SRC follows invalid constitution EUGENIE GREGAN & ANÉ VAN ZYL

he Student Representative Council (SRC) of Stellenbosch University (SU) is operating under an invalid Student Constitution. The last approved version of the Constitution, called the 2011 (2.2), was approved by the Student Council, accepted by SU students in a referendum, and approved by the University Council in 2011. However, the SRC is operating under an amended version dated 2014 (2.4). The SRC policy officer, Jeandré Boshoff, confirmed that the 2014 version is “active”. “This was used by the previous SRC’s and was used in court cases by student court,” Boshoff said.

Die Matie received documentation regarding the Student Constitution, in which the former Registrar, Johann Aspeling, confirmed that the Constitution must be approved by the University Council and, according to the SU’s board documents, the 2014 version was not presented to the University Council. When asked if the 2014 version was approved, Boshoff said “they are working on it”, also stating that its use in student court proves its validity. “We are doing research to make sure, but we are not expecting it to be wrong. If something is wrong, it’s only changes made since 2011. But I doubt that this is the case,” he said. Changes have been made to amend clauses which, according to the 2011

Constitution, cannot be valid without a referendum. The important differences between the 2011 and 2014 Constitutions include: Election convener The process of appointing the position of election convener has been amended in the 2014 version to require consultation with the office of the director of the Centre of Student Structures and Communities, or his or her nominated alternative. The 2011 version allows only the executive of the SRC the power to appoint the convener. The 2011 Constitution requires the election convener to organise at least four presentation meetings (caucuses) during election period. The 2014 amendment requires the convener to

organise seven presentation meetings. SRC applications In the 2011 version, SRC applicants are required to provide 10 signatures to second their nomination. However, in the 2014 version, the amount of votes was increased to 200. Term of SRC In the 2011 Constitution, the term of the SRC is specified to start on 1 November and end in October. The term of the students elected to Council is determined by the meetings of the University Council. The 2014 Constitution makes no mention of the University Council, but specifies that the term of the SRC shall be determined by the academic calendar. Furthermore, both the 2011

and 2014 Constitutions required a mandatory referendum to be issued in the year 2016. The referendum would have provided students the opportunity to vote on whether the Constitution should be amended. This referendum did not take place. A request was sent to the university’s Promotion of Access to Information (PAIA) officer on 31 March for access to the last valid Student Constitution. If approved, Die Matie should receive this by 30 April. According to the PAIA manual: “The failure of the information officer to give a decision on request for access to the requester, within a period of 30 days, will be regarded as a refusal of request”.

Are you even a student if you haven’t complained about not having any money at least once a week? Some students at Stellenbosch University have found a way to bypass the struggle of #studentlife, and their answer is simple: entrepreneurship. Sechaba Madisa, the owner of RFA Entertainment, said that his business started because he and a few friends noticed how one-dimensional Stellenbosch’s nightlife is. “We’d always hear people complaining about how Stellenbosch lacks vibe and how they would rather just go to Cape Town. “We figured it be cool if we created an environment with a vibe equivalent to, or even exceeding, the vibe in Cape Town. Then we just proceeded from there. “RFA Entertainment aims to promote hip-hop culture in Stellenbosch by providing a platform for hip-hop culture entities such as artists and clothing brands,” said Madisa According to Tibone Matiki, who runs VFS, a media and entertainment

business, with Sphiwo Mchunu and Brandon Vilakaz, balancing your studies alongside running a business can be tough, but working together can make it much easier. Matiki said that his priority is his studies, but that he works hard to ensure that VFS is always running functionally. “I owe it to myself to see it through and I owe it to Sphiwo to try my hardest to see the business flourish, seeing as he has invested a lot of time and money into it. “We’re currently working with Last Thursdays to take promotional photos and make an after video. “We also have a project coming up with RFA Entertainment that the party-goers on campus will hear about soon.” Despite it being a challenge to be a full time student while running a business, both Madisa and Matiki encourage students not to cross off entrepreneurship entirely. “I feel like if anyone has a dream they should go for it, no matter what it is. If you have something that really inspires you, then try learning it and making money off it,” said Matiki.

The ruling was the result of an application submitted to decriminalise the herb by Jeremy Acton, leader of the “Dagga Party”, and Rastafarian Gareth Prince, who argued that the outdated law was discriminatory against predominantly black users. The application to decriminalise marijuana focuses specifically on the Prohibition of Dagga Act and sections of the Drug and Drug Trafficking act. The sections addressed dealt with what constituted a drug, as well as laws regarding marijuana for prescribed medical use as the only reason for marijuana use. Court (HC) passed legislation making the recreational use and growth of marijuana legal within the privacy of your own home. Three facts should be made clear before using marijuana; firstly, the ruling only applies to the WC. You may not legally smoke marijuana anywhere else in South Africa, except in the privacy of your own home in the WC. Secondly, you may only consume and grow marijuana legally on your own property. This does not necessarily mean you can light up in your residence or any other rented living space you may be using. Thirdly, the ruling clearly states that you may only grow or use marijuana within the boundaries of your own home. For the time being these are the only circumstances in which you may

While everyone is reeling from pre-and post-exam anxiety in November, the top final year and postgraduate students from Stellenbosch University’s seven faculties are chosen to partake in the annual Think Tank. The Think Tank was established through an agreement between Katholieke Universiteit Leuven and Maties, allowing top students to converse with one another over the course of ten months, starting every February. Recently the “Think Tankers” from KU Leuven have arrived to start their residency period and at the end of November, the Maties students will travel to Belgium to take part in delivering the final presentation. Dr van Rooi is the Director of the Frederick Van Zyl Slabbert (FVZS) Institute, which is partly responsible for managing the partnership with KU Leuven, along with the Division for Student Affairs and the Postgraduate and International Office (PGIO). Van Rooi is very enthusiastic about the possibilities and effects of the Think Tank for both universities.

