Klagtes word aanhangig gemaak by verskillende partye, afhangend of die klagte die fakulteit; studentedienste; of studenteleefomgewing verwant is.

WATER CRISIS
What does Day Zero mean for Stellies? INGRID HEŸDENRŸCH & KATHYRYN VAN DEN BERG
With Day Zero looming over the head of the Western Cape, it is unclear what concrete plans Stellenbosch University (SU) has for when the water runs out in Stellenbosch. Martin Viljoen, SU spokesperson, said “SU has implemented a Drought Response Plan Contingency Committee that are working towards reducing the water footprint of its five campuses.” Danika Pedro, a representative of faculties management who works at the water communication kiosk in the Neelsie, said “Day Zero is actually sooner than expected.” The Western Cape government predicts that Day Zero, which is the day that water will run out in the Western Cape, will be on 12 April. The dam levels are currently 20%. Viljoen pointed out that the depletion of water in Cape Town will not hit Stellenbosch as hard so soon as surrounding areas. “We are not on the same schedule or level as the City of Cape Town.” Our campus will be able to run for three to four months after Cape Town has hit Day Zero according to Pedro. “Half of Stellenbosch’s water is supplied by boreholes which the municipality has drilled,” Pedro said. However, this water cannot be consumed, since the iron levels are too high. “The urgency of conserving tap water for drinking is still a high priority on campus,” Pedro said. Viljoen said that over the past few

THEEWATERSKLOOF Storage level of 13.3% on 29 January 2018 months Facilities Management has started implementing a wide range of water saving initiatives across campuses. “This includes the fitment of efficient showerheads in residences, restrictor aerators on taps, waterless urinals, water replacement units and fittings in toilets. “Electronic water meters are being fitted to measure water use in buildings and detect leaks, and recently several boreholes were drilled, with several more to be drilled during the next few weeks,” he said. At this stage, level 6 water restrictions are in place in Stellenbosch, which comes down to 87 litres of water per person per day.
“The Drought Response Plan Contingency Committee is working closely with researchers and water experts to explore innovative ways of conserving water and ensuring our campus has access to water,” Viljoen said. Pieter Kloppers, head of student communities, said at a mentor training session on 23 January, that the goal is for the entire SU to use 45% less water than in 2015, which was in the predraught time period. “If we don’t, then that is when the real problem starts in terms of restrictions and making it really expensive for us,” Kloppers said. The university has not yet released a contingency plan for when Day Zero hits Stellenbosch.

SINGING THE SHOWER SONG Students of the Rubix cluster gathered to raise awareness for saving water whilst showering. The first years learnt a song that lasts only 90 seconds, which they can sing in the shower to time themselves. Khumo Sono, Rubix cluster convener, said that the intention of the gathering is,” to make first years aware of what kind of community they are walking into. One that cares about water and one that is really trying to do their bit about the crisis.” Residences all over campus are making an effort to save water by doing things such as using buckets in showers and using water saving shower heads.
SU LIBRARY
New library name to “promote transformation” at Stellenbosch History of the JS Gericke Library:
ARLEEN STONE
Although most Maties students rarely refer to the Stellenbosch University’s (SU) main campus library by name, a recent renaming hopes to create change. In an official press release, the university said this decision forms part of a larger effort to promote transformation and the “furtherance of a welcoming culture” at the institution. Students regularly refer to the iconic underground library, formerly known as the “JS Gericke Library”, simply as the “Bib” or the “Library”. In 2015 the SU’s Committee for the Naming of Buildings, Venues and Other Facilities/Premises started a proposed process of renaming, which included input from a task team, led by prof Hendrik Bosman, acting dean of the theology faculty, as well as other staff, student representatives and the Gericke family. With the majority of votes opting for a descriptive rather than a symbolic name or that of a well-known person, the name “Stellenbosch University Library” was chosen. Translations of the name are also given in Afrikaans (“Universiteit Stellies Rage shut down The anonymous posting page on Facebook got shut down for a while after not complying with Facebook’s community standards. After a day or two the page was back up and running again. SU condemned this page.

