Student’s death shocks campus ERIN WALLS

D

uring the first week of the third term tragedy struck Huis Visser men’s resi-

dence.

Leandró Hopley, a first year BCom (Management Sciences) student, passed away after an alleged alcohol related incident.

After a night spent in Huis Visser’s Kingfisher pub he was found unconscious in his room.

“Leandró was found on his side by a HK member around 23:30 who noticed his lips were blue. We understand that he aspirated, and did not choke as previously reported,” Werner de Wit, residence head of Huis Visser, said.

Paramedics apparently spent 40 minutes trying to start his heart again, and he was transported directly to Stellenbosch provincial hospital. He was found to have 6% brain activity and was placed on life support.

De Wit said that all residents are allowed to use alcohol throughout the whole year.

“First years have been allowed to come into the bigger Kingfisher social area all year.

The past Wednesday was the first time they could enter the bar area, where they were welcomed with either a soft drink or an alcoholic beverage,” De Wit said.

“The rest of the evening there was a social event with Isa [residence], where punch was served.

A mentor and friends took Leandró to his room as he was not feeling well, and it is uncertain how much he had to drink.”

De Wit said that over the course of the night HK members and various friends kept checking up on him.

“I called the ER, and immediately they arrived to start CPR until he was stabilised with a pulse and taken to Stellenbosch hospital.

He was then placed on a ventilator and declared brain dead, whereafter machines were switched off on Friday,” he said. De Wit said that he was with Hopley the whole night after the incident.

De Wit said that out of respect, other social events in Huis Visser are cancelled for the next immediate period and would

“urge other residences to do the same”.

Hopley’s death, and the events surrounding it, has reopened deliberations on the much discussed drinking culture in Stellenbosch.

Marcus Knight, a HK member from Majuba, said: “We understand that such a tragedy was caused by drinking practices in residence, and we will thus be scrutinising our own alcohol policy and culture during HK meeting this Sunday. A conversation will be opened with the House wherein our traditions and practices surrounding alcohol will be re-evaluated.”

Brandon Hughes, Simonsberg prim, said: “In general, it may be time for all of us to discuss the implications and possibilities of the current attitude towards alcohol on campus. Whilst drinking is a personal choice, what we can do is make sure that the personal choice made is an informed choice.”

Hopley’s memorial service will be held in Kruiskerk in Stellenbosch on Saturday 3 August.

A video of a Stellenbosch student pushing over shelves and throwing items in an Engen garage in Hatfield, Pretoria has gone viral. The student, who chooses to remain anonymous, claims he was spiked.

In the video, petrol attendants and shop employees are seen watching the man as he throws what seems to be a packet of biscuits at an employee as she is running out of the store.

Towards the end, he throws an entire shelf.

“I was with some of my friends in Mystics in Pretoria, where my two female friends ordered drinks from the bar, which they did not want, so I had them instead,” the man said. “I don’t remember anything after that.”

A close friend of his, who also chooses to remain anonymous, confirms this.

“We ordered two Smirnoff Spins and the bartender took them to the back to open them, which was unusual.

“My other friend took a sip of hers and claimed it tasted strange,” she said, “so instead he drank them.” The video has been shared largely on Facebook and Twitter, with one user responding, “and in today’s episode of white privilege.”

Die Universiteit Stellenbosch (US) het Maandagaand amptelik ’n nuwe skool vir datawetenskap en rekenaardenke by die Stellenbosse Instituut vir Gevorderde Studie (STIAS) bekendgestel.

Die skool beplan om kursusse oor onder meer kunsmatige intelligensie, robotika, die internet van dinge, outonome voertuie, 3D-drukwerk, presisiegeneeskunde en kwantumberekeninge op beide voorgraadse en nagraadse vlak aan te bied.

Enkele modules word reeds deur die skool aangebied as deel van sekere grade, maar die skool beplan ook om die eerste studente vir die baccalaureus in datawetenskap (BDataWet) in 2021 in te neem.

Verskeie nagraadse programme wag nog op goedkeuring en akkreditasie, maar in die toekoms sal die skool programme tot op PhDvlak aanbied.

Wat die skool uniek maak, is dat dit nie aan ’n spesifieke fakulteit of departement verbonde is nie, maar samewerking tussen al die universiteit se fakulteite sal bevorder. Die rektor, prof.

“I was arrested and [I] did spend the night in jail where I woke up. I had a court hearing, however no charges were placed against me,” he said.

According to the owner of the shop, the matter was handled privately and no charges were filed. “The owners of the store were very understanding,” he said. “I paid the full cost of the damages, which amounted to R4000, and I received all the items I threw or pushed over in a box, which I gave to all the employees.”

Fears over Uber’s ride-share scare

I use Uber frequently. Short answer is – yes. But the longer answer is that no form of transportation is completely safe.

Relatively speaking, Uber is arguably the safest form of road transport open to the public.

I can only hope not to be robbed or kidnapped. I think it is a good service that has potential for harm.

I do use Uber frequently. Yes I do think it’s safe to use. It was unfortunate that the hijacking incident happened.

But it does not change my view about Uber.

Crime will always be a problem, especially in this country. It is still a good initiative, but safety measures need to be put in place to prevent such things from happening in the future.

Dis veiliger as om alleen te stap in die donker, maar aan die ander kant is alle vorms van vervoer inherent gevaarlik.

I don’t use Uber too frequently, as I have my own mode of transport [i.e. car] and I am not dependent on Uber at all.

I have sympathy for the Uber drivers that have been hijacked or attacked, along with any other person who might have been affected negatively.