“Through Think Tank you have the opportunity to engage with global and local challenges from an academic and experiential perspective,” he said. Through group discussions, the “Think Tankers” establish an agreedupon theme, which will make up the focus of the programme for that course. By allowing students, not only from different faculties, but from across the world, to take part in this discussion, the universities are paving the way to finding “global solutions for local challenges” by drawing on the diverse perspectives these students can provide for one another. Van Rooi added that it is entirely possible to duplicate the model of the Think Tank and apply it with different universities across the world. “The model allows for intercontinental conversations that place virtually with complementing residency periods. While the model might differ, depending on geographical location and cultural orientation, SU might collaborate with different universities in the future.” For now, the “Think Tankers” are hard at work grappling with the issues

their theme (“Arts and Science – an enduring relationship?”) has provided for them this year. “In the application process for the Think Tank, we were asked to explain how we interpret the theme. For me personally, the theme in particular formed a large part of my motivation to decide to apply for the Think Tank,” said Annegret Muller, a mathematical statistics student from SU. The coordinators of the program run the discussions in a formal setting to create a “respectful environment in which one can easily voice your opinion”, said Venita Januarie, a sociology of education student from SU. Tafadzwa Gurupira, an electrical engineering student from SU, added that the Think Tank is “in a really good position to serve as a breeding ground for reform and innovation. Most of the challenges we are trying to tackle are complex in nature and ought to be approached from not only an interdisciplinary standpoint, but also a multidisciplinary one. I believe that the Think Tank is truly a progressive and productive program.”

Ná sowat drie weke het die rand weer sterker begin vertoon en Gigaba het prof Christopher Malikane, ’n ekonomie professor van die Universiteit van die Witwatersrand as adviseur aangestel. Gigaba sal nou poog om met die graderingsagentskap Moody’s te onderhandel om nóg ’n moontlike afgradering na rommelstatus te verhoed. Volgens prof Johan Fourie, dosent in ekonomie by die Universiteit Stellenbosch (US), het Gigaba egter hierdie taak vir homself bemoeilik deur Malikane aan te stel. ’n Opiniestuk deur Malikane, wat ’n beleid nasionalisering voorstaan, op 7 April in die Sunday Times verskyn het. Die opiniestuk gee ’n verduideliking oor hoe Malikane meen die ekonomie behoort getransformeer te word. Die stuk word in twee dele verdeel, waarvan die eerste deel onder die opskrif “White monopoly capital: myth or reality?” verskyn. In die stuk gebruik Malikane die begrip “wit monopolitiese kapitaal” 58 keer, sonder om dit behoorlik te definieer. Volgens Hasan Essop, ook verbonde aan die US se ekonomie-departement, is “wit monopolitiese kapitaal” ’n emosioneel belaaide begrip. Hy meen die woord “monopolie” word in hierdie konteks verkeerd

gebruik, omdat ’n monopolie verwys na ’n enkele produsent wat die mark bedien. Dit sou dus, volgens Essop, meer akkuraat wees om daarna te verwys as ’n oligopolie, ’n markvorm met ’n klein aantal produsente wat die mark bedien. Die woord “kapitaal” word geassosieer met die kapitalistiese klas, wat volgens marxistiese literatuur, die werkersklas uitbuit. Hy sê die begrip dien as ’n weerligafleier wat geskep is om die aandag van die Guptas af te lei. Hy meen egter hoewel die begrip gebruik word om aandag af te lei, daar steeds ’n probleem met ongelykheid in Suid-Afrika is. Die tweede deel van Malikane se skryfstuk is die gedeelte wat die meeste reaksie ontlok het. Die rede vir die wye reaksie, is omdat sy beleidsvoorstelle, wat nasionalisering en grondonteiening sonder vergoeding as ’n oplossing vir Suid-Afrika se ekonomiese ongelykheid voorstel, teen die huidige status quo van ’n neo-liberale ekonomiese uitgangspunt, ingaan. Malikane se voorstelle word ook nie in diepte bespreek nie, wat baie kritiek uitgelok het. Fourie vergelyk die beleid wat deur Malikane voorgestel word met die beleid wat China geïmplementeer het toe 43 miljoen mense gesterf het. Essop stem saam dat dié vergelyking getref kan word, maar is egter van mening dat Malikane se beleidsvoorstelle, in die opiniestuk, niksseggend is. “Die voorstelle van nasionalisering wat Malikane maak, word nie verduidelik nie en nieteenstaande die korrupsie wat reeds heers, het die regering nie die kapasiteit om alle grond sonder vergoeding in SuidAfrika te onteien, soos Malikane voorstel nie.” Die ministerie van finansies het hulself van die opiniestuk gedistansieer.

Launch of SA nanosatellite a success HAYLEY GRAMMER

ZA-AeroSat, a nanosatellite developed by Stellenbosch University (SU), in collaboration with CubeSpace*, has successfully landed on the International Space Station (ISS) following its launch on 18 April. The South African nanosatellite weighs in at only 2 kg and forms part of an international project known as the QB50 project. The project aims to release 36 nanosatellites known as "CubeSats”. Each CubeSat, smaller than a shoebox, was released from the ISS in order to gather measurements from the lower thermosphere, which is between 200 km and 400 km above Earth. The QB50 project forms part of the atmospheric modelling research carried out by the European Space Agency (ESA) to predict the results of space objects penetrating the earth's atmosphere more accurately. “ZA-AeroSat will be used to demonstrate the aerodynamic stabilisation of a satellite in practical terms for the first time,” said Prof Herman Steyn, head of the project and founder of CubeSpace. “The antennas at the back of the satellite will be used like the feathers of a shuttlecock to give the satellite

The satellite will be transported to the ISS in a Cygnus capsule, which will also take resupplies to astronauts on the ISS. ZA-AeroSat was delivered to a space company in the Netherlands, where it was shipped with the other satellites to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in America. The satellites, now packed in the Cygnus capsule, were then integrated into an Atlas V rocket.

