Local learners take pride in cycling
At a recent event held at the Piketberg Cricket Grounds the Bergrivier Municipality signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with The Sports Trust for a five-year partnership in support of the annual Sports Trust Community Cycle Race and Social Cohesion Event in Piketberg, which will be held on the 7th October 2018, hosted by Steynville Senior School in Piketberg. 2018 is the 14th year of the Sports Trust Development Cycling Programme in the Western Cape. Funded since 2005 by Nedbank together with The Sports Trust, this extremely successful programme has taken the sport of cycling into 12 under-resourced high schools and their communities, from the Cape Flats to the Boland. The programme has supplied bikes and supported the training and participation of over 200 learners per year at the participating schools. One of these schools is Steynville Senior Secondary in Piketberg, which, for the second year running is hosting the Sports Trust Community Cycle Race and Social Cohesion Event on 7 October 2018. The main event is a 98km and 46km race. The magnificent but daunting 8km mountain climb up the Versveld Pass constitutes the final stretch of the 98km ride. The younger age groups will participate in shorter races. Dean Josephus, Director of Community Services says ‘’Bergrivier Municipality is so excited to be signing the Memorandum of Understanding with The Sports Trust. Not only will the Cycling event attract people to our beautiful town, Piketberg, and the entire Bergrivier area, but it is also integrating cohesion, unity and creating a long lasting positive change in our community. The Sports Trust has the full support of Bergrivier Municipality and we look forward to our partnership. The development cyclists from all 12 schools will be competing in this race, alongside cyclists from clubs throughout the Western Cape, as happens in all of the three or four Sports Trust Community Cycle Races and associated social events annually hosted in the communities of the participating schools.
Nuwe kunsroetes op Paternoster

These races are open to all cyclists and are highly competitive, attracting up to 800 entrants – which the Piketberg race achieved last year. The races are endorsed by Cycling South Africa and detailed logistics are required for each race, including bringing in traffic officials, race officials, medical support and race marshals from the community. “It is so inspiring to see the ever-growing numbers of development cyclists on competing in the distinctive new Nedbank Green shirts,” says Tobie Badenhorst, Head of Group Sponsorships and Cause Marketing at Nedbank. “Our cyclists have performed well and showed year on year improvement ever since we joined the development cycling programme at the end of 2013, and they received bicycles and equipment in 2014,” says Steynville Senior Secondary educator and head of cycling, Cyril Keyster. Several of the Steynville Senior Secondary learners who are in the Sports Trust Development Cycling Programme qualify to participate in the Cape Town Cycle Tour each year. Two of

the cyclists, Joshua Toontjies and Eduardo Engelbrecht were both selected for the Western Cape Cycling team. Learner Gurswin Daniëls was selected for the West Coast MTB team. The beauty of this programme is that if they do well at school and cycling, when they matriculate they can get scholarships for higher education and they can join cycling clubs wherever they find themselves. Jan Faro, father of Eduardo Engelbrecht, is making the trophies: “I’m a welder and I started making trophies out of scrap metal offcuts and sculpting them into replicas of cyclists because my son Eduardo is part of the development cycling programme and he was selected for the Western Cape cycling team. He joined two years ago and I have seen a big difference in him; he now has his schoolwork and cycling on his mind.” Joshua Toontjies who is thinking of becoming a professional cyclist says: “Cycling gives me the belief that I can do better in anything I attempt. To be a good cyclist I must be disciplined and because of that I am more disciplined in my schoolwork,” he says.

By die afgelope naweek se Bergrivier Karnaval het die lugmag se silwer valke 'n draai gemaak en 'n vertoning gelewer wat besoekers en gaste na hul asems laat snak het.
