Cyclists are shocked at Coetzenburg ERIN WALLS
M
arzelle van der Merwe and her boyfriend, Alex Ham and their dog had a violent experience at Coetzenburg on Tuesday evening. They were confronted by five men armed with an electric cattle prod. Van der Merwe, a postgraduate student in marketing from Stellenbosch University (SU) and an avid sportswomen, says that “she spends hours training at Coetzenburg.” “We parked near the Maties gym and rode down to the soccer fields, where there is a deep sandy track. Once we had gotten to the top and arrived at the T-Junction, we turned right towards where the cows are.” “Parallel to the single track
which runs alongside the jeep track, we saw two men come onto the single track and three were already standing on the jeep track.” “One of the men on the single track threw an electrical cattle prod to one of the men on the jeep track, which at the time, we thought was a stick.” Van der Merwe says at the time she did not suspect anything, until they began crossing the road. “They had no reason to be there, as there was a sharp slope, so they were very much approaching us,” Van der Merwe said. Ham had nearly gotten past them, but then turned around and saw that one of the men took a big step towards Van der Merwe, looking as though he had the intention to hit her with the cattle prod. Ham then
slammed on his brakes, resulting in both their bicycles colliding. Whilst this was all happening their dog, Benji, was trapped. “My boyfriend suddenly started getting loud and screamed, which must have put them off, as there were so many people around Coetzenburg at that time of day. Three of the men backed off but started approaching our dog,” Van der Merwe said. “Two of the other men began fighting with Alex. You could hear he was pushing back the cattle prod, and you could hear the electricity pulsing through it.” “I am unsure if they backed off because the situation was getting out of hand for them, or because there were so many people around the area.”
Van der Merwe ran down the road to find help, where she saw a couple with dogs and then collapsed to the ground. Van der Merwe’s bike was damaged in the crash and she could not ride away. According to Ham, Campus Security assured them that they would send patrols to Coetzenburg but did not ask for a detailed description of the perpetrators or the location of the incident. “Campus Security have been extremely helpful in determining why the incident was not handled properly,” Ham added. “We also called the Stellenbosch police station about five times, with no answer.”According to Martin Viljoen, SU spokesperson, the incident “is very unfortunate as there were a number of years

now in which there were a very limited number of attacks on people hiking or cycling in the area”. “The Stellenbosch Campus, including the mountain area of which a large part is SU property, is not exempt from criminal activities – in the same way as are experienced in the rest of the country. The fact that we are an open campus – and the mere fact that a huge part of the mountain is SU property – pose unique security challenges. For this reason, extensive safety and security systems are in place and continuously upgraded and improved. Unfortunately patrols and security measures cannot guarantee the absolute safety of all hikers and cyclists in a large mountainous area such as the Stellenbosch Mountain,” Viljoen said.

THE women of Huis ten Bosch seem to have a prolonged stay at Huis Marais ahead of them. The men’s residence will supposedly be their home until 2021, while Huis ten Bosch is being repaired and renovated after a fire destroyed ten rooms in the residence in August last year. According to a Stellenbosch University (SU) press release, the construction work is aimed at not only ensuring that the residence complies “with municipal safety regulations” but so that it can also be equipped with “modern kitchenettes, upgraded electrical and electronic equipment [and] a new IT fibre route.” The cost of this construction will amount to at least R62,5 million. The reparations of the Huis ten Bosch building that were set for completion by January 2020 have been extended to include the above-mentioned safety renovations and modern upgrades. This will leave the Huis ten Bosch community without their residence for at least another year. According to Ella van Rensburg, Huis ten Bosch prim, 72 Huis ten Bosch residents currently reside in the newer wing of Huis Marais, now known as Huis ten Bosch 2020. This wing is being operated as a separate residence to Huis Marais while also having a separate entrance. Huis ten Bosch 2020 also welcomed 18 newcomers this year. Huis Marais, however, was not allowed newcomers for the year 2020. This was announced in a

