Premier Rachel Notley made the comment in her annual state of the province speech held last October 19 in Calgary’s Jack Singer Concert Hall. Premier Rachel Notley pledged that Alberta will “lead again,” despite the economic challenges it’s facing now. “We’ve taken some hard economic knocks from the international price of oil, but nobody knocks Alberta down for long,” the premier said in

her state of the province address. The crash in oil and natural gas prices has ripped a gaping hole in the government’s budget. Ten years ago, the province derived more than 40 per cent of its

revenue from royalties and other income from non-renewable resources. Last year, it was less than six per cent. “We can handle the current dramatic drop in government revenue — for a time,” she said. “But as our economy improves in coming years, the provincial budget is going to have to come back into balance. That means we can protect health care and education … but that also means we are very unlikely to have headroom for major new spending proposals until recovery arrives.” In her speech, Notley also stressed that while the government won’t inflict deep cuts to get out of the current

recession, public-sector budgets are at their limit and everyone must learn to do more with what they have. Premier Notley also says Alberta will roll out this fall specifics of its plan to phase out coalfired electricity and promote renewable energy. She says the program will include providing financial help to coal emitters to close their plants and transition to cleaner forms of power. There will also be details on how proponents will be able to bid into Alberta’s market to replace the coal generation. Notley’s government has promised to end coalfired electricity generation by 2030.
