I’ve been a teacher, a lawyer, a state senator and director of the Arkansas Department of Higher Education, but my defining moment was when I became president of UCA. I love being on a university campus surrounded by the state’s brightest students.

I value their ideas and input and I believe that we can work together to make this an even better university during its next 100 years and beyond. I hope every high school student in Arkansas takes a serious look at UCA, because this is where you can define yourself.

Campus Life:

At UCA, campus life can be about sharing pizza and a movie with friends in your residence hall or it can be about participating in one of UCA’s 100 student organizations.

UCA has on-campus housing for about 4,000 students in 12 residence halls and apartment complexes – most within easy walking distance to classes, the library, student center, cafeteria and recreational areas.

The student center is a hub of activity and home to the campus bookstore, post office, a convenience store, Java City and a food court. There are ATMs, student lounges, an information desk and the Student Government Association offices.

From taking swing dance lessons at the HPER Center to browsing the exhibits at UCA’s Baum Gallery of Fine Arts, an array of activities are available for UCA students.

Join Engage Participate Students interested in campus politics can run for office with the Student Government Association, while others may join The Bear Den to show their school spirit. For a complete list of recognized student organizations, connect to: www.uca.edu/org.

Students also have access to on-campus concerts by popular acts from Destiny’s Child to Dierks Bentley, famous guest appearances such as Napoleon Dynamite star Jon Heder and the cast from “Who’s Line Is It Anyway,” and activities ranging from laser tag to amusement park rides.

Various colleges and departments also host invited lecture series where students can learn from experts such as top government officials, business executives and accomplished authors.

I love to dance, so last spring I choreographed a hip-hop dance that my sorority performed in the annual Greek step show.

I also enjoy playing tennis and even though I’m not on the UCA team, I played intramurals last fall. I love UCA, it’s small enough that I wasn’t overwhelmed as a freshman, but it was big enough that I was able to meet a lot of new people. I’m majoring in business so I can learn the skills I’ll need to open a small clothing shop where I can sell my own line of clothing.

Performing at football and basketball games is especially fun because we get to cheer for the team when we’re not playing. I stay busy with practices, performances and other organizations I’m involved in. I love living on campus, but I still like to go home on the weekends and join my parents and sister in our family band. Music is my passion and UCA has helped me stay motivated and focused on my plans for a career in music.

Studies show that freshmen who live on campus, as a whole, attain a higher grade point average than freshmen who don’t.

On campus, there is greater access to the library, computer and study labs and greater interaction with faculty. (Freshmen are required to live on campus their first year, unless they meet one of seven exemption criteria.)

UCA’s Residential Colleges

Residential Colleges are more than just places to stay. They are co-educational living and learning communities that provide opportunities to connect to every aspect of student life. UCA offers four residential colleges: Hughes, State, Minton and Short-Denney.

Residential College students take three classes together in the fall and spring. They participate in social and civic activities together such as raising money for Heifer Project International, field trips, camping and intramural sports.

Students enrolled in residential colleges earn higher grades and are more likely to

Live and Learn in the Same Location return to college after completing their first year. Residential Colleges have a fulltime UCA faculty member living in each hall, and older students serve as mentors who assist freshmen with everything from moving in to finding tutors.

I feel fortunate to be able to teach at UCA, which is where I earned my graduate degree and where I am pursuing my doctorate in physical therapy. This is a quality institution and that’s why I want to be here. I was honored to receive the Teaching Excellence Award, but I don’t consider it just an achievement – I consider it a motivator. I stood in the capitol rotunda with reporters crowded in front of me and my friends behind me, and I gave a speech about what I believe in.

That’s when I realized that I could be a catalyst for change. The organizations I’ve been involved with and the people I’ve met as a result of attending UCA have made me who I am today.

UCA was one of the first universities in the country to become a wireless campus and offer laptop computers to its students.

When you enroll at UCA, you will have the option of leasing your own laptop computer which has wireless Internet access, allowing you to surf the Internet in your room, in class or even out on the lawn.

Students who enroll in UCA’s Laptop Initiative will be issued a laptop computer equipped with software and peripherals to meet their computing needs. Students will have the laptops in their possession year around. Participants will return their computers at the end of the two-year lease with options to enter into another two-year lease with an upgraded laptop model, purchase the computer or leave the program.

During the two-year lease agreement, students have free access to help-desk

support for technical questions, services, repairs, etc. The help desk provides a loaner/replacement program for computers that are damaged, lost or stolen. While technical problems are the responsibility of the manufacturer, the student is liable for costs associated with damage by accident or negligence.

Teams representing the University of Central Arkansas have won more conference championships than any other college division program in the state. It is a winning tradition that carries a lot of Bear pride for students, faculty, staff and alumni.