Despite the newly established Huis ten Bosch 2020, many senior residents are still being accommodated in alternative housing. 18 girls are currently living in the Armentum apartment block close to Helshoogte spar, and seven in university accommodation at 69 Vic-
toria street. According to the Corporate Communication Division of Stellenbosch University, both HtB 2020 and Victoria 69 offer the same services offered in other university residences, like free MatiesWifi, parking, and washing and cleaning services. Armentum residents, however, do not have access to MatiesWifi but are granted ten gigabytes of free data per month. The Huis ten Bosch community is seemingly staying positive in the face of the continued separation. “It is just a matter of getting used to the building, but [Huis ten Bosch] continues to be lekker and [we] are making it work,” Van Rensburg said.
AFTER postponing the election of the 2019/2020 SRC Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson since September last year, the election took place on Friday, 7 February. According to the minutes of a Student Parliament meeting held on 3 October last year, the original election date was postponed due to the fact that “the Military Academy captain had not been elected” as well as “allegations [that] were made on social media pertaining to some newly elected SRC members”. Three of the SRC members were investigated by an Extraordinary Sexual Harassment Advisory Panel after allegations of sexual misconduct were levelled against them. The Panel, however, concluded that there were no grounds for disciplinary action against the accused individuals, and advised the proceeding of the elections. Three SRC members stood as candidates for the position of Chairperson and after confusion over the proxy votes allocated to the SRC members, Lewis Mboko, a BCom (Economic Sciences) student, was voted in as Chairperson. Following the election of
Chairperson, there were three deadlocks for the position of Vice-Chair. None of the candidates could reach the positive vote, which is 50% plus one vote of the SRC members who voted. Due to the time constraint and as per the constitution, Mboko made the decision to postpone the election of the Vice-Chair to 12 February. The other executive positions will also be voted for then and the election will take place at 18:00 in the SRC’s Boardroom on the fourth floor of the Neelsie. In his speech for candidacy, Mboko stressed the need to work “hard, smart, efficient[ly], and most importantly together” to approach the problems of students. “It is my vision to build a strong, unified, selfless and student-caring team,” he said. Mboko said he aims to tackle issues such as gender-based violence, student debt, shuttle transport, food insecurity, xenophobia and homophobia. By the end of his term, Mboko envisions “an inclusive Stellenbosch University, where your race, your religion, your sexuality, your financial status and your country of birth are no barrier to you reaching your full potential.”

Square to close in 2021 BRYNLEY VAN AARDT
For the better part of a year, rumours have been circulating about whether the Drostdy Square, commonly known as “The Square”, will be closing. Those rumours have now been proven true. After receiving most of the approval required from Stellenbosch Town Planning and Stellenbosch Municipality, Abacus Development Company is waiting for the final approval to move forward with the development of The Square. The Square is home to many prominent Stellenbosch night clubs such as Terrace, Tin Roof and Catwalk which have been frequented by Stellenbosch University (SU) students for many years. Despite a petition called Save the Square, started by SU student, Daniel Schroder, it appears that Abacus will continue its plans to develop the Square. The petition garnered 4458 signatures. Bernabe de le Bat, Manager of Spatial Planning, Heritage & Environment at Stellenbosch Municipality, said, “As far as I know, Heritage Western Cape has approved and now it is up to Abacus if they wish to continue.” Petrus Erasmus, a SU Masters in Business Administration student and project manager for the Drostdy Square Development, says that they are waiting for approval of their departure application which allows them to change the current land rights from commercial to mixed rights. “We want to use the land for commercial, for apartments as well as hotel rights,” Erasmus said. The proposed plans hope to see fruition in the middle of 2021, with a new building being built where the clubs currently are, containing a hotel, office space as well as new restaurants. Gian Brink, the manager of Catwalk, a club facing closure, said, “I think everything depends on when the planning for the development will be finalised. Till then we should be able to trade. To relocate will be very difficult in terms of the cost, finding a new building and approval of liquor license. We need everyone's support in securing the future of Catwalk.”

