Senior Walk is the university’s longest tradition in miles as well as years. Stories of the origin of Senior Walk vary, but the most common is that it was begun by the class of 1905. A few years later, the class of 1904 added their names on the sidewalk. Each graduating class since then has had their names engraved in the walk. In 1930, slabs were placed for all of the graduating classes prior to 1904.

Attendance Policy

• Ambassadors are allowed two (2) absences per semester. Upon the third absence, current ambassador status will be reviewed.

• Saturday tours and special tours are included. If they are missed, it will count towards the two absences.

• Just because absences are made up, it does not mean that it “disappears.” Tours are made up, to ensure that ambassadors are in good standing with the program and will be able to maintain their status as a student ambassador in the following semester (which is not a given). All absences must be made up by Dead Day!!

• Arrive 10 minutes prior to your tour time at minimum.

• If a tour will be missed for any reason, communication must go through the President (Samantha).

Whether or not she is available, an email must be sent to the Student Ambassador email account to be an excused absence.

• For no reason should an absence be relayed via telephone.

• Acceptable amount of time in order to be excused for a tour: 2 hours prior to the tour time MINIMUM, unless there is an emergency, which will be determined on a case-by-case basis.

• Ambassador meetings and training are mandatory.

INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY • If the university closes, then tours will be canceled (email notification will be sent out) • If the university is open, even in the event of inclement weather, tours will still continue, so report as normal • If tours cancel on Friday due to inclement weather, then Saturday tours will more than likely be canceled as well (email notification will be sent out to confirm this).

Code of Conduct ABSENCES Those with unexcused absences will not be eligible for any benefits of the program whether that tour has been made up or not. NOTE: You still must make up an unexcused absence in order to be in good standing for the next semester.

SPECIAL TOURS

DRESS CODE • You are required to wear khaki-colored bottoms of appropriate length, your current ambassador polo, and your nametag for every tour that you give.

Special Tours: Only sign up for special tours if you KNOW you will be able to be there. These tours are typically large and your attendance is even more important than a normal, weekly tour. If you do miss a special tour that you have signed up for, you will receive an absence for that.

CELL PHONE USAGE

• If you are in a Greek organization, you are NOT to have any letters on. This includes, but is not limited to jackets, jewelry, and flip-flops.

Cell phones should not be used in any way during your tours. No texting! If you think this is going to be an issue, leave your phone in the hangout.

• Leggings and black pants are not allowed.

THANK YOU NOTES

• If you wear sandals, make sure that they have backs (no flip flops).

After your tour, please write thank you notes to the families. There will be an example in the Hog Hangout on the appropriate way to do so.

• Your shorts should not be shorter than the length of your fingertips • Sunglasses are not to be worn.

• Nametags are mandatory. One nametag will be provided for you at the beginning of the year.

If you lose it, you will be responsible for replacing it at your own cost.

OTHER We only promote the University of Arkansas in a positive light. Negative comments are not acceptable, even if cloaked as a humorous antidote. This includes the cafeterias, bookstore, and any other experience.

Hello everyone! My name is ______________. I am a (year in school and major field of study) from (hometown). On behalf of the University of Arkansas, welcome to campus! Before we start, can each student tell me their name, where you’re from, and what you want to major in?

— Allow everyone to answer.— IF THEY ARE UNDECIDED: There are over 200 programs of study to choose from at the U of A. So for those of you who are undecided, we surely have a major that is perfect for you. If you need any help deciding, you can visit the Career Development Center on campus. Their website offers a number of resources to help students find what is important to them in career choice and what majors could lead to these careers. You can stop in and take a career assessment test to find out what your strengths are or sign up for their Career Exploration class, an eight-week course that is offered every semester.

Does anyone have another appointment?

If so, what time and place? I’ll be happy to point out where your appointment is along the way or at least give you directions at the end of the tour.

The U of A sits on over 400 acres with research facilities in various locations across the state. We have a student body of just over 26,000 including about 21,000 undergraduates. Although the university seems large, it feels like a small community.

There is a sense of pride and unity on this campus that really makes people come together. Not just through sports (although everyone loves to call those Hogs!), but throughout the entire campus. You can rest assured that you won’t just be a number here at the U of A. We just exited Silas Hunt Hall, which houses the Offices of Admissions, Financial Aid, Academic Scholarships, and the Registrar. It was named for the first black student admitted to the U of A, or any major public university in the South, when he was admitted to the School of Law without litigation. This happened in 1948, six years before racial integration in public schools was mandated by Brown vs. Topeka Board of Education.

