he Libertas Private Student Organisation (PSO) will become a co-ed PSO as of 2019. The decision was made final by the Stellenbosch University (SU) Centre for Student Communities (CSC), in partnership with the Libertas House Committee, who thought it the best way to remedy the issue of the drinking culture at the PSO. The all-men’s PSO saw its current state of affairs questioned when photos surfaced in July showing an old boy behaving in a manner that was deemed inappropriate. The photos were anonymously revealed. It is alleged that members of the PSO discharged their loft’s fire extinguisher on the surface of the loft, after which images of male genitals were drawn in the powder. Alistair Seymour, newly elected vice-prim of Libertas, as well as Marcelino Vieira, another member of Libertas, were able to confirm this information. Adriaan de Jong, a first year Libertas member, commented on the changes the PSO will have to undergo. “It is sad and the men are upset, but after numerous meetings we have all decided that this decision is contributing to the University’s future,” stated De Jong. According to Martin Viljoen, SU’s spokesperson, the University received no notice of the fire extinguisher incident, or any of the photos related to the incident. “In fact, it was a decision by the student leaders of the student communities in which the CSC played a collaborative role,” said Viljoen. “The matter of Libertas becoming

a co-ed PSO was not discussed by the SU executive management. To my knowledge the planning is done by the Libertas student leadership themselves,” explained Prof Arnold Schoonwinkel, Vice-Rector of Learning and Training. Seymour emphasised the fact that Libertas is slowly embracing the new change. “The next step that seems to be in the right direction is to become a co-ed PSO. We surely are one of the top men’s PSOs, so it is tough, but change is clearly needed within the PSO,” said Seymour. The new House Committee for 2018/2019 consists out of a total of 12 members – seven men and five women who were chosen and elected by Libertas’s previous House Committee. Together they will become a completely new PSO. Anke Eksteen, newly elected vice prim alongside Seymour, said that the new team are already putting heads together. “A big advantage of us now being a mixed PSO is the introduction of new perspectives, enabling us to think, communicate and plan differently. “We really would like to make all the new members feel welcome next year.” Eksteen said that obstacles will arise naturally during the year to come, but added that the five women on the new House Committee would never have applied if they were not ready for the challenges. “The whole HK group supports each other, and together we can overcome any obstacle.” Although a placeholder name, Jonkershoek PSO has temporarily been put in place. The newly formed co-ed PSO will decide on a name

Association. To report back to the new PSO’s House Committee team, this association will consist of old members, current members as well as a House Committee representative. According Eduart Durr, previous Prim of Libertas, alumni reunions will still take place and none of the old traditions will fall away. “The culture and history of Libertas will be taken into consideration at all times. The alumni will certainly not be forgotten,” explained Durr. Durr further mentioned that

this is to ensure that the 45 years of Libertas history and heritage is not lost or forgotten. The formation of the new PSO will amount to a big task, seeing that 600 new first years will be introduced to the new system in 2019, half of them men and the other half women. “Libertas is one of the most influential PSOs in Stellenbosch,” Seymour stated when saying that although they “started out as a brotherhood” they are now growing into a family.

Alumni careers cafe Ted Talk In partnership with the BA Student Committee (BASC) SU Alumni held their first Careers Café for the year on 29 August 2018 in the Faculty of Arts and Social Science’s building. SU Alumni aims to inform, engage with, and encourage the student body to act as prospective alumni. Careers Café is hosted by the SU Alumni Relations office and invites SU alumna to share their past experiences, successes and how they have navigated through life after graduating.Guest Speaker, Adéle Smith, graduated from Stellenbosch University with a BA in Psychology and German. In a TED styled talk, the SU Alumnus and successful businesswoman shared about her recent move from the corporate to entrepreneurial sphere. Inspired by Simon Sinek, “Working hard for

something you don’t care about is called stress. Working hard for something you care about is called passion.” Smith expresses that only after 20 years did she realise that it was okay, and quite essential, to rediscover what feeds and fuels her passion. 20 years after she first started working, she left it all behind to chase a new dream fueled by the desire for something more than corporate success. “You can be in the right place at the right time, but it is up to you to be open to it,” she said. Gender-neutral bathrooms The topic of gender-neuteral bathrooms has been brought up on campus as a result of an announcement by the Student Representative Council. Leighton September, a 2017/2018 SRC member and current prospective incoming SRC member, who had previously held the position of Head of Communications, confirmed the implementation of gender-neutral bathrooms within various campus facilities. September stated that the implementation of these bathrooms

will not necessarily be immediate, but rather gradual. University management, alongside the SRC, have highlighted that these genderneutral bathrooms will appear in new buildings, as well as those currently being renovated on campus. Furthermore, these genderneutral bathrooms will be built into the older buildings when future renovations take place. With World Suicide Prevention Day on 10 September, and World Mental Health day on 10 October, the Suicide Prevention Campaign organised by the Centre for Student Counselling and Development (CSCD) and the Student Representative Council (SRC) was poignant. This event, which took place on 28 August, consisted of a panel discussion along with representatives from Campus Health and Varsity Sport. Representing Varsity Sport was Cameron Peverett, who outlined the mission of the organisation as being dedicated to the mental health of sportsmen and sportswomen. ‘Speak Up’ was specifically designed for high-performance athletes, and aims to “amplify the voices of those who tend to hide their voices” said Peverett. With the aid of the ‘Speak Up’

Elmarie Kruger, a psychologist at the CSCD, also said that mental health “is an issue that is still stigmatized” and something which needs to be “normalised.” Jason Bantjes, a prominent member

Campus Health also stresses that if you suspect someone of contemplating suicide, it is important to “Pursue the issue and make the individual feel supported. Attention, care and support can overt a crisis, but it is essential that you call for reinforcements.”

#MOVE4FOOD-VELDTOG

Alumni maak planne om honger te beveg CARLA VISAGIE

et die toenemende probleem van voedselsekuriteit op kampus, het die Alumni-kantoor studente betrek in gesprekvoering om ’n volhoubare oplossing te skep om voedsel aan studente wat dit nie self kan bekostig nie te verskaf. Hieruit het die #MOVE4FOOD-veldtog onstaan. Die veldtog het op 20 Augustus op die Rooiplein afgeskop en poog om R10 miljoen in 100 dae in te samel. Die uiteindelike doel van die veldtog is om volhoubare voedselbanke op die Tygerberg- en Stellenboschkampus te vestig, om in die basiese voedselbehoeftes van studente te voorsien. Die organiseerders van die veldtog beplan om die fondse vir dié ambisieuse veldtog grootliks deur ’n eweknie-befondsingsprojek gekoppel aan die Sanlam Kaapstad marathon op 22 en 23 September te bereik. Deur hierdie befondsingsprojek kan individue hulself inskryf vir die Kaapstad marathon met die doel om hul vriende en familie aan te spoor om donasies te maak vir die #Move4Food-veldtog omdat hulle die

