Out of seven nominees for the Search and Tribute of the TFW of the Year 2015, Marjory Rafanan Three-Sun of Strathmore, Alberta grabbed the title of being the first Modern Jose Rizal Awardee and a cheque of $1,000. She was chosen after a triple tie qualifier in the final round of question and answer last February 21 at Southside Victory Centre 6402 1A St. SW Calgary, Alberta.

Not because it is tax season, nor because it is closer to the deadline April 1 on regards to the 4-on-4 rule affecting thousands of temporary foreign workers. This month is a break or make month because this is the time when we face up to the reality on what the 2015 will really look like for us here in Alberta. On March 26, Budget 2015 will be made public along with the many changes it entails.

Budget 2015, according to the government, will protect vulnerable and working families while controlling our spending.

The government will lay out a long-term 10-year plan for transitioning our finances away from the rollercoaster of energy prices.

Alberta Premier Jim Prentice has repeatedly signalled that new taxes and spending cuts contained in the “tough” 2015 budget will mean the PC government will need a new mandate from

Albertans. Put simply, the release of the budget may pave way to an early provincial election.

A provincial law states the next provincial election must be held in early 2016 but some wiggle room still allows Lieutenant General Donald Ethell to dissolve the legislature upon the premier’s request. “Once the premier puts it in play, then I’ll get involved and I’m not about to speculate which way he’ll go or how he’s going to do it because that’s not my place. I think that he’s a pretty smart guy and he’s got this all figured out,” said Ethell. “Push comes to shove, I’m the one who’s got to sign off on the Order in Council and I would think that it would be represented by the premier as having the confidence of the house.

If he has the confidence of the House, then I really don’t have any argument with that.”

Political analysts expect the writ to drop shortly after the March 26 budget, paving the way for a vote in late April or early May.

But the way I see it, many Albertans just want the government to get on with business so if that means dissolving and going for an election then so be it. Why do I agree on that mentality? Because it brings optimism to a bleak forecast of our fiscal year.

Alberta faces major fiscal challenges with the collapse in oil prices.

Oil prices have fallen by more than 50% since June 2014, touching below $50 per barrel recently. Due to the severe drop-off in energy-related revenues, the province is facing an annual revenue shortfall of up to $7 billion. That’s about 15% of total provincial revenue. It means that in 2015, the economy is expected to grow much more slowly, at a rate of less than 2%.

If the upcoming budget will be so radical then Albertans will surely demand a vote to validate or reject it. The foreseen early election then can be considered a good thing since it will give the people a voice against taxes

and cuts that will serve as key wedge issues on the election.

Optimism in a difficult year for me means moving forward adjusting to the measures that will work best in this situation. Having an election or not, Albertans want a government they can trust to operate a fair and ethical functioning democracy. With this, let’s use our votes wisely.

Abraham Lincoln said, “Elections belong to the people. It’s their decision.

If they decide to turn their back on the fire and burn their behind, then they will just have to sit on their blisters.”

Let’s take this election as an opportunity. The job facing Albertan voters… in the days and months to come is to determine which hearts, minds and souls command those qualities best suited to unify our province rather than further divide it, to heal the wounds of past mistakes as opposed to aggravate its injuries, and to secure for the next generation a legacy of choices based on informed awareness rather than one of reactions based on unknowing fear of what 2015 will bring. 2015 is not a difficult year- it’s a challenging but exciting year!

Social Media in a Hybrid World

There are things in the social media that cannot be extended to real life.

One’s identity in the social media can never be totally equivalent to one’s real–life identity.

There were times when I wondered why the “likes” on my profile photos do not exceed the number of friends who know me.

Shallow it may sound like but it made me wonder and began to lose confidence in myself. But then I realized that not everything is all about the “likes” and comments of people in this social networking site, others may have found popularity in this virtual world, but not at all times should people

dwell on these social status in that site.

The social media world seems to be conquering the real world creating the current hybrid reality to which most of us are highly exposed.

In this hybrid reality, we tend to create the illusion that we can extend our social media world to our real life. This makes us immoral by creating this identity in this hybridity because little by little we mix things up. In this hybrid world where almost everything can be instant, people tend to extend the speed to their own lives and relationships.

Apart from FB, twitter, Instagram to other

social networking sites, there are also numerous dating sites that allow people especially those who are too busy to date, to fish out prospective partners. These sites can serve as venues for getting to know one another through constant chats and interaction in the forms of tweets, posts and photos. One can find instant friend and relationships, partners through the internet and of course, one can also end friendship or relationships instantly using this sites.

The internet specifically the networking sites has become the world of some people seeking relationship instead of just an instrument venue for building rapport it has become as powerful that many consider basing their reality on it. It is the gauge personhood, it is where they can make or break their relationship. I have learned that unfriending means rooting out someone from one’s virtual world. It is a way of cutting ties with another person, especially when you do not desire to see the person’s posts in your newsfeed. It is also a way for couples to break up as

what happens rampantly nowadays one merely changes the status in FB from “in a relationship” to “single”.

