here is still no clarity on when this year’s Student Representative Council (SRc) elections will resume.

Elections were postponed “until further notice” last week, after a ruling by the Student Court found eight members guilty of breaking certain election rules.

The candidature of Bernard Pieters, Ashwin Maloy, Thea Bester, Francois Henning, Jacobus Maass, Netanje Van Niekerk, Roderick Leonard and Selmie Crous was suspended from the election pending a full investigation into irregularities. The candidates are all members of AfriForum.

The court found there were irregularities with the eight members’ relating to campaign posters, electioneering, monetary limits and attendance of caucuses. AfriForum was asked to remove all election posters not satisfying the requirements.

Pieters said that AfriForum complied and removed all election

posters not satisfying the requirements from campus.

“The SRc election process have been postponed pending an investigation, however we look forward to the process being completed, especially after the positive report the convener filed yesterday to the student court,” he said.

According to the Student Constitution, candidates may campaign in any way that doesn’t violate the law, university rules, the Constitution, SRc regulations or the rules laid down by the Election Convenor.

The Constitution further states that the Election Convenor must place a limit on the monetary amount that candidates can spend on their campaigns.

The Election Convenor must also lay down procedures and rules for the enforcement of that limitation.

If a candidate, the helpers or supporters of a candidate violate this limit, the Election Convenor may order the candidate to remove or

destroy election material, abandon the activities in question or, where the conduct is detrimental to other candidates, declare the candidature of the candidate invalid.

The monetary limit for this year was set on R650. However, the Student Court was informed that Afriforum’s members spent over R2800.

Roderick Leonard, an AfriForum candidate, never had chance to put up his posters due to receiving an email from management stating his exclusion from the election process.

According to Pieters, when asked about the decision management failed to respond.

“We have asked for clarity, but have received no answers to date, although it has been promised on various occasions.

“It is quite unsettling that management are able to make such arbitrary decisions, without a reason given.

“Thus we are still engaged with them, trying to get answers to these questions but will approach the high

court if they persist to exclude Mr Leonard.”

AfriForum appealed the decision last Tuesday.

The Appeal Court, consisting of two professors from the faculty of law, rejected the appeal last Thursday because the final order has not yet been issued.

“If Stellenbosch University (SU) succeeds in excluding our candidates, no SRc election will take place. The remaining candidates (a lot of them EFF and Open Stellenbosch) will be automatically elected as SRc members. This means that all SU students will have been deprived of their right to choose their SRc. “We are serious about getting an SRc elected that would stand up for the rights of all students.

“What happened in the past few weeks has provided AfriForum with an unexpected opportunity to demonstrate our resolve to do so,” said Pieters.

When contacted, Election Convenor Cal Links failed to respond.

POKEMON GO

Campus now also a popular hunting ground GIZELLEDE GÖTZ

P

okémon Go is the latest craze that has driven our generation to get up, get out and catch ‘em all.

The popular anime TV series, filled with fictional creatures known as Pokémon, is now available in a gaming format for Android and iOS devices.

The game enables users to become Pokémon Trainers, fulfilling childhood dreams of becoming Ash Ketchum by catching Pokémon in ‘real life’.

It’s difficult to believe that there are still people who haven’t heard of the game, seeing as our own campus has turned into very popular Pokémon hunting grounds.

There is a Poké Gym at the JH Marais statue where you will most definitely find members of the three Pokémon teams battling to claim it.

When sitting in class you can see the colours of the Poké Gyms changing between blue, red and yellow by the Finding a rare Pokémon, like a Dratini or Drowzee, awakens the same emotion as finding a R20 in the pocket of those jeans you haven’t worn for a while. On the other hand, finding a Pidgey or Rattata brings about the kind of nostalgia associated with mom’s spaghetti dish you’ve been eating your whole childhood.

Having a coffee and hunting Pokémon at the same time is extremely easy when in Stellenbosch, seeing as landmarks are around every corner.

Just walking up Dorp Street you will find multiple Poké Stops and Poké Gyms. You are most likely to locate Pokémon in areas with a lot of cellular activity, you wouldn’t find as many Pokémon on a farm in Franschhoek as you would on campus.

You might find yourself enjoying Pokémon Hunting more than studying, but try to remember why you are here in the first place and leave the hunting for study breaks or weekends.

Andeline Wieland, ’n derdejaar dramastudent en inwoner van Lydia, het nooit gedink dat sy in hakskoene voor beoordelaars die titel van Mej. Namibië se eerste prinses sal verower nie.

Alles het begin toe Wieland op sestienjarige ouderdom vir Mej. Tiener Namibië ingeskryf het.

Met geen modelervaring agter haar naam nie, het Wieland met die kroon weggestap.

“Ons weet nogsteeds nie hoe ek gewen het nie, maar van toe af het die gogga gebyt.”

Wieland het gevoel dat Mej. Tiener Namibië nie gemeenskaps-diens as voorvereiste het nie, verkeerd is.

“Hoekom het jy hierdie titel en jy gebruik dit vir niks anders as net ‘ek is mooi’ nie?”

Sy het self betrokke geraak in die gemeenskap en besef dat dít is wat sy met haar lewe wil doen.

Vandag het sy haar eie liefdadigheidsorganisasie wat rokke aan

minderbevoorregte meisies skenk.

Ná Wieland uitgevind het dat sy die top twaalf van Mej. Namibië gehaal het, moes sy sak en pak Windhoek toe trek.

“Vir ’n maand lank was dit fotosessies en aandfunksies, waar ’n mens met die borge moes gesels en mense oortuig het.

“Ons moes ook na verskillende gemeenskapsdienste toe gaan om te sien hoe ons kon help.”

Wieland is egter nie net ’n mooi gesiggie nie, maar ook ’n opkomende aktrise.

“Ek het gesê ek gaan hier uitstap, of ek nou wen of nie, met mense wat weet wie ek is, want in die dramabedryf is dit wat mens nodig het,” sê sy.