Across the street is the Pat Walker Health Center (2004). Students pay a health fee when they register for classes that allows them office visits at the clinics at no additional charge. However, prescription medication and medical procedures, including lab work, must be paid for by the individual. To be seen by the clinic, students must make appointments. The health center focuses on three primary areas: The Medical Care Clinic – offers services such as physical exams, “family practice” medical care, acute care for illness and injury, and an orthopedic clinic. There is an x-ray center and a lab work facility on the first floor. The health center coordinates with the on-campus Walmart, which allows students to have convenient access to their medication needs. The Women’s Clinic is on the second floor and includes an all-female staff with a gynecologist and nurse practitioner.

CAPS (Counseling and Psychological Services) – focuses on mental and psychological health, providing a wide range of consultations to students, from individual counseling to group therapy. CAPS is located on the second floor and services are provided by licensed psychologists, counselors, and social workers.

Health Promotions – focuses on outreach programs to educate students on healthy living. They offer events, programs, and courses on subjects such as conflict resolution and environmental health.

Located behind the Pat Walker Health Center are the Northwest Quad, Maple Hill, Hotz Honors Hall, and Reid Hall.

Across Garland Avenue are Holcombe Hall and Futrall Hall. You will obtain more information about these residence halls during your housing tour today. You can also see Garland Parking Garage. Located at the parking garage are businesses such as Walmart, Bold Dental, First Security Bank, Enrich Salon, Subway, Belle Boutique, Lewis & Clark, and a Red Box kiosk.

The building right next to Silas Hunt is our Field House built during the great depression as part of President Roosevelt’s New Deal, Public Works Administration. On the National Register of Historic Places, it was recently renovated and rededicated as the Faulkner Performing Arts Center. The nearly 600 seat center provides music and visual arts students an innovative place to perform on campus. This former gymnasium was home to the Razorback Basketball team until the construction of Barn Hill Arena in the 1950’s.

CAMPUS TOUR, continued Along Maple Street are many of our religious organizations’ buildings and sorority houses on campus. A number of fraternity houses line Stadium Drive, but some are also on Maple Street and Arkansas Avenue. As for Greek Life, there are currently fourteen sororities and nineteen fraternities on campus. Approximately 1 in 4 students on the U of A campus are Greek.

During the 2012-2013 Academic Year, U of A Greeks donated over 24,000 hours of community service and over $560,000 to charities. Aside from community involvement, the U of A Greeks promote academic achievement. The average GPA of our Greeks is above 3.24. If you are interested in Greek Life, please visit uagreeks.uark.edu for further information.

There are over 380 Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) on campus. These organizations can be categorized as cultural, professional, religious, or special interest. For a complete list of RSOs please visit studentinvolvement.uark.edu. If, for some reason, there isn’t already an RSO for your particular interest, you can start your own with six members and a faculty or staff advisor.

The Union Mall is the outdoor area between the Arkansas Union and Mullins Library. There is always something going on out here, whether it is Welcome Week, fraternity and sorority events, carnivals during finals week, LARPing on Friday afternoons, or sitting down for a relaxing break in the middle of campus.

— Continue walking alongside Mullins Library, turn right at the columns, and enter the library, circling the General Access Computer Lab — Mullins Library is named after the former U of A President David W. Mullins. The building was constructed in 1969 and was completely renovated in 1997. Mullins is the second largest library in the state of Arkansas. It was the largest until President Clinton built his library in Little Rock. Mullins Library houses a Performing Arts & Media Department with facilities for viewing films and listening to recordings, and a Special Collections Department, which contains rare books and manuscripts.

A couple of these collections include the official records of the Arkansas Territory and the diary of E. Wilson (a solider from WWII) who shares his accounts of the war.

There are several study rooms you can reserve with your student ID card. Online databases are available as well, and if you get stuck, reference librarians are there to help! You can also send your questions by email or chat 24/7 with a librarian. You can conveniently check out a laptop and connect to the internet anywhere in the library utilizing the wireless connection.

For other studying needs, there is a silent reading room as well as desks and tables located throughout the building. There are also art exhibits to view on the lobby level that change periodically. As we walk through the lobby, you will see one of our General Access Computer Labs, and all of the computers are hooked up to several printers. On-campus printing is included in your student fees.

Interlibrary Loan is also available. This program allows you to check out materials located at another university. Once a student requests particular materials, Interlibrary Loan will have them shipped here for the student to check out just like any other materials in the library. When the student returns the materials, they will be shipped back to their home institution.