In my case I wanted to stop seeing my friend’s posts as this sense of estrangement has seemingly conquered our friendship.

I wanted to unfriend her as though I was living in this hybrid reality. Sadly I almost dared to end a relationship through the social media site. I almost forgot that what was started in real life should not be ended in a venue that is apart from reality. This person became my friend when we met in College and not through FB or Friendster. She was my close friend with whom I shared much of my life secrets and if our level of maturity does not allow us to maintain our friendship and if the allowances for mistakes is no longer there- if ever we are to end our friendship… I realized that we can do it in the world where we started and not through FB.

I have nothing against social networking sites I myself use these sites and find these useful in life.

I have used the sites to

contact people and bug them with my questions.

These have served as bridge to friends whom I have not seen or heard for quite some time. I have been able to “communicare” urgent concerns to my friends because all of them are active in these sites. These are just a few of its benefits that one can get from being part of this social media world.

But if we post too much of ourselves on these networking sites, if we brag about our achievements too much, if we share almost everything that we do every day, and if we flood our walls with complaints about every little thing- then we make our accounts nonsensical, self-centered and our world narrows down to our selfies, our whining, our “parinig”. Indeed practically everything about ourselves and of course everything that is done excessively is not good at all.

Your world is narrowed down to what only you can see. Everyone can be tempted by this unconscious submergence in our virtual world, which we combine with our reality.

Why do we have to dwell in this lonely illusory

place when we can live in real life? Where liking is warmer than a simple click, we can have hugs and affirmation more than what we can deliver or receive on Facebook. I think we will be happier if we make this virtual album of our memories channels and instruments in nurturing relationships, and not the world itself.

I have realized then that I do not want to unfriend my close friend anymore.

I might have wanted to unfriend my friend before but I know I would still want her as my friend when the storm has passed. The best that I can do is to stay away from the tempting offer of the internet for me to unburden myself of private troubles in public. So from unfriending I am still hoping now that I can re- friend her, if such a button can exist to real life.

Let us avoid for sometime living in such a kind of a hybrid world. Let us go back to the foundation of using personal communication in the real form and face to face contact or connection. Using social media has its own limitations. Never, never be controlled by it.

CELEBRATES 25TH YEAR SILVER ANNIVERSARY OF ITS GALA FUNDRAISING

The Philippine Festival Council of Alberta that initially organized the Fiesta Filipino 2015 on September 5 from 9 am until 10 pm at Canada Olympic Plaza invited exhibitors, vendors, artists, performers and volunteers to participate in this first ever Philippine festival.

“I believe this festival will be a good way to bring Filipino people together without focusing on one region or religion of the Philippines, “ says Robert Sison, the head of the Fiesta Filipino vendor committee. “We want to encompass the whole community and help people share and appreciate their Filipino heritage.”

The festival is expected to feature traditional Filipino dances and music from various regions in the Philippines. Local Filipinos will also perform

DF dance and music from other genres. Visitors of the festival will be able to sample Filipino food and drinks prepared by local businesses and individual vendors. Filipino crafts and merchandise will be sold from Filipino owned local business owners.

Fiesta Filipino 2015 organizers hope to bring together these elements of Filipino culture and bring awareness to the fact that Filipino culture is very diverse and multi-faceted. The Philippines as the third largest visible minority in Alberta has

yet to hold a large-scale festival like that of the Chinatown Street Festival or Expo Latino. Filipino has took part in various festivals and city wide events such as Global fest and Stampede but the organizers still saw the need for more awareness and appreciation of the Filipino contribution to the society.

Kindly mark September 19, 2015 from 6PM to 1AM at the Polish Canadian Cultural Centre in the NE as a special red – letter day. A significant milestone in helping seminarian scholars and orphanages including streetchildren in the various provinces of the Philippines unfolds with simplicity and solemnity. The core value of inclusivity is further enhanced by welcoming with open minds and hearts all believers into the flock of Jesus Christ.

Recognition without differentiation of the faith community is upheld and practised. The Society prides itself in a continued and sustained manner in supporting the religious community through scholarships, orphanage subsidies, donations to designated charities under the Bishop’s dinner event, financial contribution to the completion of a retirement home for the clergy of Calgary and occasional emergency social concerns of fellow countrymen here just like the Temporary Contract Workers’ plight.

To date, the Society has graduated 40 priests now serving in the Lord’s

vineyard back home.

Five orphanages with their numerous wards benefit from the monetary help keeping them afloat in their charitable services. The Society has served as a focal point in fundraising for Philippine calamities as a charitable institution in monitoring income tax receipts.

