A century of celebrating societies at SU

A

hundred years has passed for Stellenbosch University (SU).

For many of these, student societies have been around to witness the growth and change of theof which university they form a part. Some have withstood the test of time and establish themselves as immovable forces on the SU campus. Others fell as quickly as they rose. For decades, student societies have been bringing likeminded individuals together and have offered some of the most interesting and diverse activities for miles around.

SU’s oldest society, the BTK, deserves an honourable mention.

Established in 1928, this year is their

90th anniversary, making them the oldest society on campus. The BTK provides an escape from the rush of campus life, with daylong hikes and various longer tours being only a small part of their expansive repertoire.

When the club first started out they did mostly hikes, but as the years went by their activities expanded to canoeing, abseiling, or whatever activity was in demand at that specific time. There were even four people that went to parachute. “The BTK will strive to exist for as long as the university exists. They will grow old together,” said Fritz Buhrmann, a management member, with confidence in his voice.

Their slogan, ‘Stap nou, werk later!’, is one that has certainly, through the

years, rung true.

Some societies have not been around for quite that long. Adam Tas is a society that was established in 2007 in collaboration with the writer and poet, Breyten Breytenbach, who is renowned for his opposition against apartheid. This society aims to change the perception that the Afrikaans language is dying. It also creates an inclusive space for Stellenbosch students not just to speak Afrikaans in class, but also to use it outside the class and celebrate it culturally.

Other societies are simply different from the rest. Promoting Animal Welfare (PAW) is a society that was established in 2008. PAW is a non-profit organisation that relies on members

for funding and donates membership fees to organisations working for the protection of animals. Throughout the year PAW adopts animals which stay at Eagle Encounters, the rehabilitation centre where they are taken care of.. Initially PAW worked solely in collaboration with the Animal Welfare Society Stellenbosch (AWSS), but later the society reached out to other organisations such as Farm Sanctuary SA, Eagle Encounters, Drakenstein Lion Park, Cart Horse Protection Association and the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB). PAW educates students by taking them to these different organisations.

of PAW feels that due to the changing world, as well as climate change, there is a greater need to make people aware of other animals such as dolphins and whales, and the treatment of these types of animals in aquariums, as well as the culling of dolphins. PAW is there to help animals that needs their help.

“Although we only make a small difference in Stellenbosch, or a small difference in Cape Town, it makes a big difference in the specific area, and that’s what makes it so special” says Gerber. American visitors at SU’s equality unit DESLENE PRINS

The Stellenbosch University (SU) Equality Unit hosted two guests from New York University’s Office of Global Inclusion, Diversity and Strategic Innovation: Dr. Lisa Coleman, the Senior Vice President, and Monroe France, the Associate vice president.

The goal of this meeting was a strategic networking opportunity to help further the university’s aim to promote internationalism. “New York University is ranked as one of the top universities internationally and they have multiple campuses globally, so we were quite interested in seeing how they systemically managed issues of equality and discrimination,” said Jaco Greeff Brink, Head of the Equality Unit. The Unit as it stands currently is quite young, with their third birthday being on 1 December.

The Unit is therefore open to ‘benchmarking’ or learning from as many sources and institutions as possible. Besides working with New York University, the unit has also benchmarked with Oxford University, Derby University, the University of Zambia and several of our ‘sister’ universities in South Africa.

This is so that members of Stellenbosch University can log official or unofficial complaints whether it pertains to gender-based violence, LGBTQIA+ and HIV discrimination or harassment of any sort. They are equally excited to announce she launch of their new website, Thetha, which they hope will launch early next year.

Thetha will be a webpage where people will be able to log any complaints they may have online within the comfort and safety of their own space.

According to Greeff Brink, the Unit started out as the Institutional HIV Office. The Institutional HIV Office’s main aim was to look at the university’s HIV policy and at what was required for a comprehensive

EQUALITY UNIT welcomes international visitors. institutional HIV response.

It included work involving gender, sexuality, LGBTQIA+ support, and HIV testing and prevention.

Then, three years ago, the decision was made to restructure and reform the Institutional HIV Office into the Equality Unit. The Institutional HIV Office expanded from their HIV and sexuality portfolios to include a portfolio on unfair discrimination, sexual harassment and victimization, giving us the Equality Unit as we know it today.

Practically, the Equality Unit has

an unfair discrimination, harassment and sexual harassment portfolio; an HIV and sexualities portfolio; and a gender non-violence portfolio.

Officially and unofficially, the Unit provides mediation in these areas.

The Unit also looks at possible alternative dispute resolutions to find ways to move forward without formal disciplinary processes, depending on what the client requests.

The HIV and sexualities portfolio aids in condom distribution, HIV testing opportunities, and providing support to LGBTQIA+ students.

553 students. These were the humble beginnings of Stellenbosch University. Now the number of students is nearly ten times that number with 5076 students in just the faculty of science alone.This faculty had equally humble beginnings – as Wilda Fourie-Basson states, the entirety of the natural sciences laboratory could be housed in two small cupboards.

It now has 170 laboratories and 13 academic buildings.

The newly renovated first year chemistry building is one of many items on the list to show just how much the science faculty is continuing to grow, this seen in its two state of the art lecture theatres and numerous modern laboratories.

The growth of the science faculty can not only be found in its facilities, but also in its achievements and its resources and the number (and gender) of staff members.

The original chemistry building, De Beers, used to have three-bathroom facilities – seen in the 100+ History of the Chemistry Department, two bathrooms were dedicated to students and one for lectures as, at the time of the building’s start, the lecturers were solely male.

Now not only are ten of the 24 chemistry lecturers female, but the science faculty has also boasted its highly acclaimed female dean, Professor Louise Warnich, and many female award winners, the most recent including three award winners of the South African Women in Science Awards. This faculty continues to strive for excellence past the 100year mark because it is one of the oldest on campus, dating back to the Victoria College days and making the faculty older than the 100 years that the University is celebrating.

It is paving the way for another 100 successful years.

Inetkey leaves students wondering about where their money goes ZOË HUMAN

Maties Wi-Fi and its accompanying Inetkey seems to be getting the students of Stellenbosch University (SU) all worked up. Maties Wi-Fi and Inetkey acts as a staple for many Stellenbosch students, especially those staying in university residences.

Students can load money easily and efficiently and thereby gain access to the SU Wi-Fi network. Some students, however, claim that irregularities are arising in the amounts of money that they pay for access to the internet.

Savannah Snow, education student and Metanoia Residence house committee member, spoke of her three-year long experience with Inetkey: “In first year, I think I used R200 on Inetkey the whole year. I was on Facebook and Instagram and watching movies. This year I think I’ve used R800 Inetkey. My Inetkey is not even open and I’ve used Inetkey.”

When asked if she has ever thought about taking up a complaint regarding the irregularities in funds, Snow had this to say: “No, because I don’t think anything is going to happen. It costs money to log a complaint. It costs R120 to tell IT Hub your Inetkey has gone and if they find that you are wrong it costs double.”According to Yanga Tshelane,

a second-year international student commented: “It keeps getting more and more expensive. Stellenbosch is literally one of the only South African universities that charge its students for Wi-Fi. [sic] If we are paying over R30 000, R40 000 or R50 000 per year for our student fees they can at least give us that R1200 internet for free – why

must we pay it as an additive?”

University of Cape Town (UCT) third year, mechanical engineering student, Jessi Masters shares Marais’s sentiments:“I don’t understand how a university can charge for Wi-Fi. What happens if you are on a bursary or the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS)?” Masters said.

Azraa Conrad, a bursary student and Metanoia House Committee member said: “Inetkey is a waste of time. I have used R1200 in the first semester. It is tough out here. I can’t even do assignments. Why do we not get Eduroam?” Imogen Clinton, a final year drama student further raises a question regarding Inetkey: “If they’re constantly increasing the price of it, the least they can do is increase the limit of our quota.”

Clinton goes on to compare SU with Varsity College, where students are given a monthly capped internet and after having reached the limit are charged for the excess.

When speaking with Tariq Khan, SRC communications officer, on the role of the SRC in working towards making Inetkey less of a financial burden on students he was unwilling to comment.

On Wednesday, 17 October, the SRC held their general meeting at Metanoia Residence. They discussed the Inetkey policy regarding the allocation of Inetkey to members of the SRC. A R50 per month proposal was voted in.

This would apply to all members excluding the communications officer and marketing manager.

This allocation is half the amount previously allocated to members of the SRC.

ctober is Mental Health Awareness Month in South Africa. Stellenbosch University (SU) marked World Mental Health Day on 10 October with a series of programmes, events and talks on campus and radio.

The Listen Learn and Live (LLL) community also hosted a Mental Health Awareness Week from 8-11 October in collaboration with the Centre for Student Counselling and Development (CSCD) from Student Affairs. The theme for this year’s World Mental Health Day was ‘Young People and Mental Health in a Changing World’.

According to Dr Jason Bantjes, a senior lecturer in the Department of Psychology at SU, the selection of this theme points to how serious an issue mental health in young people is.

Data provided by SU’s Corporate Communication Division shows that between 10% and 20% of young people worldwide have mental health problems, and 20,3% of university students worldwide experience a mental disorder.

Dr Birgit Schreiber, Senior Director at the Division for Student Affairs (DSAf) at SU, said that there are many reasons as to why an

increase in mental health discourse is seen not only in youth and universities, but globally. Some of the reasons Schreiber highlighted include societal factors such as violence and an impoverished public health care sector –

mental health is more visible as the stigma around mental health is reducing and more youth come forward.

