With the first two quarters of 2019 behind us, our fifth issue unveils market statistics that prove our company is well on its way for another record year. I am thrilled to present the Summer issue of Dickens Mitchener Style to you. Inside Issue 5, we take a closer look at one of the hottest urban residential destinations in Charlotte, South End. We sat down with the owner of Lenny Boy Brewing Company and discovered how their mission goes beyond beer and kombucha. Also inside, we have a client spotlight on an inspiring young jazz saxophonist who is about to start school at Harvard and Berklee School of Music and has already appeared on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, a relocation success story from Rhode Island to the Queen City, insider tips from our team of Style experts, and as always, each of our exclusive listings. As we begin the second half of the year, please keep our team in mind for all of your real estate needs. Let us handle the details, no matter where your journey takes you!

The 18-year-old graduated at the top of her class, played saxophone on national TV and performed under the direction of a member of jazz’s first family – Wynton Marsalis. And she’s not even a college freshman yet. By the time you read this, the daughter of Dickens Mitchener clients Nikki and Ken Leahy, will be at Harvard – as well as the Berklee College of Music, the biggest independent college of contemporary music in the world. In five years, she’ll have a bachelor’s from Harvard and a master’s from Berklee .

HOMETOWN HERO Has her hometown shaped her as a musician? “The answer is an emphatic yes,” she said. “Charlotte isn’t necessarily a jazz city. But we do have a rapidly growing arts scene. It’s been fun for me to witness and be

Clie nt S p o tl ight | Veronica Leahy jazz studies at UNC Charlotte, when she was in sixth grade. “He’s been my mentor from the start,” she said. Phil Thompson, professor emeritus of woodwinds at Winthrop University is another. So is – and this may be the biggest success indictor of all – Wynton Marsalis, whom Nikki calls, quite rightly, “America’s jazz ambassador.” After Veronica won first place in the 2016 Loonis McGlohon Young Jazz Artists Competition, she and the second-place winner got to play with the critically acclaimed Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra – whose members judged the competition – under the direction of Marsalis during the Charlotte Jazz Festival. “I’ve been so lucky,” Veronica said of the mentors she’s had. “Music is rife with teachers who want to mold their students to be their product. But my teachers all want me to follow my dreams and my own path. They’ve understood how much I care about academics and have pushed me to do well there, too.” She’s also had Lonnie and Ocie Davis in her corner. The New Orleans transplants and Marsalis family friends started JazzArts Charlotte, a nonprofit that strives to develop audiences for jazz through education, performance and musician support.

PEACE OF MIND Their popular Jazz Room series includes an opening set performed by students – Veronica is often part of it – followed by the main act. She joined the program as an eighth grader and started playing in a “real jazz

WEEKEND Weekend Ge taways | Where To Go

WEEKEND getaways

One of the best things about living in Charlotte is the vast options to transform Saturday and Sunday into mini-vacations you can spend in the mountains, at the beach or somewhere in between. We talked to our team of Style experts and compiled a list of our favorite weekend getaways, all within driving distance of the Queen City. What we discovered is that Charlotteans know how to make the most of their weekends and beat the heat.

BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY A Blue Ridge Parkway experience is unlike any other. Packed with slow-paced, relaxing drives revealing stunning long-range vistas, close-up views of the rugged mountains and pastoral landscapes of the Appalachian Highlands. This is our top pick for the outdoorsy adventure. From ziplining to hiking in Mount Pisgah or camping in Julian Price Memorial Park the BRP is the perfect getaway if adventure is calling!

CHARLESTON, SC A little over 3 hours from the Queen City is Charleston, SC. This city of old school southern charm is filled with rich history, well- preserved architecture, distinguished restaurants and beaches galore. Charleston is a no-brainer if you’re looking for a lively downtown scene. However, if it’s a quiet beach you seek, our team of Style experts suggest Kiawah, Pawleys Island and Folly Beach, all of which offer a unique beach-town lure necessary for the perfect beach retreat.

GREENVILLE, SC Greenville, SC combines traditional southern charm, stunning natural beauty and is quickly becoming a national destination. With a revitalized downtown that ranked among “America’s Ten Best” by Forbes Magazine, Greenville is a great escape for the Charlotte escape you didn’t know you needed.

SAVANNAH, GA Take the time to wander off the beaten path and experience the history, beauty and culture that Savannah offers. From cobblestone streets and gorgeous public parks to some of the most unique architecture of the South, Savannah is the perfect vacation destination for all ages. The Style team of experts’ insider tip is to visit Tybee Island, known for its wide, sandy beaches, just a short drive from downtown Savannah!

ASHEVILLE, NC Known as an art colony, a healing retreat and a home to notable luminaries, statesmen and bohemians, Asheville is a short 2 hours from Charlotte. The city is one of the most welcoming, vibrant cities in America. Asheville boasts an Theincredible food and beer scene, with places like Wicked Weed Brewing and Curate topping our list. Check out the Biltmore Estate for a taste of North Carolina history and 5-star views. This thriving mountain city should be on the top of everyone’s weekend destination list and is an absolute must for our team of full-time real estate experts.

Dicke ns M itche ne r | Oyster Roast

Dickens Mitchener has always focused on the importance of family. It is a company tradition to have a family friendly event every year where agents can bring their loved ones for an evening of just plain fun. Over the years there have been hay rides to petting zoos for the children, and a few years ago we decided to have an oyster roast in our parking lot because of the convenient location and the casual atmosphere. This year we had nearly 85 agents and their families attend. A

bounce house, corn hole, along with shrimp, hot dogs, oysters (roasted by our very own Broker-InCharge, Jimmy Rountree) and potluck side items were enjoyed by all. To top it all off, we enjoyed refreshments, including a signature DM drink for the event, provided by Jade + May Co. Charlotte’s very own mobile bar service from a 1970s camper. The event gets bigger every year. We can’t wait to see how Jeff Murdock and the DM Social Committee out do themselves for in 2020!

