The month of October is known as Thanksgiving Month where we thanked God for all He has done for us and for all He has given us. It was also known as a month dedicated to ProLife, to Citizenship, to the Blessed Virgin Mary and as a month of rosary. HOW CAN IT BE ALL RIGHT WHEN EVERYTHING IS ALL WRONG? “When everything is really bad, there is only one word for it - the gift of grace.”

Before I left Philippines after my holiday vacation last April back to Calgary, Alberta, Canada I visited my sister-in-law who is battling the big C in her hospital bed and at home for the remaining days before my flight .The last visit I made was very emotional for me. I remembered the time when I walked away, opened the door and stopped for a moment to look back before I left her. She lifted her head a bit smiled and

waved her hand and said“It’s all right!” and as I looked over my shoulder, she left me the haunting heritage of that commonplace words “It’s all right”. YOLLIE’S words have haunted me ever since, and have become a metaphor of life’s deepest question. How can anyone really believe that it is all right when everything is hopelessly wrong? Then, while here in Canada I kept in touch with her through the FB, chat and phone calls our way of connecting with each other and her family. When her journey was near to end there was no

more words from her, we continued the connection with my brother about her condition. Later after eight months she died. I saw and feel the loss, affected us so much despite the knowledge of knowing she would live for six to eight months as predicted by her doctor. I knew that it was not all right. It was all wrong. It was all wrong for my brother, my nephews and her grandchildren. It was all wrong for her sisters and friends. I cried my pitiful complaints to God that it was all wrong for me. I knew I was going to be put through the wringer of this terrible question for a long time to come. How can we be ground down in pain and grief and death and still believe that it is all right at the center of life? The answer must be blowing somewhere in the winds of grace. Have you ever noticed how commonplace come alive as uncommon truth when they come at just the right time? What a trite comfort! “Its all right” A cliché of reas-

surance about things a lot less than life or death, about life at its depths. The word “grace” has often been no more than a commonplace pleasantry. St. Paul picked up the old bromide from a trivial custom of his time and closed of his letters with a variation on the “grace” theme. “Grace be with you” What a cliché! You could have heard it everywhere but now St. Paul rescued the anemic commonplace dipped it into a whole new reality and made it a signal of God’s assurance that- Life can be all right just when everything in it is all wrong. The reality of Jesus transformed the cliché of grace into the reality of God. Coming into our time, our history, our lives, to make things right at the center , HE came as a living person called JESUS, talking and hurting and dying and coming to life again. HIS mission is to bring grace to the world, and so in the deepest reality of life to make it all right precisely when things are all wrong. Grace? It is short-

hand for everything that GOD is and does for us in our tired and sinful broken lives. Grace be to you! It’s alright even though it’s all wrong. Commonplace? No more. There are some hints about how grace works. Grace does not make everything right. Grace trick is to show us that it is right for us to live, that it is truly good, wonderful even for us to be breathing and feeling at the same time, that everything clustering around us is wholly wretched. Grace is not a ticket to fantasy land .It is not a potion to charm life to our liking. It does not cure all our concerns transform our children into winners, or send us all soaring into the high skies of sex and success. Grace is an amazing power to look earthly reality full in the face, see its sad and tragic edges, feel its cruel cuts, join in the primeval chorus against its outrageous unfairness, and yet feel in your deepest being that it is good and right for you to be alive on God’s good earth. So, to see life very

clearly I suggest, to admit it. That it is sometimes all wrong, and still know that somehow, in the center of your life, “Its all right”. This is what we call--- amazing grace. I heard in one of the inspirational talks of L.B.Smedes- he cited three faces of grace that gave impact to my being. The three profiles of God’s amazing way of getting to us when we are down. 1. Grace is pardon-the bedrock of grace is the amazing gift of knowing that it is all right with us personally when we know that a lot of things are wrong with us. Grace will come and convince us at the depths of our soul that its all right even though a lot is wrong with us. It will happen to us, to you and will know it, feel it, live it when God persuades you that, as far as HE is concerned, in spite of everything, all is right with you. 2. Grace is power—This is to lead us closer to HIS image and make us better person today than we were yesterday. The power to make us better continued on page 13

