OPINIONS Students have their say about campus safety
How do you feel about Campus Security?

“The security is very bad. One night I asked Campus Security to take me home because I was afraid to walk alone, but they told me that they couldn’t. G4S took me home after I was rejected by Campus Security.”
“A few weeks ago I phoned Campus Security to take me home and they said no. This really upset me because I thought that it was their job to ensure the safety of students.
“My friends were at Eendrag one night when they were robbed at gunpoint. The security guards just sat there and did nothing to help. I don’t feel safe even if security guards are around because I can’t trust that they will protect me.”
“Ná die insident by harmonie is daar baie meer sekuriteit, veral G4S voertuie.
“Nothing has been done even though incidents were reported. They are just replaced by new incidents and the cycle continues. The problem is not that there aren’t enough security guards, it is the fact that they are not efficient.”

“There is no security between Victoria street and Fharga as well as between Metanoia and En Route. The security was only around during the time when Van der Sterr burnt down. I’ve asked to be escorted home many times, but Campus Security always rejects me. As a female having to walk home alone at night, I fear for my safety.”
“Men in black have been around more frequently this week. Last night I was at the library untill late and there were at least four security guards around. Security has definitely improved since the rape incidents occurred. I think that the university felt obligated to improve security on campus.”
“Security on campus is okay. Dark roads where students need to walk home at night are never monitored. There should be security in every road to ensure that students get home safely after studying late at night.”
“There are so many ‘Men in Black’ during protests, but they disappear once the hype has faded. This makes me think that one needs to go very far in order to feel safe. Only when the lives of women are endangered, protection is offered and this only lasts for a while for the sake of ‘putting up appearances’ of so called safety and security.”
“I don’t feel threatened when I’m on campus at night. I do however feel that it is extremely dangerous late at night. As a student town we are targeted because attackers know that people are out late at night and there are many potential targets. When people need security, however, they are never there.”

“The beggars on campus are getting out of hand. They are extremely rude and make you feel very uncomfortable if you don’t give them what they ask for. Homeless people are all over campus and are granted as much access as students. This is dangerous for our safety and security should be around during the day to monitor the situation.”
“One night my friends and I sat outside Admin B in our car eating McDonalds. An unmarked white vehicle approached us and we drove away. The vehicle followed us and we later found out that it was Campus Security. Why are their vehicles unmarked? Students cannot trust unmarked vehicles because anyone could claim to be security and we wouldn’t know.”
“The security has significantly improved since last year. I have seen security guards everywhere. I do, however, feel that the parking lot at Humarga is extremely dangerous and have felt threatened numerous times after studying there late at night. I have never seen security around there.”
“Ek het onlangs by kampussekuriteit ’n klag gelê oor ’n man wat my aanhoudend teister wanneer ek huis toe loop. Hulle het my verseker dat hulle my in die toekoms huis toe sal neem as ek onveilig voel. Ek het ’n tydjie daarna hulle gebel, maar hulle was nie juis baie gelukkig om my huis toe te neem nie. Hulle het my soos ’n oorlas laat voel.”

FLOWER POWER “Flowers are essential to mankind”
Behind the Blommestalletjie bouquets JOAN VAN DYK

ie Blommestalletjie flower stall in Andringa Street is a bloom of vibrancy amongst the monotonous neon lights of the commercial outlets around it. Most Stellenbosch residents will have come into contact with the woman behind the bouquets, Gaye Barbour. “Flowers are essential to mankind,” says Barbour. “When people stop buying flowers, that should be a clear indication that the world is ending,” she quipped . Originally from Zimbabwe, Barbour moved to South Africa to complete a B.A. in Drama at the University of Cape Town. She transitioned to floristry because “ag, there are flowers in the family”. Barbour’s aunt sent her to train under Joan Pare, a famous florist who was in charge of the flower arrangements for many former heads of state, but whose main claim to fame was her arrangements for American soap opera The Bold and the Beautiful. “She was an awe-inspiring mentor,” Barbour added. According to Barbour, working in the flower industry is a matter of passion. “When people walk into a flower shop their emotions are heightened. I see the whole spectrum of human emotion every day. “It’s very touching to meet somebody at that point of need.” “I have learnt more about people in the past two years than in the rest of my life,” she adds. “The greedy, the grumpy, the ugly and the abnormally beautiful all want fresh flowers. I should write a book about it. The value of each individual has become so clear, I’m humbled by it all. “The flower industry is a prima donna,” says Barbour. “Last year the rose industry of the Western Cape collapsed when big companies started buying roses from Zambia.