I do think Uber is a good initiative.

Dit is veilig, maar ek het wel al gehoor van situasies waar goed verkeerd gegaan het. Daarom dink ek dit is baie belangrik om self versigtig te wees, en op te let, en nie net aan te neem dit is veilig nie.

Coupons are more than just pieces of paper NICOLE NASSON

STELLUMTHOMBO, a Stellen-

bosch based non-profit foundation, through one of its charity programmes, Straatlig, aims to aid the Stellenbosch homeless population by means of a coupon project. Straatlig collaborated with Heartflow and Stellenbosch Night Shelter to keep Stellenbosch’s dwellers fed, sheltered and warm.

Ruben Scheepers, managing director of Stellumthombo, said the concept of the project came from a street dweller Stellumthombo helped who made them realise the need for coupons. Coupons eliminate the temptation the homeless might have when handling money, especially if they struggle with addiction or manage money irresponsibly. Straatlig was founded in 2004 by a student and started their coupon project in 2016 with the help of Heartflow.

Approximately 4000 coupons have been issued since January this year. Coupons cost R10 and can be bought at participating businesses and residences.

They don’t expire. Once purchased and given to someone in need, a coupon can either be traded in for a blanket at Straatlig’s offices, or for a meal that can be collected at the Bergvliet taxi rank, or a night’s stay at the Stellenbosch Night Shelter. Scheeper said, “[Public response] initially was very slow, but now it’s been amazing.” Scheepers shared their goal for the project to become an alternative economy, which empowers instead of simply giving money which robs homeless people of an opportunity rather than providing them with one. “We had a stall in [Eikestad Mall] on Mandela Day and we approached people to ask whether they are aware of the coupon project and a lot of people were. It became part of the normal way of doing things in Stellenbosch which is what we wanted” Scheepers said.

These coupons could not only provide shelter, but also a meal or a blanket for many homeless people on the street.

Dié Russies-ontwikkelde toep is egter nou in die spervuur oor sy hantering van gebruikers se foto’s en data, met kontroversie oor die toep se privaatheidsbeleid wat onlangs in aanlynsfere losgebars het.

Dit nadat Joshua Nozzi, ’n ontwikkelaar wat by FaceApp betrokke is, getwiet het dat FaceApp al die foto’s op gebruikers se toestelle na die toepassing se “servers” oplaai sonder hul uitdruklike toestemming. ’n Franse kubersekuriteitspesialis, onder die skuilnaam Elliot Alderson, het egter gevind dat die toep slegs die foto’s wat deur gebruikers ingedien word na die FaceApp “servers” stuur.

Hierdie “servers” is in Amerika geleë en nie in Rusland soos eers vermoed is nie. Yaroslav Goncharov, FaceApp se stigter, het aan Forbes gesê dat die maatskappy die foto’s elke 48 uur vanaf die Amazon- en Google-“servers” wat hulle gebruik, uitwis.

Marzelle Bosman, eerstejaar-BA(Maatskaplike Werk)-student, sê: “Ek het eers veilig gevoel, maar toe ek die stories hoor oor die veiligheidsrisiko’s verbonde aan die toep, het ek bekommerd begin raak.”

Jessica Botha, eerstejaar-BA(Sportwetenskappe)-student, sê sy is geensins bekommerd oor die veiligheid van die toep nie.

“Meeste sosiale media platforms het dieselfde voorwaardes, maar ek is bang weens die stories dat die toep dalk mens se identiteit kan makliker kan steel.”

S

tellenbosch students returning from their vacations may have noticed a brandnew mobile coffee shop on one of Stellenbosch’s most busy residential streets. Customers arriving at the Lucky Dice coffee trailer are greeted by the friendly faces of Chris Green and Aidan Scott who serve up a delicious cuppa with some personality. The location of the Lucky Dice coffee trailer remains a secret for now, leaving the responsibility with Stellenbosch students to find them.

Chris is the brainchild behind Lucky Dice coffee and started conceptualising the business in July last year. Since then, the mobile coffee trailer has made a name for itself at several markets and festivals around the Western Cape and bookings can be made for weddings and other events.

Chris is responsible for the finances, management and is also a self-taught barista. After watching a series of YouTube tutorials, Chris took to the coffee machine for practice, and the rest, as they say, is history.

While Chris works his magic on the coffee machine, Aidan engages with customers, serving up banter nearly as hot as the coffee.

When asked about the inspiration for starting this business, Chris explained that he has always had an entrepreneurial spirit and has been

After having enough money saved up from waitering, Chris decided to start Lucky Dice coffee as he felt he understood the coffee business thoroughly.

TOLKIEN’s life work will forever stand as one of the peaks in human imagination.

The movie about his life, however, will stand forever unremembered. Quentin Tarantino puts it well: “[Biopics] are just big excuses for actors to win Oscars”.

Even the most interesting person – if you are telling their life from beginning to end, is going to make a boring movie.”

Sitting through two hours of Dome Karukoski’s bland biopic only made me agree with this quote more.

At its core, the movie is about Tolkien’s relationship with his high school friends, and the creative inspiration their fellowship gave him.

This fellowship should have been one of the themes of the movie, but the writers went too far and made it the central focus of the plot. Yawn.

The end result is a story largely devoid of drama and conflict every five minutes. For all its problems, the film must be commended on its beauty.

Had the film been in more capable hands, the story, act-

ing, and direction would have matched the cinematographer’s work to create something moving and memorable.

But alas, they did not deliver the Ring to Mordor, no, they could not even get it out of the famous Shire.