The history of the Society goes a long way back 28 years ago and has impeccably survived with dignity and integrity. In short, monetary trust is maintained, assessed, and secured through the years. Generous donors and benefactors continue to commit money and time in evangelizing the continued on page 5

The event was attended and graced by Hon. Tobias Enverga Jr, the first Filipino-Canadian Senator and Tatay Tom Avendano, the

legendary founder of Multicultural Helping House Society of Vancouver.

No less than 100 people celebrated and honoured Temporary Foreign Workers in Southern Alberta.

Just like any other gathering, the event served as a melting pot for engaging, insightful and hardworking Filipino-Canadians, immigrants and TFWs. As I walked around and mingled with the crowd, people were fully engaged – both negatively and positively. Some complained audibly about the program running too long, wasted time, their hunger, and other lapses.

The women behind me blabbered about the models serving food to VIPs. One elder, on the other hand commented on the value and importance of service to others irrespective of social status. She saw humility in action.

A group of attendees positively complimented the quality of food, along with the arrangement and decor of the hall. Also, the beauty of the models truly showcased the good looks of all Filipinos!

The event was insightful. One person said, “The venue could have been full if other organizations were engaged during the planning of the event.”

One attendee remarked about separating government from social events like this one, possibly alluding to the present dignitaries and mention of the current unfortunate plight of a number of TFWs. However, Tatay Tom’s piece left us all with great encouragement as “We should eat all our crabs so we won’t be pulling down each others.” Even Senator Enverga mentioned the importance of Filipino’s increasing population in Canada, “we need to support each other to come up with a strong collective influence.”

No amount of hard work is free from negative people in terms of their engagement and insight on any event. Their opinions may be valid but not productive. However, positive people were cognizant of the importance of the ceremonies regardless of the way it was played out.

Why? Because they knew exactly that this event was neither for the guests nor volunteers. Guests and visitors were invited not for entertainment, convenience and pampering, although some of these were notable by-products.

Rather, the focus of the occasion was to make our TFWs feel good, valued

and properly complimented through our collective encouragement and support.

TFWs are engaging, insightful and hardworking people – Thoughtful (concern for others), Fair (unbiased opinion) and Wise (wisdom to live at peace with fellowman).

What can be more perfect combination to bring excellence in service to others than Canadian’s strong sense of national volunteerism and Filipino’s bayanihan spirit.

For this issue of the Main Ingredient and Footprints and Speck, we are very proud to feature a topic of great value and essence.

Volunteerism. Why Volunteer? Because it is important not only to individual volunteers but to society as a whole.

According to the 2011 United Nations State of the World’s Volunteerism Report, “...volunteerism benefits both society at large and the individual volunteer by strengthening trust, solidarity and reciprocity among citizens, and by purposefully creating opportunities for participation.”

Among Filipinos, “Bayanihan” (Thessaurus) is synonymous to volunteerism. Bayanihan literally means, “being a bayan,” referring to a nation, town or community.

The whole term bayanihan refers to a spirit of

communal unity or effort to achieve a particular objective.

Statistics Canada, 2010 showed that Canadians continue to rise to the challenge. The contribution of volunteers in making the world a better place is equivalent to Over 13.3 million people or 47% of Canadians. This means almost 2.07 billion hours have been devoted to volunteer activities or a volume of work that is equivalent to just under 1.1 million full-time job.

We all understand there are several ways motivations that drive a person to volunteer. It can be to contribute to their communities, to use skills and experience or because they have been personally affected by the cause. It can also be done to explore one’s own strengths or because their friends volunteer .

Others do it to network, improve job opportunities and last but not the least, is to fulfill religious obligations or beliefs. Whatever the reasons are, we are just more than grateful in having all our supporters and volunteers dedicated their time, talents and treasure to have joined us and made The First Ever

Ever TFW of the Year, an overwhelming success!!!

What they have done to support our advocacies and the community as whole is priceless, in behalf of everyone who benefited from it, we want to expresses our gratefulness and gratitude. To each of you Thank you!!!

08 March 2015 - 7PM , on stage is the multi platinum and multi gold record singer, songwriter, composer, lyricist and writer for musical theatre- David Pomeranz.

Although David’s singing career started in the early 70s, his nostalgic songs are still being treasured in the hearts and mind of his Filipino audience.

The concert opened couple of Tagalog songs by the bubbly Leah Gutlay who surprised the audience with her fluent Tagalog accent. Also performed as front act and duet is the upcoming performer Annie Lux of Calgary.

started serenading the crowd with his hits “Got to Believe in Magic” which made the audience all felt 16 years old . He also engaged his audience and made sure they will relived the high school prom with his song “King and Queen of Hearts”.

Pomeranz sang his other famous singles such as Old Songs and Trying to Get the Feeling Again, in which the crowd enjoyed singing along.

