ooddienste is Maandag na die Eikestad-winkelsentrum ontbied in reaksie op ’n bomdreigement. Dit kom nadat die Stadsaal op Dinsdag 5 Maart ook onder ’n valse bomdreigement deurgeloop het. Alhoewel dit die tweede noodontruiming van dié winkelsentrum in drie maande is, het dit hierdie keer vir ’n ernstiger dreigement tot stilstand gekom. Ná die dreigement is ’n ontruimingsproses onmiddellik onderneem. Lede van die Suid-Afrikaanse Polisiediens (SAPD), munisipale wetstoepassing, brandweer, bomspan en nooddienste is almal na die toneel ontbied. Kaptein Natalie Martin het Maandagmiddag bevestig dat die SAPD ’n ondersoek met die bomspan asook die snuffelhonde onderneem het. Die SAPD het alle ingange en paaie na die winkelsentrum versper. ’n Polisiebeampte wat in die parkeerarea oorkant die Checkers-ingang genader is, het die pad met sy voertuig versper. Hy het verduidelik dat die ondersoek “onderweg” was. ADT Sekuriteitsdienste het ’n boodskap op die “Crime Watch” WhatsApp-groep ontvang, waarna ’n wag die polisie van die dreigement in kennis gestel het. “Ons is van die dreigement bewus gemaak en ons plaaslike agente is

op die grond besig om die SAPD te help om die area af te sper,” het Stuart Grobbelaar, kommunikasiebestuurder van Stellenbosch-munisipaliteit, gesê. Hy het bygevoeg dat bomdreigemente ’n “toenemende probleem” is, aangesien daar verskeie oor die afgelope paar maande was. Lisa Visagie, ’n werknemer by Salon Azurelle, het gesê die winkelsentrum word dikwels geteiken. “Dit is die agtste bomdreigement sedert ek hier begin werk het. Die werknemers word opgelei vir hierdie soort situasies en almal het ’n afsonderlike werk om te doen,” het sy gesê. “Ek was besig om my wenkbroue te tint toe die alarm afgegaan het,” het Marco Dean Rothchild, ’n stilis by Salon Azurelle, gesê. “[Hierdie noodontruimings] vat besigheid weg, want afsprake moet óf gekanselleer óf geskuif word,” het hy bygevoeg. Kelly-Robyn Morrey, wat tydens die ontruiming buite die winkelsentrum was, het die toneel as “chaoties” beskryf. Sy het ook aangevoer dat daar afbakenings, verskeie polisiebeamptes en -karre, sekuriteit, brandweerwaens, die bomspan en snuffelhonde was. “Ek dink hierdie dreigement is redelik ernstig. Die vorige keer wat dit gebeur het, het ons aanhou werk en nou moes ons ontruim,” het Wilamina Massdorp, teenwoordig op die toneel, gesê.

Two ‘toebroodjies’ for charity

oebroodjie, a team of 25 students at Stellenbosch University (SU), have made it their mission to bring awareness to hunger in Stellenbosch and the loneliness that street life can bring. Toebroodjie is an organisation that is run by Carl Prinsloo as well as Megan Cromhout. Prinsloo said that Toebroodjie visits the homeless in the streets of Stellenbosch once a week. The team currently provides two sandwiches to 35-40 homeless people, and they also spend time talking to them. According to Prinsloo, the homeless are used to people giving them money and then sending them away. The team is divided into smaller groups and the route they usually take starts at Die Braak. They make their way to the police station and the Stelkor pharmacy. He added that they also take into account the safety risks of the area and are working on adding more routes when their team expands. Toebroodjie has an Instagram page (@toebroodjies) where they share some of the stories of the people that they help.

Photo: Fourie Möller According to Prinsloo, Toebroodjie wants to post positive stories on Instagram to tell the life stories of the homeless. “The aim of the platform isn’t actually to get people to feel sorry

for them, we want to show everyone that you can add to people’s happiness in a positive sense,” Prinsloo said. He added that giving the homeless a platform to share their stories restores a sense

of humanity in society. Paul Engelbrecht, a homeless man who does gardening work at St Mary’s Anglican Church and Rhenish, said that many of the homeless sit at the taxi rank and have no jobs to make

money to feed themselves. He said that the sandwiches he received from Toebroodjie gave him energy so that he could work. Cathleen May, a homeless woman, says students from Toebroodjie approached her when she was sitting on a bench at Die Braak. She added that what she enjoyed the most about the visit was that she got to talk to them. Prinsloo said that their plan is to visit various residences and private student organisations (PSOs) in order to expand Toebroodjie beyond the town of Stellenbosch by having more people join the team. He added Toebroodjie is not exclusive to the students of SU. Prinsloo said that people can contribute by giving bread, bread spread, cling wrap and foil, readymade sandwiches, money, old clothes, blankets and they can also join the team to prepare and hand out sandwiches. “It truly is a humbling experience, opens one’s eyes and changes one’s perspective on the workings of society,” Prinsloo said. BY ‘n amptelike seremoniële aangeleentheid het die Universiteit van die Staat van Michigan (MSU) en Universiteit Stellenbosch (US) ‘n memorandum van verstandhouding (MOU) onderteken, wat instem om samewerking in navorsing, die gemeenskap en onderwys, tussen die Verenigde State (VSA) en Suid-Afrika te bewerkstellig. Hierdie ooreenstemming het tot stand gekom ná die twee universiteite die Andre W. Mellon-stigting genader het. Hierdie stigting verskaf reeds ‘n drie jaar toelaag om die bestaande Ubuntu Dialogues-projek wat die US en MSU het, te finansier. Die projek delf in kwessies van kulturele erfenis en maatskaplike geregtigheid en het die doel om ‘n raamwerk wat die betroubaarheid en bestendigheid van universiteitsmuseums bevorder, te ontwikkel. Die projek spoor ook samewerking vir die sirkulasie en sameskepping van kennis aan. Oorspronklik was Ubuntu: Museums and Communities Connect se inisiatief om ‘n toelaag wat deur die MSU se Alliansie vir Afrika-vennootskappe gegee sou word, beplan. Dit sou wees om die moontlikheid daar te stel vir aanlyn-gesprekke tussen studente van die twee instansies, maar daar is besluit dat die Ubuntu Dialogues-inisiatief ‘n twee jaar lange internskap-geleentheid by vennoot universiteite in die VSA gaan bied. Hiermee sal studente aan uitruilprogramme tussen die US en die MSU kan deelneem.