Sy voel dat die ondersteuning wat sy ná die kompetisie van die publiek op sosiale media ontvang het, regtig ongelooflik was.

“Op die ou end van die dag kom dit daarop neer dat elke meisie moet besef dat al wen daar net een, kan ons elkeen nog ’n verskil maak met ons eie veldtogte.”

Volgens Wieland is daar steeds baie mense wat ’n wanbegrip oor skoonheidskompetisies het.

“It has become immensely difficult to fairly represent every person, interest and opinion within your residence. It is emotionally exhausting to constantly work under so much pressure. Although the lack of interest among senior students to stand for leadership positions might have certain disadvantages, I do not think we should underestimate the young leaders who now have the opportunity to define their own narrative within their communities.”

Anel du Plessis, onderprim (Irene): “Kampusleiers was die jaar onder geweldige druk as gevolg van gebeure op kampus en protes aksies. ’n Groter aktivistiese bewussyn op kampus het gemaak dat HK lankal nie meer oor skakels, kuier en ’n maroon blazer gaan nie. Daar word verwag van studenteleiers om ’n standpunt te kan inneem oor kom-

plekse sake en aktief deel te neem aan die kampusdebat. Daar is ook ’n algemene afname in die vertroue en respek vir tradisionele leierskap. Ek dink nie daar is naastenby genoeg ondersteuning van die universiteit af nie en dit is definitief iets wat dringende aandag nodig het.”

Pieter Kloppers, direkteur van studentekomitees:

“Dit is as gevolg van hoe moeilik dit was om ’n HK-lid in die afgelope termyn te wees. Die mense wat blootgestel was wil dit nie weer doen nie.

Ek dink wel nie dat dit ’n langtermyn ding sal wees nie.”

Chantal Swartz, inwonende hoof van Sonop:

“Wanneer studente genader word om hulle beskikbaar te stel vir posisies, skram sommige weg. Die rede is dat van die studente voel die lading van die posisies te veel is en sal inmeng met hul akademiese tyd. Ek glo dat dit sal verbeter in die toekoms as die posisies en die doel daarvan hersien word en beter gestruktureer word.”

Melissa Vogel, onderprim (Nerina): “Getting exposure to things happening isn’t a bad thing, I just think students applying for HK aren’t prepare to be so politically involved. It’s a lot to juggle and sometimes the passion gets lost.”

Verder is sy ook nie iemand wat stilsit en gelukkig met die eenvoudige is nie.

“Ek sal graag wil hê dat ander mense my as iemand moet sien wat grense uitdaag en oorsteek.

“Ek swot drama en hoewel ek weet daar is nie só ’n industrie in Namibië nie, wil ek die Namibiërs uitdaag om die kunstenaars te wees wat hulle nog altyd wou wees,” sê sy.

Wieland se raad aan studente wat aan skoonheidskompetisies in die toekoms wil deelneem, is dat hulle dit nie moet doen net vir die titel nie.

“Moenie dit doen omdat jy wil sê jy is Mej. Suid-Afrika of so nie, doen dit omdat jy oor iets passievol is waarmee jy regtig ’n verskil wil maak in jou gemeenskap.”

Koshuis heet dalk binnekort Sonbreek AN-MARI SNYMAN

’n Man op ’n vrouekoshuis se huiskomitee en ’n vrou op ’n manskoshuis se huiskomitee.

Dít is ’n voorstel wat gemaak is en moontlik binne die volgende termyn in ’n hele paar koshuise ’n werklikheid sal word.

Eendrag is die eerste koshuis wat dié moontlikheid by hul huisvergadering bespreek het.

Volgens Ben Moolman, Eendrag se prim vir die termyn wat voorlê, het hulle ’n kritiese bespreking in ’n onlangse huisvergadering gehad om ’n vroulike lid van een van ons cluster HK-lede in te sluit.

“Ons het baie positiewe terugvoer van die huis af gekry.

“Ons sal ’n kennisgaping oorsteek wat eens tussen mans- en vrouekoshuise bestaan het. Hierdie tipe veranderinge is definitief on the cards vir 2017 en 2018.”

Hoewel hierdie moontlikheid verskeie reaksies uitlok, sommige ekstaties en ander skepties, is Pieter Kloppers, die US se direkteur van studentekomitees, positief oor die idee.

“Ek dink dit is uitstekend. Die moontlikheid sal nou daar wees om ’n afwesige stem te verteenwoordig.

“Dit sal regtig fantasties wees indien koshuise daarvan gebruik maak,” het Kloppers gesê.

Diamond and James talks about their term DANIELLE KRUGER

T

he SRC’s term started with a bang. There was no time for group dynamics to form before the students’ movement in South Africa as well as at the core of Stellenbosch University began.

From August lat year, a diverse group of leaders were thrown together to solve pivotal issues, such as handling the Eisenberg crisis followed by the Fees Must Fall movement as well as the outsourcing crisis.

Axolile Qina and James de Villiers talked to Die Matie about their term on the SRC.

A xolile ‘Diamond’ Qina, chairperson of the SRC How do you feel about being the first ever black SRC chairman at Stellenbosch University?

I was the first black President at Helderberg Men’s residence for the year 2014-2015, but being the first black male chairperson of the SRC has been humbling and nerve-wracking as there is a great expectation tied to the feeling.

Do you believe you achieved your vision as the SRC? Yes. There were three main goals in our strategic planning that were of importance: language policy, discrimination, and critical engagement.

This was achieved by the changing of the language policy which was a collected effort with SRC members, the Academic Affairs Council and management.

Discrimination was embodied in the #EndRapeCulture campaign, with platforms and events created for the most marginalised students.

What would you say the challenges for your SRC term was?

The biggest challenge for us as an SRC was to unite a seemingly divided campus, working towards a vision and ideal we can all believe in.

There were many issues that we were expected to solve, and yet all serving on our first term on the SRC we still had to learn how everything worked and yet ensure transformation at Stellenbosch University.