Not only did they choose to make a movie about a man who lived an uninteresting life, but they chose to focus on the dullest and least consequential years of his life.

This, then, begs the question, why did the studio make this movie? Answer: it’s safe.

Large production companies do not take risks, and a film about a historic and popular figure like J.R.R. Tolkien cannot fail at the box office.

If you’re like me, and wonder why the current film industry is so over-saturated with remakes, sequels, and biopics, look to this risk-averse mentality of studio executives and the smothering effect it has on originality for your answer.

What makes Lucky Dice coffee different from other mobile coffee trailers is their desire to establish a lasting relationship with their customers to ensure recurrent business and repeat events. Chris said, “the company has now developed into something I never thought it

would be”, and explained that being self-sufficient and seeing his hard work materialise into a business with a personality he is proud of has been incredibly rewarding.

Chris also enjoys being able to meet and interact with different people on the job, “between that first interaction and the customer leaving, you kind of feel like you’ve made a friend”, he said.

Being able to brighten up someone’s day through a “smile or a friendly conversation” has been a highlight for Chris.

Chris acknowledges that juggling a new business while studying can be challenging, but included some advice for entrepreneurial students, “the right time to start a business is now or never, it’s always going to be out of your comfort zone. You always think you’ll start a business when you have time. The truth is, either someone else does it before you, better than you or will have more money to monopolise it,” said Chris.

He advises up and coming entrepreneurs to grab opportunities when they present themselves and remain positive while waiting for the “big break”.

WHILE it is the season that swoops many up into the whirlwind of craziness, others are buckling down and becoming silly serious about their academic success. Joining in on all the fun is a part of the university experience, but this is the time of the year that is also critical for the many who are just barely keeping their heads above water academically.

Here is the light at the end of the tunnel for those who no longer know which way is up, but are still fervently trying to turn their academics around.

“Set a big physical goal for yourself or the outcome you’d like to see in your results. Then set mini goals to help you achieve that goal. This gives you a map which helps you stay on track with achieving the main goal. It also allows you to reassess and prioritise your time,” Micaela Jansen, BA (International Studies) student, said. The most promising step seems to be to attend lectures. Make it a mini goal

to get yourself to your lectures and take notes. Even though this may feel tedious, by just attending your lectures you are half way there. “Attending lectures sometimes gets you extra marks,” Catherine McNaught Davis, BA (Language and Culture) student, said. She added, “Break assignments up into smaller pieces to make it more manageable.” Schané Burger, BA (Humanities) student, gives tips in this regard. “Don’t leave notes for just before the test, make weekly summaries and discuss your work with a friend as much as you need to until you understand it,” said Burger. However, if you start feeling as if all these responsibilities combined are becoming overwhelming and it starts affecting your studies, it could be time to re-evaluate where your time goes.

Balance is always beneficial. You should invest in summaries, study dates, and time management; but remember to take a break once in a while. An overworked mind is about as useful as an underworked one.

There was a fight and when I tried to stop them, I ended up being bitten. I still have the mark,” Chanaiwa said.

He also said that customers’ belongings often get stolen in that area around The Square, especially when the clubs and restaurants are overcrowded. “The thieves will enter when it is really full, pretend to be a cleaner and then they pick customers’ belongings and go out.

We try to remember the thief’s face, but when we chase them away, they call us racist.”

Chanaiwa also said that the customers have accused him of stealing their belongings because they cannot remember where they have lost it. “It was very busy one evening and I told the customer I don’t have his order at the moment

VANAF Stellenbosch se strate tot die glansryke skoonheidskompetisie-leefstyl, is Eloïse van der Westhuizen se kinderdrome om aan mej. Suid-Afrika (SA) deel te neem, verwesenlik.

As ’n oud-Matie, is Van der Westhuizen bekend met die studentelewe, na sy in 2016 haar Honneurs BCom in Logistiek aan die US verwerf het. Daarna het sy vir Pep as ’n handelsbeplanner begin werk.

Alhoewel die skoonheidskompetisie baie ver van haar loopbaan in kleinhandel verwyderd is, het Van der Westhuizen genoop gevoel om vir mej. SA in te skryf en het sy, saam met 1800 ander vroue die aanlyninskrywing voltooi. “Dit was ’n rollercoaster, maar elke minuut was dit werd,” het Van der Westhuizen oor die aansoekproses gesê.“Om die meisies te ontmoet [was tot dusver my gunsteling deel].

Ons is waarlik nou ’n susterskap,” sê Van der Westhuizen.

“Terwyl dit ’n susterskap is, is jy hier om te wen, maar die mees belangrike ding is dat jy op jou persoonlike groei fokus.” Van der Westhuizen deel wat haar grootste les tot dusver was: Om met moeilike kritici te deel, veral op sosiale media. “Ek het geleer om nie almal se opinie ernstig op te neem nie, maar om eerder te identifiseer met die mense wat

“Die toekoms is joune om te skep, maar niks gaan gebeur as jy vir alles wag om in jou skoot te val nie,” vertel Van der Westhuizen.

Dag & Nag Clegg: Forever the King of Time Lauren Wesley-Smith & Byron Latham

T

his month saw the passing of one of South Africa’s most beloved icons: The White Zulu – Johnny Clegg. One need only visit De Lapa on any given night of the week, to witness the welling eyes of students as Clegg’s “Impi” begins to play, in order to understand the country’s reverence for the musician.

Clegg’s life was one truly synonymous with the spirit of the rainbow nation. In his youth, several run-ins with the police were a direct result of Clegg’s resistance to the Apartheid era laws which he defied by consorting with black musicians.

