A 23-year-old IT graduate, from the Philippines, is now facing charges for violating the Anti-Cybercrime Act. This is after an arrest made by The National Bureau of Investigation on Thursday, April 21, 2016. The suspect is now in NBI custody for the hacking of the Commission on Elections public information website. NBI Director Virgilio Mendez said the suspected hacker was nabbed Wednesday night through the help of intelligence gathered by the NBI Cybercrime Division.

Lao Tzu. There are 20+ Filipino organizations (big and small) in Calgary. Each group membership roughly averages no more than 100.

It is safe to assume that eight percent (8% or 2,000) of more than 25,000 (+/-) Filipino-Calgarians are adherents to a group. And more Pinoy groups are cropping out each year.

The importance of belongingness, inclusion, camaraderie and unity are the pillars keeping these groups alive and kicking.

The common goal was and will always be to encourage more to join groups and experience the above values. Consequently, members are given the opportunity to grow personally and collectively.

The nobility of purpose by each group is unquestionably in the right direction.

In pursuing this direction, however, challenges are scattered along the way.

Collaboration between and among groups is seldom achieved and will, at times, produce friction

and all-out animosity with expectations and roles not being met. Leadership ego gets in the way and everyone wants to be the leader of the pack.

Furthermore, there are others who simply want a larger portion of the funds cake. No honorarium, no volunteerism, one group’s approach is better than the other group. Somebody stole one’s idea. Etc...

Diversity and unity are not exclusive from each other. Groups can unite in the midst of diversity.

Like meadows and fields in spring time, different groups of vegetation grow and flourish. Each has exposure to life giving light of the sun. Each root system has access to the moisture of the soil. No certain plant group has the monopoly of the landscape. Only weeds hinder the growth of others. Let the sun shine and water nourish the field and meadows. Let the joy of celebration and unity be freely experienced and felt by many (if not all) Filipi-

By Filane Mikee Z. Cervantes MANILA, March 22 (PNA) -The University of the Philippines (UP) has emerged as the country’s premier university across four subjects, according to the latest figures published on Tuesday by the independent international rankings agency Quacquarelli Symonds (QS).

In the 2016 edition of QS World University Rankings by Subject, UP was ranked between 101-150 in English Language and Literature; in the 151-200 category for both Modern Languages and Agriculture and Forestry; and between the 301-400 range in the field of Medicine.

UP’s performance was less than stellar compared to last year’s rankings as it had landed places in 8 subjects including Communication & Media Studies, Development Studies,

(DF) -- The University of the Philippines Alumni Association of Alberta (UPAAA) and Pilipino Culinary Federation of Canada (PCFC) collaborated to showcase unity and cooperation during their in-house gathering in the NW community of Weston. Around 40 members and guests comfortably enjoyed the night with laughter, food and sharing. The initiative proved to be the right step to exemplify groups working together to foster understanding and cooperation.

Warm greetings and preliminaries set the positive tone of the night.

Reliving past school day memories and experiences cemented each UPAAA members’ affinity to their Alma matter. While members of PCFC meticulously prepared their culinary

creations with gusto. The aroma of foods on the table wetted everyone’s palates.

Moments later the crowd paid attention to the arrival of one of the guests, UP alumni and newly appointed Consul General of Alberta, Julius Torres. UPAAA President, Don De Gracia, introduced each member (including members of PCFC) to ConGen Torres.

After a short prayer happy guests formed line facing the food table.

At meal time the conversation started with the appreciation for the food. Then it jumped to sharing of opinion and information on the value of having consular office in Alberta. ConGen Torres mentioned a tentative timeline of the office’s opening and the exact address. He indicated that media outlets will be invited for the official news release.

As the night went on, Don indicated to one of the media persons in the crowd that “UPAAA’s role is to engage and facilitate unity, camaraderie and excellence between and among Filipino groups in our community through group collaboration.”

From the other side of the room Jun Causapin, leader of the PCFC interjected, “We offer our culinary masterpieces with excellence and quality to any group or association in our community. Just give us a call.”

The night ended with a clear sense of how unity, camaraderie and excellence interplayed between and among groups in Calgary.

This year’s results also saw top two universities in the Philippines, Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) and De La Salle University (DLSU), securing spots.

Both DLSU and ADMU were ranked in the 151200 range in English Language and Literature.