What would you do differently if you have foresight?

There is a lot one would do differently.

One thing in particular I would have done better is to ensure better trust and understanding within the

SRC. If I ensured better relations and understanding within the team I believe we could have been a better example of unity, something this campus still needs to see.

What have you learnt as the chairman of the SRC? I have learnt that leadership is complex and requires a diverse perspective in order to ensure change.

It is also a process of learning, where you must always remain humble and open to learn from others even though you are in a position to lead.

What changes do you believe Stellenbosch University still needs to undergo in the foreseeable future?

Stellenbosch University needs a paradigm shift where we live based on our values, where the values of the University become the frame in which we ensure an inclusive, innovative and future-focused campus.

We need to start to build towards the reality of 2030 now in all we do, by shifting the culture of the University to be representative of the ideal we are strategically working towards.

What is your advice for the SRC of 2016/2017?

If you want to lead and truly transform Stellenbosch to being inclusive you need to work together in unity and embrace your diversity for the sake of the many students you are appointed to represent.

James de Villiers, vicechairperson of the SRC What would you say the challenges for your SRC term was?

I believe challenges were derived from the unique perspectives that we had as an SRC. We are probably the most diverse SRC that this campus has ever seen, differing in residences and PSOs, backgrounds, race gender, and sexuality.

This is a big benefit…but it is also a challenge. The challenge with this arises because we are so diverse it is very easy for the SRC members to spilt into two factions.

What is your viewpoint of your SRC team response to the key issues in your term as SRC? The first letter we sent to campus addressed Luister. The previous SRC’s downfall was that they did not have someone that was a part of the Luis-

Our SRC, had the unique perspective that was part of that grouping.

Thus immediately that grouping felt more comfortable as it was not only a white person addressing that issue it was a black person as well.

In regards to Open Stellenbosch we decided to champion the language change. I am happy that this year we have finally found a solution to the issue of languages, reaching the best compromise which does not exclude students.

I think it is unfair that people immediately associate Open Stellenbosch with the SRC as the majority of the SRC were not part of the movement.

Furthermore, I believe that Fees Must Fall was a difficult situation and the SRC did the best that they could have done.

We were there, we were present and we challenged management.

I also think we did well in challenging the conversation of Fees Must Fall on a national platform as in our press releases we called on the Minister to step up.

This approach was different to other SRC. We tried to put the blame on not only to the university but also on the national government.

There has been talk on campus about the SRC representing themselves and not the students. What do you think about this?

I don’t know what SRC members get for themselves for joining the SRC. I can only speak on behalf of myself when saying that there is honestly no way in this world that I would have joined the SRC with ulterior motives as it is too much work, too many sleepless nights and you spend more money on depression and anxiety pills than you actually get out of it.

I stood for the SRC as I thought that I wanted to serve my campus and I was frustrated of standing on the side lines.

What changes do you believe Stellenbosch University still needs to undergo in the foreseeable future?

I would like to see the diversity in our

student numbers increase and amongst the facility. I speak under correction that the lecturers are only 10% diverse.

Although residences have already come along way, I still think that residence culture need to diversify and take a stand like Huis Visser who cancelled their beauty pageant this year as they asked themselves if this is the values that they wanted to strive for.

I think the disciplinary committee also needs to be addressed to ensure that there are no grey areas.

What would you do differently if you have foresight?

Speaking out of my personal capacity I am disappointed at how the SRC handled the black facing incident.

I still think we made a mistake, we should not have judged those students so harshly.

I am heartbroken for those students as they received so much undeserving hate.

I feel strongly that the SRC should have apologised.

If I did have foresight then I would have spoken up much more harshly against the actions of the SRC at that time.

Irene kitchen converted into second halaal kitchen on SU campus ARLEEN STONE

Stellenbosch University (SU) has decided to convert the kitchen of Irene Residence into a fully certified halaal kitchen.

The only other halaal kitchen in a SU campus residence is at Metanoia.

Both residences are contracted with the catering company Fedics.

The spokesperson for Fedics, Zandra Langenhoven, said that this conversion did not impact the service in the Irene dining hall, but the menu was consequently adjusted to meet the requirements of a halaal-status kitchen.

“All pork products were removed from the menu and substituted by pas-

trami (beef) or macon products.

“Macon is prepared in a similar manner to bacon, with the meat being cured by soaking it in large quantities of salt or brine; the name Macon being a combination word of Mutton and bacon.

“At this stage no further kitchens are to be converted to halaal kitchens. Future decisions to convert more kitchens will be at the discretion of the University,” said Langenhoven.

The prim of Irene, Lize-Mari Doubell, in association with the residence’s house mother and the Spiritual Committee of the residence, have or-

ganised a formal event on 11 August at 12:30 in Irene dining hall to celebrate the halaal-status of the kitchen.

“The reason for hosting this event

is to create awareness of what Irene now has to offer in terms of inclusivity and the fact that we can cater for more students in our community,” said prim Doubell.

“I feel as though I have reached one of my goals as prim of Irene, I was able to help transform our residence into a space that more people can call home.

“This event will give us the opportunity to bring stakeholders of Irene and the university together, and to spread awareness to communities who would wish to make use of Irene as a venue,” said Doubell.

Celeste Stassen, head of the Irene Spiritual Committee, said that they are very excited about this most recent development.

“We as a committee strive towards creating a platform where people can express their different forms of faith and religion. We respect diversity and feel that this is a big step towards taking the level of inclusivity in Irene higher and higher.”

Rikus Keyser, eienaar en bestuurder van The Happy Oak, het besluit om die restaurant tydelik oop te hou. Bouwerk en die vervanging van die balke sal binne die volgende twee weke plaasvind.

Keyser sê dat kliënte asseblief geduld in die komende weke moet hê.

“In die verlede is sulke funksies al hier gehou, maar niks soos hierdie insident het al gebeur nie.”

Die restaurant en kroeg sal nie heeltemal gesluit word nie, maar ’n tydelike kroeg is opgestel in die binnehof van die gebou om dit veiliger en gemakliker vir kliënte te maak.