The era’s restrictions did not encumber the young musician as he not only learnt to speak Zulu, but also discovered his love for their culture and music during that time.

Clegg was not only a musician, but also an Anthropologist, his love for African and Zulu culture influencing his studies. Some of his lesser known achievements include a French knighthood, a Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) and honorary doctorates from different universities.

His unique music also led to a Grammy nomination and a Billboard music award.

Throughout his life Clegg toured with two groups, that of JULUKA (“sweat”) - himself and Sipho Mchunu, and SAVUKA (“we have risen”), featuring dancer and singer Dudu “Zulu” Ndlovu. Continuing his tradition of supporting the anti-Apartheid struggle he featured at all 46664 Nelson Mandela Aids Awareness Concerts.

Clegg’s passing came a mere eight days after the world premiere

Photo: Georges Merillon of “There was no way back”, a work honouring Clegg’s life that was composed by Arthur Feder and Dr Antoni Schonken, the resident composition lecturers of Stellenbosch University’s Music Department. The work was commissioned for the Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival.

“What struck me during the researching process was that Johnny wasn’t mimicking. He grew up in the culture – he studied it,” Feder said.

“He was an anthropologist, so he took this very seriously. He was part of the culture, and the Zulu community welcomed him in their culture.”

“What became very clear was that for him, it wasn’t a gimmick to sell music. This was something he saw, experienced, and witnessed, and it interested him on such a deep level that

it became his life mission to ‘get into this, know this, and be this’. And in the process, what he ended up with wasn’t Zulu music, South African folk, or pop – it was a weird role of its own, in-between these different things, but it was very clearly him,” added Schonken.

“The big thing was not to try to copy Johnny, or to try film-score his life story. It was obvious from early on that the best thing we could do as artists was to comment on how we understand his work, as the most honest way to celebrate someone’s life.”

With this mindset, some of Clegg’s songs such as ‘Woza Friday’, ‘Impi’, and ‘Scatterlings of Africa’ were deconstructed and rebuilt into the work in ways that may not be recognisable to the listener at surface level.

Die komediant Marc Lottering, Afrikaanse sanger Joe Foster en medeskrywer van die film Kanarie, Charl-Johan Lindenfelder, is onder andere te sien in SKEEF. SKEEF is reeds vanjaar tydens die internasionale “Pride”-maand as ’n vierdelige dokumentêre reeks op Netwerk24 bekendgestel.

die kategorie vir kuns en vermaak benoem en is onder meer erken vir sy baanbrekerswerk met SKEEF. By die Silwerskermfees sal Schwarp ook deelneem aan ’n paneelgesprek wat handel oor die spanning tussen die kerk en die LGBTI-gemeenskap en hoe die “gay-debat” dreig om die kerk te verdeel.

“Ek voel geëerd dat die Silwerskermfees besluit het om ’n soeklig op LGBTI-stories by vanjaar se fees te plaas. Hierdie dokumentêr beklemtoon die lot van soveel mense wat teen gediskrimineer word, bloot oor hul seksuele identiteit. So ek is baie bly dat ons gesprekke hieroor kan vergroot en verhoog,” sê Schwarp.

It was written for a friend [Ndlovu] who passed away, but it was also about finding a new South Africa, and that the old has to die or be left behind in order to find the new. I think that’s the important thing with Johnny.

He was always writing himself into the music. And for South Africa to see a white man writing himself and including Zulu culture in that, I think that was a huge turning point. It opened up a window to see we can actually live together, how we can maintain cultural identity and mix it at the same time,” Feder explained.

“We both agreed that the best way to celebrate Johnny was, again, not to write his life story, but to take the

words that he had said himself and just re-present that. Because those are the things that you’re celebrating: it’s not just his musical style, it’s what he believed and thought and said,” Schonken said.

Originally, Clegg was intended to narrate the work, but his failing health prevented this. Instead the narration was performed by Gloria Bosman, and the composition was met with a standing ovation in the Endler Hall.

“To me it was important not that everyone would be super happy about the work, but that somehow it would’ve communicated to them. And my impression was that it had, and in that sense to me the work was successful,” Schonken said.

For both Feder and Schonken, the process of researching and composing the work was an eye-opener.

“I think you also have to see the project in the context that 25 years ago, this collaboration would not have been possible – we would not have been able to work at the same university, to write music together, or to collaborate in this way, so there’s something personal there that it’s not something we have to think about now. In that way there’s a very personal gratitude to Johnny for that as well – for making this possible.

“We wanted to write this work while he was still alive, so he could experience something of that. His passing was expected, but not that soon. I was shocked because suddenly I realised that the country has lost someone really huge and important, and we’ll never get that back. Also, history has changed – for the better – but the kind of work that he did can’t be done anymore. That was the end of an era,” said Schonken.

‘Fly Away’ with Kirsty Adams Kirsty Adams, composer, singer, songwriter and violinist is a force to be reckoned with.

René Esterhuyse talked to her about her debut EP and music video.

W

ith her extensive musical training (she finished her MMus in Composition at the University of Stellenbosch last year), various musical talents, experiences and passions, Kirsty Adams refuses to be put into a box. She emphasises her appreciation for a variety of genres of music, and explains that exposure to different styles has shaped her into the versatile musician that she is today.

“I was brought up with a strong focus on RnB and Pop music. In high school, I started to dabble in Jazz singing. And then university hit me with a very strong focus on classical music, which taught me the intricacies of music and the theory behind it”.

She marks her childhood experience of films as the source of her other passion: film music.

