Effective December 13, 2016, the cumulative duration limit no longer applies to all current and future work permit applications under the Temporary Foreign Workers Program (as per public policy pursuant to section 25.2 of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act). This includes applications submitted in Canada, overseas and at ports of entry. As of December 13, 2016, an application in progress is no longer subject to cumulative duration, whether it is work with a permit [R200] or without a permit

[R186]. However, officers must continue to be satisfied that the requirements of paragraph 183(1)(a) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations (IRPR) are met, along with other eligibility criteria, such as the need for a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). Clients who are within the restoration period may reapply for a work permit. Foreign nationals in Canada who do not hold a valid work permit and are not eligible to apply for restoration must apply for a work permit from outside Canada. As for applications under process, the processing officer has requested that the client provide further evidence that they are within the four-year limit, the client may need to be contacted. The officer will inform the client that cumulative duration no longer applies, and further evidence is no longer required. Other eligibility criteria, such as the need for an LMIA, will be assessed. But for applications where a final decision is

CELEBRATING CHRISTMAS the filipino traditional way to generation. From the early days Christmas is a celebration of simplicity and purity with our observance of our customs and traditions. We have experienced and discovered the true joys of Christmas that make Christmas meaningful through these traditions. Nowadays during this time of the year, the Christmas spirits are all around. Homes are aglow with rainbow-colored lanterns (Parol) and lights blinking on Christmas trees and in the streets. Every church has a way of providing divinely inspiring music floating through the air from within their hallowed walls. Group of carolers sing their merry way from house to house and at times to the accompaniment of fireworks, unleashing a medley of dancing colors in the skies. Everywhere the air is suffused with spontaneous gaiety and festivity during Christ-
mas time. . Christmas remains the most observed Christian holidays. It is the much-awaited season of the year. The Philippines, a predominantly Christian nation has earned a distinction of celebrating the world’s longest Christmas season. Christmas carols are heard as early as September. It is only after Epiphany – the first Sunday after New Year’s Day-that the Christmas decorations are removed. The Filipino traditional way of celebrating Christmas is ushered in by the nine-day dawn masses that start December 16th known as “Simbang Gabi” or night mass. Most churches are ablaze in multi-colored lights outlining their facades and serene “Belen” (the nativity scene). This mass is the most important Filipino tradition during Christmas time. It begins as early as four in the morning. Church bells ring as a way to wake up
people. Going to mass as early for nine consecutive days is meant to show the churchgoers devotion to their faith and heighten anticipation for the nativity of the LORD JESUS. After hearing mass, families partake of the traditional Christmas delicacies, either during breakfast at home and or immediately outside the church where they are sold. There are vendors who offer a bounty of native delicacies including bibingka,(rice flour and egg based cake cooked using coals on top and under) Puto-Bumbong, (a purple sticky rice delicacy which is steamed in bamboo tubes, with brown sugar and coconut shavings as condiments) salabat (hot ginger tea) and tsokolate (thick Spanish cocoa from cacao). On the 24th of December, the day before Christmas day, is the much-anticipated noche-buena-the traditional Christmas eve feast after the midnight
mass. The noche-buena is the family midnight feast-- Family members and friends dine together around twelve mid -night on traditional nocheBuena. Some would open presents/gifts at this time. There is also exchanging gifts from friends. Christmas day is primarily a family affair. Preferably in the morning, families visit members of the extended family notably the elders-grandparents-Lolo and Lola in order to pay their respects. This custom is an age-old tradition called “Pagmamano” done by touching one’s forehead to the elder’s hand, saying “Mano Po” Aguinaldo, regalo or money in the form of crisp, freshfrom the bank bills is given after the “Pagmamano” especially to younger children. A Christmas lunch usually follows the Christmas greetings to each other. The lunch is heavily dependent on the finances or budget of the family. Rich families
tend to prepare grand feasts that consist of Jamon, queso-de-bola, lechon, and other Filipino delicacies. Poor families choose to cook simple meals, nevertheless still special. When the family is settled after the lunch, the giving of gifts is usually done. Grandparents are expected to give gifts or Aguinaldo to their grandchildren, some to their godchildren or “inaanak”. On New Year eve, families gather for the “Media Noche” or midnight meal—a feast that is also supposed to symbolize their hopes for a prosperous new year. Christmas season officially ends on the feast of the Three Kings, also known as the feast of Epiphany. The feast of the Three Kings is also known in other countries as Twelfth Night, referring to the twelve days between Christmas Day and the coming of the Three Kings. And it seems uncertainty and selfies tend to breed vanity (excessive pride in or admiration of one’s own appearance or achievements) and nurture narcissism. Selfies motivated by narcissism and vanity is sure to distort reality. Moreover, “selfieing” slowly becomes an
antidote to uncertainty, shielding one from his/ her fear and anxiety of the future. Simply put, the perpetuated focus on solely the self is ultimately counterproductive to harmony and understanding. For this year, 2017, let’s ‘selfie’ sparingly and seek authentic connections; courage, respect and humility. These are values that will carry us through thick and thin for the rest of the year.