Pomeranz delighted and inspired millions all over the world. He also mentioned that Filipinos are among the closest to his heart. The song “If You Walked Away” was re-released as a duet

between Pomeranz and Sharon Cuneta. Aside from that he also sang “Tell Me”, an original rendition of Joey Albert , and according to him it out of admiration to the wit of its composer Louie Ocampo.

One that didn’t get away and touched a lot of emotions is one of the most favourite wedding songs “On This Day”. He encouraged those celebrating their anniversaries to join him and dance at the front stage.

The concert hall was more than 80 percent full with about 70 percent of the crowd young adults. In all accounts, Acoustic Night with the Soloistas Canada Tour was a night to remember.

Produced by MJR Productions, the concert on Feb 28 at the Century Casino in Southeast Calgary brought hours of nostalgia and tons of Pakulo, Pakuwela at Pag-awit (humour,

comedy and singing).

The fun and energy generated that night was extraordinary. The bonding created thru their Sabado Boys Band, accounts to the harmonious, relaxed but fun and friendly antics among Luke Mejares, Paolo Santos, DJ Myke and Jimmy Bondoc. Hits like “Let Me Be the One”

their song-set that night while Myke Salomon aka DJ Myke beatbox and theatrical antics became a hit that night much to the delight of the audience.

The night proved once again that Pinoys will never run out of theatrical and stage talents. The amazing voices of singers, choreography and stage presence were at par with other mega entertainers.

The concert was a warm time well spent in the middle of winter.

My name is Mary Kate Aquino also known as Calgary’s Song Princess. I started singing at the age of 3 at church choirs. The moment I found out I had a skill that was really amazing I started to take my talents and show everyone what I had, At the age of 7, I started joining competitions. I became one of the Young Canadians and when I was a 11 year old girl, I got the opportunity to sing the national anthem every night for ten days at the Calgary Stampede Greatest outdoor show on earth.

Through many competitions, I met many mentors, producers, managers etc. and even famous celebrities. In 2009 I created a demo album consisting of five songs. I am now 15 turning 16 in May and currently studying in Bishop O’ Byrne High School. I’m proud to say I released my FIRST single TROUBLE in January 2015! Very excited to tell you all about the music video for TROUBLE that came out March 8th! Make sure you head to YouTube if you haven’t checked that out! Also I’ll be releasing my very first EP (Extended Play) Album coming out this spring!

What are your goals as a daughter, as a student, as a singer and as a Filipino youth?

As a daughter, my goal would be to make my family and parents proud

because they are and still have been my number one supporters since the very beginning. Not only them but God as well because I am also a child of God. As a student I would like to graduate high school and move forward on to post secondary schooling studying Law and Music.

I am also aiming to keep and maintain my high average grades and to find who I truly am as a person.

As for being a singer, my goal would be to travel the world and tour to as many countries as much as I can.

Also to improve and create and work on new vocal techniques that will help me become a better artist in general. Not only do I want to become a singer but a versatile performer, either being a dancer, singer or actress! I believe the youth is the power of the next coming years.

Since I am Filipino and part of the youth, being a leader and someone people can look up to is a goal I want to achieve. I don’t want to encourage and be a mentor to just people my age and younger but to the older generations as well! I would also like to be more involved in youth and community volunteer activities.

As mentioned before, I released my very FIRST Single TROUBLE, at the very beginning of the year.

I was very honored and excited to be the face of DFs March issue! Knowing that I have never been the face makes this a special moment for me! This is another blessing from up above and I am very grateful this has happened to me. Hopefully this is one of the many project DF and I will be working on! Any message or advice to our Diaryo Filipino readers?

I never liked the saying “Keep dreaming” because if you keep dreaming nothing will happen. But if you get up, become motivated and make an effort something great will come out of it.

Become inspired by everything you see, ignore those who try to pull you down.

If you know you’re worth it, then you are! Surround yourself with positive attitudes and positive people. These people will give you the best outcome.

Don’t take the easy way out although you are getting there faster, the outcome will come out the opposite of what you wanted. A negative mind and heart is a disease. Keep your head up, be yourself. Everyone will trust and love you more when you are being who you are. YOU are your best supporter- keep that in mind. God is always with you and remember anything and everything will happen, all you got to do is get up and start moving!

You may have noticed that processing times at CPC Vegreville is very slow and it may now take up to 17 months to the initial assessment. This is the stage where you can apply for an open work permit.

WHAT IS NEW UNDER THE AINP –Workers who have already applied and is waiting for a provincial nominee certificate can obtain a year extension on their work permits even if they have already worked in Canada for 4 years.

• Just for your information: Alberta’s Nominee Program does not have an express entry stream.

Under the new policy, Alberta temporary foreign workers who are affected by the federally imposed April 1 deadline — the date on which any TFW who arrived in 2011 or earlier will see their contract expire — will be eligible for a one-time, one-year bridging work permit, as long as they’ve already applied to the AINP and are in the queue waiting for a decision.