“I remember watching movies like Narnia when I was younger, and just thinking ‘Wow, this makes me feel a certain way – like anything is possible.’”

She later pursued composition.

Adams admits that it took her a while to find a way to combine her contrasting musical passions.

“After my studies I struggled to figure out what that one thing is that I had to go after, because so-

ciety begs you to do just one thing.

It’s been a journey of self-discovery for me to accept that I have to do all of it.”

And her debut EP, The Wings Beneath My Feathers does just that. She describes the EP, released earlier this year, as “a fusion between pop, neo-soul and classical music, from the approach of poetry.”

By combining elements that she has picked up in her musical training, performance experience and composition career, Adams’s sound is a unique mix. This multi-faceted approach merges her RnB, Pop, Jazz and Classical backgrounds, as well as her love for the sound of string ensembles and the idea of composition. “I’ve often been told that my music sounds more like composition than song-writing,” she says. Adams describes her EP as an intensely personal project. She writes about her own life and experiences and names romantic encounters as one of her main sources of inspiration.

“I have tried to write for other people, but I always end up writing for myself. And I’ve learned that by sharing my own stories and the lessons they taught me, I can help others.” Her philosophical approach to her music is

“I think for a long time in our lives, we put on this façade about who we are. The name kind of articulates a focus on the girl beneath the clothes, the soul beneath the skin,” explains Adams. “And wings represent freedom – I believe there is freedom when you find and accept yourself.”

‘Fly Away’, Adams’s debut music video, released on 15 July, ties in with this overall theme of self-acceptance.

“I wrote this song to empower myself after a romantic encounter that did not work out. The main line throughout the song is ‘I gave you some of my feathers, so that I can grow new ones.’ This represents a kind of shedding of the skin and coming into a better version of yourself.” ‘Fly Away’ also illustrates her unique combination of musical elements.

“I approached this song almost as if it were a movie about myself, so there are a lot of cinematic elements in the music itself – for

example, I wrote the chords in such a way that it would reel you like cinematic music would reel you [in].”

With her multi-faceted approach and fearless, unapologetic attitude, Kirsty Adams is forging her own path.

“I always used to feel like I was too much for people, but I now know that only means that I was in the wrong place. So, I decided to move myself to another place. And it’s the most adrenaline driving thing I have ever done.”

DIE skreeusnaakse stuk Lycra en Petticoats is Saterdagaand aangewys as wenner van vanjaar se Première-teaterfees.

Dit is die tweede jaar wat die fees aangebied word en die tweede jaar in ’n ry wat Carla Smith, Lycra en Petticoats se regisseur en skrywer, aan die stuur van die wenproduksie is. Smith het ook vanjaar die prys vir beste nuwe teks ingepalm.Lycra en Petticoats is ’n metatoneelstuk waarin ’n geselskap probeer om Shakespeare se Romeo en Juliet op te voer, maar weens die akteurs se (komiese) onderlangse twis, ly hierdié aweregse Romeo en Juliet skipbreuk. Wian Taljaard is aangewys as beste akteur in ’n hoofrol vir sy rol in Lycra en Petticoats en die geselskap het saam die prys vir beste samespel ontvang.

Deur die week het altesaam vyftien stukke van Maandag tot Vrydag in die Lab van die Adam Small-teaterkompleks opgetree waarna die drie finaliste

nog ’n speelvlak op Saterdag in die ouditorium ontvang het. Die ander twee finaliste, Monstruasie en Dankie, maar nee dankie! is ook komedies.

Caitlin Wiggle is aangewys as beste regisseur vir Monstruasie. Die stuk handel oor ’n meisie wat besef sy is ’n heks en met die hulp van haar suster probeer hulle hul ouma uit die dood opwek. Daar was verskeie innoverende spesiale effekte in die stuk gebruik wat gesorg het vir ’n uiters vermaaklike vertoning. Shamim Gallie is aangewys as beste aktrise in ’n hoofrol vir haar rol in Dankie, maar nee dankie! Die stuk handel oor drie gesinne wat meeding om as die “perfekte bruin gesin” aangewys te word nadat hulle ’n advertensie in Die Son sien. Die stuk het ook ’n speelvlak by volgende jaar se KKNK losgeslaan.

Elke individuele wenner het ʼn kontantprys van R2 000 ontvang en die wenproduksie het R20 000 ontvang. Die beoordelaars was Hugo Theart, Tara Notcutt, Saartjie Botha en Mareli Pretorius.

DIE derde kwartaal is sinoniem met silly season, huisdans en natuurlik, Acapella!

Met ’n rekordgetal van 31 ensembles wat vanjaar ingeskryf het, beloof die Universiteit Stellenbosch Acapella-kompetisie (SUAC) om een vir die boeke te wees.

SUAC word vanaf verlede jaar deur die Studenteraad (SR) se Kultuurkomittee (KuKo) aangebied en het ontstaan as ’n plaasvervanger vir die ATKV Kleinsêr-kompetisie wat in die verlede plaasgevind het.

KuKo meen dit is belangrik dat die kompetisie konstant verbeter om relevant te bly vir die studente van Stellenbosch. Daarom is daar vanjaar ’n paar veranderinge aangebring aan die reëls.

“Een noemenswaardige verandering is die verkorting van elke groep se optreetyd: van 15–17 minute tot 12–15 minute. Dit is om voorsiening te maak vir die groter hoeveelheid deelnemers,” verduidelik Blaine Josephs, KuKo-voorsitter. ’n Vierde oop kategorie het ook bygekom vir groepe wat onafhanklik van ’n koshuis of PSO wil deelneem.