Schreiber also stated that there is an increase in the display of distress due to online and social media as well as the demands exerted on students by the “always on” lifestyle.

Family and culture also impact their mental wellbeing.

Schreiber also stressed that wellness is a systemic issue, and that it requires not only the effort of professionals, but the SU community at

large. Especially students and families need to think about their lifestyle choices that contribute towards overall stresses. “Mental health is an individual and societal issue, and while universities care and support where possible, the responsibility is more personal and more societal than the question implies.

The CSCD is doing an immense amount around this theme, as is the Student Representative Council (SRC), student leadership, the residences and PSOs” said Schreiber.

DSAf is also engaging with the rectorate and the SRC to work towards shifting student culture at SU towards a healthier one. SU has initiated a Mental Health Task Team to identify principles that can guide our campus in terms of our

conceptualisation around mental health, the role and responsibility of students and staff and our care provisions. The notion that collective engagement is needed was also shared by Kaylon Weppelman, an Honours student in the Psychology Department, who initiated the LLL awareness week.

Weppelman said the events drew students from within the LLL community but also those who live in residences or privately.

“Events such as the awareness week and the Mental Health day organised by the SRC do help, and they fit into the larger discourse at SU as mental health impacts us all” said Weppelman.

116 years of growing the Botanical Gardens CARLA VISAGIE

or the Stellenbosch University (SU) Botanical Garden, 2018 held many memorable moments.

These include its accreditation by the Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI) in June, and another Accredited Conservation Practitioner in August.

Another significant highlight was the recent appointment of Dr Donovan Kirkwood as the new curator of the gardens.

Amongst other things, Kirkwood has previously served as an Ecological Planner at Cape Nature and looks set to take the Botanical Garden to even greater heights: “I certainly want to continue the legacy of conservation growing projects and partnerships, but I also would like to make learning about the tremendous botanical diversity of South Africa, and particularly the Western Cape, exciting, visually appealing, and personal,” Kirkwood said.

He further said that he aims to educate people about the various threatened plant species in South Africa. “Most of all, I just want to get people to fall hopelessly in love with plants and nature,” Kirkwood added.

Kirkwood believes the Botanical Garden’s successful existence for so many years can be ascribed to various factors like

A Standing Ovation for Beethoven 9 LAUREN WESLEY-SMITH & RENÉ ESTERHUYSE

In a massive musical collaboration at Stellenbosch University, musicians from all throughout Stellenbosch united to perform Ludwig van Beethoven’s epic Ninth Symphony in the Endler Hall. Joined together onstage were the University of Stellenbosch Symphony Orchestra (USSO), Schola Cantorum, Canticum Novum, students from the Singing Division of the Music Department, and various Stellenbosch alumni – all under the baton of Professor Corvin Matei.

This performance was not only part of the Centenary celebrations, but also marked Matei’s final concert before his retirement at the end of the year.

Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony was first performed in 1824 when Beethoven was already completely deaf.

The enlargement

of the orchestra and the inclusion of vocalists in the fourth movement are some of its biggest innovations. The fourth movement, based on Friedrich Schiller’s “Ode to Joy”, has become one of the world’s most famous melodies.

Matei, the resident flute lecturer of Stellenbosch University, and conductor of USSO, was optimistic about the concert.

“The Symphony no.9 represented a milestone in Beethoven’s life, and in the history of music. I am very proud our performance coincides with the Stellenbosch University’s 100th anniversary – it will be an electrifying performance. In years to come it will be remembered as a milestone in the history of the Music Department and the university.” He adds, “Schiller’s words are more contemporary than ever, and prophetic ‘Embrace yourselves, you millions’”. Du ToitPearce says that she is proud of all the musicians. “It is really taxing work,

and I think the orchestra did extremely well. I’m of course very proud of our undergraduate singing students who participated in the choir – it is a big sing for them. It was also wonderful to sing alongside my colleague, Lauren, and to have some of our colleagues on stage with us.” Dr Pieter Grobler, head of the Music Department, describes this symphony as “one of the most outstanding works” of classical music, and says that it was a very fitting way to conclude Matei’s career.

“It also brought the Centenary celebrations to a wonderful climax,” says Grobler. Christian Brand, a fourth year music student and concertmaster for the orchestra, also expressed his enthusiasm about the concert in the lead up to the performance: “It’s my last year here, and my last concert here in USSO, and so I am very excited. I think we are making good progress.”

Brand also expressed his regret that only one performance was scheduled, as tickets were completely sold out days before the concert.

The SU Botanical Garden is the oldest university botanical garden in South Africa.

It’s founder, Augusta Vera Duthie, started it in 1902.

At first plants were planted next to the Old Main Building, but initially these were only used for research purposes and practical assessments for students.

The Botanical Garden was moved to its current location on the corner of Neethling and Van Riebeek Street in 1922, and in 1925 Dr Hans Herre was appointed as its first curator. The SU Botanical Garden boasts its own shop and the Katjiepiering restaurant.

The store sells plants and various other plant-related products, and visitors can enjoy something to eat or drink in the age-old Katjiepiering restaurant.According to Marga Rai, the manager of the Botanical Garden shop, the restaurant and the shop came long after the Garden was founded: “The shop was previously a storeroom, and the restaurant used to be a space where radio recordings were made,” Rai said. Further, “It is a privilege to work in such a beautiful area, and another interesting part about managing the shop is the diversity of people I meet.”

Who reads student feedback?

S

tudent feedback is a part of every lecture series or module at Stellenbosch University (SU).

It enables students to evaluate their lecturers through the filling in of forms or the completion of questionnaires.

The Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) is responsible for the distribution, processing and storage of the data, and have different faculty advisors that report to each faculty.

Some of the aims of student feedback is to address aspects of the lecturer or course – like module difficulty and the effectiveness of lecturers. This serves to empower lecturers to improve their own teaching. It also works to enhance the experience of students’ learning, and contributes to the monitoring and reviewing of quality and standards.

According to Dr Melanie Skead, director of the CTL, student feedback itself cannot develop learning practices, but rather influences how these practices are implemented: “It is the use of the information by the lecturer (or whoever gathered the data) for enhancing learning and teaching practices that makes the difference. The purpose of the feedback process is critical, as is the use of the information and the attitude (and purpose) with which students provide the feedback,” Skead said.

She added that student feedback is a process of “action research” that aims to continuously improve and enhance teaching and learning at SU. Further, Skead said that “all relevant information is valuable, but the most useful feedback is often that which highlights areas for improvement for all concerned”. Even if the feedback “appears ‘negative’, it is useful, often more so than feedback that focuses only on what is ‘working’ well (by way of example)”.

Dr Melanie Petersen, a researcher who did her PhD on the role of student feedback in university teaching practices at a SU, found that reflection can help lecturers to identify aspects of their practice that are effective as well as areas that present room for growth.

“One example of how particularly negative student feedback was used to innovate a new approach to teaching, is that of a lecturer within the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences.

He used his own experience to start a support programme in his department where new lecturers are supported to collect, interpret and respond to student feedback in constructive ways,” Petersen said.

Alex van Greuning, a previous class representative in the Law Faculty, and SRC vice chair, said that student interaction is very valuable, and lecturers implement it effectively, and class representatives are an important link between the lecturer and students.

“As class representative, I liked to see how lecturers implemented the suggestions the class gave them and how they really considered the suggestions to improve their teaching,” Van Greuning said.

Alexander Triantafillou, a Swedish exchange student doing courses in Humanities at SU, orientated the value of the student feedback system from a global perspective.

“I haven’t seen that the University applying student feedback as much

and this is also something I saw in Sweden. I think as the professors get older they are set in their ways. I don’t think it’s easy for older people to consider positive criticism because they already have so much experience.

I’ve experienced, however, that younger professors are more open to criticism.”

Marissa Badenhorst, a first year BA Language and Culture student, said that students’ opinions are of endless value:“Students’ opinions are definitely being voiced, captured and taken into consideration through course and lecturer forms. I think the few minute’s students use to fill in the forms can result in valuable input that doesn’t go to waste.”

“The optimist in me believes that lecturers wouldn’t put themselves in the position of being evaluated if they weren’t open to criticism.

I think lecturers do implement the feedback, because it enables them to do their jobs with more efficiency and confidence,” Badenhorst said.

Nasionale Voedingsweek (9– 15 Oktober) en Nasionale Vetsug week (15–19 Oktober) fokus op die belangrikheid daarvan om gesonder en gereelde etes in te neem om vetsug en gesondheidsgevare wat daarmee gepaard gaan, te voorkom; en ook om algemene gesondheid te bevorder.

Vanjaar se Nasionale Voedingsweek en Nasionale Vetsugweek is gevestig op drie doelwitte: om die gesondheidsvoordele van ontbyt te beklemtoon; om verbruikers aan te moedig om ten spyte van tyden begrotingbeperkings gesonde ontbytkeuses te maak; en om inligting te versprei oor hoe om ’n gesonde

ontbyt te beplan en voor te berei.

Labuschagne het gesê dat diegene wat ontbyt oorslaan meer geneig is daartoe om ongesonde kos gedurende die dag in te neem, of om te ooreet.

Sy het verder vertel dat die oorslaan van ontbyt met fisiese inaktiwiteit en hoër liggaamsmassaindekse geassosieer word.

Ontbyt kan ook verstandelike voordele inhou.

Labuschagne beveel studente dus

sterk aan om meer aandag aan ontbyt te gee.