ZAMBALES ASSOCIATION OF CALGARY (ZAMBALAC) SENIORS INFORMATION AND RETREAT OCTOBER 4 - 5, 2014 AT FANTASYLAND HOTEL, EDMONTON A NARRATIVE REPORT BY SANTA AQUINO-POSADAS

The opportunities for seniors are greater more than any other time in history and it is up to us to make use of these opportunities. There is nothing more beautiful in this world than a healthy, happy worthy, wise old woman/man. DAY 1---- Saturday, October 4-----The meeting place of the senior participants in the information and retreat took place 6:00 AM at SEARS Marlborough Mall. The National Tourist bus arrived just on the exact time. Besides the senior participants, we were joined in by some associates and volunteers of the association to assist us in our luggages, food and needs during the duration of the trip. Cheryle Posadas-Guinsatao, the PRO of Zambalac, laid out some rules and schedules to be observed so there will be system and order and to maximize the time allotted for the side tour and workshop properly. Mr. Romy Guinsatao Sr., one of the board of directors of Zambalac and in-charge of the Zambalac Seniors checked the attendance and led the prayer. The first stop was Red Deer, the host of 2016 Winter Games. We went to the Tourism Red Deer building where the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame and Museum was housed. While waiting to open we took our time picture-taking around the vicinity and have our packed breakfast ordered from Barrio Fiesta and distributed by Janette Ragadio with the help of some associates. Then, we were led by a Canadian Guide named Kim and given a brief overview and information on the history of Canadian famous athletes in different category of sports such as ice hockey, golf, curling and other sport games. We were proud to have Gilmore Junio’s sportsmanship mentioned in her introduction. There were many collections and attractions; we experienced the wheelchair challenge and played golf. We toured the museum and saw many awards and distinctions given to the athletes who excelled in their own sports. The group arrived 11:00 AM at Fantasyland Hotel Edmonton. Nora Ragadio, the President of Zambales Association met and

welcomed us at the lobby. We didn’t worry of our luggages since it was all endorsed to Mr. Rey Guinsatao and Freshnel Corpuz, two of the associates of the association. We were directly advised to proceed to the conference hall no. 9. The welcoming committee headed by event coordinator Marietta Dutkoski and Kaizen Crew staffs assisted us in the registration for our tag identification card. On the table we were given our workshop paraphernalias and program schedule. A sumptuous buffet lunch was served as a working lunch conference. For team building purpose, we were grouped according to numbers one, two and three. The session started with the introduction of the resource guest speaker, Mr. Romeo Honorio, writer of Open Visa and a well received speaker in the Filipino community in Alberta., The morning topic he cited was on the definition of a senior. He gave us firsthand information on the aging population statistically with use of power point technically handled by the help of Genina Guinsatao, a Zambalac youth volunteer. The most interesting part which he presented with his humorous style was how can senior be productive, healthy, happy and active. He suggested ways and means like staying active and staying engaged. It is enlightening to note how the speaker gave some basic instructions before leaving the earth. The most appreciative and challenging for our team building were the meaningful and symbolic games he demonstrated to the delight of the seniors, like Catch Me If You Can and the Strings of Life and Untangled. The game emphasized and showed us how seniors can have a more happy and meaningful life. The afternoon session is a continuation of Mr. Honorio’s topic on What It Means To Be a Senior in Canada. Again the group was divided but

in colors like green, yellow and purple. Each group was given to work and brainstorm on the team topic that will present by a selected representative of the group afterwards. The topic for the first group –Sabi ni Lola, sabi ni Lolo; the second topic-Tanungin mo mga bata, and the third topic---Kami’y mga Pinoy, Kami’y di laos. All the topics assigned will reveal the wisdom, experiences and knowledge of each senior in the group especially on what they can contribute to their family, to their community and to their country, Philippines and Canada. After the session we were given the key to our room in the hotel. Two seniors are assigned in a room. We went up to our respective assigned rooms. It was a big and spacious room with two separate queen beds. After settling our things in the room, we were given options on how we can use some of the time we have before the night session. It was either shopping or roaming the mall, or staying in their room to rest and get ready. Some opted to get a nap, while some of the lady seniors have an afternoon beauty rest and prepared their get-up dress for the fellowship night. At 6:30 PM we were in the conference room. The ever energetic Marietta and the associates welcomed us with necklace lei. The motif of the night –masquerade style so there were masks, crowns, and head gears of different shapes and colorful decors. Everybody came in full gala attire. There were lady seniors who preferred to wear their Filipiniana costume. A photo booth outside the conference was provided with Mr. Mark Dutkoski and Andy Chua incharge for the documentation purposes for the association. The night brought the seniors and Zambales staff, members and associates together in the three categories presentation. While having the buffet dinner the group decided on their representative for