Lenny Boy Brewing Company Kombucha Flight

Lenny Boy Brewing Co. has become synonymous with great beer and tasty kombucha served up in a bright, welcoming space. The South End spot is a fixture in the Charlotte craft beer scene. It’s hard to fathom, then, that the original Lenny Boy was just 2,000-square-feet, serving kombucha only. In 2012, they began brewing beer, and in 2015 Lenny Boy moved into the 31,000-square-foot space that’s home today. It features a spacious patio, a weekly calendar packed with events, and a kitchen (a recent addition). We sit down with founder Townes Mozer to talk about Lenny Boy’s growth, how to best enjoy the space, and his big plans for the brewery he loves.

WHAT VISION DID YOU HAVE IN MIND AS YOU BUILT THE BREWERY? TM: I wanted a welcome home vibe. Kind of rustic, laidback, and not too hoity-toity. Like being in your living room.

WHO WAS LENNY? TM: Lenny was my dog, so the brewery was named after a person’s best friend, both the beer, and the kombucha, and the dog.

IF SOMEONE IS NEW TO LENNY BOY WHAT SHOULD THEY TRY FIRST? TM: Our flagship is Citraphilia, and then we always

have different hazy IPAs on. One is called Send It, which has been really popular, and another is called Name Drop. If you’re going for something dark, we have our classic Burn Down Brown, it’s an English-style Brown Ale with chocolate and toffee notes. Another thing we’re really excited about is our alcoholic kombucha. It’s called Elation, and the one we have on right now has blackberries, boysenberries, and blueberries. The next one will have passionfruit and guava in it. It’s completely gluten-free and has a fruited seltzer flavor profile. Plus, we always have rotating fun sours. The Charlotte brewery scene is robust now, which is wonderful, but it also means there’s more competition.

HOW DO YOU DIFFERENTIATE YOUR BRAND? TM: We’re always coming up with new, fun beers and kombuchas. We’ve delved into fruited and hazy IPAs as of late, and also have tons of different sour beers. We don’t have any one specific style that we’re going for. It’s not all IPAs or lagers or all German beers. We always have a lot of community events and fundraisers, too. We’ve got trivia every Wednesday night. You can get 64-ounce beer growler fill-ups on Fridays for $10. Sundays are 64-ounce kombucha growler fill-ups for $10. We’ve got Run Club on Sundays at 11 am and yoga on Saturdays at 10 am. We try to have something going on every day.

Let’s talk more about kombucha. It’s a huge part of the Lenny Boy brand.

WHAT EXACTLY IS IT? TM: It’s a healthy alternative to soda. It’s in the health beverage category, so it’s got a lot of B vitamins, probiotics, and amino acids. Ours is really low in sugar and it’s fermented for 30-plus days and has over 100 different strands of probiotics in it. Seventy-five percent of your health is found in your gut, so kombucha helps restore that gut health.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO AS LENNY BOY CONTINUES TO GROW? TM: We’re coming out with a bunch of different bottles of sour beer this year. We built a barrel room last year and then this year is the year that all of those beers start coming out of that room, so we’ve got barrel-aged beers ready for their first bottle release in about a month and a half. We’re really excited about that.

WHERE CAN YOU FIND LENNY BOY BEER AND KOMBUCHA IF YOU CAN’T MAKE IT INTO THE BREWERY? TM: You can find us all around the city and throughout North Carolina. Our beers are also distributed throughout South Carolina as well. You’ll find our kombucha at most independent stores in town, as well as at most major grocery stores. You can find our kombucha everywhere from New York to Florida, as our kombucha has a larger distribution footprint than our beer.

A recipe for success (From left to right.) Erin Murray (10 years), Shannon Rodden (24 years), and Liz Gupton (33 years).

Shannon Rodden, Erin Murray, and Liz Gupton have created a recipe for success in home financing. And it is not what you would expect. “The secret sauce” in this recipe includes knowledge and accessibility combined with large helpings of empathy. Simply put, they care and it shows. Because to them, this recipe is not merely a transaction, it’s a way of life — providing customers with the tools and information they need, so they can make informed decisions about their home financing goals. Contagious enthusiasm Customers benefit from their contagious enthusiasm and it shines through in their

accessibility and relentless dedication to meeting their customer’s goals. Shannon is a prime example of that enthusiasm. She was named to Wells Fargo’s President’s Club in 2018. Although Shannon is pleased with the accolade, she doesn’t take this title for granted – she prefers to live a life of gratitude, which she counts as a primary ingredient for success. Her goal is to help as many people as possible with their home financing needs and to share her knowledge in jumbo financing. For Erin, Shannon’s team mate, making a difference in people’s lives is her motivator and the source of her enthusiasm. Erin receives as much joy from

he Catawba River Club is a private gated, 180 acre, 35 home site community carefully designed around this bend of the Catawba’s cool waters, nestled in the foothills of NC. These headwaters have been afforded protected status with the goal of Trophy Trout water designation. While the Catawba is the undeniable cornerstone of the Catawba River Club, the property also directly faces the monuments of the Blue Ridge Mountains: Grandfather, Table Rock, and Hawksbill Mountains. Some home sites overlook the river, some provide awesome views of the mountains, and some include both. The views are breathtaking.
