In the afternoon, return to the city and delve into the heart of Beijing’s contemporary art scene at the 798 Art District.

Refuel yourselves with a cup of coffee or tea, surrounded by the purring bodies of the many cats at a cat cafĂŠ (there is one in Nanluoguxiang that also has ocelots). Pay your respects at the Lama Temple, the Chinese government-sanctioned seat of Tibetan Buddhism.

Embark on a bamboo raft ride down the Yulong River with Yangshuo’s stunning karst mountains undulating into the distance on either side.

In the afternoon, hike through Yangshuo’s countryside farming villages (~2hrs) for a look at how the locals have carved away amidst the towering mountains to provide for the com-munities.

In the evening, enjoy the spectacle of Impression Liusanjie, choreographed by the mas-termind behind the Beijing Olympics opening ceremony, in a natural amphitheater.