Filipino newcomers to Canada diagnosed with breast cancer at a younger age and with more aggressive cancer, study finds TORONTO, Feb. 24, 2015 --Filipinos who move to Canada are diagnosed with breast cancer at a younger age than women from other parts of East Asia or Caucasians, new research has found.

They are also more likely to be diagnosed with a more aggressive form of cancer and are more likely to undergo a mastectomy, according to a paper published online in the Journal of Immigrant and Minority Health.

“The Canadian Filipino community is a growing community and this new research raises the question of whether our current Canadian guidelines calling for mammograms starting at age 50 are meeting specific cultural needs of different ethnicities when it is known that it takes years for a breast cancer to develop,” said Dr. Jory Simpson, a surgical oncologist in the CIBC Breast Centre of St. Michael’s Hospital.

“As Canada continues to ethnically diversify this

new research only highlights and magnifies the need to take on a more personalized approach to preventing and treating breast cancer.”

Dr. Simpson said it’s known that women of different ethnic origins have different risks of developing breast cancer.

When a women emigrates from an area of low incidence of breast cancer to an area of high incidence, her risk increases, possibly due to new environmental influences such as diet interacting with preexisting genetics.

Dr. Simpson said he believes his study – albeit a small sample at one hospital – is the first to look at the incidence of breast cancer in Filipino immigrants to Canada.

According to Statistics Canada, Filipinos are the third largest non-European ethnic group in the country. Of the 328,000 people of Filipino origin who live in Canada, many are young women.

Of the 782 patients he

studied at St. Michael’s, which has a sizeable Filipino patient population, Filipino newcomers to Canada were diagnosed with breast cancer at a younger age (53) compared to other East Asians (55) and Caucasians (58).

They were also found to be diagnosed with a form of more aggressive cancer and have a higher likelihood of undergoing a mastectomy. Thirty-seven per cent had a Grade 3 tumour on a scale of 1-3, compared to less than 30 per cent for other Asians and Caucasians. In addition, 22.6 per cent tested positive for the protein HER2, or human epidermal growth factor receptor 2, which promotes the growth of cancer cells.

Dr. Simpson said that was “disproportionately high” compared to East Asians (14.4 per cent) and Caucasians (15.1 per cent).

Filipino women with tumours the same size as their East Asian and Caucasian counterparts underwent more mastecto-

mies in this study, 35 per cent, compared with 22.5 per cent for Caucasian woman and 28.3 per cent for East Asian women.

VANCOUVER 16 February 2015 - Consul General Neil Frank R. Ferrer of the Philippines has officially assumed the Chairmanship of the ASEAN Consuls General in Vancouver (ACGV) Committee for 2015. The Philippines succeeded Malaysia which chaired for 2014.

On Thursday, February 12, 2015, Consul General Ferrer chaired the first monthly meeting of the ACGV held at the Philippine Consulate General.

In attendance were the Consuls General plus one officer from the Consulates of Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Thailand.

The Meeting agreed on the various activities and projects of the ACGV lined up for 2015 among them, the traditional events like ASEAN Golf Tournament (AGT) and ASEAN Picnic.

These two events have over the years helped to bringcloser the ASEAN community in Vancouver and raised awareness of

ASEAN among the Canadian mainstream. They have also successfully raised funds to support local charities and provide assistance to victims of natural disasters in Southeast Asia.

Also on the agenda were new initiatives to increase ASEAN awareness in Canada and promote economic cooperation, particularly in view of establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community in 2015. (Associated Press)

Starting February 1, 2015 new fees will be collected for passports, travel documents, visas and other consular services of the Philippine Consulate General in Vancouver, as well as at its full-service consular outreach missions.

The new fees will be also collected by the Philippine Consular Office in Edmonton, Alberta, for visas and notarial services. The new schedule of fees for all services is indicated

below. The adjustment in fees is the first since September 2007, and the first increase in passport fees since the Philippine machine-readable passport, and subsequently the biometric e-passport, were introduced in Canada.

The adjustments were made due to foreign exchange fluctuations and were determined based on a study by the Department of Foreign Affairs in the Philippines. The adjustments are necessary to enable the Philippine For-

eign Service in Canada to continue to provide quality and timely services to its clientele and extend its reach to underserved regions.

Increasing the passport fee will also help to ensure convenient travel for Filipinos through one of the most advanced passport systems available, which fully complies with international standards established for passport issuance.

The Filipino Canadian Saskatoon Sports Association (FICASSA) hold a fundraiser game for PBA Legend Samboy Lim last February 28 at Tommy Douglas High School 130 Bowlt Crescent, Saskatoon Saskachewan. Participated by 8 teams, the fundraiser game managed to reach a total of $1,985.00 that was sent to the Philippines to augment some of Lim’s medical expenses.