Intramural sports offer every UCA student the opportunity to participate in some type of competitive sports activity.

The university has a special facility available to students participating in intramurals or who are simply interested in working out and staying in shape. The Health, Physical Education and Recreation (HPER) Center is a 65,000-squarefoot, state-of-the-art recreation center featuring basketball courts, volleyball and badminton courts, a walk/jog track, an exercise class studio and a fitness center complete with a full slate of cardio and strength-training equipment.

I came to UCA because I immediately felt comfortable with the campus and loved the atmosphere. I’ve seen some of the people I went to high school with, but I’ve also been able to branch out and meet a lot of new people. UCA is a great place to grow as an individual. I met a lot of new people by living in a residential college and by participating in various activities.

I’m still deciding on my major, but I’m interested in mass communications.

I like knowing that I can define myself at UCA. I feel free to be me and express myself in class and outside of class.

I wanted to attend UCA because I knew it had a reputation for producing some of the best trained teachers in the state. I am one of only a handful of male students in the early childhood education program at UCA. I want to teach young children because I think I can be a positive male role model for them. My professors have been very supportive and encouraging of my career goals. Even though the university is growing, my professors still have time to nurture me as an individual. They want to make sure I succeed.

Bear Facts Days Bear Facts Days are set aside each year for prospective students to get a better feel for the campus and enjoy special activities.

All prospective students are invited and encouraged to check out UCA firsthand to meet faculty, students and staff while touring the beautiful campus. Campus tours are available at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Monday through Friday (except on Bear Facts Days) when classes are in session. Summer tours are available at 11 a.m.

Investing in your future

All qualified students are encouraged to apply for admission even if the cost may seem beyond the student’s means. UCA is committed to providing assistance to all students who demonstrate financial need.

(About 65% of UCA students receive financial aid or scholarship assistance.)

Prospective students are encouraged to work directly with the financial aid office to develop a personal financial aid package that may consist of a variety of programs - scholarships, grants, loans and part-time employment.

UCA costs are competitive with other state institutions and the university is more economical than most private schools. Listed at right is the approximate cost for an undergraduate student for the 2006-07 academic year (nine months).

I want to become an adolescent counselor because that’s where my heart is. By participating in Big Brothers/Big Sisters and serving as a resident hall advisor, I’m getting hands-on experience that is preparing me for my career. My little sister, Shelbi, is like family.

We have fun bowling, going to movies and just hanging out. Living in Bernard Hall, where I serve as a resident advisor, is great. I came back from Christmas break two weeks early just so I could spend time with the girls who didn’t get to go home.

I have always wanted to develop a good relationship with my professors, so I visit them during their office hours, especially when I need extra help with an assignment. I’ve learned as much from my professors’ attitudes and heart-to-heart talks as I have from regular classroom lessons. I want to make an impact on students, like many of the teachers I’ve encountered.

When you have a good teacher, you remember them forever.

Freshman Admission

Admission to UCA is based on a number of factors including high school GPA, ACT/SAT scores, high school curriculum and evidence of special abilities, talents or achievements.

Admission for Transfer Students

Apply yourself The following is needed before a student can be admitted to UCA: • A completed application for admission.

• Official high school transcript.

• ACT or SAT scores.

• Official transcript(s) of any college work.

• Provide proof of two immunizations against measles and rubella.

All previous college work will be evaluated to see that it meets admission requirements and to determine how many hours will transfer toward a degree program at this institution.

Send an official transcript of record from each institution of college rank attended.

For placement in freshman English and mathematics, ACT scores are required.

Students who meet the minimum cumulative grade point standard of 2.0 (“C”) or better on all work attempted at an accredited college or university and are in good standing, will be admitted.

Acceptance of credits and subsequent establishment of your standing are provisional until you have completed one semester of satisfactory work in residence at UCA. If you are transferring to the university to pursue courses leading to graduation, you will be required to earn at least 15 hours of credit in your major and nine hours of credit in your minor. Up to 60 hours may be transferred toward the degree to the university from a community college (exclusive of four activity hours of physical education).

Pre-registration Pre-registration for entering freshmen will be conducted during the summer.

Entering freshmen who have been admitted for the fall semester are notified of their pre-registration appointment by mail.

A postage-paid return card is included with the letter for students to complete and return as confirmation of this appointment. Failure to return the card cancels the appointment. Appointments may be rescheduled by calling the Office of Admissions.

Freshmen meet on a one-on-one basis with a freshman advisor to schedule their classes.

Transfer students admitted to the university will receive pre-registration information during the spring. Transfer students meet with an advisor from their major field of study.

No fees are required at the time of preregistration.