CAMPUS TOUR, continued Vol Walker Hall is home to the Fay Jones School of Architecture, which offers five degrees to students in three disciplines: architecture, landscape architecture, and interior design. This building recently underwent a renovation that added more than 34,000 square feet to the building. Additions to this building include a new lecture hall, a green roof, an exhibition gallery, a student lounge area, and several design studios. The addition is covered in more than 400 panels made from Indiana limestone. The western side features a wall of glass with a system of glass fins that helps to reduce glare and heat from the western sun. A new tableau bench rests in the central corridor of the main floor of Vol Walker Hall. It was made from two red oak trees that once stood on the site and were removed for construction. The trunks were cut into twenty-sixfoot long boards. Fletcher Cox, an artist from Jackson, Mississippi, created the bench, which is five and a half feet wide and weighs more than one ton. The bottom level of Vol Walker Hall features the school’s media center, the woodworking shop, and the visualization lab, where students use 3-D printers, laser cutters and computer-controlled routers to create their designs. Students in the Jones School of Architecture are required to study abroad as part of their curriculum, visiting either Mexico City or Rome.

Speaking of studying abroad, The Office of Study Abroad is actually a house, located near the corner of Maple Street and Arkansas Avenue. Last year, the University of Arkansas sent over eight hundred students to study in forty-eight different countries. The five cherry trees lining the north side of Ozark Hall were a gift from the Japanese government to the U of A in commemoration of our international educational exchange activities. The university hosts over 1,400 international students and scholars from 116 countries. We have study abroad programs worldwide, where students from almost any major can study during the summer, for a semester, or even a full academic year. You really should check out the Study Abroad website and start thinking about how to make that happen while you study here.

— Stop in front of the statue Courage to Lead — This bronze statue was a gift to the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences in 2003 and is entitled Courage to Lead.

Denny Haskew was the sculptor and a member of the Potawatomi Indian Tribe. Haskew depicts three Native Americans preparing to enter battle. In this traditional ceremony, they shoot arrows into the sky and remain still as the shafts fall back to the earth. It symbolizes courage and belief in spiritual protection.

The four buildings on your left are part of the Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences. There is the main Agriculture Building, the Agriculture Annex, the Plant Science Building, and the Home Economics Building. This college offers thirteen diverse majors. Graduates from the Bumpers College go on to careers in pharmaceutical sales, dietetics, horticulture, law, and environmental policy making to name a few. The largest program in the college is Apparel Merchandising and Product Development. Students in this program have completed internships with Disney, Gucci, Nordstrom’s, and the Consumer Testing Lab. — Walk and stop in front of the Pi Beta Phi Centennial Gate — To your left is the Pi Beta Phi Centennial Gate (2012). Dedicated on September 21, 2012, it stands thirty feet tall and extends 120 feet. The gate commemorates Pi Beta Phi sorority’s 100-year anniversary on campus and their long-time involvement with the University of Arkansas.

— Begin walking toward Old Main Lawn on the north side of Old Main. To your left is the School of Social Work —

CAMPUS TOUR, continued This is the School of Social Work, which has offered a baccalaureate degree in social work since 1940, making it one of the oldest undergraduate social work programs in the United States. The baccalaureate and graduate social work programs are accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).

This is Memorial Hall and next to it is Peabody Hall. Memorial Hall is home to the Air Force Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC), the Psychology Department, the Psychological Clinic, and the African & African American Studies Program.

The Air Force and Army ROTC train students to become future leaders of the United States military. The most significant honor of the program is that five graduates have received the nation’s highest military decoration: the Congressional Medal of Honor.

Peabody Hall was originally, and remains, the home of the teacher-education program at the University of Arkansas.

Peabody Hall was built in 1913 and once housed Peabody Elementary School and University High School where our teacher-education students gained practical experience teaching in those classrooms. One of our most famous Arkansans, J. William Fulbright, attended Peabody Elementary, graduated from University High School, and stayed on campus after graduation to attend the U of A. Peabody Hall underwent an $8.8 million renovation in 2011, maintaining its role as an integral element of the university’s mission in the future. Peabody’s classrooms now feature the latest technology available in the field of education in addition to a “historical classroom” that resembles what a classroom looked like in the early 1900s. It also has a coffee shop called Peabody Perks that serves coffee, sandwiches, pastries, and soup.

The Graduate Education Building houses faculty offices as well as classrooms. It is the home of the College of Education and Health Professions. Our education degree offers two tracks that lead to elementary licensure. One is a five-year program, which leads to licensure upon completion of a bachelor’s degree and the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT). The other is a four-year program where students can be licensed after the bachelor’s degree. Both tracks feature a year-long teaching internship at the end of the program.

