Halaal controversy in Neelsie Spar

ERIN WALLS

T

he KwikSpar in the Neelsie is allegedly not adhering to the necessary Halaal practices during the preparation of its food. Although the Spar is in possession of and displays a Halaal certificate, some Muslim students at Stellenbosch University (SU) are saying that the retailer is negligent in its handling of Halaal certified products received from its suppliers. According to Ismaeel Latief, chairperson of the Muslim Student Association (MSA) and a second year BA (International Studies) student, the presence of pork especially undermines the requirements of Halaal. “Halaal [means that there has to be] no traces of pork in [the food]. That is one of the things that is prohibited in Islam. So therefore, it cannot come into contact with any surface, utensils or instruments that have touched pork, as that would immediately make it not Halaal. So even though KwikSpar

may be receiving products which are certified as Halaal from their suppliers, it may come into contact with pork in the kitchen, as KwikSpar has no regulation on it. “This has been an ongoing issue since 2019, whenever the problem is brought to Spar’s attention, the certificate is taken down, however shortly after always gets put back up,” Latief said. According to an article on the website of the Muslim Judicial Council (MJC) (SA), halāl is an Arabic word and religious concept that means “lawful or permissible”. The article reads: “An halāl-approved commodity, consumable or liquid should have the status of being uncompromisingly hygienically-clean and healthy; not contaminated, not adulterated and it is wholesome, thus fit for Muslim consumption. The MJC, according to its website, is “a Muslim Judiciary whose main functions relate to religious guidance, education, Fatawa, Da’wah, Halaal certification and Social Development”. Junaid Bray, manager of Mar-

iam’s Kitchen, a food outlet in The Neelsie which is apparently strictly Halaal, says “there cannot be any bacon on sight and there has to be at least one Muslim employee there at all times. If not, it is not Halaal. So yes, a store could have Halaal produce from their suppliers, but what occurs in the kitchen once they receive it, could immediately make it not Halaal.” Criteria I of the Muslim Judicial Council Halaal Trust (MJCHT), states that “at least one of two Muslim personnel who are trained and well-informed about Halaal standards and Halaal requirements shall, at all times, be on site and in control of the goods received”. Maarten Venter, the co-owner and managing director of KwikSpar in the Neelsie, confirmed that the retailer only has a certificate stating the products they receive from their supplier are Halaal, however no certification that the preparation abides with Halaal within the store itself. “I cannot say that there is no cross contamination. We have nev-

er claimed that we are Halaal, only our suppliers of certain brands are,” Venter said. Fadeelah Williams, a member of the Student Representative Council (SRC) said, “In August last year I asked the female who was serving the Chikka Chicken burgers if it was halaal, to which she said yes and that they follow Halaal practices, as well as the next time when I asked on a separate occasion.” Williams claimed she also asked again during the registration period this year if they are Halaal, to which they responded yes again. Sheri Govender, a second year Education student, said that in August last year she went to buy lunch at Chikka Chicken. “When we went, we noticed the [Halaal] certificate was not up anymore and we had heard rumours that it was actually Halaal,” she said. “We asked to see the certificate and the worker went to the back and showed us a copy of the certificate that was in a flip file, which was quite strange, as usually businesses have the certificate framed

or on display.” Fredrick Boer, a first year Bcom (Financial Accounting) student said that he visited Spar in the first week of the academic year when he arrived in Stellenbosch. “I did not know if they were Halaal or not as I was new, so I asked the ladies behind the counter if the food was halaal, to which they replied and said that everything between the Chikka Chicken and pies is Halaal.” Latief claims that Muslim students are being exploited. “There are very few Halaal certified places within the Neelsie, Mariams being one of them. However, they are expensive, and again, unknowing Muslim students will then go to Spar, see the certificate for the supplier and are told it is Halaal by the workers, which is false,” said Latief. When informed of the alleged misinformation Muslim students are presented with by Spar employees,Venter claimed that he was unaware of this and that “they should not be [telling Muslim students], as it is not true”.

Meme commotion W BRYNLEY VAN AARDT

ILGENHOF Men’s Residence has recently come under fire after an incident labelled as homophobic took place in the form of a post on social media. Wilgenhof’s newcomers Instagram page, @die_jarr, posted a picture of a Stellenbosch student in their story and the caption, “When you want to take our O-week away because you were accidentally put in a male res in your first year”. The student in the photo, who has asked to stay anonymous, said, “The matter concerning the image is considered as an expression of intolerance of gender parity, posted on the Wilgenhof Instagram page in response to recommendations to suspend certain unwelcoming practices as recommended and executed by the appropriate institutional authority.” Anti-GBV SU posted on their Facebook page in reply to the incident and said, “Members of Wilgenhof Residence have posted a homophobic image of a queer leader on campus. We were made aware of this and would like to refer Wilgenhof and the community to their signed memorandum and response. If they fail to resolve this matter, we will intervene.” In this memorandum, signed in 2019, Wilgenhof stated that “Wilgenhof is an inclusive place for all” and that if anyone found guilty of going against such inclusivity,