Cornèl Engelbrecht, leier van Dagbreek se acapella-groep, sien baie uit na die komende seisoen.

“My gunstelingdeel van SUAC is om te sien hoe alles na al die harde werk op die ou end saam-

kom,” sê Engelbrecht.

Hy sê dat Dagbreek baie opgewonde is om hulle program te deel.

“Wat ons groep spesiaal maak is ons verskeidenheid en kombinasie van verskillende genres. Ons sing lekker pop-musiek, ’n beautiful Xhosa-liedjie en selfs ook samba,” sê Engelbrecht.

David Derman en François van Zyl van Eendrag beklemtoon hulle sterk soliste as een van Eendrag se grootste bates.

“Eendrag se ondersteuning is ook altyd huge,” voeg Derman by.

“Mens sien altyd ’n see van oranje in die gehoor en dit is vir ons baie spesiaal.”

Nikita Kohler, lid van Huis ten Bosch se acapella-groep (verlede jaar se nasionale wenners), is ook entoesiasties oor wat voorlê.

“Dit is wonderlik om die kans te kry om op ’n verhoog te gaan en al ons harde werk ten toon te stel.

Ons groep gaan baie energie, passie en opwinding bring,” sê sy.

Die beoordeelaars vir vanjaar se kompetisie is die bariton, Barend van der Westhuizen; die sopraan, Lauren Dasappa; jazz-sangeres, Babalwa Mentjies en komponis, Arthur Feder.

Die eerste ronde vind tussen 9 en 13 Augustus plaas, maar aanhangers kan ’n voorsmakie kry van wat voorlê by die Aca-Trips, wat vandag en môre by Simonsberg, Heemstede, Huis ten Bosch en Irene sal plaasvind.

TOE ek in my eerste eerstejaar in Stellenbosch aangekom het, was ek vreesbevange, om die minste te sê.

Vir ’n gebore Gautenger, wat nog altyd in my ouerhuis gewoon het en gedink het om vir myself te sorg ’n maklike taak is, is ek vinnig ontnugter oor alles wat studentelewe en hierdie befaamde dorp het om te bied.

Stellenbosch het aanvanklik nie vir my tuis gevoel nie. Ek het ietwat uit plek gevoel, en my buitengewone lengte was vir eens nie daarvoor te blameer nie. In my tweede eerstejaar, het ek bietjie meer tuis gevoel, aangesien ek my studie meer geniet het en my nuutgevonde vriendskappe nuwe dieptes begin bereik het. Dit was egter eers in die tweedejaar van my nuwe rigting wat ek vrede in Stellenbosch begin vind het.

Die Matie was gedeeltelik hiervoor te danke. Dit was egter in my tyd by die koerant nie altyd maanskyn en rose nie.

Om saam met uiteenlopende persoonlikhede te werk is meer wisselvallig as wat ons dosente ons ooit in ’n klas kan leer.

Die Matie was my lafenis in van my moeilikste tye.

In my termyn as hoofredakteur van Die Matie is ek veral op nuwe vlakke getoets, nie net professioneel nie, maar persoonlik ook. Uiteindelik is my geluk by dié koerant gewortel

in die mense wat hier betrokke is. Hulle maak dit die moeite werd om tot in die middernagtelike ure vir rekenaarskerms te staar en vroeë oggende in die reën koerante by geboue neer te sit.

Ek sal my tyd by Die Matie vir niks verruil nie.

Dankie aan my hoofredaksie! Julle is die beste keuse wat ek nóg in my loopbaan gemaak het. Al het twee lede ons langs die pad gegroet, dra ek elkeen (selfs die twee wat gegroet het) se bydrae in my lewe vir altyd saam met my. Ek wens vir elke student verbonde aan hierdie universiteit die geleentheid toe om só lekker saam met medestudente te werk en by hulle te leer soos wat ek die afgelope jaar saam met hierdie mense te werk. Ek wens vir die volgende hoofredaksie ’n voorspoedige termyn toe.

Mag julle van ons land se top publikasies scoop en die universiteitsbestuur op hul tone hou.

Ek hoop geen kwessie op kampus is ooit vrygeskeld van bespreking nie en dat julle ope debatvoering sal aanmoedig.

Moenie afwyk in julle strewe daarna om kampus ’n beter plek vir almal te maak nie. Vra vrae en moenie die ooglopende as sulks aanvaar nie. Maak die meeste van die geleenthede wat Die Matie het om te bied en hou die kantoor skoon.

Millennial nation-building CARLI VAN WYK

lection season is in full swing. You may have decided to run for leadership, or you are still thinking about it.

Maybe this will help you to decide.

Not too long ago we had our sixth democratic election. According to the IEC's statistics, the amount of South Africans under 20 that registered to vote has decreased to the lowest level since 1999.

This is alarming and a clear indication of the frustration amongst young South Africans. It’s 2019 and we are still struggling to reap the benefits a democratic system has promised. Have we lost hope and chosen to ignore the suffering amongst us?

Growing up as millennials, we were told that there's no limit to what we can achieve. Call me a millennial, but I still believe this is true. However, I don't believe that achieving "what you want" will come easy or is possible alone.

I look at South Africa and in my millennial mind-set I believe it can be different and change must be brought about. As young people, we are constantly being told the

world is our oyster, but then it is time for us to take responsibility for our world.

Yes, inequality is your problem.

Yes, climate change is your crisis and the problems raised in Parliament are not just the burden of Pres. Cyril Ramaphosa and his fellow politicians. No, South Africa is our platform and opportunity to work together in order to achieve a world we have been promised.