The university also has five other libraries across its various campuses, namely the libraries for Medicine & Health Sciences at Tygerberg, Engineering & Forestry, Music, Theology (the oldest on campus), and the USBI (Belville Park Campus Information Centre).
October Fees raised Stellenbosch University announced on 11 October that certain students will have to pay more for their studies in 2018. The newly appointed SRC said that they rejected this announcement from the university and they proposed a new model.
The JS Gericke Library was named after the Reverend JS (Kosie) Gericke, who served as Vice-chancellor of the university from 1952 to 1981, the same year construction commenced. It was built underneath the Jan Marais Square (also known as the “Rooiplein”), as there were no other centrally situated building sites available at the time and the university’s management did not want to deface the square with a multistoreyed building.

HOW TO:
Make your res a home away from home Living on campus calls for immediate independence. At first the idea can be thrilling, but at the same time it can be overwhelming. There is no place like home, but with a few tricks your residence room can become more homey, or at least a bit warmer. Rebecca Pitt shows you how. First things first: art Make it, thrift it, buy it… The bottom line is: get it. The art you furnish your room with adds character to your new cosy hub. Sit down and decide: Bohemian? Minimalistic? Sporty? Grunge? Colour coded? An additional tip: When making new friends, remember that if there is no art in their rooms, don’t trust them. Pots and plants On Thursday mornings most Maties are barely alive, so to have something alive in your room might inspire you to get up out of bed. Since it is not allowed to adopt any furry friends, opt for some plants. Plants are multifunctional: they add colour, they produce oxygen (this is especially important for the stuffy res rooms), which lets you conentrate better. A little greenery will make a big difference. Tangible memories Let’s throw you a basic: pictures. This is a no-brainer, but there are ways to mix it up. Instead of bringing photographss from your jol in Plett, rather start with a fresh wall. As the year goes on, add photos of all the memories you make. By the November exams you will have filled that wall with special moments. Of course, this wall will serve as a constant reminder that this is the time you need to be making memories, and sometimes it is okay to fail a tut test… But only sometimes, kids.
Music Be fully equipped for raastye. This is when you are technically ‘allowed’ to make noise in res. Music will be there for you after a long day of tuts, weird lecturers and heated topics on campus. Be sure to get a speaker so that you may find some comfort in your soul music while your mom is watching 7de Laan, too busy to listen to your voicenotes. For good citizen points, get a shower speaker and have those onesong-showers we should all be having. Caffeine craze After welcoming week, Maties will be consuming coffee like their lives depend on it. Coffee is especially important
in the morning, mid- morning, after lunch, and then just before you hit the bib. This excludes the coffee trips to En Route, Hazz, My Brew, Meraki, DCM and Tamaties. Do yourself a favour and invest in a good coffee making station. It’s a great way to make friends, since everyone will want to hang out in your room. (If everything goes well, you might even make a business out of it like that guy in Dagbreek). When it comes down to it, try to make your room as homey and comfortable for you as possible in order to fight the homesickness. Soon you’ll be calling Stellies your home.
HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS But your res room can be a close second if you put a little effort into it
Survive on only microwave meals WIANDA GILLILAND
One of the most terrifying questions you ask yourself long before your first year starts is: “What am I going to eat?” And then there’s the classic: “How am I supposed to make my own food?” Fear not, new Maties, because it is not impossible. By using a microwave cleverly you can dish up delicious and healthy meals that will put En Route’s excuse of a salad to shame. One trip to Checkers and you’ll have breakfast, lunch and dinner for a week. These recipes are merely here to inspire your inner MasterChef, because once you get the hang of it, you will have so much fun cooking and coming up with your own recipes. Add some ingredients, leave some out, go crazy to transform these three easy dishes into what you love to eat and love to make. Breakfast: Mug omelette Ingredients: - 1-2 eggs (depending on the size of the mug) - 2 tbsp milk - 1 slice of ham, diced - ¼ cup baby spinach - 1 tbsp cheese - Salt and pepper to taste Step 1 Whisk the eggs and milk in a mug. Step 2 Add the ham, cheese, baby spinach, salt and pepper. Mix well.