the Karaoke Challenge, the Impersonation Challenge and the Line Dancing Challenge. The very touching part was when Mr. Manny Pia sang the Autumn Leaves, full of emotion with his own version of narration dedicating the song to his late beloved wife and vice

president of ZAMBALAC, Evelyn Pia. For that rendition, he won over his two opponents- me and Lydia Pagaling. In the acting impersonation challenge, it was the group who impersonated the acting of Nora Aunor. Adelina Cruzada won over the

two contestants, with the “Walang Himala!” phrase that alone give an impact to the judges and to the audience. In the line dancing challenge at first, Mr Felix Guerrero headed the three rows in the dancing and after elimination only two continued on page 06

Chef Ben Joy M. Dola is the 8th generation chef in a family with exceptional culinary background. He is the grandson of late executive chef Bernardo Dola. Savoury Entree:Asian Salmon Dinner Ingredients: 90 grams Salmon fillet 2 Tablespoons Carrots 2 Tablespoons Celery 2 Tablespoons Mushroom, sliced. 2 Tablespoons Red Peppers, sliced 1/4 cup Bean Sprout 2 Tablespoons Sesame Oil Marinade: 2 Tablespoons Hoisin Sauce 2 Tablespoons Sambal Oelek (Indonesian Chili Sauce) 2 Tablespoons Ginger. puree 2 Tablespoons Sesame Oil 2 Tablespoons Ket Jap Wanis (Indonesian Ketchup) 2 Tablespoons Salt and Pepper coarse pinched 1 teaspoon, Juice of Lemon 1 cup cooked rice with chopped parsley

Garnishing: 2 Tablespoons Green Onions (chiffonadesliced thinly) Procedure: 1. Mix all marinade ingredients 2. Add Salmon Filet and marinate for 10 minutes. Heat skillet on a medium heat, Add sesame oil. Pan fry salmon one minute each side to deglazed until golden brown . Set aside. Using the same skillet, saute all vegetables. Arrange vegetables on a plate, topped with salmon and green onions. Add steam rice on the side and serve while hot. Yield: 1 serving

When he is not busy in the kitchen, he made sure to spend quality time with his family who recently joined him in his Canadian journey.

Salmon fillet pinch of salt pinch of pepper 1/3 cup Mixed Greens (Artisan, Urgula, Romaine) Lettuces 2 Tablespoons Canola Oil 1 Tablespoon Pumpkin Seed 1 Tablespoon Dried Cranberries 1 Tablespoon almonds, toasted Slices of Lemon Wedge (optional) for garnishing Dressing: 1/4 cup Sherry vinegar 2 Tablespoons Honey 1 Tablespoon Red Onion, sliced thinly 1/8 teaspoon Mustard Seed 1 sprig of of Parsley 1/2 cup Canola Oil

Procedure: Season salmon season with salt and pepper. Using medium heat, pan fry until well seared Set aside. 3. On a medium bowl mix well all greens and lettuce. Combine pumpkin seeds, dried cranberries and toasted almond. 5. Blend sherry vinegar, honey, red onion, mustard seed and parley in a food processor. 6. Gradually add canola oil until dressing emulsifies Toss salad greens and mix with nuts and dressing. Place cooked salmon on top Garnish with lemon wedge if desired. Serve immediately. A BEAUTIFUL FILIPINO RELIGIOUS TRADITION