We all have a role to play and an obligation to serve one another without receiving any recognition or gaining anything in monetary value. Of course, the way in which we serve will look different as we have a variety of skills, talents, passions and platforms. The fact of the matter is that we have the responsibility to create the world we wish to live in.

You might only have the capacity to give 10% – be it your time or resources, but your 10% maximised in the best way possible, together with the 5%, 2% or 80% of others, it will have the desired effect. For too long young people have sat quietly and allowed others to play with their future.

Against all odds, we have achieved a democracy without a civil war.

We showed the rest of the world the true meaning of peace and reconciliation. But, today it seems that we’ve forgotten that we’ve been given the opportunity to show the world that reconciliation and change is possible when people work together. We seem to have forgotten about Nelson Mandela's 27 years in prison, the value of Ubuntu and the Soweto uprising of 16 June 1976.

This year I have served as chairperson of Stellenbosch University's SRC. I’ve seen students divided based on socioeconomic status, race and even language, but I’ve also seen students eager and determined to overcome the injustices of the past.

MANY people have remarked on how the discourse around "transformation" (which itself has become more of a meaningless buzzword) can be rather toxic, specifically the dialogue between those who advocate for it and those who oppose it. I'm going to try to identify why this is so, but I have to disclaim that I am, of course — as everyone is — biased. However, I’ll try to be fair.

I have noticed, though I am not the first, that a tendency exists to insist on "rationality" and "unemotionality" in particular when discussing touchy topics. I could argue that those who believe they are being rational are deluded by the comfort of holding an opinion that is compatible with the dominant ideology, but it is much more straightforward to point out that it is unfair to expect of people who have been personally affected by oppressive structures to maintain their composure in the face of extreme injustice.

Another tendency is an unwillingness to engage at all. Of course, no one should be forced into a conversation that they are not comfortable to participate in, but student leaders and activists have to know that it is part of their (our) job descriptions. Still, however, we see events being held that present their premise as a forgone conclusion (e.g., the SRC event at Dagbreek that presented "#MenAreTrash is sexist against men" as fact — which I won't unpack now).

I am aware of the need and I advocate for events that provide a safe space for sharing experiences without fear of being judged for, or having to justify those experiences.

However, no progress will ever be made if we never venture outside our echo-bubbles. I think that, es-

pecially at an academic institution, we need less arrogance and more humility about what we know and what we think we know — we are all, after all, always learning.

Yet, some people insist on denouncing others' arguments as "identity politics" or even "postmodern neo-Marxist conspiracies", all the while not understanding the contents of those arguments.

The misunderstanding of concepts such as Intersectionality, Privilege, Oppression, or even just Racism culminates in an atmosphere that can only be described as a rehashing of the Swart- and Rooigevaar rhetoric of Apartheid.

What I find useful is to find points of agreement — any shared values or interpretations can be used as a point of departure from where actual disagreements can be ascertained. This is necessary, because I've found that we often have intense arguments about things we actually agree on. For example, it would definitely be bad if people were using Intersectionality as an excuse to use their oppression to silence the voices of others or reap some material reward. But this is not what Intersectionality is or what it should be used for, and getting rid of the concept entirely is throwing the baby out with the bathwater. (I could go on for every on of the aforementioned concepts:

postmodernism, Marxism, Racism, Oppression, Victimhood…)

Admittedly, there are two problems with this approach. Encouraging listening and dialogue is only ever useful if both parties are engaging in good faith. This is difficult to ascertain or draw a clear line, but I think we can safely agree that Fascists and Nazis should not be allowed to spread their rhetoric. The second problem is that there are indeed some values that we disagree on. For example, progressives value human psychology (we have unconscious beliefs that are incredibly hard to get rid of), horizontalism (we have to get rid of all unjustified power structures), and systemic analysis (you can't be held accountable for something you don't have control over). Conservatives (or those that want to "conserve" social values) value tradition (this is how it's been done and it has worked until now) and individual responsibility (don't try to blame others for your problems). Trying to bridge this divide will always be a project of compromise.

So I guess my call is for understanding and humility. Instead of accusing people of being demagogues and ideologues, we should recognise that everyone has an ideology they speak from, and that this ideology has been built up through their entire life. With this in mind, I think it would be easier to listen to what people have to say, instead of treating them in bad faith. But then again, we have to also recognise that emotion and anger are valid reactions to injustice, and there are some people whose ideas have already been debunked in the previous century. *Paul is the founding contributor to iLizwi.co.za, host of the upcoming PRAXIS podcast (praxis.tk) and vicechair of QueerUS.

We are one, divided

Many times during this year I have found myself at a place of being deeply discouraged and sceptic about the possibility of nationbuilding.

I have questioned my role in South Africa and have asked myself if it’s even worth trying. But time after time I have seen different students, leaders and staff members all coming to the table with only what they have and agree to engage, learn, unlearn and build. I have realised that building takes courage and boldness.

It's easy, especially for young people, to ignore problems and to stay silent or even complain. However, the question that we have to ask ourselves is: how far will this get us, or rather how far has this gotten us? In his book The Road less Travelled, M. Scott Peck says that what makes life difficult is the painful process of confronting and solving problems. Building a truly free, equal and just South Africa won’t be achieved without confronting our past and our biases. It won't be possible without the hard work of individuals and communities working together. We will experience pain, but without pain we won't experience growth.

Although I have been frustrated, angry and exhausted by what's been happening in South Africa over the last few years, I have also been encouraged by the thousands of students who took action and protested for justice in 1976.