She is worried that small businesses like hers will struggle because they are more vulnerable to inflation of flower costs than commercial outlets. Nonetheless, she is convinced that the flower industry will survive. “We need to stay in contact with

nature,” she added. Barbour speaks fondly of both the happy and sad memories she’s collected in her three years at the stall. “A poor lady who was very ill came into the stall. A mother of six. “She got pneumonia and none of the children were willing to help her. She bought a R100 bunch for the lady who nursed her back to health and burst into tears when she paid.
R100 was worth a million to her. “That’s the power of a flower. “Then there are the young couples in love, best friends buying each other flowers and husbands spoiling their wives. I try to create a portrait of each customer in my arrangements, which I often enhance with aromatherapy. “But creation is a never-ending process, you never know what you’ll end up with.”

Joy Mashego, a student from Stellenbosch University (SU), was crowned Miss Varsity Cup for 2016 on 11 April. On a dreary evening for FNB Maties, Mashego’s crowning was a silver lining after the home team lost the Varsity Cup final to FNB NWU-Pukke. Mashego went from being Miss Varsity Cup Stellenbosch to the overall winner of the beauty pageant during the half-time break. The respective universities had individual competitions and chose a winner who then competed for the overall title of Miss Varsity Cup. Mashego, a third year B.Acc student, needed convincing to enter and it was the community service aspect that motivated her. “Miss Varsity Cup didn’t have a deeper meaning to it, I thought it was about who has the longest legs, bluest eyes, or nicest weave,” she said. “I thought I’m not beauty pageant material. I then did my research and found out Miss Varsity Cup is associated with lots of community service and this made me enter.” The judging panel consisted of a representative of Varsity Cup, Legit (an official sponsor) and the votes from the public that was done over Facebook. Mashego grew up in a township in Mpumalanga and got involved in community service at a very young age. “I was that kid that wasn’t involved in many activities, in high school I dedicated most of my time to community service. I come from a disadvantaged background, I know what it’s like to struggle and to see how people don’t have hope for a better future.” Mashego will continue with community work this year. As Miss Varsity Cup she will work at the safe house, L’Abrie de Dieu in Stellenbosch. They provide housing to women and their children after they have fled cases of domestic violence. One of her biggest aspirations is to go into motivational speaking. She has started mentoring Miss Kayamandi and wants to reach out to many more girls. “What I want to do is give them hope and share my story of coming from a township, so they can relate to me.”

During lunch a conversation was overheard amongst a group of black SRC members from different institutions, they were all speaking English. They were asked why they did not use their mother tongue. The answer was simple but speaks volumes towards understanding and cultural compassion. They explained that everyone has different cultures so they use English to “include all in the conversation”. Various other issues were also discussed including the importance of acknowledging that transformation extends beyond just “race”. Instead social differences such as gender and sexuality are all linked to one another and if a society is to transform, the public needs to be educated and embrace these differences.