According to Mike-Alec Kearney, CEO of CubeSpace, the ZA-AeroSat mission was originally scheduled to take place last year but was postponed because the whole constellation wasn’t ready. The satellites have been received by astronauts on the ISS and will be released on either 8 or 15 May. Hy sê die bywoning was ook vanjaar goed. “Die gehore het dit baie geniet en ek dink dit is te danke aan vanjaar se lekker tema, a touch of laughter. “Ons het daarmee probeer wegskram van die ernstige, oordramatiese teater waarby almal nie noodwendig aanklank vind nie.” Krige meen ook dat vanjaar se stukke beslis van ’n hoër gehalte as vorige jare was en die kompetisie strawwer. Ander stukke wat ook deurgedring het, is Dagbreek en Monica se Johnny is nie dood nie, Helderberg en Nemesia se Boer soek ’n vrou en Metanoia en Venustia se Up Size. Wat benoemings betref, staan Die Les of Hoekom is die badkamer se

Drie toneelstukke het elk drie benoemings ontvang, naamlik Boer Soek ’n Vrou (beste vroulike byspeler, manlike byspeler en teks), Up Size (twee beste aktrise benoemings en beste teks) en Johnny is nie dood nie (beste aktrise, ensemble en tegnies). Daar is verder twee toneelstukke wat elk twee benoemings ontvang het, naamlik TRONK (beste akteur en teks) en The Most Massive Woman Who Wins (beste aktrise en regie). Die eindstryd vind vanaand by die Drostdy-teater plaas en die eerste vertoning begin om 18:00. Kaartjies sal by die deur teen R50 vir studente en R70 vir die publiek te koop wees. Kaartjies sluit eethappies en ’n glas wyn in.

Dramastudent styg uit NINA FOUCHÉ

Jeandré Spies beskryf homself as “ ’n doodgewone ou”. Die dramagogga het hom in graad een reeds gebyt, toe hy ’n gedig “wat oor hoenders gegaan het” by die Eisteddfod moes voordra. Tydens sy hoërskoolloopbaan het hy ook toneel gedoen en hy meen toneel is die beste manier om leerders uit hulle gemaksone te haal. “Ons skool was baie bekend daarvoor dat ons absurde teater gedoen het, terwyl die bekendste vorm in skole gewoonlik realisme is,” vertel hy. Hy het egter nie altyd baie ondersteuning by sy familie oor sy beroepskeuse ontvang nie. “Daar is mos hierdie ding dat daar nie geld in die kunste is nie.” Hy glo egter dat hy elke oggend wil opstaan en opgewonde wees om te gaan werk en sy ma het besef dat daar nie meer omdraaikans is nie. “My ma is nou my grootste fan en die beste momager,” sê hy. Toe hy boonop in 2014 kans gekry het om New York te besoek, is die bal werklik aan die rol gesit. Hy het direkteurs van Amerika se grootste produksiehuise, onder meer Disney en ABC ontmoet. Ná hierdie ontmoetings het hy met die New York Film Academy kontak

Marion Holm, die bekende aktrise en komediant, het hom gemotiveer om sy studies in Suid-Afrika te voltooi. “Sy het vir my gesê om eers seker te maak dat my fondasie goed gelê is en dan kan ek my vlerke sprei en vlieg.” Hy is baie gelukkig in Stellenbosch en sê hy het mense ontmoet wat sy loopbaan kan verryk. Oor sy televisiedebuut in Die Boekklub mag hy nog nie veel sê nie. “Maar dit was die wonderlikste ervaring wat ek tot dusver in die bedryf gehad het.” Hy sal graag in die toekoms saam met Hans Strydom, wat die rol van At Koster in Binnelanders vertolk, wil werk. Sy doelwit vir sy beroep is eenvoudig: “Ek wil ’n rol skep wat mense se lewens verander of wat ’n verandering in ons wêreld bring. “Ek wil nie net ’n werk kies wat vir my die grootste hoeveelheid geld gaan gee nie.”

Gebruik dit asseblief as jy vanaand na Toneelfees se finale ronde gaan kyk: – Geselsies ’n Vinnige gefluister vir jou naaste is (as dit regtig moet) oukei, maar hou jou gesprekke vir ná die vertoning. Niemand stel belang in jou teorieë oor wat volgende gaan gebeur nie. Moet ook nie vir jou naaste vra wat sopas op die verhoog gebeur het nie. Teen die tyd wat hy of sy dit aan jou verduidelik het, het julle albei iets misgeloop. – Selfoon Ai, wat kan ’n mens nóg sê oor hoe steurend ’n selfoon in die teater is? Project Flamingo help borskankerpasiënte

Ekstra operasies verkort wagtydperk

ospitaalpersoneel van die Tygerberg Hospitaal (TBH) en die liefdadigheidsorganisasie, Project Flamingo, offer hul Saterdae op om vrywillig op borskankerpasiënte te opereer. Hierdie operasies verkort die pasiënte se wagtydperk ná diagnose. Dr Ilna Conradie, ’n spesialiskonsultant by die chirurgie-afdeling van die Universiteit Stellenbosch (US) se Fakulteit van Geneeskunde en Gesondheidswetenskappe, en dr Liana Roodt, stigter van Project Flamingo, organiseer sedert verlede jaar verskeie operasies vir borskankerpasiënte met die ondersteuning van vrywillige mediese personeel. Tygerberg Hospitaal Conradie was verlede jaar opsoek na ’n manier om die wagtydperk vir borskanker-operasies te verkort. Sy het op Project Flamingo afgekom, wat sedert 2010 soortgelyke operasies by Groote Schuur-hospitaal in Kaapstad doen. Die wagtydperk by TBH is tans drie maande as gevolg van die tekort aan hulpbronne wat hierdie hospitale in die gesig staar, naamlik onvoldoende begrotings, ’n tekort aan personeel en beperkte teatertyd. “Dit is ondenkbaar dat iemand so lank ná die diagnose moet wag op behandeling. Ons kan nie sit en wag vir iemand anders om die probleem op te los nie,” verduidelik Conradie. Sy het kort ná haar kennismaking met Project Flamingo met kollegas by TBH gesels en baie van hulle was gretig om te help. Die eerste Saterdag-operasie is in November verlede jaar suksesvol uitgevoer en ’n lys van datums vir 2017 is reeds beskikbaar. Conradie vertel dat sy eerste begin rondvra het onder haar medekollegas by TBH om te hoor of daar ondersteuning sal wees vir so ’n projek.