— Take a right up the sidewalk toward Old Main. — Carnall Hall, opened in 1906, was originally a women’s dormitory. It was strategically placed on the extreme northeast corner of the campus to comply with the strict separation of sexes on college campuses, which was standard until the late twentieth century. In the sixties and seventies, the hall saw several new inhabitants, including the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity and the Departments of Anthropology, Geography, and Sociology. Unfortunately, it was abandoned in 1991, and by the late 1990s had become a candidate for demolition. Thankfully, local citizens, led by Paula Marinoni, and former residents of the residence hall fought to save the building and find a new use for the refurbished structure. The board approved a $6.9 million project to become the Inn at Carnall Hall in 2001. The Inn at Carnall Hall and Ella’s Restaurant now serve as a 50-room historic inn and five-star restaurant. Since opening that fall, the Inn has been the home-away-from-home for parents of U of A students and alumni of the university. Notable dignitaries and celebrities who have stayed at the Inn at Carnall Hall include Robert Redford, President Bill Clinton, and His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama.

This is Old Main, the oldest building on campus and a symbol of the University. It has housed nearly every department on campus at one time or another and now holds classrooms and the Departments of History, Anthropology, Sociology, Criminal Justice, and Philosophy. Also housed here is the Dean’s Office for the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and

CAMPUS TOUR, continued Sciences, as well as the Fulbright College Advising Center. When it was built in the 1870’s, it was called University Hall and the plans were actually a copy of the architect John Mills Van Osdell’s University Hall on the University of Illinois campus.

However, that building no longer exists.

Posted in front of Old Main is the information about how the university began. The University of Arkansas is both the major land-grant institution for Arkansas and the flagship state university. The Morrill Land-Grant College Act of 1862 used federal land sales to provide funding for new colleges devoted to “agriculture and the mechanic arts” and “scientific and classical studies.” The university’s founding satisfied the provision in the Arkansas Constitution of 1868 that the General Assembly “establish and maintain a State University.” Citizens of Fayetteville and surrounding Washington County raised $130,000 to secure the university’s status.

In the original plans, the south tower was supposed to be larger than the north tower. However, (pointing to the towers), it is exactly the opposite. Legend says that the builders of the north tower were ex-Yankees who raised it as a symbolic gesture of the North’s victory over the South in the Civil War. However, there’s another reason that makes a little more sense: The smaller tower (designed to hold a clock) was switched from the north to the south to better be seen by the townspeople in Fayetteville Square.

After more than 130 years without a clock, the south tower was given one through the Campaign for the Twenty-First Century. This campaign raised more than $1 billion between 1998 and 2005.

In 1949, memorial bells were placed in the north tower. The north tower bells, cast in 1879, are replicas of the ones in London’s Westminster Abbey, weighing 1000 pounds each and were dedicated to all sons and daughters of the university who served in any way. The ringing of the bells weakened the building structure, and they were last rung for the bicentennial.

Today, an electric bell system has been placed in Old Main, which strikes every hour and plays the Alma Mater at 5:00 pm daily. The bells cannot be heard within the building.

Many of the original building materials for Old Main were found locally. The lumber came here in wagons pulled by oxen from the War Eagle Mill area in Benton County. The bricks were made from nearby clay and fired in on-site kilns. The sandstone used for the foundation was quarried right here on campus.

Old Main was used until 1981, when it was closed for safety reasons. Thanks to many contributions by alumni and friends of the U of A, Old Main’s refurbishing began in 1985 and was completed in 1991.

The original stairway was completely made of wood--black walnut to be exact. Unfortunately, in 1949, fire safety laws required that it be replaced with the second stairway of steel and concrete. The walnut handrails were cut up into bookends and sold as souvenirs.

— Point to Spoofer’s Stone. — Just over there is Spoofer’s Stone, an original piece of building material that was left behind. During construction, as the limestone for the building was being transported to the site, one of the oxcarts broke, dumping a large, broken block of

CAMPUS TOUR, continued limestone on the lawn. Once construction was completed and the debris was cleared, the broken stone was left there. It immediately became a popular spot for students on campus. In the 1920’s it was a rendezvous for lovers because there was no visitation allowed in the residence halls at the time. Courting couples would leave notes in the crack of the stone. It has become a particularly romantic spot over the years where many couples have gotten engaged. It was originally much larger, but couples would chip off parts of it as a souvenir. To preserve the stone for everyone to enjoy, it has now become illegal to do so.

The front lawn of Old Main is the Old Main Arboretum. Its original use was a training ground for military officers when military tactics were taught at the university. There are over seventy tree species that native to the state of Arkansas growing on the front lawn. Today, Old Main Lawn provides space for many outdoor activities including Frisbee, soccer, hammocking, and picnicking. In fact, on a really nice day, you will see professors taking their entire classes out here to lecture outdoors.

