When you atone for something, you try to make it right again. Can you atone for everything? Are there crimes or secrets you can’t atone for? Discuss. The novel "Atonement" by Ian McEwan is about secrets and crimes. Read the introduction.

"Atonement" – introduction Known for telling stories about problematic teens and dysfunctional family relationships, Ian McEwan does not stray too far from his roots in "Atonement". The first half of the novel focuses on one day in a seemingly idyllic setting, when suddenly everything goes wrong. At the core of the whirlwind circumstances that change the lives of the people around her is a thirteen-year-old girl with a significant imagination and maybe just a touch of cruelty in her eyes. When she was ten, Briony Tallis confessed her pre-teen infatuation for Robbie Turner, the twenty-yearold son of the Tallis family’s housekeeper. Three years later, when the novel opens, Briony witnesses Robbie and Briony’s older sister, Cecilia, flirting with one another. Briony, through interior monologue, does not understand what is going on between Robbie and Cecilia. She is disturbed when she reads a note Robbie has sent to Cecilia that has obvious sexual overtones. When she catches Robbie and Cecilia in a dark corner of the family’s library in the throes of passionate sex, Briony fears for her sister’s life. Or at least, that is what she tells the reader. That might even be what she tells herself. However, this does not fully explain what she does next. At the end of a celebratory dinner, which includes Briony’s family, three visiting cousins, and a wealthy friend, Briony’s nine-year-old twin cousins excuse themselves from the table, leaving behind a note that states they are running away. In the dark of a hot summer night, the family goes out onto the grounds of

the family estate to search for the missing boys. While all the other family members are calling out the boys’ names, Briony is by herself, scheming. Briony happens upon her sixteen-year-old cousin Lola, who is crying. As Briony approaches, a male figure recedes into further darkness. Lola has been raped. Briony, still under the influence of her fear and disappointment, identifies the rapist as Robbie. And so the disintegration of the family begins. Robbie is sentenced to jail. ! The past participle of regular verbs ends in –ed, irregular verbs have various forms.

Use The past perfect simple is used to talk about the relationship between events in the past. It indicates that an event happened further back in the past than another event. Eric had just left when his father arrived. ! There is nothing in the structure that says how much time has passed between the past perfect and the past simple events. The events could be seconds apart or millions of years. The dinosaurs had gone extinct when man appeared on earth. The past perfect simple is often used with these signal words: • already I had already checked his bags when the police arrived. • just We had just cancelled the meeting when Tommy showed up. • before They had spoken to each other on the phone before they met in person. The past perfect simple is often used with verbs such as to realise, to notice, to hear, to discover, to see… : When I opened my bag, I realised I had left my keys at work.

Indirect speech • Reported or indirect speech is used to retell what one person says or has said to another. He said that he was coming to the party. In everyday speech, the word that can be omitted. • The tense in the reported part moves one step backwards in time, but you can’t go further back than the past perfect simple. ! This rule doesn’t always apply. If a situation is still true in the present, you can choose whether to use a present form or to go 'one step backwards’. e.g. 'I live in Paris.’ She said she lives in Paris. or She said she lived in Paris. • If you find the 'one step backwards’ guideline confusing, use the following ones: - if a sentence is true now, use a present tense I know that she loves me. - if a sentence is about the past, use a past tense He said that he went to the movies. - if a sentence is about something that happened before what is being described, use the past perfect simple Yesterday she told me that they had bullied her. • Not only the verbs change when we use reported speech. Pronouns will often need to change, as well as time and place. When reporting, there is typically a shift of perspective from the 'here now’ of a live conversation to the 'there then’ of the same conversation being talked about later. 'We are leaving now.’ ➛ He said they were leaving then. • The most important verbs for indirect speech are to say and to tell. The verb to tell needs a personal object. The verb to say can’t have a personal object. She said that I was too friendly. She told me that I was too friendly. • With a reporting verb in the present or the future there is no change of tense in the reported sentences. Only the pronouns change. He says: 'You can’t enter.' ➛ He says that you can’t enter. She will say: 'I hate reading.' ➛ She will say that she hates reading.