LESS IS MORE If you’re lazy, opt for stylish minimalism
Step 3 Microwave on high for 2-3 minutes. Omelette should have risen and become loose from the sides of the mug. Step 4 Enjoy as is or eat it on a slice of toast.
Variations: Swop the fillings to anything you enjoy in an omelette – diced onion, peppers, feta, smoked chicken. Add some basil pesto or any fresh herb for some extra pizzazz. Lunch: Chicken Couscous Salad Ingredients: - ½ cup couscous - ½ smoked chicken breast, sliced - 1 cup baby spinach/fresh rocket - ¼ cup feta - ½ cup drained canned chickpeas - ½ an avo, sliced - ½ cup rosa tomatoes - Dressing (optional), e.g. 1000 Island sauce or mayo - Salt and pepper to taste Step 1 Boil water. Pour couscous in a mug and cover with boiling water. Cover the mug with a tablecloth or a plate and allow to stand for 2-3 minutes. Use a fork to stir through cooked couscous. The couscous should be fluffy and dry. Step 2 Add couscous to a bowl. Add all the other ingredients. Finish with some salt and pepper and a dressing of your choice.
Variations: Leave out or add anything you like. Cucumber, canned corn, sundried tomatoes, basil pesto, more cheese, some leftover chicken schnitzel. Anything goes! You can also leave out the couscous and put the fillings in a wrap. Dinner: Baby Marrow Spaghetti Bolognaise Ingredients: - ½ pack of baby marrow spaghetti (available at Woolworths Food and Checkers’ veggie sections) - ½ jar of bolognaise sauce (or any pasta sauce) - Salt and pepper to taste Step 1 Place the baby marrow spaghetti in a bowl and microwave on high for 1 min 30 seconds. Step 2 Add the sauce on top of the baby marrow and microwave for a further 1-2 minutes, until the baby marrow is cooked. Step 3 Add salt and pepper to taste, mix the sauce with the baby marrow and enjoy! Variations: add some smoked chicken and/or cheese. It’s going to take a few practise rounds to start making your own food like it’s second nature, but keep at it and you won’t be sorry a few months down the line. Remember, if all else fails, readymade meals at Spar are also a thing.
Deal with a roommate LISA DE CLERCQ
While for some first years the idea of having a roommate can be quite exciting, others may find it terrifying. Here are a few tips on being a good roommate (or surviving a bad one). Sleeping habits While 10pm could mean bedtime for one, another might find it a great time to start tuning their ukulele. Be considerate in your ways to avoid conflict that could arise from this. Earplugs can be a worthwhile investment; while open curtains, a bedside lamp and an eye mask are good at keeping disturbing light to a minimum. Studying routine A desk lamp could also come in handy in the case of differing study routines. However, you may find that studying in a different place than your room could be a good idea. If your roommate’s work load differs from yours, studying in the Library/SS/Cluster hub could lessen the temptation of binge watching series with your roommate. Tidiness If you and your roommate both don’t mind the stale smell of mould from a two-week-old unwashed yogurt bowl, good for you. Also no judgement. On the other hand, if you are a bit of a neat freak, but your roomie doesn’t seem to be bothered by furry textures on crockery, you may have some trouble. Conflict in this area can be resolved
by washing dishes together or by leaving the dishwashing water in the sink and convincing your roommate to wash his/her dishes directly after you “to save water”. Also, don’t just leave your stuff lying around. Your mom is not there to pick it up. And girls, be mindful of those pesky hair that always end up all over the floor.
Sharing The struggle of a student budget can be real, so sharing things like clothes and food with your roommate could help you both to save some cash. Taking turns to buy milk, salad ingredients or other fast-perishables could save money. Of course, it is important to communicate with regards to sharing as not everyone likes sharing their personal belongings.
Social life It may happen that you and your roommate have different friend groups. An agreement that keeps social encounters outside the room can help avoid conflict with regards to this. However, being friendly when your roommate’s friends are in the room won’t hurt and chances are you may end up liking them.
Overall, communication is a key survival strategy. Talk about something that is bothering you immediately. When things are out in the open the room will feel much more spacious. And you never know, your roomate might be your new best friend.