SSVO

J.H. MARAIS SU academics gives perspective on history and its statues
Has history caught up with oom Jan? ARLEEN STONE
S
ince the start of the #RhodesMustFall campaign early last year, statues, specifically those depicting colonial and apartheid South Africa, have been placed both under a microscope – and on a chopping block. Recently the statue of J.H. Marais which has been watching over the Rooiplein of Stellenbosch University (SU) for decades, has also come under crossfire. However, when students on campus were asked about J.H. Marais, in his time known to all Stellenbosch as Oom Jannie, very few knew. Some, requesting to stay anonymous, had varying opinions, ranging between him being “[t]he image of colonialisation and white-privilege on campus”, the “man who gave enough money for the University to be the place it is today”, and “someone who really has no influence on the lives of students currently studying at Stellenbosch University”.
But who was J.H. Marais?
Marais was born in 1851 on the farm Coetzenburg – today the well-known sports grounds. At the age of 19 Marais, along with three of his older brothers, decided to try their luck in the diamond rush. After being cheated by a disgruntled associate, the brothers were more successful thanks also to Jannie’s keen business sense, and after moving to Kimberley, diamond capital of the world, the brothers were extremely successful. In 1881, after returning to Stellenbosch, Jannie bought Coetzenburg from his mother. Marais excelled as a business and community leader in Stellenbosch. Although quiet-spoke, in 1899 he represented Stellenbosch in the Cape Legislative Assembly, and after the 1910 Unification, became member of the House of Assembly. Marais and two of his brothers wanted to see Dutch and its descendant, Afrikaans, flourish, and in 1895 gave medals to students at Victoria College (SU’s predecessor) who excelled in Dutch. In 1898 the prizes were converted to bursaries, and in 1902 into a loan fund. Altogether £70 000 was
invested into this fund which the Bureau for Economic Research estimates to be roughly between R14,42 and R19,25 million. In his will Marais stipulated that funds were to be used to promote education in Afrikaans in both its forms, thus including Dutch.

What about the future?
South Africa’s complex present is the result of its complex colonial and apartheid past.
The question remains: How can our past result in a harmonius future? The generation currently studying at universities across South Africa must find that answer in a shared perspective. So: How can the “Rainbow Nation” become a whole rather than have separated lines of a distinct (colour specific) history and heritage?
Volgens Matthysen is ’n deel

Being a private-living student, not having the company of fellow students like in a residence, you tend to get a bit lonely. Yes, you might have a flat mate, but most of the time flat mates are just there to help pay rent. There is an easy solution to this loneliness - pets! (Only if allowed by your land lord of course.) And sometimes it happens that you find a stray cat or dog on your way home and just cannot bare the thought of leaving them there to perish. Of course this is a huge responsibility, but I’m sure if you can hand in an assignment on time that you will be able to feed a cat or dog twice a day. The problem, however, occurs when having to pay for the food, vaccinations and neutering with a students’ allowance. Being a cat owner of recent and a student, I have investigated cheap ways to care for our four-legged friends. Depending on your monthly income, you can have pets vaccinated and neutered at the Animal Welfare Society Stellenbosch. Just take a trip down to the welfare and have a chat with them about your circumstances and form of monthly allowance. If mom and dad is your source of income, you may have to make use of a private vet. Either way, please make sure you have your pet neutered! Prices for neutering at a private vet may vary from R800 to R1 200 and vaccinations from R300 to R500. When buying food you obviously want to give your bundle of fur the best and most nutritious daily meal. Ladies and gents, the chances of you

BUNDLE OF FUR It’s possible to care for your pets on a student budget. being able afford Hills on a monthly bases are slim, but don’t fear, because cheaper options are near. There is nothing wrong with Pick ’n Pay or Checkers bought food like Montego, Whiskas or Purina. Most vet shops that are Hills supplied have a free Hills starter pack for puppies and kittens with a 400g bag of dry food pellets and other goodies. And don’t be shy to ask for food samples at vet shops (and no, you can’t ask for samples every week at the same vet shop).
It is also important to get your fluff ball a de-worming pill, as well as some anti-flea supplements. Products like this are available at any pet shop and they will help guide you in the right dosage for both considering the age and weight of your pet. The Animal Welfare Society of Stellenbosch is located in Devon Valley Road and you can contact them on 021 886 4901. Don’t be scared to adopt a furcoated fellow, just do it responsibly.
*Skuilname is gebruik
HOE WERK STREET STORE?

Daaroor is ek so opgewonde.

In baie gevalle is hierdie kritiek geregverdig.
Skryf dus ’n brief, maak ’n oproep of kom maak ’n draai by ons kantoor.