Meanwhile, DLSU was featured between the 201300 band in Education.

According to the news release, the tables are dominated by United of States higher education frontrunners Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard University, each of which claims the number one spot in 12 subjects.

UK universities come first in eight subjects, while the Netherlands,

Hong Kong and Switzerland each claim one top spot. A total of 16 universities claim at least one number one spot.

Published annually since 2011, the QS World University Rankings by Subject highlights the world’s top-performing institutions in a broad spectrum of individual academic areas.

The 2016 edition features 42 subject tables with six subjects added to the list this year--anthropology, archaeology, mining engineering, nursing, performing arts, and social policy.

A few weeks ago, on April Fool’s Day, 23 teams responded to the call of Calgary Expo and the Calgary Underground Film Festival (CUFF) to craft a short film within 48 hours. Each team was given a specific genre, prop, and quote.

And it is up to these film makers to work their way around those things creatively.

Teams shared their behind-the-scenes via Twitter with the hashtag #48houryyc. Some of the images posted are are about fast cars, vikings, swords, game boards, and exploded Macbooks. 48 hours later, only 21 teams made the cut.

These films will be screened for the first time during the first day of Calgary Expo on April 28 at Boyce Theater, Stampede Grounds at around 8:30 pm. Tickets are still available online and the audience will get the chance to vote for their favourite short film to bring home the coveted Audience Choice Award.

Super Visa – A fast way to get your Parents and Grandparents to come to Canada.

There are two (2) main ways for Permanent Residents (PRs) and Canadian Citizens to sponsor their parents or grandparents to come to Canada: Sponsor them to come as Immigrants or to sponsor them to come to Canada as Visitors under the Super Visa Program. Nowadays, according to the CIC website, it normally takes around 4 to 6 years or more to sponsor parents and grandparents in the Philippines to come as Immigrants. In contrast, Super Visa applications can get processed and approved in just a few weeks or even faster depending on how busy the Visa Office is in the Philippines.

Eligibility Requirements for parents and grandparents under the Super Visa Program: 1. Who can apply To apply for the Parent and Grandparent Super Visitor Visa, the person must: a. be the parent or grandparent of a Canadian citizen or a Permanent Resident (PR) of Canada; b. be found admissible to Canada c. provide a written commitment of financial support from his/her child or grandchild in Canada who meets a minimum income threshold (LICO). d. prove that he/she have bought Canadian medical insurance coverage for at least one year e. undergo an Immigration Medical Examination.

Canadian Visa officers will consider several factors before deciding if the person is admissible. The person must be a genuine visitor to Canada who will leave by choice at the end of the visit.

The following things would

be considered by the Visa officer prior to approving a Super Visitor Visa: the person’s ties to the home country; the purpose of the visit; the person’s family and financial situation; the overall economic and political stability of the home country; and an invitation from a Canadian or a PR host.

2. Required documents when submitting applications Persons applying for the new Super Visitor Visa must provide the following: a. A valid travel document (such as a passport). b. Two recent passport photographs of each family member. Make sure the photographs meet the Visa office photo requirements. c. The application fee unless the person is from a visa-exempt country. The fee will not be refunded, even if your application is not accepted. d. Proof that the person has enough money for his/her visit to Canada. The amount of money may vary depending on the circumstances of the visit, how long the person will stay and whether the person will stay in a hotel, or with friends or children. You can get more information from the Canadian visa office in your country or region. e. Other documents such as identification cards, proof of employment (if any), a letter of invitation from children/ relatives or friends in Canada, and a proposed travel itinerary.

In order to obtain a Parent or Grandparent Super Visitor Visa, the person also need to provide:

Evidence of the parent or grandparent relationship to the Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident (PR) you wish to visit (e.g., birth certificate, baptismal certificate or other official document naming you as parent or grandparent); Proof that your child or grandchild meets the Low Income Cut-Off (LICO) threshold; Proof that you have bought a private medical insurance valid for a minimum of one year from a Canadian insurance company that: Covers health care, hospitalization and repatriation; Provides a minimum coverage of $100,000; and Is valid for each entry to Canada and available for review by a Port of Entry officer.

3. Medical Examinations The person will be required to undergo an immigration medical examination in order to come to Canada. Instructions on completing the examination will be provided by the visa office. The person is not required to complete the examination before the submission of application forms. However, it would be a good idea to have a medical check-up before submission of the Super Visitor Visa application so that there are no surprises with regards to the person’s health condition.