MALEFICENT MEME The meme on the Instagram page created by Wilgenhof Newcomers. What also increases the difficulty of finding the individual(s) in question is that the login details of the page were open for general access in the bio of the page, meaning that anyone could have gained the ability to post. Furthermore, no preventative action could be tak-

en as the leadership had not been aware of the existence of the page until after the incident had already occurred,” GC van Heerden, Wilgenhof Prim, said. Van Heerden said he was not aware the page even existed until he was notified of the post by Wilgenhof’s current ResEd coordinator. “The first-year group was addressed, and it was emphasized how unacceptable such behaviour is. This was followed by the leadership and the residential head addressing the entire House. Correspondence was released notifying the cluster leadership of the situation and our stance,” Van Heerden said. An engagement regarding the incident and how this pertains to gender identity and sexuality was held last week at Wilgenhof. This session was facilitated by their current Cluster Assistant, Tendani Tshauambea, accompanied by a representative of QueerUS. “I was given a brief to have an information session engagement. I had an engagement around homophobia and LGBT+ awareness. It took the format of a quiz with a subsequent discussion which followed on the questions we dealt with in the quiz. “I was contacted by Wilgenhof after their [House Committee] had a meeting about the incident and one of them recommended me as a facilitator,” said Tshauambea. The SU Equality Unit has been made aware of the incident and is now pending investigation.

Verlore Valentynsdag DOMINIQUE VERSTER

My skootrekenaar was onder

Dennis Davis delf diep in geregtheidsdebat CARLA VISAGIE

I don’t know the origins, but I feel you need to know what each thing represents, cause at the end of the day you’re a learner here and it is beneficial for you to know. What if these statues or buildings have some meaning or value that you don’t understand or don’t know, and you can attribute it to your own?

I know Jan Marais Park, but I don’t know who he was. There is a lot of culture in Stellenbosch, so I think it’s cool to know where the names come from. There are two Jan’s and we would like to know who they are. People think it is just a bunch of names, so it’s important that we know who they were.

Hierdie Universiteit bestaan al so lank, ek dink dis belangrik dat ons weet wie hierdie mense was waarna alles vernoem is.

fter the final draft of the Visual Redress Policy was granted approval at the Stellenbosch University (SU) Council meeting last year, various changes to the visual landscape will continue to happen throughout the year. According to the Visual Redress Policy draft the “[the visual changes] will assist SU in its drive for transformation in and through visual redress”. “The Visual Redress Policy will guide visual changes on SU campuses specifically through new art installations, the removal or contextualisation of historically sensitive art and other symbols, campus signage, the naming and renaming of buildings, venues and other facilities and premises, improving accessibility to facilities, and so forth,” the policy reads. According to a joint response to Die Matie from Dr Leslie van Rooi, chair of the VR committee Senior Director: Social Impact and Transformation and prof Elmarie Constandius, senior lecturer at the Visual Arts department, “research shows that visual redress may provide a means to attend to underlying, unspoken and unconscious expressions of exclusion that remain in higher education institutions on South African campuses today”. One of the new visual art installations will include a history lane artwork next to Wilgenhof on the corner of Victoria and Ryneveld street as, according to Van Rooi and Costandius, this location “connect the histories of the town on the one hand [and] with the university on the other hand”. “The historical significance includes the slavery history, the link between the town and the battle of

Dr. Lee-Anne Terblanche, Stellenbosch University (SU) alumna, has come up with a decarbonisation framework which has the aim to tackle the large amounts of carbon emissions produced from road freight transport, the second largest contributor of carbon emissions after electricity in South Africa. “This is the first and currently only decarbonisation framework in South Africa,” Terblanche said. Terblanche, who obtained her doctorate in Transport and Logistics from Stellenbosch University (SU) in December said, she had to choose a topic close to her heart and for her that “was the environment”. “The framework is based on one that is being written in the United Kingdom (UK). However,

due to the fact that South Africa and the UK environments are so different, I had to ensure it was adaptable to South Africa.” According to Terblanche she had to consider the flooding that had recently occurred in Durban as well as the high levels of crime, such as hijacking. “The framework was made so that it is easily adaptable to South Africa and does not involve a lot of cost,” said Terblanche. Terblanche identified four key decisions which a company can make, which is then further broken down into 9 carbon variables. “Missed time slots, driving behaviour such as not abiding by traffic rules, theft and hijacking are among these variables. By improving on these, such as avoiding unnecessary trips and trucks driving around empty, carbon emissions could be cut by 27%.”

Take a hike! In Stellenbosch TOM LEE

T

he small town of Stellenbosch is known for being a hub of constant activity, hustle and bustle and the occasional outing to the local pub or club. What most people don’t know, however, is that a few of the greatest playgrounds known to man lie just a few kilometres away. The mere mountain trail is all it takes to discover a journey into a world unknown…a world situated twenty minutes from Stellenbosch.

