Bib vier navorsingsweek Die Universiteit Stellenbosch (US) se Biblioteek- en Inligtingsdiens bied aan jong navorsers die geleentheid om hulle navorsingsvaardighede op te skerp by vanjaar se Biblioteeknavorsingsweek.

Dit is die sesde keer dat die Biblioteeknavorsingsweek aangebied word en vind vanjaar tussen 30 Julie en 3 Augustus plaas. Die week het Maandag afgeskop met ’n geleentheid waar prof. Jonathan Jansen, verbonde aan die fakulteit opvoedkunde, as gasspreker opgetree het.

Hy het gepraat oor die onderwerp “navorsing as ’n intellektuele aktiwiteit”.

Daarna het ’n paneelgesprek gevolg wat oor hoogteen laagtepunte van navorsing by die US oor die afgelope 100 jaar gehandel het. Die paneel het uit akademici van die universiteit se verskillende departemente bestaan.

Belangstellendes kan deur die week soortgelyke praatjies en werksessies bywoon om praktiese kennis oor onderwerpe soos die skryf van ’n

navorsingsvoorstel, kopieregkwessies en die bestuur van navorsingsdata te verwerf.

Volgens Naomi Visser, koördineerder van die Biblioteeknavorsingsweek, is die doel van die week om nagraadse studente in te lig oor korrekte navorsingsprosedures.

“Met die week wil ons graag studente help om hulle navorsing makliker te maak deur hulle te wys hoe om inligting te soek en hulle in te lig oor die dienste wat die biblioteek hulle kan bied. Ons wil hulle ook blootstel aan die verskeidenheid hulpbronne wat aan hulle beskikbaar is,” het Visser gesê.

Wat navorsing betref, weet Jana Stanvliet, ’n HonsBCom (Bestuursrekeningkunde)-student, nie altyd hoe om te werk te gaan nie en glo hierdie week kan help. “Hierdie week kan ons help met die vaardighede wat ons benodig om ons tesisse te skryf,” het sy gesê.

UCT Dean passes away The University of Cape Town (UCT) has announced that the dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Professor Bongani Mayosi, passed away on Friday, 27 July 2018.

The renowned South African cardiologist was the head of the Department of Medicine at Groote Schuur Hospital from 2006 before becoming dean of UCT’s Faculty of Health Sciences in September 2016.

Mayosi’s work focused on particularly prevalent heart diseases in developing countries.

He led a ground-breaking series of multinational research studies into the management of tuberculosis pericarditis and cardiomyopathy.

Furthermore, he led an African trial on the use of steroids in treating tuberculosis (TB) pericarditis.

Mayosi more recently headed the first large-scale multinational study of rheumatic heart disease in the world (first phase).

In 2009, he was awarded the country’s highest honour, the Order of Mapungubwe.

Stellenbosch University’s (SU) Vice-Chancellor, Professor Wim de Villiers, has extended his condolences to family and friends of Professor Mayosi: “This is a devastating loss on various levels. Bongani was a personal friend and we had worked closely together as colleagues. I had the greatest respect for him as a top cardiologist and leading scientist. And he was an important figure in higher education. Our thoughts are with his family and the UCT community.”

The cause of death is not yet known.

UCT Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng, declared in a statement that “[t]he family will liaise with the University for further communication at the appropriate time.”

MFM AGAINST PLASTIC MFM is celebrating “Plastic-free July”

by creating plastic bricks for Waste-Ed on the rooiplein. According to Emma Cloete, this is a responsible way of preventing plastics filling our landfills. “We understand that it is not always easy to avoid plastic packaging, but now we have shown a way to make use of this packaging,” said Cloete.

esidences that want to sell alcohol at events or at their bars will not be able to as a result of Stellenbosch University (SU) not having paid for the application of liquor licences on time this year.

According to Martin Viljoen, SU spokesperson, the deadline for payments was not met in time due to the early deadline for payments via SU’s financial system, which closes in December.

“An extension was requested at the Liquor Authority, who only let SU know in early April that there would be an extension until 19 April.

Unfortunately, there was not enough time remaining for the payment to go through the University’s financial system.

“Therefore, the payment only reflected in the Liquor Authority’s account after 19 April, which was after the deadline,” Viljoen said.

As a result of this, residences will not be allowed to sell alcohol legally, or they will have to apply for an emergency liquor licence, which will cost more money.

“The University has to apply from the beginning for liqour licences now.

It will, however, mean that residences will not have liquor licences for a period of time and that alcohol will not be sold in residence clubs.

According to JP de Koker, a house committee (HK) member of Dagbreek, it will cost more than R5 000 for residences to apply for emergency or temporary licences. Simonsberg was the only residence whose payment was made on time.

According to Viljoen, the notice of extension permitted that all the liquor licences get paid on 19 April, except Simonsberg, who got an extension until 24 April.

“The money showed in the Liquor Authority’s account before that date, therefore Simonsberg’s liquor licence will not be affected,” said Viljoen.