“Met baie goeie terugvoer, het ons die teaterbestuur genader om die moontlikheid van teaterlyste vir Saterdae te bespreek. “Die hospitaal se bestuur het ná deeglike ondersoek ingestem om die koste van materiale en toelating te dek, aangesien die pasiëntsorg hulle verantwoordelikheid is, terwyl Project Flamingo die teater-verpleegpersoneel se salaris vir die dag betaal,” verduidelik Conradie. Die dokters wat by die projek betrokke is nie net narkotiseurs en chirurge nie, maar ook studente wat gretig is om te assisteer. Al die betrokkens doen die operasies vrywillig in hulle vrye tyd. Conradie glo dat, indien alles vanjaar glad verloop, hulle die wagtydperk met minstens ’n maand sal kan verkort. Project Flamingo “Project Flamingo het, soos meeste goeie dinge in die lewe, begin met ’n goeie bottel wyn en ’n desperate e-pos wat in die regte inbox beland het. Toe ek met die hartverskeurende, uitgerekte en dikwels chaotiese reis van ’n borskankerpasiënt gekonfronteer word, het ek besluit iets moet aan die saak gedoen word,” verduidelik Roodt. Die pasiënte moet dikwels lang wagtydperke trotseer en word dikwels sonder ondersteuning gelaat. Die eenvoudige, effektiewe konsepte van “opvang-operasies” en “troetelpakkies” het hieruit ontstaan. “Danksy Project Flamingo het die wagtydperk by Groote Schuur-hospitaal van 12 weke tot tussen ses en agt weke verminder en ons hoop om binnekort soortgelyke resultate by Tygerberg ook te sien,” sê Roodt. Die pasiënte wat by die projek baat, het nie mediese fondse nie en is van openbare sorg (staatshospitale) afhanklik vir alle mediese behandeling. Hoewel die hospitale die kostes van die operasies dek, moet pasiënte steeds ’n bedrag vir hulle opname en nasorg betaal. Die koste word na gelang van die pasiënt se inkomste bereken en kan wissel tussen R13 en R194.

“Borskanker is so algemeen in ons gemeenskap. “Meeste van ons ken iemand wat daardeur geraak is. “Hierdie projek gee ons almal die geleentheid om ’n werklike verskil te maak,” sê Conradie. Roodt het ook haar kommer oor die kritieke wagtydperke regoor die land uitgespreek. “Meer en meer mense raak afhanklik van die staat vir mediese behandeling as gevolg van die stand van ons land se ekonomie. “Ons kan nie wanbestuur en korrupsie bekostig nie. “Mense se lewens is letterlik op die spel.” Die twee dokters hoop om in die toekoms die projek na ander hospitale in groot stede soos Johannesburg, Pre-

toria en Durban, waar daar ’n drastiese behoefte aan so ’n inisiatief is, uit te brei.

Pantry project supports the needy A lack of food security on campus brought a group of TygerMaties together in order to figure out a solution. Led by Mandy Mpatlanyane, Daisy Montjane and Bohlale Selahle, what started out as a small pantry in Kerkenberg has since expanded to various other residences. Based on good faith and honesty, the pantry is available to all students to take and donate as they need or wish. It runs on donations from students in residences, but when the food runs out there are a number of generous staff members who donate money or groceries out of their personal pockets to keep the pantry stocked. “The pantry also caters to the

specific needs of each residence. We are in the process of determining a system for each residence as no two residences are alike,” said Selahle, TSR member for student wellness. “The TSR also has a pantry that is there in case the residence pantries are depleted,” added Selahle. Nonperishable food items and toiletries can be dropped off at the TSR office in the student centre. Hippokrates rewards second moms Residences of SU are showing their appreciation to their house moms – the women who ensure that business gets done. Hippokrates has started doing just that by creating an initiative that focuses on the appreciation of their residence’s cleaners. “It was sad to see that students didn’t know who their cleaners were or where their cleaners were from. “They didn’t interact with their cleaners. “The cleaners are just as much a part of Hippokrates. They are here every day, they come into our rooms

and into our spaces. “To some people they are like second moms,” said Michelle Pfeiffer, head of the social impact committee. This year the HK decided to make posters for each section that comprised of information regarding who the cleaners of each section were, as well as fun facts about the cleaners, their birthday dates and their favourite Bible verses. In previous years the HK merely asked around for any contribution, but this year the cleaners can expect a surprise at the end of each month.

Feminism brought to the forefront Various discussions covering intersectional feminism, as well as other major issues, take place five times a month at Hippokrates. The talks are facilitated in an effort to raise awareness and promote a free space for sharing and learning. “Last year there was a cry for people stating they never got to talk. “I wanted to create a space for people to say the incorrect things without being attacked,” said Ulindelwe Ratsibe, a medical student at Tygerberg. “Feminism is a cause for fighting for the rights of everyone. It’s a cause that fights for equality by using

equity. These talks are for everyone because everyone is affected somehow.” The discussions currently only take place in Hippokrates and boast a small but eager turnout. However, it is the hope that these types of discussions will spread throughout the campus. Nicola Hunter, a second year medical student, added that the talks create a foundation from which to work from. “One cannot be a true feminist without being an intersectional feminist. We have to engage with topics that involve uplifting everyone, which is what these talks are about.”