The sound of high-heels clicking on the floor of the VV Saal in the Neelsie on a Sunday evening would arouse any student’s curiosity, and the fact that the heels belonged to men shows just how progressive our campus environment has become. On 2 September the VV Saal was the venue chosen by Queen Enigma von Hamburg of the Enigma von Hamburg Empire (EVH) to host her company’s annual High Tea. This event aims to raise funds for charity in the broader Stellenbosch community, while at the same time drawing attention to the annual Stellenbosch Beauty Pageant. The brand EVH is involved with image consulting and modelling, and actively participate in community upliftment. Enigma’s motto, “beauty with a purpose” has inspired her to achieve 75 beauty pageant titles. Welcomed at Sunday’s High Tea were representatives from various Miss SA competitions and national beauty pageant contestants, but the

event was also open to the public. Guests of high esteem were also present, and of these was Miss Zilin Ayoki, the reigning Miss Drag Queen of South Africa. Miss Ayoki was crowned in 2017 as the first Miss Drag Queen SA, with the inaugural event taking place at the Stellenbosch Town Hall. Not only was this the first inauguration of its kind in the country,

but also succeeded in drawing attention to the progressive nature of the wider Stellenbosch community. Von Hamburg said that the Miss Drag SA’s ethos, “drag with a purpose,” “advocates the advancement of LGBTQA+ rights and drag culture.” The pageant is also “a vehicle to educate communities to show respect for diverse sexual cultures.”

Ayoki was a judge of the preliminary round of the Annual Stellenbosch pageant because she “falls under the reign of the EVH Empire.” Ayoki was invited to dress her best and join in the festivities of the High Tea fundraiser. She said that being a judge made her proud to be South African because she “got to see raw talent, and real

people making a difference” to the community. Further, Ayoki stated that the final round of the Pageant will be held in Stellenbosch’s Town Hall on 6 October. Categories vary “from tiny tots to Mrs Stellenbosch, as well as displays of categories like the Ms Gay category, which is always popular because everyone loves a gay pageant.” On the topic of the High Tea, Ayoki explained that contestants lay out themed tables of delicacies in the Hall, which are then judged on presentation, and prizes are awarded accordingly. Although in itself a competition, the High Tea does not contribute to the judging of the final round of the Stellenbosch Pageant. Von Hamburg had the following advice for students struggling with their own identity in a heteronormative society: “We learn that the struggle is bigger than us… that is what I’m doing and we all should be doing; penetrating spaces that demonize us.”

Amendments made to SU Constitution

he Student Representative Council (SRC) approved amendments to the Student Constitution at their meeting on 27 August. “The amendments consist of nonfundamental as well as fundamental changes, and they were made on the basis of comments received from students,” Denisha Padachey, Secretary General of the SRC, said. The SRC would have initially voted on the amendments at their meeting on 22 August, but after resistance from the Speaker of Student Parliament, Anthony Martin Andrews, the meeting

was postponed to 27 August. “It is unfair to ask SRC members to consider changes to a constitution that they haven’t seen. I don’t know what the changes are, but they should be nourished with information,” Andrews said. Approving these amendments means that the updated Constitution will be taken to referendum where students will have the opportunity to vote on it. The referendum will happen over the same online platform as the SRC elections, and this will have the final say whether the updated Stellenbosch University Student Constitution will be approved. If the Constitution should be accepted in the

referendum, chapter 12 and schedule 1 of the Constitution will come into effect on 1 January 2019. The sections related to the Senior Prim Committee will come into effect once the Student Court approves their Constitution. Chapter 4 comes into effect on the first day of the fourth term of 2019, and the remaining provisions will come into effect on 17 September 2018. The amendments include definition changes for terms to be more inclusive, like the definition of “Senior Residence” to mean a “Senior Residence as contemplated in the Policy for Placement in Residences of the University and the management guidelines for the

placement policy.” A definition was added in chapter 2 stating that The Bill of Student Rights must also be supported by the Military Discipline Code.” The Student Parliament section also had changes which were mainly regarding the structure of its members. The Military Academy Student Council, Tygerberg Student Council, Prim Committee and the Societies Council must now take disputes to Student Court and no longer to the SRC, and they may appeal to Appeal Court if refused by Student Court. The Senior Prim Committee was also added to the Bodies Constituted by the Constitution, and accordingly

their Chair will serve as a member on the SRC, while their student body is now regulated by Chapter 8.

This decision taken by the SU Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS) surprised many of its students by its lack of opinion inclusion and discussion. Change hardly occurs overnight. Although it is 4 months prior to the scheduled prohibition of smoking on 1 January 2019, there is much work to be done if this goal is to be achieved. Nevertheless, this is a bold action by FMHS, the outcome of which has the potential to reshape and reinforce perceptions of holistic healthcare.

The idea behind the no-smoking regulations are fantastic on paper. But with that said, on Tygerberg campus a lot must still happen before the focus is led to smoking. The faculty chooses to overpower the students by implementing such a drastic decision, without consulting the students first. Like I said before, the idea sounds amazing. It is extremely impractical though, and would not be easy to implement. A lot of other stuff must be dealt with first. Mental health issues, for example, would be a bigger priority.

But instead it is demanded we abstain from something on our campus. The problem is not about the fact that it is smoking. Rather the principle of the law. We need to make our own decisions and we must face the consequences.

My thoughts: it is a very good concept. Smoking is the leading cause of cancer and it causes and precipitates many other diseases. Thus the less people that smoke, the better our health as a community (for both primary and secondary smokers). However, what is the punishment if one is seen smoking, and why make it ‘illegal’ when you can smoke legally anywhere else publicly?

Students ask for more inclusivity in reses In the past month all the residences at Stellenbosch University underwent a process of selecting a new HK as well as a new prim and vice-prim. During the Caucus, numerous questions were asked about making res a more inclusive place for all cultures. This is what Heléne Leonard gathered from students in Stellenbosch about residence inclusivity.

Cantona James Die taalgebruik is redelik erg. Niemand praat Engels nie. By Huisvergaderings is al die slides van die Huiskomitee in Afrikaans. Die liedjies by socials was ook redelik eksklusief. Dit het veroorsaak dat baie mense nie kan deelneem aan die gees van die koshuis nie. Koshuise is ook nie regtig baie tegemoedkomend nie. Van die tradisies het gevoel of dit op studente afgedwing word.

Lukhanyo Ngamlana All our house meetings are run in English. I have never felt excluded from any of the house meetings. People are mostly Afrikaans when it comes to Pub socials. Nothing is done to make people of colour or English-speaking people more included. If the house maybe considers organising other socials, with a bigger variety of events, it would encourage a bigger variety of people to partake in socials.

My koshuis ag ek definitief nie as een wat teen inklusiwiteit is nie. Daar is wel plek vir verbetering. Mens kan nog heelwat byeenkomste reel, wat inklusiwiteit aanmoedig. Die situasie is reg` om vorentoe te gaan. Daar is wel nog plek wat gevul moet word. Maar soos ek sê, die gevoel in die koshuis is al op die regte plek, vir verbeteringe asook verandering vir meer inklusiwiteit in die koshuis.