Maaltye is egter
Alcohol still allowed at rugby BRYNLEY VAN AARDT
Stellenbosch University (SU) students have been confused as to what the recent ban of alcohol consumption in residences means for the future of Huisdans, Huisfondsdans and the sale of alcohol at Varsity Cup on Monday nights. Dr Choice Makhetha, Senior Director of Student Affairs said, “All events not held in the residences of the university, will not be affected by this ban, as much as we would still want to encourage students to use alcohol more responsibly and look out for one another to avoid risks which come with alcohol abuse.” The SU Student Representative Council (SRC), however, also had something to say about the alcohol ban in an email sent out to students last week, titled “Our issue
with the alcohol policy”. “As the highest and final representative of students at SU, the SRC was engaged on the issue of the alcohol ban in only one session on 15 January. At this session we were promised continued engagement before decisions were reached, a promise which has clearly been contravened,” the email stated. The SRC views this as a violation of the principles of cooperative governance and believes it has left the student body without a voice in a matter that directly concerns them. “It is for this reason that the SRC rejects the decision by SU management to temporarily ban the consumption of alcohol,” the email continues. Prof Arnold Schoonwinkel, SU Vice-Rector of Learning and Teaching, replied to the SRC’s

SWEET AND SIMPLE
CANADIAN TUXEDO
WHERE’S WALDO
THIS outfit has a 90s inspired feeling to it. A pair of blue mom jeans is paired with a colourful striped crop and classic white sneakers. This outfit is held together by a cute belt, a belt gives any outfit a focus point. The colour palette is playful yet tasteful, a trio of red, blue and white are the main colours. The entire outfit is tied together by a big grey book bag.
BLACK and white is a timeless ensemble. This simple outfit is constructed out of black jeans, a white t-shirt and black sneakers. Although basic and compiled using “everyday” clothing, it still has a striking impact. Such a simple ensemble really stands out with the help of a bright coloured accessory, in this case a bright red backpack. Sometimes basic helps you stand out.
A simple emerald blazer is paired with semi-formal pants. This elegant look is simplified by a striped cotton t-shirt. This outfit is elegant and for the modern-day preppy student, it maintains its practicality and comfortability by being paired with a subtle beige coloured pair of flats. An ensemble like this is easily made playful by adding accessories accordingly.
DENIM on denim outfits have been around for a while and why shouldn’t they be? It’s a classic. Denim is a fun material that will spark up any outfit, but it’s also a common material. To make it more unique, layer it with more denim. This outfit is constructed from a pair of denim jeans, a denim jacket and is tied together by matching the colour of the shoes to the black t-shirt.
STRIPED clothing seems to be a massive trend in 2020. This monochromatic outfit is spiced up with a black and white striped shirt. The rest of the outfit is another basic staple clothing outfit that consists of a black jeans, black converse, and a grey backpack. What could arguably be the most fun aspect of this ensemble is the colourful funky socks hidden away under all the layers.