De Koker said that the payments were made by the Centre for Student Communities (SSG).

“I don’t know why they had to make the payment,” he said.

Viljoen did not answer Die Matie’s question when asked why the SSG had to make the payment and not directly through the financial division of the University.

Première-teaterfees help dramastudente ELODI TROSKIE

Na afloop van die Première-teaterfees wat die afgelope week in Stellenbosch plaasgevind het, het die produksie Kansel, onder regie van Carla Smith, met die wenprys van R20 000 weggestap.

Die fees is deur die Universiteit Stellenbosch (US) se dramadepartement aangebied met ondersteuning van die ATKV en die Nasionale Afrikaanse Teaterinisiatief (NATi).

Volgens André Gerber, een van die fees se organiseerders, was die doel van die fees om ’n platform vir dramastudente te bied om kreatiewe verhoogwerk te genereer.

“Wanneer jong teatermakers die industrie betree, word daar van hulle verwag om van meet af nuwe toneelstukke te skep.

“Dit is ’n enorme verwagting om op ’n 20-iets se skouers te plaas; veral as hulle dit nog nooit gedoen het nie,” het Gerber gesê.

Sowat 60 studente was by die fees betrokke in onderskeie hoedanighede as skrywers, regisseurs, akteurs, ontwerpers en verhoogbestuurders.

Uit die 22 konsepte wat in Maart vanjaar aan ’n paneel beoordelaars voorgelê is, is 12 produksies gekies om by die fees aangebied te word.

Die paneel het uit Diane de Beer, teaterblogger en -joernalis, Cornelia Faasen, hoof van NATi, Saartjie Botha, hoof van die US Woordfees en Petrus du Preez, voorsitter van die US dramadepartement bestaan.

Van 24-27 Julie is drie produksies elke aand by die H.B. Thom-teater opgevoer. Ilge-Mari Schutte het vir die finale tegniese versorging van alle produksies gesorg.

Die top drie produksies, Kansel, Deurmekaar en This Again?, is op Saterdag, 28 Julie weer opgevoer, waarna verskeie pryse, geborg deur

Smith vertel dat haar gunstelingdeel van die proses was om saans uit die dramadepartement te stap met die wete dat dit ’n goeie repetisie was.

Volgens De Necker was die mees waardevolle deel van die fees om te hoor wat kundiges in die industrie van hul werk dink.

“Dit was ’n voorreg om na die beoordeelaars se kommentaar en kritiek te luister, met die wete dat hul mikpunt is om die stuk beter te maak,” het sy gesê.

This Again? is deur Devonecia Swartz en Tina le Fleur geskryf.

Volgens die regisseur, Alistair Seymour, het die ervaring hulle geleer hoe uitdagend teatermaak kan wees, maar ook hoe lonend die proses is.

Seymour sê dat hy die produksie se teks en verhoogbestuur graag verder vir toekomstige optredes wil verfyn.

Deurmekaar, geskryf en regisseur deur Carla Smith, is ’n versameling van sketse wat oor die kompleksiteite van vrouwees handel.

Smith, wat self op die verhoog was in hierdie produksie, sê dat hul verhoogbestuurder, Melissa Myburgh, later as hulp-regisseur ingetree het.

Volgens Gerber gaan die fees ’n jaarlikse instelling by die dramadepartement word en die datums is reeds vir Julie 2019 vasgestel.

Regstreekse uitsendings wat gedurende die week uitgesaai is, is op YouTube onder “US Drama Departement” beskikbaar vir diegene wat nie die fees kon bywoon nie.

Choir shines in Wales

T

he Stellenbosch University (SU) Choir completed a stellar hattrick of sorts at the highly regarded Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod when they took the top spot in all three categories that they participated in.

The esteemed group of singers from SU comfortably sang their way to victories in the Youth Choirs, Mixed Choirs and Open Choirs categories, all the while captivating audiences with theirrepertoire.

The choir scored 95.5% in the Youth Choir category, 90.3% in the Mixed Choirs category and topped the Open Choirs category with a score of 95%.

The choir’s conductor, André van der Merwe, was awarded the Jayne Davies Prize for Best Conductor at the Eisteddfod.

Van der Merwe said that he is incredibly proud of the choir and the management team’s teamwork and achievements in Wales.

“The true spirit of music making reigned supreme,” said Van der Merwe.

“The reaction of the crowds to our music was truly moving. I feel that we as a choir greatly increased our artistic depth because we were able to share the soul of South Africa on an international stage.

The choir added to their impressive list of feats when they performed alongside a mere three other choirs at the International Celebration Concert, the official opening to the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod.

The concert took place in front of an audience of 2 000 people and was broadcasted on British Television.

The choir narrowly missed out on being crowned Choir of the World, with the prestigious title being handed to the National University Singapore Choir.

Kurt Marais, chairperson of the SU choir said that the experience in Wales was indescribable.