Your coffee culture starterpack
At university you will quickly learn that caffeine plays an important role in getting through those 8AM classes, surviving the long nights before an assignment is due and of course, having quick coffee dates in the Neelsie in between classes. Elodi Troskie shares a few of Die Matie’s favourite coffee shop stops:
To make life on campus just that bit easier for newcomers, we compiled some helpful (or not so helpful) advice given by Matie students on social media:
“Don’t fall for all the cheap food, you will feel it in second year.”
(Terwyl jy by Pulp is, bederf jouself sommer met hul springmielies teen slegs R10).

This one is located in Dorp Street, which is a little further away from campus, making it the ideal place escape the hustle. Owners Mike and Chrisna started this coffee shop and restaurant in 2013 and take pride in making and baking all their products themselves, including roasting their own coffee. Starting this year, they have a new student special on Tuesdays where students get 20% discount when showing their student cards. (Top tip: be sure to try their banana loaf). This is the perfect place for treating yourself to coffee and a healthy lunch when you have some time off.
Surviving on a budget KARA VAN DER BERG
Managing a budget is a frightening challenge at university. Everybody wants to spend money when their bank balances are high. That becomes problematic when you blow your budget in the first week and have to eat two-minute noodles for the rest of the month. Here are some tips on managing your money better so that even if you are a poor student, you won’t have to be a broke one. Food is the expense towards which the majority of your money will probably go. Eating in your residence is affordable and goes onto your student account, so you don’t have to pay for it from your allowance. PSO students can eat at residences which form part of their cluster. COB, the quota used for campus delis, can be used by non-residence students at some places in the Neelsie, like Roman’s, Feathers and Vlambojant. If you rather want to cook your own food, consider splitting groceries with friends. It works out cheaper and most groceries are too much for one person to eat before they expire. Additionally, those pesky rewards cards that cashiers keep asking you about are a great way of getting discounts on toiletries and groceries. Partying can eat away at your budget. Don’t blow your budget on alcohol. Stellenbosch is a student town full of cheap drinks and hundreds of drinks specials. “Cash is king” does not apply to university. You might feel silly paying for a coke with a bank card at first, but avoiding bank costs will ultimately save you a lot of money.
Change your bank account to a student account. Regardless of your bank, these accounts tend to have little to no costs involved. They also come with added benefits. Absa’s student account lets you choose between airtime, a movie ticket, half price on an intercity bus ticket or a food voucher every month. There are various banks in the Neelsie that specifically aim at helping students, so don’t be afraid to walk in and ask. University textbooks are extremely expensive. Avoid buying a book with other people as sharing gets tricky around test and exam times. Pimp My Book in the Neelsie as well as Protea Books buy and sell second hand books which are in great condition and cost much less than new ones. Ask around your faculty or in your res or PSO to find out whether any seniors have textbooks they are needing to sell. Just make sure that they are the correct edition as you don’t want to get stuck with the wrong book. Sell what you don’t need. Facebook pages like Second Hand For Stellenbosch are great for selling clothes, books and other items lying around. Saving money is not always easy, but try to put away a small amount of money every month. Being a poor student is part of the university experience. However, having to ask your parents for more money is humiliating, childish, and unfair to them. You are an adult, so manage your budget like one. (That being said, never be ashamed of asking a store, restaurant or museum whether they offer a student discount.)
De Warenmarkt
De Warenmarkt, on the corner of Ryneveld and Plein Street, is close enough to campus to easily pay them a visit in between classes, but stays open until the evening, making it perfect for an outing after class. De Warenmarkt presents a large variety, providing something for everyone from morning to evening. There is a bakery for breakfast, a restaurant for lunch, smoothies and a waffle menu for dessert, a De Luxe coffee station, an oyster bar and a wine bar. The rustic, artesian interior and friendly staff makes for a cosy vibe. Perfect for getting some work done during the day and staying for a glass of wine afterwards.
Kompanje Kof fie