4. If my income is not enough, can I have a co-signer?

Your spouse or common-law partner may help you meet the income requirement by co-signing the sponsorship application. A common-law partner is a person who is living with you in a conjugal relationship and has done so for at least one year prior to the signing of the undertaking.

The co-signer must: meet the same eligibility requirements as the sponsor; agree to co-sign the undertaking; agree to be responsible for the basic requirements of the person you want to sponsor and his or her family members for the validity period of the undertaking.

The co-signer will be equally liable, if obligations are not performed. If your co-signer is a common-law partner, you must submit the Statutory Declaration of Common-Law Union .

5. How do I calculate my family size to determine income requirements?

The size of the family determines the amount of income you need to make to sponsor.

Use the following guidelines to calculate the size of your family unit: A. Count: a. yourself, b. your spouse or common-law partner and c. dependent children, if applicable. Note: Children under the age of 19 years (single and not in a common-law relationship) who meet the definition of a dependent child must be included in the calculation, even if you as a sponsor do not have custody nor provide child support.

B. Count: a. the number of persons you are now sponsoring and b. all dependent family members of that person, whether or not they are accompanying.

C. Count the number of persons covered by other valid undertakings you have made or co-signed in the past.

D. If you have a co-signer, count all persons covered by still valid undertakings made or co-signed by your co-signer.

E. Calculate the number of persons covered in steps A to D. The total represents your family size unit.

Here are some examples.

The child or grandchild in Canada that is inviting you is not married and has no children. He or she has invited one parent to visit Canada for a two-year stay.

The family size is two.

The family in Canada inviting you is a family of four (the inviting child or grandchild, the spouse and two dependent children). They plan to host two visiting parents.

The family size is six.

The family in Canada inviting you is a family of three (child or grandchild who is inviting you, the spouse and

one dependent child). The child or grandchild inviting you previously co-signed the sponsorship of the spouse’s parents (two persons). That sponsorship is still in effect.

Now, they are inviting you and your spouse for a longterm visit on a parent and grandparent super visa. The family size is seven.

The family in Canada inviting you is a family of three (the inviting child or grandchild, the spouse and one dependent child). They plan to host you and your dependent child. The family size is five.

6. Required Income of person sponsoring a parent or grandparent: The required income is based on the number of persons in your family including the persons being sponsored. The table below shows income requirements: *TABLE 1

A: Effective January 2, 2014, the Canadian government made the Super Visa a permanent program to provide flexibility for parents and grandparents to come quickly to Canada. The Super Visa is valid for up to ten (10) years multiple-entry. The Super Visa is a Tourist Visa that allows parents and grandparents to remain in Canada up to two years at a time (renewable every 2 years). (NOTE: Parents and Grandparents can initially apply for a Super Visa and come to Canada as Tourist. Q6: If parents and grandparents are already in Canada and their Visitor Visa will expire soon, what should they do? Will they be eligible to apply for the new Super Visitor Visa from within Canada?

A: No, they cannot apply from within Canada for the new multiple-entry Super Visitor Visa. The application must processed outside Canada at a Visa office. This does not mean that the parents have to go home to their home country to apply... they just have to submit their application outside Canada while maintaining their legal status in Canada. They can also apply for an extension of their regular visitor status, of up to two years, by submitting an application to the Case Processing Centre in Vegreville, Alberta, so long as they meet all eligibility the criteria.

cillor Ray Jones spoke about what happened in Brussels is not what the Muslim faith is all about and those responsible do not represent any religion and true Muslim followers and their families have the same goals to live in harmony and care about the community they live in. All the speakers were excellent and informative information was available and the conference gave many attending to understand each other. The Theme was Love for All Hatred for None.

Heber Bartolome Senator Enverga Back Live In Calgary concerned about Physician-Assisted Dying bill

I meet Heber Bartolome of the famous Banyuhay Ni Heber band many years ago when I was a crew of Tinig Pinoy radio program and asked us to jam with him at his show in Auckland, New Zealand.

Heber Bartolome is one of the Philippines best folk singer, composer and always at the forefront of the Philippine Folk Rock music. In many major music festivals, people expect Banyuhay ni Heber as part of the array of Philippine artists.