The names of the first graduating classes are listed in front of Old Main on Senior Walk. The U of A is one of the few universities in the nation that still honors its graduates in this manner. There have been different accounts of how Senior Walk began. The most common is that the class of 1905 began it. A few years later, the class of 1904 added their names to the sidewalk and so forth. You may notice that there is no indication of an 1887 or 1895 graduating class. In 1887 (when there were only around 300 students enrolled in the University), there were no degrees given out. In 1895, the school readjusted their record keeping, so the graduating class of 1895 is accounted for in either the 1894 or 1896 engraved names. Originally the names were stamped by hand, but that changed in 1986 when University Physical Plant employees invented the Sand Hog, a machine designed specifically for the purpose of etching the names in Senior Walk. Senior Walk now stretches over five miles and contains the names of more than 150,000 graduates.

— Take them through Old Main. Show them a classroom. Now would be a good time to discuss class size and the student to faculty ratio (19:1) (6:1 for the Honors College). Point out one of the bulletin boards and let them pick up a Traveler newspaper. — — Walking through Old Main… — During the early years, wood-burning stoves heated the individual rooms and stovepipes could be seen sticking out the tops of the windows. Oil lamps lighted the hallways, and the rooms that were not being used for classrooms were sometimes rented to faculty members. Also, up until the late 1960’s, a tradition was held that freshmen could not enter the front doors of the building if the football team lost the homecoming game.

— Exit Old Main through the West doors. — The sculpture entitled J. William Fulbright, along with the Fulbright Peace Fountain, and the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, is dedicated to the Memory of J. William Fulbright, who was president of the university from 1939-1941.

He served in both houses of the United States Congress and was the Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

In 1945, Senator Fulbright introduced a bill that called for the funding of the “promotion of international good will through the exchange of students in the fields of education, culture, and science. This legislation led to Congress’ creation of the Fulbright Program the following year. The Fulbright U.S. Student Program is the largest educational exchange program in the United States. It currently gives around 1,900 students and young professionals annually the opportunity to teach or study

CAMPUS TOUR, continued in more than 140 countries worldwide. Since its inception, the Fulbright Program has given more than 300,000 recipients the chance to work or study in over 155 countries. This sculpture was created by artist Gretta Bader, who wanted to capture the intense yet approachable Fulbright in his sixties, which were said to be his finest and most courageous years. The Fulbright College is the largest college on campus with over thirty majors divided into the four major liberal arts areas: arts, humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences.

The Fulbright Peace Fountain was designed by E. Fay Jones, the former Dean of Architecture and a University of Arkansas graduate, and Maurice Jennings. Students often gather in this area between classes to talk or just relax. Most students schedule classes only fifteen minutes apart, and although it sounds like a short amount of time, it’s relatively easy to get from one building to another in that time frame.

— Walking towards Bell Engineering…— To your right is the Chemistry Building, which was completed in 1935 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The building underwent an $18 million renovation and reopened in January 2007. Much of the original structure was preserved.

The rest was replaced with energy conservation efforts in mind, the most significant being the installation of energy wheels on the roof to recover energy from the conditioned air before releasing it to the outside. The building features offices, classrooms and research laboratories. Today the building serves as an example for contemporary restoration of historic architecture.

But the Chemistry Building isn’t the only example of sustainability we have on this campus. LEED is an architectural rating system to recognize Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. Every new construction project at the U of A is LEED certified, and our university is pushing to become carbon neutral by 2040. We are one of eight SEC schools heading in this direction. Examples of sustainability on our campus include solar hot water heaters on the HPER, bike fix stations, and a free ChargePoint electric vehicle charging station at the Garland Avenue Parking Garage.

Directly to your left is Ozark Hall, which houses the Department of Geosciences, the Graduate School and International Studies, and a newly renovated 21,000 square foot wing that houses the Honors College. As an honors student, you are given hands-on research opportunities, priority registration, honors courses, and access to special housing. The Honors College was established in 2002, with a large portion of a landmark $300 million gift to the university from the Walton Family Charitable Support Foundation. Thanks to the endowment established by the Walton gift, the Honors College awards up to 90 freshman fellowships each year, worth $50,000-$70,000 over four years. It also awards from $600,000 to $1 million in study abroad and research grants to honors students each year. Many Honors College graduates have gone on to graduate school at Harvard, Yale, Cornell, Columbia, Stanford, Chicago, and Vanderbilt. On average the Honors College has a 90% acceptance rate for its students into medical school, much higher than the typical national average of around 50%. Many honors students also win nationally competitive awards like the Goldwater, Truman, NSF, Fulbright, Marshall, and Rhodes Scholarships. For the Goldwater Scholarship, the University of Arkansas is ranked 1st in the SEC, 15th among public universities, and 29th among all universities, both public and private, in the nation. We are tied for 1st in the SEC with the University of Georgia for our number of Truman Scholarship winners, and we were recognized as a Truman Scholarship Honor Institution for our continued success with this award. Our ten Rhodes Scholars place us at 38th in the nation among all public institutions. During the 2013-14 academic year, University of Arkansas students won more than $2.7 million in competitive scholarships and fellowships at the state and national level.