– Die begin van ‘n goeie storie “Dude, that’s the very definition of catfishing. You just catfished your parents!” – Students discussion the limits of catfishing “Daai is nie speletjies nie. – Fietsryer oor hul rit af in Merriman

The pressures and constraints of being a student can be overwhelming and sometimes detrimental to the psyche. One of the best ways to ease tension and enjoy oneself to the fullest is to set out on a hike of any distance or difficulty. The geology that surrounds Stellenbosch provides for some of the most magnificent mountaineering trails and summits in the Western Cape. The Stellenbosch mountain, Jonkershoek valley and Franschhoek mountains, especially, can become settings for an awesome day, or even night, out in the Boland wilderness. Put on your hiking boots and tighten the straps on your backpack. Our guide to the top three hikes in the greater Stellenbosch area will have you beating about the bush in no time.

Stellenbosch Mountain

The first of these hikes is known by many a student. However, few are aware of the lonesome trial and contour path that runs up the north facing slope of the Stellenbosch Mountain. Starting at Coetzenburg rugby fields, the hiking trail shoots up past the first cross and begins to hairpin up the face of the mountain. This well-maintained path contours up towards the second cross and finds itself dipping down into a two-hundred-meter plateau. Many confuse this initial summit as being the end of the road. Don’t be fooled – it is merely a means to an end. The summit continues as one begins to traverse across the south side of the mountain with a view of Table Mountain, Newlands Ravine and the greater False Bay area. The rocky outcrop at the top of the climb will indicate that you are nearly at journey’s end. Be on the lookout for the trig beacon that indicates the highest area of the hike. The way down is rather simple to find but difficult to descend. In order to find the trail down, continue towards the Helderberg mountain reserve and head down Paradyskloof (North West facing slope). This scramble down will end off just above the suburban area of Paradyskloof. You can either walk back through Eden Forest towards Coetzenburg or catch an uber or arranged lift from the suburban area.

BETTER THAN A WALK IN THE PARK Enjoy the view as you stroll through the picturesque mountainPhoto: Tom Lee tribute to my love for it, but the power that the mountain provides to the spirit is like nothing I’ve ever experienced on any mountain in Southern Africa, besides that of the Drakensberg. The south west facing peak begins at the base of the Jonkershoek Valley and rises up to an elevation of 1494m above sea level. This hike has various routes which one can take. The most appropriate, however, is up Nerinakloof and down Langrivierkloof. This uitstappie goes through both forest canopy, grassland and rocky outcrops and at the summit provides a breath-taking view of the entire Stellenbosch, Pniel, Paarl, Cape Town and False Bay area. The numerous cliff faces and 200m drops can make the trek daunting at times. However, the satisfaction felt after completing such a climb is well worth the exertion. The descent down Langrivierkloof has some of the best fauna and flora in the Jonkershoek Val-

ley. During this time of year, expect to see a variety of Proteas. The Protea cynaroides, or King Protea is especially magnificent. Various birds of prey, such as black and fish eagles, populate the area and share it with buck like the klipspringer. The beautiful tree canopies and forest vegetation that mark the descent merit an honourable mention and the crystal-clear streams that flow through them are perfect for a dip.

Swartboskloof

The Swartboskloof trail begins in the heart of the Jonkershoek valley. To access it, you will have to make use of the Jonkershoek gate (which will require a R50 entry fee or a wild card) and drive roughly ten minutes to the start of the trail which is situated halfway between the main gate and the start of the first waterfall hike. The early stages of the hike heads through a flat area of land with beautiful fynbos on either

side of the trail. A tough ascent with an elevation gain of 900m follows the 1/2km stroll through the fynbos garden and plateaus at the top. The route from the top of Swartboskloof is straightforward and runs parallel to the source of the Eerste River as it winds its way around towards Guardian Peak. Along this path, the entire Helderberg basin is visible with Somerset West, Sir Lowry’s pass, Strand and Gordons Bay being within sight. The trail comes to a T-junction with a trail towards Boegoekloof on the right and one to Kurktrekkers to the left. In this instance, the trail down Kurktrekkers is the appropriate and, like the name entails, winding way down towards the first and second waterfall. The hike concludes on the riverside trail that runs alongside the Eerste River towards the beginning of the hike. The total distance is 18km and on average will take 6 hours to complete. The immense joy of completing this hike is what keeps me coming back time after time.

Derdens wou ek graag iets doen waar ek kreatief kon wees.