“Every moment felt very surreal to

us and we were amazed at how music was able to take us there.”

Marais said that international competitions like the Llangollen International Eisteddfod provided a platform for countries all over the world to share.

“We do not take this responsibility lightly. We always want to put our best foot forward and show that we have a voice.”

Each year, the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod attracts about 50 000 visitors and 4 000 participants, including 150 choirs, from across the world.

This year’s competition took place from 5 to 8 July and marked the SU Choir’s debut in the world-renowned celebration of the music, dance and culture from nations all around the world.

The Stellenbosch University (SU) council has approved a new strategic framework to replace the expiring Institutional Intent and Strategy 20132018.

This framework, which was launched at a staff assembly on 24 July 2018, “encapsulates the University’s vision of making SU Africa’s leading research-intensive university,” according to Prof Hester Klopper, Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Strategy and Internationalisation.

The drafting of this document, which has been in process for more than two years, was led by Klopper.

This portfolio was recently created because “it enables the University to create a stable platform on which to build our activities, whilst becoming more agile, adaptable and responsive to changing environments – locally, regionally, as well as worldwide,” said Klopper.

According to Klopper, what makes the new document unique is that the themes add new dimensions to SU’s core functions.

“For teaching and learning, the emphasis is placed on networked and collaborative teaching and learning.

For research, the focus is on research for impact. And for social impact, the emphasis is on an all-encompassing impact by means of purposeful partnerships and inclusive networks,” Klopped said.

The council advocates this framework as an appropriate response to the ever-changing landscape of higher education in South Africa.

With SU entering its second century,

this framework aims to distinguish Stellenbosch from other African universities.

In a video clip published on the website, SU Rector and ViceChancellor Prof Wim de Villiers promotes the new vision as being “a framework for the future”.

De Villiers is optimistic that the vision will aid SU in reaching its goal to be Africa’s leading researchintensive university.

This document will be implemented from 2019–2024, and included in its core values is the concept of a transforming student experience, as well as collaborative teaching and learning.

Moreover, the standards of research for impact, targeted partnerships and inclusive networks further aim to ensure that SU continues to be a thriving, renowned organisation overall.

This framework is primarily targeted at acknowledging that universities do not remain static, and the overall vision of this framework will ensure that the strategy is both comprehensive, as well as flexible.

“The benefit of a strategic framework is that it is a map to the future and it provides the basis for engagement in the qualitative and quantitative operationalisation thereof over the next year,” explained Klopper.

Klopper said it is bold in the sense that SU positions itself to be the leading research-intensive institution in Africa.

“We are commemorating 100 years in 2018, and guiding a process for the way forward remains an honour and privilege,” Klopper said.

Law Clinic has been shortlisted for a respectable award at the 2018 African Legal Awards. This shortlisting makes SU Law Clinic the first university Law Clinic in Africa to be a finalist for the Specialist Law Firm of the Year award.

When being shortlisted for an award like this, it is perceptible that other leading and top law firms like Webber Wentzel will also be competing in the award ceremony in various categories.

“Although we are a small team, our achievements and impact is comparable to that of other top-rated law firms who generally have much more resources at their disposal than we do,” said Dr Theo Broodryk, the head of the SU Law Clinic.

It also speaks to the quality of legal assistance and advice that the Law Clinic provides to the poor and marginalised, and the excellent educational initiatives which the Law Clinic drives,” Broodryk said.

The Law Clinic has been involved with a number of matters which substantiate impact such as a potentially precedent-setting alleged discriminatory case involving SU student Hendri Herbst as well as tampon tax proposals.

he SRC , Equality Unit and Transformation Office has called upon students to join in on The Total Shutdown Protest today.

The Intersectional Women’s March Against Gender Based Violence will take place in Cape Town where they will march from Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) to Parliament.

According to Lwando Nkamisa, SRC Chairperson, the SRC will provide four minibus taxi’s for transport to the Mother City. The Equality Unit and Transformation Office will also provide transport in solidarity with the cause. Nkamisa expressed his frustration with Stellenbosch University being the last institution to release a statement regarding supporting the nation wide movement.

“This march is about signifying the issues facing our country as far as gender based violence is concerned,” he said. Nkamisa stated that Stellenbosch still struggles with the dillusion that SU does not have the

Lastly, a mission statement of not more than 50 words should be included in the nomination.

Met die nood wat rondom Stellenbosch groot is, het die Universiteit Stellenbosch se departement sielkunde die behoefte aan beradingsdienste vir die gemeenskap van die Dwarsriviervallei raakgesien. Die Dwarsrivierhuisie-projek is daarom geloods om gratis sielkundige behandeling aan lede van dié gemeenskap te bied.

Die projek, wat al ’n jaar aan die gang is, word deur twaalf sielkundehonneursstudente in samewerking met twee ervare kliniese sielkundiges bestuur.