Ontbyt verwys na die eerste ete van die dag wat die vas na ’n lang tydperk van slaap breek, en behoort binne twee tot drie uur nadat jy wakker geword het, ingeneem te word.

Verder het Labuschagne gesê dat ontbyt nie alles op een slag ingeneem hoef te word nie, maar versprei kan word oor die drie uur.

Labuschagne waarsku teen geprosesseerde styselkosse, en stel eerder ’n ontbyt wat vesel, lae vet melk en vrugte insluit, voor.

In Suid-Afrika is die bevordering van gesondheid egter ’n uitdaging.

Die 2016 SuidAfrikaanse Demografieseen Gesondheidsopname het byvoorbeeld gevind dat 68% vroue en 31% mans in Suid-Afrika oorgewig is.

“Die aanmoediging van ontbyt is baie belangrik in Suid-Afrika om beide ondervoeding onder kinders, en oorgewig volwassenes aan te spreek.

“Elke moontlike geleentheid moet gebruik word om kinders en jongmense se diëte en eetgewoontes te verbeter” het Labuschagne verder verduidelik.

Die #Move4Food-veldtog wat op 20 Augustus 2018 geloods is, beoog om R10 miljoen in skenkings binne 100 dae in te samel om die voedselsekerheidsinisiatiewe by die Universiteit Stellenbosch (US) in die volgende drie jaar te steun.

Die doel is om behoeftige studente te ondersteun wanneer hulle beursfondse vir kos teen die einde van die jaar uitgeput is.

Die gevolge hiervan is dikwels slegte uitslae van studente tydens die eindeksamen en selfs die staak van graadprogramme.

Volgens Cheryl Benadie, Bestuurder van Skenkerbetrekkinge, sorg die veldtog vir groter solidariteit en ondersteuning binne die universiteitsgemeenskap.

Prof. Wim de Villiers, US rektor en visekanselier, het sy ondersteuning vir die veldtog gewys deur die volle

Sanlam Kaapstad Maraton af te lê. De Villiers het al bykans R128 000 ingesamel en is een van 110 personeellede en alumni wat geld vir die veldtog insamel. Alumnus Folkers Tullki-Williams wat tans in Helsinki woon, het ʼn 375 km lange staptog deur Estland afgelê om R10 000 vir die #Move4Food-veldtog in te samel.

Hy het sodoende die eerste Suid-Afrikaner geword wat hierdie staptog voltooi het.

Die veldtog het al die een miljoenrandmerk bereik, maar Karen Bruns, Senior Direkteur van Ontwikkeling en Alumnibetrekkinge, moedig verdere alumni in Asië, Europa, Groot Britanje en Amerika aan om ook betrokke te raak by die veldtog.

Die veldtog sluit 27 November, op Internasionale Skenkingsdag af.

World democracy under threat Professor Ursula van Beek, founder of the Transformational Research Unit at the Political Science Department of Stellenbosch University coauthored a book titled Democracy under threat: A crisis of legitimacy. The book highlights the changing nature of democracy in the current political society.

It pays attention to key issues such as the role of globalisation on the noticeable interdependency world democracies have on the socioeconomic status if one another. Moreover, the vital influence of populist groups on democratic outcomes, and whether their influence is one that is juxtaposed with the key embodiments of democracy, was also discussed in the book. When asked whether she thought South Africa’s democracy is under threat, Van Beek replied by stating that “prior to recent political events that lead to Cyril Ramaphosa being elected as President of the Republic of South Africa, South Africa’s democracy was indeed under threat.

Jacob Zuma’s presidential term had been ineffective in carrying out the true embodiments of what South African citizens thought to be democracy”. Van Beek said that democracy defined in the context of South African citizens was an entity that “advocated for a betterment in standards of living. By failing to meet this definition, Zuma’s term allowed for the undermining of confidence in democracy by citizens.” Lynn Rippenaar-Moses, a Marketing Officer at SU, conducted an interview with van Beek. Part of the discussion was the extent to which social media affected democratic procedures.

At SU the effect of social media networks on students that engage on these social media platforms is noticeable as it has formed part of the global and local culture within which students reside. The lobbying of votes for various campus committee elections usually spill over to social media networks, and as a result they influence the voting procedures.

SU thinks 100 years ahead The Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study (STIAS) played host to the first ever Postdoctoral Conference in the southern hemisphere.

Organised by the Postdoctoral Society Stellenbosch (PDS), the theme of the Postdoctoral Conference, was ‘100 years into the future’. It celebrated the success of research at Stellenbosch University (SU) over the past 100 years. The conference had a diverse program with a variety of discussions and workshops presented from 3 to 5 October. Part of these proceedings were oral sessions regarding, amongst others, “African History and Society” and “Technology, Biology and Agriculture”.

Workshops on Food Security and Climate Smart Agriculture were also presented. Chairperson of PDS, Dr Natasha Mothapo, said that “there has never been anything like this [Postdoctoral Conference] in the Southern Hemisphere.”

“The University is turning 100, and the goal of this conference was to gather the young minds in

Southern Africa and deliberate issues that are affecting Africa.”

Mothapo added that, because SU is turning 100, another central theme of the conference was the setting of goals for 100 years into the future.

She said that it is vital that research take on “an interdisciplinary approach”, and consequently the research presented at the conference had “a focus on issues and challenges in Africa.”About the goals of PDS, Mothapo said: “We [PDS] are not students and not staff, so are in a grey area. The aim of the society, then, is to work on policies that better communication between administration and the postdoc students, and this has been the goal of the society for the past three years.”Mothapo, a student of the Botany and Zoology Department from her undergrad to her postdoctoral research, has been at SU since 2001. Dr Mothapo has dedicated her research to invasive ant species and their impact on the broader environment.

et’s face it – exams have snuck up on most of us.

One moment we were living our best silly-season lives, and the next we were moving into the bib and using up our entire COB quota on coffee.

One thing is true for everyone though, and that is that exam dates won’t change. It’s time to knuckle down and get through it one last time before a well-deserved holiday.

Studying hard is obviously of utmost importance during the upcoming weeks. However, looking after yourself and your mental health will ensure that you go into those exams and really do your best.

It’s also very easy to burn-out during exam time if you don’t take your health seriously.

It sounds clichéd, but a happy body and mind are the keys to success, let’s not let our lifestyles fall apart during exams.

Let’s get through this with these handy tips:

STRESS FREE EXAM calming tips before the November exams hit SU students.

Curb the coffee Don’t freak out, but drinking excessive amounts of coffee during exam time isn’t a good idea.

We drink coffee as a pick me up, and so naturally having several pickme-ups in quick succession isn’t good for you. The caffeine in coffee does give that little boost, but too much of it just increases your heart rate and can make it even harder to focus. Try to set yourself a limit on how many cups of coffee you drink a day and plan them for the beginning or middle of your study session so as to optimise on that caffeine rush.

Sleep is so important!

There is a very dangerous culture on campus that seems to celebrate pulling all-nighters before big tests or exams – this is a problem.

Being well-rested is important if you want to have a productive day and a successful exam.

The easiest way to do this is by trying to routinize your sleeping pattern as much as possible.

We all go a bit haywire during the year but exams really are a good chance to work out a sleeping routine and stick to it – you’ll thank me later.

For most people, the average time they can focus is from 45 minutes to an hour and then it becomes harder for their brains to retain information effectively.

Inserting 10 to 15 minute breaks between your hours of studying will make the time you do spend studying more effective and focused.

Find your friends Everyone’s doing their own thing during exams. We’re all trying to pass and go home as soon as possible and that can often become an isolating experience. Stressful times are when you need your friends the most, so make sure you check-in and find out

how they’re doing.

Take your study breaks together and challenge yourselves to talk about anything but exams just to have a break and relax for a moment.

It’s a small thing, but it’ll make a world of difference.

Exams are a time of heightened stress levels, but they are manageable if you actively look after yourself during the upcoming weeks.

Stay hydrated (on water as well as coffee).

Especially in the Stellenbosch heat. Water is vital for a sound mind.

Get enough sleep and plan your time well to pass through the coming weeks as painlessly as possible.

her partner left her.

Becoming a born-again Christian in 2007 is what turned September’s life around.

Her friend made it his New Year’s resolution to take her to church with him.

“I only went because he said he would buy me two beers when we got back,” September laughed.

However, when she came out of the church she “couldn’t drink anymore”.

Inspired by her newfound faith, September registered to complete her matric. She received her National Seniors Certificate in 2010 and then completed a course in Theology at CFC Bible College in 2012.

Riding the wave of accomplishment, September was reminded of the dream she had in grade six to become a social worker.

She applied to study at SU, but was unsuccessful in both 2013 and 2014.

September, however, was determined to study here specifically.

“I didn’t apply anywhere else,” she said.

“I felt at home when I came here.”

In 2015 she was accepted to start her first year in Social Work at SU. September admitted that coming here to study with people who are her children’s age was challenging at first.

“Some people would look at me with a ‘what are you doing here’ attitude” she said. Since then, however, September has become a ‘mother figure’ to many of the students who frequent the BA building.

“Many people in the faculty call me their mother .

I feel that that is one of the things I am here for,” September said.

Despite being a full-time student, mother and grandmother, September is also involved in her Nomzamo community.

She started her own nongovernment organization (NGO) last year called “Z’thande”.

This organization aims to instil the idea of self-love among the women of her community, who are often victims of abuse.

“We [Z’thande] want to teach them that irrespective of what is going on they must be able to say ‘I am a queen. There is something bigger inside of me’,” said September.