Please don’t pet a peeve ZAHLÉ ELOFF
W
hen some students start their first year at Stellenbosch University (SU) they want to know the dos and don’ts to help them get through their studies smoothly. However, the don’ts in terms of what not to do to provoke lecturers might not occur to everyone. As humans we all tend to have some type of pet peeve, something that annoys us to no end. For some people hearing someone chew makes them want to burst a vein in their head. Others cannot stand when people mix up “your” and “you’re”. The question to consider here is: What are the consequences of students provoking lecturers’ pet peeves? The very people responsible for setting and marking our exams or granting extensions. Furthermore, what are some of the common pet peeves lecturers may have? Professor Johan Fourie from the Economics Department says that the use of cell phones during class remains the most frustrating pet peeve. While students tend to think that lecturers do not see them using their phones or some-
times simply don’t care, Fourie says they do, and it’s annoying. “Except if you urgently need medical advice or need to buy Tesla shares – although you’re already too late for that – your phone can wait till after class,” Fourie says. He adds that students never showing up to class is the most surprising to him. “I had a student a while ago who, at the end of the semester, asked me whether he could speak to the lecturer of the course. I was the lecturer, so he had clearly not been in a single class. When I informed him of the fact, I must admit some respect for the remarkable confidence the young man displayed in simply shrugging off the embarrassment and impolitely insisting on an extension of his essay deadline.” Despite students not showing up to class and the use of cell phones when they do, it would seem as though lecturers choose to separate their personal feelings from their professional ones. This is in terms of student behaviour influencing the leniency granted when setting an exam or marking a paper. “I separate student behaviour from the content of the course and
the way I grade. I miss grading an excellent essay or paper and not being able to see the name of the student, though,” Fourie says. Professor Sandra Swart from the History Department says she is slightly annoyed at the degrading alliance between lecturers and their students. “I will say that I wish students would trust us a little more. In the ‘60s there was an alliance between students and their professors – against the state and against the ‘suits’. But there has been a progressive loss of trust between lecturers and their students. This should not be the case. I want to remind students that for the most part – with some awkward exceptions – your professors were the smartest kids in the class and could have chosen any other job, but they chose to be here, with you. We care about our subjects; we care about our research but for the most part we do care very deeply about our students. I wish students realized this,” she says. “The other ‘pet peeve’ that follows like an angry little Schnauzer at my heels, is the dangerous call for people to ‘stay in the lane’. No! Don’t do that – live like you

THOSE who have been in Stellenbosch long enough might have known the space above De Akker as Hank’s Whiskey Bar. The Loft Events and Co. (better known as The Loft) is, however, the new kid on the block and you might want to get ready to have your shoes shaken off. It all started nine months ago when James Faure, a fourth year BEng (Industrial) student, and Seb Prentice, a fourth year BCom (Management Sciences) student, seized a rare opportunity. Both Faure and Prentice were employees at Hank’s Whiskey Bar, and when the company struck on hard financial times, they glimpsed a chance for something new to be born out of the ashes. Together with Mario Papadakis, they made a mutually beneficial deal with the bar’s owner. While previous management provides the spacious venue and bar, Faure, Prentice and Papadakis now provide the entertainment. Heavily influenced by the Cape Town clubbing scene, The Loft’s DJ will have you moving to a wide variety of genres. A typical night kicks off with some easy disco beats and, as the floor starts to fill up, transitions into techno and deep house. Themed nights are, however, the main focus. According to the owners, these help to achieve the aim of incorporating as many students as possible and to achieve a

The echo chamber stultifies you. Meet diverse people, fall in love with crazily unsuitable humans, read books recommended
by strangers. Friends should not be a mirror – they should be a window,” Swart added. Taking all the above information into consideration, it is evident that small adjustments to our otherwise typical class routines can really make a difference and make our courses far more enjoyable with the added benefit of having a happy lecturer.

The Loft Events and Co. ownership says that they take pride in and strive to diversify their events as much as possible. There is a certain risk involved in constantly mixing it up, which is why, Prentice argues, other places in town have been so successful. People seldom travel away from the norm they have set for themselves and stick to the same old same old. At The Loft they felt that there was a need for a more mature manner of clubbing in town for students between 20-24 years old. Faure says they plan to host more live events in the future to create a larger platform for local artists. Having attended one of their
events, I can say that the venue was always kept clean. No broken glass under my feet and no wet wipes needed for my shoes the next morning. Although The Loft is quite removed from the usual buzz, safety is not really something to be bothered about. There are always a lot of feet downstairs at De Akker and the owners encourage partygoers to Uber home. Doors are open every Wednesday and Friday night from 20:00 until late. tellenbosch is werklik ’n kunsliefhebber se paradys met ’n verskeidenheid galerye wat gereeld nuwe, opwindende uitstallings aanbied van beide ervare en nuwe kunstenaars. Só ’n uitstalling is Knoop.
Knot. “Daardie uitstalling het ’n diep impak op my gelaat. Ek sal so ver gaan as om dit as lewensveranderend te beskryf,” sê hy. Knoop.
Knot-uitstalling Foto: Verskaf staal as medium gekies het. Knoop.
Knoop.Knot is tot 21 Maart by die onderskeie galerye oop.