Bouers is tans besig om ’n PVC afdak oor die oop area in die binnehof te sit. Die koste van die herstelwerk is egter nog nie bepaal nie.

erlede week het ’n onskuldige skoolreünie amper in ’n katastrofe verander toe ‘old boys’ van Paarl Gimnasium op die tweede vloer van The Happy Oak bymekaar gekom het.

Beeldmateriaal van die restaurant se sekuriteitskameras toon hoe ’n groep van die oudleerders in goeie gees in die middel van die boonste vertrek se houtvloer bymekaar gekom het vir die sing van ’n geeslied.

Die groot hoeveelheid mense gepaard met die springbewegings wat hulle uitgevoer het, was te veel vir die balke wat die tweede vloer ondersteun.

Gevolglik het drie van die balke gebreek en moes die gebou ontruim word.

Brandweerdienste was vinnig op die toneel om die veiligheid van die gebou te assesseer.

‘Only ATKV rules should apply’ says KuKo chair INGRID HEŸDENREŸCH

The controversy surrounding kleinsêr groups, with members of a different residence or PSO, taking part in this year’s kleinsêr competition is down to a misinterpretation of the rules.

So said Jacolene Grobbelaar, vicechair of KuKo (SRc Culture Committee).

Red flags were raised earlier this year when it was discovered that some women taking part in Osler’s kliensêr group were residents of Hippokrates and Huis Francie. However, Osler is not an isolated case.

According to a statement released to sêr leaders by KuKo before the start of preliminary rounds, the rules regarding mixed-residence sêr groups have not been reviewed by previous management for the past five years.

This is because of “the complex situation Stellenbosch University (SU) has with residences and PSO’s (Private Student Organisations), thus the blind eye that was given to those who violated it.”

The Afrikaanse Taal en Kultuur Vereniging (ATKV) rules state that all members in a particular sêr team must have been a member of his or her ‘residence’ for at least three months, or must be allowed, in terms of the relevant university’s rules of participation, to take part in the activities of the ‘residence.’

According to Marike Madsen-Leibold, chair of KuKo, it was decided in February that only the ATKV’s rules should apply to all universities and that universities should no longer be allowed to make their own rules of participation.

“This was never applied to the written rules this year and leaves a grey area in terms of residences and PSO’s who do not have enough members interested in sêr (a minimum of ten people is required in a sêr group to qualify for nationals) or who choose not to participate,” said Madsen-Leibold.

Grobbelaar said that since the Tygerberg campus is not as connected to the Stellenbosch campus and operates in a different way, their interpretation of the ATKV’s rules made it acceptable for them to take part with members of different residences or PSO’s under one name.

The sêr leader said that if the ATKV’s rules are not applied at the university, nothing would stop the best sêr members of each residence or PSO forming their own team, consequently eliminating the chances of any other group winning.

This would also take the opportunity away from members of residences or PSO’s who may not necessarily be good enough for these “supersêr” groups, but would have been good enough to be on their residence or PSO’s team.

After concerns were raised, KuKo had to decide on whether to eliminate the sêr groups who were taking part as more than one residence or PSO, or to let them continue taking part in the competition.

“It was decided that they could still take part in the competition since they did not disobey the rules, they only interpreted it differently,” said Grobbelaar.

Following the unhappiness due to the mixed sêr groups taking part this

year, KuKo filed a motion which was voted in by the PK (Prim Committee).

An excerpt from the motion states: “The joining process must be facilitated by the SRc of Arts and Culture and must have the permission of the PK chair and PK vice-chair, the organisers of the specific KuKo cultural event as well as the Primarius/ Primaria of all the residences or PSO’s involved.

With specific regards to KuKo Kleinsêr the following additional rules will have to be implemented: 1. A majority of at least two thirds of the participating sêr group that student would like to join must consist of students from the residence or PSO under whose name the group will be participating.

2. A mixed group must compete under the name of the residence or PSO with the two third majority of members.

3. A mixed group will not be allowed to consist out of a combination of more than three different residences or PSO’s.

4. Students from the same non-partic-

ipating residence or PSO will not be allowed to sing for different participating residences or PSO’s.

Each student’s case will, also, be handled individually and not in groups, and individual permission from all above mentioned parties must be gained.

5. Exceptions will be made for special individual cases if all above mentioned parties unanimously deem fit.”

This motion is to be implemented into SU’s internal sêr competition from next year, pending approval from the ATKV. The sêr leader said that even if these rules get applied from next year onwards, it does not change the fact that this year’s competition was unfair towards residences and PSO’s who were not mixed this year.

Madsen-Leibold said that she regrets that people feel that this year’s competition was unfair, but that KuKo has done as much as they can to accommodate everyone involved and to ensure that the hard work of all sêr groups gets acknowledged.

Swot nou gratis aanlyn JANA WENTZEL

Die Universiteit Stellenbosch (US) se eerste gratis en oop aanlynkursus (in Engels bekend as ’n MOOC – Massive Open Online Course) is nou oop vir registrasie.

Dié vier weke lange kursus sal deur prof Yusef Waghid, professor aan die Fakulteit Opvoedkunde, aangebied word.

Dié kursus sal amptelik 19 September begin en sal handel oor Afrika-filosofie van die onderwys.

Die kursus, getiteld Teaching for change: An African philosophical approach, sal daarop ingestel wees om onderrig en leer in ’n Afrika-konteks te verstaan en gesprekke sal ondersteun word deur voorafopgeneemde video’s, artikels, aktiwiteite, kursusmateriaal en werkopdragte.

Dr Faiq Waghid, raadgewer in die Sentrum vir Leertegnologieë en MOOC-projekbestuur, het gesê dat enigeen wat toegang tot universiteitskennis verlang, vir hierdie kursus kan inskryf.

Verder sê Waghid ook dat dit die eerste MOOC van hierdie soort is en dat daar na verwagting meer as 4 000 studente sal registreer.