Dit het erfenis-beroepspersone in Suid-Afrika in staat gestel om instansies in die VSA te besoek en moontlike verdere samewerking te bespreek en saam te beplan. Die ooreenkoms was dadelik van krag, nadat beide partye dit op 21 Februarie onderteken het en dit beteken dat hierdie program vir die volgende drie jaar, tot en met 2021, van krag sal wees. Die MOU sal gesamentlike sosiale impak projekte tussen die twee universiteite steun, pro-

fessionele ontwikkeling en die uitruil van personeel, studente en navorsing, asook die ontwikkeling van samewerkende versamelinge en uitstallings. “Die toelaag is aan voorheen benadeelde studente, beide uit Suid-Afrika en die VSA, beskikbaar,” sê Mgijima. Die MOU maak dit egter duidelik dat “die instansies hulself aan ‘n beleid van gelyke geleenthede, nie-diskriminasie en regstellende aksie voorskryf. Die programsaktiwiteite en fasiliteite is aan almal beskikbaar, ongeag, ras, kleur, gender, geloof, nasionale oorsprong, politiese oortuigings, seksuele oriëntasie, huwelikstatus, gestremdheid, lengte, gewig, veteraan-status, ouderdom of familiestatus. THERE is a new app on the market, and it might just make home cooking less of a challenge for students. FeedMe, an app designed by Ryan Seebregts, a third year BEng (Electrical and Electronic engineering) student, generates “easy and affordable recipes” to help home cooks make the most out of their cooking. Together with his girlfriend, Bianca van Zyl, Seebregts started working with this problem and came up with FeedMe. Seebregts said that he had gained considerable experience working from his classes and lectures. “It helps if it’s your area of interest, because coding can be frustrating sometimes,” he added. On the front or ‘home’ page of the app there is a feed which displays three random meal images, which can be filtered using different mealtimes and

different dietary requirements. The photos of all the foods available are currently taken by the pair, but they have plans to add the functionality of submissions so that users can add their own meals and recipes to the database. A user can also list ingredients they have at home and the app will recommend meals based on the ingredients. Seebregts plans to release incremental updates in future to keep the app relevant, fix bugs and increase functionality. He is developing a web version of the app to reach a greater audience and help establish the small business endeavour he hopes it will become. Seebregts’ interest in coding, web design and app development are greater than that of the culinary art, which is why he created the app in the first place, but by using a skill he acquired he not only managed to help himself but made it available for others to help themselves as well.

imonsberg men’s residence is not afraid of the f-word. This residence co-hosted an event that engaged students in public discussion on the impact of female empowerment in their lives. The ‘F-Word’ event, a presentation and discussion on modern day feminism, invited the audience to share personal experiences and identify day-to-day social behaviour that leads to sexism and sexual violence against women on Stellenbosch Campus. “The word ‘empowerment’ has become a schlep because we do not engage enough with each other,”said Xola Njengele a Simonsberg HK member, Njengele is also the chairperson of BA Student Commitee (BASC and Amnesty International Stellenbosch.) Simonsberg collaborated with Harmonie house committee members, with the intention of speaking about behaviour that might unknowingly perpetuate a rape culture and other related problematic opinions on campus. “Feminism is not a women’s issue – it is a human issue. It’s a very brave step for a men’s res to host a women empowerment event,” Said Marie Mjacu, vice prim of Harmonie. “Realistically, the amount of sexual assault cases on campus would shock people. A concept like consent is something some people simply do not understand, that’s why guys become uncomfortable in such conversations. Mubaiwa was happy to see the continuation of the Woman Empowerment portfolios that she implemented during her term as a member of the SRC in 2016. “Feminism is not just an idea you discuss on a Tuesday night. It is a constant practice. If you say you believe in female empowerment and equality of genders, then it is something you must constantly engage in with your friends and colleagues,” Mubaiwa said. Mjacu said there is more to be done on the part of male residences. “The small

things like how you refer to girls when you talk to your guy friends is where men can do more. If you’re in a group of guys, it’s your responsibility to call your friend out,” she added. “We are afraid of being challenged,” Mubaiwa said. “Worse still is we have a shaming culture on campus, so then when someone says I don’t agree with you, they become labelled.” The forum concluded in praise of the Women Empowerment portfolios that many leaders such as Mubaiwa have implemented that seek to change the cultures encouraged by residences. “It is becoming normalized,” Mubaiwa said. “Why shouldn’t it be normal for residences to empower people?”

THE societies of Stellenbosch University (SU) had puppies on the Rooiplein and students cleaning up Strand Beach for the first ever Eco-Week. Running from 4 to 8 March, Eco-Week was a collaboration between SU societies to promote awareness around the issue of environmental conservation and sustainable living on campus. The initiative was undertaken by the Golden Key Society, which partnered with EcoMaties, Maties PAW, the Stellenbosch chapter of the United Nations Association of South Africa (UNASA) and Academics for Development (AFD) on various events. “Our main aim was to raise awareness for the problems facing our environment and to get students involved in the conversation about potential solutions,” said Jannu Nieman, the spokesperson for Golden Key. The events for the week started on Monday evening with EcoMaties hosting a panel discussion on environmental issues. According to Ntando Mncube, spokesperson for EcoMaties, the aim of the discussion was to be a “catalyst for

Maajidah moes binne ’n sekere tydgleuf haar mede-Monica- en Harmonie-inwoners oorreed om die kombuis halaal te maak. Monica en Harmonie deel ’n kombuis, maar het afsonderlike eetsale. Haar plan was suksesvol. Monica en Harmonie se eetsale gaan binnekort Moslemstudente van Monica, Harmonie en Wilgenhof kan akkommodeer. Enige studente van hul kluster wat varkvleis of nie-halaalvoedsel wil eet, kan dit steeds by Wilgenhof bestel.

DIE Universiteit Stellenbosch se Debatsvereniging (USDV) het die afgelope naweek hul jaarlikse beginnerstoernooi aangebied. Die USDV het lede van aktiewe debatsverenigings van Universiteit van Wes-Kaapland (UWK), Universiteit van Kaapstad (UK) en die Kaapse Skiereiland Universiteit van Tegnologie (KSUT) genooi om aan dié toernooi deel te neem. Slegs debatteerders met geen of baie min ervaring op universiteit mag deelgeneem het. Dis alles ter voorbereiding vir ander, meer ervare en gewilde toernooie, soos die Jozi Rumble. Beginners is op die eerste dag deur ‘n vinnige maar informasiebelaaide sessie oor speaker- en beoordelaars-afrigting.