Stellenbosch: the thrifter’s Dreamland ALEXANDER BRAND AND JEAN-MARIE UYS

STELLENBOSCH is a true haven for thrifters. If you open your heart and mind to a few items of preloved clothing, you’ll be hardpressed to justify buying expensive clothes ever again. But don’t let us persuade you. Take a look at the ample offerings right at your doorstep and enter a world of adventure and, most crucially, savings. For a die-hard thrifter, the Hospice Shop is clothing heaven. Almost every town has one, but the Stellenbosch shop is unique for the sole reason that it has a bookstore as well. With the clothing section you can find anything from pants to jackets to jewellery from as little as R5. It also caters for both sexes. The Hospice Shop receives all their clothes through donations, and they use the money that they earn to fund the Stellenbosch Hospice which offers free medical care. Almost Famous is a relatively new shop in Stellenbosch. They recently relocated from Dorp Street to the bottom of Plein Street. Because they offer new clothing as well, it might be a bit pricier than your usual thrift store. Even though it is quite a small shop, it offers a wide range of clothing for both men and women. Their selection includes branded T’s, vintage knitted jerseys, velvet cozzies, denim jackets and funky glasses. Definitely a must

rative pants, blouses and even doilies. They are currently having a sale, so make sure to drop by soon.

Second Chances is one of Stellenbosch’s hidden gems and can be found down Ryneveld Street. It offers a mix between new and vintage clothing. The owner of the store says, “The heart of the store is to uplift people and make sure that everyone has the chance to look nice, rich or poor.” The style of the clothing is very old-school with full dresses, deco-

If you are on a quest to militarise your style with a pair of Doc Martens, Dreamland Vintage is your best bet. They are best described as “A dreamy collection of vintage, new and everything in between”, as seen on their Instagram page. The store can’t be regarded as a vintage shop, as they stock some relatively new clothes. Howev-

er, the focus is on stocking up on quality high end pieces. Think in the line of Levis high waisted mom jeans, corduroy pants and 90s sneakers. Unisex floral shirts and groovy glasses. Their main branch is in Cape Town off Kloof Street, and, due to high demand from the Stellies campus, they have branched out to 111 Dorp Street at the end of last year. Vintage and thrift shopping have grown extremely popular and it is therefore no surprise that

many thrift hunters have made their merchandise available online. Instagram is a highly successful platform to showcase thrifted or second-hand gems which are sold at prices that only makes you second guess an order at the sight of the courier cost. Vintage Thrift Hub (@vintage_ thrift_hub) is solely based online and orders are placed via their website (www.vintage thrift hub. com). Their following of 3K is a testimony to their high variety and regularly uploaded stock, as well as the occasional scarce bidding item. Another account to keep your eyes on is LootsinOnline (@lootsinonline). Their stock consists of mostly ladies’ items which are also made available on their website (www.lootsin.com). Their collections are vastly vintage and preowned, with handmade embroideries to upcycle some pieces and handmade collars. Founded Clothing Co. is a brand dealing in second-hand clothing fit for the adventurer on a budget. They rely on pop-up shops and events to showcase their merchandise and can be recognised as the stall with the warm red carpets and affordable clothing of all sorts. From sandals, to unisex jackets and shirts, to flowy summer dresses and over the shoulder bags. Keep an eye out on their Instagram to stay in the loop of when and where they will set up shop next (@founded_clothing).

Aandklas teaches us of latest bands

t is time for another Klein Saterdag and Aandklas is making sure this one falls on the flip side of the normal town routine. On 26 February the “course” is welcoming three major local guest “lecturers” to the stage: Red Sheep, Lady and the Cage and Lez Cortez.

band. Furthermore, they are currently in the process of finishing up their first two singles to be released on all major music platforms as soon as possible. Most of the recording work for a whole new load of songs has been done already and will be released in the next few months.

Red Sheep (@redsheepmusic) Red Sheep is a two man band whose sound can best be described as acoustic, indie or folk. Richard Max Koenig is on piano, harmonica and vocals while Estian Daniël Maree is on loop pedal, guitar, harmonica and vocals. The band got its name from Estian’s (nicknamed “Dorper” after the type of sheep) curly hair and Max’s red hair. Hence, Red Sheep. The two met at Huis Visser men’s residence where they led the “Sailors” (the residence’s acapella group) to many category awards and a qualification for the National Final. On 18 July 2018 Red Sheep was born and has been setting the bar high ever since. They hope to not be just another student band from Stellenbosch but are aiming to reach high status in the music industry – think high profile gigs and songs made available on various music platforms. At selected gigs they add to the crowd’s experience by bringing the whole “herd” along, adding a set of drums (Robert “Rob” Cable) and a lead and electric guitar (Owald “Olly” van Schalkwyk). In studio, they also record with the full

Lez Cortez (@lezcortezband) “Young, uncompromising and crazy... a band that wants to play unfiltered, unadulterated rock ‘n roll”, said Danie du Toit, Spoegwolf lead singer, about this four man alt-rock band from Stellenbosch. Heads started to roll to their take on rock on 6 March 2019 as they opened for The Voodoo Cats and Venus and the Snake at Aandklas. Shortly after their first gig, they had another one lined up at the Bok Lounge and has been taking one booking after the other ever since. The group has Wessel Krige on vocals, Neil Botes on guitar, André ‘Fikkie’ Fick reforming rhythms on drums and Herman Redelinghuys on bass. In July 2019 Lez Cortez opened the stage for famous alternative Afrikaans band, Spoegwolf, at Die Boer in Durbanville. They also warmed up the scene for De Wallen at Mercury Live in the Mother City. The band was privileged enough to headline an event at the very venue where they performed their debut and will be returning to that very stage this Wednesday night. Who knows what they might have in store for