Government stops Zambales Association controversial first-come, Christmas Party first-serve parent visa application process OTTAWA -- The federal government is scrapping an immigration application system that saw some Canadians paying hundreds of dollars to ensure paperwork to sponsor family members was at the top of the pile. The Liberals announced Wednesday that instead, applications for the coveted parent and grandparent visa program will now be selected by lottery, and not by which ones arrive first. Beginning January 3, Canadians will have 30 days to fill out an online form indicating their desire to sponsor someone. From those, immigration officials will randomly draw 10,000 individuals who will then be asked to submit the full application within 90 days. The change comes after The Canadian Press reported earlier this year that the old first-come, first-serve system was seeing couriers charge more
than $400 to guarantee applications would be at the top of the pile. That raised concerns that the visas were going to those who could afford to pay the high fees or camp out for hours at the Mississauga, Ont., immigration office -- the only place in Canada accepting the forms. Immigration Minister John McCallum says the new system is designed for fairness. “We’re ensuring everyone can access the application process by giving them the same chance to have their name chosen,” he said in a statement. The popular parent and grandparent program routinely receives thousands more applications than there are spaces. Last year, 14,000 applications were received for what was initially only 5,000 spots. That level had been set by the previous Conservative government after they had closed the program entire-
ly in 2011 to spend three years whittling away a massive backlog. When it re-opened in 2014, they put an annual cap on applications of 5,000 while they continued to work at the backlog. Last year, the Liberals raised the intake to 10,000 and will accept the same number of applications for 2017. While the online form to indicate interest will be available as of Jan. 3, the full application will not be posted until Jan. 9. But couriers have already started taking reservations to deliver them, billing on their websites that they guarantee a position at the front of the line and demanding payment up front. Fees appear to begin around $60 per package, though one courier was reportedly charging $200 according to conversations in an online forum dedicated to Canadian immigration issues.

Q. #1) TELL US ABOUT YOUR SELF? First of all, I would like to thanks for giving me this Opportunity to introduce my self. I am ROMMEL FARINAS, I moved to Canada with my parents and 2 other sisters since 2006 with the help of our older sister who happened to be a “Bread-Winner” in our family since day one. About my family back ground, we are eleven at strength, and I am second to the last:). Just like many others, I come from a poor family where I have been through hardships in life too and I called it “isang kahig-isang tuka”. There were lots of times where i encountered crisis. I witnessed the (giyera or war) the military against N.P.A, and it took place at my home town CAPIZ and it was actually at my Grand parents house when the N.P.A slept over at my grand parents house and when the military found out there and that’s how the giyera started. I experienced eating only rice with no viand but “salt”. Sometimes we only eat once a day and again, just rice and if we could see any thing in the kitchen like onions, gingers, garlics and tuyo then we would mix it together and call it “adobo express”.That way at least we survive for the day. I also experienced eating banana na saba in 7 days in a row and because I am determined somehow I survive with out worrying too much. It seemed so funny how we divide the food to each other so that no one is left behind. That one piece of “tuyo” would fit into two or three and even four people inside the house. My parents would tell me while eating that banana, let’s just imagine- you are in a high end restaurant, eating a fried chicken so it makes me feel rich, happy and full at the same time just to let the day pass and so I followed what they say with a smile on my face but tears in my eyes. Since then I would always complain to my parents why we are so poor while others are not. Having that 11- siblings in the family is not a joke nor easy. I would tell my parents why we are so many siblings in the family when we knew we got nothing to eat? My parents said, we don’t have everything, but we have enough! Enough love to share, enough life to live and enough dreams to prosper. People were telling us we would not be successful because our parents cannot afford to send all of us to school at the same time. However, my parents never listened to what people say and in fact, it gave them more strength to push it through the life so They used their initiatives and resources just to send us in school and gave us all our needs