Nomzamo Nyoni I find it difficult to feel included. I am an international student and I am part of the queer community. The culture behind “Huisdans” is weird for me because I do not find any interest in paying an exorbitant amount of money just to take a guy to a dance. “Skakels” are only for guys and girls, and once again that does not interest me. My res doesn’t do anything to exclude me, nor to include me.

Micaela Du Plessis We have become a whole lot more inclusive. During last year’s welcoming week I did not feel included, nor excluded. University is strange and a big adjustment. This year, more Afrikaans words were translated. “Skakels” were more group-orientated. This year res is getting better. This year there was a big issue that the music was Afrikaans and African songs were not played enough. It is difficult to include and celebrate all the different cultures.

A tough test week? Get some motivation back to power through

As students our default setting is stress. It may be a season, a feeling or, in extreme cases, a lifestyle. We just can’t get rid of the silent stalker that sneaks up and attacks when we least expect it. Although some stress is healthy, long-term and neglected stress is toxic. We need to take care of our mental, physical and emotional status long before we reach a point of burn-out. There are several ways to cope with stress, but there are also habits we adopt that increase our stress levels. We are awfully familiar with bad coping mechanisms, but we need the reminder.

Here is what not to do 1. Do not feed your stress The most dangerous thing you can do is add to your stress. We do this by constantly analysing situations that have already happened, thinking about events that will happen and worrying about them. Do not overthink – it may be difficult, but train your mind to focus on one event at a time. 2. Do not try to eat your stress away Binge eating or not eating at all is not the way to distance yourself from stress. Your brain will start to associate negative feelings with food and this will alter your normal eating routine. Consuming increased quantities of food can lead to unhealthy weight gain and may cause a decline in your selfesteem, while restricting your body from food can lead to excessive weight loss. Both these extremes could result in an eating disorder. 3. Do not ignore it Avoiding stress only delays the period you have to deal with it and the amount of stress you have to manage. The longer you wait to deal with it, the more the stress accumulates. Do not wait to process it or understand it.

4. Do not go into hibernation Do not isolate yourself completely and use sleep to hide from your problems. Too much of a good thing is bad, and while enough quality sleep is imperative, oversleeping is unhealthy. Too much sleep will leave you in a daze and could result in an irregular conscious routine. 5. Do not allow yourself to be victimised by negativity We cannot control everything, and we have to acknowledge that. We can express our feelings and opinions, but we must not undermine ourselves and our situations. Worstcase scenarios are not elements of realistic, rational thinking. Do not blame yourself for things that do not go as planned, and do not dwell on negative thoughts.

Tips to help you de-stress

1. Breathe: Take time out of your day just to breathe and set your mind at ease. There are several simple breathing exercises one can do to remain calm or just to relax before tackling the day. We underestimate the importance of fresh air and a good deep breath. 2. Pract-er-cise: Put your exercise routine into practice. You do not need to belong to a gym to exercise – nature can be your release. Go for brisk walks, jogs, runs and even hikes with a group of friends to motivate each other and to stay in shape together. Get an app for quick 10-15 minute workouts you can do in the comfort and privacy of your room. Exercise is key to a healthy lifestyle so as to release stress and stimulate your brain. 3. You-time is non-negotiable: Life tends to get a little crazy and sometimes we forget to take care of ourselves. Set out a non-negotiable time that is for you, and you alone, to do anything you want. Go watch a movie, go for coffee, read a book, jam out to your favourite tunes - the list is endless. Just be sure that while you’re

adulting you are also loving yourself. 4. Surround yourself with positivity: To think positive thoughts is not just a saying – it should be second nature. Surround yourself with positive people, positive things and maintain an optimistic perspective on life. Our minds are powerful and if we constantly bombard it with positive stimuli we will be conditioned to think positively. 5. Nap time: Naps save lives, honestly. Students don’t have the best track record of regular sleeping patterns, especially during test and exam season, so nap frequently. Whether it is a power nap or an hour nap, it will give you a boost of energy for the task that awaits you. 6. Say no to procrastination: The moment you have all been waiting for – a student’s best friend and easy fix for dealing with everything. Procrastination creeps in anytime and anywhere, and in the moment it’s good and we can convince ourselves there is time, but all we are doing is distancing ourselves from the problem. Plan ahead and be disciplined in following the plan. Train yourself to bounce back from your distractions, or implement a reward system to motivate yourself. Do three hours of studying and treat yourself with a movie or go for icecream with a friend. After tests, exams and deadlines there is also enough

time to enjoy the things you normally do before such, but without the stress. 7. Adopt healthy eating habits: Limit your quantities but increase your meals per day. It is advisable to have at least six meals per day – three full meals and three snack meals – to fuel your brain and regulate your energy throughout the day. Try and substitute fast food meals with meals you can make at home like homemade pizza and burgers. And most importantly, always stay hydrated. 8. Calling all confidants: Worry and stress can become too much for one person to handle, so don’t stay quiet. Confide in your friends and family so they can be there to motivate and encourage you on your down days. Handling stress together can save relationships rather than pushing people away and becoming distant in stressful times. We all need one another to stay sane. 9. It’s okay not to be okay: You don’t have to have it all together – you are allowed to be a mess some days, but don’t remain there. To avoid

mental or emotional breakdowns, deal with your sadness, anger or frustration as it comes. It is better to face a few small hills individually than to face an entire mountain. Allow yourself to feel, cry if you must, have the chocolate, eat the tub of ice-cream, but then compose yourself and work through the problem. 10. Laugh out loud: Need I say more?

Coordinate your plaids with some earthy tones, the much underrated black denim and your favourite hoodie. You can never go wrong with a hoodie, it’s like mandatory for all students to occasionally rock their goto with an alternate look. This gentleman got the memo, read the memo and schooled the memo. And can we talk about those suedes, definitely takes this look to another level. Bravo, on the plaid. Next year feels? This young man is “just going with the flow” as easy vibes are the way to go.

Bomber Chic Statement pieces are a thing. It can make or break your outfit. This retro lady has clearly mastered the art of choosing the perfect statement. The infamous bomber jacket will never go out of style. You need to have one, and in every colour, just because. How does one do simple but not forgetful? Easy - wear a bold colour or a striking print, and better yet, why not do both, because life is too short to be hesitant about your fashion choices. This look is a must - a purple bomber paired with your go-to neutrals. It’s the perfect balance of hipster meets comfy-chic. C’est oui a moi! Future thoughts? She will live life by the words of Oscar Wilde, “We are all in the gutter but some of us are looking at the stars” Mr. Sleek A touch of mystery it is. Staring off into the distance, this young man clearly does not carry the world on his shoulders. Well at least for the moment. He has all the trends working together in perfect harmony and shows no signs of tacky. Your best grey v-neck and favorite plaid button-up paired with two variations of denim. The jean jacket just does something to an everyday look, and that satchel over the shoulder says “this man has things to do and places to go”. But wait, there is more: this look is rounded off with the perfect leather shoe, fit for an artist. To entertain the mystic nothing tops a good pair of shades.