Twins undergo cranial surgery Tygerberg Medical Hospital (TMH) will perform the same six-hour-long surgery on identical twins to correct their matching cranial condition. The infant twins, Hope and Blessing Mofokeng, suffer from a rare facial anomaly called sagittal craniosynostosis. Beyond cosmetic deformity, this entails the premature closure of the cranial sutures, which puts pressure on the developing brain. “We will do a total cranial vault decompression and craniofacial remodelling for them, with the hope of giving them both a better future,” said dr Frank Graewe, a surgical consultant at TMH and extraordinary professor in the Plastic Surgery Division of Stellenbosch University (SU). This will be facilitated by Smile Foundation, among others, that together have enabled more than 2000

surgeries. Smile Foundation is a South African NGO that assists children with any type of facial condition to receive free corrective plastic and reconstructive surgery within South Africa. “We are once again so happy to be able to assist these twin girls in helping them receive the necessary surgeries that will change their lives,” said Moira Gerszt, Smile Foundation’s Operations Executive Director. These operations are also made possible by a generous donation from the Clicks Helping Hand Trust, following a 2016 oral healthcare drive. Clicks donated R1 from every Clicks branded oral care item bought during the Oral Health month to the Smile Foundation. Whilst one twin has successfully undergone the operation, the other contracted an infection and is recovering before surgery will commence.

lassification and categorisation with reference to race and gender has been a great source of conflict in South Africa. Some will consider it an act of prejudice, whilst others mark it as an act of empowerment. Chitŝadi Thulare’s demographic characteristics, as well as her respectable leadership skills, typify her as one of the latter group. During September 2016 she was appointed as the first black woman primarius (prim) of Hippokrates. Thulare does not believe in categorising people within the Hippokrates brand; however, in her case, both her race and gender opened the door for diversity. The house, established in 1976, was an all-male residence until 2002, when women were also accepted as residents. “The truth remains, it was extremely difficult for women to be elected in the highest positions. “I think Chitŝadi serves as a role model to women all over campus to believe in their leadership ability,” said Tevarus Naicker, vice-prim of Hippokrates. According to Thulare, women historically didn’t apply or run for prim, not because it was an explicit rule, but because it was custom for the

HIPPOKRATES led by Chitšadi Thulare. older men to apply for this position. “I honestly felt that I wasn’t allowed to apply. “Even though 15 years is a short period, I believe it is still long enough for women to envision themselves in executive positions.” On a social scale, Thulare acknowledged the fact that she would perhaps be at the bottom. “Being black and being a female put me at the bottom of the order,” she said. Yet her motivation remains to inspire every culture or gender group in Hippokrates to pursue their dreams, regardless of their race or sexual orientation. “Anyone, whether she be a Chinese

woman or he be a homosexual white male, can become the prim of the residence,” said Thulare. Her aim for Hippokrates is to sing the song of truth. “The Hippokrates brand is strong. We have had a very particular brand, but I want our brand to be what we actually are inside.” Naicker said that Thulare is not only a leader with a vision, but also a leader of action. “Her fearless actions enable her to change perspectives.” From Thulare’s perspective, the fact that you are scared of pursuing something often provides the reason for why you have to do it in the first place.

TB research helps improve animal health ARLEEN STONE

An animal tuberculosis (TB) research programme could be the answer to providing new insight for improved animal care. The research programme, offered by Stellenbosch University (SU), focuses on advancing knowledge of TB in animals in order to minimise suffering and costs through strategic management of the disease. “Our current projects involve the development of tools for detection of infection in various species. These can be used to ask more complex questions about transmission and risks of disease,” said prof Michele Miller from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, who holds the National Research Foundation’s Research Chair in Animal TB. TB is considered a “zoonotic” disease meaning it can be transmitted between humans and animals.

Humans commonly get infected by prolonged close contact with an infected individual or consuming infected animal products such as milk or meat. However, it is also possible for animals to contract “human TB” through close contact in infected households or by exposure to contaminated food or pastures. “By developing blood-based evaluations, researchers will only have to handle or immobilise animals once for sampling,” said Miller. Currently, the tuberculin skin test is used for testing animals and requires handling twice, three days apart, which can be expensive, risky and logistically challenging for game rangers and medical personnel. About half of the lion population in the southern region of the Kruger National Park (KNP), where the team’s research stretches, have been diagnosed with animal TB.

According to Miller, if an animal is suffering from the disease, the best course would be to euthanise it as there are few choices for managing an animal once it has been infected. This is why the course of action is to develop strategies for preventing the spread of the disease. “There is some evidence to suggest that TB may interfere with a lion’s digestive processes, as well as with the absorption of nutrients into the bloodstream,” said dr Roy Bengis, a state veterinarian. Bovine TB is a global disease and affects many fields such as the conservation of threatened species, food production, eco-tourism and the socioeconomic health of communities that rely on animals. “One of the most important aspects of our research is to increase awareness of TB in animals, provide tools to evaluate risks, and hopefully minimise costs,” said Miller.

Earth Day celebrated at Tygerberg Tygerberg’s Green Committee paid homage to Earth Day through dedicating an entire week to promoting sustainability on campus. Earth Week, originally created by Prof Bob Mash, chairperson of the Green Committee, involved a collaboration of various activities aimed at helping save the planet. The Bucket Launch, held on 20 April, became one of the committee’s major projects and involved the donation of 10 buckets to residences and PSO’s by the Green Committee. These buckets can be used anywhere in the residences to catch grey

water, which can in turn be used to flush toilets or water gardens. “We hope that this gesture will help encourage students to make small lifestyle changes like this to help save water,” said Ascentia Seboko, chairperson of the Tygerberg Student Council (TSC). The Green Committee is aligned with the Global Green and Healthy Hospital Network, which promotes the notion of being a green hospital. The committee is also dedicated to the waste production process, which will essentially help minimise waste that is produced on campus.

n an effort to provide flu vaccinations to 100 TygerMaties, students from the Tygerberg Medical campus and surrounding community thought it best to grab their running shoes. The Friends of MSF (Medecins sans Frontieres, aka Doctors Without Borders) from Stellenbosch University’s (SU) Faculty for Medicine and Health Sciences, have made parkruns and similar outdoor activities a regular affair in order to raise funds and create awareness for the nonprofit organisation. “We decided to engage with the park run in Bellville in order to open up awareness, not only on our campus, but to the general public too,” said Jennifer van Heerden, president of the campus’ Friends of MSF. “Firstly we wanted to raise awareness for MSF.