Avelino Borromeo Lim better known as Samboy “the Skywalker” Lim is a retired professional basketball shooting guard player of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA). He distinguished himself with his above the rim play and often dan-

gerous foray to the basket punctuated by acrobatic shots, hang time and slam dunk.

In the evening of November 28, 2014; he was rushed to the hospital unconscious after collapsing just minutes after coming out of a PBA Legends Exhibition game at Yanares Center in Pasig City. He has since slipped into a coma and was first admitted to the ICU of the Medical City. On January 14, 2015, he slipped out of his comatose state and was brought home where he will continue to receive treatment and therapy.

The 8 teams who heed the call for help of FICASSA on this fundraiser were Team Chris Rowd Dagz, Team Cabalen, and Team McDonald from Saskatoon; and out of town teams like Team Winnipeg, Team Lloyminster, Team Meadow Lake, Team

Edmonton stroke patients getting clotbusting drug sooner EDMONTON — Many local stroke patients are receiving a clot-busting drug faster than ever, significantly improving their chances for a full recovery according to Alberta Health Services in their recent press release last March 9.

Median door-to-needle (DTN) time – the total time from when a patient enters the emergency room, is given a stroke diagnosis and receives a clot-busting drug – has been reduced to 40 minutes from 79 minutes three years ago at the University of Alberta Hospital, one of two main stroke centres in the city.

The improvements are the result of a quality improvement project initiated at the Alberta Health Services facility in March 2012. About 1,200 stroke patients are treated at the hospital every year.

First, we need to evaluate the physical needs of seniors. They need to exercise so that they can function fully. Seniors can have home exercise, walking, standing, bending, and lifting. Since, March is Epilepsy Awareness let’s be aware that seizures come at any time.

Bear in mind to remove everything from the areas that may cause injury like sharp objects. Also, visiting a community and engaging in activities, participating, and exchanging ideas create a better life for seniors. Programs for seniors should support the diversity though a variety of activities given depending on their age, life style and needs.

Second, seniors need to ask the pharmacist the name of the medication so that they can be safe on the medication that they are taking. The pharmacist can help the seniors to understand when and how to take the medication. Seniors needs to overcome their fear of falling, accept support invites friends over and have the confidence in one’s self.

To overcome fear of falling, wear proper footwear and exercise regularly.

20 different processes that need to be executed from the time a patient arrives in the emergency department to the time the clot-busting drug is administered,” says Dr. Thomas Jeerakathil, a neurology physician at the University of Alberta Hospital. “A delay of just one minute in each of these steps could result in a massive loss of brain cells.” On average, a stroke patient loses 1.9 million brain cells every minute that passes until the clot is cleared and regular blood flow can return to the brain. Typically, the clot is cleared using a drug called tPA (tissue plasminogen activator).

Canadian Best Practice Recommendations for Stroke indicates DTN time should be 60 minutes or less. Edmonton’s other major stroke centre, the Grey Nuns Community Hospital, also has a medi-

A stroke can result in paralysis, loss of muscle control, pain, difficulty with language and speaking, and trouble with memory and thinking.

Administering tPA within 60 minutes of a stroke has been shown to reduce mortality, reduce complications of the treatment, lessen disabilities and shorten inpatient hospital stays.

Protocol improvements included the emergency department immediately paging all members of the stroke team and diagnostic imaging when the patient is triaged, ensuring the CT scanner is available for quick use, and creating visual cues for the lab to indicate the urgency of the patient’s blood tests.

The departments continue to meet, troubleshoot problem areas, and look for areas of improvement.

“If you don’t measure, you can’t make change,” says Dr. Jeerakathil. “Everyone is an expert in their own process, so it was essential to present the teams with the numbers and engage them to think about what we could all do better. We determined if anything could be eliminated or simplified, and which processes could run in parallel, rather than in

sequence.”

The University of Alberta Hospital’s protocol improvements and ideas are being shared with the other stroke centres across Alberta. Not all stroke patients are candidates for tPA. Patients who have a high risk of hemorrhage, and those who arrived in an emergency department too long after the initial stroke, may not be candi-

dates for tPA. “The DTN improvement initiative is one of the best examples we have of multidisciplinary teams working together to make a difference in the care patients receive, and subsequently their recovery and quality of life,” says Shy Amlani, Edmonton Zone Stroke Program manager. Seniors Information & Safety Third, seniors need protection of their identity, dignity and self-esteem.

Respect and fair treatment is important in this matter. Seniors should protect their social insurance and never use it as your identification. It’s also advisable to not answer the phone if you don’t know the caller.

Often times seniors were also bullied often times repetitively. Due to this, seniors lost their self-esteem and have feelings of rejection. They sometimes cannot sleep, often time’s seniors have depression.