Dit word albei volgens die Britse Parlement-styl gedoen. Hierdie styl geniet voorkeur by universiteitsdebatte, omdat daar só meer van ‘n wisselwerking tussen idees kan geskied, volgens Lia Snijman, die USVD se voorsitter. Kort ná die opleiding het die debatteerders hul onderwerpe ontvang en het 15 minute gekry om navorsing te doen voor hulle dan vir óf teen die onderwerp moes argumenteer, wat enige onderwerp kon wees, soos byvoorbeeld, of mans in die feminis-beweging ingesluit moet word. Mosibudi Madike, vereniging se gelykberegtigingsbeampte (equity officer) by die toernooi, het haar rol by toernooie verduidelik. “Iemand wat in ‘n wesenlike, legitieme posisie is om dit sal kan doen,” het sy gesê.

Die week wat jou gaan toets LISA DE CLERCQ

yk, dit voel miskien of jy gister by jou eerste klas van die jaar in gedraf het, maar die realiteit is dat ons nou al ses weke hier is. Die eerste kwartaal van die jaar is besig om baie vinnig tot ’n einde te kom en dit beteken net een ding – toetsweek is om die draai. Vir dié wat nuut op Stellenbosch is; toetsweek is die week waarin BRek- en Ingenieurswese-studente van klas afkry om al hulle toetse af te lê. Hierdie week is egter ook bekend as daardie tyd van die kwartaal waar, soos Lara Stander, ’n BA (Regte)-student, sê: “Die hele wêreld tot stilstand kom en jou probleme niks in vergelyking met die wat toetsweek skryf s’n is nie.” Gedurende hierdie week is jou BRek- of Ingenieurswese-vriende, soos Kristen Harding, ’n BA (Geesteswetenskap)-student, tereg opmerk, slegs “ ’n mite”. ’n Mens sien hulle absoluut nooit nie, want hulle “kan nie”, hulle “moet leer”. Natuurlik is die week vir hierdie uitverkore groep studente ’n vreeslike angsaanjaende week. Die hele kampus het baie simpatie met hulle. Maar toetsweek is egter ook ’n moeilike tyd vir die studente wat ander kursusse studeer. Bly kalm Gedurende stresvolle tye is dit baie belangrik om kalm te bly. Ja, die biblioteek ruik na daai suur reuk wat slegs deur stres veroorsaak word en nee, jy gaan nie gedurende toetsweek ’n oop rekenaar hier kry nie.

BA-TOETSWEEK Al het die Ingeneurswese en BRek-studente ’n toetsweek, het alle studente wel ook toetse. Gister of môre se toets is ook ál waaroor jy met jou BRek- of Ingenieurswese-vriende konstant gaan praat. Dit is gewoonlik gedurende hierdie tyd dat jy gefrustreerd begin wonder waarom jou kursus nie ook ’n toetsweek het nie. Mag jy ook, soos Christina Eloff, ’n BA (Internasionale Studie)-student, kalmte vind in die wete dat daar weke is waarin jy ook elke dag toetse skryf. Dit word net nie ’n toetsweek genoem nie. Eloff het besef dat die rede hiervoor natuurlik is dat daar nie slegs toetse in daardie week geskryf word nie. Jy het gedurende daardie week ’n hele klomp take, opstelle en mondelinge om te doen. Jy loop

Wanneer toetsweek net te veel raak, gaan dalk saam met jou nie-BRek- en nie-Ingenieurswese-vriende iewers buite Stellenbosch vir ’n uitstappie, net om bietjie van al die stres weg te kom. Gebruik ook hierdie tyd om moeite te doen om jou klasvriende beter te leer ken, of soos Colleen Müller, ’n BCom (Bestuurswetenskappe)-student, op te vang met vriende wat jy lanklaas gesien het. Gaan kyk daardie fliek wat volgens jou BRek-vriend dom is of gaan staar na kuns waarvoor jou Ingenieurswese-pel net nie tyd het nie. Toetsweek is ’n wonderlike geleentheid vir blaaskanse. Beloon jouself Harde werk moet beloon word. Soos ons almal weet gaan al diegene wat toetsweek skryf gedurende die vakansie lekker ontspan as beloning vir die min slaap en al die ure agter die boeke. Jy, aan die anderkant, gaan heel moontlik jou hele reses voor jou lessenaar spandeer, besig om vir al die baie toetse wat ná die “breek” kom te leer, met geen beloning in sig nie. CARSTEN RASCH’S memoir Between Rock and a Hard Place, is a rollercoaster in every sense of the word. His story takes readers on a journey in South Africa during apartheid, through the eyes of a young, usually broke, and often times high or drunk, Afrikaans man desperate to make a change. Evoking a Johnny is Nie Dood Nie feeling of psychedelic rebellion and extravagance, Rasch’s book takes readers into the subversive South African music industry at one of its most tumultuous times. Writing about a time of oppression and revolution, Rasch tracks his personal journey of self-discovery while South Africa too was tracking her own path to a new identity. As a white Afrikaans man living under apartheid, Rasch’s tone can at times ring of a certain level of self-importance of being a white man who opposed the National Party’s regime and rule.

He often shares his sentiment of being anti-establishment and counter-culture in a way that almost equates it to being something of a revolutionary against the apartheid state, when in actual fact his angst is more to do with a personal sense of revolution than a political one. Nevertheless, the memoir is a rock and roll concert for the most part, and Rasch evokes many a scene almost tangible to the reader. Maties will be happy to know that Stellenbosch features in the book as it is where Rasch attended university (if one can say that despite of his infrequent attendance and failure to graduate). A book ultimately about music, the jol, drugs, booze, resistance and a lot of fun. This memoir is certainly one which should be devoured in big chunks. Many a laugh-out-loud moments make this book a reckless and exciting journey which will certainly leave South Africans saying hectic!

INGREDIENTS:

200g Beef mince 2 teaspoons of cream cheese 1/2 Tomato 1/2 Avocado Black pepper Tabasco Sauce Almonds

240g Beef fillet Olive Oil Tomatoes Caramalized Onions Mixed herb Any Steak sauce Potato/ Butternut

METHOD:

Steam fry 200g of plain lean beef mince with a few almonds for crunchiness. Remove from the stove and stir 2 teaspoons of cream cheese into the mince mix. Add 1/2 a tomato and 1/2 an avocado, seasoned with black pepper and tabasco sauce and you are good to indulge yourself. If I'm really hungry I add sprouted or cooked lentils to the mix as well to give it more volume. This meal is very high in protein, moderately high in fat and low in carbs.