The reason why we resided to Canada it is because of poverty, to find out what its best for us, to see a greener future and above all, for my mother. My mother was diagnosed in cancer in ovary since when we were in the Philippines and thanks God that he works in mysterious way as always. As soon as we got here in Canada she got confined and eventually cured from it. At the moment my mom is doing well, strong and alive. We are living in a simple life here together though there’s an ups and downs but we still catch up to it and spend time for each other. It sounds funny that we got so many families and relatives here including cousins, nephews, nieces, uncles, aunties, lolos, lolas, distant relatives from both sides not to mention their names but they are part of our families and to sum it all up, we are huge families and can fit in one big community hall. We always have a get together especially during
Christmas Party, birth day party, and in any other special occasions. As far as my education is concerned I have done my elementary and high school back in the Philippines. Ever since, I am an achiever among others in the family I was an active in any extra curricular activities such as; sports, Dance, Singing , Acting, Pageant, and all academic excellence category competition. Since I am competitive person, I am into anything in terms of competitions as I have to give my everything so that I can maintain my high grades and to be always on the top in the class as my Dad always said to me-Being a winner is never an accident. Winning comes about by design, determination and positive action. Here in Canada, I went to SAIT and took up ENT-Electronics engineering Technology in 2007-2009. After that I worked to many different companies as I would like to explore my self and test what my capacities are until i ended up what we so called” jack of all traits, master of none!”. I really strived so hard in order to achieve what I really want in my life. I kept going and never give up. Because I am an explorer, so I have been experienced both bad and good stuffs, any kind of friends, wither bad or good. New payday loan laws further protect consumers Alberta now has the strongest protections for borrowers in Canada. Payday lenders are now required to provide all loans with instalment plans, with no penalty for early payback. This drastically reduces the interest rate, and helps prevent Albertans from falling into a cycle of borrowing. New rules also restrict the number of times a lender can make pre-authorized withdrawals, so borrowers don’t incur extra fees. These rules, now in effect, are the next step in implementing An Act to End Predatory Lending legislation that was introduced and passed this spring. “Albertans told us they want lower interest rates, longer payback periods and better alternatives. We listened and took action. I’m proud to be part of a government that supports families by improving consumer protections.” Stephanie McLean, Minister of Service Alberta The Act also requires government to encourage financial institutions and community groups to offer alternative short-term
loans that are fair and accessible. On Dec. 7, Servus Credit Union launched its Fast Forward Small Loan ? a fair, convenient alternative to costly payday loans. It offers cash in less than an hour, with no fees and penalties. It has an annual interest rate of 19 per cent, with a payback period of two months to two years. “Our new loan offers Albertans credit that is flexible and affordable. Instalment payments Instalment payment plans are a requirement at all payday loan companies. Specifically: Lenders must allow borrowers to repay the loan over a term of between 42 and 62 days. The instalments must be spread over at least three pay periods. Instalments must be substantially the same (i.e. within $10 of each other). Pre-authorized debit attempts Under the new regulations, lenders cannot repeatedly attempt to withdraw pre-authorized debit amounts when there are insufficient funds, nor can they charge large fees to borrowers when pre-authorized debits repeatedly fail. After a pre-authorized debit does not go through, a lender may make one additional attempt to obtain repayment via pre-authorized debit.