Residence events to look out for this year
The various residences on campus host a variety of events throughout the year. Here are some of the events which are open to all Stellenbosch students so that you can plan ahead and get amped for 2018. Luke Smith, Jeanine Malan, Arleen Stone and Katherine van der Berg rounded up a list of this year’s events.
Simonsberg
Simonsberg Met 16 February This 56-year-old event is the largest student-organized event in the country. Nearly three thousand people attend Stellenbosch’s own day at the races, dressed in semi-formal wear. Spectators get the opportunity to bet on newcomers and their horses. Afterwards, a live band entertains the audience. Tickets are available online.
Simonstock July Simonsberg hosts a small week-long festival with acoustic performances and a band night. Artists performing at Simonstock range from students to wellknown South African musicians and groups. Students can enjoy quality acoustic performances while they savour some good wine. Another event is Vortex, a popular night for the party animals. Various DJs entertain the crowd which dances the night away.
Metanoia
Fill Up The Grass Mid-August “Metanoia will be packed with gees,” says Lourens van Niekerk, Metanoia’s social HK. There will be a huge party on the lawn in front of the residence. Every student in Stellenbosch is encouraged to come and help #fillupthegrass to make the event a night to remember.
Dagbreek
Quadnaval 10 February 12:00-22:00 The first must-attend event of the year will be held at Dagbreek. Expect a lot of activities, ranging from beer pong to dodgeball. In the evening, a “spectacle of music and dance” will unfold, according to their Facebook event page. Dagbreek invited some of South Africa’s leading artists such as Die Heuwels Fantasties, PHFat and Red Handed. The event will be sponsored by Stellenbrau, so Quadnaval will be the place to be for all beer lovers. Tickets are R100, available online.
Eendrag
Battle of the Bands This competition was started in 2017 by Eendrag to promote musical groups in Stellenbosch. Winners receive a lot of exposure and prizes to give their careers a well needed boost. Check the Facebook page for more information. 21st Century Leadership This is another Eendrag initiative which invites well-know people as speakers to talk about how they became excellent leaders in their various fields. Last year’s event saw speakers such as South African billionaire Jannie Mouton, the award-winning journalist Hanlie Retief, recipient of the NSTF Annual Award prof Nox Makunga, and owner of Stellies Authentic Clothing, Chris Delport. Valentine’s Day Cinema This new edition to the Eendrag social calender, will see a renowned outdoor cinema screening company setting up on Eendrag’s large lawn so that couples can enjoy a romantic movie night under the stars.
Metanoia Legacy Festival September This leadership festival will offer “leadership and innovation for all,” explains Van Niekerk. Students will have the opportunity to learn more about what it means to leave a legacy, and to engage with other students around them. There will also be performances by South African artists.
Helderberg
Jack Is Back’s Party of the Month 14 Febraury (to be confirmed) The first event of the Republic of Helderberg is their pub-opening. Although the event’s name does not hint at its purpose, it is aimed at collecting women’s sanitary products in support of the Pad Drive initiative on campus. Helderberg promises to live up to their reputation of “a good time” by throwing a party at their pub with beer pong tables and their own dance floor. A cash donation of your choice or (preferably) sanitary pads will be required as the entrance fee to the event.
Repfees 24 February Perhaps one of most eagerly anticipated events of the year is Repfees which promises to include a wide range of electrifying acts. Youngsta CPT, The Kiffness, Jerry and the Bandits, Uncle Spike and Medit are just a few of the line-ups that you can expect this February. Tickets will be sold on the Rooiplein a week before their event, so keep your eyes open for men from the Republic.
Wilgenhof
Damestouch This touch rugby tournament in which female residences compete against each other was launched in 1981 and has grown to be one of the most popular events of the year. It is usually accompanied by headlining DJ performances and a lot of crazy, sporty fun.
Kwottie Electro This year, Wilgenhof’s annual Carry Six Packer will take a new shape and form. Teaming up with Woordfees, Wilgenhof has created Kwottie Electro. Kwottie Electro will serve as hybrid between the legendary annual Carry Six Packer parties with the cultural finesse of Woordfees. Although 2018 will be the debut of the Res party, art festival hybrid, the reputation of both these two annual Stellenbosch functions suggest that we can expect a good time. Kwottie Electro is scheduled to take place on 10 March 2018 and will still be held in Wilgenhof. The lineup is yet to be announced. but if prior lineups of these events are anything to go by, Kwottie Electro is sure to rock your socks off.
Helshoogte
Hoenderdag Hoenderdag is one of Helshoogte’s flagship events that takes place during their annual Hoenderweek (a week dedicated to their residence and house symbol, the rooster). This year’s festivities not only includes creative stalls, pumping tunes and a lot of Matie students, but also some important adjustments. Due to the 2018-2020 building project at Helshoogte, the event will take place in the parking area between Helshoogte and Eendrag. The abundance of shade beneath the lush trees will give partygoers the stamina they need for an all-nighter. They have also decided to host the event in support of the Animal Welfare Society of Stellenbosch and Maties Paw. The event will take place on 17 March alongside the Helshoogters, six local DJ’s and the rest of the student body for a six-hour long jol. More information about the event will be circulated on campus during the course of the term. Don’t worry, we’re also wondering why the women’s residences aren’t allowed to party...

tellenbosch has quite the party scene and since so many events happen in and around the area it can be useful to know what to look out for. Vanguard Former Stellenbosch University (SU) student, Dane Hong, wanted to bring something new to Stellenbosch’s night-life scene. “I wanted to bring that Cape Town vibe to Stellenbosch.” Together with the event planning brand, Vanguard, Hong has created a series of themed parties hosted at the Happy Oak. Hong noticed the cliques in Stellenbosch – from the Terrace crowd to the NuBar group – and saw the opportunity to create a diverse and inclusive event.