Aanvanklik is die dienste in die Kylemore-kliniek se wagkamer gedryf, maar het intussen uitgebrei en word nou in ’n beradingskamer naby Pniel Primêre Skool aangebied.

“Beradingsdienste is van uiterste belang in minderbevoorregte gebiede, omdat daar daagliks gesukkel word met talle kwessies wat depressie kan veroorsaak. Met berading wat tussen R800 en R1000 kan wissel, is geestesgesondheidsbehandeling vir meeste lede van die gemeenskap onbekostigbaar en daarom het ons besluit om die Dwarsrivierhuisieprojek te loods,” het Ashley Lourens, die koördineerder van die projek, gesê.

“Terwyl die kinders die speletjies geniet het, het hulle terselfdertyd ook baie oor menseverhoudings geleer sonder dat hulle dit agterkom,” het hy bygevoeg.

“Ons hoop dat die projek op ’n punt sal kom waar lede van die gemeenskap so veel as moontlik gebruik maak van die beradingsfasiliteit,” het Shannon Thomson, ook ’n honneursstudent deel van die beradingspan, gesê.

Die langste maansverduistering van die 21ste eeu, wat boonop ’n bloedmaan was, het ’n paar Maties op hol gehad, maar dit het veral een groep op hulle fietse gehad. Deelnemers van die MoonlightMass Stellies het verlede Saterdagaand bymekaar gekom om op die maanverligte aand saam deur Stellenbosch se strate te ry.

MoonlightMass behels ’n groep mense wat op die aand van ’n volmaan byeen kom en as ’n amperse konvooi deur die strate ry. ’n Soortgelyke saamtrek word met elke volmaan in Kaapstad gehou en hierdie inisiatief is oorgeneem en aangepas vir Stellenbosch deur EcoMaties in samewerking met Stellenbosch Fietsry en Uncle Fvz. Vir die geleentheid bring deelnemers hulle eie nie-gemotoriseerde vervoer, dit wil sê enige iets van ’n fiets tot ’n skaatsplank. Die rit begin en eindig op die Rooiplein en duur ongeveer ’n uur om te voltooi.

Volgens Evan Williams, verbonde aan Stellenbosch Fietsry en koördineerder van die gebeurtenis, is die doel van die geleentheid om bewustheid te skep oor niegemotoriseerde vervoer en die belangrikheid daarvan om die aarde se koolstofvoetspoor te verminder. Dit is ook ’n goeie geleentheid vir lede van die gemeenskap om mekaar beter te leer ken en nuwe vriendskappe te vorm.

Volgens Williams word die veiligheid van die rit verseker deurdat al die deelnemers in ’n groep beweeg.

“Alhoewel ons nie veiligheidsbeamptes het wat die deelnemers vergesel nie, was daar nog nooit enige beserings nie en ons kry dit reg deur as ’n eenheid saam te ry. Ons poog om basies almal as een voertuig te beweeg,” het Williams gesê.

“Dit is die eerste keer wat ek in die maanlig skaatsplank gery het en dis ’n lekker manier om my bydrae tot ’n laer koolstofvoetspoor van die aarde te maak,” het Joshua Christie, ’n tweedejaarstudent en deelnemer, gesê.

“Ek wou darem nie binne sit tydens die bloedmaan nie,” was ’n ander student, Thomas Theron se motivering.

I am always the girl who helps everyone else get ready and feel special. Don’t start planning too early, because that would simply drain your energy. If you invite a guy who you do not know very well, do something together at least once before the dance.

I honestly feel, however, that it is not absolutely necessary for a date. People mostly take dates as a result of peer pressure, and you really do not need that kind of pressure on such a special night.

Silly season is the time of year when the use of phrases such as “Golden week,” “Suicide Sunday,” and “Klein Saterdag” reach its peak.

After passing the first semester, many feel that they owe it to themselves to let off some steam and enjoy a few stress-free nights out, which explains why all the clubs were so packed during the first week back.

This can be a distressing experience for some, with the possibility of losing your personal belongings, missing important tutorials and picking up a nasty flu. However, silly season could also be a wonderful time of revelry if

you just play your cards right. Here are a few tips and tricks for surviving silly season: 1. Pace yourself. It’s very important for you to know your limits during this time and to act accordingly. You don’t want to be that guy who goes all out for the first two days, but does not have enough money or stamina to carry on. No one has an endless supply of money to be able to have a golden week every week. So, budget and plan which nights will be the best to go out and which nights are better for recovery.

Have to hydrate, mate. We all saw what happened to the plants during the drought and you don’t want

that happening to you. Nothing like a glass of H2O and a sachet of Rehidrat to make the morning after more bearable.

3.

Eat your food, dude. That whole “eating is cheating” thing is nothing but a bare-faced lie. Make sure to eat something before heading out as this will sustain you through the night.

4. Stay in school, kids. The last thing you want to do during this time is to fall behind with your work.

So, stop your whining and just go to that 08.00 lecture. Believe me, failing a module is worse than falling asleep in a class of 250 people. Also, if you’ve been following all the steps up

until now, this should not really be a problem for you, now should it?