In 2017 and up until August of this year, September also hosted a talk show on Elgin FM. In her show, called Nali-themba, which means ‘there is hope’, September would talk about an experience she had had, concluding from it a reason to be hopeful.

September has been travelling by taxi to campus every day since 2015.

The lack of her own transport proves problematic to her active lifestyle“My car is somewhere. I’ll get my car irrespective of the fact that I am not employed”. September’s mother passed away while giving birth.

When faced with challenges, this, however, serves as September’s greatest motivation as it reminds her that she is alive for a reason.“If I didn’t die then, I’m not going to die now. I’ll die later – there is something that I have to do first,” she said.

Star Wars, The Godfather, Forrest Gump en Ballade vir ’n Enkeling; die lys kan verewig aanhou. Maties word al vir 100 jaar vermaak deur flieks, maar gedurende hierdie tyd het die hoe en die waar van flieks baie verander.

Waar alles begin het.

Die eerste beelduitsending wat vir Stellenbossers toeganklik was, was in 1906, toe dit in die Tivoli Musieksaal in Kaapstad uitgesaai is.

Hierdie uitsending was ’n krieketwedstryd tussen Suid-Afrika en Engeland op Nuweland, maar het geen klank gehad nie. Die koms van klankfilms was egter veel later in 1927, met die eerste Suid-Afrikaanse klankfilm wat in 1931 gemaak is: Sarie Marais, deur Joseph Albrecht.

Fliekvermaak begin studente raak Daar was reeds in 1958 twee bioskope op Stellenbosch en volgens Wena Visagie, ’n destydse student wat op die dorp ’n sekretariële kursus gedoen het, was die go-to vir studente die Fliekvlooi-bioskoop omdat “hy bietjie goedkoper was as die ander een”. Hulle gunsteling film was King Creole, ’n fliek oor Elvis Presley.

Volgens Visagie was hierdie film heeltemal taboe.

“Dosente het ons gewaarsku oor hierdie flieks en in daardie tyd is sulke films as onwelvoeglik gesien. Tipies student, het dit ons nie gekeer nie en het dit ons net aangevuur om die fliek te gaan kyk.”

Ag pleez deddy Inry-teaters het hul verskyning gemaak in die 1950’s en het bestaan uit groot buitelugskerms met ’n projektor wat die beeld wys.

Die klank het vanaf luidsprekers wat deur die vensters van voertuie gehang het, gekom. Inry-teaters was so gewild dat dit selfs in liedjies hul verskyning gemaak het, soos Jeremy Taylor se “Ag pleez deddy”. Volgens Jessie Maritz, ’n alumnus van die Universiteit Stellenbosch (US), was daar nog nie baie studente met karre destyd nie, maar vir die wat karre gehad het was die inry-teater ’n gewilde bestemming, en verversings is gewoonlik verskaf op ’n skinkbord wat jy aan jou voertuig se venster kon hang.

Die Vlakte en filmteaters Apartheid het selfs ’n rol in bioskope van die 1960’s en 1970’s gespeel. Volgens ’n berig in Die Burger (29 Maart 2017), was die Gaiety-bioskoop in Andringastraat in die “sosiale bymekaarkomplek van die

bruin gemeenskap”.

Televisie, tegnologie en teaters Die koms van die televisie in Suid-Afrika in 1976, of “beeldradio” soos dit eers bekendgestaan het, het die hele land op hol gehad en het ’n groot invloed op fliekteaters gehad, want dit het mense in staat gestel om flieks te kan geniet in die gemak van hul sitkamers.

Studente sien nie televisie vandag meer as hul hoofbron van vermaak nie, en daar is min studente oor wat nie hul fliekdosis kry deur óf hul eie Netflixintekenaarskap, óf deur goeie vriende met een of ander oom of tannie wat Netflix het, wat “jy ook sommer kan gebruik” nie. Vandag is die enigste teater wat in Stellenbosch oorleef het Pulp Cinema, in die Neelsie. Pulp het in Januarie 2011 oopgemaak en volgens Werner de Swardt, eienaar van Pulp, was die doel daaragter om ’n meer formele en permanente plek te skep vir die Filmvereniging van die US. De Swardt sê Pulp se lidmaatskap het baie toegeneem die afgelope sewe jaar en dit wys die waarde wat studente daaraan heg om deel van ’n gemeenskaplike ervaring eerder as ’n individualistiese een te wees.

The chronicles of CoffeeMM JADE KERCHHOFF

When he was thirteen years old, Mhlengi Ngcobo was diagnosed with high blood pressure of which the apparent onset was because of his consumption of caffeine – especially in the form of coffee.

He discovered that the caffeine found in naturally grown coffee is the healthiest, even being considered the healthiest beverage, second to water.

Mhlengi is now a third year civil engineering student, and the sole owner of a lucrative coffee roasting company that goes by the name of CoffeeMM. After participating in a project management course that exposed him to the nitty-gritty of manufacturing a product and managing a business, he established his business in March 2017 and officially began trading at the beginning of this year.

Mhlengi works in conjunction with suppliers who import coffee beans from a number of farmers across the continent.

He is particularly passionate about working with farmers from African countries specifically because he aspires to empower and expose these farmers to a platform on which they will be able to market and trade their resources.

Once the coffee is imported, he sends it to a company to roast on his behalf, and then employs a number of people to package his freshly roasted coffee and off it goes to be shipped to his customers. Mhlengi operates solely online off his website – coffeemm. co.za. He aspires to eventually establish his very own coffee shop in either Stellenbosch, Cape Town or his home-province of KZN. His long term goal, however, is to be allowed the opportunity to

distribute his products in retail stores, as well as to be recognized by larger companies who would be interested in investing in a franchise of his busines.

As a student entrepreneur, juggling academics and a business is not child’s play, but Mhlengi strongly believes that “if you don’t sacrifice for what you love, what you love becomes a sacrifice”.

Fashion tends to make a trendy comeback

Over the last 100 years there have been numerous iconic fashion trends. Some of these make you cringe when looking back at photos from that era. Somehow a few of these iconic, cringe worthy fashion trends have made their way back into 2018’s fashion. With this being SU’s centenary commemoration,Linné Du Preez has decided to see which of the last century’s fashion trends are worn on campus today.

The sexy 60s

Fashion in the 1960s reflected the youth, from extremely short skirts to costume like outfits worn by hippies.

The clothes were very colourful, bright and covered with floral patterns.

Even though most people stopped dressing like hippies after the 60’s, the floral patterns have ever since been very popular. In the last couple of years, the amount of floral clothes on campus has increased.

Especially during summer time, you see people wearing floral pants, shirts, dresses, shoes and even bags.

The trendy 20s

This retro wavy hair style was very popular back in the day.

This look is once again seen on campus and at House Dances.

Even though you will have to wake up a few minutes earlier to master it.

There are still a fair number of girls who are slaying this trend.

The arty 80s

The thrifty 1950s

The 80s are probably the most cringeworthy era, with the permed hair, neon clothes and leg warmers. Looking back at photos of our parents wearing these outfits, we have all thought that we will never dress like that. Ironically, the 80s trends are slowly but surely creeping back into fashion and are actually looking very fashionable. In the last few months, scrunchies have taken control over campus. Girls all over campus are rocking the once cringe worthy but now trending schrunchie.

The swing dress was a highly fashionable trend in the 50s because of the flattering way it moves when you walk. The length of the dress is usually below the knees, like the Afrikaans people will say: “dit is ʼn okkie rokkie, ook nie lank nie maar ook nie kort nie.” Today on campus we find a different variety of these swing dresses.

Some of them have colourful patterns, some are made from denim material, and some of them are a tight fit.

The naughty 90s

Chokers were very fashionable in the 90s.

The choker is an easy accessory that can pull an outfit together.

It can be worn casually with jeans and a T-shirt for campus, or it can even be worn with a more formal outfit for a girl’s night out.

Some of the chokers are big and bulky while others are very feminine and elegant.

The sweet 70s

A classic trend from the 70s are the round sunglasses made popular by John Lennon from The Beatles. This is a classic style that can be worn by women and men. Today a lot of students are seen wearing them on campus, like Michaela who is looking on fleek with her John Lennon sunglasses.

Fashion 2000s Crop tops are back and they are bigger than ever.

The mini shirt was originally a popular trend in the 00s – it was so popular that it was even worn on the red carpet sometimes.

In 2018 it is usually worn with high waisted jeans, shorts or skirt.

The crop top can have short sleeves, long sleeves, no sleeves, or can be off the shoulder.

Fashion from today

The fashion trends people wear today are inspired by previous trends from other eras. We do have a few of our own trends – for instance, happy socks are worn by both guys and girls on campus. Fun and colourful socks are something new.

Dum Chang will be making Bohemia Happy Hour even happier SAARAH ABRAHAMS

What do you get when you combine different music styles such as indie rock, blues, alternative rock and modernized sound synthesizers?

Locally started indie synth-rock band Dum Chang could probably tell you all about it as their success rises with each passing day.

Tanner Wareham, guitarist, keyboardist and vocalist for Dum Chang said: “What I get from music is just happiness and enjoyment etcetera. I may not be able to take a direct message from it but just the emotions that it invokes in me.

That’s what I want other people to feel.”

Dum Chang consists of Wareham, vocalist Josh EastonBerry and drummer Todd Bauermeister, all originally from Durban, but the band started when they reconnected in Stellenbosch during their first year as students.