Use energy to enhance, not destroy So many opinions are running around regarding the new language policies that are taking universities by storm as if it is a new fashion trend. Sure, we must take into consideration that nine of our of ficial languages were not developed academically due to the apartheid era, where one of the eleven was favoured in a substantial way. The other was deemed successful as it was brought about by Western culture, a universal language. Afrikaners have always strived to further education, as is evidenced by the amount of Afrikaans universities in South Africa. Yes, they do have an advantage, apartheid was in their favour. Now, years later, the trend is to keep hating the Afrikaners for apartheid af ter the white flag was raised, instead of accepting that it is over and rebuilding our country from the ashes. The fact is that apartheid was a very sad time for our country, but breaking down another culture will never further your own. Therefore, a counter proposal must be laid down where, instead of crucif ying dif ferent cultures for the past, we develop another one of our eleven languages. When the third language is fully developed as an academic language, we can move on to develop the nex t and so on. Instead of using our energy to destroy culture we must strive to enhance it. Otherwise we will lose our individuality, the very thing that makes us unique as South Africans.
So this is just another protest.”

Ek moes ’n paar nuwe stukkies aanskaf. Dis juis hiérom dat winters my jaarlikse hekkie is. My toestand is meer seisoenaal as enigiets anders. Dis meer instandhouding as enigiets anders.
My grootste uitdaging bly kos-kwota. Dis fataal. Ek swipe my studentekaart meer by die Hubs as by Fhargha. As jy hierdie winter my te gereeld raakloop by die Hub, doen jou tiende en help my om op die smal weg te bly.
ALDU DUMINY

“Familietyd. “Dít is vir my baie belangrik.

o this week I decided to try something out of my comfort zone. I went to the Hot Yoga Studio in Stellenbosch to see what all the yogi’s are raving about. Hot yoga is performed in a hot room, heated to up to 38°C. Heated yoga gives you the extra push and flexibility, and helps detoxify your body. It is a very intense, but relaxing workout and definitely worth a try! “Yoga is great for any body type; young, old, skinny, round, short, tall. It helps keep the body flexible and fit,” said Johannes de Villiers, owner of the Stellenbosch Hot Yoga Studio. “It also helps with your self-discipline, patience and humbleness. “It is addictive, and the best thing you can do for yourself,” he said. De Villiers encourages students to do hot yoga, because it helps them de-stress. “Especially when you spend a lot of time behind a desk (or behind the bar), it is a fun way to get your adrenalin-dose for the day,” he said. “I would recommend starting yoga when you’re young, while your body is still strong and flexible. “If you start young, you will be able to keep these good qualities when you are older,” said De Villiers. There are different classes to attend, and most of them are beginners-friendly. But if you are scared you won’t be able to do it, here are some yoga poses to work on, before you try the real deal. To find out more about the Stellenbosch Hot Yoga Studio, you can visit their website at www.hotyogastudio.co.za.

Move 1:
TREE POSE: Stand up straight, balancing on one foot. Put the other foot in the inside of your standing leg. “It is important that your foot is above or beneath you knee, and not on the knee,” De Villiers said. For more of a challenge, take your hands above your head.
Move 2:
WARRIOR TWO: Your front foot’s toes points to the front, and your back foot is completely turned to the side. Open your hips to the side. Lift your arms high to open your chest. Try to get your front thigh parallel to the floor. “Do not let your front knee go over your front foot,” said De Villiers.
Move 3:
DOWNWARD FACING DOG: Put your hands and feet flat on the floor, hip distance apart. Straighten your back and legs. Tuck your chin and push your head as deep as you can towards your toes. Try to get your heels as close to the floor as possible.
Move 4:
HIGH PLANK: With your hands and knees hip distance apart, lift and straighten your legs. Do not hollow your back, but pull your pelvis in to activate your core muscles. This will help keep your head, back and bum in line.