Nuwe gesig by Yzerfontein-toerisme
Yzerfontein verwelkom ‘n nuwe toerismebeampte. Lin Coetzee beskryf dit as ‘n groot voorreg en geniet nog elke oomblik sedert sy haar nuwe posisie ingeneem het. Toerisme en die passie vir mense en die bedryf is van ‘n jong ouderdom gekweek. Sy het kort ná matriek byna daagliks met toeriste te doen gekry wat haar vandag ‘n boffen op die gebied maak. Coetzee wat aanvanklik op Malmesbury gebore is, het haar kinderjare op die buurdorp, Darling deurgebring. Na laerskool, vat sy die pad na die Paarl waar sy later aan Girls High matrikuleer het. Met ‘n hoërskoolloopbaan omring deur wingerde, is dit byna vanselfsprekend dat sy ná skool vir twee jaar in die plaaslike wynbedryf op Stellenbosch betrokke raak. Daarná groet sy nie net Suid-Afrika vir 23 jaar nie, maar kry die geleentheid om saam met haar man en twee kinders in Namibië te gaan bly, en dit nogal op ‘n jagplaas vir trofeejagters wat boonop met ‘n boog kom jag. Sy en haar gesin het teruggekeer na tuisbodem en woon sedert Januarie vanjaar op die Swartlandse kusdorpie, wat sy as ongelooflik beskryf. Sy is absoluut gaande oor die dorp en
sy mense wat so gasvry is. “Yzerfontein is spesiaal, rustig en veilig met al sy mooi,” voeg sy by. As iemand wat daarvan hou om met mense te werk én mense te help, pas die posisie as die dorp se nuwe toerismebeampte haar soos ‘n handskoen. En die uitsig vanuit haar kantoor, is ‘n bonus, verduidelik sy. “Ons kantoor is op die rotse met ‘n uitsonderlike uitsig in een van die oudste geboue op die dorp. Om deel te wees van Yzerfontein Toerisme is ‘n groot voorreg,” voeg sy by. Haar missie is om die gasvrye kultuur van die dorp en sy prag aan toeriste en besoekers bekend te stel. Sy streef ook daarna om ‘n aanwins te wees tot die plaaslike gemeenskap en sy inwoners, vertel Coetzee. “My wens is dat die hele dorp en ons omgewing baat by toerisme en ook dat die inwoners en gaste van Yzerfontein ons dorp as kosbaar en uniek sal ervaar.” Volgens haar koester Yzerfontein baie potensiaal. Om alleenlik op die kusdorp wat nie te groot of onpersoonlik is nie, verseker reeds ‘n besonderse lewenskwaliteit. “Hier is so baie geleenthede om Yzerfontein as ‘n toeristebestemming te bemark. “Ek het ‘n passie om met mense te werk en hier

Weskussers omtrent ‘n bont spul
Of ‘n mens nou na ‘n Christelike “human whisperer” luister oor haar uitkyk op die lewe of ‘n by kaasmaker kyk hoe sy haar fynere kunsies beoefen, die Weskus is ‘n bonte spul van talent, kreatiwiteit en kleurrykheid (en nou praat ons juis níé van die blomme nie ...) Saam met die vele "inkommers", raak dit ‘n al meer kosmopolitaanse plek. ‘n Mens moet elke soort mens op haar of sy eie baadjie takseer. Gegoede afgetrede Engelse mense in rykmansbuurte het gewoonlik al die wêreld gesien en kan wonderlike avontuurverhale vertel. ‘n Politikus was gebore en getoë is in een van die armste woonbuurte in die Weskus, het weer ‘n verhaal van sukses ten spyte van swaarkry. Dan is daar die sakelui wat wissel van ou ondernemings wat al generasies in dieselfde familie is tot mense van ver wat ‘n onderneming hier kom begin met baie sterre in hul oë. Die Staal en Tronox, Duferco, het ambagsmanne van oral laat instroom wat nou al amper twee vir dekades hier nesgeskop, kinders gekry en matriekafskeide beplan. Meestal hou mense by hul eweknieë. Die meeste mense kom in hulle leeftyd nooit in andersoortige leefwêrelde nie. Hulle hou eerder by die bekende. As koerantmense het ons die voorreg om alles te ervaar en oral te kom – van ‘n plakkershut waar ‘n jong meisie deur ‘n jaloerse kêrel vermoor is tot in argitektoniese wonder van luukse huise. Min weet die inwoners van die uiteenlopende plekke, dat hulle soveel in gemeen het. In dié land dra ons saam aan persoonlike leed. Aan ‘n regering wat maar net nie op dreef kan kom nie. Met politici wat net in die aanloop tot ‘n verkiesing ‘n aks omgee van wat in mense se daaglikse lewens aangaan. As ons maar net wil uitreik. Die meeste mense in Suid-Afrika is goeie mense wat wil werk, huis toe gaan en darem iets lekkers hê om te eet. Dit moet net waar wees, anders sou ons al lankal in anargie verval het.

