and recycling session in the Devon Valley area of Stellenbosch to end off a day of good deeds.

Sommige mense gaan so ver as om te sê dat dit die grootste uitvindsel ná die internet is. Die waarde van ’n enkele bitcoin is sowat R35 000 en ’n bitcoin kan tot in die agtste desimaal verdeel word, sodat mens selfs ’n enkele hoofpynpil daarmee kan koop. Soos wat die rand sent het, het bitcoin satoshi. Wat is bitcoin? Bitcoin is ’n geldeenheid wat oor die grense van lande aanvaar word. Anders as ander geldeenhede, neem bitcoin in waarde toe. Bitcoin is egter nie afhanklik van derde partye soos banke nie, daarom is transaksiekostes laag. Hoe is dit moontlik? Bitcoin maak van blockchain-tegnologie gebruik, wat beteken transak-

Maties struck gold after one of campus’ go-to coffee havens expanded all the way to the Van der Sterr building. Though it seems My Brew has always been an empire on the rise, the delicate art of brewing our favourite coffees was first the hobby of a businessman before it became the most coveted caffeine fix for students. There are many success stories that have given us hope that, despite what we’re studying, we can still be successful in different fields. The founder and distributor of My Brew, Freddie Kruger, is one such story. Not only has Kruger developed his very own coffee shop and brews, he recently opened the My Brew store in the Neelsie as well as Deja Brew in the Van der Sterr building to cater to the wider student population. Kruger, a coffee lover since the age of five, found himself in an office as a strategy manager at Bayer, a

pharmaceutical company, with no prior business experience after he’d acquired a Bsc in Agriculture. His solace was brewing coffee with popcorn machines, luring unsuspecting coworkers to an inevitable addiction. Not long after they started offering him money for his experimental brews, he bought an industrial coffee maker, quit his job and started providing his product to restaurants such as La Romantica from the confines of his garage. Now Kruger owns a shop and two stands, his value of quality having won him the Van der Sterr spot during an anonymous tender based on his mission statement and designs. He thoroughly believes that the quality of his products is more important than rapid expansion but stated that in an ideal world he would put a My Brew stand in every faculty. However, for now Kruger is focusing on his existing products, stores and stands, providing daily support to Maties students.

Sy besigheidsloopbaan het reeds op 16-jarige ouderdom in graad 11 afgeskop, toe hy algemene produkte begin verkoop het. “Ek het enige ding verkoop waarvoor daar ’n aanvraag was.” Hy het dit egter ’n stap verder geneem, deur dieselfde jaar CHPOhorlosies van Swede af in te voer om te verkoop. Die sukses van hierdie produkte het hom in staat gestel om na ander produkte uit te brei en tans borg hy talle bekendes, onder andere rugbyspelers. Ondanks die naam wat hy al opgebou het, is hy van mening dat die bekostigbaarheid van sy produkte steeds bo-aan sy prioriteitslys is. “Ek glo dat bekostigbaarheid ’n besigheid se belangrikste bemakingsmeganisme is en nie noodwendig ’n handelsnaam nie.” Sy onmiddellike fokus is om sy huidige produkte op te bou, voordat hy nuwe handelsname tot sy maatskappy byvoeg. Armand Aucamp: die beste boek in die boekklub Armand Aucamp is bekend vir sy rolle in Ballade vir ’n Enkeling en Die Boekklub. Dané Dooge het met hom gesels oor wat hom motiveer en sy toekoms as akteur.

Die Boekklub het onlangs weer op kykNET begin. Wat kan kykers hierdie seisoen verwag? Die tweede seisoen is ʼn wonderlike voortsetting van die eerste seisoen. Daar is ook ʼn paar nuwe kleurvolle en interessante karakters waarop kykers beslis verlief gaan raak en hulle sal dieper in die lewens van sommige van die oorspronklike karakters ingeweef word. Dink jy Lillie en Tom gaan ooit weer bymekaarkom, en sou jy hulle as soulmates beskryf? Ek dink daar is baie soulmates daar buite vir enige iemand, nie net een nie. Tom en Lillie moes definitief ’n pad saam stap, hulle albei moes iets van mekaar af leer, dus was hulle paaie bestem om te kruis. Of hulle nou nog bymekaar gaan opeindig, sal die kyker maar self moet sien. Wat is jou raad aan dramastudente? Doen dit vir die liefde van storievertel. As jy met liefde te werk gaan, sal dit in al jou werk deurskyn en dit is soos ʼn magneet vir enige gehoor - hulle sal jou passie saam met jou ervaar en daar is niks meer aantreklik as dit nie. goeie film en dan is ek weer reg om aan te gaan. Wat lê vir jou voor in die toekoms as akteur? Ek begin eersdaags aan ʼn nuwe reeks vir KykNET werk, KnapseKêrels, ’n aksie-komedie. Dit word in Januarie uitgereik. Ek sal ook graag ʼn paar maande ’n jaar in die buiteland wil gaan werk. Van die rolle wat jy al vertolk het, byvoorbeeld Jan van Riebeeck (Krotoa), Jacques Rynhard (Ballade vir ʼn Enkeling) en Tom (Die Boekklub), wie is volgens jou die meeste soos jy? Definitief Tom! Ek het nou al soveel tyd in sy skoene spandeer dat ek self nie altyd seker is waar wie begin en waar wie eindig nie. Ons is altwee koffie-obsessed-semi-hipsters... HA! Het jy ʼn droomrol? Huisdans Edition