The amount of this additional attempt must be the same as the initial attempt, plus the allowed NSF fee and any interest because of the default. The additional attempt must be made within 30 days after the payday lender was notified that the initial attempt was unsuccessful. Note: This will not prevent a borrower from making additional/alternative attempts where a lender has consent from the borrower for a specific amount on a specific date. Fast facts Alberta has the lowest interest rate for payday loans in Canada. In August, the rate was reduced from $23 for every $100 borrowed, to $15 per $100. All fees must be included in this rate. A payday loan is a loan of $1,500 or less that has a term of 62 days or less. More than 20 payday loan companies currently operate more than 220 branches in Alberta. Grant Programs Improve Access for Non-Profits Alberta non-profit organizations will have a clearer path to funding as of result of changes to two primary Community Grant programs - the Community Facility Enhancement Program (CFEP) and the Community Initiatives Program (CIP). “Investment in Alberta’s non-profit and voluntary sector helps to build strong families and communities and creates new business and employment opportunities. Changes to both CFEP and CIP will help better meet the needs of non-profits by addressing funding gaps, streamlining access and providing clarity to the grants process. Saskatoon gets top marks when it comes to the health performance of the city and its citizens, according to a new ranking comparing 10 Canadian cities. The Conference Board of Canada released its first-ever City Health Monitor report on Tuesday, assigning grades for the physical and socio-economic health of 10 cities based on 24 indicators in four categories: Life satisfaction. Population health. Healthy lifestyle. Access to health-care services. “We want to start a conversation about how healthy our cities are and where can we strive to make improvements,” said Greg Sutherland, principal economist with the Conference Board of Canada. Saskatoon, Calgary and Winnipeg each earn an “A” grade, with Saskatoon garnering the top overall spot due to its ranking on life satisfaction and relative strength in population health and healthy lifestyle. “We certainly have
everything you could possibly want, maybe other than warm weather,” Saskatoon resident Ross Harwood said with a laugh. It’s not just about how healthy people are but also how healthy they feel, Sutherland said, such as how satisfied they are with their life in general and how much they feel part of a community. “Canadian cities for the most part rank really high in this.” Calgary’s second-place ranking is attributed to its ranking in life satisfaction and healthy lifestyles, while Winnipeg rounds out the Top 3 by placing first in the accessto-health-care category and with relatively good results in the others. Montreal finished in 10th place and is the only city to receive an overall grade of “D.” The city was assigned a “D” in three of the four categories: healthy lifestyle, access to health-care services and life satisfaction. In previous research, Sutherland said Montreal ranked well in terms of being a great place to live. But smoking rates are
higher, influenza immunization rates are lower and it doesn’t fare as well as other Canadian cities on life satisfaction. Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre disagreed with his city’s grade. “When I’m looking from at all other indicators, they’re saying Montreal is No. 1. Where’s that D coming from? Didn’t do my homework?” The remaining six cities earned a “B” grade. Vancouver was highest in this group by ranking first in population health and healthy lifestyles, but it suffered poor results in the other two categories. Quebec City, Ottawa-Gatineau, Halifax, Edmonton and Toronto each showed “decent” results in one category, the report’s authors said, but faltered elsewhere. The Conference Board of Canada cautioned that benchmarking is not an end onto itself, but is intended to highlight each city’s strengths and weaknesses to determine what level of performance is possible and to investigate improvements. Keeping fit on holidays is very easy if you follow these simple steps. 1. First step is, now that we talked about the holidays, always train before meals. Try to do an intensive training before big family holiday meals like Thanksgiving or Christmas feast. This way you won’t have to eat while feeling guilty for the amount of food you’re intaking. Moreover, you’d put that meal to a good use! 2. But in order to have an

The Interlake Following my visit to Winnipeg, I headed north to the Interlake region to explore the history and fishing Village of Hecla Island. Approximately 2 hours north of Winnipeg, this island is largely influenced by the Icelandic community. They started arriving to the island in 1876 to flee Mount Hecla in Iceland as the one of the most active volcanoes. Upon arriving to the island, I checked in the campground, unfortunately the campground was full due to the Triathlon event going on at that time. Great to know that they have an overflow site which was perfectly fine since I was only tenting. The trails next to my site were quite impressive that connect to the main road that leads to many amenities. Gull harbor Marina was just about a kilometer away where supplies and food items can be purchased. There is a lodge where