A few years ago Heber was here in Calgary and I got to see him again and now with his band.

He used to tell me that it would have been good to have his band with him when he performs. With brothers Levi and Jessie, this was a trip he looked forward.

Times change but Heber’s music still stays in every Filipino’s heart. Tayo’y Mga Pinoy is as close to patriotic to Lupang Hinirang. It makes us very proud to be Filipino. Most of Heber’s song are part of experiences of every Filipino.

Pasahero is a song about a commuter’s daily struggle in Manila. From his Olongapo days performing in bars for US servicemen

came a song called Nena, a story of the life of a prostitute. Payag Ka Ba, has an anti-American Base sentiment. Banyuhay Ni Heber songs mostly talks about social issues but typical Filipino food is mentioned in the Almusal. Karaniwang Tao is all about the common individual. Other notables include Istambay, Paaralan, Kung Walang Pag-Ibig, Tatlong Kahig, Isang Tuka, Tumindig Ka among others.

Yes, Banyuhay Ni Heber is coming to Calgary and I hope to see them again. I hope you come too and hear their music live.

Ottawa, April 14, 2016 – Today, the Trudeau government introduced legislation in the House of Commons in response to the Supreme Court of Canada’s ruling to allow for physician-assisted dying in Canada. The Hon. Tobias C. Enverga Jr. reacted with mixed feelings after reviewing the proposed law.

“Although I maintain that assisted dying is contrary to human beings’ most profound natural inclination to live and preserve life, I am a little relieved to see that some of the recommendations of the Special Joint Committee on Physician-Assisted Dying were not followed by the government. At this early stage, without having had the opportunity to fully study the bill, there are several aspects of it that cause grave concern,” said Senator Enverga in a statement shortly after the introduction of the government’s Bill C-14, An Act

to amend the Criminal Code and to make related amendments to other Acts (medical assistance in dying).

“I would like to see an additional judicial or tribunal stage prior to a person being approved for physician-assisted dying that is independent of the two physicians or authorized nurse practitioners which are part of the proposed law to ensure that all prerequisites have been followed,” he continued. “I would also urge that the related areas of proposed further study, including access to physician-assisted dying for mature minors and those with mental illness, are not continued and that these vulnerable groups will be protected against having access to the process.”

Bill C-14 has to be passed by both the House of Commons and the Senate before it can receive Royal Assent and become part of Canada’s laws. This has to be done

by June 6, 2016, in accordance with the imposed deadline of the Supreme Court of Canada ruling.

“I want to thank all Canadians who wrote their Members of Parliament and Senators with their views and concerns about the matter. I urge you to continue to share your concerns with your representatives because the legislative process is still underway, during which we can amend the areas of specific concern.

Killing, legally or illegally, is wrong, which is why Canada ended capital punishment decades ago,” Senator Enverga concluded.

MANILA, April 19 (PNA) -- A senior Philippine diplomat was unanimously elected as chairman of a top United Nations post for the protection of migrant workers, the Department of Foreign Affairs said on Tuesday.

Former Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Jose Brillantes won as Chairman of the UN Committee on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of their Families (CMW) at committee’s 24th session in Geneva, Switzerland, the DFA said.

He will serve in the post until December 31, 2017.

Brillantes’ election, Philippine Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva Cecilia Rebong said, “is a recognition of the high priority the Philippines places on protecting the rights and promoting the welfare of Filipino migrant workers.”

“This is an honor not only to Undersecretary Brillantes but also for the Philippines,” Rebong said.

The committee, comprised of 14 independent experts, monitors the implementation of the International Convention

on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of the Their Families by its State Parties.

Every year, hundreds of Filipino workers quietly leave their poor families and homes in tears in search of better opportunities in strange foreign lands, making them vulnerable to labor abuses, physical maltreat-

ment and armed conflict in countries with ongoing civil strife.

MANILA, April 15 (PNA) -- Remittances from overseas Filipinos (OFs) registered a 9.1 percent year-on-year growth in February 2015, highest since August 2015.

Data released by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Friday showed that cash inflows in the second month this year reached USD 2.11 billion, higher than month-ago’s USD 2.02 billion and yearago’s USD 1.94 billion.

To date, cash remittances grew by 6.2 percent to USD 4.13 billion against year-ago’s USD 3.9 billion.