Huisdans fever is slowly spreading through Stellenbosch. Never mind the bottomless wine and killer dance moves – the most exciting part of Huisdans is of course who wore what. Die Matie breaks down some of this season’s popular Huisdans trends. NINA FOUCHÉ

Anything velvet goes. This rich and luxe fabric was seen everywhere during the New York fashion week. Black is always a safe colour but if you’re feeling bold, opt for oxblood red or soft pink as seen on Jason Wu and Dion Lee’s runways. Velvet dresses, or even suits, ask for simple shoes and accessories with minimal attention being drawn away from the fabric. Simple necklines and A-line cuts allow for a classic and effortless look. The bigger the better. An influx of big, dramatic earrings has been seen in Zara and Lovisa stores. Forget minimalist touches, as more is more with this trend. Earrings are big, bold and audacious featuring different gemstones and feathers. If you’re feeling extra daring, follow Alexander McQueen’s advice and ignore all laws of symmetry and balance. Two earrings that are only similar in material, or wearing only one earring, has been noted on the 2017 S/S runways. Hands are adorned with similar extravagant rings. Why just wear one? It seems the classic Huisdans dress has been cut in half with some very trendy scissors. Think Hailey Baldwin and Laura

Osnes at this year’s Met Gala. Separate skirts with crop tops or bralettes are very popular this season. This trend allows for a lot of experimentation. Skirts are kneelength, A-line or voluminous and can range from floral, satin and, of course, velvet. Beautiful craft work such as embroidery or beading are popular for the top half of the attire. Classy toes. Men don’t usually have to worry as much when it comes to formal wear. Classic leather shoes were noticeable on most of 2017’s red carpets. Informal shoes like sneakers are always a risk, take Jason Sudeikis at this year’s Golden Globes for example. If you’re sick of the normal male Huisdans look, try experimenting with bow ties or pocket squares as Presley Gerber and Ryan Reynolds did at this year’s Met Gala.

Let’s not kid ourselves, none of us were ready to return to campus after lounging around at home for the past few weeks (if you weren’t part of the masses travelling Europe). It doesn’t matter how long the holidays are, they will never be long enough. Since we are all going to need some help getting back into the groove of constantly checking our Sun-email, worrying about predicate marks and never finding an unoccupied computer in the library, here are some tips on how to survive coming back to university. Don’t let silly season get you down. Thoroughly enjoy the free time you have before its gets snatched up by term tests and final essays, but don’t get so caught up in having a “golden week” that you end up with a nevergoing-to-class week instead. You’ll only make life for your future self very difficult.

Don’t leave everything for the week before exams start. If you have a lot of reading to do (pointing fingers at BA), get started on it now to avoid drowning in essays and prescribed books by the end of the semester.

“I’m not missing any classes this term”…does this sound familiar? It is a common known fact that every student experiences a sudden burst of motivation and determination after being confronted with the previous semester’s exam results. Make use of this academic rush (for as long as it lasts) to stay up to date with work before you start convincing yourself that those 8AM classes really aren’t necessary.

Get back into routine. As if getting up early after a long vacation is not tough enough already, winter is definitely not making it any easier. The faster you get back into the schedule that has proven to work best for you, the smoother your transition back into uni life will be. Whether this involves the amount of sleep you get, the food you eat or getting some exercise a few times a week, getting back on track as fast as possible will only benefit you. Before you know it, this semester will be something of the past and everyone will be packing up for the Christmas holidays, only to have these same problems when returning next year. The cycle is endless and cruel, and we just have to beat the blues.

Hulle het besluit dis tyd om hul eie musiek te maak en het vir Richard en Victor nadergetrek om saam met hulle te begin speel. So is Sunset Sweatshop in Oktober 2016 gevorm en Duke het onlangs by die groep aangesluit. Die groep se eerste vertoning was by die LlamaLand-fees in Pringlebaai, ’n nuwe inisiatief wat ook in 2016 begin het. Sedertdien het hulle by talle feeste en funksies opgetree. In Stellenbosch het hulle onder meer al by die Craft Beer-fees, Nemesia se Koeksisterfees en ook Bohemia vermaak verskaf. Al vyf lede van die groep hou hulself bedags met ander werk besig en só op die naam, Sunset Sweathop, besluit, aangesien hul musiek iets is wat hulle byna slegs saans na werk kan doen. Victor en Ian werk albei in familiebesighede. Rossouw is tans besig met sy honneurs in Afrikaans en Nederlands aan die Universiteit van Stellenbosch (US) en is ook ’n tutor in dié departement. Hulle beskou hul musiek as ’n uitlaatklep ná ’n lang dag by die werk en hoop om in die toekoms dit as ’n voltydse beroep te kan beoefen. Sunset Sweatshop het vroeër vanjaar hul eerste enkelsnit, “Move It”, tesame met ’n musiekvideo vrygestel wat deur Stephan Fourie en Anne Gonshorek verfilm en uitgereik