What to wear Dress comfortably for your hot (or normal) yoga class, so you don’t have to adjust it throughout the class. Dress as if you are going for a long jog. Women can wear tights and a sportsbra or a tight shirt. Men can wear tights or any other exercise pants, shirtless or with a wifebeater.
PARKRUN
Fun-filled and free fitness Saturdays await at Root 44 GIZELLEDE GÖTZ
Lately I’ve been noticing a lot of Instagram posts on my news feed about people running on farms. What is this all about? After scrolling through the hundreds of selfies at Root 44, I finally discovered what was going on. Not only does Root 44 have an amazing market, but they are also hosting a parkrun every Saturday at 08:00. Parkrun was founded by Paul Sinton-Hewitt in 2004 and the first event was held in the UK. Events now take place every week in Australia, Denmark, Ireland, New Zealand, Poland, Russia, South Africa, the United Kingdom, Singapore, the Czech Republic, the United States, Italy and France. The first parkrun in South Africa was held in 211 and took place at Delta Park in Johannesburg. The Stellenbosch version consists of a 5km running course through the Audacia Wine Farm. Personally I see this as a form
of torture, but a lot of people enjoy this and actually do it for fun. Being students, the word ‘free’ makes a lot of our senses tingle, thus parkrun’s free participation may be the most popular student activity on Saturdays (not on Saturday nights, though). All that you have to do is register for your first run on www.parkrun. co.za (it’s a once-off registry), take your printed copy of your barcode with you and ready, set, go! Luckily for the newborn runners that are not just quite at the fitness level of finishing a 5km in 15 minutes, parkrun has no time limit, so you can take your time and even enjoy the view along the way. And if you can’t attend the Stellenbosch parkrun, don’t stress it! There are parkruns in Bellville, Durbanville and Franschoek as well. So why not join in on a fun and healthy activity? You can even have a bite and beer at the market afterwards (you know, just to defeat the whole purpose of the ‘healthy’-part).

Stellenbosch and Military Maties face off LAYKIN RUDOLPH
T
he sixth annual Military Academy and Stellenbosch main campus sports day took place in Saldanha on Saturday. Matsobane Laka, deputy director of support services at Maties Sport, said the main idea behind this day is to create relationships between the different Maties campuses. “People should not see the main campus as an island and what we try to do through sport is bring people together,” he said.
The day included friendly matches between the participating sport codes which included sevens rugby, football, athletics (crosscountry), netball and a new edition this year, chess. The Stellenbosch Rugby Academy players represented the main campus at the sports day, beating the Military Academy 85-15 without any conversions. “We expected more from their players, we thought they would be more fit,” said Stellenbosch captain Stephan Burger, who scored three tries.
The main campus football team were held 1-1 at half-time. It was in the second half that Stellenbosch ran riot with the score to demolish the Military Academy 7-1 after a slow start. Captain Joshua Rugters said the Military Academy put up a fight in the first half. “It was a bit of a struggle for us in the first half but after our second goal, I think it became relatively easy for us.” The Stellenbosch chess and athletics teams both came up
victorious. The only Stellenbosch team to lose was the netball. The first team netball girls from Kylemore High School were chosen to represent the main campus and went down 17-25 to the Military Academy. “We got to see different techinques from the Stellenbosch players, I think we also learned a lot,” said Nosipho Libazi from the winning netball team. Military Academy captain Josh Cloete said the day was not about being competitive, but rather to bring
unity to the different campuses. “This sports day is more of a goodwill day of interaction and not necessarily a day of competition.” Every year a new sport is added to the programme to make the sports day even bigger. “We started with the four basic sports and what we try to do every year is make it bigger by adding another sporting code, so this year we added chess,” said Cloete. The next sports day will take place in Stellenbosch with the possibility of the Tygerberg Maties joining in.

Maties cricket looking to go one better in Club Champs ANDRE HUISAMEN
Last year Steinhoff Maties cricket lost in the final of National Club Championship against the Hollywoodbets Crusaders Cricket Club in a match that was destined to provide Maties with the national title. That however didn’t happen and Maties had to settle for second place, but they will be hoping to go one better in this year’s competition. The tournament started on Friday with Maties facing off against Union Stars Cricket Club.
Unfortunately for Maties their batting let them down and they lost by eighteen runs, chasing only a total of 139, but they made up for that on Saturday when they beat CUT Cricket Club by ten wickets to get their campaign back on track. Maties, however proved a bit inconsistent on Sunday as they lost again, this time by four wickets against the North-West University’s (NWU-Pukke) Cricket Club. Maties remaining fixture is today against the Hollywoodbets Crusaders where they will be looking to end on a high.