5. Exercise to energise.

Oh yes, the dreaded word for many – exercise. It might seem like a contradiction to say that this exhausting action will energise you, but it’s the truth. This doesn’t mean that you have to go and run 10 km every day, even just a short speed walk with friends will do the trick. Not only will it boost your energy levels but it also helps to fight stress and that extra winter flab.

At the end of the day it’s all about balance to ensure that you not only have a golden week, but a golden semester and a golden life.

Unbeanown: Making coffee for a cause

Coffee, modern art and the Breast Health Foundation are currently collaborating at the hands of a thirdyear Actuarial Sciences student, Jaco Moller. What started out as an above-average liking of a good cup of Joe, evolved into a project that goes beyond just entrepreneurial zing.

Every sip of the unique Unbeanown blend contributes to a cause close to its creator’s heart.

When Jaco decided at the beginning of 2018 that he is going to pursue the world of coffee, he had more than one goal. He wanted to create the perfect easy-to-drink medium roast blend, use local artists’ artwork on his packaging and promote breast cancer awareness.

Moller decided that 15% of Unbeanown’s monthly profit would be donated to the Breast Health Foundation.

“Both my grandmothers passed away fighting breast cancer, and last year my aunt was diagnosed with it as well. I grew up knowing that breast cancer runs in my family. That’s why I feel so strongly about this cause.”

Moller is also supporting local artists by featuring their artwork on the packaging and then giving them recognition on the back of the package.

“Coffee is really only one part of the Unbeanown brand,” he explained

“I want it to also become a platform for artists to showcase their work. I’m constantly on the lookout for artwork that I would like to feature. One of the featured artists was someone who I actually stumbled upon on Instagram.”

When asked about balancing his studies, his social life and his company, Moller explained that “if you really want to do something, you’ll always find the time for it.”

Although the company is still only in its early stages, Moller dreams

about becoming a competitor for the current leading coffee suppliers to restaurants in South Africa.

“I want people to walk into a restaurant or a café and instantly recognise the Unbeanown sign,” Moller said.

Moller also hopes to expand his business and his brand by pursuing creative projects other than coffee, but that stays true to the Unbeanown slogan: ‘Indulge the unkown’.

For every student looking to share their personal space, finding the ideal roommate is a make-or-break situation. No one wants to be a victim of flatmate blues.

No matter the level of your investigative skills (a.k.a social media ‘stalking’), a Facebook profile does not give you sufficient evidence to proceed with potential roommate applications.

You need a game plan. Be unapologetically strategic about it.

You need to find someone you will be able to tolerate for an extensive period of time in, presumably, a small space.

You will be sharing part of your life with this person, the realest and most intimate parts thereof, so you need to be at least 90% sure you’re ready to agree to that.

Cubaña makes debut in the square Cubaña relocates to infamous Stellenbosch square after last years shooting. Lisa de Clerq dives into Cubaña’s grand reopening on the square.

With silly season in full swing, Stellenbosch night-life enthusiasts are bound to have noticed the shiny new building of Cubaña that has opened in ‘the square’.

The Havana Lounge, which was previously located on Plein Street, reopened on the corner of Alexander and Bird Street on 6 July.

According to Craig Barthorpe, Cubaña Stellenbosch’s general manager, security at the new location is being enforced more strictly.

Cubaña’s previous location was the site of a shooting last year that claimed the lives of two people.

Barthorpe said that people will not be permitted to enter Cubaña if they are going to “cause trouble”.

Barthorpe said that Cubaña has a lot of competition in its new location and that it subsequently needs to offer something different to stand out in the square.

CUBANA Springs up on the square “We want to keep our exclusive up-market feel,” he said.

In contrast to the generally relaxed dress-code of the night-life culture, Cubaña’s official dress code is smartcasual. According to Barthorpe flipflops, gym-wear, vests and caps are

therefore not permitted in Cubaña, especially after 19.00.

“We like our clientele to dress nicely,” Barthorpe said. “It gives the club an up-market feel.”

Barthorpe explained how Cubaña’s policies work in terms of access to the

club.

“The official door policy does not permit entry to anyone under the age of 23, but if you are over the age of 18, you will be allowed through the doors.

“It is of course important that you, then, act your age”.

“It’s like our slogan says,” said Barthorpe, “‘come see…and be seen’, nobody really wants to be seen passing out in every corner of the establishment,” he said.

Cubaña also offers lounges that usually have a minimum spending rate of R2 000. According to Barthorpe, however, this minimum spending rate is being reviewed in order for the club to be able to accomodate its many customers.

“The motivation behind the minimum spending rate at the lounges concerns the protection of the expensive, luxurious couches.”

Barthorpe said that the last thing Cubaña wants to do is “turn people away”.