In Prof Yusef Waghid Oktober 2015 het die US ’n ooreenkoms gemaak met een van die wêreld se voorste sosialeleerplatforms.

Hierdie platform genaamd, FutureLearn is by die 26ste Internasionale Raad vir Oop en Afstandsonderwys, oftewel International Council for Open and Distance Education – ICDE, gemaak.

Antoinette van der Merwe, senior direkteur van Leer en Onderrigverryking aan die US, sê dat hierdie vennootskapsooreenkoms wat gesluit is, sentrums van uitnemendheid in navorsing binne die universiteit dit moontlik sal maak om kursusse op die FutureLearn-platform aan te bied.

Hierdie vennootskap bied aan die universiteit dus die geleentheid om ’n groter verskeidenheid aanlyn kursusse op die FutureLearn-platform te ondersoek.

FutureLearn het wêreldwyd tans meer as 4 miljoen geregistreerde gebruikers.

Uit 190 lande is daar altesaam vyf miljoen registrasies vir kursusse.

Die US is nou een van byna 80 van die wêreld se voorste universiteite wat gratis aanlyn kursusse van die hoogste gehalte oor ’n wye verskeidenheid vakgebiede aanbied.

Waghid glo dat hierdie beweging voordelig is vir die universiteit, want dit bied vir die US geleentheid om op globale skaal met die res van die wêreld in interaksie te tree.

‘Broers’ wil net vuur en musiek maak In ’n oorvol Aandklas sukkel mens om dié talentvolle mans op die verhoog te sien.

Spoegwolf het dit weereens reggekry om studente al singend in hul massas te laat saamdrom en die samesyn te geniet. Die Spoegwolf-lede, Danie du Toit, Moskou du Toit, Albert van der Merwe en Chris von Wielligh, sê hulle is nie hier om iets te bewys nie. Hulle wil saam musiek maak as ‘broers’ en hul tyd op die verhoog saam geniet. Jana Wentzel het met hulle gesels.

Julle het onlangs die geleentheid gekry om saam met Francois van Coke en Karen Zoid by Carnival City op te tree met die Toe Vind Ek Jou-toer. Sou julle dit as ’n hoogtepunt in julle musiekloopbaan beskryf en kry julle nog stage fright met sulke groot vertonings?

Dit was regtig ’n baie groot vertoning en dit was ’n groot eer om te kon open vir musikante soos Francois en Karen. Dit was ’n groot verhoog en daar was baie mense in die gehoor wat stip na ons gekyk het, so dit was maar stresvol. Ons sou dit nie noodwendig stage fright noem nie, eerder ‘senuweeagtig’. Mens is altyd bekommerd oor wat moontlik verkeerd kan gaan, maar gelukkig is die kans vir foute by sulke groot vertonings skaars.

Na watter plaaslike musikante luister julle vir inspirasie?

Danie: Desmond & The Tutu’s, Moses Metro Man, Hemelbesem Moskou: Fokofpolisiekar Chris: Fokofpolisiekar Albert: Zinkplaat Watter plaaslike musikante dink julle kry te min krediet vir die gehalte musiek wat hulle maak?

Danie: Moses Metro Man, Deon Meiring en Bittereinder. Hulle is regtig almal sulke goeie musikante en dis hartseer dat alle musikante nie dieselfde publisiteit kry nie.

Wat is julle gunsteling liedjie om by ’n show op te voer?

“Somersetwes”, is definitief een van ons gunstelinge.

Dis baie rock en roll. Partykeer raak ons sommer kreatief en doen ’n liedjie net daar en dan, maar ons vergeet gewoonlik na die show hoe die liedjie gaan en dan kan ons dit nie weer opvoer nie.

Wat is die most awkward moment wat julle al tydens ’n show beleef het?

Chris, ons kitaar- en klavierspeler, moes een keer in die middel van ’n vertoning badkamer toe gaan. Hy

het eenvoudig in die middel van die vertoning van die verhoog afgeklim, badkamer toe gegaan en daarna weer op die verhoog geklim.

Op Spoegwolf se eerste album, “Swaartekrag”, gaan meeste van die lirieke oor Danie se meisie, Kathryn. Sou julle haar beskou as ‘n muse vir meeste lirieke?

Ons sien vir David Kramer as ’n groot muse vir die musiek wat ons maak. Maar dit is ook belangrik dat ons skryf oor realiteit en oor dit wat in ons lewens aangaan. Ek (Danie) en Kathryn (de Villiers) het net begin uitgaan tydens die skryf van die Swaartekrag-album, so ek was baie verlief en kon nie anders as om oor haar te skryf nie.

As julle ’n show met een persoon of band kon doen, wie sou dit wees en waar sou die verhoog opgestel word?

BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN!!! Ons is almal mal oor hom. Die bekende Red Rocks Amfiteater wat in Mumford and Sons se “I Will Wait” musiekvideo gesien word lyk soos ’n baie lekker verhoog om op te perform.

Na watter musiek luister julle in die geheim?

Danie: Barbara Streisand Moskou: +44 Chris: Ek het onlangs weer ’n groot liefde vir Seal se liedjie, ‘Kiss from a Rose’ gekry.

As julle een band weer bymekaar kon kry, wie sou dit wees?

Hoe blink lyk die toekoms vir Spoegwolf en wat behels die planne vir die res van die jaar?

Ons het baie shows wat nou opkom en ons sal moontlik begin werk aan ʼn nuwe album.

Verder wil ons regtig net so veel as moontlik vuur maak en saam braai!

Ek (Danie) glo dat enige iets blink kan word solank mens dit aanhou vryf. Ek glo die band se toekoms werk dieselfde.

The Young Folks are upping the level with a Tiny Palette of Colour ARLEEN STONE

The Young Folks trio consist out of two brothers, Charel, Christo and their third member, Mark. They have been entertaining the Stellenboschers gig after gig and with their new EP out, the fun will only increase.