Varsity Cup could have no winner this year
Decision about Pukke’s title postponed till May ANDRÉ HUISAMEN
T
wo weeks ago Maties rugby fans were heartbroken when the Maties rugby team lost in overtime in the Varsity Cup final to the NWU-Pukke in one of tightest local rugby matches the competition ever witnessed. The NWU-Pukke scored the winning try in the 89th minute to claim their maiden Varsity Cup trophy, but after only a week of being champions the NWU-Pukke found themselves in the spotlight again, this time for the wrong reasons. Last Monday the news broke on all social media platforms that the NWUPukke might have fielded an ineligible player throughout the tournament, including the final where the player represented the side. Tighthead prop, Bart le Roux, played a total of 614 minutes in this year’s tournament and was registered as a first year student. Le Roux however represented the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) Impi’s in the 2014 Varsity Shield competition as a first year student and according to Varsity Cup and Varsity Shield rules, a player is not allowed to participate as a first year player in the respective competitions on more than one occasion. Auditing company KPMG, who represents the Varsity Cup, cleared Le Roux at the beginning of the year. NWU-Pukke thus believed it had no influence if he played for UKZN before. NWU-Pukke then later revealed that he was one of two UKZN players who were not registered as students at that time in 2014. Varsity Cup’s rules however,
changed in 2015 regarding non-student players. Earlier this year the UKZN Impi’s were docked 12 league points on the Varsity Shield log after they fielded a player who previously represented the University of Johannesburg. That decision meant that UKZN could not play in the promotion/relegation match against UCT after a pretty successful season. On Saturday the case was postponed until May, but should NWUPukke be found guilty and receive the same punishment as UKZN, they will be docked ten points, but how will that influence a side that has already been crowned champions? Varsity Cup management will have to make a very big decision regarding the winner of the competition if NWU-Pukke should be found guilty. According to Netwerk24 this could mean that the Varsity Cup knockout
rounds might be replayed with NWUPukke falling out due to their ten point deduction. Both Shimlas and Tuks’ coaches, Hendro Scholtz and Pote Human, have indicated that they don’t think knockout-rounds are a good idea, as their best players are already involved in provincial tournaments. The other decision might also be that this year’s competition will have no winner, after the tournament was already disrupted in the middle due to student protests. Varsity Cup CEO Duitser Bosman said, “obviously we are working hard to finalise this matter as soon as possible. “However, out of respect for due process and bearing in mind the significance of this matter, advocate Stelzner SC’s ruling to postpone the hearing was supported by both Varsity Cup and the North-West University”.
SHORT-LIVED HAPPINESS? The NWU-Pukke may lose the Varsity Cup trophe they snatched before Maties on 11 April in Stellenbosch.
Varsity Sevens fever hits Cape Town ANDRÉ HUISAMEN
In December of last year Cape Town hosted the HSBC Cape Town Sevens for the very first time as part of the World Series’ build-up to the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, where sevens rugby will be contested for the very first time. The Cape Town event was a massive success and this coming weekend that sevens spirit will again be present in the Mother City. For the second year in a row Villager Rugby Club will host the Varsity Sevens competition in what promises to be a very exciting tournament and a format that promotes running rugby and boasts high scores. Having won the competition before, Maties will be looking to make up for the poor competition they had last year and compete for the title till the very end. Each team has a maximum of twelve players in a squad with five of them playing from the bench. Teams will play a Round Robin format on the first two days, with the knockout phase starting on the third
and final day. Each team will play a total of nine Round Robin matches with five matches being played on day one and four matches on day two. After the Round Robin section, the top four teams on the log will qualify for the Cup Semi-Finals, with team one playing against team four and team two against team three. Teams that finish 5th to 8th on the log will compete in the Plate SemiFinals, while teams nine and ten will compete in the 9th and 10th place play-off.
One of the most interesting features of Varsity Sevens is the Power Play. Power Plays can be called by any coach of the participating teams on field at any stage in the match, with each side receiving only one Power Play per match and will last only for one minute. During the Power Play any team who scores a try will receive ten points for the try. As we have seen in the Varsity Cup competition, the organisers make massive effort to attract big crowds and to get supporters interacting with the competition. Sponsored by Steers and Carling Black Label, the Back Your Boytjies vibe will be back again this weekend as the best sevens universities in the country tackle each other for the title. Last year it was the University of the Free State’s Kovsies that grabbed the title, but this year we can expect another tightly contested competition. The tournament starts on Saturday with Maties playing against UCT, UWC, WSU, UFH and UP-Tuks. On Sunday they will face UJ, Madibas, NWU-Pukke and Kovsies.