The annual Koeksisterfest is taking

place on Friday, 3 August, and the event will be hosted by the three sister residences, Nemesia, Serruria, and Erica.

This year’s line-up includes Majozi, Uncle Spike, The Stinging Rogers, Lee Cooper, Dean Thorne, Helga Vorster, and Rory MacGregor.

The festival has grown exponentially since its launch in 2016, when it started out as a small concert in the parking lot of the three sister residences. “We hope that this year will be bigger than ever before,” said Marbi Schwartz, Nemesia’s House Committee member responsible for the festival. “It has grown over the past two years and now we want to include the wider Stellenbosch community.”

KOEKSISTERFEST (Koek)sisters are doing it for themselves One of the significant changes to this year’s Koeksisterfest is the venue. The concert will be held at Jan Marais Park this year instead of at Wilgenhof, which is where it took place last year.

This year will also include a night market where food and drinks will be sold by local entrepreneurs. “We also decided to change the atmosphere a little this year,” says Schwartz. “We really want people of all ages in the

Stellenbosch community to enjoy the festival. Therefore, we decided to add the night market. People can enjoy the music while they eat and browse the stalls.”

It is the only concert of its size hosted by female residences on campus. “We hope to encourage other female residences to have the same type of events. We hope that they support our event and maybe even collaborate on a giant festival in the

future.”

To promote the event, the three sister residences sold koeksisters in the Neelsie throughout last week. The event is also part of and promoted by the Stellenbosch Alumni group.

“If this festival is a big success we can give back to the community,” Schwartz said. The proceeds of the festival are divided equally among the residences, who use it to fund projects within their respective residences.

“We want all residents to have the same opportunities without financial challenges standing in the way,” added Schwartz. “In Nemesia specifically, we use the money for our Helpmekaar fund which helps girls cover costs of residence and campus events.”

wee Maties verteenwoordig hierdie week vir Suid-Afrika by die Wêrelduniversiteitefietsrykampioenskap (WUC).

Jacques Lloyd, ’n BRek-student, en Max Sullivan, ’n M-student in publieke administrasie, is tans in Braga, Portugal waar hulle sedert gister met die kampioenskap besig is.

Beide Lloyd en Sullivan het reeds aan die spoedbaan deelgeneem en Vrydag durf hulle die padwedren aan.

Die kampioenskap duur tot Saterdag, 4 Augustus.

Al twee klink hoopvol. “Dit sal ongelooflik wees om die top tien of selfs beter te haal, sou die kompetisie

dit toelaat,” sê Lloyd.

Sullivan is ook opgewonde om die land se naam hoog te hou.

“Ons gaan ons beste gee, ons land en universiteit verteenwoordig en ’n goeie tyd hê,” sê hy.

Die twee fietsryers is daaraan gewoond om saam met (en teen mekaar) te kompeteer.

Albei vertel dat hulle nie net vir mekaar spanmaats is nie, maar ook vriende. Sullivan beweer verder dat hulle in terme van styl baie eenders is en dat hulle moontlik in die wedren naby aan mekaar sal bly en mekaar sal kan motiveer.

Tussen hulle studies deur, beaam albei fietsryers dat dissipline ’n groot rol tydens voorbereiding vir die seisoen gespeel het.

Lang ure se oefening en vroeë oggende kan baie uitdagend raak.

“Dit vereis baie opoffering en determinasie,” vertel Lloyd.

Tog bly hulle steeds passievol oor fietsry. Lloyd stel dit so: “Op hierdie oomblik geniet ek dit regtig om net op my fiets te ry. Of dit nou spoed teen bulte op is of om te stop by tien koffiewinkels tydens ’n rit.”

Sullivan noem egter dat hy ’n breek van fietsry gaan neem om sy studie af te handel.

Naas die Maties, maak twee Tukkies, Jacques Horn en Elmari de Wet, ook deel van die Suid-Afrikaanse span uit.

Gaan na Facebook en volg WUC Cycling 2018 om op hoogte van die kampioenskap te bly.

Rugby Die waterkrisis het veroorsaak dat koshuisrugby vanjaar uitgestel is en die seisoen eindig daarom veel later as vorige jare. Vanjaar se koshuisrugby het gisteraand afgeskop en die eindronde vind op Dinsdag, 2 Oktober plaas.

Die spanne wat in die vierde liga speel, is eerste aan die beurt en op Vrydag, 3 Augustus begin die eerste liga se wedstryde.

Al die wedstryde word by Coetzenburg gespeel, maar die sweet word tydens oefeninge by Goldfields se velde afgetap, want die Coetzenburg-velde mag net vir wedstryde gebruik word.

Hokkie Naas koshuisrugby, het die koshuishokkie se winteren somerliga ook later begin.

Die winterliga se eerste wedstryde het einde Mei afgeskop en die eindstryd sal in September gevoer word. Die somerliga sal na afloop van die winterliga afskop.

Alle hokkiewedstryde moet op ’n

astrobaan gespeel word, want daar is geen water om die gras ná die wedstryde te laat herstel nie.