The guys had their first music experience at a young age. Charel started his music career when he received his first guitar in grade three.

Chris taught himself how to play

drums, after he bought himself a second hand drum kit from money he won in a competition.

Mark also groomed his love for music since primary school and was inspired after he attended a concert of the band Offspring.

These three fellows had a lot of input from Charel and Christo’s older brother, Herman and therefore they decided that a career in music is what they wanted to pursue.

Charel is the main writer in the

group, but the lyrics usually follow a story that is turned into music.

The love and romance theme also seem to inspire many of their lyrics.

New songs are in the pipeline for this band and they hope to have some released by the end of the year.

When asked if there is any interesting things they want to do in the future, laughs and looks were exchanged. Charel says that he really wants to go bungy jumping, Mark wants to sleep more and Christo had a

laugh at the fact that he couldn’t think of anything.

Last month the band released their first EP, titled A Tiny Palette of Colour.

They had a great first performance with it at the Free State Arts Festival.

After this tour, they kicked-off their Garden Tour in the Western-Cape.

“This has been one of the top five weekends of my student life so far,” says Charel. Christo also stated, “We received great feedback from the crowd and all the venue owners.”

Later in the year the band will hold a small and intimate garden concert, upping the level and making the gig very personal by hosting it in the Kleinhanses’ backyard.

The next major step for the band will be when they go on their Joburg tour.

Larger crowds will then be a new territory for the members, but with their unique sound, warm personalities and the help of their tour members the tour will definitely be a success.

uid-Afrika het hom leer ken as die hoofsanger van Fokofpolisiekar en Van Coke Kartel.

Die man met die growwe stem wat skree en sonder moeite die skare oorneem.

As gevolg van omstandighede moes hy egter besluit om solo te gaan.

Sy sololoopbaan is tot dusvêr alles behalwe ’n teleurstelling.

Met talle rekords wat gebreek is kort ná die bekendstelling van Toe Vind Ek Jou, het Francois van Coke bewys dat hy ná byna 21 jaar in die musiekbedryf nog lank nie reg is om tou op te gooi nie.

Hy meen dat sy rol in onder meer

Fokofpolisiekar sowel as Van Coke Kartel ’n groot invloed het op die sukses van sy sololoopbaan vandag, maar dat die pad egter nie altyd so maklik was nie.

Hy beskryf Fokofpolisiekar as ’n soort Voëlvry-beweging vir die jonger generasie wat nie soseer gefokus is op ’n politieke geveg nie, maar eerder een van sosiale aard.

Wat sy sololoopbaan betref is dit egter nie die geval nie.

Met sy selfgetitelde album kom Francois meer kwesbaar voor.

“Ek wil musiek maak wat eg is,” sê hy. Musiek wat relevant is tot my lewe. Musiek met eerlike lirieke.”

Juis daarom is Toe Vind Ek Jou tans so ’n groot sukses.

Nadat Karen Zoid vir Francois

gekontak het om hom te eer vir die kwesbaarheid van Tot Die Son Uitkom, ’n liedjie wat in 2011 deur Van Coke Kartel vrygestel is, het dié twee talentvolle musikante besluit om saam te werk.

Ná ’n tydperk van persoonlike worstelinge het Francois besluit om tog te skryf oor iets wat nie baie algemeen in sy lirieke te vinde is nie: Liefde. En só is Toe Vind Ek Jou uiteindelik gebore.

Oor die afgelope twee jaar het Francois se lewe drasties verander.

Hy en sy vrou van die afgelope vier jaar, Lauren Badenhorst, verwag binnekort hul eersteling en hy meen dat hy nog nooit so gereed was vir iets in sy lewe nie.

JOU EEN STEM KAN ’N KOOR VIR VERANDERING WORD Die afgelope munisipale verkiesing het weer gewys hoe belangrik die gewone mens op straat se stem is.

Met net ’n paar stemme wat die ANC en die DA in sommige munisipaliteite geskei het, was dit duidelik dat Suid-Afrikaners hulle daad (of kruisies) by die woord gevoeg het.

Dit is immers wat dit beteken om in ’n demokratiese land te bly.

Om jou stem te laat hoor en as die koor hard genoeg praat, verandering teweeg te bring.

Dis ook weer daardie tyd op kampus.

Glimlaggende gesiggies pryk orals, mooi beloftes word opgedis en ooroptimistiese oplossings vir kampuskwessies word aan studente afgesmeer.

Vanjaar se verkiesing maak wel ’n paar interessante draaie en die uiteinde hiervan kan óf katastrofies óf ’n nodige vars briesie van verandering wees.

Hoe lank ons gaan wag vir hierdie uiteinde sal die tyd nog leer, maar hopelik is dit nie meer te lank

nie, want die arme huidige SR het al met hulle aanstelling moeg vir die job gelyk.

Wanneer hulle wel uiteindelik van hulle lot verlos is, het jy die kans om seker te maak dat hulle opvolgers mense is wat na jou belange as student gaan omsien.

Die Matie se spotprent is vandag wel tong-in-die-kies kommentaar op hoe die stand van sake die afgelope paar jare was.

En met die huidige SR-sirkus is dit te verstane dat dit meer pret is om in die koukus te gaan sit met

jou Pulp-popcorn, die kandidate se voorkoms om ’n tafel in die Neelsie te bespreek en dan verder te stres oor more se toets.

Tot misdaad op kampus, die verkragtingskultuur, Jan Marais, hemelhoë studiegelde, studenteverblyf, die taalbeleid, koshuiskultuur, parkering op kampus, fietsdiefstal, die feit dat Bohemia jou 1:30 in plaas van 2:00 uitskop en ander kwessies weer ter sprake kom - en daar na die SR gedraai word vir antwoorde.

Jy het die mag om te kies wie jou deur die doolhof genaamd die “Stellenbosse-studentelewe” te navigeer.

Ons is geneig om te hamer op ons demokratiese reg om te betoog en ons reg op vryheid van spraak.