The goal is to expose people to music they might not awlays listen to. All types of music are played to not only cater to all music tastes but to introduce people to music they aren’t familiar with. The themes serve as a way for everyone to feel equally playful. Past themes include Candy Land Sesame Street and Slumber Party and Hong hopes his events will become an annual tradition in Stellenbosch. “Our events are pure fun,” explains Hong, “at university people grow up too fast. We want to bring out the kid in everyone.” Vanguard have started the year with a bang as they bring us the Get Cultured Festival taking place from the 10th to the 11th of February at Jan Marais Nature Reserve featuring
many local acts such as The Plastics, Christian Tiger School and Lady M. Vanguard is making sure there is something for everything. The Pyschadelic Jukebox In 2012 a group of five music lovers based in Cape Town formed Psych Night, a collective who made it their mission to showcase and celebrate the growing psychedelic movement in South Africa. Psych night events have become increasingly more spectacular and unique as they continue bring International acts such Night beats, The Allah-Las, and The Black Lips to South African shores. In collaboration with Vans SA and the Newlands Spring Brewery, the boys at Psych Night present the second edition of the Endless Daze Festival. In anticipation of the end of year
psychedelic rock festival, during the month of August, Bohemia takes it upon themselves in collaboration with the guys from Psych Night to showcase some of the acts performing at Endless Daze. On Thursdays, Bohemia hosts evenings featuring bands like Medicine Boy, Retro Dizzy, The Valley, Hezron Chetty & the ZugZwang, The Tazers, and Runaway Nuns and many others. These evenings can provide anything between heart racing and face melting rock n roll as well as smooth melodic head bobbing rhythms sure to set the ambiance of the evening. Bohemia continues to keep the rock n roll spirit alive as they showcase some of South Africa’s best up and coming artists. Off Centre In 2016 Stellenbosch student Luke
Hunter started Off Centre, a party that was held at Springboks Bar. Off Centre has considerably grown since the introduction of Stellenbosch students Justin Nel, and Jean-Marc Gtawabuyge. The collective have defined Off Centre as an underground music community that have taken it upon themselves to showcase a unique brand of upbeat, funky Techno and Tech which they felt was not previously available in Stellenbosch. “We just saw a gap in the market for a groovier and uplifting quality of Music in Stellenbosch instead of being forced to drive to Cape Town for really good music.” The music community have hosted three Off Centre events over the last three years as well as being the masterminds behind the local Overtone parties taking place at Courtyard Café. They showcase musical acts but also local clothing brands and illustrators, mostly hailing from Stellenbosch such as “Not Anderson” as well as “San Pedro”. Off Centre is responsible for brining some of the the most exciting International music acts most notably from the exciting tech scenes of Gemrnay. The boys behind Off Centre are desperate to have moving and grooving all over their dancefloors. Be sure to catch them this year as they take us above and beyond anything they have done before.

WHAT THE STELLIES RAGE POSTS WILL LOOK LIKE THIS YEAR
With a new year comes new challenges and conversations happening on campus. There are a few prominent issues that will be sure to create a debate amongst students. Of course, fees and the debate around it won’t die down just because Zuma made a surprise announcement over the holidays. The sustainabilty of the model that is currently being followed, as well as the debate surrounding who should be studying for free will surely be a contentious issue on campus. The education for all versus eduction for the poor debate will
continue to be a sore point for many. KuKo (Kultuur Komitee), the culture committee of the SRC, has also cut ties with the ATKV (Afrikaanse Taal- en Kultuurverening). They did this without consulting the rest of campus first, merely sending a WhatsApp to culture HK’s of the different residences. Whether campus will have an issue with this or if they will let it slide is still yet to be seen. The language debate seems to have settled down for now, with SU’s new language policy being finally approved late last year. Throughout the year it will become
apparant whether SU is completely binded to their new policy, or if it is merely a stand-in for any new policies that might be simmering at the back of the RMT’s minds. Residences will also undergo scrutiny this year. It has become clear that without legitimate justifications for events and practises in residences, “residence culture” will soon undergo radical changes. All of this will of course be overshadowed if Stellenbosch finally hits Day Zero. It seems like to university has no concrete contigency plans in place for
if this day arrives. Whenever asked what their plans are, the university merely refers to the water crisis division of their website. Yet, on this website, there are no clear plans. Even though it is, of course, important to save water and to raise awareness, people want to know what will happen when the water is gone. Saying that the university has a task team working on the matter also isn’t very reassuring, since this task team has presented no plans since they were origanally formed. At the end of the day, amongst all the controversy and issues on campus,
it is important to remember to be a student and have a life. Yes, it is important to stay informed, make your voice known and stand up for what you believe in, but make sure to not do this at the cost of the people around you. Most importantly, don’t let the things that you are unhappy about take over your life. There are new things to worry and talk about every day, but most people only get one shot at a university life and a degree, do not let it go to waste.