ALWAYS ‘HIGH’ You can catch Matt Carstens live in Stellenbosch this weekend. Photo: Supplied I’ve gotten on the singles released so far have been absolutely amazing and supportive.” His song “High” is currently playlisted on 5FM, which he says he never thought would happen. According to Carstens, everything related to his music has gotten “a bit clinical and less idealistic”, but he is excited to see what the fans think of the new direction he went in. Carstens believes, “Evolution of self is very necessary and should be pursued at all cost.” Together with a commended Australian band Germein, Matt
played 20 gigs at English universities over two weeks. Two of his original songs made the Top Five on the Coffee House Sessions Chart for 2018. His single “Somebody Else” was track of the week on Manchester Student Radio. Because of this, Matt is planning on doing many tours overseas. His new album titled Why Him is coming soon. He describes his new album as “a pretty solid and honest representation of where I’m at right now”. He said he had a blast making
it, and that’s all one could hope for. “It’s a lot bigger and edgier than most of the music I’ve released up until now,” he explained. He also has two upcoming gigs in Stellies. He is performing at The Mystic Boer on 12 February and Spier Wine Estate on 14 February. He says he is always amped to play in Stellenbosch, because “there’s always a very hyped and lekker vibe that comes with a Stellies show”. That being said, along with the rest of us, he is just hoping Loadshedding is cooperative.
Last-minute Valentine’s ideas ERIN WALLS
VALENTINE’S DAY for some may be a day that is filled with longing. Or, rather, spending time with their significant others. However, for many it is just another day to spend time with their friends. Whether you are single or not, Stellenbosch has plenty to offer everyone this Valentine’s Day. The infamous Simonsberg Met is happening for its 58th year, where heels will be digging into the ground and broomsticks will be going in circles. If dressing up and placing bets on shirtless first years is not your style, “Ponies and Cronies,” the digs party, will be occurring as well. Slops are welcome, and the red bull

tellenbosch favourite, Matt Carstens, is a pop singer-songwriter, coming into his own on the music scene, both locally and internationally. Matt skilfully delivers a lively and versatile performance of original arrangements and well-known covers, equipped with just his acoustic guitar and loop pedal. He says he always finds it funny when people ask for a come up story, because there’s never a time in a musician’s career where he isn’t trying to reach the next level. He also still describes himself as an “up-and-comer” in the music scene. Matt grew up on game farms in Limpopo and stayed in Vaalwater until age 17 when he found a manager and moved to the Western Cape. He has been playing in pubs and resorts since he was 13, so he says “moving down here where the scene is so alive was quite the culture shock.” After he finished matric, he spent a year studying BA Language and Culture in Stellenbosch and working on his debut album, “2D Heart” in 2017 before he decided to become a full-time musician. The album received excellent reviews. Since then Matt has shared the stage with some of our country’s biggest names, including Majozi, Spoegwolf, Die Heuwels Fantasties and Francois van Coke. Carstens said, “The reaction