“Secondly, we as medical students see the importance of vaccinations, and in particular the yearly influenza vaccine.” According to Van Heerden, medics go into the hospital and take in the viruses they naturally accumulate from their environment. She added that these infections may cause the normally healthy students merely a few flu-like symptoms, but said it could be fatal to patients who already have weaker immune systems. “It is our responsibility to protect our patients and as doctors we need to do more good than harm. “Beneficence is one of our key principles in medicine,” explained Van Heerden. Although most of the 500 participants in the most recent run were civilians, and not everyone donated that day, Discovery Health stepped in to

assist the Friends of MSF. Johnathan Broomberg and Ryan Noach, CEO and deputy CEO of Discovery Health respectively, donated R7000 to the Friends of MSF to help the society supply students with flu vaccinations. The vaccinations were provided on a first come first serve basis to fourth year medical students. Van Heerden concluded that they are excited to host similar events in the future and will continue raising funds to create awareness of organisations dependent on volunteers and donations. MSF was founded in 1971 in France by a group of doctors and journalists in the wake of war and famine in Biafra, Nigeria. Their aim was to establish an independent organisation that focuses on delivering emergency medical aid quickly, effectively and impartially.

Freshers Fest, a new and upcoming social event, will allow TygerMaties the chance to have one final jol before work gets hectic and exams start to take over. A collaboration between Huis Francie, Kerkenberg and Osler, the event will be taking place on the TygerMatie rugby field on 5 May. “The DJ line up for the evening will consist of campus DJs and one surprise performance. “There will also be a “munch” area with food, a bar area with alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks and a

chill area,” said Lisa Abrahams, Osler’s social House Committee (HK) member. The event kicks off at 7pm and will carry on until 2am. There will be no entrance fee, however guests will be asked to present their student cards upon entry. “This festival will create a unique opportunity for the first years to bond with the rest of campus. “At Tygerberg the age difference is vast and this event is tailored to cater for everybody,” said Jessica Okere, prim of Huis Francie.

Sound session: A musical success Osler PSO came up with their own solution to the typical commercial hits usually played at campus socials. Their answer? Sound sessions. Jade Damons, Osler PSO’s primarius, described their brainchild as a “primarily underground, electronic collective of sound”. “We wanted to bring something new to Tygerberg’s campus life, something less commercial and mainstream.” After enjoying great initial success, various Sound Sessions will now take place throughout the year. The previous Sound Session was

hosted on 7 April. According to Damons, Osler PSO’s Facebook Page posts the date and genre of each Sound Session so people who are interested in that specific genre can then contact them and apply to be part of the line-up. The genre for the previous session was chill out, hip-hop and instrumental. The PSO then selects the line-up from the applications. The successful applicants will then be the curators at the next event and will run the evening. They can be a DJ and do a liveset, or they can just bring a flash disc.

Tip #1: It’s all in the hair Change up your hairstyles to keep things fresh. We’re talking braids, buns and ponytails - both stylish and practical when wearing scrubs. We recommend the fishtail braid. If you struggle to get styles right, YouTube is your best friend! With numerous tutorials and hundreds of styles there’s really no excuse to settle for that same old boring hair do. If you aren’t comfortable doing it yourself, get your friends to help.

Tip #2: Shoes A pair of sneakers will keep your feet happy whilst running around the hospital, but at the same time keep you looking like a fashionista. They can go with almost anything and will look cool with a pair of jeans and a cute shirt for drinks or dinner with friends after your shift. Comfort is key here and thanks to the myriad of options out there, combining comfort and fashion is super easy. You could even go as far as colour coding them with your scrubs.

Tip #3: Scrub caps They don’t have to be boring! Get some exciting prints on your scrub cap to compliment your fishtail braid. Anything goes here, from floral to tribal prints, get creative. Fashion is meant to be an expression of your personality. You can mix and match with friends to keep costs down, and it will ensure that you always have a fresh and exciting look whenever you are heading into theatre.

Tip #4: Long hours equals coffee To complete your look, make sure you have a personal travel mug for the much needed caffeine fixes. Typo is a great place to find pretty mugs with cheeky quotes. It’s also affordable. Studies have shown that there are a number of health benefits associated with consuming caffeine, just be sure not to over do it! You can also use your travel mug for tea and hot chocolate when you feel like giving the Java a rest.

Tip #5: Toss those boring masks To make you and your patients’ hospital experience a bit more entertaining, get surgical masks with pictures or patterns on them. A beard, a pig’s nose, tribal or floral patterns - the options are close to endless. Just make sure to match it to your personality and style. Why not inject a bit of humour into the day? Remember, although medicine is serious, your fashion doesn’t have to be.

ie oudste manskoshuis in SuidAfrika is hoofsaaklik ’n raaisel vir die res van kampus, maar een keer ’n jaar word die publiek toegelaat om die vier mure van Wilgenhof binne te gaan. Carry 6 Packer was ’n besonderse gebeurtenis en talle mense het die vierkant en stoepe volgepak om van Suid-Afrika se topkunstenaars te sien. “Fokofpolisiekar was op hul beste, en die vibe wat hulle gebring het was mal goed,” het Carl-hein Visser, ’n eerstejaarstudent in ingenieurswese gesê. Gangs of Ballet, Fokofpolisiekar en Sketchy Bongo was die groot trekpleisters. Janke van Schalk w yk en George van Dyk het met hulle gesels. GANGS OF BALLET How does the Stellenbosch crowd feel to you guys in comparison to your normal crowds? Jonny Rich: I think it’s really cool and there’s a couple places where we really like to play because of the people, and I don’t know if it’s the student vibe, but when everyone’s living close together, you’re with your mates when you go out, and everyone’s just there to have a jol. Brad Klynsmith: The crowd’s crazy here, and the level of energy. There’s only a few places in South

Africa that have that kind of energy.

Dis tien teen een die coolste venue in Stellenbosch. Aandklas is lekker contained, maar hier kan baie mense wees, dis wild hier.