SIMBANG GABI is one of the longest and most popular among the Filipino traditions in the Philippines. It is when Catholic churches across the nation start to open their doors shortly before the break of dawn to welcome the faithful to the Simbang Gabi mass. The custom lasts for nine days, starting on December 16 up to December 24 during which Filipinos attend dawn masses, usually starting at around 4:00 - 5:00 AM. After the mass, families and friends partake of a hearty breakfast of Filipino pastries and delicacies. This practice started centuries ago during the Spanish colonial period. Priests held early dawn masses for the farmers who wanted to attend mass but could not leave their work in the rice fields. These masses were held before daybreak, hence the Filipino term ‘Simbang Gabi’. This nine-day novena culminates with the ‘Misa de Aguinaldo’ before midnight on Christmas Eve to welcome the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ Simbang Gabi is not just a tradition that is celebrated because Filipinos need to do so. It is a significant moment not only because it strengthens relationships among family members and the community but also because it is a time when our faith is intensified. This is the time when we mostly feel the presence of the Lord because it is the spiritual preparation for Christmas, the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Couples for ChristAnswering the Cry of the Poor (CFC-ANCOP)started its immersion program by responding to the call of the Calgary’s poor. With its core members and volunteers, CFC-ANCOP helped out in the Inn from the Cold Program by serving a sumptuous roast beef dinner last October 19. Inn From the Cold provides temporary emergency shelter to homeless families

through two different programs, a permanent facility in the Beltline and when that’s full, temporary shelter at various churches and community associations across the city. This year is shaping up to be the most challenging year in the organization’s 17-year history — already Inn From the Cold has seen double the number of people the organization saw in all of 2013.

“People are absolutely terrorized by this market. Looking for rental housing is like a sport now. It’s so competitive,” said Linda McLean, Inn From the Cold executive director. “It’s a cattle call when you go out to do viewings. People are basically pleading their case with landlords.” Inn From the Cold has been overcapacity every day in 2014 and staff

All those who wore the Filipiniana dress were lined up requested them to model in front of the audience. After elimination, it was Nenita LiwanagBumanglag who coveted the title because of her regal bearing, her waving hand and her captivating smile all through the night. She was crowned and congratulated by the officers and judges. After an hour of dancing spree everybody retired to their respective rooms bringing to their hearts and mind the happy, enjoyable moments they will cherish for the rest of their lives. Day 2—Sunday, October 5—Time to pack our things and luggages. We settled them all in the conference

room then have our coffee/ tea time and have group photo. The session was opened by Marietta and she presented the next resource guest speaker and the topic. Sherissa A. Celis, the senior program and legal education program coordinator of Calgary Catholic Immigration Society (CCIS) talked on the Seniors Benefits and Wills and Personal Directives. It was a working brunch but it doesn’t matter because the topic was timely and the seniors need it especially those who are not aware and fully informed about the benefits they should be getting from the federal government and local government. The speaker mentioned about the CCP the OAS benefits with corresponding examples and explanation for them to understand citing on a case to case basis situation of the seniors. Among the

many questions asked by the seniors was about the Making of Wills and Personal directives the session was very informative and beneficial. An evaluation sheet was distributed for us to fill in. It was closed with remarks by the Vice President Felix Guerrero and Kaizen Crew Coordinator Marietta Dutkoski. The group was advised that they can still use their remaining hours before departure back to Calgary. Some stayed at the lobby of the hotel, others explored the mall especially the Sta Maria board ship, the waterpark, the shopping stores and the Africa displays and more picture-taking. We left Edmonton at 1:30 PM and arrived safely at 4:00 PM. The two-day happenings we have were really rewarding and fulfilling. It was really worth it!

Bill C-24: New Rules regarding Canadian Citizenship applications As a Permanent Resident you cannot vote and you can still be ordered to leave Canada under some circumstances. To receive all the benefits of being a Canadian, you have to apply to become a Canadian Citizen. On June 19, 2014 the Canadian government passed Bill C-24 a new law that introduced several significant changes to the Canadian Citizenship Act. The changes are designed to strengthen the rules regarding access to Canadian citizenship to ensure that new citizens are better prepared for full participation and integration into Canadian society. The changes include the following: Clarifying the meaning of being resident in Canada; Modifying the period during which a permanent resident must reside in Canada before they may apply for citizenship; Expediting access to citizenship for persons who are serving in, or have served in, the Canadian Armed Forces; Requiring that an applicant for citizenship demonstrate, in one of Canada’s official languages, knowledge of Canada and of the responsibilities and privileges of citizenship; Specifying the age as of which an applicant for citizenship must demonstrate the knowledge about Canada and demonstrate an adequate knowledge of one of Canada’s official languages; Requiring that an applicant meet any applicable requirement under the Income Tax Act to file a return of income; Conferring citizenship on certain individuals and their descendants who may not have acquired citizenship under prior legislation; Extending an exception to the first-generation limit to citizenship by descent to children born to or adopted abroad by parents who were themselves born to or adopted abroad by Crown servants; and Requiring, for a grant of citizenship for an adopted person, OLD RULES

