Live-in requirement scrapped from the2013 Vol. 4.07 | November new Canada caregiver program

Canada’s Citizenship and Immigration Minister, Chris Alexander, announced last October 31, 2014 significant reforms to the Caregiver Program that acknowledges the valuable contributions caregivers make to Canadian families and the economy.

Changes to the program include ending the live-in requirement, and providing eligible caregivers with two pathways that will lead to permanent residence within six months.

Various comments surfaces after the announcement, all showing support on the major change on the live in requirement abolishment. “The biggest

Forget Me Not

Many events had taken place in our life. Sometimes we were distracted with the rate of change life brings to the world that we tend to forget the lessons these events represented.

At the start of the month of November, we got caught up in the death of 53 year old Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent who died after being hit by a car driven by an attacker with known jihadist sympathies. He was killed on Oct. 20 in the parking lot of a shopping mall in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, southeast of Montreal. Another soldier was injured after what authorities said was a deliberate attack by Martin Couture-Rouleau, who was eventually shot by police. Two days later, Cpl. Nathan Cirillo was fatally shot while standing sentry at the National War Memorial in Ottawa before his attacker, Michael Zehaf Bibeau, was himself killed in a dramatic shootout in

the halls of the Parliamentary Buildings. Remembrance Day is of special significance whether we are 10th generation Canadians or new Canadians.

It is important to “honour the thousands of Canadians who risked their lives and all those who lost their lives, to defend freedom and democracy. This year’s Remembrance Day was especially poignant given Cirillo and Vincent’s tragedies. This year we pay special tribute to the courage and dedication of Corporal Nathan Cirillo and Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent, who lost their lives while serving on home soil. As Canadians may we strive together to make a lasting peace in the world. We must never forget the cost of war.

Then there is the story of 29 years old Britanny Maynard who was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer — grade 4 astrocy-

toma or glioblastoma — a diagnosis that had left her with its own death sentence, and six months to live. She was about to enter a period of suffering and horrible seizures, while losing grasp of everything she once knew. Doctors told her in April 2014 that she only had weeks remaining during which she could be on her feet; soon she would be bedridden. But as an adventurer, Maynard didn’t heed their warnings, and continued to complete 10-mile hikes, and travel with her loved ones, well into her last weeks in October 2014. Between these excursions, she had moved with her family to Oregon, a state where physicianassisted suicide, or “Death With Dignity,” was legal.

During this time, she had also decided that Nov. 1 would be the day for her to die. After a day, she pursued this declaration and died November 2, 2014.

Maynard appeared to be a confident woman. She was courageous, certain of herself and her place in life, and knew what she wanted.

Perhaps it’s these qualities that led her to her decision to “die with dignity” and refresh the Death With Dignity movement across the United States. There are currently three states in the U.S. that have passed Death With Dignity laws, allowing physicians to prescribe terminally ill patients with lifeending drugs. Those states are Oregon, Washington, and Vermont.

Many argued over what defines “dignity” and what it means, exactly to die with it. Dying with dignity, in Brittany Maynard’s mind, implies that taking control of her situation and dying on her own terms is the best possible solution to her diagnosis. Having control over your own death may not be “natural” per se, but it can be compas-

November Bliss “In every season of life there is bliss and grace to be grateful for.”

It is the month of November, a month that brings blissful life for us. Derick and his wife Melody was grateful to my daughter Cheryle and her family who joyfully welcomed the ten days vacation and visit of my son, to Calgary, Alberta, Canada. I felt much more to delight and joy by the bonding that we have for each other. I have many moments / time in my life that I should be very grateful to the many blessings and graces bestowed upon me and to my family.

Gratitude to God

How many of us truly and constantly realize the bounty of God to us? I bear with great fear when

I see a lack of gratitude.

Think about it, meditate about it, pray about it, do something about it. Ours are frightening times and God is good to us. Do we realize what we have? It is time we should. The time is now. May our Lord open your hearts to gratitude.

May St. Martin de Porres fire up this tremendously needed virtue of gratitude among us.

What is your legacy? How will you be remembered?

Life is but a stopping place, a pause in what is to be a resting place along the road to sweet eternity?

We all have different journeys, different paths along the way. We all are meant to learn some things, but never meant to why our destination is a place for greater than we know. For

some the journey is quicker. For some the journey is slow, and when the journey finally ends, we will claim a great reward and find an everlasting place together with the LORD and unknown. “A welllived life that is of service to God, to one’s country, to one’s family and fellowmen is a life of significance.