“Move It” het tot dusver baie goeie terugvoer ontvang en het vinnig opgang op PukFM asook Bok Radio se lyste van gewildste liedjies gemaak. Die musiekvideo is in die Kaap verfilm en volg die band deur die stad waar hulle saam met enigiemand dans wat lus is om by hulle aan te sluit. “Die video is realiteit. Dis hoe mense voel wanneer hulle die song luister,” sê Rossouw. Die volgende enkelsnit, “Rolling with the punches”, is reeds opgeneem en word in September uitgereik. Volgens die groep is dié snit heeltemal anders as die Afrika-indie-styl van hul eerste liedjie. “Dis ’n eighties rock and roll. Mense wat van ‘Move It’ gehou het, gaan verwag dat ons dieselfde tipe ding gaan doen, so dit gaan hulle bietjie skok. Dan kry ons weer ’n ander tipe crowd in,” sê Ian. ’n Demosnit, “Headlights” is ook intussen op SoundCloud vrygestel vir aanhangers wat nie tot September kan wag nie. Dit is moeilik om Sunset Sweatshop as ’n spesifieke genre te klassifiseer aangesien hulle so ’n wye verskeidenheid musiek speel. “Ons speel musiek wat lekker is en as dit ’n catchy tune het, maak dit nie eintlik saak watter genre dit is nie. Ons open met rock and roll dat die mense skrik en dan gee ons vir hulle iets sagter. Ons speel wat ons voel.” Al is hul musiek hoofsaaklik Engels, is die groep baie divers en het hulle ook ’n Afrikaanse liedjie wat vir

Afrikaanse gehore gespeel word. Daar is selfs ’n bietjie Xhosa in een van hul ander liedjies. Die groep het opgelet dat mense van alle ouderdomme die musiek by vertonings geniet. Volgens die groep kan “jou mahulle dit kom kyk. Jou ouma kan dit kom kyk. Jy kan jou kind saambring. En is daar iets vir almal.” Sunset Sweatshop se grootste optrede tot op hede was by die Splashy Fen-musiekfees in KwaZulu-Natal. Dis die oudste musiekfees in SuidAfrika en was ook een van die groep se hoogtepunte sedert hulle saam begin optree het. Hulle is ook in Januarie 2018 by die 28ste Up The Creek-musiekfees in Swellendam te sien, waar onder andere

Indie electropop meets the smooth harmonies of second year electronic engineering student, Pierre Stemmett. With a debut EP, Outset, released in January, Stemmett is doing more with his melodic vocals than just starring in the Simonsberg sêr. From the acoustic beats in ‘No Sweat’ to the deeper and darker vibes in ‘Ghost Club’, which are also Stemmett’s two favourite songs on the EP, it is easy to say that we can expect big things from this talented artist and vocalist. According to Stemmett, he is still experimenting with different sounds, and his upcoming album is going to be more indie and weird. This album is set to be released later this year. He said he draws much of his inspiration for his original songs from short art films by using concepts or singing from the perspectives of the characters.

Ons het met Pierre Greeff en Hunter Kennedy gesels oor die nuwe album, die storie agter die titel en wat die toekoms vir die band inhou. Soos alle kunstenaars in die vermaaklikheidsbedryf, het die band baie verander sedert die dae van “Klein Tambotieboom”. Die techno-atmosfeer van hulle eerste album is terug, maar met lirieke wat meer met hulle laaste album, “Ja Nee Lekker”, ooreenstem. OKAY! bevat verskeie collaborations met onder andere Adriaan Brand en Jannie Hannepoot

you’ll reap the rewards. “It’s like everything: the factor that makes it work better is the extra effort and being willing to take that risk, and on this tour, it’s all really paid off,” he added. Johannesburg is next on the itinerary for PHFAT’s Keep You Safe tour, before concluding at Mystic Boer in Potchefstroom.

Lucy Kruger and The Lost Boys colab LUKE SMITH

If you’re looking to get lost in a sea of guitars accompanied by the intimacy of a single voice, look no further: Lucy Kruger and The Lost Boys has you covered. The band, which was formed five years ago, is a collaboration between one half of the Cape Town psychedelic rock band Medicine Boy (a band made up of Lucy Kruger and Andre Leo), and The Lost Boys, Kruger’s band that is slowly growing more independent and making a name for themselves. Kruger decided to form The Lost Boys after meeting Lucas Swart (guitar/vocals of The Lost Boys) through family friends, collaborating on a self named EP in 2014, as well as releasing another album in 2017 titled Summer’s Not That Simple. Kruger provides a raw acoustic

a very calm and relaxing scene with echoing guitars and down tempo riffs, creating a very psychedelic sound. Their most recent album (Summer’s Not That Simple) was released by Permanent Record on 15 May, a small independent vinyl based record company in Cape Town. Lucy Kruger and The Lost Boys only have a handful of shows left for this year, including one on 8 August (Women’s Day) at Bobs District 6 in Cape Town. They are also playing on 6 October at Rocking The Daisies. Kruger will soon return to work on a new and upcoming Medicine Boy album, which means Lucy Kruger and The Lost Boys will be taking a break. However, they are sure to have a busy time ahead of them upon Kruger’s return and are certainly a band worth keeping your eye on.