“Die gras is op hierdie stadium omtrent net grond,” het Scharlize Crafford, klubassistent van Maties Hokkie, gesê. “Die opsie bestaan nie eers om daarop te speel nie.”

Sokker Die sokkerliga is nie deur die waterkrisis geraak nie en die wedstryde het soos beplan reeds in Maart afgeskop.

“Ons oefeninge is wel beïnvloed,” het Theo Potgieter, sokkerverteenwoordiger van Dagbreek, gesê.

“Meeste spanne oefen gewoonlik op die Vergenoegd-sportgronde, maar ons het ’n e-pos gedurende die vakansie ontvang wat sê dat ons nie meer van die gronde gebruik mag maak nie. Nou oefen ons maar by Coetzenburg, maar hulle jaag ons partykeer daar weg, so oefeninge is onseker.”

K.G. Zungu, koördineerder van die koshuissokkerliga, het in die bogenoemde e-pos verduidelik dat die fakulteit agriwetenskappe die fasiliteite by die Vergenoegdsportgronde oorgeneem het en daarom mag die spanne nie meer daar oefen nie.

USSA 2018 RECAP

A successful USSA for Maties Sport COURTNEY WILLIAMS

While many students break for midyear holiday, the Maties athletes jump straight into tournament mode.

The winter edition of the University Sports South Africa (USSA) competition occurred during the month of June across the country, with many student-athletes representing Stellenbosch University (SU) in their respective codes.

Thirteen codes were included in the prestigious championship, which finds a select few universities being granted the opportunity to compete.

Of these thirteen codes, Maties Sport reports that three titles and various medals were achieved at this year’s USSA Championships.

The Maties Rugby, Cycling and Badminton teams finished top of their respective standings, walking away with gold medals.

It is the second consecutive year that Maties Rugby has won the USSA tournament, thrashing Tuks 52-10 in this year’s final.

Youngster Ben-Jason Dixon was named Player of the Tournament and loose-forward Joa Swart was named Forward of the Tournament.

It was the Maties men’s cycling team’s fourth USSA title in as many years with Gert Heyns also taking overall victory. An impressive climb up the table saw the women’s team finishing in at a close second.

Invigorating performances by both hockey teams left the men’s and women’s teams with silver medals. The women’s team lost out on a first place finish to the defending champions, Tuks.

The men’s ride to the final was somewhat written in the stars, after a few bad results from the Stellenbosch outfit.

It seemed fate was on their side with the mathematics in favour of the Maties men’s side.

Their respective wins, in congruent with other results falling in their favour, advancecd them to the knockout stages.

After reaching the final, they went on to lose to neighbours UCT, carrying defeat on their shoulders but silver around their necks.

Both men and women teams flew the Maties flag high coming in at second place.

After a disappointing outing in the 2017 USSA Championship, the Maties Netball team were looking to right their wrongs in this year’s edition.

They did so in a convincing fashion, beating Pukke 54-35, walking away with the bronze medal, or as referred to by their manager as “rose gold”.

It was a noteable week for the Maties Football teams competing in section B and not only looking for medals but also promotion to section A. The women’s team won bronze after a penalty shootout in the third and fourth place playoffs and achieved

the promotion.

Scoring thirteen goals and conceding just two, it was the penalty shootout that prevented the Men’s team of advancement.

Following four consecutive wins, the Maroon Machines were knocked out of the semi-finals and third and fourth place playoffs on penalties, finishing in at fourth place.

This year’s USSA was capped off with a positive message from Maties Sport management.

Matsobane Jerry Laka, deputy director of Maties Sport, commented, “Even though our results were great, we achieved our goal which is to finish top four across the board. The emphasis on these tournaments, like the USSA competition, is not only about winning, it’s about having the students create memories and build relationships that will last.

“The mandate set out to these coaches and players is to enjoy themselves; the results will come when you’re enjoying what you are doing.”

Grant van Velden, Sport Technology and Training Innovations manager of the high performance unit of Maties Sport, commented on how technology was used to capture data and improve preparation across all the sport codes.

He said, “based on the feedback, the preparation for this winter edition of USSA has been great and I think it shows in our results.”

Skaakmat vir kamerpunte TIVAN LEAK

Die vreemde mense wat agtuur op ’n Dinsdagaand in jou koshuiseetsaal rondstaan, is waarskynlik skaakspelers van die koshuisskaakliga.

Gisteraand het die vierde ronde van die koshuisliga by Minerva plaasgevind.

Koshuise en PSO’s het spanne van vyf spelers elk, wat teen mekaar meeding om die vyf beskikbare punte vir elke ligabyeenkoms.

Elke speler in die wenspan verwerf ’n volle punt vir die span, terwyl spelers wat gelykop speel elk ’n halwe punt vir hulle span verdien.

Daar is vier afdelings waarin spanne geklassifiseer word volgens hulle prestasie in vorige jare se ligas.