Fillet steak is one of the more expensive meals I make. Pictured here is my “lean” option: very basic and quick to make. 240g Beef fillet is seared over medium heat with virgin olive oil until still slightly pink in the middle. Add to a bed of tomato & caramalized onion. Season the dish with mixed herbs and a few drops of your favorite steak sauce.Total cost: R40. When I’m really hungry and the lean option is not satisfactory, I add boiled/fried potatos or a butternut.

VERLEDE jaar het Woordfees met Jazz in the Quad begin, in samewerking met Jazz in the Native Yards (JINY) waar van die beste plaaslike jazz-kunstenaars ten toon gestel word. Vanjaar het hulle nóg ’n nuwe en opwindende element vir al die feeskatte aangebied, genaamd Jazz in Kayamandi. Jazz in Kayamandi was werklik ’n aand van opwinding met die beroemde sangeres Babalwa Mentjies wat opgetree het in samewerking met the Little Giantsorkes wat deur die legendariese George Werner gelei is. “Dit was great om in Kayamandi te speel, want dit is lekker om te sien hoe ons deur musiek met mense kan connect van all walks of life,” sê Bryce Allies, een van die kitaarspelers in The Little Giants. “In Suid-Afrika het jazz ontstaan uit die townships en dit moet teruggebring word. Meer kunstenaars van Kayamandi moet ook deel hiervan vorm,” sê Werner. The Little Giants seën ons al vir die afgelope 20 jaar met die voorste jazzmusiek. In 1999 het Ezra Ngcukana

Deur die jare het die projek al meer as 250 jong musikante die geleentheid gegee om te ontwikkel en baie lede van The Little Giants is al gekies om deel van die National Jazz Youth Band of die Schools Jazz Band in Grahamstad te wees.

Vandag bestaan die groep uit 22 jong musikante tussen die ouderdom van 13 en 23 wat van die Kaapse Vlakte en omliggende areas kom. Wernes beskryf die projek as: “Die aansteeklike klank van

’n Suid-Afrikaanse “big band”. Marabi, Mbaqanga, Jazz, Fusion en rockritmes is saamgesmelt om ’n kleurvolle klank te skep. “Ons doel is om die plaaslike gehoor meer bewus van ons ryk inheemse jazzmusiek te maak en om dit verder te bevorder. Die wêreld is bewus van ons ryk kultuur, maar ongelukkig word dit nie plaaslik erken nie.” The Little Giants het al by Kaapstad se bekendste feeste opgetree. Dit sluit in die Cape Town International Jazz Festival, die Artscape Youth Festival en die Standard Bank National Youth Jazz festival. Hierdie projek gee vir jong musikante hoop om bo hul omstandighede uit te styg. “Die mees opwindende ding vir my van jazz is dat mens nie altyd weet wat volgende kom nie. Die vreugde daarvan word juis gevind in die onbekende en die onverwagse twists en turns kan beide lekker en vreesaanjaend wees, afhanged van hoe mens daarna kyk,” sê Duncan Johnson, die alt-saksofoonspeler. The Little Giants maak op 14 en 15 Junie ’n regstreekse opname by Kunstekaap om hulle twintigste bestaansjaar te vier.

P.H. Fat sound hits new crowds Kathryn van den Berg meets up with P.H. Fat to find out why he decided on Stellenbosch University’s music students for his back-up harmonies.

lthough it is always exciting when big names in the local music industry visit Stellenbosch, few names as recognised as P.H. Fat can cause quite this much hype by involving students in the recording process. Mike Zietsman, known by his stage-name P.H. Fat, described Stellenbosch as “one of [his] main local haunts” and was here again on 28 February in the music department for a very specific reason. P.H. Fat collaborated with eight fourth year music students to record vocals for his new album. He contacted Blaine Josephs, Kuko chairperson, over WhatsApp looking for an “ensemble to sing on his track”. Josephs said that music students from Stellenbosch University’s department were chosen for their ability to easily learn music and harmonise with each other. He explained that the eight chosen students had limited time to prepare for the recording beforehand: “Today was our first rehearsal, and it is also the day that we are recording.” Josephs expressed his excitement “about being contacted to do something like this”. Despite this being his first time organising a collaboration between students and local music icons. Van Wyk Venter, fourth-year BMus student specialising in voice performance, was of the eight students performing vocals on P.H Fat’s new track. “I was pretty excited. I’ve watched a few of his shows and

Fat chose students to record with him. “It shows initiative from his side. We have so many music students from around the country all looking to perform and get their names out there,” Venter said. P.H. Fat has a special love for Stellenbosch, performing here two to three times a year. “My favourite places to perform are the reses. I’m going to get shouted at if I name a particular one, but my main two are Simonsberg and Wilgenhof. They’ve always been pretty f****** rad,”

P.H. Fat laughed. “There is a great energy here – the events are so dope for me,” he said with reference to Stellenbosch as a whole. When asked what the inspiration for his new album was, P.H. Fat requested that the working title of both album and track on which he was working remain secret. However, he said that it has to do with sex and everything that goes with it. “The main influence is a story of a one-night stand that ends in heartbreak,” P.H. Fat said. His new album, which “is going to be a banger”, is hopefully going to be released by June. Upon finish-

ing recording for the day, P.H. Fat asked Venter and Chante Van Der Westhuizen, who is another member of the eight vocalists, to record with him in Cape Town the following Sunday. Van Der Westhuizen admitted to not actually knowing who P.H. Fat is. “I am not up to date with the rap scene. I still found it cool that any name in the music industry, especially a South African artist, would ask me to record for him,” Van Der Westhuizen added. “This is great exposure, and a great opportunity to learn from Mike and learn about the recording process,” Van Der Westhuizen said with great excitement.