After seeing the Red Hot Chilli Peppers perform that year, they were inspired by what they had seen as they were all huge fans of the group. Upon performing covers of the band’s songs they decided to

give being a band a go.

The band was originally classified as an indie rock band, playing mostly indie and blues, but with the departure of two former band members they were forced to take a different route to bridge the gap in their sound.

With the addition of a keyboard, electronic sounds, synths and a more modernized approach to music, the band formed the sound they are known for today – a mixture of alternative rock and modern synth elements but still indie.

They liken their sound to their biggest inspirations: the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Twenty One Pilots and music producer Jon Bellion.

They perform covers of songs by bands they admire but predominantly perform their own music.

Vocalists Wareham and EastonBerry are responsible for the lyrics and music composition of all the band’s tracks, and say the lyrics are “stuff that’s happening in our lives like a relationship or what we want to achieve”.

Wareham also said that there aren’t any things the band has ever done that they regret. Previously, when Dum

Chang consisted of five members, there were issues arising from the clashing personalities and conflicting of agendas. Once they became a trio, however, there were significantly fewer problems as they were all on the same page. But all things considered, music has had no negative effects on their lives.

Dum Chang has had four songs playlisted on national, and including one international, radio stations to date, with their song ‘Atticus Finch’ sky rocketing their success. They were hoping for more of their music to reach the same levels on radio but accepted that it “obviously doesn’t always work like that”. They recently performed at the Rocking the Daisies festival after winning a slot through audience vote, and say this helps their career as people now have confidence in their skills when considering whether to book them for events.

The band credits their success to their current producer, without whom they could not have recorded their first EP. Further they mention friends and

fans, a n d everyone who encouraged them to keep going and to keep pushing.

In their latest EP, ‘Tall Order’, Dum Chang successfully conveys the message to other musicians that it’s tough in the

music industry, but not to let that get you down – just keep

going.

Patlansky Preachin’ Blues in Stellenbosch WILLOW-RUBY VAN DER BERG

race yourself, Stellenbosch, because the local blues-rock wizard, Dan Patlansky, is going to make some magic on stage this weekend at Aandklas.

Patlansky is a national and international blues-rock music legend of note.

Two of his albums, Introvertigo and Dear Silence Thieves, were both independently voted as the number one Blues Rock Album in the world by the Blues Rock Review USA. He is to date the only artist that has received this exalted award twice, competing with big names in the blues-rock industry such as Rival Sons, The Black Keys and Joe Bonamassa.

In 2014 Patlansky opened for Bruce Springsteen with an audience of 64 000 people in Johannesburg.

It is not often that Springsteen has an opening act for his shows, so this was one of Patlansky’s personal career highlights.

Of course, Patlansky has a wide discography and has been the receiver of many awards over the years, but

at this stage some major highlights according to him include: “Launching the self-produced album Perfection Kills internationally and locally [and] selling out our previous UK tour for the first time.”

Perfection Kills is Patlansky’s ninth album which he also produced himself. The album is already a success as the launches in both Europe and South Africa were sold out.

It has a very distinct tone in comparison to his previous albums as it has a very raw and personal sound, since he tried to record the ten songs on this album in such a way that it would sound live. “(It is) a more organic and raw album that represents me far better as far as playing live,” said Patlansky.

According to him his sound has also been influenced in various ways: “Other great musicians are always a main influence on me such as Stevie Ray Vaughan, Hendrix etc. Everyday life also has a major impact on what and how I write music.”

HOLD ON Dan Patlansky making us all swoon once again.

Patlansky and his band will be performing several songs from this new album, as well as a few favourites from previous albums, for us to rock out to at Aandklas this Saturday, 27 October.

This performance is a leg of his electric tour through South Africa before he goes to Hungary, Poland, and the UK later this year.

“I will continue to tour the new

album in SA and abroad. We leave in November for the second Perfection Kills tour in the UK and parts of Europe. When I return in early December I get involved with my annual guitar weekends, which I very much look forward to,” said Patlansky.

The talented Jason Oosthuizen adds to his repertoire JANA GREYLING Jason Oosthuizen is a household name in the South African music industry.

Having started playing the drums at the age of four, he has gone on to form part of well-known South African bands such as Van Coke Cartel, Fokofpolisiekar, Die Heuwels Fantasties and Lost & Found, recording various studio albums with all of them.

Now Jason has decided to add to his musical repertoire with his solo project – OOOTH. OOOTH started in September this year with the project’s debut

single ‘Hands Under the Table’ and its accompanying music video being released in the same month.

On taking the step into a solo career to become the front-man, and lead guitarist, Jason said: “It has been interesting, challenging, very selfmotivating and exciting all at the same time.”

Jason has written, recorded and produced most of OOOTH’s album himself, and describes his music as “plain and simple Rock ’n Roll – no electronics”.

His music has evolved throughout his career.

and taste: “I would say that it just became stronger and more me and what I like to play and hear.”

As some of his biggest challenges around creating OOOTH Jason lists: “learning how to play the guitar, sing and be a front-man – all in under a year”.

Alongside OOOTH, Jason has also launched his own snare drum range called J.O Drums, OOOTH Coffee and OOOTH Clothing brands, as well as some Tribute Shows playing all around the country.

“For now I want to focus on OOOTH, my Tribute Shows, J.O Drums, OOOTH Clothing and OOOTH Coffee and just enjoy what

I’m doing,” said Oosthuizen.

His biggest plans for next year include launching his signature J.O Drums in America and touring abroad with OOOTH. In the future he would like to collaborate with Josh Homme from Queens of the Stone Age and continue writing his own music.

OOOTH’s debut album, Who Cares What You Think, will be released in November this year.

Varsity Acapella: a fabulous first for SU VARSITY ACAPELLA R E S U L T S 2 0 1 8

he first national Varsity Acapella Competition proved to be a wonderful evening filled with many renditions of Ed Sheeran’s ‘Perfect’.

Only three universities were competing this year - Stellenbosch University, University of the North West, and the University of the Free State. Still, every group brought something wonderful to the evening.

For Tygerberg’s Synergy, in their New York street-wise style, it was their tremendous energy and velvety solo voices: “We are definitely really happy about the performance. When we started off, we didn’t know where our journey was going,” said their leader, Siyanda Mbambo.

For the glittering gold tribe Kagiso, it was their outstanding control of volume and their dynamic stage presence.

As the results have clearly shown, the aproned ladies of Huis ten Bosch brought great choreography and soloists like songbirds, the entire group staying impressively in tune despite the ambitious harmonies they performed. For this they received an enthused standing ovation.

“It was an unbelievable experience - I’d definitely do it again if time allowed it.” said Bjorn Lawson of Huis ten Bosch, who went on to win Best Female Soloist later that night The girls in baggy flower pants did not follow a theme as such for Irene and Minjonet struggled with staying

The bellboys of Laureus had the entire audience jumping to their feet for their show-stopping performance.

“I think, regardless of the outcome, I’m crying,” said Kyle Snyman, from Laureus.

What set the striped-shirt boys of Simonsberg apart was their outstanding musicality, maintaining excellent pitch and balance, and their well-deserved award for Best Male Soloist.

During the wait for the judges to make their decision, singers from all different groups spontaneously began to sing and dance together, stopping only when the results were announced, and resuming promptly afterwards.

The new Chairperson of the SRC, Carli van Wyk, was very positive about the event: “I think it was an amazing platform created by KUKO, where the talents of this university and the talents of South Africa have been brought to the table, and we’re here to celebrate it.”

As the first Varsity Acapella Competition since the ATKV National Competition collapsed in 2016, this has been a major feat for SU’s Kultuur Kommitee. Chairman of Kuko, Blaine Josephs was also optimistic about the evening as a whole: “I am basically coming off this huge adrenaline rush. It happened – that’s all that matters to me, and it’s satisfying knowing that as KUKO for 2018 we were able to pull this off so well. See you next year - we’re going to come back bigger than ever.”

Uncle Spike hoog op vanjaar se agenda POP X ART: a splurge of music and art TIVAN LEAK

Die vreemdste ervaring wat die groep, Uncle Spike, nóg gehad het, was toe hulle ná ’n vertoning

by Grey College in Bloemfontein saam met die onderwysers gekuier het.

Volgens Michael Burke, saksofoon speler, was van die onderwysers nie in hulle noppies met die gebruik van sigarette en dwelms in hulle lirieke nie.

Die groep hou daarvan om gebruik te maak van simbole en gaan baie intensioneel om met die gebruik van hierdie simbole.

Die lede het vanaf 2016 by Wilgenhof se kultuuraande begin saam speel. Hulle het egter eers verlede jaar ’n naam gekry en die eerste groot geleentheid waarby hulle opgetree het was by die Woordfees in dieselfde jaar.

“Dit is moeilik om almal

bymekaar te kry vir ’n optrede,” het Paul Twekye gesê.

Volgens Van der Veen het hulle dit aanvanklik baie belangrik geag om al die lede van die groep by optredes teenwoordig te hê, maar dat hulle weet dit nie altyd moontlik is nie.

“Ons het besluit dat solank meeste van die lede of ten minste die kernlede van die groep daar kan wees, ons sal optree.”

Burke het egter verduidelik dat dit die logistiek vergemaklik met die dat meeste van die lede van die groep in Wilgenhof woonagtig is.

Die groep het nie vasgestelde oefentye nie, maar probeer om ten minste twee maal per week byeen te kom. Twekye het verduidelik dat die groepslede op die ingewing van die oomblik moet kan oefen.