Afdeling A is waar die top spanne teen mekaar kompeteer om die posisie van top skaakkoshuis, daarna volg afdelings B, C en D. Afdeling A bestaan uit agt spanne, afdelings B en C beide uit ses spanne en afdeling D uit sewe spanne.

Daar is ongeveer 130 spelers wat aan die koshuisliga deelneem in spanne vir 13 koshuise.

Die spelers se vermoë strek van beginners, wat deelneem vir kamerpunte tot spelers wat al nasionaal

en selfs internasionaal deelgeneem het. Baie van die koshuise skryf meer as een span in.

Verlede jaar was ’n naelskraap oorwinning vir Eendrag wat met ’n halwe punt, met ander woorde die waarde van ’n enkele gelykopwedstryd, bo Majuba uitgestyg het en Dagbreek kort op hulle hakke.

Die finale ligawedstryde sal waarskynlik op 21 of 28 Augustus plaasvind, maar dit is nog te vroeg in die liga om te bespiegel oor wie moontlik hierdie jaar die finale skaakmat sal inkry.

Die liga word gekoördineer deur die Maties Skaakkomitee, waarvan Eduard King die koshuisligapresident is.

Twee Maties, Michelle Fisher, hoof van die Maties Skaakkomitee, en Stefan du Toit, het beide verlede jaar gekwalifiseer om vanjaar in die USSA Studentespele in Brasilië te gaan deelneem.

Volgens King werk Maties se skaakspan hoofsaaklik op ’n belangstellingsbasis.

Verder het King gesê dat belangstellendes ’n goeie kans sal staan om Maties te kan verteenwoordig by toernooie soos die Intervarsity wat verlede jaar deur Maties aangebied en gewen is.

editorial/redaksioneel 77 YEARS AND ONLY GOING UP Die Matie has never been easy.

Since its launch in 1941, Die Matie has faced its fair share of challenges.

It is not the role of Die Matie to boost the ego of the university or any other parties. It is our role to hold the university accountable and be a voice for all students on campus.

Sometimes this can make the people we are writing about uncomfortable, however, it is very necessary. The only way people can make legitimate decisions and form opinions on situations around them, is if they are as informed as possible about what is happening.

Die Matie glady takes up the torch to continue being the informant of campus.

It is because of this that a team of more than 35 students work tirelessly to produce an edition of Die Matie every two weeks. They do this without any form of payment and sometimes have to take a lot of flack for writing about what other people do.

And yet, they push through.

Die rede hoekom Die Matie na 77 jaar steeds sterk staan, is omdat die mense wat by hierdie koerant betrokke is die belangrikheid van die werk wat hulle doen besef. Dit kom

nie sonder uitdagings nie, maar op die einde van die dag ontvang die redaksie deursettingsvermoë danksy hulle oortuiging dat joernalistiek op ’n kampus soos Stellenbosch net so belangrik is soos joernalistiek op nasionale vlak.

Hierdie koerant skroom nie om kwessies uit te lig wat ander ongemaklik of die josie in maak nie.

At the same time, Die Matie also strives to inform students about things that will warm their hearts, make them feel compassion, and inspire them to make a difference in the world.

It all comes down to this: Die

Matie wants to make campus a better place by delivering a contribution we know we can do well.

One of the things that makes Die Matie what it is, is the fact that the students on campus form such a big part of it. The university has no say in what gets published and how it is written. This ensures that the voices of students are the priority when it comes to choosing stories to place on this platform.

verbeter en hoe ons te werk kan gaan om waarlik jóú stem op kampus te wees.

Hierdie koerant se hoofdoel is om te dien. Ons doen dit deur stemme gehoor te maak, mense verantwoordbaar te hou, vermaak te verskaf, ’n sentrum vir die deel van idees te wees en so nou en dan ’n tong in die kies grappie te maak.

Without a doubt, any university that values the fourth pillar of democracy cannot do without an independant student newspaper, and Die Matie fulfills that role with pride.

DIE MATIE CARTOONS THROUGH TIME Die Matie has had a lot of cartoon artists throughout the years, but one thing has stayed the same - a cartoon can encapsulate exactly what students on campus are thinking (and sometimes not saying out loud). Take a look at what cartoonists felt like drawing since 1998.

Janine Pienaar, SRC-candidate for student affairs and SOSIUS said at a circus at Monica that there should be less plants on campus, because criminals hide behind bushes.

Even in 2010 the University was busy improving its buildings.

Students seemed to be upset with the University’s choice of which buildings to upgrade first.

In 2007 a fire broke out at Huis Visser. None of the students got hurt. This cartoonist saw the fire as an ample oppurtunity to have a braai.

Die Matie turns five years old On 2 August 1946 a dinner was held in Dagbreek residence to celebrate the fifth birthday of Die Matie. G.J. Roux was the editor of the time and is also the oldest living editor of Die Matie.