• Residence for three (3) out of four (4) years (1,095 days); • No requirement that resident be physically present; • Time as a nonpermanent resident (non-PR) may be counted toward residence for citizenship; • No intent to reside provision • Adult applicants aged 18–54 must meet language requirements and pass knowledge test; upper age limit of 54 currently established by policy, not in legislation; • Applicants can meet knowledge requirement with assistance of an interpreter

BILL C-24 (NEW)

• Requires physical presence for four (4) years (1,460 days) out of the six (6) years; • 183 days minimum of physical presence per year in four out of six years; • Eliminates use of time spent in Canada as a non-permanent resident (non-PR); • Introduces “intent to reside” provision • Requires applicants aged 14–64 to meet language requirements and pass knowledge test; • Applicants must meet knowledge requirement in English or French

• Consultants not required to be registered or regulated in order to represent individuals in citizenship manner; • No penalties for unlicensed consultants who charges fees to clients • Few tools to deter fraud and ensure program integrity; • Fines and penalties for fraud are a maximum of $1,000 and/or one year in prison only

• Defines who is an authorized representative and provides authority to develop regulations to designate a regulatory body whose members would be authorized to act as consultants in citizenship matters; • CIC will also develop regulations to specify what information applicants must include in their applications, including identifying their representative or consultant. Failure to provide this information may result in the return of their application. This will help Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) enforce the new provisions relating to authorized representatives.

In addition to the above, there also changes with regards to the processing of citizenship applications and the review of decisions made such as: Requiring that an application must be complete to be accepted for processing; Expanding the grounds and period for the suspension of applications and providing for the circumstances in which applications may be treated as abandoned; Limiting the role of citizenship judges in the decision-making process, subject to the Minister periodically exercising his or her power to continue the period of application of that limitation; Giving the Minister the power to make regulations concerning the making and processing of applications; Providing for the judicial review of any matter under the Act and permitting, in certain circumstances, further appeals to the Federal Court of Appeal; and Transferring to the Minister the discretionary power to grant citizenship in special cases. To summarize the changes, listed below is a table that compares the old rules versus the new provisions in Bill C-24: OLD RULES

If we know that it will cause harm more than good to the community we edit it so it will not cause that much damage. Between issues and sentiments, Diaryo Filipino will rather focus on issues. A sentiment is defined as a thought, view, or attitude, especially one based mainly on emotion instead of reason. It is a view of or attitude toward a situation or event; an opinion. An issue is a matter of concern or of interest. Often people have different opinions about an issue and will discuss or argue about it in order to find a solution. An issue is something that causes debate and divides people. But some issues can be broken into smaller problems that can be solved by asking questions that can be answered easily. Problems

typically can be solved by asking, how can something be solved. If it can be answered then the problem is solved. I am convinced we will all benefit if suspicion is replaced by discussion, innuendo by dialogue. And if we do it right- if we’re not afraid even when the truth is complex- this issue, by clarification can bring relief to untold numbers of confused as well as to many others who want only to make our already great community even stronger than it is. We should help people to ask themselves a simple question- that is: “If we turn our backs on the most vulnerable- the aged, the young, the retarded, the disabled, those without status- then who will speak for us should we find ourselves weak or dependent?