editorial/redaksioneel ALL TALK AND NO ACTION “We will continue to have conversations about the matter in the hope of finding more to solutions.” This sentence, and specifically the buzz word “conversation”, is continuously popping up in press releases, vision and mission statements, as well as reports. It is often stated that “more conversations should be held”, whether it be about race relations, rape culture or crime. These conversations are held to give people with differing stances the opportunity to share

their viewpoints and potentially bridge a communication gap, in the hope of achieving a better understanding of another party’s situation and views. With bigger issues the aim is to get input from all relevant parties and hopefully reach a constructive solution. Die Matie fully supports this. We agree that constructive conversations play a vital role in bringing us closer to solutions as we try our best to create meaningful debates and provide a platform for them to play themselves out. The problem, however, exists

when these conversations become all talk and no action. Conversations about certain issues on campus are being held with no real effect. Which begs the question: surely if one solution is failing it is our responsibility to at least try something new? Moreover, people are not given a fair opportunity to raise their opinion, with very little tolerance for opinions differing from those of an aggressive pressure group. Die Matie witnessed a few instances on the Rooiplein and in mass meetings where not

every student was given an equal opportunity to speak. Throwing in a phrase about conversations has become a convenient distraction (and often excuse) instead of actively dealing with the issue at hand. Using the word creates the illusion that progress is being made when actually it is only communication without the necessary action and physical results. Like mentioned before, conversations can be very helpful and meaningful in promoting mutual understanding amongst

groups with different views, but it is meaningless if you talk in circles and refuse to open your mind to different ways of thinking and seeing the world. This being said, we should be very careful that we don’t get so drawn into conversation that we forget the real reason they are being held in the first place, preventing us from finding concrete solutions and moving on to other issues. stories aan Stellenbosch te kom oorvertel. En dan sommer al die Franse, Britse en Amerikaanse staaltjies ook. Daar gebeur mos maar niks op ons kampus nie. Dis wel vir Gorrel lekker om so ’n stoute profile pic bo-aan elke storie te sien, net so ingeval Gorrel die skrywer(s)? dalk wil follow. Gorrel sou dit ook nogal oorweeg om vir hulle te skryf, aangesien Gorrel ’n geldjie kan verdien. Maar Gorrel is eintlik baie gelukkig by Die Matie, al is hier maar ’n tekort aan familielede met bultende beursies. HOOR JY DIE GELUIDE Dis weer sêr-seisoen en Gorrel geniet dit vreeslik om te sien hoe al die koshuise mekaar selfs al voor die kompetisie probeer upstage. Aristea het selfs ’n bietjie

Spoegwolf by hul repertorium ingewerk. Baie slim en strategies, aangesien Gorrel se gunsteling Danie help judge. Gorrel hoop regtig hulle charms werk, want Gorrel het al probeer, maar hy wou nie vir Gorrel in Aandklas raaksien nie.

STORTGORDYNE Soos Gorrel reeds genoem het, was die eerste dag baie interessant. Een ding wat daartoe bygedra het, is die afwesigheid van die papierdun, byna deurskynende stortgordyne by Gorrel se huis. Gorrel kan nie uitpluis waarom iemand sal dink die eerste aand is die beste tyd om die goed te was nie. Gorrel het toe maar varkie-aand gehou en gehoop niemand vra vrae nie.

Perspektiewe Verdedig en baklei moenie ons default set ting wees

Narratief van #versoening nodig vir vooruitgang BOUWER BOSCH

owat twee maande gelede het ek met ’n #Versoening-projek begin waar ek met verskillende mense uit verskillende agtergronde oor die verlede, en spesifiek apartheid, gesels. My gesprek begin waar ek jammer sê vir die verlede en hoe ek voel dat die emosionele skade van die apartheidsisteem steeds vandag ’n invloed op ons almal se lewens het. Die rede hoekom ek hierdie gesprekke doen, is omdat ek voel ons sit vandag met die onmeetbare skade van daai tyd en as mens dit nie gaan aanspreek of ’n veilige plek gaan skep waar mense oor hulle seer en ervaringe kan gesels oor die verlede nie, gaan die wonde nooit gesond word nie. Ek doen dit ook dat ons as witmense kan probeer verstaan en iemand anders uithoor oor hulle verlede en hoe dit moes wees om nie ’n wit persoon te wees nie. Ek voel ons as Suid-Afrikaners praat te veel van mekaar en te min mét mekaar. Wat help dit ons is ’n reënboognasie, maar die blou mag nie met die rooi praat oor hoe hy voel nie? Die feit dat die woord “apartheid” nog weekliks in rubrieke of perskonferensie opduik, 23 jaar nadat dit afgeskaf is, sê vir my dat daar nog nie regtig met die verlede gedeal is nie en dat dit geen skade kan doen om mekaar uit te hoor nie. Die Waarheids- en-Versoeningskommissie het ’n ongelooflike werk gedoen gedurende die twee jaar wat dit bestaan het, maar hoe wil jy meer as 50 jaar se onregverdigheid en hartseer in twee jaar probeer genees? Genesing vat tyd en ons sit vandag met