Sometimes they think of suicide as the answer for depression due to bullying. We can help seniors on this issue by contacting the local police.

For each need, a program or a service were created.

Here are some Provincial Programs and Services Seniors 2014-2015.

1. Alberta Seniors Benefit - The Alberta Seniors Benefit (ASB) program is based on income and provides monthly benefits to eligible seniors. ASB provides financial assistance which supplements federal programs, including Old Age Security and the Guaranteed Income Supplement.

2. Special Needs Assistance for Seniors - Provides financial assistance to eligible low-in-

come seniors to assist with extraordinary costs such as appliances, essential home repairs and some medical expenses.

In general, single seniors with an annual income of $26,200 or less, and senior’s couples with a combined annual income of $45,500 or less, may qualify for the Alberta Seniors Benefit and Special needs assistance program.

3. Dental Assistance for Seniors - Provides up $5,000 of basic dental coverage every five years.

4. Optical Assistance for Seniors - Provides up to $230 for prescription eyeglasses every three years.

5. Elder Abuse - A series of community- based agencies are resources are available to help individuals who suspect that elder abuse may be occurring. Call the Alberta Supports Contact Centre or visit health. alberta.ca. You may also call the Family Violence info line at 310-1818 6. Alberta Blue Cross Coverage for Seniors - Provides premium-free Blue Cross coverage for seniors and their eligible dependents for specific health-related benefits.

Coverage includes prescription drugs listed on the Alberta Drug Benefit List, supplies for insulin

dependent diabetics, ambulance services, clinical psychological services, home nursing care and chiropractic services. Seniors may be responsible for a portion of the cost of these health benefits. Seventy percent of prescription drug costs are covered, and seniors pay a maximum of 25$ per prescription or refill.

7. Seniors SelfContained Housing Program - Local housing management bodies provide affordable apartments for low-income seniors who cannot afford private-sector housing. Call 780-4220122 for more information.

In addition, here are the Federal Programs and Services.

1. Canada Pension Plan - Paid monthly to those who have contributed to the Canada Pension Plan. Payments may begin as early as the age 60.

Survivor benefits are also available through this program.

2. Old Age Security - Paid monthly to seniors who are 65 and over, and who have lived in Canada for a minimum of 10 years.

3. Guaranteed Income Supplement - Paid monthly to seniors who receive Old Age Security and have little or no other income. The guaranteed income supplement is added to the old age security payment.

4. The Allowance/ Allowance for the Survivor - Paid monthly to low-income Canadians aged 60-64, whose spouse or common-law partner receives the guaranteed income supplement or has passed away.

Galveston Island was well known as “Playground of the South” in the early 1800s mainly because of its numerous amenities and beach culture. High traffic ports became a magnet for entrepreneurs and hoteliers. Then came the one of the most devastating hurricane in the early 1900s hammered most of the island and brought upon severe economic impact and around 6,000 to 8,000 lives believed to have been lost making it the deadliest tropical storm in US history.

During this time, Houston’s economic boom throughout 20th century became very attractive to many Galvestonians. The island became less of a place to prosper for many career minded locals and continued decrease in population left the island in almost an abandoned state.

Today, Galveston Island has become a beach and vacation destination, not only it is easily accessible that links the mainland via causeway, many attractions have been built along Seawall Boulevard.

The Historic Pleasure Pier is a major pull for visitor where amusement rides, games, restaurants and live entertainment can fill your day.

Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. located at the forefront of the pier offers perhaps the top 5 seafood restaurants I have been to and the most fun dining experience I have had. The ambiance fills the walls and tables with memorabilia from

Their restoration effort caught on and many businesses followed suit and later became a bustling center of attractions, entertainment and popular Galveston Mardi Gras Festival and Victorian-themed Christmas is

held annually.

The old fashioned trolley is still in operation where you can explore the downtown area or with a horse drawn carriage if you prefer unhurried jaunt.

If you’re into antique hunting, there are antique galleries where many items dating back in the 1800s could be purchased - that is if you’re willing and motivated to dispose of couple grand.

While meandering the whole time I was there; it instilled a nostalgic vibe in me and surely for many.

Noticing the locals dressed up in the bygone era adds drama to the scene and pleasurable experience it was to be among them transiently.

Here are some tips to avoid unnecessary repair cost.

My purpose is educate most of people that does have any clue when comes to repair or scheduled maintenance of your vehicle.

Unnecessary replacement of parts.

If the mechanic or service advisor says your car needs a replacement part, ask to be shown which part needs replacing and use a marker or some means to distinguish it later. Always let the them know that you want the old part back--this way you know the item was actually replaced. If you’re still mistrustful, you can always have the part looked at by another

mechanic to make sure it was defective.

Charge for unauthorized work.

