History Ballantyne Country Club opened its doors in 1996, but the land where it is located dates back long before. As a matter of fact, the entire Ballantyne area belonged to the grandchildren of the late North Carolina Governor Cameron Morrison. It had been their grandfather’s farm and hunting preserve before they decided to turn it into the development it is today. Charlotte’s history dates back to the city’s incorporation in 1768 when European immigrants bargained for land with the local Native Americans. They named their city for Queen Charlotte of Great Britain, the wife of George III. The years that followed the birth of the new city saw the nation’s first official gold rush and Jefferson Davis’s last official cabinet meeting during the Civil War. When the war ended, Charlotte and the surrounding area became a major railroad city with thriving textile and farming businesses. It was not until the mid to late 1900s that banking became the hottest industry in town. Today, the city is the second-largest banking center, as well as the second-fastest-growing metropolitan area in the country.