We should be guided by the quote anonymously as we go through our journey of life.

Let us practice of writing our own eulogy.

It can be powerful and helpful for us to generate a clear vision of how we want one life to turn out.

Is there any more effective way to think with the end in mind than to consider what your legacy will be? In our day to day act we have to consider how our behavior and action will impact our legacy as friends, spouse, parent and citizen of humanity. It matters with every breath we take, with every thought we think, and every little ripple effect of our actions.

me every now and then – “What we do in life echoes through eternity.” Legacy should be consciously taken part in us. Take some time to write your own eulogy. Remember our legacy will help make our goals clear to us, make our daily stresses seem trivial. It gives us a sense of purpose in life and it helps create the ideals for ourselves. Everyone must leave something behind when one dies. Something your had touched in some way, so you soul has somewhere to go when you die and when people look at that tree or flower you have planted, you’re there or when they look at the sky they will remember you by.

tombstone.” A legacy is etched in the minds of other and the stories they share about you. I had an inheritance from my Papang, my father. It was his wise wisdom in life and love for nature. Your story is the greatest legacy that you will leave. It is the longest lasting legacy you will leave to your heirs. The history of how you love and struggle in life. If we are worth remembered, our life will overshadow our death. I think about my legacy all the time and that’s why I often think about my passing and actually to enjoy the quiet contemplation of my demise. Our passion becomes our legacy when we extend our love and services.

It was a cold winter night at Edmonton, but that did not deter the faithful fan of Darren Espanto to see his homecoming after his successful stint in the Philippines.

Darren, born & raised in Calgary, started his success here in Edmonton.

At 10 years old, his father (Lyndon) dragged this shy but talented boy to audition to “The Pinoy Singing Sensation”.

Le Tiger Production, operated by Tony Surtida, spearheaded this talent from their own talent search to YTV’s “The Next Star”. Leading to the next audition in the Philippines’ “The Voice Kids”. He was placed second to the nation’s

most watched talent searched. His career blossoms to guestings at ASAP and numerous ABS CBN programs.

It is just right for him to give his gratitude to the city that started it all. The event was regal, a banquet hall perfect for white n tie affair. A suiting theme for a suave talent like Dareen.

After the dinner, the program started with a few performers prior to the excitement of seeing him perform. Alas, after 4 years of development, that 10 year old shy boy has really leaped mountain high to the delight of his supporters.

The premier fanclub – The Darrenatics, drove all the way from Grande Prairie to be in this

event. The performance was highlighted by the duet of Dareen and his little sister – Lynelle.

A few songs from his Composer/Manager – Vehnee Saturno and his wife, completed the night.

The next day, the fan were treated with a meet and greet at Palabok House. An informal but intimate event for the devouts. The Darrenatics are present as expected.

After the sumptuous meal, the program move ahead with some questions & answers portions. Hosted

by Tony Surtida himself, Darren answered all the questions fans asked.

With him in the table were his Managers Vehnee Saturno & Sonny Maniago.

Some of the comments on the new caregiver program also mentioned the pathways for permanent residency that aims to take aggressive action to reduce the backlog of applications for permanent residence through the Live-in Caregiver Program.

“Under new rules, foreign caregivers and their own families all get permanent resident visas in about six months. And, caregivers are no longer required to live in the employer’s home. They have been given the freedom to choose where they want to live. More freedom, faster visas.‎ LCP is fixed,”said Erlinda Insigne, President, FilipinoCanadian Association of Vaughan, Ontario.

One pathway features criteria for child care providers that are very similar to current requirements, but without the need for the caregiver to live in the home of their employer where they may be vulnerable to abuse.

Starting November 30, 2014, a pathway for child care providers will be launched and applications will be processed within six months. The requirements for the pathway include: two years of full-time work experience in Canada as a home child care provider within the past four years; a minimum language requirement of “initial intermediate” by meeting Canadian Language Benchmark 5 in a designated thirdparty language test; and a Canadian post-secondary education credential of at least one year, or an equivalent foreign credential supported by an Educational Credential Assessment. The number of applications through this program each year will be capped at 2,750 principal applicants.

Spouses and dependants will not be counted against the cap.

In addition, caregivers in a variety of health care occupations, including registered nurses, registered psychiatric nurses, licensed practical nurses, nurse aides, orderlies, patient service associates and home support workers, will also have a pathway to permanent residence.

