There are no words to describe 2020 and what has occurred to date. Dickens Mitchener started the year up 33% in sales with so much energy that it was impossible to imagine what would happen in March. Charlotte, NC has been a popular destination in recent years for people to relocate for the thriving business opportunities and quality of life and is still forecasted to uphold that reputation now more than ever. LIVING UP TO THE UPERWOMAN MYTH WORDS BY: SARAH HENDERSON

“I’ve always felt that if you’re not fulfilling all of your needs as an individual, you can never truly be the best version of yourself,” starts Becky Schultz, long-time Dickens Mitchener client. “If a piece of me is missing, I can’t be the best wife or the best mom or even the best employee. That’s why it’s so important for me to have a creative outlet.” By day, Becky is the Marketing Strategy Executive for Merchant Services at Bank of America. By night, she’s the Executive Director of the Charlotte-based Three Bone Theatre. On top of both of those roles, Becky is a full-time wife and mother to her husband, Ben, and their six-year-old son, Max. If ever there was an example of someone living up to the Superwoman myth of “having it all, doing it all, and being it all,” Becky would surely be it. “I’d refer to myself as an ‘accidental banker,’” says Becky. “When I went to school, I was studying to be in the television industry – double majoring in sociology and media management while minoring in entertainment.” Becky had always been involved in the arts community but was particularly interested in the business side. “Basically, my dream was to one day run MTV,” she sums up. But because Becky graduated in December, instead of the traditional midyear graduation timeframe, not that many companies were hiring. “So, I went to an interview on campus with General Electric because (at the time) 6

they owned the NBC Universal business,” Becky recalls. “When I got there, they weren’t hiring for that line of business, but they were hiring for their consumer finance sector." That experience wound up acting as the catalyst that would inevitably launch Becky’s career in the financial industry. Becky stayed with GE for about five years, until she was told her line of business was going to be sold. “I had a decision to make on whether to stay a banker and keep going down this path or start all over,” says Becky. “I made the choice to stick with banking and eventually ended up in Charlotte with Ally Bank, where I stayed for almost 10 years.” While working full-time, Becky completed the Executive MBA program at UNC. Shortly after graduating with her EMBA, Becky married her husband Ben, who works at Wells Fargo. “Once the dust settled, I realized I was missing that artistic outlet,” says Becky. “I was really happy in my new marriage and was doing really well at work, but I needed to satisfy my artistic side as well. I worked with a couple different companies around town but was really looking for a theatre that would feel like home." Then one day in 2012, Becky wandered into Three Bone Theatre for an audition and everything clicked. “I auditioned for Three Bone Theatre’s first production, The Vagina Monologues, and I got cast. It was such a great experience. I loved what the two co-founders were trying to do with the company,” recalls Becky. The theatre is committed to tackling topics that are timely and relevant to Charlotte – to starting conversation and sparking change in the community. “The co-founders asked if I would be interested in running the business side of things. I joined on and have loved being involved ever since.” Shortly after Becky became involved, Three Bone Theatre qualified for 501(c)(3) status; and the company has seen incredible growth over the last eight years. They moved from the second floor of a now-closed performing arts venue to the Duke Energy Theater in Spirt Square run by Blumenthal Performing Arts, where they ended up in residency for four years. The company puts on four main stage shows every year and in addition to producing a great artistic product, for each show, they partner with a local organization that ties in thematically to that topic in an effort to raise awareness of the great work that’s being done in the community. “There was this huge moment of pride for the theatre in November of 2019,” says Becky. “It was our first time doing a world premiere of an original piece. It was a beautiful play written by a local playwright – but it was definitely a risk for us.” Protective Custody PRISONER 34042 is a play based on the memoir of Charlotte-based Holocaust survivor, Dr. Susan Cernyak-Spatz. It speaks to Susan’s personal experiences during the rise of Nazism in Europe and her survival of the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camps. “We didn’t know how it was going to sell, but it wound up being the most successful show we’ve ever done.” Around the same time Becky joined up with Three Bone Theatre, her son Max came along. “Ben and I had started the adoption process right before I got involved with the theatre. I wrapped up that first show in spring of 2013 and then Max was born in October of that same year,” she says. Becky’s commitment to Charlotte and her theatre community had taken hold long before her son was born, but “it took on a new meaning once Max came into our lives. It wasn’t just my and Ben’s community anymore – it became Max’s city,” explains Becky. “Investing time, energy, and resources into Charlotte has a different value now. I’m motivated by my son to make this city a better place for him to live.” In order to find the time, energy, and resources she needs while being the best wife, mother, and employee she can be, Becky relies on her husband. “Ben is my everything. I could never fill both of my roles without his support,” says Becky. “He steps up to bridge those gaps when I’m not able to be at home. Making sure we treat each other as 50/50 teammates, especially when it comes to how our house and our family is run, empowers me to do everything I need to do to feel like a complete person.”