The land of our birth and the home of our people can not be removed regardless in the heart and mind of Filipinos. We may differ in value, style and belief, but our sense of belonging to our dear old bayang magiliw will never ever fade. It is carved deeply in us whenever or wherever fate brings us to bear. Years may come and go and though under the statute of distant land, we persistently adhere to remain as children of the motherland. Nothing in this world can take it away. We are still Filipinos. True that at times we quarrel. We patch up our differences to quarrel again. It is a normal customary routine, the very nature of our togetherness as a community. However, we stick and stand jointly when someone maligns and dishonour the land that gave us life. We listen not on reason. It is not necessary. We just react. We deem this as profanity on our heritage and therefore our innate responsibility to defy. Is this patriotism or just plain hypocrisy? It does not matter. It is what we are. This is what multi-culturalism is all about and Canada is a multicultural country with equal rights to one and all. There are pros and cons on this. This was also a subject often pondered during the Quebec separation referendum that had it not to Filipino-Canadians in Montreal, Canada is not what it is today. Looking from hindsight, we could say that this was our greatest contribution. When the Canadian Federation was teetering of being fractionalized by a hairline split, ten thousand Filipino-Canadians in Montreal exercised their rights by going out to vote ‘NO’ to Quebec separation referendum. The Federation of Canada was saved by what the premier of Quebec called after as ‘ethnics’ of Montreal. Yes, Canada owed us something and needs no back favour because we too are Canadians. These rights were not just awarded freely as a gift. It was won by works of many. We should value it for this defines our existence as to what and who we are. It was mostly on this regard why the Congress of Filipinos in Calgary (CFIC) was concerned when naturalized Canadian citizens be stripped off their Canadian citizenship upon conviction of serious crimes. We believe that a Canadian citizen is a Canadian citizen period. A CFIC committee was formed to talk with the author of this bill, MP Davinder Shorey of Northeast Calgary Constituency. Mr. Shorey assured us that there’s nothing to worry about it because his bill is exclusively confined in the area of terrorism and is only applicable to Canadians with dual citizenship. In the same token that we also addressed the veracity of a story circulating around that babies born in Canada from non-Canadians or landed immigrants parents are no longer Canadian citizens. He told us that there never was such a thing. It doesn’t exist. Mr. Davinder Shorey’s statement was in contrast with another member of parliament. We left this issue open-ended until we are fully satisfied. It is also our right to demand as a community

the safety of Filipinos in Calgary. CFIC is concerned about the congested exit condition of parishioners that are about all Filipinos at the noon Sunday mass at St. Mark Catholic Parish Church. CFIC fears that if panic exit from whatever cause may occur, mostly at the balcony section, parishioners could stampede out with unimaginable hurt or even lost of lives to many. This issue is already with the administration of St. Mark Church with very little result. It does not resolve current condition. It will be discussed again for further action at the 5th session of the Filipino Community Assembly. We will not give up on this for as long as our community members are in imminent danger. CFIC also listened to numerous sad stories on alleged anomalies of Filipino employees concerning visa applications at the Canadian Embassy in Manila. We forwarded our concerns to the foreign affair parliament secretary for Africa and Asia. We received confirmation from the Canadian government that they will look into it seriously. The Canadian ambassador to the Philippines also have a copy of our complaint. We will follow this up from time to time. These rights can also be thwarted to some bizarre ways at times. A good example was what allegedly transpired at the Joint Filipino Seniors Summer Picnic last August. A story surfaced that a petition went around for signatures on what the seniors believed was the attendance sheet. It was learnt after that it was to support the lifting of the suspension of our honorary consul, Ferdie Aguirre. The veracity of this was entirely nonsensical as Consul Ferdie Aguirre never ever was suspended. Somewhere down the line was a serious disconnect in the interpretation of events.

Correction/Erratum: This is regarding the editorial Blind Obedience written by Cheryle Posadas Guinsatao and printed last August 2014. “....that was clearly manifested recently during the Filipino Seniors Picnic where a paper was passed around asking for signatures. Since some started signing it others follow thinking that they are signing an attendance sheet. After everyone signed it, one senior leader of the community explained that the signatures will show support in the lift of the suspension of the Honorary Consul Ferdie Aguirre...” Hon. Con. Aguirre was not suspended but under investigation due to a petition and several complaints, phone calls and e-mails receive by the office of Consul General Neil Ferrer in Vancouver. Suspension from his position maybe one of the steps taken if those complaints were proven true. The petition circulating at that time is to counter the first petition that is circulating against Hon. Con. Aguirre.