Paternoster loods sy eie en unieke kunsroete •Madi Pieterse Paternoster se eie kunsroete is Saterdag, 14 Julie amptelik geloods. Die agt deelemende kunstenaars en galerye het saam met sowat 60 mense die kunsroete as deel van die landwye vieringe van Madiba se 100ste verjaardag bygewoon. Hul is At Botha, Fleur Delyse, Magda Art, pb Ceramics, die Stone Fish Studio and Gallery, Uro Erichsen, Wayne en Sandy Attril en Wilko Roon. “Nelson Mandela, wat op 18 Julie 1918 gebore is, was ongetwyfeld in die wieg gelê om die toekoms van Suid-Afrika onherroepelik te verander,” het die waaremende Uitvoerende Burgemeester van Saldanhabaai, Raadsheer Elize Steyn gesê. Steyn, wat die roete amptelik geopen het, het gesê Mandela was tydens sy 27 jaar in die tronk seker die wêreld se bekendste, maar waarskynlik die mins-herkenbare, politieke gevangene. “Daarna was hy waarskynlik die wêreld se mees gefotografeerde man. “Ek glo sy deursettingsvermoë, sy will om dinge gedoen te kry en sy absolute geloof in
die wil van mense om hul omstandighede te verbeter, was van sy mees uitstaande kenmerke. Hiersonder sou hy nie kon vermag wat hy het nie – om Suid-Afrika te lei na waarna ons almal uitsien – ‘n goeie lewe vir almal. Een van sy bekendste gesegdes – dinge lyk altyd onmoontlik totdat dit gedoen is - is vandag nog net so waar. “Madiba sal altyd vir ons ‘n ikoon bly,” het sy gesê. Daarna is besoekers op ‘n bakkie en tuk-tuk na die onderskeie kunsgalerye geneem om die deelenemende kusntenaars se uitstallings te besigtig. By die leerlingsypaadjie-tekenkompetisie is Paternoster se opkomende kunstenaars, Alviro Kearns, Renaldo Coenraad en Mary-Ji Williams onderskeidelik met die eerste, tweede en derde prys beloon. Melissa Snyders en Jaheida Kearns het met die pryse vir die opkomende kunstenaars weggeloop. ’n Brosjure oor die kunsroete is by toerisme-instellings op die dorp beskikbaar. Eindpunt: By die eindpunt van die Bergrivier-kanomarathon

Veldblomskoue aan't kom
Die natuur maak weer reg om ‘n blommeskouspel te lewer wat nie teleur sal stel nie. Danksy die Darling Veldblommevereniging se 101ste Darling Veldblommeskou, hoef aanhangers nie ver te gaan soek vir die prag wat jaarliks vir kilometers ver toeskouers bekoor nie. Vanjaar se veldblommeskou, wat al vir meer as ‘n eeu besoekers verwelkom, vind weer vanaf 14 tot 16 September by die Gholfklub plaas. Die skou vier ‘n geïntegreerde deel van die Kaapse Fynboskoningkryk wat onder meer bestaan uit Renosterveld, Rietveld, Sandveld, en Strandveld waar meer as 1200 blommespesies gevind sal word. Die skou vier 101 jaar se bestaan met die tema wat gaan oor bewaring en die volgende generasie. Die uitstalling sal fokus op die Veldblommevereniging se ontwikkeling deur die 101 jare, asook die Herbarium- projek. Die skou sal weer propvol aktiwiteite en vermaak wees vir jong en oud. Die kaartjies sluit die ingangsfooi tot die uitstalling in die landskapsaal wat die veldblomme in die area in hul natuurlike habitat ten toon stel. ‘n Kuns -en kosmark, ‘n veteraan trekker -en motoruitstalling, ‘n vermaaklikheidstent wat regstreekse opvoerings sal bied en veilige parkering. Besoekers kan ook uitsien na ‘n verskeidenheid werkswinkels. Vir meer inligting oor die werkswinkels, kan die vereniging se webblad by www.darlingwildflowers.co.za besoek word. Besoekers kan vanjaar weer deur Darling rondrits met besoeke wat onder meer by die Darling Museum, Evita se Perron, die Duckitt Kwekerye, Darling se Hoofstraat en die Renosterveld Natuurreservaat sal aflê. Ouers sal ook bly wees om te hoor dat kinders ook heeldag besig sal bly met ‘n speelparkarea, terwyl ma en pa kan ontspan in die mini wyn –en biertent. Jou ingangsfooi tot die skou help jaarliks om die bedreigde blommeryk vir die volgende generasies te bewaar. Huis Wittekruin hou basaar