miljoene mense se onmeetbare wonde van apartheid waaraan daar nooit aandag gegee is nie. In Suid-Afrika word ons ongelooflik gedryf deur narratiewe. Die woord “wit monopolie kapitaal” het nie eens bestaan in ons land se woordeskat voordat Bell Pottinger dit in ’n persverklaring gesit het nie. “Volksmoord” is ’n ander narratief wat sekere mense dryf en vrees in mense se harte plaas. “Black first land first” is deesdae ’n groot narratief in die media en hierdie narratiewe beïnvloed hoe jy dink en hoe jy optree teenoor ander. Dit beïnvloed die klimaat onder die mense in ons land. Die gesprek gaan nie oor of die narratiewe meriete het nie, want elkeen het waarde. Dit gaan oor hoe groot impak dit op ons land se denke het. Narratiewe is als en ek bevind myself op 33-jarige ouderdom dat ek klomp van die narratiewe wat ek geleer is as kind moet afleer. Om goed af te leer is net so belangrik soos om nuwe goed te leer. Wat my die meeste fassineer is nadat ek die #Versoening-gesprekke begin het, is dat soveel mense gekant is teen om in liefde teenoor iemand te sit en hulle uit te hoor. Ons is so gewoond aan verdedig en baklei dat dit ons default setting geraak het en wanneer iets dan in liefde gedoen word en wanneer dit nie oor jou gaan nie, dan verstaan mense dit nie. Dit laat my wonder of sommiges regtig ’n beter land soek. ’n Hartseer deel van die gesprekke is die hoeveelheid Christene wat nie kan insien dat Jesus juis in die versoeningsbesigheid is nie. Dit laat my wonder of die NG Kerk nie maar nogsteeds slaag in hulle manier van dink

oor die verlede nie. Kerke het seker die grootste impak van alle instansies in ons samelewing se denke, maar ek voel kerke is te bang om die verlede aan te pak om mense gesond te kry, want dis ongemaklik en nie flashy nie. Ons kan nie wil sê “God is liefde” en dan in dieselfde asem sê “nie die tipe liefde wat jou toelaat om oor die hartseer verlede met jou medemens gesels” nie. Ek weet kerke is stukkend omdat dit deur stukkende mense soos ek en jy bestuur word, maar dis juis dit, om te erken jy is stukkend het waarde. Om iemand uit te hoor wat ook stukkend is, het baie waarde en ek voel daar is miljoene mense in ons land wat gehoor moet word. Omdat narratiewe juis so ’n ongelooflike groot impak in ons samelewing het, voel ek ons moet harder probeer om nuwes op die tafel sit. Narratiewe wat te doen het met liefde, begrip, vergifnis, luister. As ons nuwe resultate in Suid-Afrika soek, gaan ons met nuwe aanslae moet kom en ek dink ons kan nou maar eerlik vir mekaar sê dat dit nie van ons huidige politieke leiers gaan kom nie. Dit gaan van my en jou af kom om anders te begin dink en anders te begin optree rondom ons verlede en ons toekoms. NS - FW de Klerk het nooit vir witmense gesê hulle moet jammer sê vir apartheid nie, maar tog het Nelson Mandela vir swartmense gesê hulle moet vergewe, en hulle het. Alcohol abuse at university - not just a male problem Alcohol has a rich history of use, abuse, glorification and prohibition. Literature is replete with reference to alcohol use in diverse cultural contexts, and indeed, our societal relationship with ethanol is complex and multifaceted. However, across demographic milieus, the stock character of the “town drunkard” is, rather curiously, almost exclusively male, to the point of cliché. But what about women, specifically, female students? Indeed, the use of alcohol for behavioural and emotional self-regulation is more common in men, who more often exhibit tendencies of aggressiveness and confrontation when under the influence. It is, however, both inaccurate and naive to consider that the female gender “protects” one against the adverse consequences of alcohol misuse on physical health and social wellbeing. In fact, more women suffer from the adverse effects of alcohol abuse compared to men. Women may also develop associated illnesses, includ-

ing heart and liver disease, at an earlier stage. Where the partner abuses alcohol, women are of course also at a higher risk of physical and sexual abuse. Especially in a wine-producing environment, we need to question the role that gender plays in how we think about alcohol in the context of health and societal wellbeing. We also need to think seriously about the relationship between alcohol intake, depression risk, and academic performance in gender-specific terms. It is known that, in adults, major depression and alcoholism often cooccur as a dual diagnosis. On the one hand, depression is a well-recognised risk factor for alcohol misuse, while on the other, alcohol use may either mask or exacerbate symptoms of depression. In this setting, effective antidepressant treatment may help curb abnormal drinking habits in people with depression. It is therefore important to consider the effects of these treatments on response and remission in terms of

gender. At university, assimilation into a new learning environment inevitably involves exposure to the so-called “alcohol culture” prevalent at tertiary

institutions. University students may expose themselves to a range of academic, social and emotional problems resulting either directly or indirectly from alcohol misuse. Alcohol abuse is also implicated in cyber-bullying as well as a risk factor for depression among female students. Female students, in particular, are urged to discuss the influence of the so-called drinking culture on their wellbeing and academic success at university. Through exploring and understanding female students’ experiences of alcohol misuse in the university context, effective screening tools, prevention programmes and intervention strategies can be developed to help students struggling with the consequences of inappropriate alcohol use. All academic stakeholders should be cognisant of the associated harms alcohol misuse may pose to students acclimatising into the university experience and its associated alcohol culture. Alcohol is a tempting escape to