McFly Every closet needs an iconic denim jacket; it’s written in the rule book of fashion. This is a must have. With a light fade and a rip here and there it instantly sends you through a flash of decade trends. And goes with just about anything, - perhaps a floral shirt and your standard jean. Die twee het nog altyd beplan om saam ’n besigheid te begin en die strooitjie idee het ontstaan toe Matt Kiln vir sy meisie een van hierdie strootjies vir Valentynsdag gegee het. The newly formed music group known as Study Notes made their social media debut two weeks ago on KUKO’s Instagram page. The group performed as the guest artist during the break in both the Semi-finals and Finals of SU Acapella.Study Notes is a music group that was formed by thirteen SU students at the end of 2017. “I don’t know exactly what made us form Study Notes. We were all sitting in Gino’s. We were just a bunch of friends. The conversation led to the type of songs and music genres we like and we all realised that we have the same taste, interest, passion and love for music,” said Hhluma Magodla. The group has a vibrant stage personality, and they kept the audience on the front of their seats while awaiting the results of the SU Acapella Semis and Finals. Study Notes was a good procrastination excuse at first. According to Joshua Matthee, the group formed during the 2017 November exams. They would sit for hours, jamming their favourite songs, improvising and finding their own unique style. The group consists of members: Minienhle Bhutelezi, Busi Bhutelezi, Aya Qina, Esona Mangcaka, Hluma Magodla, Joshua Matthee, Thato Malema, Shaen Mare, Tshepo Modiri, Paul Roux, Cristoff Ferreira, Kurt Marais and Hannes Coetsee. The group does not have one

specifically defined genre - they like to include a bit of everything. The group consists of a wide variety of people and they try to arrange the music accordingly. “The music speaks for, and reflects on, every single member of this group,” says Joshua Matthee. The arrangements also include an input from every member, and according to Hluma Magodla, “Every member tries to put their personal touch into the music itself.”

“We want to procrastinate a bit more during the upcoming November exams.” The performance at SU Acapella included arrangements of “Hurt” by Emeli Sande, “An African Medley” by Minienhle Bhutelezi, and another medley the group calls “Loyal Wolves” which was arranged and composed by all the members of Study Notes. The group is eying to go big – they want to try and become known on a big social platform, and they want to create an audience and bigger name for themselves. Jushua Matthee says that “For us we want to make it a big thing. We want to make it all about the music. We aim to review songs, arrange songs and build future performances. We want to procrastinate a bit more during the upcoming November exams.”

Outgoing SRC: a message from the Chair

he 2018/2019 student leadership election season is in full progress – residences and Private Student Organisations have elected their house committees, and the Prim Committee has elected its Chair and Vice-chair. Faculties have elected their reps and the Academic Affairs Council is in the process of electing its Chair. The Societies have voted for their new leaders, and the Society’s Council is also in the process of electing its Chair. Two of our three campuses are voting for their respective representatives and, on Thursday, the nine Student Representative Committee officials will be unveiled. All these individuals will serve on the SRC – they will represent us on the Council, Senate, Institutional Forum, the Rector’s Management Team, and other ad-hoc structures like Bursaries and Loans, Library Senate, etc. Furthermore, the Student Constitution is in a referendum. This is the most important policy document for our University for at least the next three years. So these may be the most important elections for our generation of students as the Student Constitution will only be reformed in 2021 when most of us will have long graduated. I have served on the SRC as Chairperson for the 2018/2019 term, and I have made numerous addresses on and off the campus – from the caucuses when we ran, and the Chair

THE OUTGOING SRC together with the Rector’s Management Team. election speech, to house meetings in Metanoia, Irene, Helshoogte, Sonop, Serruria, Dagbreek, Monica, the Prim Committee of PSOs, Helderberg, Majuba and more. I made the opening address for all our first year students in Danie Craven Stadium for welcoming period. I have been to other universities, like the University of Cape Town, the University of the Western Cape, and the University of Fort Hare, and have been part of a delegation to meet the Department of Higher Education and Training leadership. In all these tasks and addresses I have stressed the need for an active and involved student body – students who not only elect their leaders, but also hold them accountable once in

office. Students who do not need to be in an elected position in order to have influence. My team and I have done all we could to move campus forward and make it an inclusive space for all. We have had our share of failure and frustration, but we leave office knowing we have done all we could, given the resources we had at our disposal. We leave a campus which is relatively safer than that which we found thanks to our hard-working security guards. We leave office with much more diverse residences as 50% of students in residences are BCIA (Black, Coloured, Indian and Asian). Also, in the 5 374 first years, 38% are BCIA for the first time in 100 years

thanks to the Recruitment Office and active students who go out of their way to encourage more students to apply to study at Stellenbosch University. However, this success brings its own challenges – there is a need to make our residences and faculties more inclusive so all our fellow students can feel at home. We also have a commitment from the RMT that gender-neutral bathrooms will be rolled out across campus, first in the new buildings and in all the refurbished buildings. This will not do away with gendered bathrooms, but rather will increase the offering. The biggest thorn in our flesh, however, was the shuttles services – I must confess am I not at all happy with

the slow progress, but our students in Botmashoogte are picked up at night to study on campus, and are assisted to travel to campus during the day. There is still a need to increase the number of mini-bus taxis in the two routes, and an introduction of pick up points during the day. I hope our successors will continue with these projects. I am very grateful to the Prim Committee Chair and Vice-chair for their commitment to give five to ten parking spaces in each residence for PSO students – especially those who are carpooling. We need more of these innovative approaches in order to deal with our transport and parking challenges. I, therefore, humbly ask you to spare a minute to vote in the SRC elections and vote for the Student Constitution as it is the right thing to do. Finally, thanks to Wian, Denisha, Zander, Thandile and Ben – the SRC Executive. Enkosi to Tevarus, Bobby, Minettes, Euwen, Hannah, Captain Ratchy and Mmasa – the SRC exofficio. Meet the election conveners The Election Conveners and the Student Representative Council Elections Committee are responsible for the election process, from the opening of nominations until the elections of the SRC Chairperson. This ensures that the process is in line with the Student Constitution, and therefore enabling a free and fair election. The Elections Team for 2018 includes Maggie Giannakopoulos, Cathelynne Walker, Thoko Mahlangu and Lorenzo Elijah. The Election Conveners, together with the Elections Committee, work closely with the Student Governance Department, IT Student Information Support Systems and various university departments. The election process is a complex one, and requires efficient and effective execution. There is a lot of

blood sweat and tears, especially when the nominations had to be re-opened, allowing an opportunity for more students to participate in the SRC elections application process. In return this affects the elections schedule, meaning re-booking of caucus venues, transport and catering at the last minute. Keeping the caucuses can bring pressure to the Elections Committee as the Committee tries to ensure that the new SRC is elected before the outgoing SRC leaves office. During caucuses students can get to know the candidate through a question and answer session. Student attendance at caucuses are unfortunately low, which can be attributed to low interest in student politics. There is a need to increase