Eligible caregivers in this stream would be able to gain their work experience either in providing in-home care or care in a health-care facility to an elderly person or a person with a disability or chronic medical condition. This pathway offers more career options for eligible caregivers, and targets workers in occupations that are expected to face labour shortages in the future. Applications in this stream would also be processed within six months.

Also on November 30, 2014, a pathway will be launched for caregivers who provide support to those with high medical needs and applications will be processed within six months. This program will feature criteria that many current live-in caregivers already meet.

The requirements for the pathway include: (1) two years of full-time work experience in Canada providing in-home care or care in a health facility to the elderly or persons with disabilities or chronic disease as, for example, a registered nurse, a registered psychiatric nurse, a licensed practical nurse, a nurse aide, a patient service associate or a home support worker; demonstrating that they are licensed to practice in Canada, if applicable; (2) a minimum language requirement of “intermediate” by meeting Canadian Language Benchmark 7 in a designated third-party language test, if applying as a registered nurse or registered psychiatric nurse; a minimum language requirement of “initial intermediate” by meeting Canadian Language Benchmark 5 in a designated third-party language test, if applying in any other qualifying

The occupations chosen for this pathway were identified in consultation with ESDC and Health Canada as health-care occupations that are likely to experience labour shortages in the future.

Additional information about the pathways to permanent residence will be made available on CIC’s website prior to their launch on November 30, 2014. Additional information for employers about applying for a Labour Market Impact Assessment for caregivers after November 30th will be made available on ESDC’s website prior to the implementation of the changes.

As part of the 2015 Levels Plan tabled in the House of Commons, Canada will welcome 30,000 new permanent residents in this category.

Reducing the backlog and processing times will mean that eligible caregivers will be reunited sooner with their families.

Caregivers who have already applied for Livein Caregiver Program work permits, and any who apply based on an employer’s approved Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) submitted before November 30, will also be able to complete the work requirement on a live-in basis and eventually apply for permanent residence.

“We have listened to the concerns of caregivers across Canada and have taken action to improve Canada’s Caregiver Program. Our government’s changes protect caregivers from abuse and reduce family separation. With our improvements caregivers will be provided with more pathways towards permanent residence and will have the tools they need to achieve success in the Canadian labour market,” stated Citizenship and Immigration Minister Chris Alexander.

Significant Changes to Canada’s Live-In-Caregiver Program On October 31, 2014, Canadian government announced significant changes to the Live-In-Caregiver (LIC) program.

Changes to the program include ending the requirement to live-in the residence of the employer and providing two (2) different ways for caregivers to meet eligibility requirements to apply for Permanent Residency. The two (2) different streams for caregivers to permanent residency are: Stream No. 1 - Caring for Children Stream  Effective November 30, 2014, a pathway for child care providers will be launched and applications will be processed within six months.  The requirements for the pathway include: a. Two (2) years of full-time work experience in Canada as a home child care provider within the past four years; b. A minimum language requirement of “initial intermediate” by meeting Canadian Language Benchmark 5 (CLB 5) in a designated third-party language test; and c. A Canadian post-secondary education credential of at least one (1) year, or an equivalent foreign credential supported by an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA).

Since Canada has 12 years high school/secondary education, this means a person should have at least 13 years of full-time education.

NOTE: -The number of applications through this program each year will be capped at 2,750 principal applicants. Spouses and dependants will not be counted against the cap.

-The caregiver will no longer be required to live in the home of their employer.

Stream No. 2 - Caring for people with High Medical Needs Stream  Effective November 30, 2014, a pathway will be launched for caregivers who provide support to those with high medical needs and applications will be processed within six months.  This program will feature criteria that many current livein caregivers already meet. The requirements for the pathway are: a. Two (2) years of full-time work experience in Canada providing in-home care or care in a health facility to the elderly or persons with disabilities or chronic disease as, for example, a registered nurse, a registered psychiatric nurse, a licensed practical nurse, a nurse aide, a patient service associate or a home support worker; b. Demonstrating that they are licensed to practice in Canada, (if applicable); c. A minimum language requirement of “intermediate” by meeting Canadian Language Benchmark 7 (CLB 7) in a designated third-party language test, if applying as a registered nurse or registered psychiatric nurse; d. A minimum language requirement of “initial intermediate” by meeting Canadian Language Benchmark 5 (CLB 5) in a designated third-party language test, if applying in any other qualifying occupation; and e. A Canadian post-secondary education credential of at least one year, or an equivalent foreign credential supported by an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA).