Remittances to the Philippines posted slower and even negative growth since the second half of

last year due in part to decline of inflows from the Middle East following the drop of oil prices to record-low levels.

In a statement, BSP Deputy Governor and officer-in-charge Diwa Guinigundo traced the strong growth of cash remittances to inflows from the United States, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Singapore, Hong Kong, the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, and Qatar.

Similarly, over-all remittances, which include in-kind transfers, “continued to draw strength from the steady rise in transfers from land-based OF workers with work contracts of

one year or more, which reached USD 3.5 billion, as well as compensation of sea-based workers and land-based workers with short-term contracts (excluding their expenditures abroad), which totaled USD 1 billion.”

Total remittances last February amounted to USD 2.33 billion, up nine percent year-on-year, bringing the two-year level to USD 4.57 billion, 6.1 percent higher compared to the USD 4.3 billion in end-February 2015.

NASA set to launch 1st PHL microsatellite to the ISS Ma. Cristina C. Arayata | PNA MANILA, March 22 (PNA) -- Diwata-1, the Philippines’ first microsatellite, will be brought to the International Space Station (ISS) at 11 p.m. of March 22, Eastern Standard Time (11 a.m., March 23, Philippine Standard Time).

National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) commercial provider Orbital ATK is set to launch its fifth mission to the ISS on March 22 (EST), and the company’s Cygnus spacecraft is scheduled to lift off on a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket at 11:05 p.m.

The Philippine Department of Science and Technology (DOST) said March 22 (EST) is a target launch date and is subject to change due to a variety of factors.

At the ISS, meanwhile, Diwata-1 will be housed in the Japanese Experiment Module (JEM), nicknamed “Kibo.” Towards the end of April, the JEM Small Satellite Orbital Deployer (J-SSOD) will release Diwata-1 into space at an altitude of 400 kilometers from the earth’s surface.

The Philippines’ first microsatellite is expected to be in orbit for approximately 18-20 months and will be imaging the country twice daily.

While still in orbit, the same Filipino research team who assembled Diwata-1 targets to launch the second microsatellite (DIWATA-2) in late 2017 or early 2018.

Diwata-1 has four cameras that would continuously take pictures of the Philippines. These

images will be used for research and in remote sensing.

Remote sensing “is a necessary technology for monitoring weather, disasters, as well as environmental issues” as described by Kohei Cho, Asian Association on Remote Sensing (AARS) general secretary.

In a previous interview with the Philippines News Agency, Cho noted that every country and every continent worldwide needs remote sensing, since environment, for instance, has no boundaries.

He added that a country needs remote sensing to have good cooperation with the international framework.

”It has been proven to be capable of monitoring El Nino, too,” said Enrico Paringit during the 36th Asian Conference on Remote Sensing (ACRS) held in the country last year.

Paringit, 36th ACRS local chair, cited that the technologies in remote sensing include satellite with high resolution camera and sensors mapping flooding areas.

“The pictures that will be taken by Diwata-1 can also be used for tourism, as we could pick an image of the day and share it with you,” said Carlos Primo David, executive director of the DOST-Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research Division (PCIEERD).

Included in the Philippine government’s budget is providing a good microsatellite data storage facility in Subic.

A ground receiving station in Subic is tasked to receive Diwata-1 imagery as well as from selected commercial satellites.

According to PCIEERD, another facility is cur-

rently being constructed -- the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman Microsatellite Research and Instructional facility which will be the hub of training for future space technology research and development activities.

About Diwata-1

In 2014, the DOST embarked on a research program to develop the necessary local expertise in space technology and allied emerging fields in science and engineering.

The flagship project of this effort is called the PhilMicrosat Program which is implemented by several departments in UP Diliman and DOST’s Advanced Science and Technology Institute (ASTI).

DOST has also partnered with two universities in Japan to develop Diwata-1.

Diwata-1 was assembled by nine young Filipino engineers who were stationed in Japan to undergo an extensive course about microsatellite. The team had almost a year to finish the assembly and testing of Diwata-1.

It weighs 50 kg and is about the size of a “balikbayan box.”

The country’s microsatellite passed the component tests, first vibration tests, post-vibration electrical tests, off-gas test and fit checking according to PCIEERD. There was a continuous functionality tests of modules and sensors and software optimization.

Last Jan. 13, DOST representatives turned over Diwata-1 to Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA).