awareness and to adapt the structure of caucus to increase voter interest and to change the passive student to an active one. I believe that it is up to the SRC in office to promote their governing structure during the year in order to get people more active in student affairs. Many on campus do not know the role of the SRC and this should change. The SRC is the highest student governing body and holds great powers to change this campus for the better, in order to create an inclusive, vibrant and effective student body. It is therefore in student interests to vote on candidates they feel will serve their interests the best in order to vote in a reliable and hardworking SRC. Regards Magdalene Giannakopoulos

ie Courtyard Café bestaan nou al vir bietjie langer as ’n jaar en het stadig maar seker sy vorm aangeneem deur herstelwerk en veranderings aan te bring. Dit is ’n gewilde uithangplek vir studente wat soontoe gaan vir die lekker kos, lekker musiek, lekker boetiekbier, en natuurlik die weeklikse Trivia-aand op Dinsdae. Menige verjaarsdae en partytjies is ook al daar gehou. Mark Darling, die geleentheidskoördineerder, asook ander bestuurders, Duan Fitzell, Suné Fitzell en Louwabo Sikhakhane is die span agter hierdie suksesvolle besigheid. Afgesien van al hierdie sukses was daar nog steeds iets wat kort. Soos die kaal winterbome in Victoriastraat met die verandering van seisoene in pers bloeisels uitloop, het Courtyard Café die tyd aangegryp vir iets nuuts. Lente. Daar is geen beter tyd as nóú om ’n nuwe idee bekend te stel nie. Suid-Afrika se huidige ekonomiese krisis dui op ’n groot nood vir nuwe entrepreneurs. Craft beer, sunny days, great people and even better music. Sound like your vibe? Then you definitely want to head over to Stellenbrau in Stellenbosch on Saturday 15 September for the second leg of the Breaking the Borders event series. Breaking the Borders is a threelegged event series, hosted by the dynamic female duo Flying Llama Productions. The event series is scheduled for the next three Saturdays of September in three different locations, and Stellenbosch will host the second event. Breaking the Borders consists of four bands from completely different genres coming together on one stage to rock our socks off. The aim of the event is to promote the diversity of the music scene in Cape Town and its surrounding suburbs Bronwyn Proudfoot and Suné Halderman are the two music enthusiasts at the helm of Flying Llama Productions - an artist management company started in April 2018. These ladies are very passionate about creating an equal and diverse community among the different musicians in Cape Town. Halderman is also the manager of Jackal and the Wind, who are best known for their hits “The Ukulele Song” and “Finding Home”. These Stellenbosch heartthrobs have been rocking our worlds since

2013, and will continue to do so at Breaking the Borders. The band says that they are excited to be associated with this event: “We decided to join the first version of this event series because we’re keen to create and build a platform where we get more people supporting different genres and create a bigger industry. The only way we’re going to create a bigger industry is by starting and supporting events like these.” Also featured on this exciting bill is the emotive Alternative Rock band, BRYNN who are known for their exceptional live performances. Joining them is Androgenius, the band who knows how to fuse RnB and soul with hip hop, funk and jazz better than anyone else to create what they like to call ‘soul hop’. Completing this quartet of musical excellence is Money for Bali, a reggae-funk band who have shredded their way into our hearts. Of course, the student budget is a reality. The problem is: you want to see Jackal and the Wind live, but you also want to save for those pair of sneakers or your overseas trip next year. I get that. The members of Jackal and the Wind get that too, so they have decided to run a competition where they will be giving away free tickets to two lucky fans - score! Just follow these few steps and you might find yourself jamming out to four of Cape Town’s best bands on 15 September without having to delve into your savings:

A golden album launch for Sunset Sweatshop MARIE MJACU

Get excited Stellenbosch, because Aandklas is bringing you another amazing album launch! The four guys from Sunset Sweatshop will head to Stellenbosch to launch their new album Chasing Gold which is sure to be a huge success. The band began with members Ian Heyns and Rossouw Wentzel playing mostly cover music, but they always wanted to do their own thing. They joined forces with Richard Dicks, Duke Negus and Victor Green and Sunset Sweatshop kicked off. With Chasing Gold the band has created 12 feel-good tracks that they hope “will even get your grandmammy tapping her feet!” There’s something for everyone on this album and the energy that Aandklas offers will surely do it justice as “Aandklas is always a party,” says Heyns. The title of the album - Chasing

Gold - was chosen to embody the album’s lively vibe and carefree sound. The band says that they wanted to inspire people to get away from their boring nine to five lives and go after their dreams, passions, good times and love, because those are the things that are worth more than gold. For those of you curious as to what sound you can expect from the band, they describe themselves as going for a new age Paul Simon, Johnny Clegg vibe with some UB40 and The Killers thrown into the mix as well. Get keen Maties, because you’re in for a real treat this Saturday. editorial/redaksioneel By Die Matie is ons altyd daarvan bewus dat ons nie onsself te ernstig moet opneem nie, maar dat die werk wat ons doen van uiterste belang vir ’n demokratiese kampuskultuur is. Hierdie publikasie word deur studente gedryf en ons poog om ons medestudente se beste belange saam te dra. Dit beteken dat ons hoofdoelwit, soos enige ander publikasie, is om kampus in te lig, op te voed en te vermaak. Dit is egter ook belangrik dat hoewel Die Matie Stellenbosse studente ken en dophou; hierdie

studente weet wie by die koerant betrokke is. Dit, glo ek, bevorder nie alleen die deursigtigheid van die koerant nie, maar skep ook ’n toeganklike ruimte vir studente om by die koerant betrokke te raak, omdat die studente kan sien dat studente sélf hier aan die stuur is. Die Matie se fokus sal studentesake bly vir so lank as wat studente hierdie koerant elke tweede Woensdag optel en lees. Dit is daarom belangrik dat studente gemaklik daarmee voel om met die koerant in verbinding te tree.

Ons moedig studente aan om opiniestukke en briewe aan Die Matie se skryf om sodoende ’n deel van kampus te bereik wat moeilik só onmiddellik in persoon sou gebeur. Die Matie is, soos baie ander instellings op universiteit, ’n leerskool en dit vorm ons uiteindelik tot die mense wat ons gaan wees. Daar is ’n bewustheid dat ’n mens nooit werklik volleerd is nie en dat jou interafhanklikheid jou eintlik sterker kan maak. Daar word verstaan dat in enige gemeenskap daar sekere kulturele, intelektuele en morele standaarde is wat gehandhaaf word.

Die Matie se doel sal wees om ’n platform te skep waar studente inligting kan ontvang, maar ook ’n platform waarop studente die geleentheid gegun word om die algemeenaanvaarde oortuigings uit te daag en om deel te neem aan die vryemark van idees. Studente en kampus as geheel kan sodoende krities omgaan met oortuigings, maar ook oortuigings aanpas waar hulle nie teen kritiek weerstandig is nie en beter verstaan waarom sekere oortuigings wenslik is. Ek hoop van harte dat daar geen taboe-onderwerpe sal wees

nie, dat enige argumente welkom is om gedisekteer te word in die redaksionele blaaie en dat argumente eerder as mense aangeval sal word. By Die Matie brand die fakkel nie altyd ewe helder nie, maar sodra ons besef dat ons die pad byster geraak het, sal ons vinnig ons stoute skoene aantrek om die saak reg te stel. Ek sien uit daarna om saam met die res van die redaksie in hierdie nuwe termyn inligting aan kampus te verskaf waarby studente nie slegs kan baat nie, maar waarby hulle ook betrokke kan wees. Ek hoop om van julle te hoor.