those struggling with university integration, or who are affected by mental illnesses, including depression and certain anxiety disorders. University students may not even know that their individual risk for detrimental effects associated with alcohol misuse may be high. All of us should be cognisant of how we can use our own experiences and inquire into those of others, to inform a positive, transformational social dialogue towards better acclimatisation into the university experience. armen Crous is ’n 21-jarige student in BA Geesteswetenskappe by die Universiteit Stellenbosch. Met haar spierwit, blonde hare, groot blou oë en vietse lyfie lyk haar Instagram-lewe byna perfek. Op die platform deel sy egter ook ’n ander aspek van haar lewe: sy ly aan die skaars siekte, sistiese fibrose. Sistiese fibrose (SF) is ’n genetiese toestand wat veroorsaak dat ’n persoon se natuurlike soutbalans versteur is. Lyers skei te veel van hulle natuurlike natriumchloried uit, en dit veroorsaak dat al die slym in hulle liggame taai en dik raak. Die slym kom normaalweg oral in die longe en spysverteringskanaal voor, maar in SF-lyers se geval lei dit tot die verstopping van alle lugweë wat chroniese infeksies in die longe en wanvoeding van die liggaam tot gevolg het. Die lewensverwagting van mense met SF is ongeveer 40 jaar, maar Carmen is op ’n missie om dié feit verkeerd te bewys. Sy is op die ouderdom van 13 maande gediagnoseer en lewe al meer as 20 jaar met die skaars siekte. Sy vertel dat sy as pasgebore baba die heeltyd siek was en die dokters het met hulle hande in hulle hare gesit. Kort ná haar eerste verjaarsdag, toe sy besig was met behandeling vir longontsteking, het Carmen ophou asemhaal. Die familie se huishulp, Martha, wat ’n groot rol in die familie en die drie sussies se lewe speel, het Carmen se lewe gered deur die dik slym wat haar versmoor het uit haar keel te verwyder. Eers na 13 maande se gesukkel met chroniese longontsteking en bronchitis, is klein Carmen gediagnoseer met sistiese fibrose. Vir die eerste sewe jaar van haar lewe het die Crous-familie in Pretoria gebly. Hoewel Carmen gereeld siek was, was sy gelukkig. Toe sy sewe was het die dokter tydens ’n opvolgafspraak ontdek dat haar longfunksie skielik begin daal het. Dis toe dat haar ouers besluit het, op die aanbeveling van verskeie dokters en studies, om Kaap toe trek, waar die lugkwaliteit beter en skoner is.

Carmen begin elke oggend met ’n fisioterapie-sessie van ’n uur lank waarin haar rug en bors gemasseer en geklop word om die slym los te maak. Elke aand is nog so ’n sessie nodig. Deur die dag moet sy ook vyf dosisse antibiotika neem. Carmen het nooit teruggestaan vir fisiese uitdagings nie en by die Laerskool de Hoop in SomersetWes het sy aan ’n verskeidenheid sportsoorte deelgeneem. “Toe ek uitgevind het nog iemand in my skool het SF, was ek so opgewonde om haar te ontmoet. Ek was graad drie en sy was twee jaar ouer. Ek en Linda was toe onafskeidbaar.” Wat hulle verhouding egter kompliseer, is dat hulle nooit vir lang tye naby aan mekaar mag wees nie. Mense met SF se toestand word vererger deur bakterieë wat in die dik slym groei, en al word die draer van die bakterieë bestand daarteen, is ander mense met SF nie noodwendig bestand teen daardie baie spesifieke bakterieë (bugs, soos Carmen dit noem) nie. Sy en Linda kan dus baie gevaarlike bakterieë vir mekaar oordra. Hulle dra maskers as hulle bymekaar is, vermy

direkte velkontak en moet verkieslik omtrent twee meter van mekaar bly. “Ons gee wel nogsteeds vir mekaar baie drukkies. Sy is soos ’n sussie vir my.” Carmen se gesondheid het altyd gewissel, maar in graad nege en elf was haar gesondheid baie swak. In graad elf is sy ses keer gehospitaliseer vir drie weke op ’n slag, en dit het haar punte baie beïnvloed. “Maar dit was definitief deel van God se plan, want dit het my voorberei vir wat ek eendag sou studeer.” Sy sê haar geloof is haar anker en sy hou nog altyd aan haar sterk verhouding met die Here vas. “Die een ding van SF wat great is, is dat ek al van kleins af die groter prentjie sien en verder gedink het. Ek het nie baklei oor wie se Barbie die mooiste is nie,” vertel sy en lag. “Jy sal verbaas wees oor wat ’n vyfjarige verstaan. Jy weet jou lewe is korter as ander s’n en ek het die klein goedjies meer waardeer.” Toe sy keuring vir universiteit gekry het, was Carmen onmiddellik dankbaar dat sy die geleentheid gaan hê om te kan studeer en universiteit te kan ervaar.

“In graad nege het ek gedink: gaan ek ooit matriek kry? In matriek het ek gedink: gaan ek ooit kan universiteit toe gaan? Nou kry ek hierdie jaar al my graad!” Sy vertel van haar drome en haar toekoms en haar gesig helder op as sy praat oor hoe sy ’n familie van haar eie wil hê en die eienaar van ’n klein koffiewinkel gaan word. Carmen se kêrel, Fourie Moller, is al drie jaar een van haar grootste ondersteuners deur die goeie en slegte tye. Fourie is Linda se nefie en die twee is deur Linda aan mekaar voorgestel. Carmen sê haar mense en haar positiwiteit dra haar deur die moeilike stadiums van die siekte. “As mens psigologies gesond en gelukkig is, dan gaan dit outomaties beter met jou fisiese gesondheid.” Volgens Carmen is haar gesondheid ook vanjaar sover die beste. “Ek was reeds drie keer hierdie jaar in die hospitaal, maar al die goeie goed wat om my gebeur het, het dit soveel minder erg gemaak!” Carmen se ondersteuningsnetwerk strek tot anderkant die wêreld, met ’n groeiende platform van mense met SF wat mekaar ondersteun en raadgee.