CAMPUS TOUR, continued This is the Bell Engineering Center, which was completed and opened for classes in 1987. It was named in honor of Melvin Bell, an Arkansas businessman who donated $8 million to the College of Engineering. It is also home to the College of Engineering, which is the only comprehensive engineering program in the state of Arkansas. The college is home to around 3,000 undergraduate students and nine undergraduate degree programs. Research is conducted in fields such as robotics, calibration, and laser optics. The Regional Radiation Calibration Laboratory here is one of only two in the nation capable of calculating gamma and neutron calibrations. Every year, students compete in Solar Splash, an international collegiate competition in which students, with the help of their professors, research, design, and develop solar-powered boats.

— Walk towards the Greek Theatre. — Ferritor Hall is to your left and houses research facilities for upperclassmen and graduate science students. Behind that is the Science and Engineering Building. It houses classrooms as well as the Department of Mathematics.

To your left is Hillside Auditorium. Its design houses a two tier auditorium system, in which one holds 275 students and the other seats 500 students. Hillside Auditorium hosts large lecture classes, such as General Sociology, General Psychology, Univeristy Chemistry, and General Biology, as well as many others. I should mention that the Enhanced Learning Center offers tutoring and S.I. sessions to students who are enrolled in these large classes to make sure they are getting the individual attention that they need.

The Chemistry and Biochemistry Research Building is used entirely for research, while Discovery Hall has laboratories for undergraduate biology and chemistry courses.

— As you’re walking… — Just on the other side of the street is the Harmon Avenue Parking Garage. It has over 2000 parking spaces. Permit parking and hourly parking are available with pay stations located on the first and sixth floors of the building. There is also photo processing, shipping, dry cleaning, a convenience store, and coffee and pastries available on the sixth floor. You can even take your passport picture!

You can also see Champions Hall across the street. Champions Hall is our newest classroom building on campus. The building, which was partly built with money from the University of Arkansas athletics department, will contains math and science laboratories as well as general classroom space that will be used by students in every college on campus.

— Stop in front of the Greek Theatre. — The Chi Omega Greek Theatre was built in 1927 by Chi Omega Fraternity (Sorority) whose founding chapter is here at the U of A (begun in 1895). This was the first instance in history that a national fraternity or sorority presented a memorial to the institution where it was founded. It is almost an exact replica of the theatre built to Dionysus at the foot of the Acropolis in Athens, Greece. It is built to the same scale, but not the same size, as the theatre in Athens. Seating capacity is almost 3,000.

In the fall, pep rallies are held here. Events sponsored by University Programs are also brought to the theatre and, during warmer weather; you will often see students enjoying the sun or small classes here.

CAMPUS TOUR, continued That is the J.B. Hunt Center for Academic Excellence. This building serves multiple colleges including the Fulbright College, the Walton College, and the College of Engineering. An estimated 7,000 students are served daily through the multitude of classrooms and facilities it provides. In addition, the design was structured to include high floors and moveable walls to cater to research and technical needs. As well, the center has multiple conference rooms and seating areas along with a coffee shop to provide maximum collaboration between different departments.

— Standing in front of Kimpel Hall — Kimpel Hall is named after prominent U of A English professor Ben “Drew” Kimpel. It houses the Departments of English, World Languages, Literatures, & Cultures, Theatre, Communication, and the Walter J. Lemke Department of Journalism.

Kimpel houses the offices of the Arkansas Traveler, UATV, and the yearbook. It also has the Quality Writing Center. The QWC offers tutoring for writing in all disciplines and at all stages of the writing process. You will work collaboratively with trained tutors to improve not only individual assignments, but also general writing and organizational habits that will make you a better writer in the future.