Moving to the music vibe, what would you guys say inspires you to write music? Who or what is your muse? Josh Klynsmith: I think if I hear a good band, new music that I really dig, I find that quite inspiring (and) if I watch a really good band live. Last time we got to watch Steve Mckeller from Civil, and I came away from that feeling really inspired. The year is more or less half way through, what are your other major plans for 2017, what’s your driving force? Brad: Hmm.. Greatness.. I’m joking. We have a couple of tours coming up. We’ve actually got a great unplugged tour going around the country in winter at some nice, cosy venues. We really enjoy small venues, it's just more intimate. We feel like we always say this in interviews, but we really are ready to go back into the studio again. So we should be looking forward to some new music from you guys? Brad: Yeah, that’s going to be the vibe. We’re basically in that cycle of writing and then we’re going to start recording and releasing.

It’s been great, everything has been smooth running from my side. I know somebody pulled out at the last second and the students had to sort it out themselves and they did a great job. People came through, they got their liquor licence, it’s been good! Your ski mask has undoubtedly become part of your image. Is

there a story behind the mask? I was shooting a music video a while back with an artist called Sheen Skaiz and I found the ski mask in the back of one of the cars (laughs). It was cool and it was a prop, so we ended up just using it and I kept it. What is the weirdest thing a fan has ever done or asked you to do before? Once, there was a big festival in Joburg, called Joburg Day., and this old lady brought a baby, like, newborn baby, and wanted me to sign the baby! I was just like, no.

Three cheers at Emo Night LUKE SMITH

Sometime last year Craig Roxburgh and Dominique Lea were dreaming about an event that could really tap into their love for the Emo subculture that arose in the mid-2000’s. They dreamt of Fall Out Boy and Blink 182 blaring through speakers and heads banging and people grooving to one of the most underrated genres of music of all time. Almost a full year later, the two of them have successfully held five Emo nights at various venues in Cape Town, including Manila Bar, Hectic on Hope and Mercury, drawing people from all walks of life and uniting them through a common love for Emo punk music. Emo Nights in South Africa have been largely inspired by the Emo Night franchise all around the world with the team even being in contact

with Emo Night Brooklyn, who acted as a mentor to some degree. The Emo Night team has been consistently growing and expanding, and the first ever Emo night in Stellenbosch will be on 6 May 2017 at Aandklas. Both Craig and Dominique are students at Stellenbosch University (SU) and have been pressured into hosting one of their Emo nights for a while due to the overwhelming demand for variety in Stellenbosch’s nightlife. The Emo night team has organised an awesome line-up that includes indie rock band Forefront, punk rock band Past Haunts, as well as Emo Nights resident mid-2000’s Emo kid, DJ Criboi, who promises to keep you dancing all night long. Emo Nights follow a strict mandate, stating that all performers must have a 50/50 split of original music and classic.

It is no secret that attending Stellenbosch University (SU) opens up doors, and Rivkah Hope, a Stellenbosch University (SU) alumni, is no exception. “My time studying at Stellenbosch was far more than just getting a degree – it was equipping me for the big world,” she says. The singer/songwriter released her album Globetrotter earlier this year, and she is planning to take a break in South Africa from her global adventures at the end of the year. Rivkah, a 2013 BA Humanities graduate, took part in many activities whilst at SU, including the university choir, MFM, various societies on campus, and even sports reporting. After graduating, Rivkah pursued her dream career. From the start, it was all about “the love of music, first and foremost”. Rivkah released her first album, Time Is Forever, in South Africa in December 2013. The production of her pop folk album landed her to #1 on the ReverbNation pop charts for eight consecutive weeks. Her career abroad started in New York where she worked as a songwriter and singer with hip-hop group Nice

‘AFRICAN GYPSY QUEEN’ and iLL in April 2015. Their single, ‘Back To The Basics’, was released in early 2016. It was successful in the USA and South Africa. At the end of 2015, she moved to Poland. “Poland is a great place with an unstoppable energy. Although you still see the mark of communism with their simple blocklike apartment buildings, the place is quickly developing,” she says. Rivkah drew inspiration from their rich culture and “true appreciation for music”. “People were really keen and interested to hear my music and work with me. I met so many young pioneers which encouraged me to work harder

and faster.” After Poland, she performed and collaborated with producers, record labels and DJs across Europe and America. “Globetrotter is basically a summary of my life as a nomad over the past 3 years. I’ve lived in many cities around the world which has also taken me on an emotional journey.” At the moment, Rivkah is in Chicago for a couple of weeks finishing up some writing projects in a country where the “electric vibe” offers her the perfect conditions for writing music. She will be heading to Nashville soon for some song writing projects with Grammy award-winning producers. She is also working as a songwriter for Eurovision contestants. “I feel fortunate to be part of the biggest song contest in the world,” she says. As for the rest of 2017, her new song ‘Angel in Disguise’ is coming out in May. She collaborated with Polish rapper Wac Toja. Rivkah advises students to make the most of their time in Stellenbosch. “Get involved and stay open minded! Stellenbosch can easily just be an institution. The key is to make it your own.”

AGAIN, DELEGITIMIZING WHAT? We are looking forward to the SRC’s next press release about how we are spreading “fake news”. (Isn’t it funny how quickly press releases can be compiled, but simple questions can’t be answered in full sentences). Like the question about which student constitution is the current, valid, approved version? To get a definitive answer on this simple question seems to be an impossible task. Thus far neither the SRC, nor several university structures, can provide clarity on this. It is therefore safe to assume that the SRC is operating under an invalid, amended version of the constitution. (Also noteworthy is that they struggle to follow this amended version). It is rather worrying that the highest student structure on campus can’t even adhere to their own laws. And what about transparency? The financial documents that are supposed to be available to all students are no where to be found. Die Matie has been accused of “delegitimizing” the SRC on a number of occasions. This is, to use their favourite term, “fake news”. You can’t delegitimize something that’s not legit.