Hulle debuutalbum I in the sky is vanjaar bekendgestel. Die groep het verduidelik dat dit vir hulle aangenaam is dat daar ’n verwysingspunt is wat hulle aanhangers kan gebruik om die lirieke van hulle liedjies te leer ken.

“Ons het nie hoë verwagtinge gehad nie. Dit was die eerste pakket wat ons vir mense kon gee,” het Van der Veen verduidelik.

Die hoofdoel van vanjaar vir die groep was, volgens Twekye, om by Daisies te speel. Hierdie doel het ongelukkig nie vanjaar gerealiseer nie, maar die groep is vol hoop vir volgende jaar.

Die groep word gereeld gevra in

watter genre hulle musiek geklassifiseer kan word.

“Dit is ’n moeilike vraag om te beantwoord as mens op die tradisionele wyse daaroor dink.

Maar ons speel net wat pret is. Ons almal het verskillende insae en ons almal hou van verskillende dinge,” het Burke verduidelik.

Die element wat volgens Van der Veen deurlopend deur meeste van hulle liedjies opgemerk kan word is ’n verassingselement.

Die interessantste 2018-storie van die groep het afgespeel tydens ’n toer in Pretoria. Die groep was veronderstel om by Tuks op te tree, maar die vertoning is op kort kennisgewing afgestel.

Hulle het toe dieselfde aand nog net buite Arcade Empire opgetree. Die groep vertel dat daar net ’n klein groep mense by die vertoning was, maar dat hierdie groep behoorlik uitgehaak het.

Een van die toeskouers het selfs geval en hulle kop teen Twekye se baskitaar gestamp.

Die groep se planne vir die toekoms is nog nie langtermyn bepaal nie, maar hulle het verduidelik dat dit sal afhang van geleenthede en tydsberekening.

“Ons sal daarvan hou om die Uncle Spike skrif op die plakkate te vergroot,” het Burke verduidelik. Die groep sal bereid wees om voltyds musiek te maak indien hulle ’n geleentheid kry om die wêreld te toer.

Tonight, the Conserve is opening its doors to give Stellenbosch a taste of its talent.

“Pop X Art” is a concept developed by the Stellenbosch Music Department’s only undergraduate composers, Katya Zoio and Marlene Vlok. It combines a musical performance with an art exhibition by local Stellenbosch students, including artworks by Zoio herself.

The programme will feature orchestrations of popular songs by artists such as Lana Del Rey and the Beatles, as well as Zoio and Vlok’s own original compositions.

“I think there are a lot of people who underestimate pop music in the classical music industry, many think there are only four chords used, but there is a lot of art behind making a pop song.

“So, I really think that the fact we want to combine the two is something really new – to show people both the differences and the similarities between the two.” said Vlok.

The two composers have an interesting synergy, and have coincidentally composed works which complement one another, such as Zoio’s ‘Light’ and Vlok’s ‘Shadows’.

“That wasn’t planned at all. It was just part of our portfolios - her ‘Light’ had already been written last year, I didn’t think of that at all when I wrote ‘Shadows’.

“I was inspired by a work for a double string quartet or string orchestra and was just thinking how

shadows are really something that, like light, can be played with a lot. We do have a lot of similarities though: we’re both very inspired by nature, the stuff around us, and are very passionate Photo:that BLAINE JOSEPHS people, and I think comes across in our music,” said Vlok.

This concert will represent the culmination of Zoio and Vlok’s work thus far in their degrees. “It’s a lot of our blood, sweat, and tears throughout the year,” Zoio explained. “Being a composer, it’s hard to find the inspiration, to find that piece of you that you will disconnect and put into a piece of music that you want others to hear. So, to have people attend our concert would be absolutely amazing for us. I think between the two of us we’ve put together such interesting pieces – they’re very diverse. They’re not as off-the-wall as people might expect - I think some people are little bit afraid that they’ll be too modern or different. There are obviously a couple of experimental compositions, which I think would be wrong not to put in as they’ve been part of our development as composers, but I think on the greater part it’s who we are that is being portrayed through the concert, and I really think it would be great for people to come watch and to see something new coming out of Stellenbosch.”

The concert will take place tonight at 20:00 in the Fismer Hall in the Konservatorium and will be performed by a selection of students from the Music Department. Tickets are available for R20 at the door, R10 for members of Musicultus.

Look who’s running the SU campus Early one Wednesday morning, while on their Die Matie delivery route, an exhausted Kathryn van den Berg and barely-functioning Janique Oliver happened upon a group of early morning runners. After questing the insanity of 6am exercise, the pair decided to interview the group.

Gerald Williams, an engineering student doing his Masters (and who takes every opportunity to express his hatred for the concept of a thesis), betrayed himself when saying how he only joined the group to mooch lifts off members going to races. “[I] sat on the [WhatsApp] group for about a year as one of those lurkers waiting for opportunities to catch a lift to races. Then I was like…wait… there is something I am missing out on here,” said Williams smiling.

After deciding to step out of his comfort zone as a solo runner, Williams explained how incredible his first run with the group was.

His passion for Everyrun seemed to grow as the interview progressed, as did his jokes and personality.

When asked if he finds Everyrun to be a stress relief, Williams exclaimed that “running encourages you to push yourself mentally”.

Further, the cliché of “a healthy body healthy mind” was added by a genuine Williams while the rest of the team reacted with sighs and head shakes.

Giggling the loudest of all in response to her fellow-runner was Judy Mellet, a final year BAcc student at SU who definitely thinks that running with a group of friends is the best type of study break.

“I always say that joining Everyrun is like having coffee with friends, but while running.”

“Mentally, it is so nice belonging to something that everyone is passionate about,” explained Mellet.

On the topic of passion, Mellet also expressed how hers grew when she reached the goal she set herself when she began running with the group.

“My goal was to do a 21km before I was 21. I reached my own goal, and more, by completing two.”

Fatuma then followed up by explaining how running with Everyrun inspires individuals to give themselves personal goals.

“When you have a goal you’ll push yourself to reach that goal, and if you have a purpose to run you will push yourself to run – you will continue to show up.”

Attention was then turned to Padiachy, whose furious nodding in agreement to what his co-runners said once again showed the fellowship of

this group. As a closing remark to what seemed more like a catch-up amongst friends than an interview, Padiachy said the following: “For me,

I love seeing people get active.

What makes this group different is just the people and the fellowship, and, to quote High School Musical ‘we’re all in this together’.

Run with people who support you. If it’s us, you are very welcome.”

Editorial SHOULD WE CELEBRATE THE CENTENARY? A hundred years have gone by.

Saying that a lot can happen in a hundred years is an understatement.

The past 100 years have seen the end of two world wars, the start and end of apartheid, the dramatic increase in global prosperity, but also a great increase in inequality.

The question we now have before us is if these 100 years are worth celebrating and then more specifically should we celebrate the university’s contribution to these 100 years.

To answer this question we’ll have to consider an underlying philosophical question: why should we celebrate anything?

Why do we celebrate birthdays and victories, gains and not losses, life and not death?

Maybe it is because we have a certain idea of what we think the world should be like and if something distracts or removes us from this ideal, we see it as bad and therefore not worth celebrating.

Just as we see things that contribute to realising our ideal as good and therefore worth celebrating.

We are very protective of our ideals and we are vicious in fending off attacks on or challenges to our ideals.

Keeping in mind that these ideals are not set in stone, but that they change as time goes by.

It is important for us to be open to change our ideals so that we can stand where we are today and say that we think slavery is wrong and

that racial discrimination is wrong even though there were periods in history when people thought it was acceptable.

We have learned a great number of lessons from the past 100 years which now allows us to stand on the shoulders of giants.

The university has contributed greatly to bettering the lives of all people in South Africa by its research in many different fields.

The university has contributed to the discourse and debate that helps us form our ideals.

Being part of that legacy is in its own way worth celebrating.

It is also important to keep a clear mind of where we are heading with a deep understanding of the past so that we do not repeat the wrong-doings thereof.

I hope that within the next 100 years the university will continue to grow and keep us and the country on our toes.

I hope that students’ voices will never get lost, no matter what language they speak.

I am proud to be a Matie and I shall continue to be a proud Matie, but it is not an unconditional pride.

I believe that the reason the university has managed to stay at the top of the ladder in South Africa is that students are encouraged to engage at the highest levels of decision-making, but also that alumni are encouraged to return here and use their knowledge for the greater good.

Whatever it may be.

Dit is vir Gorrel kommerwekkend dat studente met baie kamerpunte benadeel word omdat hulle nie in sekere seniors se smaak val nie.

Perspektiewe Centenary branding of mental illness

A centenary year for any institution always begs the question, “What will be done to celebrate?”

Typically, institutions make a splash of such a big birthday, after all, 100 years is a momentous milestone.

But, how big of a splash is necessary?

Branding of the University has always been important as it is seen by all and sets a tone of professionalism and uniformity.

It can be said that branding creates a sense of togetherness and belonging for students, faculty-members and alumni.

But when is branding of an educational institution excessive?

After reading the document “Centenary Brand Identity Manual and Resource Templates” published

by the University of Stellenbosch to ensure “that diverse audiences have a consistent experience in their interactions with the University.”

Repeated interactions with a consistent SU brand will reinforce key messages and priorities,” it dawned upon me that no stone was left unturned.

Everything from colour palettes and typography to ‘Thank You Slips’ and corporate folders had strict guidelines.

So, what’s the issue? Perhaps one stone left for turn-over at a later stage in the though process was the student body.