The event starts at 18:00 and tickets are selling for R120 per person on Quicket, with a VIP option, where you can meet and mingle with Parow and his band, also being available. The Investec Cape Town Art Fair is back for it’s eighth year at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. It runs from 14 to 16 February, showcasing some of the worlds finest contemporary art. Tickets are currently being sold for R160 online, whilst it will be R190 at the door. If you feel like being active,
Devonvale Golf and Wine Estate is hosting a 5 km evening fun run, with live entertainment, food stalls, cocktail, wine and beer bars waiting for you at the end. Tickets are R100 per person beforehand and R160 on the day. If you are really willing to splurge on your date this Valentine’s day, Spier will be hosting a sunset picnic, with guitarist Matt Carsten serenading many. It makes for a perfect romantic setting for you and your partner. Boschendal is hosting its well-known night market, which has free entrance. You can walk around their large vegetable and flower garden, whilst sipping on one of the plenty of drinks that will be on sale. With vegan pizza on offer as well
as amazing burgers, you will not be disappointed with this night out. The Galileo Open Air Cinema is the perfect place to take your crush, or a bunch of friends for an evening doing something different. On the 14th of February, Nooitgedacht will be airing “About Time,” with a complimentary drink and chocolate. Of course, many bars across town will be offering drink and food specials. If a casual night out over a few beers is how you want to spend your Valentine’s day, single or not, there are plenty of options. So, there is no need to flee Stellies this Valentine’s Day.

Daar was verskeie redes vir hul bedanking.

Valentine’s Day, A Money-Making Scheme
LOLITA DE ABREU
W
* Lolita De Abreu: Second year BA Language and Culture student.
hen one thinks of Valentine’s Day, more often than not, what comes to mind is one’s partner, red roses, chocolates and maybe even one’s closest friends. Love is not the only thing in the air when it comes to Valentine’s Day. For the commercial sector, I get the feeling that all they can smell in the air is money! So is 14 February a day of love, or is it just another money-making scheme disguised as a chubby baby with wings and a bow and arrow? If you break it down, Valentine’s Day is just a regular day with a price tag slapped onto it. If you are waiting for 14 February to roll around to actively show love towards your partners, then your idea of love is slightly missing the mark. As cliché as it sounds, being
in a relationship with someone should mean loving them every day. Not just one day of the year. The true meaning of love seems to get lost in the Valentine’s Day hysteria every year. It becomes less about the traditional view on love and more about a newfound materialistic view. According to BusinessReport, trends reveal a 35% increase in purchases of cosmetic gifts and flowers from FNB Credit Cardholders during this time of the year. It seems as though the famous saying “the way to one’s heart is through the stomach” proves true for South Africans, as restaurant visits see a 30% increase on Valentine’s Day. A report like this excludes credit card trends from other banks as well as cash purchases. So to think
about the amount of money that is really being spent on one “holiday” is quite astonishing. It is also reported that during the week leading up to Valentine’s Day, florists see their biggest increase in sales of the year, which can be as high as over 200%. So what does spending all this money on your partners have to do with how Valentine’s Day originated? The answer is nothing. The origins surrounding Valentine’s Day seem to be unconfirmed. However, it remains consistent that it blossomed in the 14th century, during an annual festival, where men and women would be coupled off through a lottery. Other legends reveal that the day is named after St. Valentine who married off men and women in secret, to pardon husbands from
the war. After thinking long and hard about this particular day, I have concluded that Valentine’s Day is no different to the personal celebration of an anniversary with one’s partner, and has, therefore, become another burden to the already strained student budget. Don’t get me wrong. I have nothing against Valentine’s Day. I love any excuse to celebrate. However, if you ask me whether or not I think it is a money-making scheme, my answer would be yes. Everyone expresses love in different ways, be it through gifts or something more sentimental. However, I do believe everyone can benefit from steering the holiday further away from the greedy hands of the commercial sector and closer towards a more sentimental approach.
Bestaan rape culture nou regtig?
ALETTA SIMPSON
Ek praat namens myself. Ons was 15 meisies op pad na ’n manskoshuis vir ’n kuier toe daar ’n man langs die pad gil: “Hey girls! I’ll make your pussies wet!”
Rape culture, volgens my,
“Meisie, jy lyk mos nou lekker.” “Blommetjie, hoe lyk dit met jou.” “Hello, girl.”