Bangbroeke Gorrel dink dat Gorrel se medestudente te papbroek en bang is om hulself vir die posisie van speaker van die Studenteparlement te nomineer. Hoewel Gorrel nie self tyd het om hierdie posisie te vul nie, kan Gorrel dit verstaan. Wie sal nou Anthony se fashion forward skoene kan volstaan? Dit wil vir Gorrel voorkom of hierdie speaker weet wat hy doen en tesame met daardie intimidasiefaktor, is sy Insta nog boonop belaai met foto’s geskik vir Vogue. Maar Gorrel besef egter die belang van hierdie posisie, want wie anders gaan Gorrel teen die SR beskerm? Libertas wie? Gorrel wonder wat tussen die lyne by Libertas aangaan. Dit is vir Gorrel baie vreemd dat

lede van Libertas se HK ’n ander deuntjie sing na gesprekvoering met kampusbestuur. Gorrel dink Libertas word geforseer om twee-slagtig te word, maar dat hulle te bang is om uit te praat daaroor. Perspektiewe Surviving Stellenbosch: A black girl’s guide

am often asked the question: why did you choose to attend Stellenbosch University? People seem to be baffled at the thought that I decided to attend a university that has been characterised by racial and cultural exclusivity since its beginning. Whenever I am asked that question, I give a simple yet eloquent reply. I casually state that my reason for studying at this university is because it forces me to operate outside of my comfort zone. This reply is often met with perplexed facial responses, which usually amount to me elaborating on my statement with one of my favourite analogies or metaphors. The analogy of the Lotus Flower. The Lotus Flower is an aquatic plant that is characterised by its subtle and graceful beauty. Unlike other flowers that thrive in sunlight and fresh rain water, this flower can only grow in the mud and far away from the sunlight. The Lotus Flower only reaches its true beauty when it manages to rise above the water’s surface. The muddy water and harsh conditions amid which the Lotus Flower has to grow can be equated to the general trials and tribulations that one will face at this university. These trials and tribulations are on an

TAMUNODEIN PRINCEWILL academic basis, racial basis, cultural basis, class basis and social basis. Being a university student is already a psychologically taxing journey due to the academic pressures we face daily. When race and gender are added to the mixture, life at Stellenbosch becomes incredibly draining. However, it is these difficult situations, and the manner in which you overcome them, that shape you as a person. For instance, the academic pressures with which we are challenged teach us to be more efficient and effective with our time. In the scenario that we miss academic deadlines we are then taught to embrace accountability as we have to deal with the consequences of our actions. In essence we are being presented with new character traits, or our existing character traits are being strengthened and rejuvenated. With regards to the racial, cultural and class pressures with which the black girl socio-grouping is faced in Stellenbosch, and general society as a whole, our ability to remain resilient through these pressures is what will enable us to overcome these pressures. By overcoming these pressures our pre-existing resilient nature is then reinforced, and we are further

bestowed with the characteristics of patience and courage. Patience is key to remaining sane in a world that constantly undermines your intelligence and beauty. While, on the other hand, courage is important in confronting these trials and tribulations steadfastly. We have established that harsh conditions are important for the Lotus Flower to grow and that it is these harsh conditions that prepare the flower to rise above the water’s surface and bloom. Likewise, as a black girl in Stellenbosch you too need to be able to grow in harsh conditions so that you can overcome the adversity that you face, and rise above the surface in order for you to maximise your full capacity in the way that the Lotus Flower blooms to maximise its beauty. The tale of the black woman overcoming adversity, and finally reaching her glory point, has been told since the beginning of time. These black women grew up in tumultuous times. Times that stripped them of human dignity. Times that sought to label them as inferior beings. Yet even during these times they managed to make a name for themselves and

leave their mark on the world. They too were like the Lotus flower – they developed in harsh conditions and fought their way to the top so that they could BLOOM. Black women like Harriet Tubman who was known for her battle against slavery. Black women like Rosa Parks, best known for her fight for racial equality which sparked the Montgomery bus boycotts of the late 1950s. Black women like Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf – the first elected black female president in the world, and also the first female president on our continent. Black women like Oprah Winfrey who paved the way for the voice of the black female to be heard in a predominantly white media industry.

These women were firm displayers of resilience, courage and patience. They were resilient because they never gave up in fighting their respective battles. They were courageous because they faced their fears. They were patient because they remained strong willed amidst the tumultuous times they were in as they did not let these times define them, nor hinder them from achieving their aims. Like these women, you too can exhibit resilience, patience and courage by making sure you do not let your surroundings limit your greatness, but instead let your greatness be a testament of the limitations you manage to overcome.

Waarom bestaan daar ooit ’n struktuur soos die Studenteraad (SR) en waarom moet studente daarvoor stem? Die SR-verkiesingsproses sowel as die Studenteparlement se sprekerverkiesing is onlangs uitgestel weens ’n gebrek aan kandidate. Die studenteliggaam, bestaande uit meer as 30 000 studente het met ander woorde nie daarin geslaag om minstens nege geldige kandidate vir die SR-verkiesing en nie eers één geldige kandidaat vir die posisie van speaker vir die Studenteparlement op te lewer nie. Die vraag wat gevra moet word, is waarom? Waarom stel studente nie belang om aansoek te doen vir die posisies wat beskikbaar is op die studenteregeringsliggame nie? Kan dit wees dat studente vertroue in hierdie strukture verloor het? Kan dit wees dat studente glo dat hierdie strukture geen wesenlike verskil op beleids- en ander besluite maak nie? Miskien kan dit wees dat studente so gelukkig is met die huidige situasie dat hulle nie belangstel om verandering teweeg te bring nie. Daar is verskeie moontlike redes waarom studente apaties mag wees. My teorie is dat baie studente oningelig is oor die doel en werkinge van hierdie liggame, maar ook dat daar die persepsie bestaan dat hierdie liggame geen wesenlike mag het om besluite wat studente raak te beïnvloed