This beaded sheep was gifted to Maree on his birthday, and it was decided that Wool-I-Am ought to be the band’s mascot and be present at every show. Lady & The Cage (@lady_and_the_ cage) Lady & The Cage is a surfy, indie alternative basement band of friends. Their music is filled with crooning blues-influences and soul-stirring lyrics that give serious song writing a playful twist. The band was founded on one of the “stoepe” of Eendrag Men’s Residence during a late night jam

session. The lead singer is Francois Van Zyl (Law), with Thomas Edwards (BEng (Industrial) III) on lead guitar and Kyle Mathews (BEng (Industrial) III) on rhythm guitar, and the collective is rounded off by their drummer Walter Travers (BSc (Human Life Sciences)) and Anton Prinsloo (BEng (Industrial) III) on bass. They had their first gig a month after getting the band together at one of Eendrag’s residence events. After getting a real taste for the stage they slowly started to come back for more and seriously began building their setlist. Some of their greatest gigs to this day are their first Aandklas gig in September last year, Bergfest with My Brother Einstein and Jackal and the Wind in Paarl, and the outdoor party

stage at Damestouch, where they also shared the lights with My Brother Einstein, The Southeasters and Jack Parow. “Our setlist for 26 February is probably going to be the best setlist we’ve played thus far. We will be playing all of our originals (seven of those bad boys), and a collection of cool covers to get the crowd singing at the top of their lungs. The band has been working super hard to get our songs tight and we can guarantee that we will at least get some medium to intense head-bobbing going. We’re playing with two epic other bands as well, and we believe that the combination of great music will ensure that everyone attending is going to walk away grinning like a clown on a helium high,”said the

Are they a band or a bust? RENÉ ESTERHUYSE

ALL music lovers – listen up! Band or Bust is almost here – and it is the perfect place to discover new tunes, or simply to enjoy a fun Saturday afternoon with friends, good music and a good vibe. As part of the Toyota US Woordfees, Texx and the City presents this exciting new competition at the Stellenbosch University Visual Arts Quad on 7 March. Band or Bust is an initiative with the purpose of showcasing underground and independent talent, to give upcoming musicians the opportunity to perform at a major festival, and to aid them in their future endeavours. The top five finalists, picked out of more than 100 entries, will battle it out for the overall prize: R10 000 in cash, the recording of a single under the guidance of Theo Crous and Karen Zoid, as well as a professional photoshoot. Tallulah Gray, one of the finalists, is excited to perform: “I feel so lucky to be amongst the five finalists chosen to participate

in such an incredible event. The other artists playing are absolutely incredible and I am honoured to share a stage with people who care so much about their music,” Gray said. Theunis van der Merwe, a member of another finalist, the folk-acoustic band BrotherBrother, agrees that this event gives valuable exposure to musicians. “It is an incredible opportunity,” Van der Merwe said. The audience can look forward to a varied program, with genres ranging from intimate acoustic-folk to hard rock. Gray describes her sound as “acoustic alternative rock with influences ranging from punk to soul” and promises a “powerful and intimate show”. Her lyrics reflect issues that she is passionate about. “The music I write has strong political influences and I often draw on my love for history or passion for current affairs as well as pop culture and movies that I love,” she explains. BrotherBrother uses a range of different instruments, including

the acoustic guitar, banjo, bass, harmonica, cajon and drum for their upbeat, folky sound. Van der Merwe says that the audience can look forward to “an intimate and comfortable performance with a special focus on our hand-clapping and foot-stomping songs.” He believes BrotherBrother’s three voice harmonies and meaningful lyrics are some of their strongest assets. For those who enjoy something a bit more experimental, Cistamatic’s Gabbi Le Roux, with her wide pool of influences, including rock, trip hop, industrial, disco, pop and experimental electronica, and lyrics that question issues such as gender and sexuality, is a must-see. Other finalists include the indie rock band, Champion Trees, from Cape Town, and, Venus and the Snake, the hard rock group that claimed first prize at last year’s Battle of the Bands at Aandklas. Band or Bust clearly has something for everyone, so don’t miss this awesome event! The action kicks off at 16:00 and tickets are available at the door for R50.