THE bands that pop up all around town rarely have as much initial expertise in music as Stellenbosch’s latest edition to the indie rock scene: The Vanilla Colts. Van Wyk Venter, a fourthyear BMus student is one of the founding members of this band that combines jazzy undertones with alternative rock and roll. “We’d like to emphasise that we aren’t promoting anything other than ourselves in the name though.” Venter said. The band agreed, as colt tabacco formed a part of their bonding over relatable lyrics over lost love. “We came together for a love of music and to share our experience,” said Phil-

lip Jordaan, guitarist and vocalist in the band. Their many years of friendship has allowed them to create an intimate style of music that shares something to which any crowd can relate. Both Venter and Jordaan study music and composition, which provides a wealth of unifying knowledge to the group. Drummer, Matthew Hill, who studies LLB with his brother Andrew, originally dubbed their group with an informal name: “Okay, aweh, sick, shot dude”, to reflect how desperately they needed to find their own genre and form a musical identity in the Stellenbosch scene. “We combine all of our backgrounds into something we love doing, and make music we know people would love because we love it,” said Venter.

Their Red Hot Chili Pepper inspired sound infused with freeverse and rap adds a new layer of interest to their style. According to Matthew Hill, individuals like them and many others seek a kind of chemistry that takes a lot of jumping between bands over many years. “We’re trying to write less about girls”, the boys laughed when commenting on the clichés of love songs. “We had people singing along at our first gigs to our songs – that felt awesome” says Philip. This goes to show that finding the people that feel ‘right’ for you can make magic happen. Be sure to catch these boys live at the Groove Getaway festival on 30 and 31 March. You can also end off your first week of class next term by jamming out to the Vanilla Colts at the Art Quad party.

What is a journalist? A journalist is the annoying person asking all the wrong questions, digging where they should not be digging, opening doors that are best left tightly shut. They hound and they harass, constantly on the prowl; looking for a juicy scoop. The events they report on are mercilessly butchered in the newspapers and the good names of the people they cover are left in tatters. Here comes a journalist, looking for sensation. Cover up, cover up. Not so? Not so. Over the past few years the people of South Africa were confronted with a peculiar beast named State Capture. It fed on hard earned tax money (obscene amounts of it) and deposited its refuse in the wallets of a small number of individuals. A dangerous creature indeed. Much more so because, for a long time, it was invisible. South Africans now know about this monster. They can follow its trail of smeary footprints where they stain the very institutions that were put in place to guard democracy: the public protector, the National Prosecuting Authority and, as we now know, the State Security Agency. Who then were the watchdogs following the stench of large-scale corruption? What made up the last line of defence between the little people and those who would unremittingly steal from them?

Easy. Journalism at its very finest. Journalists at their finest are people of immense integrity. They are people who relentlessly pursue the truth and would see it prevail, no matter the cost. They reach towards the far off ideal of objectivity but ensure fair reporting where it can not be obtained. Their sources are the lifeblood of their work and they treat them with painstaking sensitivity and the utmost care. Together, journalists make up what we call a “pillar” of democracy. They are part of the very fabric into which the lives of all South Africans are woven. Democracy does not exist without them. This too is the case with democracy in a microcosm like Stellenbosch University (SU). There are those that preside over the goings on at SU, who make the decisions that affect the little people who populate the lecture rooms and open spaces of the university; its students. Who protects these people from those who would bring them to harm? An independent team of committed watchdogs; owned by no one, answering only to their readers and a code of ethical journalism. In its Vision 2040, SU clearly states its commitment to democracy. SU needs journalists. Those journalists are here, and they are serious.

s stakeholders hang on by their finger nails, and debates reach record levels, what potential does land expropriation hold for South Africa, and how is the process going to be executed? As a Zimbabwean who is not a stranger to the aftermath of land redistribution without compensation, this is a story I enjoy telling. President Ramaphosa promised dialogue and a constitutionally concerned procedure. Whether this guarantees peace is a question best left unanswered, but a wave of fear regarding the sensitivity of the South African economy has swept across society. Fortunately, history has lessons to teach. Here I agree with Edmund Burk when he said, “Those who don’t study history are doomed to repeat it”. Before confiscating a single inch of land, the government should study the Zimbabwean events of two decades ago, where violent land seizures left an unmistakable footprint of destruction on the country. South Africa should bear this in mind when eradicating inequality, consciously designing a peaceful approach not to render land a divisive source of conflict. In a tweet last year, the United States president expressed his grave concern over land reform in South Africa. “I have asked the secretary of state to closely study the South African land and farm seizures and expropriations,” said Trump. Thus I predict the possibility of the United States and European Union collectively imposing economic sanctions on South Africa. The painful result might resonate for years, causing a cataclys-

mic economic decline. Perhaps the government should see this coming and apply some elbow grease to mitigate risks before it is too late. Another recipe for disaster might be a decline in agricultural investments. Authur Maloto, Land and Agricultural Development Bank chairman, warns ‘’If expropriation without compensation is poorly executed, it could result in the Land Bank’s sources of funding drying up’’. Those investors willing to lend will demand very high returns to compensate for the increased risks. Although it is improbable that the above potential afflictions are avoided, I advise all stakeholders not to fear change, but stay candid about the government’s fundamental objective of fixing the Gini coefficient (measure of inequality) which happens to be the current poorest in the world. Solving this will meet the paramount needs of every South African regardless of their political affiliation or race. On the other hand, I am deeply intrigued by the number of people overdosing on the fact that South Africa will have a catastrophic decline in national output similar in magnitude to that faced by Zimbabwe. Statistics point overwhelm-

ingly to the contrary. Only 13% of South African land is suitable for agriculture, and the whole country depends on 22% of that for high scale commercial farming. Thus South African agriculture contributes no more than 3% to the Gross Domestic Product, this paling in comparison to other sectors like manufacturing, contributing 15%. Any ups or downs in the farming sector can bring no significant change to the economy. All efforts to expropriate land must be predicated on establishing a better South Africa in agreement with Nelson Mandela’s declaration that it “belongs to everyone who lives in it”. Hopefully there will be no devastating influence from left wing politics lubricated with selfish desires. John F Kennedy said “Our problems are man-made and therefore they can be solved by man”. I wish South Africa accomplishment in resolving the land dispute. A lesson can be learnt from other nations that managed to counter a similar dilemma through dialogue, for example Malaysia, where a carefully constructed ‘New Economic Policy’ yielded a spectacular success never heard of in history. They managed to simultaneously raise the proportion of wealth owned by Bumiputras from 4% to 20%, and reduce poverty by at least 43.2% within twenty years. As a result, land in Malaysia is no longer an exclusive domain of the wealthy. Since then, the Malaysian economy has been growing faster than weeds. *Dan-Angelus is studying Actuarial science. THERE are many factors at play when considering redistribution without compensation. Most important, I think, first is a moral consideration, the second is a practical consideration. The moral consideration regards people being dispossessed of their property. This requires some historical knowledge as well as an argument for what constitutes ownership. The question of rightful ownership is complicated. Imagine how the first person comes to own a piece of land. How can they become the rightful owner of that piece of land? Is it the first person who saw the land? Is if the first person who walked there, lived there or worked there? This is a difficult question which philosophers have struggled to answer for many centuries. Then there is the historical knowledge. How do we know who lived where and who owned what before the current pattern of ownership came about? We have records that were kept, but they only go back so far, they get lost or destroyed. It is thus problematic for people who were dispossessed of their land to prove that they were in fact the owners of that land before the dispossession. In some instances, if we go far enough back in history, there were certain communities who did not have a concept of property