Huis Wittekruin se jaarlikse, uiters gewilde, basaar is weer op hande. Basaargangers van oraloor besoek die ouetehuis op Vredenburg se jaarlikse basaar om van die vele lekkernye wat te koop aangebied word, op te raap. En menige moes al teleurgesteld omdraai aangesien die goedjies vinnig van die tafels af verdwyn. Om hierdie grootste fondsinsamelingsprojek van Huis Wittekruin selfs `n groter sukses te maak, word skenkings met ope arms ontvang. Daar word veral `n beroep op jagters in die omgewing gedoen om vleisbene te skenk sodat die lekker vleisies wat agterbly gekook en tot wildspasteie verwerk kan word. Gebak, poedings, handwerk en enigiets wat aftrek by die basaar sal kry, sal nie te versmaai wees nie. Partners for Possibility (PfP) has urged business leaders in Malmesbury, on the West Coast of Cape Town, to heed the call to contribute meaningfully to education in South Africa. ing under-resourced schools by facilitating partnerships between school principals and business leaders in a year-long, structured programme of leadership development and support. The leadership development programme carefully considers the contextual reality within which principals are expected run their schools – an often underplayed or completely overlooked determining factor. With the role of a school principal as an inherently challenging one, in South Africa, which is one of the most unequal societies in the world, the majority of principals face formidable additional leadership challenges which arise from functionality factors including poor school infrastructure, under-qualified and demotivated teachers, and students who are often hungry and ill, do not have proper clothing and lack parental support. Helping hand for girls, boys and parents In the day and age youngsters and parents find themselves in, complications and challenges facing these groups, are eminent. However, there is a place they can call upon for help – Girls and Boys Town. This organisation caters for the Swartland as well. Girls and Boys Town is a national non-profit organisation, established in 1958, committed to helping and empowering those South African girls and boys who are vulnerable, at-risk and unsafe – helping them to reclaim their lives and then shine! Holistic work with youth is central to being effective for their healing. They thus offer solutions from within four national service divisions: 1. Residential Service Division provides therapeutic residential care to over 300 boys and girls, on any given day in ten nationally located residential centres. We are the only South African organisation offering youth 2 alternative therapeutic residential programme options: 4 Youth Development Centres: The unique Peer-Group System of Self-government model significantly involves girls and boys in decisionmaking concerning their own affairs. Youth elect a peer Mayor and Council and govern themselves under the guidance of adults, where they are taught to take responsibility for themselves and others. 6 Family “Group” Homes in the community: The Family Home Model, is unique in its focus on family-style living with emphasis on social skills teaching and meaningful self-governance by girls and boys. 2. Training and Education Service Division provides: Structured training workshops to parents (Common Sense Parenting), educators (Education Model in over 1009 schools since 2001), and all professionals working in the field. Day of records for Solomon Redesign Porterville's main - Nick Tatham in marathon road and win R25 000 Last year`s champion and runner-up Team Bamboo Warehouse`s Adrian Boros and Graeme Solomon made history when they became the first team to win the Berg River Canoe Marathon that ended in Velddrif on Saturday. It was a day of records for the 45 year-old Solomon who ended an incredible 17 year drought to win the race for a second time while also becoming the oldest person to win the event since Nollie Meyer won the four day odyssey at the age of 44. Boros and Solomon comfortably lived up to their pre-race ‘favourites tag’ as they spent to first two days establishing a healthy eleven minute lead going into the final stage on Saturday which they won ahead of Joep van Bakel and Keith Moule. The day`s racing was a formality with just stage honours the only realistic shot at glory for any of the chasing teams. However, Boros and Solomon had other plans and powered home to their third stage win out of four. “When I won in 2001 I thought it was going to be the first of many!” Solomon said. “That wasn`t the case and then it was a long time coming second, third, forth, fifth and sixth. All sorts of positions other than the one I wanted. “It`s awesome