OH BROTHER! Catch one of the finalists of the Band or Bust competition live at the Hofmeyer Saal on 5 March. Tickets are sold on Quicket for R80. or all you theatre freaks out there, Woordfees is back! The same festival that brought you Die Gangsters, Tien Duisend Ton, Endgame and Katvoet has returned with a variety of new productions and fresh Stellenbosch University (SU) talent. Here is a sneak peek into the Woordfees theatre line-up of this year: “Bless” die blou bal “Bless” die blou bal is an Afrikaans comedy that questions the nature of virginity and sex as a societal norm. The play revolves around the crisis that character Kristen Cilliers faces as she slowly approaches her 30th birthday as a virgin. “The play is a quirky take on what it means to be a virgin and the pressure that people experience to be sexually active and super open when sometimes they’re just not inherently that way,” explains writer and director Ayden Kruger. “We performed this play last year and the audience loved it; they were rolling on the floor. I would really recommend it to any student,” Kruger said. The production also features some talent from the local SU drama department, namely Jean du Plessis, Ayden Kruger and Anya Human. Extra Large, please? Produced and written by Matie drama alumnus Mercy Kannemeyer, the comedy Extra Large, please? delivers significantly relevant commentary on the unrealistic beauty ideals that are perpetuated by the fashion industry. The production manages to deal with such an important topic in an enormously funny way and remains a hit at every performance. Wag, wat? The play focuses on the internal and interpersonal conflict that four young coloured students of SU face when they move into a flat that previously acted as a slave lodge during colonial era Stellenbosch. In the process, they are spurred to question their heritage and also what it means to be coloured in modern day South Africa. According to the stage manager, Andrea Hofmeyer, the play speaks to a young, student audience and continues to be a hit at every performance.

ew moviegoers will not have heard the name Parasite mentioned in their circles. In fact, due to the enormous extent of Oscar buzz that director Bong Joon-ho’s masterpiece has generated, only a small amount of totally isolated hermits can probably claim that they know nothing of the movie. It wasn’t born of Hollywood and reviewers and viewers alike are going crazy for it. Like all good success stories are, Parasite’s momentous rise is truly something to take note of. I certainly feel like it’s one of the best movies I have seen in a long time. What is it about this

Parasite movie that has so thoroughly captured me? I ask myself. After a bit of thinking, I suspect I can finally provide an adequate answer. Parasite, without being frivolous about it, is profoundly exciting. I think where award-winning movies are concerned, people often praise their use of so-called “symbolism”. Dreadful word. I’m not saying that directors are not quite adept at conveying poignant messages with complex metaphors and symbols. They certainly are, and these elements often form the backbone of a visual endeavour. What I am saying is that the weight of expec-

tation for “symbolism” can and does empty a film of what is often its most alluring asset – entertainment. Parasite entertains, and it does so with weight and temperance. It is a sumptuous blend of drama, comedy, romance, mystery, of suspense and horror. Under normal circumstances, when a film flaunts with such a variety of genres, it either suffers from a lack of direction or a crippling identity crisis. Not so with Parasite. It lightly flits from one mode to another, the transitions seamless, the moments gripping. The film in its entirety made

But let’s not allow ourselves to be carried away completely on a wave of excitement. Make sure to apply your eyes, ears and mind to what Bong Joonho might be saying with Parasite. Ever-present is the very pressing theme of the extreme inequalities in our societies, and the film conveys it in all its incarnations. There are various symbols and metaphors that will delight the trained mind. Do not, however, miss one of the film’s most iconic features in an endless pursuit of “symbolism”. Parasite is ludicrously entertaining, and rightly so.

me think of a good tennis player. Roger Feder can convert defence to attack with one well-placed, wellplanned shot. Parasite does much the same thing. One can never become complacent in a moment of comedy or domestic felicity. A single shot, a subtle change in the score, or a small tweak in an actor’s performance can drag the viewer to the edge of their seat or send them reeling in horror. The film is a rollercoaster. One that spins your head with exhilaration but leaves an ever so slight tinge of nausea in the back of your throat. Those are the best sort of rollercoasters, of course.

Boys’ high schools: Breeding grounds for toxic masculinity TOM LEE

* Tom Lee is a 3rd year LLB student. He has a passion for difference and change.

T

he year of 2019 provided for traumatic scenes in South African history. The deaths of Uyinene Mrwetyana, Jesse Hess and many more young women, instilled an already felt fear into young women pursuing further education around South Africa. The pervasive safety issues, and disregard to women’s personal identities experienced by women in South Africa was eventually met by President Cyril Ramaphosa addressing the nation with promises to amend the Criminal Justice System and its punishments imposed on men who abuse women. This, however, has its limitations.

Retaliation of such a manner will only single out individual perpetrators from committing serious crimes against women and lacks the ability to rectify the effects of toxic masculinity amongst mortals in society. The question of adequate reform, in my opinion, can only be answered by singling out the institutions which allow for macho masculinity to pass through into society. One such problematic institution links to a large majority of Stellenbosch University males, this being boys’ high schools. The phrase “Boys will be boys”

