Disqualified SRC nominees delay elections EMILY O’RYAN & DILLON HENWOOD

N

ominations for the Student Representative Council for 2018/2019 have been extended due to a shortage of nominees. Eight students are currently standing for nine positions on the SRC after nominations closed on Tuesday, 14 August at 12:00, compelling the election committee (ElectUS) to reopen nominations until Monday, 20

August at 12:00. To represent 31 765 registered students, a minimum of nine candidates are required to run for the SRC in order for the election process to commence. However, following the disqualification of three candidates, due to HEMIS requirements, only eight candidates are currently eligibly standing for the SRC 2018/2019. Two of the three disqualified candidates have appealed their applications, and await a final decision

by the Deans of their respective faculties, the Student Dean, Head of Student Governance and Election Conveners. According to Cathelynne Walker, Election Convenor, the verdict is to be established by the morning of Wednesday, 15 August. Walker asserted that the SRC would still deem the elections successful despite the fact that so few people have applied. Walker advocates that the SRC is more interested in “strong candidates”

than many candidates. She further explicated the SRC’s advertising initiatives to publicise the opening of nominations, saying that the SRC “usually puts up 25–50 posters”, but that this undertaking has not been conducive. She added that their marketing budget has now rather been utilised for social media advertising. Leighton September, SRC Communications Officer, has expressed his disappointment when

he heard that only eleven students had applied for positions in total, and that there are currently only eight eligible candidates. According to Sfiso Zungu, Representative of the South African Student Congress (SASCO), SU is currently experiencing a leadership crisis. “[In 2015/2016] there was something on campus that made us really critical and we wanted to see transformation, so it was easier then to have many candidates running.”