Just recently, Calgary hosted one of the most crowd pleasing sports game at the Volleydome, which is popularly known by the volleyball aficionados as “Western Cup”. This annual volleyball sports event is sponsored and run by the popular LGBT or community called Apollo. The fabulous society are known Canada wide and they are popular in hosting and participating in big events like multi- sports, gay parade, social events and more.

2016 is my 5th year of joining this phenomenal event and I just can’t get enough.

What is volleyball anyways? It is a team sport in which two teams of six players are separated by a net. Each team tries to score points by grounding a ball on the other team’s court under organized rules. Sounds easy? Not if you’re playing in a competitive group, half my age and the average height of your opponent is 6 ft tall.

My passion for volleyball started when I was in High School. Some of my classmates were volleyball players and they encourage me to play the sport since I didn’t make it to the school choir. Yes, when one door closes, another one will open. But unfortunately, I never made the cut to become a volleyball player too. Hmmm, high school years was pretty tough for me but I didn’t stop on pursuing what I believe is my sport because I love the game already and I’m surrounded with people I know who does it.

As years go by, I developed self- confidence and I learned the skill more and more. As an athlete on my prime 15 years

ago, I was fierce, smart and very competitive on the court. In Manila, I was popularly known by my team mates, community, “tambays” and other volleyball players as Mommy Yao or Myao of San Andres.

As a Filipino volleyball player in Calgary, there’s a whole lot of Filipino volleyball players all over the world who share the same story as me. It’s the sport you can play 24/7. You sprained your ankle today, tomorrow you’re back to normal.

You skip school, your team mates becomes your family. There’s a group outing once or twice a year and if you can’t make it because “no money”, mama will be your provider, lol.. Drinking by the narrow eskinita almost everyday after the game and never ending laughter and tears are just all the precious moments in our lives as a player. Once you loved the game, it runs on your blood and forever be your passion.

I play the sport anywhere I go, from Turks and Caicos to Toronto and here in Calgary. Thanks to Facebook and and other volleyball players who gets easily connected when they are new to a place. Friends of friends messaging their friends to introduce them to their other friends, and that’s how I started. Now, most of my friends here in Calgary are volleyball players and the group is getting bigger and bigger to a point we got other groups too from Winnipeg, Edmonton, Toronto, & Vancouver who participates at Western Cup every year.

Calgary players host for housing, tour and pageant every time during the season. It’s a bag full of love, fun, drama, catchingup and “okrayan” during

the stay. All Filipino teams have contributors on all levels of the sport. Pool A are the most competitive, Pool B is competitive, and Pool C is recreational.

My team is in pool B and we won silver this year. I played outside hitter considering my height is 5’5 and my team mates were like 6’5 to 6’1, in short, I’m short. I played with full of hopes and wit and that’s the best thing within my group. We played accordingly to our skill, the taller ones used power and since I’m the shortest one, I used wit. I killed the ball by “patche patche”, or light hit, and “gilid gilid” or edge ball, and sometime “kamay ng mangkukulam”, translated as witches hand. It takes practice to get that genius artistry killing the ball into your opponents side, mostly “batikan” or thundercats as they call us who can do that.

Winter Wonderland

Johnston Canyon is very popular place for all ages due to its easy accessibility and scenic trails, even much more for ice climbers. My recent trip there on a balmy January morning - unusually for the time of year was a trip to winter wonderland. With amazing ice formations was a delight for anyone that visit this place in winter.

My goal of heading out to the mountain this time was to photograph ice formations and snowshoeing. I cannot discount that winter is my favorite time to head to the mountain to explore unusual geography only possible in the winter. This is the only time of the year where you can explore the waterfalls without having to go on the boat, swim and get wet.

Upon reaching Banff National Park, my first stop was at Lake Minniwanka to walk on the frozen lake and take in the winter scenes. I am used to seeing this great lake during the thaw season, but having to walk around the boat dock in the middle of the lake, gave me totally different vista point of the surrounding mountain range. The view from the dock was refreshing. It was peaceful being the only person around there. I came to this place many times on different time of year and under the moonlight to photograph stars and Milky Way, it never ceases to amaze me the simple beauty and serenity at any time of day.

Johnston Canyon Ice Falls I arrived at the Johnston Canyon parking lot by around 8am; I thought there wouldn’t be too many people which I was trying to avoid. Normally there are busloads of people that come to this place any time of year. To my surprise, the parking lot was half full of cars.