According to the Canadian government, a total of 5,500 applications (only 2750 applications for each stream) for both per year will be accepted and they will be processed within six months. At the same time, the government is nearly doubling the number of caregivers and their families who will be granted permanent residency in 2015 to 30,000 from about 17,000 this year.

Listed below are some of the reasons why the Canadian government implemented the changes: 1. Requiring caregivers to live in the home of their employer can place them in vulnerable situations, including uncompensated overtime, poor working conditions, or worse, until they are able to achieve permanent residence status.

2. With the absence of Canadian live-in caregivers’ wages to compare to, the prevailing wage rate for live-in caregivers has generally been skewed. This situation distorts the labour market for Canadians working in this field and has kept the salaries paid to foreign caregivers artificially low.

3. The removal of the live-in requirement will result in greater opportunities for Canadians in caregiver occupations and an increase in wages for caregivers hired from abroad after employers clearly demonstrate that there are no Canadians available for the job.

4. Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) applications sent from employers to Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) after November 30, 2014, will only include a live-in arrangement if the employer and caregiver have agreed to that arrangement. In those cases, the LMIA will include an assessment of the living arrangements and employers will not be permitted to make room and board deductions from the wages of the caregiver.

status. When you receive your permanent resident status, your family members will receive immigrant visas from the visa office in their home country. If any member of your family (ie. spouse or children) is found inadmissible (eg. due to medical reasons, criminality, etc.)… you will also be found inadmissible.

Q4. Can I apply for Open Work Permit at the same time when I apply for permanent residency as a caregiver?

ANS. Yes, you can apply for an open work permit at the same time that you apply for permanent resident status. An open work permit allows you to take any job you wish without requiring an LMIA ( Labour Market Impact Assessment).

Q5. Can I leave Canada for a long vacation or go home permanently to my home country?

ANS. If you go away on a long vacation, you may need to reapply for a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) before returning to Canada. Check the expiry date of your Canadian Visa and find out if you have a single entry or multiple entry TRV. Before traveling, you should contact the CIC Call Centre for more information.

If you leave Canada for more than one year or if your work permit has expired, you will have to reapply to the overseas Visa Office to return to Canada under the Live-in Caregiver Program.

You can leave the LIC program and return permanently to your home country at any time. However, you should give adequate resignation notice to your employer.

Q6. What are the rules right now ( before Nov. 30, 2014) to be eligible to apply for PR as a caregiver?

ANS. There are less requirements to be eligible to apply as a PR under the current rules for the Live In Caregiver (LIC) program. A warranty is a contract between you and the company that built your car: most manufacturers generally provide 3 years or 80,000 kilometers for coverage under a warranty. It is advisable to read the warranty manual or owner’s manual made available by the warranty provider. It is also important to keep all records carefully that relate to your car servicing or warranty.

Like any contract, it is important to know what circumstances can void all or part of your warranty.

These could include;

1) Salvage title - if your car was in a severe accident and was given a salvage title or declared a total loss, your entire warranty is voided.

2) Misuse of the vehicle - including racing/competition of any type, overloading the vehicle or off-roading.

3) Environmental damage - if your vehicle was damaged in a fire, flood, earthquake or any other environmental disaster.

4) Altered odometer - if your vehicle’s odometer has been disconnected, tampered with or replaced, the dealer cannot determine the exact mileage.

5) Neglect - for example; going years without

It can be considered as early Christmas gift or thanksgiving in November, but thereare endless ways to appreciate people who made ‘The Main Ingredient’ such a remarkable year.

We can’t wait to see our creativity and original recipe creations be shared in the Canadian national television shortly soon as recent ‘McCormick Online Cook Off Winners’. This part maybe been read or heard, but allow to mention them again, Calgary contestants received all major prizes and awards including bragging rights with most top votes, grand prize winner, one of 2 judges’ pick and even one of the 5 random draws.... what a great ride that was for us here in this segment.

My heart is also loaded with gratefulness for what “The Main Ingredient” has achieved so far.

The conception of interactive and video cooking demonstrations has opened plenty of new and better ideas. It was followed by determination for greater heights and leap of faith towards excellence. It is such a great feeling that we have seen some fruits of our hard labour while meeting more friends along the way.

Because of these several achievements, it is just appropriate to thank everyone who are instrumental in the success of this column in print, social media and online.