ownership or private property ownership. All of these factors, make it difficult to right the wrongs of the past. Another moral consideration, which is especially prevalent in the debate around expropriation without compensation, is the question of who should bear the burden of correcting these injustices. When property is expropriated without compensation, the owner of the property, who now no longer has property, is the one bearing the burden. Is this in the interest of justice? If a person A steals person B’s car, we would say that it is more than fair for the car to be expropriated without compensation to B and be given back to A. The problem however arises when B sells the car to C. Should the car still be expropriated from C without any compensation? If C used their own hard earned money to pay for the illegitimate car, should C not be compensated for losing this car? If the car is expropriated without compensation, B goes unpunished, A gets their car back and C bears all of the burden. This cannot be in the interest of justice. Afrikaaps as ’n taalvariëteit van Afrikaans

“Os praat Afrikaaps en ni Afrikaans ni, so ophou vi os reghelp brah,” sê Vannie Kaap. Op 5 en 7 Maart het die Adam Tas-studentevereniging by die Bosch-restaurant met medestudente en ander genooides oor Afrikaaps as ŉ dialek van Afrikaans gesels en wat met hierdie onderwerp gepaard gaan. Afrikaans het verskeie onderlinge verstaanbare dialekte wat ontwikkel het as gevolg van kontak met verskillende immigrante-groepe en inheemse, plaaslike tale. Dus het drie hoofdialekte ontstaan: Kaapse Afrikaans, Oranjerivierafrikaans en Oosgrensafrikaans. Die Kaapse dialek is meestal deur die taal van die Maleisiese slawe geaffekteer. Hulle was slawe wat in die Kaap gewerk het en ŉ vorm van gebroke Portugees gepraat het. Die

Oranjerivierdialekte het ontwikkel weens die invloed van Khoi-tale en -dialekte wat in Namakwaland en Griekwaland Wes gepraat is en die Oosgrensafrikaans het ontwikkel van die settelaars wat Oos na Natal van die Kaap verhuis het. Ten spyte van die standardisering van Afrikaans en die Apartheidsregering wat wette geskep het wat Afrikaans as onderwystaal verpligtend gemaak het, het die gemeenskap wat die oorspronklike vorm van die taal gebruik het, steeds by die voorouergrondslag gehou en Kaaps voortgesit. Die meeste het nie eens die erfenis van die taal besef nie. Op akademiese vlak moet jy in suiwer Afrikaans skryf en dus verwar dit ons oor of daar ŉ regte en verkeerde Afrikaans is. Afrikaaps word as minderwaardig beskou alhoewel meer as 50% van die bevolking wat in die Wes-Kaap “Afrikaans” praat, eintlik Afrikaaps praat. Afrikaans het 'n veelvou-

dige aard, wat deur ons as swart sprekers oorheers word. “Die taal dui nie noodwendig ’n ‘kulturele’ andersheid aan nie, maar wel ’n ander soort wêreld. Nie in terme van Apartheidsbegrippe nie, maar ’n wêreld wat ek graag wil hê mense wat dit nie ken nie, vir hulself toeganklik moet probeer maak, deur hulself daarvoor oop te maak. Kaaps is nie wat sekere Engelse mense in Suid-Afrika Capey noem nie, en ook nie wat sekere Afrikaanse mense Gam-taal noem nie. Kaaps is ’n taal, ’n taal in die sin dat dit die volle lot en noodlot van die mense wat dit praat, dra: ’n taal in die sin dat mense wat dit praat, hul eerste skreeu in die lewe in hierdie taal skreeu en hul doodsroggel in hierdie taal roggel,” sê Adam Small. Hoekom word Die Son en Die Burger as apart gesien en hoekom word Afrikaaps as anders geïdentifiseer? Hoe is Afrikaaps skollie taal?

Hoekom sit bestaande Afrikaanse woordeboeke nie Afrikaaps in nie, hoekom word my taal nie as akademies beskou nie? Dis vrae waarmee ons elke dag sit en wonder, maar alles begin by die akademiese stelsel en Afrikaans as taal moet nie beperk word nie. Die onderwyssisteem moet aangepas en verander word en daar moet beslis ŉ plekkie vir Afrikaaps gemaak word. Hoe

meer Afrikaapse woorde gebruik word, hoe meer bekend sal dit word en dan is die kans daar dat dit in woordeboeke kan verskyn. Afrikaans is tot ŉ sekere mate goed, maar dis ook dinamies. Baie vind Afrikaaps ’n interessante taal en met dit kan mens altyd iets nuuts leer. “Ek twyfel nie aan die toekoms van Afrikaans nie, solank daar mense is wat Afrikaans praat, sal die taal bestaan,” sê Adam Small. My kleurling Afrikaapse aksent bepaal nie my intellek nie, dit vier my kultuur. Ek kan met trots en geen skaamte sê dat ek op die Kaapse Vlakte grootgeword het en dit het my die mens gemaak wat ek vandag is. My taal het my baie dinge geleer. ‘DEURnis’: Nie jou ma se teater nie SZ Minnaar het tydens die Woordfees by die DEURnis-geselskap uitgevind wat hulle opvoerings so uniek maak.