is a well-known excuse and cover up for the traits associated with misogyny and sexism that riddle the society that we currently live in. The recent events have allowed people in South Africa to start questioning these traits and how these traits can be eradicated from society. The aim of eradicating these traits will have no effect if the root of the problem is not identified. It is important to note that these traits have a closer nest than one could perceive. The first of these proverbial nests emerged in South Africa in 1829 and in my opinion ever have provided as a socialization mechanism for the ingraining of toxic masculinity into these so called “boys” over the decades. The traditions associated with boy’s high schools supposedly filter through characteristics such as strength, courage, honour, integrity and respect. This is, however, to a larger extent, false, for in these patriarchal institution’s characteristics such as entitlement, disrespect, secretive behaviour, immorality, sexism and misogyny emerge and become a part of young men’s psyche. Traditionally, when a young grade eight boy arrives for his first day at school, he is told that he is the equivalent to “a shark’s sh*t shadow” and that essentially, he amounts to nothing in the school community. The year is generally one of hardship, filled with emo-

tional abuse and sometimes physical abuse, which has been seen at schools around the Country. The subsequent years see a young boy becoming witness to three years of similar abuse. Finally, the final year of school is one of excitement and joy. It is also a year which sees most matrics in boys’ high schools becoming perpetrators of the same emotional and physical abuse thus perpetuating institutional short-comings and reproducing toxic masculinity. The vicious cycle of abuse continues throughout. The vulnerable grade 8s are preyed upon and the adolescent “manne” seem to find their best pick when it comes down to who will receive the brunt of the rough housing, that supposedly allows these boys to just be boys. What then happens when the floodgates are opened, and the youth are set free into the tertiary education sector? This is where the patriarchal traits that are instilled in boy’s high shools become more problematic. What does a matriculant boy do with such traits now that he doesn’t have a junior to take it out on, to carry his bags, to run to the tuckshop for him or to whack a few tennis balls at? Well, maybe this behaviour transitions into a sexist whatsapp chat or a few catcalls aimed at women, who knows what else could materialize. These traditions coupled with boys being isolated in a single gen-

der school allows for toxic masculinity to become second nature to most who are ignorant enough to reject notions of equality. Perhaps this cycle of abuse doesn’t only start once a male matriculant leaves his prestigious school. Perhaps this abuse takes place during the high school career of young boys. The first instance of gender based abuse that I witnessed and can vividly remember was in grade 10. It took place in my mathematics class. The bright flash of a phone camera lit up the entire classroom and sent the whole class into a frenzy. In the meanwhile, the female substitute teacher went red in the face and rushed out the classroom in utter embarrassment. Imagine that! A 16-year-old boy taking an upskirt photo of a teacher who was merely doing her job. The entitlement of young boys, both to violate a woman in a position of authority and perpetuate masculinity which subjugated her, as a result of her gender must surely constitute gender-based violence. Despite the institutional power dynamic of a teacher-pupil relationship, which ought to have protected the substitute teacher, male entitlement empowered a young boy to exercise his masculine privilege in a way that constituted gendered violence as it violated her personhood and consent. It is these cycles which, once instilled in high school, repeat themselves throughout life.

Anyway, the internationally acclaimed feature film brought to us by the auteur of Beauty (Skoonheid), is coming to our doorstep only a day after its South African cinematic premiere! Everyone, old and young, needs to see this film – even if you’re not a… fan of drama. Virtually anyone can relate to the trauma that bullies and wars leave in their wake. A ticket to the screening on the 14th of March at 13:00 in Rhenish includes a panel discussion with Oliver Hermanus himself. Wat/Waiting Dance is definitely not dead. Experience emotionally loaded narratives beautifully portrayed through the language of contemporary dance. As part of the festival’s brand-new dance category,

this esteemed Baxter show is not to be missed. The program promises a combination of neo-classical and minimalistic electronic music to compliment the dexterity and tenderness of the choreography.

Vanjaar is daar drie venues waar feesgangers Stand-Up kan geniet. Friends go head-tohead in the Straatmyl LOLITA DE ABREU

Dagbreek men’s residence is presenting their tenth annual Straatmyl on 4 March, where they will participate in a mile-long run along Victoria Street at 18:00. The Straatmyl is held in honour of De Villiers Lamprecht, Stellenbosch University’s (SU) very own Matie athlete, who was the first South African (SA) athlete to run a dream mile. There will be seven races with thirteen divisions. These divisions include boys and girls from as young as thirteen years old and a masters division for adults over forty-five years old. There will also be an open men and women’s division, which is said to attract large numbers. This year, athletes Jerry Motsau and Luan Munnik will be competing in the Straatmyl for the first time. Motsau is a recurring SA champion in 1500m and has won a bronze medal at the World Student Games. “I am so excited to be part of [the] Dagbreek street mile this year. I am really looking forward [to it]” Motsau says. Motsau and Munnik will be ri-

vals in the streets come 4 March, but day-to-day they are much more than that. “Knowing Jerry as a close friend and [an] even closer training partner, he’s always a consistently tough athlete and a force to be reckoned with,” Munnik says. Munnik is a junior champion of the 1500m and was the first junior at the Eden Mile series to run a dream mile. He says that he is thrilled to be participating. Motsau and Munnik will be facing each other in a dream mile, for which Munnik says he is “on the grind and preparing extra hard for”. “Luan is without a doubt talented and is always my toughest competition when we race together,” says Motsau. Racing on foot is not the only thing to look forward to when attending the Straatmyl. Dagbreek also hosts the only mile-long skate-boarding race in SA. A DJ and a dance crew called “The Unknown”, from the “Make Me Famous” reality series, will provide the entertainment. Prizes and medals will be up for grabs, and a lucky draw will also take place.