Preheat oven to 350°F. Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper; set aside. In a medium-sized mixing bowl, whisk together the first four ingredients. In a separate large bowl using an electric mixer, cream together the butter and both sugars for about 1-2 minutes or until well combined. Mix in the egg and vanilla extract, stopping to scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed. Slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix on low speed until just combined. Mix in the oats, then the chocolate chips until just combined. Cover tightly and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes. Using a cookie scoop, scoop the dough onto the prepared baking sheets, making sure to leave a little room between each one. Bake at 350°F for 10-13 minutes or until the tops of the cookies are set. Remove from the oven and cool on the baking sheet for 5-10 minutes, then transfer — SUZANNE CODDINGTON, to a wire rack to cool completely.

By using any of the medium or hot instead of mild ingredients above, the chili can be as spicy as you’d like. Bring to boil. Cover and simmer on low, stirring occasionally for 30 minutes to an hour. I let it cook longer so all ingredients will blend. Serve with your choice of toppings: sour cream, shredded cheese, avocado, green onions or corn chips or corn muffins/corn bread. Can be cook in a slow cooker on low for 3-4 hours. I serve this all the time for parties with a sporting event because everyone can eat when they would like! I can even enjoy the game! Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Combine almond flour, baking soda, maple crystals and sea salt in a large mixing bowl. Whisk together egg, olive oil, milk and vanilla extract until combined. Add wet ingredients to dry and stir to incorporate evenly. Stir in chopped chocolate. Make balls using 2 generous scoops of dough and place on baking sheet at least 2-inches apart. Keep your fingers wet with water to prevent sticking. Flatten balls to approximately 1-inch thickness. COVID-19 Guidelines & Relief Efforts Celebrating the start of a new decade back on January 1st of this year feels like a lifetime ago. 2020 started off as a record year in real estate, interest rates were low and the economy was still booming. Fast forward to March and no one could’ve predicted what would soon be happening around the world as we were impacted by the Coronavirus. Every industry has had to set forth new guidelines and procedures as our lives have changed dramatically from COVID-19. Dickens Mitchener was ready at a moment’s notice to send our staff home to work remotely on March 13th due to the technology we already had in place for staff and agents. We have put together strict guidelines for our buyers and sellers as our focus is on keeping our clients and agents safe and healthy while conducting real estate transactions. Please see our COVID-19 guidelines for buyers and sellers on our website. The company has also provided washable masks, gloves, and booties to our agents for them to use while out with clients. We continue to offer virtual showings for our buyers who may not be ready to view a home in person, as well as virtual appointments with our agents, home inspectors, and even virtual closings.

Relief Efforts Dickens Mitchener agents have always had the opportunity to make a donation to a charitable fund at each closing that the company matches. In the past, we have given the donated funds to help the homeless in our community. With the current COVID-19 crisis going on in our country, we decided to make donations to two relief funds in our area for the first quarter of 2020. The newly founded COVID-19 Response Fund was set up by the Foundation for the Carolinas. “This fund will support a range of nonprofits assisting the people most affected by the coronavirus pandemic. Importantly, this fund will help not just those who get sick but also those who are economically impacted."

This fund was launched March 16, 2020 thanks to a $1 million lead gift from LendingTree and a $1 million matching gift from the City of Charlotte. These gifts have inspired additional donations, totaling more than $15 million to date. We were happy to support this fund with a donation. The firm has also donated to the Atrium Health Caregivers Heroes Fund. This fund will be used “to support Atrium Health teammates during the COVID-19 pandemic and other crisis events, as identified by Atrium Health. This fund will support reasonable and necessary personal, family, living, or funeral expenses that teammates incur as a result of COVID-19.”