people that arrive by boats can stay; private cottages can also be rented to get the real outdoor experience throughout the year. Many trails from the marina can be access to many interesting features. The lighthouse as one of the most impressive trail was only 3 kilometers. The views of the water and peaceful surroundings were calming and have a meditative vibe. I spent an ample time here to take in the views and photograph the area and had lunch. The opposite end from the lighthouse was another trail which I was most interested to see the viewing tower. Upon arriving there, I climbed the 40 foot tower; at the top there was a platform which can be walked around to see the whole island unobstructed by heavily forested foreground. It was indeed impressive to see as far as my eye can see. On the ground level, the lush vegetation and seems like a well manicured picnic area; another trail with sign Sunset beach was quite inviting. Since it was getting late in the afternoon, it would be perfect stop as I make my way back to the campground. I spent some time here exploring and photographing the beach and many more natural settings. The campground was only a 20 minutes away, to my surprise, there was no one else there but me. I had the whole place to myself. I was up in the late hour walking around taking photos of star studded sky and the Milky Way was clearly visible. Gimli to Winnipeg Beach I arrived in the morning the following day and began exploring the

landscape and the bustling town of Gimli located on the shore of Lake Winnipeg. It used to be a farming community; the influx of visitors would later replace farming with cottages primarily for fishing adventures. It is a popular place for visitors from Winnipeg to spend a day at the beach and enjoy some of the most exquisite art galleries. Gimli also is largely populated by Icelandic descents since their arrival in the late 1800s. They hold an annual Icelandic festival during August long weekend and have been going on since 1932. I had the chance to try one of the sea food restaurants called Beach Boy Restaurant. I can attest that it’s the best sea food restaurant I’ve been to. Freshly caught from the lake and cooked to perfection served with all the trimmings was an exceptional treat. The ambiance reminds me of some of the beach front restaurant I’ve been to in Hawaiian island. Not having any specific place in mind but just to explore the historical sites and villages. I arrived in Riverton. I explored the neighborhood of this small town and found it was very interesting learning about the early settlers here. The area was populated mostly by Icelandic ancestry since their arrival in 1870s as it is today have a significant present in the business community. One of the most influential residents there was an Icelandic homesteader Guttommur Guttormsson. He developed his Icelandic Canadian perspective where he left his long lasting literary and poetic legacy. He lived there until his death at 88 years of age. One of his poets that have become popular is called Sandy Bar. The bridge right across his monument is the newly designed Icelandic River Bridge that crosses the Icelandic River is an important feature of this village, it provided access for the residents for all the amenities that village offers. Just 2 kilometers away from Riverton is the town of Winnipeg Beach. From the time when I lived in Winnipeg, there has been a tremendous change to this community. I was impressed how they constructed the pathways along the beach leading to the residential areas. It brought back a lot of memories; my entire family would go there for picnic and we would go swimming and play soccer. It was such a fun time; I used to love playing arcades nearby.We would walk tirelessly and ate to our hearts content. In the later years. I participated in the 10km race form Winnipeg Beach to Gimli during the Icelandic festival. There was a lot of celebration, singing and dancing and people enjoying their family time. It brings such joy to reminisce those days. To be continued…

DAVAO CITY | Nov. 24 (PNA) -- President Rodrigo Duterte vowed to pursue fiscal and economic reforms as his administration’s approach to make the country the world’s top investment destination of choice. Mr. Duterte told the media upon his arrival at the Davao International Airport Wednesday night, that he highlighted this during the Asia-Pacific Economic (APEC) Leaders’ Meeting in Lima Peru, where he engaged with foreign and business leaders. Fresh from his participation in the APEC, President Duterte said the Philippines is on track with unparalleled trajectory of growth but this can only be sustained when
everyone works hard together. “If not surpass, what the Philippines so far has achieved to improve the ease of doing business, suppress criminality and eliminate corruption,” he said, describing the Philippines’ presence and participation in APEC as an economic necessity. In the review of economic goals, the President said leaders of world economies agreed APEC has helped spur growth in trade although there was keen awareness that free trade must benefit, not only the big businesses. He said the Philippines’ position was to go beyond free trade and instead focus on economic and trade policies that must immediately yield benefits for the country’s Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) that form the backbone of APEC economies.