Deur middel van haar Instagram-blad het meer en meer haar genader en een van haar grootste drome is nou om haar goeie vriendin met SF wat in Amerika bly, te ontmoet. “Ek vind my siekte baie interessant en ek hou daarvan om met mense daaroor te praat. Ek was nog nooit skaam daaroor nie. Ek het meer oor my SF begin post, en meer SF mense het my begin message en ek het klomp verhoudings begin bou. Dit was só lekker.” Carmen het vanjaar 21 geword en sy het besluit dat sy dié mylpaal gaan vier en dit haar SF-bewusmakingsjaar gaan maak. Met die hulp van haar sussie het sy ’n veldtog begin om fondse in te samel vir ’n Afflovest, ’n spesiale “baadjie” wat sy kan aantrek wat op haar bors vibreer om die slym los te maak. Hierdie toestel kan mense met SF se longfunksie tot en met 16 persent verbeter. Met die toestel sal Carmen se fisioterapiesessies ook wegval. ’n Afflovest kos ’n klein fortuin en word boonop nie in Suid-Afrika vervaardig nie. Haar sussie het toe vir haar ’n webtuiste geskep waar mense direk tot haar veldtog kan bydra en meer kan leer oor haar siekte. Binne ’n tydperk van ses maande het sy al R90 000 van R200 000 bymekaar gemaak en groter maatskappye soos Adidas is ook betrokke. Carmen is verbaas oor hoe sosiale media haar lewe beïnvloed het. “Die ondersteuning het my sommer meer gemotiveer om harder te werk aan my gesondheid.” Carmen laat nie toe dat haar siekte haar terughou nie en haar lus vir die lewe en optimistiese gees is merkwaardig. “SF het my geleer om elke dag voluit te lewe, maar dit het my dalk meer geleer om die alledaagse seëninge in my lewe ten volle te waardeer.”

Maties claim USSA ANDRÉ HUISAMEN

hile most students were enjoying some time off during the holidays, Maties Rugby went on to claim their first USSA title after beating NWU Pukke in the final, 19-13. The annual USSA games took place at WITS university in Johannesburg. Flanker, Johan van Niekerk, was the star player on the day, crossing the try line twice, with Paul de Wet also scoring. Tiaan Swanepoel was successful with two of the conversions as Maties capped off a strong week and competition in a cold Johannesburg. Lock, Ian Groenewald, said the USSA title has always been a competition where the players didn’t perform to the best of their abilities. “We have lost in the final and semifinal in the past, but this time everything just worked from the beginning. We had strong performances against strong teams but it was good to see the commitment of the players during that week, especially the younger ones,” said Groenewald. Centre, Braam Venter, captained the side in place of regular captain, Craig Barry, who had been playing for the Western Province side in the Supersport Challenge since the end of the

Varsity Cup competition. Along with other regular Matie players like Janco Venter, Craig Corbett and Niel Oelofse, Maties stood a good chance of going all the way and they started strong against CPUT. It was raining tries in that first game as Maties claimed a massive 84-7 victory over their rivals from Bloemfontein. That set Maties up for a semi-final clash with another Bloemfontein opposition in Shimlas. They too proved to be too weak for Maties. Another try fest sent Maties to the final with another comprehensive victory of 50-7. According to Groenewald, the second game was a big boost of confidence and clear sign that Maties could clinch the title against Pukke in the final. “We were very convincing in the first two games, but especially the one over Shimlas, who are generally

Lauren Billson, 22-year old Matie and Accounting honours student, is to represent South Africa at the Festival of Lifesaving Championships, held in Durban this August, as part of the Commonwealth team. Billson started swimming competitively at age eight, starting lifesaving at age eleven, before proceeding to surf lifesaving. She included still water lifesaving after starting university. She grew up in Port Elizabeth where she attended Collegiate Girls High School. She chose to study in Stellenbosch to continue with her sport, as the Maties swimming team allows her to do. Currently busy with her honours degree in Accounting, she signed with the accounting firm KPMG, to complete her articles in 2018. Billson says she has always been juggling school, sport and extramurals. “The only way this is possible is with good time management, using every hour of my day productively. Some sacrifices have to be made to ensure I get everything done, but I’ve always preferred being busy.” This is not the first time she will be representing her country at a sports event. She attended the two-yearly Lifesaving World Championships in 2016. This event is a combination of still water and surf lifesaving events, respectively held in a swimming pool and on a beach. The Commonwealth Games this August only includes still water lifesaving. “I am very privileged to represent my country in these events.” In preparation for the Commonwealth Games, she is training 10 times a week, including eight swimming sessions and two gym sessions. She uses some of the swimming sessions to work on her

lifesaving techniques. Billson is also part of the Maties Swimming Club. “The Maties swimming coaches are very accommodating when it comes to my lifesaving training.” According to Billson, the biggest challenge in her sports life has been not having a still water coach close by. “Most of the skills and techniques I have learned, have been gained through personal experience, video analysis, and correspondence with my coaches and sister in Durban.” She says that although it is challenging to do this by herself, it has pushed her harder to succeed. She describes her eldest sister, Carmel, as her biggest sports inspiration on a South African level. Carmel is the captain of the South African women’s lifesaving team. She also considers the Australian women’s captain, Pamela Henry, to be a big inspiration. “I was privileged enough to get to train with her when she did a year of exchange at Stellenbosch University.” Billson dreams of representing South Africa at the International Surf Lifesaving Championships held in New Zealand later this year. Another dream is to participate in the World Lifesaving Championships in 2018. The Commonwealth Games will be held at Kings Park in Durban from 1012 August this year.