gereeld yellow is mellow. Nou wonder Gorrel, of yellow regtig mellow is.

Cato Louw helped newcomers by picking some of campus’s sport stars to share their wisdom.
ato Louw is one of MFM’s most recognisable voices. She has always had a passion for sport and her sport science degree has given her a knowlegeable background, proving advantageous for her career in broadcasting. She was one of MFM’s breakfast presenters in 2016 when the station was awarded with the Best Campus Station at the Liberty Radio Awards. Last year she hosted a lunchtime show named Halftime. The show was completely new on radio, since it was focused on sport only and was presented by a woman. She was honoured with the
Presenter of the Year award last year and the show won the award for Best Full Time Show. She now permanently works for EWN Sport and is the Varsity Cup presenter for Super Sport. Her advice to newcomers is as follows: “New Maties, around every corner of this beautiful town is an opportunity. You just have to have guts to follow it. Try everything, because that’s how you’ll find the thing that makes you passionate and then there’ll be no stopping it.” She also urged newcomers to use their first year status as much as possible when it comes to getting out of trouble.

Sasha has been playing for Maties since 2014 and represented South Africa during the same year as part of the u/23 invitational team. In 2016, she represented SA again as part of the u/21 team. She has also been playing for the Southern Stings from 2015 as part of the Brutal Fruit competition. “You can be a pro make-up artist, but chances are your student card will still look horrible. Just roll with the punches, own the good and bad times. Learn from it, laugh about it, make memories and just be yourself.” Follow her: @sashi_p
Justine is one of Maties’ golden athletes. She has represented SA at numerous international and intercontinental championships. She specialises in 200 and 400 metres. She was part of the 4x400 m relay team that took gold at the African Champs in both 2011 and 2016. She also championed the 400 m at the 2015 World Student Games. Last year she was a semi-finalist in the 200 m during the IAAF. “[My first year] was a challenging year, a year of finding myself and learning to be independent – a year of adaptions.” Follow her: @justine_palframan
Last year she won three silver medals at the Senior National Aquatics Championships, where she was chosen to compete in the Senior World Championships. Then, she competed in the World Student Games. “‘Thunderbolt moments’ are going to happen – where you somehow end up in a situation and have NO idea what’s going on – just laugh about it. Don't be afraid to ask loads of questions as you settle in, be kind and make as many friends as possible, and remember that you can create the type of person that you want to be!” Follow her: @emchelius
Edwill has played for WP at u/16 and u/18 levels. He represented SA at u/18 level as part of the Sevens team. After representing WP again at the Currie Cup in 2015 (u/19), he played for SA as a Junior Springbok in 2016. He also played for WP at u/21 Currie Cup level in 2016 and 2017. He will play an important part in this year’s Varsity Cup competition. “In first year it was difficult getting used to being a studentathlete and balancing my sport and academics. sportomgewing te word.

Basketbal Basketbal is nog redelik onbekend by die US, maar verlede jaar was daar ’n paar eerstes.

Even though we don’t know how the Varsity Cup t-shirts look this year, the competition has already begun. Maties started it of well with a convincing win (3-31) against UJ in the first round last week. Duncan Saal, who scored two tries, was chosen as the Player that Rocks and after the game captain Niel Oelofse said that the team’s preparation this year is the best they’ve ever had. The previous two years didn’t turn out as hoped for Maties, since they played in both years’ finals and missed out on winning the trophy. Maties is currently second on the log behind Pukke who had an enormous score (70-7) against CUT in round one. The next round of the competition will take place this evening at 18:30. Maties will take on Shimlas and they’ll have a home advantage at Danie Craven Stadium.