The Calgary Academy of Chefs and Cooks board of directors, officers and members particularly the Filipino members shared not only patriotism and pride selflessly transferring skills and talent to all followers and viewers.The restaurants/businesses

and personal contributions toward sponsorship of ingredients for the chefs and cooks who were featured during the video cooking demonstrations ( Chefs: Gilmars Bacani, Tony Balintag, Jessie Dario, Joel Garcia, Arvie Obafial Ramil Paje and Executive Chef Jun Causapin). Forget Me Not independence — things our society values so much.

Life itself was dignity, they claimed, even if it meant becoming deteriorated, old, and dependent. One comment made an impact stating that, “Making this legal would provide too many people with the chance to end their lives far too soon, and far too easily.

That it would create false beliefs about life and death, and that the only value in life was to be young and beautiful. This is not dying with dignity it is more of dying with vanity.”

For this month we have also celebrated the one year anniversary of the tragedy brought by Typhoon Haiyan. Typhoon Haiyan, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Yolanda, was one of the strongest tropical cyclones ever recorded, which devastated portions of Southeast Asia, particularly the Philippines, on November 8, 2013. It is the deadliest Philippine typhoon on record, kill-

ing at least 6,300 people in that country alone. Haiyan is also the strongest storm recorded at landfall, and unofficially the strongest typhoon ever recorded in terms of wind speed. As of January 2014, bodies were still being found. It also brings to mind the concerted effort that was done to help the victims and the slow recovery of all areas affected.

Much in the world is unpredictable. Much of it is not. The past events illustrates many times over the struggle to forget the lessons that these events bring.

Letting go means to come to the realization that some people are part of your history, but not a part of your destiny. Remembrance Day ceremonies are important. But our gratitude has to be more than visits to war memorials, and once-a-year Remembrance Day ceremonies.

We honor the dead best by treating the living well. Let

us treat our veterans well.

Let us support our men and women in uniform by looking after the loved ones that they left behind. Let us take into account the bravery and sacrifices that these men has given by focusing on the needs of the loved ones they left behind. We can also help in the propagation of peace instead of war, love instead of hate. In this way, we can make the world a better way to live in.

With so much freedom, it seems that we’ll be remembered more for what we destroy than what we create just as the case of Maynard. The legacy of heroes is the memory of a great name and the inheritance of a great example.

Without such memory, there is no culture of life.

Without memory, there would be no civilization, no society, no future.

As for the case of tragedies and unforeseen events in our life resulting in losses of life and properties like that of the Typhoon Haiyan incident, let us remember the memories of heroism and love from ordinary people, from strangers from

other countries. Touched by what they have witnessed and heard, the concerted actions have given inspiration and the necessary push to help the victims overcome such tragedy. Let us remember that continued from page 06

we are strong in the midst of adversity. That we may come from a diverse group of people but the bottom line we belong in one world.

However painful… or difficult…let these lessons be remembered. A life that

is rich in such experiences is a life full of good memories. It is in difficulty that we overcome our shortcomings and learn to embrace life at its fullest.

“Hindi Nahahati ang Langit” joins roster of more than 60 films digitally restored to HD

ABS-CBN’S FILM RESTORATION CAMPAIGN: MORE THAN JUST PRESERVING CLASSIC FILIPINO FILMSALL When film restoration in the country is being talked about, the first thing that will come into mind is the restoration of classic Filipino films the likes of “Himala” and “Oro Plata Mata.” But for ABSCBN Film Archives, the country’s pioneer in locally restoring and remastering films, the preservation of Filipino films is not limited to old titles but also covers recent ones.

“Even more recent films have some defects that were not important enough to fix during its initial commercial run in theaters or were unnoticeable in a standard definition television broadcast.

However, today’s more sophisticated technologies require crisper images and more picture clarity so we need to address these defects as we convert the old SD films in to High-Definition,” said ABS-CBN head of Film Archives Leo Katigbak.

Since ABS-CBN Film Archives started restoring films in late 2011 in partnership with Central Digital Lab, it has already restored a total of 63 films that were produced from 1976 to 2011.

Among the recent titles restored were Star Cinema’s hit movies “Miss You Like Crazy,” “One More Chance,” “Milan,” “Tanging Yaman,” “Anak,” “Feng Shui,” and “My Amnesia Girl.”

Some of these restored films are available to the public via theatrical releases, DVDs, free-toair television via ABSCBN, cable television via Cinema One, and global television via TFC. Some are also available on iTunes, which is another first made possible by ABS-CBN Film Archives.

“Hindi Nahahati ang Langit” tells the story of Noel Delgado (De Leon) and Melody (Tolentino), step-siblings who grew up belligerent to each other. Melody appears to be trying hard to get attention while Noel remains indifferent.