We were dominant up front and the backs were enjoying some good running rugby, so we headed into the final on a massive high but we knew it was going to be tough against Pukke,” said Groenewald. When the final whistle blew it was more a sense of relief after Maties missed out in the three previous finals they played at national level since the start of 2016. “We always try to prepare as effectively as possible, so to win a championship after we lost in the last two Varsity Cup finals, as well as in last year’s USSA final, felt great. There was some renewed energy on this tour and I think that might have given us an extra boost to win the title.”

aties canoeist Alan Houston placed fifth overall at one of the world’s toughest ultra canoe marathons. “Long, low, cold, but it was good fun” is how Houston described his first-ever Berg River Canoe Marathon. The four-day classic took place from 12-15 July, spanning over 210 km of the Berg River from Paarl to Veldrif. Five Matie canoeists took on the Berg River Canoe Marathon: Houston, Evan Knight, Michael Jamieson, Brandon Macleod and Carlisle Hartman. Four of the five finished. Macleod tore his bicep on the last day. Ten nonstudent club members also finished the marathon. With the province still in the firm grips of the worst drought in a century, the Berg River’s water levels were extremely low, making the race tougher than normal. “I think it’s probably the hardest race you can do, especially with the

conditions we had. The river was low,” said Knight, chair of the Maties Canoe Club. Due to these conditions, the route was changed. “They took 15 km off day one and 15 km off day two,” Knight explained. The wintery weather conditions complicated the race even more, especially on day four. “On the last day, there was a headwind and waves. Eventually I was so tired I just went into the reeds and sat there for like five minutes, and then I came out and paddled again,” Knight said. The team members all agree that having someone to support them along the way is key. “I don’t think you can actually finish it without a second,” Houston said. A second is the person who drives the paddler’s car from the start to the finish, and feeds him/her bananas and energy bars along the way. When asked whether they would do the marathon again, it was clear that these paddlers would not be scared off easily.

“We were joking about it, saying we’re not making any solid commitments yet, but I think we’ll all do it again at some stage,” Knight said. “I think we have to do one where there’s more water.” Hungarian paddler and previous world championships winner Adrián Boros won the Berg. He was one of the strong contingent international stars who participated in the marathon. Maties Canoe Club Next up for the club is the Breede River Marathon, and then the big one: The Fish River Canoe Marathon. The Fish River Canoe Marathon also serves as the University Sports South Africa (USSA) canoeing championships. “It’s a healthy lifestyle. It’s enjoyable to be fit and strong. The people are great: we’re a tight knit little community. Then there’s the fun of it, going places and seeing great scenery. You also challenge yourself against other people,” said Houston. Sauer-stryd duur voort JEAN DE WET

Die tweede semester se Sauer-rugby is volstoom aan die gang en drie rondes is al in die eerste week en ’n half gespeel. In wat ’n moeilike eerste ronde vir die spelers na ’n lang breek moes wees, het die rugby geensins teleurgestel nie. Die naelbytkragmeting was tussen Eendrag en Huis Marais. Eendrag het net-net met 13-12 as oorwinnaars uit die stryd getree. Medies het ook teen alle verwagtings ’n uitstekende poging aangewend om met 27-24 teen die PSO Barbarians te verloor. Die eerste Maandag se kragmetings was nie net belangrik om die roes na die vakansie af te skud nie, maar dit was ook ’n gulde geleentheid om aan hul spel te skaaf voor die uiters belangrike derbies Vrydag aangebreek het. Sauer-derbies is ’n spesiale affêre en dit was verlede week die derbies tussen Dagbreek en Wilgenhof, asook Huis Marais en Huis Visser wat vele toeskouers vermaak het.

Dagbreek en Huis Marais het in hul onderskeie kragmetings met die louere weggestap. Afgesien van die derbies, was die ander interessante resultaat die gelykopuitslag tussen Eendrag en Elsenburg. Dit was die eerste wedstryd van die seisoen waarin Elsenburg nie die knoop kon deurhaak nie. Hulle het tot dusver baie indrukwekkend gelyk en is beslis een van die sterk aanspraakmakers. Huis Marais was Maandag gelukkig toe Majuba onttrek het en sodoende vier punte op ’n skinkbord aan hulle oorhandig het. Die groot wedstryd van die dag was tussen die twee onoorwonne spanne, Dagbreek en Elsenburg, waarin Dagbreek met 31-24 geseëvier het. Huis Visser het goed teruggekeer ná hul teleurstellende derby en gesorg vir ’n opskudding deur die PSO Barbarians 26-24 te klop. Die ander oorwinnaars was Eendrag, Helshoogte en Simonsberg. Die top vier-posisies op die punteleer word nou deur Dagbreek, Huis Marais, Elsenburg en Eendrag beklee.