For MSMEs to become global players, the President said the government must provide a supportive policy framework that ensure an economic environment for all businesses to thrive. He vowed that his administration will work towards providing supportive policy framework and to make sure that economic growth will be felt by all. According to him, the Philippine delegation spelled out priority areas for economic cooperation and investments. He said they also explored opportunities that will open up avenues for sharing knowledge and expertise, forge linkages and learn best practices. CELEBRATING CHRISTMAS out, so that the Three Kings would leave behind gifts like candy or money inside. Christmas would not be complete without the traditional Philippine Christmas symbols and decorations. Christmas lights are strung about, as the tail of the Star of Bethlehem in belen, the star symbolizes our faith in Christ as the eternal light which flourishes the way to HIS kingdom., Christmas trees symbolize the triumph of the spirit over man’s wickedness, his glorious victory standing out like a banner at the head of marchers in the grand procession of life. Angels symbolizes the celestial beings which is part in the drama of redemption. The animals at the stable symbolize the violent passion of man’s lower nature according to mystics. The savior was sent to redeem him from his fall and his state of sin. The manger reminds us of the lowly surroundings that signify the humility of the REDEEMER, as stated in the scriptures. Every house big or small is decorated with colorful lights. Filipino homes and
buildings are adorned with beautiful star lanterns, called “parol” and the “belen” representing the Nativity scene. It depicts the Infant Jesus Christ in the manger, surrounded by the Virgin Mary, St Joseph, the shepherds, their flock, the Magi, some stable animals and angels. Children also celebrate Christmas with the traditional Christmas caroling –going from house to house singing Christmas carols using tambourines made with “Tansans” strung on a piece of wire , then wait expectantly for the owner of the house to reward them with coins. The famous songs they usually render is “Ang Pasko ay Sumapit and “ Sa Maybahay” Silent Night, Joy To the World and other famous carols. Christmas is a season of love. We were taught to observe with holy, joy and alleluias not only from December 25 to January 6 but throughout our life. Christmas is for giving. Since the first time the joyful yearly event has been celebrated around the world, to remember the arrival of the SAVIOUR, the idea
of sharing and receiving has become the most significant doctrine. The tradition of good-natured exchanges of tangible and intangible gifts has continuously went on through the years that one can only imagine how many presents have exactly been distributed and accepted by individuals in all of history who have religiously observed the traditional way of celebrating the birth of JESUS CHRIST. On cold winter mornings, some folks will fire up their cars and leave them running for 10, 20, maybe even 30 minutes, thinking they’re reducing wear and tear by letting their cars warm up gently. But Experts (Automotive Engineers ) that’s a bad idea for your car. The conventional wisdom that you should idle your car up to operating temperature comes from the days of carburetors, which needed several minutes of idling to get to an operating temperature where they’d run smoothly. Modern vehicles with fuel-injected en-

gines, the ECU (computer inside your car) can adjust itself to idle perfectly even in sub-zero weather. Idling an engine doesn’t really build up much heat at all, compared to driving it. What will happen in a cold idling engine? And the hidden damage of letting your car idle for a long time on a cold day? Engine oil dilution or engine oil mix with fuel. It turns out, while you might have thought that letting your car slowly warm up was reducing wear and tear, all that idling time leads to raw gasoline seeping into the oil, breaking down the oil’s lubrication properties and increasing the wear.
So what should you do? Start it up, make sure all your windows are clear of ice, snow, fog, and just drive. The engine
will warm up faster, and therefore you’ll get nice warm heat coming out of the vents sooner, which is what you want anyway.
Bottom line is, it takes longer, wastes fuel, increases the wear and tear of your engine.

Advent, as presented in the liturgical calendar, is a way of re-introducing Christ’s presence into our lives. It is a period of re-opening our eyes of faith to the reality of God’s becoming present in our humanity through Christ. It is an opportunity for us to re-examine the various ways of God’s presence in our midst, brought about by the Mystery of the Incarnation whose fullness was realized when Christ was born in time and in flesh. Christ is present in the Sacraments, particularly in the Eucharist which He has commanded us to celebrate to perpetuate His presence. Christ is duly present in the papacy and the priesthood. Christ is present in Scripture, defined as the word of God in
words of men. In the ministry of preaching, we have to understand the difficult meaning of the prophetic office of the Church where the preacher’s words, however inadequate, are used by Christ to convey His message. He is in our midst every time we pray together in His name. Christ’s presence in each of us, created in His image and likeness, is a level of divine presence we have to appreciate more and more. To see the face of Christ in the poor and the destitute is for us more theoretical than real. Christ is present in the flashes of insight that open our eyes to see and recognize our wounded humanity which He has redeemed. The levels of Christ’s presence are too varied and too numerous to be missed, if only we have an open mind and heart. Advent is the liturgical time to renew our faith in these different levels of Christ’s presence. It
is about re-discovering Christ’s presence in our life As Church, we are a people of presence. We commit to a ministry of presence, to make Christ transparent in our lives, to be Christ’s hands and feet in this earthly pilgrimage. Christian life is about presence, about being generous with our time with one another. During this season of giving, let us give gifts of personal presence., like promising to visit a sick or dying friend or committing to volunteer to help with community work. The best things we can give as gifts are not things. This season is about self-giving, following the example of Christian who gave up his divinity to share in our humanity, rooted in the first Christmas, when Christ decided to be present in our midst through His becoming flesh and living among us.