Ammaarah Hendricks: achievements and adversities JEAN-MARIE UYS

Ammaarah Hendricks has what you would call an impressive resumé. Amongst other things, she was Sportswoman of the Year for Maties in 2018, and she represented South Africa at the Youth Olympics in Argentina. Most importantly, perhaps, she is a hockey player for the Maties first team. When asked what difficulties she has faced along her journey, Hendricks responded that some of the challenges she faced (and which she is still working on) is time management, nutrition and getting enough sleep. She stresses the need to have everything together and to maintain balance. It has not been an easy journey, but she has been competing since a very young age and says it gets easier with time. Hendricks has been doing karate since she was six years old and has also been playing hockey for a very long time. She was also involved in her high school and was school prefect and team captain. “When I was in first year in 2018 it was an amazing year: six gold medals, Maties sportswoman of the year, it was crazy. Everything that could go well did go well. Whereas last year, we went from coming first in the U/21 Western Province tournament to coming seventh. You can’t appreciate achievements and doing well without the adversities. Take it with a pinch of salt, you have to fight to be the best every day and be grateful (also one of my things). It can be taken away from

you any second. I could be injured tomorrow and not be able to play sports for the rest of my life. I need to know that I had done whatever I could’ve done, even if I could’ve done better I want to know that I gave it my best in that exact moment,” Hendricks said. Despite her first year success, 2019 was especially hard for the hockey star. The workload, combined with training, got to a point where she started getting anxiety. “It taught me to take responsibility for my own life and well being. To know when ‒ and be mature enough ‒ to ask for help when you need it the most,” said Hendricks. She also stated that, above her sport and academics, being humble, doing community service and giving back are very important to her. “It reminds me that we have so much that other people don’t even dream of having. Just to work hard on staying humble, that’s a big thing for me,” said Hendricks. Still doing karate while also training for hockey and going for her second time being a black belt is what Hendricks cited as being “her next move”. The multifaceted sportswoman said she should be competing in nationals during April right now, and if she does well then, she’ll compete in the world champs next year. “My major goal right now is to make the SA under 21 side and to play AFCON (Africa Cup of Nations) this year. If we win gold, then we’ll play in the junior world cup next year,” said Hendricks.

Elke Donderdag is egter

Matie and medallist face the Dusi KESIA ABRAHAMS

T

racey Oellermann, a BA (Sports Science) student, will be taking part in the Dusi Canoe Marathon, a threeday race, from 27 to 29 February 2020 in KwaZulu-Natal. Oellermann will be participating in the race alongside Bridgitte Hartley, a South African sprint canoer and Olympic metalist. In 2009, Hartley won a bronze medal in the K-1 1000m event at the 2009 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships in Dartmouth followed by another bronze medal at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Hartley’s partner from two years ago decided not to take part in the upcoming Dusi alongside Hartley which lead her to Oellermann. “The Dusi is a three-day race, forty kilometers each day and a lot of running with the boat so she was looking for a paddler that is quite strong and also can run, and one of my strengths is running,” said Oellerman. This is not their first race together. In 2019, Oellermann want-

ed to take part in a 20km but did not have partner. “I asked her if she wanted to do it and we did it together and paddled really nicely so when she was deperately looking for a partner, we decided to do it,” said Oellermann. “I’ve learnt so much paddling with her, and I’ve gotten so much stronger since paddling with her,” said Oellermann. Oellermann, started canoeing in her first year at Epworth High School. Epworth is the top canoeing school in the country. “In grade ten and eleven, I started taking it more seriously and I did my first Dusi,” said Oellerman. This will be Oellermann’s fourth Dusi race but doing the Dusi, especially as a student has not been easy “Training for this race has been quite a big commitment, you start in November, so its four or five months completely committed to training,” said Oellermann. While in Stellenbosch, Oellermann trains at a dam that is 6km outside of Stellenbosch that is only a one km lap. “Majority of my training is done in KZN through the holidays

and it's better training grounds,” said the KwaZulu-Natal local. Oellermann despite hopping between two provinces manages to train all year round. In a seven-day week, Oellermann trains twice a day. Her train-

ing involves an 8km run every morning at 5:00 and a minimum of an hour paddling session in the afternoon. “It’s definitely nice that I had the holidays to train because now coming back to varsity, you feel like you’re getting sick because you can’t keep up,” said Oeller-

mann. Nevertheless, she is both nervous and excited for the race.

“This year’s Dusi is going to be one of the most competitive Dusi’s that they’ve had in the past 25 years so it’s definitely going to be a big challenge.”