The trail was very icy and slippery in many sections, I was careful not to slip and fall but still a little reluctant to put on my snowshoes even though it would be safer to have them on. I managed to reach the lower falls without having them on and climb down to the falls beneath. Judging by the river of ice, my ice cleats would have came in handy.

Lower falls was stunning; I walked around and took many photos especially at the ice formations. Upon examining the features that appeared like frozen reefs or field of giant frozen mushrooms. I had to stop taking photos to spend a little bit of time admiring everything in front of me. Curiosity came upon me and examined the shape and wondered what caused it to form like cumulus clouds.

I managed to squeeze myself in a tiny space behind the falls and had a feel what it was like living in the ice age. Everything was in a frozen state, bright and clean, it was breathtaking.

By the time I got to the Upper Falls, there were many people there already.

About a dozen ice climbers can be seen scaling the ice falls all the way to the peak. I needed to get closer for a better view and see the same viewpoint of the belayer or rope handler; better still the climber at the falls.

I was having a great time and I didn’t notice the time, It was already getting late in the afternoon and the snow was starting to come down, I didn’t feel like driving back on a snow, so I had to pack up and leave at once.

I made it to my car and the snow was coming down profusely. It was time to head back until next year.

With God’s guidance, we can hope to transform our apparent failures and frustrations as opportunities for growth and maturity in the knowledge and love of God. Like Peter, we have to allow our times of failures lead us to a deeper and stronger commitment to Christ. The spirit of humility that Christ left as legacy to his followers has overtaken Peter’s leadership.

It was a crisp cold morning when I drove the route of the procession twice, finding zero parking spots. I took Macleod then settled in one spot at the Talisman centre.

From a distant, St Mary’s Cathedral was surrounded by a sea of people. No space was open in sight.

Everyone squeezed into the crowd to get a closer look at the newly blessed wooden cross.

No less than 90 percent of the attendees were Pinoy. Though it was chilly that morning, my heart was warmed by the devotion of our community to a very special occasion like this one. They

committed time to participate and express their spiritual renewal. Cross/ crucifix hanging from their clasped-hands and praying lips portrayed humanity, mortality and dependence on God. The procession was well managed and orderly, made possible by a big number of volunteers.

Christendom around the world celebrated the death of Christ. It marked the moment where the Son of God sacrificed himself for the redemption of mankind. This was also the time to reflect and reassess one’s spiritual journey.

The moment also exhibited Christianity’s unique difference from other main line religions. Jesus died on the cross then on the third day rose again. Jesus death and resurrection were disputed; however, no one

could dispute how these acts changed the lives and perspectives of millions of people around the world.

The procession lasted for almost three hours.

While waiting for the car in front of me to move on it occurred to me a common denominator that would make people come together with the sense of being equal. Good Friday celebration exemplifies man’s ability to set aside differences and be in one accord – spiritual unity.

It’s Christunity – Christian Unity in action!

I wish our community could celebrate an occasion accessible, free and open to all just like what the Way of the Cross had offered.

Siguro nga masama ang ginawa ko sa pakikipagrelasyon sa iba habang may karelasyon pa.

Dear Madame KC, Paano kung ma inlove ka sa pinsan ng partner mo? Hirap ikwento pero ganito...

Lagi kami magkachat sa FB kaya naging close kami. Umabot sa nagkwento na sya about sa mga Xrelationships nya.

Syempre advice naman me. Tapos March last year nagtapat sya na gusto nya me, nashock me kaya iniwasan ko sya.

Napansin ng partner ko na parang may problem kami ng pinsan nya.

Sabi ko na wala naman, pero ginawa ko kinausap ko yung pinsan nya na kalimutan na yung nangyari and maging magkaibigan na lang kami ulit.

Nung friends na kami ulit, lalo syang na de-

velope sa akin and at the same time parang ganon rin me. Hanggang nagkita kami sa ibang lugar para mag usap tungkol sa nangyayari, napag usapan namin na tapusin na talaga. Kaso iba yung nangyari sa amin that night, special yung nangyari. We made love kahit hindi pa me sure sa feelings ko sa kanya.

Akala ko tapos na kami, akala ko yun lang gusto nya sa akin. Hanggang sa nagkikita na kami every month, we make love, we do anything we want!

