10. The basics You don’t know me, do you? Question tags Form Question tags are formed with an auxiliary verb and a pronoun: • if there is an auxiliary verb in the statement or the main verb is to be, use that verb in the tag: Your name is Ria, isn’t it? She will come, won’t she? • if there is no auxiliary verb and the main verb is not to be, use the dummy auxiliary do / does / did: You never really listen to people, do you? • if the statement is affirmative, use a negative tag: You will go on, won’t you? • if the statement is negative, use an affirmative tag: I can’t really believe you, can I? • For commands, suggestions, requests … use the auxiliary will and ignore the affirmative / negative guideline: Pick that up, will you? • After let’s, use shall we: Let’s have some fun, shall we? • Use aren’t I with I am and am I with I am not: I’m on the list, aren’t I? I am not on the list, am I? • After used to, use did / didn’t: He used to live here, didn’t he? He didn’t use to live here, did he? • After the main verb have / has, you can also use do / does in the tag: She has a new bike, doesn’t she?
Use • The main use of question tags is to seek confirmation of what the speaker believes to be true, to check that the person you are talking to agrees that your understanding is correct. Nice home, isn’t it? • Question tags help to bring the listener into the flow of conversation. They typically expect an agreeing answer or no answer at all and have falling intonation. • Question tags can also be used to complain or to show anger or annoyance. You just never stop, do you? • They can also be used in exclamations. It’s a fantastic house, isn’t it!

12. On speaking terms You moved onward! Discussing progress I am new to this. I just can’t get into the groove.
Give it some time. Give yourself some time to gain ground and you’ll see: you’ll blossom!
I expected the project to move forward; instead it is slowly regressing.
I prefer slow, but steady progress.
I am an all or nothing kind of guy; I like to kick into high gear and get things done. I was already giving up, expecting this plan to fade away. But all of a sudden there was a breakthrough! Did you make any progress with the labels?
I got them printed, but then things started to stagnate.
I expected more and measurable progress.

The quotes below all deal with progress. Does that mean that they all deal with the same thing?
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
'We all want progress. But progress means getting nearer to the place where you want to be. And if you have taken a wrong turning then to go forward does not get you any nearer. If you are on the wrong road progress means doing an about-turn and walking back to the right road and in that case the man who turns back soonest is the most progressive man. There is nothing progressive about being pig-headed and refusing to admit a mistake. And I think if you look at the present state of the world it's pretty plain that humanity has been making some big mistake. We're on the wrong road. And if that is so we must go back. Going back is the quickest way on.' C.S. Lewis, "The Case for Christianity" _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
'The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man.' George Bernard Shaw, "Man and Superman" _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
'Progress isn't made by early risers. It's made by lazy men trying to find easier ways to do something.' Robert Heinlein _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
• 'So, why do you create these strong female characters?' - 'Because you’re still asking me that question.' Joss Whedon
• Write a header for each quote, defining the type of progress it deals with. • What type of progress does the world need the most? • These are all men talking about progress. Use the Internet to find four quotes by women. What is the difference? Is there a difference?