Ons vergeet van ander demokratiese regte wat moontlik hierdie betogings kan voorkom.

Probeer vanjaar onthou.

GORRELKOP SÊRRIFICALLY DISAPPOINTED The third term on campus has always been my favourite time of the year for two reasons: “silly season”, where going to Bohemia on a Monday was more likely than going to any of my classes, and of course kleinsêr.

The latter, however, has been mediocre at best.

Let’s start off with the ticket prices, R40 to watch one uitdunne show. If you are going to charge that much I’d like to get my money’s worth - spoiler alert - I did not. No one did.

Like can we actually get our money back though?

The gees on campus surrounding sêr was basically dead this year. There was no hype nor excitement, although there was not much to get excited about I guess.

Heemstede and Huis Francie, two groups who consistently placed in the top four in previous years, did not participate, leaving massive shoes that were left unfilled.

Controversy also surrounded other groups who had members from other residences. People were understandably upset and complained to KuKo, but not much could be done.

The quality of most sêr performances, at Trip as well as the actual shows, was shocking.

I enjoy watching a hot mess as much as the next person, but it gets a bit old when it’s the only thing you see.

I can honestly only name a couple of female and male groups that were thoroughly entertaining and on par with what I have grown to expect from a semi-decent sêr . The rest of the time I was mostly grinding my teeth, hoping time would go by fast enough so I could tend to my bleeding ears.

It’s quite baffling how people don’t give much thought to how their song choices could be quite inappropriate. I am by no means one of the most

“woke” people on campus. My lexicon doesn’t include “womxn” or any of those other confusing phrases, but I have enough sense to know certain songs should be avoided as they are offensive.

It is rather tone deaf (no pun intended) to sing Blurred Lines, a song blatantly trivializing sexual consent and promotes date rape.

This is especially offensive considering what’s been happening on campuses across the country this year and in 2015. Not to mention someone also did the song already not too long ago.

On that note, please do some homework and come up with more original song choices not done by recent groups. Some of us can actually remember what songs previous years’ groups did, some of whom actually won nationals.

Speaking of Hippokrates, please rethink some of your skits (something they introduced here) about their absence from this year’s competition, considering the main driving force behind their success tragically passed away at the start of the year.

I really hope 2017 will deliver something worth paying that amount of money for.

SRC ELECTIONS: THIS WON’T END WELL While we await the suspended Afriforum SRc candidates to take their case to the Cape high court, all we can do is wait for an eventual disaster to unfold.

Whichever way this plays out, the SRc of 2017 will leave much to be desired.

There are two very polarizing groups within the candidature, the Afriforum clan and the rest of the candidates who have all identified themselves to be a lot more progressive.

At the end of the day, if the suspensions are somehow overturned, there will be both Afriforum

and some of the other candidates on the SRc and they will all be required to work together. How this will work is yet to be seen (the 2015 group of SRc members were bad enough at coming to certain agreements during meetings).

As it stands, it would be easier for the ANC and EFF to form a coalition than for these people to agree on something.

In total there are only about 15 candidates standing for election (I’m not quite sure about the exact number, merely for the fact that some of the Afriforum candidates have just not bothered to pitch up to any of the caucuses, which goes against the stipulated rules as far as I know).

If the eight Afriforum candidates get suspended from the election, we will be left with a very awkward situation of essentially having a seven member SRc who were not voted for.

In previous years it was not uncommon for as many as 24 candidates to stand for election. Now we are not so lucky. We have to work with what we have and choose between the lime green power rangers and the remaining misfits on the other side of the spectrum.

Experience seems to be at least one thing the two groups of candidates have in common, or at least a lack thereof. None of the Afriforum candidates, apart from one, are really known for their work on campus, and from what I know it was mostly just his involvement with Afriforum, surprise.

The other seven candidates have a bit more under their belt when it comes to serving on HK and other societies, but compared to the calibre of previous candidates they fall short, badly.

One of the seven candidates is a first year and wants to stand for chair.

Now I’m all for dreaming big and what not, but that is just a bit of a stretch.

Behalwe drome om nog baie rolle in die toekoms los te slaan, bly dit een van Marguerite se grootste wense om uit te vind wat werklik by Wilgenhof aangaan.

Curiosity sparked about cryptic posters in the Neelsie

Are you ready, 15 August?

Banners with the words ‘Are you ready 15 August’ have been put up in the Neelsie Student Centre, sparking curiosity as to what’s happening on campus.

MFM 92.6 Breakfast Show co-hosts, JM Henning and Cato Louw, have been on a mission to figure out this “mystery”. After doing some intense investigating of their own, Henning and Louw’s evidence led them to believe it has something to do with Maties Sport.

In a last stitch attempt to catch the culprit responsible for the banners, Henning hit his head. This injury has lead him to believe he is en route to this year’s Rio Olympics.

Maties Sport is playing along with the idea of Henning going to Rio, enlisting the help of Athletics Sport Manager Mohammed Ally. Henning is under the impression that he will take part in the 100m sprint, hurdles, javelin and high jump events. He also thinks he will be taking part in the rowing and rugby teams in Rio. Die Matie is invited to watch Henning practice on the Coetzenberg sports ground in an attempt to get further information regarding the “mystery”.

uit 44 lede. Bekende atlete wat ook aan Maties se Parasport Klub behoort is Ilse Hayes, wat al vyf medaljes in drie verskillende Paralimpiese spele gewen het, en Anru Fourie en Fanie van der Merwe wat albei al in 2008 in Beijing en in 2012 in Londen die Suid-Afrikaanse span verteenwoordig het.

Naelbytwedstryde, opskuddings en ook ’n paar oortuigende oorwinnings.

Dit is die formaliteit van vanjaar se koshuisrugbyliga wat hierdie jaar se kompetisie bietjie meer opwindend maak as vorige jare s’n.