Maybe the University thought the leafy 100 logo would look great on a poster, or even better, on a t-shirt!

Caught up in the spirit, I found

myself buying a centenary sweater for a lot heftier of a price than I’d like to admit.

And then I re-considered all of this and asked myself, ‘how much of the centenary branding is going to tangibly help the student body?’

A commendable student-inspired effort like #Move4Food has been actively running on campus, but is it enough?

While extremely important, the 2018 student body needs things besides food as well.

Are we not avoiding the elephant in the room - what about mental illness?

One awareness day and an email now and again to remind us of the rather small institution said to be assisting any member of the student body dealing with mental health

Helshoogte bringing sexism back?

related issues is sub-par.

If one in every three students needed advice on mental health, it is questionable how the Centre for Student Counselling and Development will handle the demand of 10 000+ students.

Here is hoping that the Mental Health Task Team put in place to aid the

situation will do as good and effective of a job as the Centenary Project Office and Corporate Communication Division committee have done.

On Remembering ‘Die Vlakte’

Recently a friend of mine wrote an article calling out Helshoogte Men’s Residence on their ‘Demolition Day’ where various objects are thrown from the top floors of the staggeringly high residence.

Days after the article was published and began circulating on social media, my friend received a screenshot of a Helshoogte section group chat where one of the men was claiming that she could not be taken seriously, or be objective about the issue, because earlier in the year she had been in a relationship and was supposedly rejected by a man from Helshoogte.

Naturally, the author and many others who saw the screenshot (myself included) were appalled and disgusted by this overt sexism and petty counterattack to her article.

In the article titled “Boys Will Be Boys, Right” the author asks what many were thinking when images of flat screen televisions being thrown through broken windows emerged on social media: why this exorbitant waste and destruction all in the name of tradition?

She then went on to criticise the toxic behaviour that is perpetuated in men’s residences and gave her opinion on these issues.

To be met with criticism after sharing your opinion is not unexpected.

However, as a woman, being criticised or having your opinions dismissed because of your romantic past is nothing short of insensitive and sexist bullying.

The article was never intended to be objective, it was an opinion and speculation into the practices of

Helshoogte and it certainly was not the result of some petty personal vendetta.

The reason this response frustrated and disgusted me so much was because it draws on so many sexist assumptions about women’s abilities to be independent of their emotions and to be taken seriously on an intellectual level. If a man had written this article would he be called out on his romantic or sexual history and thus dismissed as being emotional or petty?

Why is criticism from a woman met with an immediate attack on her emotional past?

It is insulting that critics would sooner turn to a sexist personal attack than meet the author at the same intellectual level at which she addressed them.

If anything, this response reinforces the exact point the author was making in the first place. The environments in men’s residences foster attitudes which are neither transformative, nor reflective of a progressive and accepting culture.

We cannot hope to combat genderbased discrimination and assumptions when those acts of discrimination and assumption-making are so readily accepted as okay ways to deal with issues.

If the culture that condones such behaviour is not being challenged it will only continue.

When #MenAreTrash started

circulating, many of the ‘good and innocent’ men were angered and did not understand why the hashtag was so all-encompassing of men in general.

But this is a prime example of what it means – comments such as the one that was made about my friend are part of the problem, and not calling your friends and other men out when they exhibit such behaviour makes you complicit in allowing these acts to continue unchecked.

Donald Trump recently said that it’s a dangerous time to be a man right now because you never know when you’re going to be accused of sexual assault or of being a misogynist or exhibiting sexist behaviour.

But really, it is not. All that is happening is that people are becoming less tolerant of problematic behaviour because it is becoming more and more evident that this behaviour is hindering progress. It’s 2018 – it is not the time for toxic masculinity, and it is certainly not the time to be calling women out on their romantic and sexual pasts when they criticise you.

Stellenbosch University recently held its annual Transformation Indaba.

The programme included a presentation on (art) works aimed at the visual redress of the university.

These works are set to be installed within the next few months.

Among these will be a ceilingto-floor pictorial/collage that will represent what one would have seen, before 25 September 1964, walking into today’s Arts and Social Sciences building; Die Vlakte.

Die Vlakte is a community that was forcefully removed in Stellenbosch in operation of the Group Areas Act. Today, in the grey corridors of the building, reads a timeline in remembrance of this.

Die Vlakte exemplifies Apartheid violence; schools, people’s homes, a cinema, churches, a mosque, businesses - the disruption of close to 3500 families from an established way of life.

We come seeking better futures through education here, yet the injustice of the Die Vlakte removals stare us in the face.

Projects to remember Die Vlakte are necessary and well overdue.

Walrdon’s Superseding Historic Injustice insists firstly we must remember historical injustices to resolve them (1992:5-7).

Innocence from this injustice is unavailable to us as stakeholders of the university.

What haunts this issue more pressingly is that it is not as historical as we might like.

THATO PHATLANE Symbolic acts of reparation turn into obscene reminders when they are not conjoined with serious material projects to eradicate the disadvantages linked to the historic violation.

The violation stays with those whose lives it has brought greater hardship.

Renee Allison HectorKannemeyer’s work makes the point that the trauma of Die Vlakte removals is in fact present (2010).

Her work accounts for some houses still standing today as among the same buildings that made up Die Vlakte and others can still be pointed out as where grandparents used to live, before they were forcefully removed (6465).

The university established a bursary scheme for descendants of Die Vlakte.

It offers five bursaries per year.

As for why the choice of so few opportunities for a violation that spans roughly 3500 families as the only material response to this injustice I cannot say.

My objection is since the memory work stands also to serve as representative of the university’s efforts to transform; surely it cannot be enough to say “All we can offer materially, are five bursaries a year for the displacement of a whole community.”

These symbolic interventions alone then offer only half measures of justice that can now no longer go unseen. * Thato Phatlane is a final year BA LLB student as well as a freelance writer.

Maties sporttoekennings vereer uitblinkers ANNERINE SNYMAN

M

aties Sport het vanjaar weereens hulself by hulle jaarlikse toekennings oortref.

Hierdie toekenningseremonie, wat uitblinkers in sport by die Universiteit Stellenbosch (US) vereer, was ’n glansende affêre wat vanjaar in die Stellenbosch stadsaal gehou is.

Die gasspreker op die aand was Kas Naidoo, wat Suid-Afrika se eerste vroulike krieketkommentator op 27-jarige ouderdom geword het en intussen die gsport-trust geskep het om vroue se aansien binne sport te bevorder.

Toekennings wat gedurende die seremonie op 15 Oktober oorhandig is, sluit in klub van die jaar (Maties Rugbyklub), afrigter van die jaar (Hawies Fourie) en span van die jaar (Maties Rugby eerstespan).

Daar is ook vir die uitblinkers in elke sportkode half en volkleure toegeken vir hulle deelname op óf provinsiale óf nasionale vlak.

Maties para-atleet en swemmer, Christian Sadie, het die parasportman van die jaar toekenning ontvang.

Hy het ’n silwer medalje vir die S7 50 m-vryslag by die Statebondspele vroeër vanjaar in Australië verwerf.

Die sportman en -vrou vir vanjaar was Duncan Saal (rugby) en Ammaarah Hendricks (hokkie)

SPORTMAN VAN FORMAAT Duncan Saal is sportman van die jaar. Ammaarah Hendricks, sportvrou van die jaar, was in Argentinië tydens die seremonie en kon nie haar toekenning ontvang nie. onderskeidelik. Saal het in die Varsitybeker-toernooi uitgestaan en gevolglik is hy as die agterlynspeler van die toernooi verkies.

Hy was ook ’n lid van die SA studente-sewesspan wat goud by die Wêreld Studente Sewes Kampioenskap

verower het. Hy is verder ook ’n lid van die WP Curriebekerspan. ’n Hoogtepunt vir Saal, ’n derdejaar-B.Ed-student, was om die Varsitybeker op tuisbodem te verower.

speel, maar ook om vir die Stormers gedurende die Super Rugby-seisoen uit te draf.

Oor sy sportman van die jaar toekenning is Saal verheug oor die hoeveelheid ondersteuning wat hy ontvang het.

What the future holds for Esports at SU

“Dit [om die toekenning te ontvang] was baie spesiaal en so onwerklik. Ek het dit regtig nie verwag nie, maar dit is seker harde werk wat deur God se genade beloon word,” het Saal gesê.

Hendricks, is ’n eerstejaar-BCom (Internasionale Besigheid)-student.

Sy het Suid-Afrika in die Jeug Olimpiese Spele in Argentinië verteenwoordig toe die seremonie plaasgevind het en kon dit dus nie bywoon om haar toekenning self te ontvang nie.

“Dit was totaal onverwags, veral omdat ek die jongste klublid is. Om hierdie nuus te ontvang terwyl ek oorsee was, is ongelooflik,” het sy van haar reaksie gesê.

“Hierdie toekenning is ’n absolute eer.

Ek is ongelooflik trots op die feit dat my harde werk beloon word asook dat dit deur my universiteit erken word, veral in my eerste jaar,” het sy verder verduidelik.

Hendricks hoop verder om deel van die SA o/21-vrouespan te wees en om moontlik in die kwalifiserende rondes van die junior Wêreldbeker te speel.

Sy mik ook om eendag kaptein van die nasionale vrouespan te wees.

Verder sal sy ook graag vir ’n Duitse of Nederlandse klub in die Europese hokkieliga wil speel.