COURTNEY DU PLOOY We aren’t saying don’t protest #Zumamustfall. What we are saying is that it’s frustrating how people are selective when it comes to involvement and concerns regarding South Africa. So many people have the attitude that this protest against Zuma is a “South African issue”, as if other protests, such as #Feesmustfall, weren’t. It’s frustrating because this #Zumamustfall protests brought to light how in this country you have protests about issues that affect both privileged and underprivileged, as well as those in which only the underprivileged are affected. You’ll most likely have the underprivileged present at both, but it is seldom you will see the privileged helping out by giving voice to the underprivileged. It’s annoying when so many people all of a sudden want to advocate for unity, especially when most of these people had so much negativity regarding #Feesmustfall. Many people would like to see those who protested at #Zumamustfall at future protests where they aren’t directly affected and show some support. Show their “unity”. Otherwise this “unity” is nothing but an illusion where the privileged only concern themselves with South African issues when they too are affected. As privileged individuals we have a responsibility to be there for our less privileged South Africans, giving voice to their issues and concerns. We must also note how #Feesmustfall was called disruptive before there was even any damage to property.

Yes, burning down buildings was extreme, but had people been more supportive – such drastic measures wouldn’t had been taken. Many of us are against Jacob Zuma and his administration, but it’s also important to shed light on how people only want to “protest” when they are directly affected. Improving our country isn’t only focusing on its government and leaders, but also being a comrade to your less fortunate countrymen and women. South Africa’s problems won’t disappear magically upon the disappearance of Zuma. His stepping down or impeachment won’t be a magic wand that fixes all our problems. South Africa will still be a broken country because certain groups will return to their lifestyles and complain whenever there are moderately disruptive protests that seek to reduce widespread inequality in the country. Zuma MUST go, but upon his disappearance, white voices must remain within the realm of active citizenship, instead of only piping up when their interests are being infringed upon. I have always been vocal about my opinion regarding the events on our campus. Specifically, I have never been in agreement with the #Feestmustfall protests. This is not because I do not support the cause but because I feel that these protests are not directed towards the correct structures. As a third year (BA)Law student, I have been exposed to various sides of the spectrum. I have been privy to many arguments for and against these forms of protest. I do, however, support the #Zumamustfall movement. I believe that we are finally protesting against the proper structures. In my opinion organisations such as #Feesmustfall are not directing their anger towards the right people. The university does not have the means to satisfy the demands of the students. In particular, I do not believe that the Stellenbosch University is financially equipped to offer free education to students, however advantageous such an ideal may be. The government, or Jacob Zuma, are in a better position to grant students in need the money they require to further their education. Yet, they do not lift a finger to help. This is why I believe that the protests aimed at removing Zuma from his position of presidency is a step in the right direction. South Africa has seen bitter days with Zuma as our president. Recently, his decision to reshuffle the Cabinet has resulted in our country being demoted to junk status. Had a more competent person been

in charge, such a demotion could easily have been avoided. Furthermore, I support the #Zumamustfall protests because they are peaceful. The infringement of rights is something that should, first and foremost, never be compromised. We have seen major destruction take place during the course of previous protests. The #Zumamustfall protests stand in stark contrast to this. As far as I know, no violence or destruction of property took place. Finally, I find it disheartening that there are people who claim that the #Zumamustfall protests are racially motivated. It should not be about race. Anyone who wishes to make it so must have some sort of hidden agenda. It is a reality that, unfortunately, the lower class black people are the ones who have suffered the most under Zuma’s incompetent presidency. Therefore, the actions taken in order to remove Zuma should not be seen a as a “white cause”. It is a South African cause. Viljoen is a third year student in BA Law.

‘Half a soccer match can change a life’

eila Amien gives people the chance to smile by linking charity work with sport. On 23 April, Amien, in conjunction with Operation Smile, hosted a five-aside charity soccer tournament in order to raise funds to provide patients with cleft lip and palate surgeries. Fives Futbol in Century City is responsible for hosting and managing the event on the day. “These facial deformities cause children to struggle to eat, breathe and speak. A lot of them struggle with malnutrition because their parents don’t know how to feed them correctly,” said Amien, a fourth year medical student from Stellenbosch University’s (SU) Tygerberg campus. Amien became involved in Operation Smile in 2013 when she started

studying at Tygerberg. She then joined the Operation Smile Society on campus. “Not long after, I was chosen to become head of the Operation Smile society. “That’s when I started the soccer tournaments because I wanted to raise more money than what was being raised from cake and smoothie sales.” There is a large soccer culture within South Africa, which is what led Amien towards linking sport and uplifting the community. “People love playing socially so I thought why not involve the community more. “Let them play soccer and do what they love, and then they can also give back to the community in that way,” she said. Since its inception, the money Amien’s campaign has raised has in-

creased exponentially, with a total of R122000 raised in 2016. This allowed Operation Smile to pay for 22 surgeries. The tournament initially started off as a 32 team tournament, but due to positive response over the years, the tournament hosted 48 teams for the first time this year. Each team can have a minimum of five players and a maximum of eight. “Everyone must be over the age of 16 to enter, but there’s no cut off age. To enter a team its R800, and the winning team gets R8000, so that’s essentially R1000 a player. The runner up also receives R3000. “For those who love soccer, I need to put it into perspective. “One surgery takes 45 minutes to perform and one soccer match is 90 minutes long, so in half a soccer match you can change a person’s life.”

When asked if he gained any positives from the game, Crowie said, “definitely, we only had one training session on Tuesday and we only worked on our shape of the team. “Today was a good test to see if we can implement and gauge the positional discipline of the players. So the exercise was very fruitful.” The Maties soccer team is in the process of rebuilding its entire structure. Stellenbosch University (SU) made concerted efforts to build a formidable soccer team since last year after recruiting six players from various leagues in South Africa. One of the biggest attributes the team displayed is having a common goal. “We are not playing in any leagues at the moment so we’ll still be playing friendlies and getting in to the USSA (University Sports South Africa) Championship this year in June,” said Courtney Williams, one of the recruits from last year’s initiative. Crowie has vowed to maintain a cool headed and pragmatic approach in identifying the right playing style for his team. “I can’t be naïve about how I want the team to play. “I need to look at the talent I currently have and be pragmatic where that’s concerned and see what I can instil in the players I currently have,” said Crowie.