Die meeste mense sal saamstem dat die hoogtepunt van 29 Julie se wedstryde die een tussen Dagbreek en Helshoogte was. Helshoogte het vir die grootste deel van die wedstryd voorgeloop en gelyk of hulle in beheer is. Dagbreek het egter al vantevore sulke groot wedstryde gespeel en hulle het gewys hulle weet hoe om dié kragmetings te wen toe hulle in die laaste minuut oorgeduik het vir ’n wendrie.

Die telling van 17-3 waarmee PSO Barbarians oor Helderberg geseëvier het, was ietwat verrassend, veral omdat Helderberg tot dusver ’n goeie seisoen gehad het.

Die grootste opskudding was waarskynlik Wilgenhof se oorwinning van 12-10 oor Eendrag.

Wilgenhof is ’n onderskatte span en het met dié oorwinning beklemtoon dat hulle nie durf afgeskryf word nie. Verder het Huis Marais, Huis Visser en Elsenburg almal oortuigende oorwinnings oor onderskeidelik Simonsberg, Majuba en Medies

behaal.

Vrydag se wedstryd het gesorg vir die groot koshuisrugby-derby tussen Eendrag en Helshoogte.

Helshoogte beleef tans ’n wonderlike seisoen en was beslis gunstelinge om dié een vir die eerste keer in vyf jaar te beklink. Hulle het, veral danksy ’n uitstekende eerste helfte, aan die verwagtinge voldoen en die wedstryd 15-10 gewen.

Dit was egter nie die enigste naelskraap-stryd van die week nie. Dagbreek en Elsenburg het met 10-10 gelykop gespeel, Majuba het Simonsberg met 12-6 geklop en Huis Marais het hulle stryd teen Wilgenhof net-net met 12-11 beklink. Helderberg is terug op die wenpad nadat hulle vir Huis Visser met 26-12 geklop het en die PSO Barbarians het voortgebou op hulle goeie vertonings tot dusver toe hulle hul wedstryd teen Medies met 24-15 gewen het.

Hierdie twee rondtes het vir ’n gaping tussen die top vier spanne en die res gesorg.

Helshoogte is weer bo (34) met PSO Barbarians (33), Dagbreek (32) en Huis Marais (29) kort op hul hakke. Helderberg staan tans op 26 punte en kan dus nie van vergeet word nie. Die bogenoemde vyf spanne gaan in die komende weke sake uitspook vir die eerste posisie en die stryd beloof om nie teleur te stel nie.

MATIE PROTEAS Jo Prins, Stephanie Brandt, Sasha-Lee Petersen en Charmaine Baard het verlede week vir die Suid-Afrikaaanse o.21-netbalspan in Botswana deelgeneem in ’n kwalifiserende stryd vir volgende jaar se o.21-Wêreldbekertoernooi, wat ook in Botswana gehou sal word.

Brandt, Prins, Petersen en Baard is al kernspelers in die Maties se span en het tot dusver ’n baie suksesvolle jaar. Hulle verskuif nou hulle aandag na die Varsity Netbal-kompetisie wat op 5 September afskop. Maties het verlede jaar net-net in die eindstryd teen die NWU-Puk verloor.

Rugby player starts foundation aimed at giving hope to those less fortunate

Be The Difference: Opening doors with sport

M

ost people know Craig Barry as the explosive backline player for the Maties rugby team. What people don’t know, is that he is the vice chairman of Be The Difference, a foundation that serves the needs of less fortunate people.

Be The Difference targets individuals with dreams and ambitions but who, due to financial constraints, aren’t able to fulfil them.

The foundation is run by the motto “to serve and give hope” and offers disadvantaged people the opportunity to live a better life, promoting positive self-image and encouraging individuals to reach for their dreams, something we take for granted.

“It’s all about making a difference for young people and inspiring them to never give up on their dreams.

“Our main target is the youth, we want to make a difference in children’s lives and give them something to strive towards,” said Barry.

The foundation’s sights are largely set on the Kraaifontein community but also stretch as far as communities in Port Elizabeth.

“Be The Difference changed my life. When I first got involved with the foundation it made me realise that as fortunate individuals we have so many opportunities, such as basic privileges like a roof over our head, which is something I have always taken for granted,” said Barry.

According to Barry, the foundation has made him more thankful for what he has in life, inspiring him to be further involved in the community.

“As members of the foundation we strive to be a difference in the lives of other people where ever we go.

“Whether it is Stellenbosch or Kraaifontein, or any rural area we go to in South Africa, we strive to be the difference there.”

Barry’s personal goal for the foundation is for it to be a fulltime organization that is involved with all aspects of life.

“Having institutes for people to go to with everyday needs is something we want to achieve.

“Whether it is for counselling, psychological issues, young children that can’t afford to go to school or even rape victims, we want to make a difference for those people.”

Be The Difference is based on Christian pillars and Barry believes this is a key ingredient in having faith.

“By the hand of God we try to open doors for these people and really make them believe that change can happen for them.”

Rugby has always been a major part of the Barry household with his brother being a professional referee under the Western Province Union “Rugby laid a big foundation for me to be part of something like Be The Difference.

“I am now capable of looking at rugby as more than just the game, I am able to get the Maties rugby union involved with programs for rural areas, so that we can make our club and the game available to the community.

“With that we can make the brand of Maties Rugby much bigger than it already is,” said Barry.

Maties has provided Barry with a platform to both study and play rugby, which has taught him a lot about responsibility.

“The foundation plans to grow in the next few years by becoming more involved with an additional number of communities.

“I think foundation members are important actors for the foundation. If all the members are on the same level it will really help us as an organization to move forward.

young female children with important things in their lives.

On 9 August, the women section of the foundation presented 205 matric girls with fancy dresses, shoes and accessories so that they can attend their respective matric dances later this year and feel special for the night.

From Juvenile centres to community halls, the impact that Be The Difference has made in the lives of the less fortunate is moving.

The Stormers is helping organise rugby tournaments for the foundation, with a camp scheduled for December.

The initiative is for the boys to understand the importance of being a man and a leader.