May time rin na gusto ko nang magtapat sa partner ko, kaso iniisip ko yung mangyayari and hindi ko kayang iwanan ako ng partner ko or hiwalayan ko yung pinsan nya. Sakim nga siguro

ako pero yun talaga nararamdaman ko.

May time naman na dumadating na pursigido akong humiwalay sa pinsan nya kaso gumagawa talaga ng way yung guy na magkabalikan kami. Napifeel ko talaga na mahal ako ng pinsan nya, May time na gusto na n’ya akong itakas kaso sabi ko may paa ako para makauwi kung ayaw kong sumama sa kanya.

Kung relationship naman sa partner ko, ok naman kami masasabi kong malapit na syang maging perfect husband.

Me lang talaga ang mapag hanap. Yung pinsan kasi n’ya mas angat financially, kaya nya’ng ibigay mga material na hindi kayang ibigay ng partner ko. Magaling din

s’ya pagdating sa pagpapaligaya sa akin sa kama.

Actually mas bata yung partner ko kesa sa kanya but mas magaling talaga sya.

Hindi pa kami kasal ng partner ko, 5yrs na kaming nagsasama tapos may isang anak na kami.

Yung pinsan naman n’ya matagal ng hiwalay sa asawa. Playboy, pero sabi nya nagbago na sya dahil sa akin and napifeel ko yung effort nya para mahalin ko sya ng tuluyan.

Ask ko kung what pwede kong gawin, wait ko po! Makakatulong talaga!

Masalimuot ang problema mo. Siguro naman nasa edad ka na, so alam mo kung ano ang tama at kung ano ang makakabuti sa iyo. Ang problema lang talaga eh kung desidido ka ba na gawin ang tama?

Nakahanda ka ba kung sakali man na piliin mo si pinsan tapos yung ginawa mo sa partner mo ay gagawin din ni pinsan sayo? Kung sakali man na piliin mo si partner dahil siya ang ama ng anak mo, kaya mo bang kalimutan at tigilan ang kabaliwan mo sa pinsan niya?

Ano ba talaga ang nagpapasaya sa’yo? Ang pera at magaling sa kama o yung almost perfect husband na para sayo?

I cannot judge you because love cannot be questioned. Even though you love each other but try to think it up. May anak ka at hindi naman matutumbasan ng pera at pag sisisi pag iniwan ka ng partner mo. Face the consequence and fight for your love if you’re sure enough that he’s the one.

Pray ka na bigyan ka ng lakas ng loob para itama ang mga maling nagawa mo. Remember na kung anong ginawa mo, magre-reflect sa anak mo. So if you love your kid, umayos ka.

My usual daily dose of inspiration or information to share in our social media page and groups prompted me into an instant nostalgic experience. Before I go on, let me seek the help of my good reference since grade school, Merriam-Webster to the very simple definition of the word Nostalgia:- “A pleasure and sadness that is caused by remembering something from the past and wishing that you could experience it again”.

Since the we have conceived DF’s 6th Anniversary offering, and worked few months on it, The 118th Philippine Independence became my focal point.

Where the gastronomic inspiration came about is coming across a document way back 1898. From the source: http://malacanang.gov.ph/7833-cuisine-and-the-ratification-of-independence/ page link. In there, was an infographic presentation which was put together by Clinton Palanca.

The infographics for the dinner menu was based on the sole

surviving menu card from that day, which was found in Xavier University, Cagayan de Oro, while the luncheon menu was published in Harper’s History of the War in the Philippines (1900).

The ratification of Independence Day in my Malolos, Bulacan, on September 29, 1898, sought the fine skills and talents of their times, the reputed pastry maker Juan Padilla and cook Emilio Gonzales, for such “high style” courses for a French Banquet.

In order to take you with me to that very day, in my Province Capital, I have put a 2 parts series Dinner & Lunch Menus with French (high style) & English (casual) and Filipino (budget) menu dishes. I have done a comparative dish researches on the French, its English and present/contemporary Filipino affordable dishes.

On June 12, it is my little offering for you to an opportunity, walk down memory and celebrate the birth of our Republic. I hope you’ll have fun replicating these dishes for your family, right from the comfort of your own kitchen and served patriotically at the dinner table during 118th celebration of Independence Day.