et die afgelope Woordfees het daar ’n eiesoortige teaterbries uit die Noorde die Bosch se takke kom roer. DEURnis, wat volgens hulle Facebook-blad ’n “intieme en eksperimentele benadering” volg, het al by verskeie kunstefeeste oor die land speelvlakke gehad en boonop ’n paar gesogte toekennings ingepalm. So waaroor gaan al die bohaai? DEURnis is een-tot-een, plekspesifieke teater. Dit beteken een gehoorlid kyk ’n toneelstuk waarin net een akteur speel en die optredes vind in allerhande onkonvensionele ruimtes plaas – van ’n karavaan tot ’n beknopte badkamer. ’n Gehoorlid koop ’n pakket wat drie kort toneelstukke van ongeveer 20 minute elk insluit en kyk dit agter mekaar, een vir een. Tydens Woordfees is ruimtes in en om die Quiver Tree-woonstelle as venue ingespan. Gehoorlede kan “saam speel” deur tydens die stuk vrae te antwoord of eenvoudige opdragte uit te voer. Gehoorlede kan ook kies of hulle aangeraak wil word tydens die stuk. Dit is gelukkig nie “onsedelike aanraking” nie verduidelik Rudi Sadler, een van DEURnis se vervaardigers. ’n Akteur sal byvoorbeeld ’n gehoorlid se hand vashou of langsaan hulle kom sit indien hulle ’n rooi plakker dra wat voor die tyd opgeplak word. Gehoorlede wat nie aangeraak wil word nie, kry ’n blou plakker. “Maar dit is selde dat mense die blou plakker kies,” sê Llewellyn Steenkamp wat speel in Hoffie en Witvlag, “want mense wil deel wees van die whole package, die werklike ervaring.” Die gehoorlid word ’n karakter en gevolglik medepligtige. Hierdie aspek van DEURnis het sy uitdagings, maar dit sorg vir ’n boeiende teaterervaring. Gehoorlede moenie dink hulle kan geselsies aanknoop of die stuk in ’n rigting forseer nie.

Dit is belangrik om die persoon deel te laat voel. Die gehoorlid speel ’n karakter en aan die begin is dit moeilik vir die gehoorlid om te bepaal wie die karakter is, maar teen die einde as hy uitstap, wil jy hê dat hy empatie met die karakter moet hê,” ver-

DEURnis is beslis nie foefierig nie. “Ons werk hard dat die een-tot-een nie ’n gimmick is nie. Daar moet kwaliteit wees in die skryfwerk, regie en in die toneelspel,” sê Sadler. “Ons wou hê dat dit ’n volledige toneelstuk moes wees met ’n goeie teks, anders raak mense moeg daarvoor,” sê Johan van der

Since August of 2018, The Clean Team has hired four permanent cleaners.

Starting this business venture has allowed Glanvill to provide a dynamic and vibey cleaning service aimed at students, while simultaneously creating positive employment opportunities for women around Stellenbosch. Since graduating with his honours in Accounting and starting his articles this year, Glanvill has partnered up with his good friend, Danielle Gerber, who now oversees the day-to-day running of the business. Gerber is in her third year of her LLB degree and is responsible for organising bookings and liaising with cutomers and cleaners. The duo’s aim is to make the cleaning experience as efficient as possible. In order to do so, The Clean

Team provides all of their own equipment and supplies so the customer does not need to. For The Clean Team duo, the most rewarding part of the business is being able to provide meaningful employment for women to further provide for their families in need. Both Glanvill and Gerber acknowledged that juggling a start-up business with academic pressures can be challenging, but included some advice for entrepreneurial students. “It’s important to remember you are still a student, even if you are an entrepreneur. You don’t want to risk losing both because you have a business,” Gerber said.

Daar is ’n goeie balans van stukke, van komedies tot fisiese teater, maar alle stukke is nie vir sensitiewe kykers nie. Van die ernstiger stukke mag sommige gehoorlede ontstel. In Rou is die akteur naak – en jy sien die full monty – en sommige stukke raak donker temas aan soos onder meer verkragting, moord en aborsie. Gehoorlede kan egter enige tyd die stuk laat ophou indien hulle ongemaklik voel. Maar verskillende gehoorlede tree verskillend op. En is daar ’n verskil tussen Kaapse gehore en gehore in die Noorde? Volgens Ben Pienaar, wat in Net en Anders speel, is daar definitief ’n verskil. “Ek dink in die Kaap is mense baie meer toeganklik en gewoond aan ’n verskeidenheid van teaterkonvensies” vertel hy. Die mense is oop en aanvaar die manier hoe jy die stories vertel. Ignatius van Heerden, wat in die fisiese teaterstuk Droom speel, is gehore in die Kaap nie noodwendig maklike gehore nie. “In die Kaap, en in Stellenbosch spesifiek, is mense so blootgestel aan alle soort kunsvorme en kuns is soos die hart van die Kaap. Hulle is gewoond aan meer, maar daarom is dit ’n moeiliker gehoor om voor te speel”, sê hy. Maar maak nie saak wie dit sien nie, Van Heerden dink dit is belangrik dat mense die DEURnis-ervaring probeer. “Jy kommunikeer met baie meer mense as voor ’n groot gehoor,” sê hy en skerts ook, “ ’n groot gehoor mag dalk vir jou meer geld inbring.” Daar is ongelukkig nog nie ’n tweede speelvlak vir DEURnis in die Kaap vasgemaak nie.

Aflos sit nie atlete af nie

ie misverstand tussen die Matie vroue-aflosspan by die eerste Varsity Atletiekbyeenkoms van die seisoen het veroorsaak dat dié span van die wedloop gediskwalifiseer is. Lara Johnson, ’n eerstejaar BCom (Bestuurswetekenskap)student en lid van die span, het verduidelik dat ’n misrekening van spoed veroorsaak het dat sy nie betyds die aflosstokkie aan haar spanmaat kon oorgee nie. “Ons het ’n nuwe strategie probeer waarin ek tien meter verder moes hardloop. Teen die tyd wat ek die stok vir [my spanmaat] moes gee, was ek te vinnig en sy te stadig en toe mis ons mekaar in die tradeoff-zone,” het sy gesê. Dié glips het die Maties in vyfde plek op die Varsity Atletiek punteleer gelaat. Wynand Du Toit, ’n finalejaar BA(Sportwetenskap)-student en verteenwoordiger van Maties Atletiek, het verduidelik dat ’n

verandering in die aflosreëls dalk te blameer is. “Die reëls van die aflos het so bietjie verander. Die tweede stretch is nou 30m waar dit in die verlede korter was,” het hy gesê. Janke van Wyk, ’n finalejaar BEd-student en die Maties se atletiekkaptein, sê oor die strategie: “Ons wou die backstraight so lank as moontlik maak en die oorgee kort maak. Dit maak die risiko [vir diskwalifikasie] hoër. Dit het briljant gewerk by die mans aflos, maar ongelukkig het dit nie by die vrouens gewerk nie.” Die ranglys van die verskeie universiteite wat deelneem is volgens die Internasionale Assosiasie van Atletiek Federasies (IAAF) regulasies bereken. Volgens die regulasies tel die aflos ’n noemenswaardige deel van die eindpunt by elke byeenkoms. Elke wolk het darem sy silwer randjie. Vir die Maties-atletiekspan het die randjie gekom in die vorm van atleet Divan Manuel, ’n tweedejaar-BA (Sportswetenskap)-student en verspringer.