TIVAN LEAK nie. Min studente weet dat die SR ’n liggaam is wat deur die Wet op Hoër Onderwys, die Statuut van die universiteit en die Studentegrondwet vereis word. Daar stem gewoonlik minder as 15% van US-studente in hierdie verkiesings. Die sagte mag van die SR, dit is die mag wat die SR het om besluite te beïnvloed deur oorredingsvermoë, word dus afgetakel voordat die SR se termyn kan afskop weens lae kiesersdeelname. Verteenwoordig die SR werklik die studente as slegs 15% van studente vir hulle gestem het? Die vraag wat miskien eerder gevra moet word is hoekom die 15% van kampus wel stem? Hoekom sal studente wat die stryd om balans voer tussen akademie, ’n sosiale lewe en slaap nog tyd spandeer om op te lees oor SR-kandidate. Erger nog, hoekom sal studente hulself beskikbaar stel vir hierdie posisies? Indien die status, die honorarium en die CV-krediete nie gepaard gegaan het met posisies op die SR nie, hoeveel studente sou hulself dan vir hierdie poste beskikbaar stel? Studente het ’n reg om nie deel te neem aan verkiesings nie. Studente het ’n reg om hulself nie beskikbaar te stel vir hierdie poste nie. Meeste studente wat in elk geval net drie jaar op universiteit spandeer stel nie belang om deel te neem aan

die morsige en rasbevange wêreld van kampuspolitiek nie. Wanneer studente nie stem nie, stem studente in effek vir die kandidate wat wel verkies word, maar ontneem terselfde tyd die sagte mag van hulle wat verkies sal word. Voordat jy besluit om nie te stem nie; besef dat die SR ’n struktuur is wat wel invloed het en dat daar ’n verskeidenheid van kandidate is wat nader of verder van jou kampus-ideaal verwyder mag wees. Hou in gedagte dat studente wat nie stem nie, nie kan kla oor die uitslag

SASCO Stellenbosch, in collaboration with the SU Transformation Office, hosted Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma on 22 August. The Minister of the National Planning Commission for Policy and Evaluation was mandated to speak on a topic that is dear to my heart – acknowledging womxn’s voices in leadership. I am going to be sharing some of the advice and knowledge this incredible womxn imparted on us during her talk. To erase and edit womxn out of struggle history was one of the key points on which Mam’ Dlamini-Zuma spoke. The Minister noted a trend of struggle history only to acknowledge a few womxn, or no womxn at all, in various historical milestones. The womxn who are acknowledged were in some relationship with men who were in politics as well. Unmarried and queer womxn are often not found in history books. Courageous and intelligent leaders like Charlotte Maxeke are unknown by the general public, but everyone knows of male figures who fought against apartheid. It is shame that in politics the voices of womxn are unheard, and works of womxn are unrecognised only because they are womxn. The manifestations of patriarchy within political spaces is a struggle that womxn in the liberation struggle fought against, and we as young womxn continue to fight. Mam’ Dlamini-Zuma spoke of womxn as pioneers in various fields of expertise. She made reference to Charlotte Maxeke, who was the first black womxn to attain a bachelor of

science, and The Women’s Federation who pioneered non-racialism in leadership. The Minister urged that, as young womxn, we need to unite and organise against patriarchy which seeks to make us second-class citizens in a world of humans who are birthed by the very same womxn. She stressed that the mass representation of womxn in leadership positions is indeed a step forward. As a realist herself, Mam’ Dlamini-Zuma admitted that indeed we do not merely need representation, but we need effective womxn leaders to represent the voice of womxn. – womxn leaders who will only occupy positions with the aim to infiltrate and create spaces for other womxn. As a parent, Mam’ DlaminiZuma expanded on how gender roles are a manifestation of patriarchal socialisation of male and female children. Furthermore, the Minister urged that we become better parents who will raise children to see each other as equals. With every generation comes a generational mission, and ours is gender based violence.

Dié woordkuns-produksie het nie ’n spesifieke genre nie. “In die stuk is daar gedigte wat mens diep laat dink oor die lewe en dan is daar ook ander wat meer tong-in-die-kies is,” vertel sy. Vir Swartz is hierdie digbundel waardevol en alles behalwe vervelig. Die produksie bestaan uit ’n groot verskeidenheid gedigte en het ook nie een spesifieke tema nie. Volgens Swartz is die nuwe rol vir haar uitdagend en onbeskryflik belangrik. “As ek nou doodeerlik kan wees, freak die rol my so ’n klein bietjie uit omdat ek die rol van ’n vorige aktrise vervul. En dis ook my eerste professionele werk as aktrise.” Die res van die akteurs is alreeds volstoom besig met die produksie. Swartz sit met ’n uitdagende taak voor haar: Om tot die beste van haar vermoë, so vinnig as moontlik aan die gang te kom en in te haal. Hulle het Maandag amptelik begin repeteer. “Ek is so opgewonde om met sulke groot ikone van die Afrikaanse teater ’n verhoog te kan deel. Sy het wel ’n vermoede dat die love montage tussen haar en Pretorius ’n hoogtepunt gaan wees. Pretorius was op soek na ’n nuwe aktrise wat die plek van Cathlene Stephens kon oorneem. ie gimnaste van Maties gimnastiek het onlangs by Intervarsity teen die Universiteit Kaapstad (UK) deelgeneem en skoonskip gemaak. Die Maties het eerste gekom teen die Kaapenaars. Hul voorbereiding het elke week ses tot ag ure se oefening ingesluit. Mari van der Westhuizen, die ondervoorsitter van die klub, het gesê dat dit goed was vir die gimnaste wat volgende jaar aan die Wêreld Studentespele gaan deelneem en dat hierdie vir hulle die geleentheid gee om ekstra kompetisie tyd te kry.

“Waarop ons tans fokus, is die Suid-Afrikaanse Gimnastiek Federasie (SAGF) se SA’s en ons volgende kamp,” het van der Westhuizen gesê. Die SAGF bied verskeie prominente gimnastiek kompetisies aan en deur hulle bestaan die moontlikheid om vir die Olimpiese Spele te kwalifiseer. Hul kompetisies is vir gimnaste wat ernstig is oor die sport. Gedurende die Junie/Julie vakansie het die gimnaste deelgeneem aan die Universiteit Sport Suid-Afrika (USSA) se toernooi, wat deur die UK aangebied is. Die Maties moes teen WITS, TUKS, die UK en PUKKE kompeteer.

“Ons het weke lank spandeer aan intensiewe oefening en voorbereiding, veral aan ons Team Event. Spanbou was natuurlik ook betrokke,” het van der Westhuizen vertel. “Ons is trots om te sê dat al die harde werk die moeite werd was, aangesien ons algeheel tweede geëindig het en die Team Event gewen het,” het van der Westhuizen bygevoeg. Twee van die gimnaste het gekwalifiseer vir die Wêreld Studentespele wat volgende jaar in Italië plaasvind. Boat Race and Beyond: What Maties Rowing has been up to in 2018 ADRIENNE VAN DER MERWE

As the Maties Rowing season draws to an end with their last event, known as the RMB Universities’ Boat Race, coming up, ladies’ Captain, Keeley Knutton, comments on their season in retrospect. Maties Rowing has become known as an open and transformative sporting society, or as Knutton adds, “It’s a sport for anybody.” The costly joining fee is as a result of rowing being an expensive sport, which includes necessities such as the maintenance of boats and the renting of a shed. However, this should not discourage students from joining, as a novice programme is being set up for the next season where students get the chance to see if they are fond of the sport at an affordable cost of R300 before they commit for the year. Maties Rowing offers the perfect balance between academia and leisure, as members are free to train from Monday to Thursday in the afternoons between 16:00 and 18:00. During the week they practise on ergo machines, which replicate the movement of watercraft rowing. On a Sunday the team goes up to the dam in order to train on water, and “depending on the season, we get on large-sized or smallsized boats,” Knutton remarks. She goes on to say that training on water is “always amazing,” which is evident if one takes a glance at their Instagram account depicting images that reflect the sentiment of companionship, framed by the vast expanses of water and mountains.