Giving back to God By Fr. Edmund F. Vargas

In a real way, giving thanks to God is to “repay to God what belongs to God”. (Matthew 22:21) Religion as such can be defined as an act of justice, that is, giving back to God what is due to Him. Besides giving back to God what belongs to Him, Christian religion offers us the values that are essential to good living and human happiness. It can be said that that the core of the Canadian heritage is the spiritual vision of life based on Christian revelation. As Christians, no person can be more important in our life than Christ Himself. Our Christian life is all about possessing God’s kingdom in our respective lives. I remember one advice in a course in Moral Theology when dealing with the intentionality of the moral act. The criterion would be to ask the question: “Is this necessary in order to posses the kingdom of God or in the language of tradition religion “to go to heaven”? This traditional approach to religion and morality is enhanced with the personal component in Christian spirituality. The intention becomes intense and immense when it is related to a person. An act

becomes more meaningful and thus worth doing when it is done for the sake of person, and not for some theoretical principle. Christian spirituality is about centering our life on Christ. What we do in the context of our Christian life is an outward expression of our personal commitment to Christ. We do everything for him, making him the moving inspiration of our every though, word and deed. Christ becomes the supreme and ultimate value. He is the value of values. Marriage or ministry is transformed into sacramental expression of Christ’s action in the world. Love for family or country is elevated to the level of divine love that has been shared with us through Christ. Our love for Christ enhances all our other loves. And it is in loving other for the sake of Christ that enable us to love without measure, making us love even those who are unlovable. Human love is strengthened by the grace of God through Christ. If we consider Christ as the value of values to be pursued, other values are placed in the proper perspective. Let me end this reflection by quoting one of the more powerful statements of St. Augustine: “Christ is not valued at all unless he is valued above all.”

40 years ago my family lived in a bamboo house. My parents were so proud to have this kind of dwelling. Of course it was the only abode they could afford then. In my high school days, my practical teacher gave me an excellent grade for my bamboo basket project. The capacity of the basket was limited to a bunch of vegetables, five eggs, two tilapias, and three kilos of rice. When my elder sister broke her bamboo bank, she bought me a pair of slippers. My daily walk to school was less stressful on my heels. The mark of bamboo stick on my butt was the turning point in my teen life. If not for that rod of discipline from my dad, my life could have been

different from what I am today. Tough love from both mom and dad has developed in me the value of obeying authority. Bamboo was the instrument. Even today, the use of bamboo is very prominent. I still prefer pork BBQ on bamboo stick. What about our very own “Lechon”? Bamboo has its unique character in terms of function and versatility. Its sturdiness and usefulness sometimes gets overlooked, but there is no substitute to a bamboo tooth picks and chopsticks. Bamboo’s concert last September 27th at the Century Casino was a sold out event. His popularity is like the tallest bamboo in the Philippines. Fans left the place fully entertained.

It was around 7:30 on a September Tuesday morning when my daughter and I were breaking the fast at McDonald’s. Half way with our breakfast she asked me a question that was out of the ordinary. “Dad, how does it feel being old?” That morning I turned “nth” years old. With seriousness, she wanted to know what I felt at this age. “Physically, there are changes going on. You and your mom are witnesses to these changes.” I responded to her with my mouth half full. Months ago I suffered from heel pain and for quite some time the pain travels on and off to my right knee. I wonder if the problem is with the unevenness of the street or my wobbling knee. My doctor’s advice has me on Tylenol Arthritis. The time with my daughter was the prelude to my encounter with the Zambales Seniors’ Association of Calgary on October 4th at Fantasyland Hotel in Edmonton. The group’s Retreat and Information catered to their need for connection and information. I tried my best to share with them

both issues and insights on becoming seniors in Canada, though I’m years away from this age group. The participants had a great time learning more about themselves (ourselves). It was a pure joy to see elders having fun interacting, bonding and playing together. One of the things that made this gathering noteworthy was the report released by HelpAge International 2014 Global AgeWatch Index. The index ranked 96 countries, or 91% of the world’s older population in relation to “policies toward pensions, health, education, employment, and the social environment in which older people live”. Canada (4th place) trails just behind Norway, Sweden and Switzerland. So the question of where to grow old (senior years) is now settled. The theme of the evening gathering was Mardi gras. People arrived on time for the event with their best gowns and suits. “Hindi pa kami laos”, quipped one senior. Indeed, they were gorgeous men and women