Dus het hulle besluit om nie ŉ span vir Erica in te skryf nie, en die saak toe daar gelaat. Dit geld vir al vier toernooie waarvoor hulle sou kon inskryf, wat die eerstejaarstoernooi, die winterliga, 5-a-side, en die koshuisliga is. Wat die winterliga betref, kon hulle net vyf spelers werf uit die koshuis, so hulle sou glad nie kon deelneem nie. Dus het hulle nie

vir eerstejaarsproewe opgedaag nie, aangesien hulle nie ’n span het nie, en sover hulle weet nie geregistreer was nie. Hislop voeg by: “Ons het nie ŉ aktiewe rol geneem om in te skryf vir die eerstejaarsliga nie, toe het ons net aangeneem dat ons nie deel van die liga is nie.” Hulle was wel geregistreer vir al vier die ligas, en is toe beboet omdat hulle nie by die proewe was nie. Gevolglik is hulle geskuif na poel B, vanaf poel A. Die koshuis wat voordeel hieruit trek, is Nerina, wat nou in Erica se plek in poel A is. Erica is ook gediskwalifiseer uit die winterliga uit. Nerina het baie laat vir die winterliga ingeskryf, en gevolglik was hulle nie seker dat hulle ooit speelkans gaan kry nie, so hulle is baie bly oor die skuif.

Frances Minnaar, een van Nerina se hokkie verteenwoordigers, sê hulle sien baie uit na die seisoen, veral met dié dat hulle nou in die A poel is. Dit gaan ŉ uitdaging wees as gevolg van die feit dat hulle ŉ liga opgeskuif het. “Dit sit baie druk op ons, ek voel wel ons span die jaar is beter as die een verlede jaar.” Minnaar sê hulle is bly oor die winterliga wat die jaar soveel vroeër afskop. Almal kry baie meer speeltyd in, en die registrasiefooi wat elke speler moet betaal is dan heel billik. Volgens Scharlize Crafford van Maties Hokkie, gaan die 2019 seisoen die langste een wees wat sy kan onthou, met ongeveer 312 wedstryde wat deur die jaar op die astrobane gespeel gaan word, vanaf Februarie tot Oktober.

THE dream of representing their country has become a reality for three Maties Ultimate Frisbee players. Petro van Eck, Janco Heese and Johanna Smit were recently selected for the U24 Ultimate Wild Dogs, who will be representing South Africa at the World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF) 2019 World Under-24 Ultimate Championships (WU24) in Heidelberg, Germany. The three Maties made their way into the team after showing an interest in playing for the side and going through trials in November last year, where, after the first round, a squad of thirty-three players were

selected to play in the final round of trials in Johannesburg. The final squad of twenty-four players were selected, including the three proud Maties athletes. “I am very grateful to have been selected for this team together with two other students from Stellenbosch, Janco Heese and Johanna Smit. I look forward to getting to know the whole squad a lot better as time goes on,” said Van Eck. Smit said that she was “ecstatic” when she heard that she was chosen for the U24 Wild Dogs team. “I also realised it is a great

responsibility and therefore I felt quite a lot of pressure as well. Even though it is very enjoyable it is also very important to remain focused in terms of managing academics and to still constantly be improving in every skill as much as possible to not let the team down,” she added. Maties Ultimate Frisbee provided a valuable platform for the three players to be involved at a national level. “I did not know this sport existed until I joined the casual Maties games, called pickup, and they then asked me to join the club – they taught me all I know about frisbee and I made wonderful friends,” Smit said. onday night was a solid, but tiring evening for undefeated FNB Maties as they managed to clinch a 24–13 home turf win over the FNB University of Johannesburg (UJ) side that proved to be an equal competitor. Within a few seconds of the kick-off at the Danie Craven Stadium, full back Anton du Toit scored a tremendous try. Maties didn’t capitalise on the five points and the small celebration was cut short when UJ flyhalf, Mashudu Raphunga, brought the score to 5–3 with a sound penalty kick. Maties got their noses further in front with a sprinkle of magic between flyhalf Jordan Chait and number eight Jesse Johnson, which resulted in Johnson touching down under the goalposts. The men from Maties might have thought of their small 12–3 advantage as a cushion between them and their opponents, but they

were in deep waters again after UJ lock, Malembe Mpofu, powered over the line to score. Raphunga converted and narrowed the gap to 12–10, just moments before the 20 minute break. A missed penalty by Raphunga during the second quarter kept Maties in the lead. Things were, however, too close for comfort, and another successful penalty put UJ in the driver’s seat at 13–12. This caused quite a commotion in the stadium as Maties, the undefeated team thus far in the season, were now losing the game. During the second half, Maties came back in full force and was awarded a penalty following a big scrum, spearheaded by hooker HJ Luus. The ensuing moments saw a kick from Chait floating through the uprights, restoring Maties to a 15–13 lead. Chait added two more penalties to his tally and looked like he was putting on a kicking clinic. 77 minutes into the game Maties led 21–13.

As the final siren rang, Chait lined up the ball for a last penalty, awarded after a collapsed scrum. His successful effort secured a 24–13 victory for the men from Stellenbosch, and sent UJ back to the drawing board. “This was the first time this season that Maties was behind at some point,” said Ernst van Rhyn, Maties captain. He added that it wasn’t the team’s best game as they made a lot of unnecessary mistakes and conceded penalties that put them under pressure. According to Van Rhyn, it was vital that the team experienced pressure before they reached a semi-final or a final, so that they know how to act under it. “It’s a great learning experience for the younger guys in the team,” said Van Rhyn. HJ Luus from Maties was awarded the ‘FNB Player That Rocks’, and Jesse Johnson was awarded the ‘Steers Kinging Award’ to cap an already successful night for Maties. The team will have a break this week before travelling to Bloemfontein to play against the University of the Free State’s FNB Shimlas on 25 March.