It took me a couple minutes to park my car in front of Tom Baker Centre. We were two weeks into December and the bone chilling wind kept my face rigid and frosty. Our resolve to visit a friend was not deterred by the deep-freeze-like temperature outside. We found ourselves on the third floor of the Centre. However, confusion ensued. The nurse advised us to proceed to the main building. Evidently, reading directions was not my forte. Moments later we found our way to her room. Cindy (pseudonym) was already surrounded by friends. Stitches covered her bald head with tubes and monitors functioning as they should. Her right eye opened and her lips cracked a smile when she heard our greetings. She raised her right hand to acknowledge our presence. After 16 hours of major operation by about 10 doctors, seeing Cindy’s body condition, motionless on the bed, moistened
our eyes. We could only imagine what she underwent. However, we were told all her vitals were well and normal. Another friend in the room quizzed her to affirm the prognosis. Cindy in her soft answer said, “My husband is 6’2” and the size of his shoes is 16”. Astonishment filled the room. Even the birthdays of her daughters were correctly noted. Stories of encouragement and inspiration continued. We saw her head nodding slightly and smiles from her lips indicating her joy of our presence. A knock on the door interrupted the flow of our chit chatting. Two nurses entered and proceeded with their patient care routine. Oxygen and blood pressure normal. Bandages were changed. And the nurses’ procedures silenced us for a few minutes. When one of the nurses lifted her right hand there was a rubber latex glove filled with water – like a swollen palm. She picked it up and asked “what’s this for?” I attempted to
explain about the water filled glove (WFG) but another patient required their attention. In our first few minutes in the room before the nurses’ routine check-up we had already noticed the (WFG). Cindy insightfully indicated to us why she held the WFG all the time. Aside from the physical comfort it brought to her heavy, sore, and swollen palm, WFG was a substitute to her husband’s tender and loving hand. Even if Andy (pseudonym) was not in the room, the WFG was enough to give her a sense of peace and security. The idea was brain child of Cindy’s visiting younger sister; Maria (pseudonym). Out of her medical practice in Manila, Maria introduced WFG for Cindy’s fast recovery and benefit. WFG is simple, unique and most importantly psychologically powerful. As we left the room Cindy held the WFG firmly, cracked a smile and tears fell from her left eye. With a lump in my throat, I left speechless.

Yung eldest 5 years old and yung youngest 3 years old now. The problem started January 2014 ng madiscover ko na may ibang babae ang asawa ko. Boss nya yun sa work. Kinausap ko yung asawa ko and ang naging sagot nya sa akin ay hindi nya alam kung kailan nya maiiwan dahil masakit daw. Mahal ko ang asawa ko kaya kahit ganun, nanatili ako sa tabi nya. Tinext ko pa nga yung babae at kinausap ng maayos. I understand na hindi din naman niya ginusto mangyari lahat ng ‘yon at minahal lang niya ang asawa ko. Pero the point is may asawa na ang lalaking minahal nya. Ang nakakatawa ay naging mag kaibigan kami ng other woman ni mister, in the
process ng sinasabi niyang paglayo sa asawa ko. Nakinig ako sa mga daing nya. Kung gano kahirap ang lahat (thru text msgs), kinaya ko. March 2014 ng sabihin sa akin ng asawa ko na natsismis sila nung boss nya sa work. Kasi may nakabasa daw ng mga love letters nila. So, to save my husband’s reputation (para di sya mawalan ng work) nakipag-usap ako sa mga kasamahan niya at sinabing hindi totoo ‘yon. I thought ng time na ‘yon wala na talaga sila. May 2014 ng madiscover ko na tuloy pa rin pala ang relationship nila. That time talagang minura ko yung babae at sinugod ko. I felt really betrayed that time. Sobrang nasaktan ako. Nalaman ko din na kaya pala gusto magpadistino ng ibang province ang asawa ko ay para doon ituloy ang
love story nila. Pero patuloy ang naging pagsasama namin ng asawa ko. June 2014 ng mabasa ko sa cp ng asawa ko yung text messages nung babae. Meaning tuloy pa rin relationship nila. September 2014 ng may nakapagsabi sa aking nagsasama na sila. Nasaktan ako at talagang wala ng pag-asang ma-save ang aming relasyong mag-asawa. March 2016 nung magkaroon ako ng ibang relationship na ibinigay sa amin ng mga bata ang pagmamahal na hindi binigay ng asawa ko. November 20014 ng aminin ng asawa ko sa akin na nagsasama na sila nung girl. Until now nagsasama na sila at kami ng bf ko ng 9months na. Maraming nagsasabi na mali pero sumuko na ko sa asawa ko na 2 years kong inunawa. Mali bang magmahal uli ako? Tanggap nya ang mga anak