Maties Tafeltennis is tweebenig.
Tafeltennis is wel meer as net pingpong speel by kuiers.
The Maroon machine is in good hands ALEXANDER BRAND
MATIES hit the ground running in their 2020 FNB Varsity Cup campaign with a thorough 67-16 thrashing of Shimlas in the first round. There is no “I” in the word “team”, and whilst the whole of the Maroon Machine acquitted itself beautifully, a big team is nothing without a big captain. For the men in maroon Ben-Jason Dixon is that captain, and there will be no better opportunity to get to know him than now. Dixon attended Paul Roos Gymnasium where he matricu-
lated in 2016. He served as the school’s head boy in the same year. After school he joined the Western Province Rugby Institute, where he, without a doubt, developed his signature brand of rugby. When the opportunity to study at Stellenbosch University came knocking, he heeded the call and enrolled as a student in 2018. He is currently in his third year of studying Industrial Engineering. He started his varsity rugby career in 2018 with the Young Guns (Maties u.20) where he helped his team to become the first Maties team ever to win the Under 20
tournament of the Varsity Cup series. Dipping his toes into what was to come, Dixon also joined the Maties first team for their preseason and accompanied the team to USSA Rugby. His quality was indisputable and in the same year he represented the Baby Boks at the World Rugby U20 Championship, whilst playing club games for Western Province. In 2019 he made the bench for the Maties first team and was called to the frontlines in three games that season. A starting spot
in the 2020 first team seemed the logical next step, but there was more in store for the 198cm lock. It was only this year that Dixon would realise the magnitude of his responsibilities when he was handed the 2020 captaincy at the team training camp in George. Although he knew that he had been nominated, Dixon says that being crowned captain still came as a surprise. “I didn’t really expect to be chosen as captain, but I am very excited to lead the guys this season,” he said. He’ll have to be a man with a plan to lead Maties, but it seems
like he already has his goals laid out. “Firstly, we want to inspire Stellenbosch and the broader South Africa by the way we play, which is playing without fear,” he says. Another key element is to “enjoy playing together and just enjoy each other on and off the field.” The Maties boys seem to be in good hands. They will certainly need their wits about them when they face Central University of Technology (CUT) in the third round of the FNB Varsity Cup on 17 February at 19:00. It looks set to entertain. Don’t miss it.

AmaMaties crowned kings at cluster cup BRYNLEY VAN AARDT
T
here might not be many fierce rivalries between the various Stellenbosch University (SU) clusters, but their meeting at the annual Maties Newcomer Athletics somewhat awakens the competitive spirit. After a day of running, skipping and jumping, AmaMaties walked away victorious at Last Thursday’s Newcomer Athletics, leaving the other clusters groveling in the Coetzenburg Stadium dust. Newcomers from all seven SU clusters took part in events that included sprints, hurdles, long distance and relays, with two to three newcomers representing each cluster in the respective events. At the end of the evening, House Committee members from various residences also took part in relays against each other with the newcomers cheering them on. towards the end. But the gees was always there so it was a really nice experience. Everyone tried to compete even
though we are not the best, which was really great,” Tredoux said. The night ended with Rubix in third place, VicMeyr in second
place and AmaMaties taking first place overall. Sejal Debideen, one of the VicMeyr cluster conveners said, “I'm very proud of VicMeyr being placed 2nd overall in the Maties newcomer athletics. We like to encourage our cluster to participate in these events as it creates a sense of community and an environment where the people of VicMeyr, who share a passion for something, in this case athletics, can meet people within their immediate community and bond over this shared experience.” Maryam Adams, one of the AmaMaties cluster conveners said, “It is beautiful to see the positive energy within the Cluster. During welcoming a strong bond was formed amongst the newcomers and last night you could see that in the way in which everyone encouraged each other. Allison (also a convener) and I, were very impressed by the participation and support. Winning is just the cherry on the top.”