When their parents died, Noel becomes the legal guardian of Melody who is annoyed with Noel’s strict and old fashioned ways.

The two should have parted ways when each got married but still their lives intertwine when Melody gets into the construction business as Noel’s business partner, stirring jealousy and suspicion in their respective spouses.

The digitally restored and remastered version of “Hindi Nahahati ang Langit” will be screened in select cinemas later this month.

With the whole Church, we celebrate this month the Commemoration of all the Faithful Departed. We celebrate the love we have shared with our beloved dead, who have gone before us marked with the sign of faith. We pause and reflect on our certain faith in the mystery of the Communion of Saints, that is, our interrelationship as the pilgrim church with those suffering in purgatory and those triumphant in heaven. We pause to offer our special prayers and sacrifices for the repose of the souls of our loved ones.

When death comes so close to us, as in a family, we can feel more the emptiness and devastation that come with bereavement. Yet in our loss and bereavement, we discover God’s presence in the sympathy and love our friends and family offer us in our time of need. We learn to appreciate more the real value of the gifts of faith, family and friendship. We discover the value of sympathy and solidarity that make us go through our difficulties and challenges in life with more faith, more hope and more love.

A milestone worth sharing

Months ago I picked up my newly leased car from a dealer at the north east part of the city. To break it in I headed north and turned right to Stoney Trail (Ring Road).

The highway was ideal to test this little beast’s running capability. Minutes into my 110 km/hr run, from nowhere was a car cut me off from the left lane.

Brroooooooooooommm.....

I was annoyed by this unexpected incident.

I adjusted my sitting position, looked at the rear mirror, turned off cruise control, and said “get ready “Pugtit” (my car’s name) for the race of your life!”

Brrrrrrrrrrroommm... was Pugtit’s reaction when I floored the gas pedal. Then it occurred to me a speeding ticket at 135 km/hr was not a good idea. My distance from the other car got even bigger. I gritted my teeth.

Minutes after turning off

at 17th Ave S.E., I reached the stop light at 68 Street.

In front of me I saw the car again. I changed lane and stopped parallel to him. Seconds before the lights turned green he prepped his gas and his engine roared with power.

Not to be outsmarted I also floored my gas pedal.

Brroooooooooommm said the car to my right and I was left behind. Pugtit tried to catch up with him, Brrrrrrrrrrrrrroommm, but to no avail. The corvette in front of me was steady and roaring confidently. My 1.8 litre engine (of covet) was gasping for air and mercy. Seconds later the car in front of me was gone.

When I reached home I realized that life and driving is full of funny and insightful incidents. Like Pugtit, no way it could match up with a corvette. Like cars on the street, people were not born to function identically.

November 1st when we arrived at the Telus Convention Centre to witness the 2014 Convocation of newly Certified General Accountants (CGA) of Alberta.

The program listed 386 new CGAs. I scanned the list and came up with my best estimate: More than 50 percent was non Caucasian; within this group (non Caucasian), no less than 40 percent was of Asian ethnicity, and if my count was right there were around 10 new Pinoy CGAs. The thing that elated and inspired us was the loud cheering of our fellow pinoys from the audience.

The songs were evocative and nostalgic. It was delightful and refreshing to watch the performers in their colorful gowns and attire. The songs, dances, theatrics and humor were perfectly knitted together to convey the very common occurrences in the lives of people working and living

abroad.

KB’s goodwill performance, “Ang Mahal Kong Bayan,” is just half of the story. Their visit was also to raise funds for ANKOP projects in the Philippines. The generosity of Filipinos and Canadians is a great step forward in sustaining KB’s noble purpose..

PARTICIPATES IN UNITED WAY FUNDRAISER SKATE

The U. of Calgary invited Olympic Skater Gilmore Junio on Oct.31 at the Oval to participate in the Halloween Mass Skate United Way Fundraiser.

Admission was $10 which following the Oval skate Pizza and Halloween Candies and being a Professional Day off for School Kids a number of Parents, Children and anyone wanting to donate to the fundraiser enjoyed skating with

Gilmore, Mascot Dino and JP Penguin. Around 200 participated and some members of the Kinesiology Dept. where Gilmore is a Kinesiology Student.

Many youngsters enjoyed skating alongside Gilmore in their Halloween Costume and some claim to have beaten him in the make believe 500 lap run.

The Oval run started at 12.30pm-1pm and following Pizza in the lounge.