— Move towards the Sam M. Walton College of Business — The Sam M. Walton College of Business is housed in this building, which was built in 1978. The Walton College is ranked in the top 30 among all public undergraduate business programs in the nation (out of about 450). In 2013, BusinessWeek ranked it #11 among public business schools for return on investment. In 1998, the Walton College received a $50 million gift from the family of the late Sam Walton. This gift still ranks as the largest upfront cash gift made to an American business school and it enabled the college to greatly enhance its academic programs and classroom technology. The college offers nine undergraduate programs: Accounting, Economics, Finance, General Business, Information System, Management, Marketing, Retail, and Supply Chain Management. The Walton College curriculum is application-based, allowing students the opportunity to participate in experiential courses including a student run business called S.A.K.E. (Students Acquiring Knowledge through Enterprise), two fund management courses with portfolios valued at a total of $6 million, and numerous other hands-on classes. They also have the chance to meet business executives from the surrounding community on a regular basis. The Walton College has its own fully staffed Career Development Center which works with business majors on topics ranging from résumé building to internships to salary negotiation. In 2013, 85% of job-seeking Walton College students were employed with average salaries of approximately $50,000 upon graduation.

Willard J. Walker Hall is directly behind this building. It houses the Graduate School of Business. To support the college’s finance classes in actual stock market trading, the Trading Center was created on the third floor. It mirrors a real trading center. There is a portfolio management class that is offered (by application only) to senior Finance and Investments majors in which they are responsible for managing the Walton College portfolio valued at more than $1 million dollars.

— Turn to face Yocum and Humphreys — Yocum and Humphreys Halls were both built in the 1960s. Both sister residence halls are traditional style and are co-ed.

Until the summer of 2012, Humphreys was the only residence hall on campus that did not have air conditioning, but it was equipped with heat for the winter months. Humphrey’s and Yocum are two of our most popular residence halls on campus because of their central location and community feel.

CAMPUS TOUR, continued “Yocum was originally a men’s residence hall and Humphreys was a women’s residence hall. It’s said that the U of A asked if they would prefer air conditioning or telephones. The men chose air conditioning and the women chose phones. In the eighties, phone lines were added to Yocum, but Humphreys was unable to receive a/c.”

Founders Hall is the newest residence hall on campus. Sitting six stories high, it provides 214 more beds on campus. On the bottom level is Papa Johns, Chef Jet, and Slim Chickens, and on the second floor are 260 additional seats for Brough Commons. Each room features two beds, two wardrobes, two chests of drawers, two desks, a sink, and a vanity. The bathrooms are more private as well, just like at Hotz. Sink space remains communal, but each shower and toilet are behind a lockable door. Founders is LEED-certified. Founders Hall scores highly in the areas of materials and resources, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, sustainable sites, and indoor environmental quality.

— Stand in the outlook area by Humphreys and Brough where you can see the intramural fields. — I’m going to point out a few things that you will be unable to actually visit on your tour. Bud Walton Arena (1994) is home to the Razorback basketball team, holds about 20,000 fans, and sits next to Pomfret Hall. Pomfret houses nearly 800 residents. There is also a classroom, a music room, a branch of the Enhanced Learning Center, and a dining hall within the building. Across from Bud Walton Arena are the Intramural Fields. Intramural sports on our campus include flag football, tennis, sand volleyball, badminton, horseshoes, Xbox tournaments, bowling, dodge ball, and more. Most of the outdoor sports compete at the Intramural Fields. They are divided into three leagues of play: Men’s, Women’s, and Co-Recreational.

Also down the hill are the HPER (Health, Physical Education, and Recreation), the John McDonnell Field for outdoor track and field events, Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium, and Barnhill Arena. The HPER includes four basketball courts, an indoor track, a swimming pool, the Outdoor Connection Center, intramurals and club sports, an indoor rock climbing wall, a bouldering wall, and a fitness center. Razorback Stadium became Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium in 2001 after a $110 million expansion. The stadium holds approximately 72,000 people. To gain entry to games, students can buy the Student Access Pass. For $85, students are afforded tickets to all football and basketball games. For $15 extra, students can purchase membership into the Collegiate Razorback Foundation. The Collegiate Membership enhances the access pass by providing an exclusive event with Coach Bret Bielema, a private practice with Coach Mike Anderson, invitations to special events, a Razorback Foundation rewards packet, early admission to select events and priority ticket access for the Southwest Classic football game in Dallas and bowl game seating (only available to Razorback Access Pass holders) and more. Barnhill Arena is home to women’s gymnastics and basketball, and it also hosts distinguished lecturers such as President George H.W. Bush, Jane Goodall, and Bill Nye the Science Guy. — Begin walking to the corner by Brough, Gregson, and Gibson. — Brough Commons is the largest cafeteria on campus. Club Red is located below Brough. Here, you can use your “flex” dollars (included in most meal plans) to purchase snacks. Along with Club Red we have a Starbucks and Quiznos where you can also use flex dollars. Gregson Hall (1948) is a co-ed residence, upper division hall. The Enhanced Learning Center is located in the basement of Gregson. The ELC houses a large computer lab, study room, and tutoring services. Tutoring is included in your student fees and available for almost any subject. The ELC also includes a branch of the Quality Writing Center Gibson Hall is a women’s residence hall which houses 106 students. It was formerly the men’s athletic hall known as Razorback Hall, until it was renamed and dedicated in memory of past director for housing, James Gibson.