Always request a repair estimate or work order that itemizes everything you’ve authorized. Don’t sign a work order unless it’s completely filled out and you understand what it says. Generally the cost of the repair should vary above the original estimate by no more than 10%. Before authorizing even more work, make sure you know the exact dollar amount. Never tell your mechanic or service advisor , “Do whatever is necessary.”

You can poll other shops to find out how much in your area are charging for common repairs and maintenance.

Charge for unnecessary work.

Beware if your mechanic’s idea of “scheduled maintenance” bears little resemblance to the recommendations in your owner’s manual. Some shops

recommending extra and often unnecessary procedures, such as engine, transmission flushes, tire rotation emission service or by scheduling some tasks prematurely.

Be especially concerned if the shop makes every recommendation sound like an emergency Misdiagnosis of a problem.

When a mechanic provides a diagnosis of your car’s problem, ask questions. Make sure the diagnosis agrees with the symptoms. If your engine alert light is on, ask what causes that problem.

Check temperature and oil pressure warning lights immediately. If you’re unsure, read your owner’s manual and don’t continue driving until you understand the warning’s significance.

A good defence against for any expensive repair, is to get a second opinion. This is particularly important when it comes to engine or automatic transmission

repairs where it’s difficult to tell if the Repair Shop is being honest about repair work. If you can still drive the car, just take it to another shop and see if you get the same diagnosis. If the second shop suggests a different repair, you should ask about the repairs recommended by the first shop--it could be a case of something being overlooked by the first shop, the second one, or both.

Even the best shops can make mistakes, so every bad repair isn’t necessarily an attempted rip-off. If you suspect you’re being “taken for a ride,” the first step is to ask for the

manager if there is a definite chain of command.

When problems don’t get resolved as quickly as they should, it’s best to avoid angry confrontations. Be certain to let the right person know that you’re following the proper procedures and have been frustrated in your efforts.

Make the mechanic justify the initial repair. Even if it was an honest misdiagnosis, the shop should refund the amount of the first repair or discount the next one. If the mechanic gets the diagnosis wrong again, stop replacing parts and replace the shop.

This time of the year, we pray for the cause of unity of all Christians and all peoples of good will from many other religions working together for the good of all humanity.

As we reflect on Christian unity, we have to address our own respective sense of unity within our own church.

We cannot really speak about unity with other Christians when we don’t appreciate and exercise our own commitment to unity among ourselves as members of our respective communities. In turn, we can only speak about such commitment to unity in our community when we live the unity and peace that should characterize our personal relationships in our loved ones in our respective families.

In the absence of this sense of unity, some people have decided to fashion a life of aloneness and loneliness to escape the hurtful experiences in community and companionship. In a way, we have learned to avoid relationships in order or avoid

being hurt. We avoid reaching out. We avoid getting involved in the activities and programs because we want to be left to ourselves. But as Christians, we have to reach out. Spreading the Good News is possible through our personal interaction with people. Like the original apostles who were chosen by Christ in our gospel today, we are sent to proclaim the Good News of peace, love and unity to all peoples, start-

ing with our own families and communities.

It is ironic that the major conflicts in our world today are related to religion. Religion, which teaches that we have to love one another, has become the cause of division and violence. Marriage and family, which most religions consider sacred, have become the venue for unspeakable physical, psychological and sexual abuse. Churches, which act as the guardian

of sexual ethics, have become in recent years the respondent for sexual abuse crimes. Religion has become more and more the reason for terrorist activism.

Unity, based on mere human efforts, is an illusion. Unity has to be referred to Someone beyond ourselves. The transforming power of Christian love is what can make our life in community bearable and even beautiful.

Dear Madame KC, Tawagin nyo na lamang po akong “lady tuliro”. Talaga pong tuliro ang puso ko kahit nung ako’y bata bata pa. Ngayon ay 30+years old na po ako, hanggang ngayon po ay single pa rin ako. Pero syempre nangangarap din akong magkapamilya at lumigaya. Pero sa ngayon ay nahaharap na naman ako sa malaking problema pag dating sa pag ibig.

College palang po ako noon, dalawa ang sabay kong boyfriend, nagawa kong pagsabayin sila ng hindi nila nalalaman. Masaya ako sa piling nilang pareho sa loob ng 2 taon at alam kong mahal na mahal nila ako. Subalit hindi ko alam kung sino ba talaga ang dapat kong mahalin. Pag ka-graduate ko, pareho ko silang hiniwalayan.

Noon naman nagsimula ng magtrabaho (2000), nag mahal akong muli, subalit sa di inaasahang pagkakataon ay naging dalawa ulit ang naging bf ko. Wala silang alam na dalawa sila sa buhay ko.

May katangian ung isa na gustong gusto ko na wala naman sa isa. Mayroon

Ayokong magkamali at mabigo sa pagpili ng tamang lalaking mamahalin dahil ayokong mag sisi sa bandang huli.