of age. Kaizen’s Crew Coach, the group that made this retreat and gathering possible, addressed with grace and effectiveness the needs and expectations of the group. One highlight of our Mardi gras was the Karaoke challenge. Kuya Manny’s rendition of a love song was touching. He substituted (his wife’s name) to a word in the song to reaffirm his feeling and longings for his wife who passed away a year ago. Kuya Manny is legally blind but his heart is beating perfectly fine, winning in karaoke and winning in life. With Kaisen’s competent handling of this retreat and information session, I believe Zambales Seniors’ Association is now more ready and prepared for the challenges ahead of them. I’d say this kind of indepth and fun interaction is like a shot in the arm (a good kind). Culture Day in High River The forecast was not sunny. Traffic on QE11 heading south was light. Rain droplets were sliding swiftly away from my windshield as we cruised at 120 Km/Hr. We were 15 minutes away from Culture Centre in High River. September is the month for Culture days in Alberta. Across the province, towns and cities celebrate the province’s great and diversified cultures. Arts, literary, dances, songs and other form of human and cultural expressions are showcased for people to appreciate and enjoy. The table assigned to

me at the Centre was a foot away from the main door. The parking spots across the street started to disappear and the rain started to subside. Inside the hall were artists with their masterpieces. A number of kids were in one corner trying their little fingers to get acquainted with paint brushes and colours. A number of passersby were drawn to Open Visa with its intent to tell of the lives and plight of those coming to Canada from abroad. Interestingly, the stories within the novel are

uniquely interwoven much like the colours that blend and overlap in the paintings of the other exhibits. As Culture Days wrapped up we came away with a few observations. Calgary is home to more than 25,000 Filipinos. Roughly 850 Filipinos are working in Cargill Foods in High River. In general a large number of Asian immigrants are residents of this town. Evidently, the community is culturally diverse. We are known for rich and unique cultural heritage. Our music, arts, dances continued from page 17

Citizenship Week 2014 marks massive changes imposed. Canada’s citizenship program is being improved by reducing the decisionmaking process from three steps to one. It is expected that, by 2015–2016, this change will bring the average processing time for citizenship applications down to under a year. It is also projected that by 2015-2016, the current backlog will be reduced by more than 80 percent. The following are the new changes under the New Citizenship Act; a.)Requiring 14-64 year-olds to meet knowledge and language requirements provides an incentive for more individuals to acquire official language proficiency and civics knowledge, which helps them successfully integrate into Canadian society. b.) Citizenship applicants will need to be physically present in Canada for a total of four out of their last six years. In addition, they will need to be physically present in Canada for 183 days

per year for at least four of those six years. These provisions will come into force in approximately a year. Under the new streamlined decisionmaking model, citizenship officers will decide all aspects of a citizenship application. Under the old model, obtaining citizenship was a three-step process that involved duplication of work. c.)Since 2006, Canada has welcomed over 1,300,000 proud new Canadians. Citizenship and Immigration Canada received 333,860 citizenship applications in 2013, the highest volume ever. “C a n a d i a n citizenship is incredibly valuable, and our Government’s changes to the Citizenship Act will help protect our citizenship system from abuse and uphold the integrity of Canadian citizenship. As Citizenship Week draws to a close, this is an ideal time for all Canadians to reflect on the high

value of our citizenship,” said Chris Alexander, Canada’s Citizenship and Immigration Minister. Canada’s Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, Chris Alexander, also outlined how and why Canada is moving to a new immigration selection system, known as ‘Express Entry’, at a Canadian HR Conference in Regina, Saskatchewan. Express Entry will come into operation as of January 1, 2015. “We have been stuck in the 1970s, maybe even the 1960s, in immigration, receiving applications in a mechanical, robotic way from whoever happened to apply,” said Mr. Alexander. “We couldn’t predict who would apply from year to year, but we were obliged by law to process every application that came in, in the order it was received.” The Minister stated that Canada was moving from a supply-driven system to a demand-driven one that actively selects candidates based on

needs identified by the federal government and provincial government, as well as Canadian employers. Express Entry — which is not a program, but rather a selection system, as Mr. Alexander explicitly pointed out — will apply existing economic immigration programs to a large group of candidates. These programs are the Federal

Skilled Worker Program, the Federal Skilled Trades Program, and the Canadian Experience Class. “The immigrants that we actually invite to come to Canada, the ones whose applications we actually process, are the ones we know we actually need,” said Mr. Alexander. Mr. Alexander admitted that provinces, including Saskatchewan, have

been seeking a greater quota of places under the Provincial Nomination Program. He stated, however, that the Express Entry system will be able to mitigate any concern. “Saskatchewan would be an excellent candidate to join us and put their provincial nominations against people who will be in this Express Entry pool,” he said.