that I can finally come back and repeat the process and win again.” The unknown of the team format wasn`t daunting for Solomon who spent four days in 2017 getting to know Boros` strengths and weaknesses. “Last year we raced like a pair, but fighting against each other. “As competitors you learn what your opposition is good at so we went into this year`s race with a good idea of how strong we both were. It was a good combination because what I lack on top end speed he provides, and what he lacks in river knowledge I could provide, so we were a great team.” Boros had his first taste of the Berg River Canoe Marathon in 2016 where he had the likes of Hank McGregor and finished third in that showdown and then went two places better last year where he beat Solomon to the title. To back that up with another win in 2018 along with team mate Solomon is an impressive achievement for the Hungarian marathon ace. “It was awesome to defend my title this year and to do it together with Graeme was incred-
ible,” Boros said. “He taught me a lot about the river and led me through a lot of the tricky sections but I made up for it by pulling on the flat sections so we made a good team. “It is a crazy race for sure but I would love to be back next year to defend my title!” Runners-up Moule and Van Bakel spent the majority of the final three days playing catch-up and due to some errors the gap grew in size to the leaders which ended the race as a contest. However, they hung in well to finish in a solid second place. “We came into the race as probably the second favourites, so the race unfolded like we were expecting,” Moule mentioned. “We were definitely hoping to put the front guys under a bit more pressure because the closer you can keep on their tails the more pressure you put on them and hopefully the more mistakes they make. “Unfortunately that plan went out the window on the second day after we made those mistakes towards the end of the stage. “We kind of handed them the race after that. Then again, on Saturday they held all the cards and really are strong.” The age group titles were never in doubt throughout with Change a Life Capensis Mthobisi Cele and Mpilo Zondi taking home the u/23 crown while the impressive dup of Melvino Klaase and Angelo Smith won the junior title, finishing 11th overall. The mixed team title fell to Lisa Scott and Kevin Bouwer, as they gratefully stepped into the space left by the dimise of the Crispin Thompson/Bianca Beavitt combination when Thompson withdrew on the third stage, leaving Beavitt to soldier on alone as a solo paddler.
Bergrivier Municipality approved the hosting of a design competition for the regeneration of Porterville’s main road to integrate the urban space, create a sustainable and resilient town and to attract more tourists. Porterville’s main road (Voortrekker Street), (the section from Basson Street to Park Street), is to be redesigned. The design must include creative ideas which include the tourism office, informal trading area and gardens. A comprehensive process to stimulate the tourism industry in Porterville is currently underway through a dynamic consultation process. The process consists of various phases including: the redesign of the main road, the development of a tourism route through Monte Bertha linking the residential area to the main road, the development of various tourism products/routes, and to bring back the steam train to Porterville for tourism purposes. This is an exciting opportunity for residents of Bergrivier Municipality and any registered student enrolled at a recognized tertiary institution in South Africa, to submit their innovative design proposals. The heartbeat of any rural town resides in its main road. This is the area where people get to-
gether, where goods and services are exchanged and, more importantly, an entry point for the outside world and visitors to connect with the locals. Voortrekker Road functions as the town’s activity spine which offers vital economic opportunities to the local community. Bergrivier Municipality would like the designs to address aspects such as traffic congestion, parking space, beautification and the creation of recreational open spaces within this businessdistrict.