Starting in 2017, Maties eSports has been on the rise over the past two years.This year culminated in the finals at MWEB offices in Cape Town on 14 October for both Counter Strike Global Offensive (CS:GO) and DOTA 2.

For both the games there was a single elimination stage over a three week period leading up to the finals.

Each game consisted of a ‘best of three’ format.

Eight teams started both CS:GO and DOTA 2.

For CS:GO, it was Blackout eSports that claimed the championship in a tight 2-1 map clinch against NBC. Playing on the likes of Nuke, Dust 2 and lastly Overpass.

Honourable mentions go to Dustpacito and Dart Gaming for claiming 3rd and 4th place respectively. The majority of the DOTA 2 tournament was held online, and in the final match the winner of the tournament was Republic of Flaming defeating Team Natsuki decisively 2-0. For the FIFA league this year there was a ranking system used in which individual players were awarded XP (experience points) based on their final placement in the tournaments that were held in the Neelsie on Mondays and Wednesdays.

The top players from this ranking system then played in a single knockout tournament which took place on 12 October in the Neelsie.

Njaps claimed victory after being the top qualifier and being entirely undefeated in the finals.

This year in Maties eSports the season was short, only spanning three months, but the idea for next year is to expand throughout the whole year like other sports on campus.

With eSports being a relatively new idea at Stellenbosch, and indeed in any university in South Africa,

GAMING STATION Esports players taking part in the competition. comes certain challenges for players and organisers. Maties Recreation and Active Lifestyles Unit (RALU) is a part of Maties Sport that initiated and governs Maties eSports.

Their aim is to expand Maties sport to cater for all students including those who are passionate for competitive gaming.

This adds to the idea that Stellenbosch University is trying to promote about an all-encompassing, inclusive learning and living environment. African Cyber Gaming League (ACGL) is the company that Maties Sport contracted to host this year’s competition due to the complexities and intricacies of hosting an online gaming tournament.

Nick Holden, the co-owner of the organisation, said: “I believe the events were successful, but there is always room for improvement,” when asked if the events achieved their aim.

On the idea of expanding eSports on campus, together Maties Sport and ACGL are looking to find more permanent solutions for gamers in

campus so that students do not have to supply their own money for equipment and, controversially, inetkey.

Kiran Maharaj, manager of the RALU Maties Sport unit, stated: “we are looking to grow eSports and would love to start a student club with a committee”.

Students who may not have participated this year, but would like to next year, can look forward to 2019 where many improvements are in the works and being discussed within Maties eSports. The player base at Stellenbosch is ever growing with casual and serious teams taking up the stage.

Residences, PSOs and Clusters can make teams together and enter next year to again compete for the title, and more importantly gain internet bragging rights. It is the leaders of 2019 that hold the responsibility to inform newcomers to the university that these gaming opportunities exist and are there for the enjoyment of the students like any other sport on campus.

Year in Review: Maties Centenary Games ADRIENNE VAN DER MERWE

Prof. Wim de Villiers addressed important questions this year such as: “Where do we come from, where do we stand now, where are we headed?”.

This has subsequently been projected onto several commemoratory events which have taken place – such as the Maties Centenary Games organized by the Recreation and Active Lifestyles Unit (RALU).

The Maties Centenary Games focused on gender-fluid sports.

It was a fun-filled sporting event which allowed SU students an active alternative to their stationary study routine.

RALU provided the location and necessary equipment, and students had to organize themselves into five-a-side teams and play in the absence of a referee.

“This is very good for promoting student interaction and actually learning to speak to

each other – that’s a big thing,” commented Kiran Maharaj from Maties Sport. Several sports were offered, such as sand rugby, futsal (a variant of football played on a hard court) and co-ed netball.

The participation of students was abundant and the activities were greatly enjoyed.

RALU has offered several sports-related activities for students throughout the year, such as group fitness sessions at residences and eSport gatherings.

The cluster which scored the highest points is AmaMaties, with Wimbledon in second position and Validus in third position.

This can all be found on the Maties app.

“With regards to 2019, we will continue with the Centenary Games, but we will be calling it the Matie Games,” Maharaj concluded. In addition, more sports will be introduced, such as Esports and quad cricket.

Backing our Boytjies for the next 100 years NATASHA RUSCH

T

his year has been an outstanding year for Stellenbosch University (SU) as it is not only the year that the University commemorates its Centenary, but additionally it has been a year of many victories for the Maties Rugby Club.

At the age of 142, the Maties Rugby club is the second oldest rugby club in South Africa, and this year they were awarded the ‘Club of the Year’ achievement at this year’s SU Sports Awards.

The club was awarded this accolade because in 2018 they won the Varsity Cup Competition, USSA competition, Varsity Cup Young

Guns Competition and the WP Super League A competition in both the First and Second League.

These achievements were just some of the many titles that the club has taken home this year, as Maties Rugby First Team were also awarded the ‘Team of the Year’.

Their head coach Hawies Fourie taking home the ‘Coach of the Year’ award.

The Maties Men’s 7s Rugby team also thrived this year as they won Intervarsity and then at the Varsity Cup 7s finished fifth, winning the Plate Final. Frederik van Zyl was named “Top Try Scorer”. Duncan Saal, who has played on the wing for the Maties Rugby First Team for the past three

years, was awarded the prestigious ‘Sportsman of the Year’ award at this year’s SU Sports Awards.

Not only was he a key player in Maties’s victory at the Varsity Cup tournament, but he was also named Backline Player of the Tournament.

When asked about this award, Saal accredited his title to his teammates in saying that “if the team looks good, then the individual looks good too”.

Additionally, Saal said: “I’m just grateful to God, and just blessed to have got through the season without any serious injuries.”

Saal and Niel Oelofse, the captain of the Maties Varisty Cup First Team, both said that the team was “very special” this year.

Oelofse, who plays loosehead prop “(the most important and goodlooking player in the team)”, said that their team had a good mix of youth, experience and a special bond.

When asked to further describe their year’s success, Oelofse said that their team learnt from their previous years and attributed their success to their coaching staff who “put in a lot of hard work and spent hours to ensure we had the best strategies for our various games”. He also further accredited their victories to their conditioning coach, Andre Smith, and the team physiotherapist, Tanya Green, as he said with their help the team had shorter injury recovery time and was also the best prepared for the

season. Oelofse has been a member of the Maties Rugby team since 2013 and, after failing to win the Varsity Cup three times prior to this year, his highlight was when the team beat NWU 40-7 to win the Cup. Oelofse said that “it was very special to play my last game for such a profound rugby club and then ending on a high note, lifting the Varsity Cup in the air”.

Although his time at Maties has come to an end, he said that he believes with Fourie already beginning to prep for next year, the team will continue to build the Maties brand. Oelofse has “no doubt that the team will do their best to ensure the Varsity Cup trophy stays in Stellenbosch”.

’n Toets van spoed en handvaardigheid het homself uitgewoed in die eerste stootkarresies wat aan die Universiteit Stellenbosch (US) gehou is, toe ag spanne met handgeboude stootkarre teen mekaar in die parkeerarea voor die Siviele Ingenieurswesegebou gejaag het.

Die uitdunrondes het volgens ’n dubbel-eliminasiestelsel gewerk.

Spanne wat twee keer in die uitdunrondes verloor het, is volgens hierdie stelsel uitgeskakel.

Die Wimbledon en Victoria

Klusters het tot die einde toe uitgehou, met Wimbledon wat toe die aarbeie en room gekry het om huis toe te neem, ná hulle in die finale wedloop geseëvier het.

Die stootkarre is ontwerp deur die Ingenieurswese se studenteraad wat op die dag ook aan die resies deelgeneem het met ’n eerste prototipe as hulle stootkar.

Hulle het ook al die onderdele vervaardig, en die planne opgestel.

Ben Wolfaardt van hierdie raad het gesê hy ondersteun die konsep vir die toekoms, en dat hulle dit in die vervolg

graag groter sal wil hê.

“As ons dalk al die koshuise en PSO’s kan kry om teen mekaar deel te neem sal dit great wees.”

Die idee was oorspronklik dat elkeen van die ag klusters ’n stootkar aanmekaarsit en daarmee deelneem.

Kiran Maharaj van Maties Sport, die dryfveer agter die kompetisie, het gesê: “Ons het die onderdele vir die stootkarre net voor Rocking the Daisies vir die klusters gaan gee. Hulle het toe een week gehad om ’n span te werf, en die kar aanmekaar te sit.”

Dit het toe egter nie heeltemal so

uitgewerk nie.

Sommige van die klusters kon nie ’n span saamvoeg om hulle te verteenwoordig nie, wat gapings in die rooster gelaat het.

Sina Fischer, een van die spanlede van BonnieGFlash, die span wat amaMaties, sowel as die US se internasionale studente se naam hoog gehou het, het gesê: “Die kompetisie is tweede op my lysie van beste tye in Suid-Afrika, bo aan die lys is ’n safari, en dan vandag.”

Hulle het eers die aand voor die kompetisie via Whatsapp daarvan

gehoor, en toe besluit om ’n span saam te stel en een van die beskikbare openinge te vul.

Die oggend is redelik stil gehou, omdat hulle dit as ’n toetslopie wou gebruik vir geleenthede in die toekoms, waar so ’n kompetisie perfek sou kon inpas.

“Ons wil dit dalk deel maak van verwelkomingsweek, dit is ’n ideale geleentheid vir die klusters om die groepgees aan te wakker,” het Maharaj gesê.

Die kompetisie het op Saterdag 13 Oktober plaasgevind.