ROMMEL FARINAS was miserable and I was about to give up. But there was one thing that it kept me going , when I remembered my past, when I tried to recall my life struggles and when I recalled the blessings that God has showered me and to my family. Since that day on I became strong and brave to face whatever life’s adversity and reality. That made me become morestronger and motivated. As I go along with my journey I will make sure that I am not going to waste any thing , any chance that whatever opportunity comes along I will grab it and embrace it as what life has to offer. Life must go on and I don’t have any regrets in my life because I don’t consider it as “regrets”. I consider them as mistakes and lessons, and that mistakes and lessons made me who I am today. Life is beautiful if we know how to live. Thus, we only live once but if we do it right, once is enough. Q.#2) WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS AS NEW MR. PHILIPPINES CANADA 2016? My goals would be giving back to the community as I have now a plat form to speak in the best way I can; as an advocate to the environment in every possible way, also to give a high light of what my title is all about, to help and encourage other aspirants to show their hidden talents not just the beauty but to give relevance of the beauty pageant in the
society. Also to educate them that this pageant is also a good program to the people especially the youth to diversify their minds rather than doing some bad stuffs(acting like a gangsters, adik kuno) and furthermore it gives them good visions in life because I believe that each voices must be heard. I want to contribute my voice with the best of my knowledge to share what I have, to set as a good example to the younger generations to inspire them to do THE SAME! Q. #3)ANY INTERESTING LIFE EVENTS LAST MONTH AND THE INCOMING MONTHS? There have been lots of interesting life events last month. One of them is when I joined Mr. Philippines, Canada 2016. I joined the pageant is to have a sense of achievement and a sense of fulfillment. The primary reason for joining is to develop and boost my self esteem and confidence (syempre para manalo!alangan naman trip-trip lang db?)hehe…! Being part of that pageant was one of my biggest dreams. It gave big changes and impact to my life. New visions in life, better communication skills, sharing advices, more friends, and showing out my hidden talents and like I said, contributing my voice to the best way I can. That I can use my title to speak up and help raise awareness to make a change and to start my own advocacy and to tell my story here and there and to put an end to “cyber bullying”. I was being bullied since grade school and even up to now so I will speak and give a high light to it.

Chef Ric as fondly called by his peers and close friends, wore many hats beyond his regular chef hat. From a humble start in 1989 as banquet waiter , his due diligence earned him the title Commis Chef in 1994 in the Philippines. Chef Ric also challenged himself and honed further skills while working by joining carving competitions using vegetables, fruits, cheese and even ice. His great stride has been noticed by few schools and invited him as one of the resource speakers and key person when it comes to carving. Our featured chef, never rest on his laurels and literally travelled the 7 seas for better future. He became Chef Gardmanger at Saudi Arabia for several years and also became De Partie in one of the Asian cruise lines in 1999. In March 2008, when Canada opens its door to him, Chef Ric and wife Luz migrated to the Great White North. Although he started his career all over again, as all around cook/ line cook, Chef Ric enjoyed the journey. Presently employed as Chef de Partie for Hotel Blackfoot Calgary, Chefalso made
sure to give back to the community and his pursue his passion and education. He is one of the active national members for Canadian Culinary Federationof Cooks and Chefs, Board Member of the Philippine Culinary Federation of Canada. As Chef Artist, Chef Ric always share
his skills and talents through volunteering and joining competitions. He has received several recognition in this field including 3rd place at for the 1st Annual Art of Food Competition by Rotary Club of Edmonton, Southeast-Fruit and Vegetable Carving on Stage.