They did not keep quiet or continue complaining. No, they were courageous and dauntless and stood up not just for themselves, but also for the future of their country and the future of subsequent generations of young people. We, as Stellenbosch University students, can help our fellow South Africans build this nation and bring about the change we're yearning for.

We have the opportunity to serve one another, learn from those around us, keep our government accountable and work, not for our own gain, but for a better future for those who will come after us.

May the events of 16 June 1976 encourage and inspire us to take action and help build our country and Stellenbosch University. How will you be building?

There are many studios in and around Stellenbosch, but a studio is not a necessity. The great thing about yoga is that you can practice it anytime, anywhere and you form part of a broader community also aimed at

improving their wellbeing.

Choosing something you actually enjoy will have long-term benefits.

Don’t torture yourself by waking up every morning at 05:00 for an intense bootcamp session if it’s just going to make you miserable.

There are several fitness and health instructors active on YouTube, including our very own Henry le Roux, founder of Organic Calories.

Ultimately, your happiness and health come first, choose something you love doing.

Small changes can make a big difference, as cliché as it may seem – maybe just start by pairing your regular gin with some sugar free tonic.

Maties laat die water spat by Bergrivier-kanomarathon LEMUEL BLIGNAUT

erwyl meeste van ons onder komberse weggekruip het, het ’n paar dapper roeiers die waters van die Bergrivier aangedurf tydens die jaarlikse Bergrivier-kanomarathon.

Met die marathon wat al aan die gang is vanaf 1952, is dit steeds gewild. Dié jaar was dit tussen 3 en 6 Julie en het oor 240km se water tussen die Paarl en Velddrif gestrek.

Maties Canoeing het hul staal gewys en het met drie podiumplekke teruggekeer. Evan Knight, ’n Maties Canoeing-komiteelid, het met die eerste plek in die solo-afdeling vir mans geëindig, na tussen drie en vier maande se strawwe voorbereiding. Die kronkels en draaie van die Bergrivier is vir Knight, wat hierdie uitdaging al drie keer aangepak het, geen vreemde verskynsel nie.

“Dit is ’n unieke uitdaging, en gee ons so ’n goeie basis vir die res van die seisoen dat dit vir ons ’n baie maklike besluit is om deel te neem,” het hy gesê.

“Ek sal definitief weer die Berg doen, dit is ’n hoog aangeskrewe resies.”

van voor wat hulle beleef het, het dinge vir hulle moeilik gemaak.

“Ek berei al die hele jaar voor, nie spesifiek gefokus op die Berg nie, maar meer vir die seisoen wat ons nou ingaan, is die Berg ’n goeie leerskool.

“Ek sal definitief volgende jaar terugwees, en almal wat nuut is aan die sport aanmoedig om deel te neem aan die avontuur, want pret en gesonde kompetisie speel ’n groot rol in resiesjaag.”

Dag drie was vir Oellermann die lekkerste vanjaar. Dit het 75 km van sterk vloeiende water behels met ’n langerige stuk waar hulle die kano’s moes dra. Dit was Oellermann se eerste Bergrivier-kanomarathon, maar beslis nie haar laaste nie. Sy het aanbeveel dat jy jou eerste Bergrivier-marathon as ’n span moet doen, omdat dit jou leer om geduldig te wees, en ook op iemand anders staat te maak.

Alan Houston, die voorsitter van Maties Canoeing, is die derde Matie wat met ’n podiumposisie teruggekeer het. Hy en sy spanmaat, Stewart Little, van Varsity College het derde in die spanresies geeïndig.

Brandon Glover is no one’s bunny MART-MARIÉ SERFONTEIN

I

t’s not every day that you hear of a Matie getting chosen to play for the national team of another country.

On this rare occasion, the star is Brandon Glover, a 22 year old Accounting graduate, originally from Johannesburg.

He came to Stellenbosch in 2016 as a first year and almost immediately started playing for the Maties Cricket team as a fast bowler.

This meant he represented the Maties team at the Varsity Cricket tournament. In that same year he was also selected to represent the University Sports Students Association (USSA) team as they played in the Future Cup. In November of 2016 he signed a contract with the Boland team and has played nine first class matches for them over the past three seasons.

But how did a talented young South African end up in the Netherlands playing cricket?

Glover, who has been playing cricket ever since he can remember said, “A mate of mine with a Dutch

passport had gone over to play club cricket there, and he suggested that I try it out too. I also have a Dutch passport because my mom is Dutch.”

This same friend then passed his number on to the coach of the Dutch National Team, Ryan Campbell, a former Australian cricketer.

Glover’s life changed in February of last year when Campbell got in touch with him and invited him to come and train with the Dutch squad who, at that time, had been in Johannesburg training in preparation for the International Cricket World Cup (ICC) qualifiers.

Having impressed Campbell so much, Glover was also invited to play for the Voorburg cricket club, based in The Hague.

He then had the opportunity, during June and July of last year, to play for the club, as well as train with the Dutch National squad.

It was only in April of this year that he could sign a contract with the Dutch side, after his contract with Boland came to an end.

He has since played for the Dutch side in their series against

Glover said the cricket culture in the Netherlands is very different to South Africa.

“It’s not as popular, but it is picking up.”

As an example, he said that nowhere in the Netherlands is there a stadium comparable to Newlands or Kingsmead.

“But they’re planning to build one, which says a lot about where they want cricket to go.”

Glover says he is excited to be included in the Amsterdam Knights team taking part in the 2019 Euro T20 Slam, held in September, where he will be in a team with cricket legends like Imran Tahir and Shane Watson.