USSA SPRINT REGATTA Maties rowers all smiles with their medals. Considering that the rowing season commences simultaneously with the start of the first semester, and draws to an end with the conclusion of the Boat Race, Knutton remarks that it is a “year-round sport” with a varying style of training: at the beginning of the year, the team trains short, rapid pieces for the main regatta in April, and towards the end of the year, running up to the Boat Race, they do longer, slower pieces. With the Boat Race approaching in two weeks’ time, Maties Rowing is excited as they have two women’s and men’s teams competing. The Boat Race consists exclusively of eight-man boats where the women race four and a half kilometres, and the men race six and a half kilometres. Knutton describes this

interuniversity event, which takes place every year on the Kowie River in Port Alfred, as “an event where everyone takes part, it’s a big gees thing and a lot of fun.” As several universities around the country, each with an extensive rowing culture, compete in this competition, it adds to the event’s excitement. Knutton concludes that, as the captain, she has grown to appreciate the culture and the people that form part of Maties Rowing. “We are closer than a team - we are a family,” she adds. Maties Rowing enables students to grow within a team, while individuals can also excel. Let’s hope that this formula works out in their favour at the annual RMB Universities’ Boat Race.

Dit lyk wel asof die tafeltennis vaardighede reeds van vroeg af in sekere koshuise gekweek word, aangesien Dagbreek Manskoshuis met beide die A-liga en B-liga se eerste plekke weggestap het. Daarmee saam het die dames van Nerina eerste plek in die A-liga en tweede plek in die B-liga geneem. Die mans C-liga is deur Helshoogte se derde span gewen en die dames B-liga se titel behoort aan Lydia 2. Jana Boleslawsky, lid van Nerina se wenspan, het vertel dat hierdie koshuisliga definitief ’n groot aanwins vir die universiteitskultuur is. “Dit skep ’n baie goeie platform vir interaksie met mense, selfs van jou eie koshuis, waarmee jy nie noodwendig andersins te doen sou kry nie,” het

Net twee spelers speel op ’n slag tydens ’n wedstryd, en dit los die res van die span om met lede van ander spanne te sosialiseer. “Dit is ’n baie lekker omgewing en alhoewel dit kompeterend is, het almal om jou steeds gees,” het Boleslawsky vertel. Daniël Claassen, ’n Dagbreekspanlid, stem ook saam dat die toeskouers en atmosfeer bydra tot ’n aangename ervaring. Die tafeltennisliga word weer volgende jaar hervat. aties have played four matches so far in this year’s Varsity Netball competition, and are currently third on the log after losing against Tuks in round three this past Sunday. Going into round three, Maties faced both VUT and UWC in round one and two respectively, and secured convincing victories in both: (96–26) and (76–34). However, Tuks, who lost both their matches in round one and two, were always going to be tough competition, especially considering their track

record against Maties at Coetzenburg. Tuks have never lost against Maties whilst facing them in Stellenbosch and Sunday proved no different. Maties fell behind early in the match and at halftime Maties was trailing 22–33 to the defending champions. Maties, however, managed to fight back and keep the sold-out crowd on the edge of their seats. The home team secured a bonus point for scoring 50 points, and ended off the game 55–60 in Tuks’ favour. It was a different story when Maties faced UJ on Monday, where Maties managed to secure a 63–30 win

over the visitors from Johannesburg. Maties quickly took the lead this time around, and by halftime the score was 28–10 in Maties’ favour. Stephanie Brandt, the Maties goalkeeper, took home the FNB Player of the Match award, while Sasha-Lee Petersen, Maties’ goal defense, was named the Wimpy Moment Maker (picture right). Petersen, who was ruled out of last year’s competition due to a knee injury, explained that it feels “absolutely amazing” to be back in action this year. “Being out with an injury for so long makes you miss the game and

appreciate every opportunity that you get to play,” she said. Petersen also mentioned that there is no such thing as a perfect match and that even though they lost against Tuks, the team’s spirits are high and that they are going back to the drawing board with all that they’ve learned. Looking at her season thus far, Petersen sees the team building whilst going through challenging training sessions, together with strengthened

friendships, as her highlights. She has, however, also set some goals going ahead. “Firstly I would like to play without injury and to enjoy each and every opportunity I get out there. As a team we would like to make the final and win, of course,” she said. Maties will face Pukke and Kovsies in round five and six respectively, both will take place at Coetzenburg on 9 and 10 September.

Twee van Maties se bestes gaan die universiteit in groen-en-goud verteenwoordig. Stephanie Brandt en Nichole Taljaard is gekies om deel van die nasionale USSA-netbalspan te wees. Brandt is tans Maties se verdediger in die Varsity Sportsnetbaltoernooi en is na afloop van Maandag se wedstryd teen UJ as die speler van die wedstryd gekies. Taljaard speel hulpdoel en sy is as die speler van die wedstryd gekies na afloop van Maties se wedstryd teen UWK. “Ek was baie opgewonde en het trots gevoel om ’n geleentheid te kry om Maties in die groen-en-goud te verteenwoordig,” het Brandt gesê. Verder meen Brandt dat haar

insluiting in hierdie span ’n groot geleentheid is om meer te leer en soveel as moontlik ervaring saam met ander afrigters en spelers op te doen. Brandt skryf haar sukses aan Maties se strukture toe. “Maties se afrigters, bestuurders, fiksheid en kondisionering is uitstekend. Ek is bevoorreg om al van my eerstejaar deel te kan vorm van hierdie strukture en daarby te baat,” het Brandt gesê. Sy beoog verder om teen 2023 deel van die Protea-span te wees en om deel te neem aan die netbalwêreldbeker. Brandt is verder ook opgewonde dat Taljaard saam met haar tot die span verkies is. “Ek is baie trots om nie net ’n spanmaat nie, maar ook vriendin, saam met my in die span te kan hê. Ons kan saam nuwe ervarings opdoen en groei

as spelers,” het Brandt verduidelik. Daar is tot dusver sekere hoogtepunte wat Brandt van hierdie jaar beklemtoon. Sy lig onder andere Maties se bronsmedalje by die USSA-kompetisie in Julie uit. “Persoonlike hoogtepunte sluit egter my insluiting in beide die USSA en Brutal Fruit dream teams in,” het Brandt gesê. Brandt koop ook in op haar Matiespanmaats se doelwit om nie net ’n tuisfinaal vir vanjaar se Varsity Sportsnetbalkompetisie te bewerkstellig nie, maar om ook goud huis toe te bring. Die nasionale USSA-span sal 17 en 21 September in Kampala, Uganda teen ander nasionale universiteitspanne te staan kom. Maties is in groep-B en sal dus eerste teen Zimbabwe, Sri-Lanka en Namibië speel.