CAMPUS TOUR, continued — Walk in front of the band building. — Lewis E. Epley Jr. Hall is the band building and houses a large practice room as well as many smaller practice rooms for individual sessions. The Razorback Marching Band, one of the oldest collegiate bands in the US, was formed in 1874 as the Cadet Corps Band as part of the military department. In 1947, the Cadet Corp was divided into three bands: football, concert, and ROTC. In 2006, the Razorback Marching Band was awarded the highest honor bestowed on a college marching band, the Sudler Trophy. Students do not have to be music majors to participate in the bands or receive a band scholarship.

The Fine Arts Center houses the Art Department, an art gallery, a library, art studios, classrooms, and the University Theatre. This building was designed by Fayetteville native Edward Durrell Stone, who also designed the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, and the former Busch Stadium in St. Louis.

Razorback Transit drives all over Northwest Arkansas and is free to everyone. They even go to Walmart and the Northwest Arkansas Mall. The Garland Transit Facility is the main bus stop for buses on the top of the Hill. This may also be a good time to answer any questions about the parking system. Work to shed a positive light on the often-difficult parking on campus.

— Continue under the catwalk into the Union and proceed down the stairs to the UREC Fitness Center — The Arkansas Student Union was completed in 1973. In 1998, the east half of the union was added on.

The UREC Fitness Center is a new addition to the Student Union. This satellite fitness center is closer in proximity to student residence halls and classes, allowing for easier access for students on the hill. This 10,500 square foot facility offers 56 cardio machines, 10 cable stations, a free weight area, a stretching area, and men’s and women’s locker and shower facilities.

— Proceed up the stairs to the Student Technology Center — The Student Technology Center opened in the spring of 2012. Students have access to a new state-of-the-art tech lounge, digital media lab, gaming studio, and equipment checkout. This is offered to students at no extra charge, enabling them to access all technology needs in one place.

— From here, proceed up the stairs to the Connections Lounge — The enclosed area where we now stand is called the Connections Lounge where various groups on campus host many activities. The union houses the Career Development Center, RSO offices, Associated Student Government, Off-Campus Connections, the Verizon Ballroom, and other meeting rooms. The fourth floor has a free movie theater, the Anne Kittrell Art Gallery, the Multicultural Center, and the student ID card office. Just past the Connections Lounge you will find Au Bon Pain, Freshens, Club Red, and a General Access Computer Lab. We also have a post office, a barbershop, and a florist! On the second floor are the Offices of Student Accounts and the Treasurer. The Union Food Market has Chick-Fil-A, Burger King, sub sandwiches, sushi, pizza, etc. (EXPLAIN LATE NIGHT) I hope that I have been able to answer your questions. If you need any directions, I’ll be happy to give them to you now.

Housing Tour 2014-2015 INTRODUCTION — Just outside Silas Hunt Hall, North Side) — Hello everyone! My name is _____. I am a (year in school and major field of study) from (hometown).

— Cross the Maple intersection on the Law School side (east) and head around towards the front doors of Futrall Hall. As you pass by, you can point out the University House building that houses our University Development Offices. Also feel free to point out the Porcellino statue replica from Florence, Italy. It’s said to bring you good luck if you rub the boar’s bronze nose.— This is Futrall Hall. It was renovated in the summer of 2009 and houses approximately 193 co-ed students. Named for Mrs. Annie D. Futrall, the hall opened in 1963. Mrs. Futrall was the wife of former University President Dr. John C. Futrall.

Mrs. Futrall was very visible to the campus and its visitors as a hostess at university functions for 26 years. Futrall Hall was renovated in 2009. Renovations included new furniture, new flooring, refurbished bathrooms and lounges, and also a 16seat theatre with a 46” flat-screen television. Desk and mail services are provided for Futrall residents right across the street at the Northwest Quad.

— Show the common room and proceed towards the show room.— Futrall Hall is a community style residence hall and each room will be shared by 2 students. Futrall has movable furniture so that the room layout is somewhat customizable. You can have microwaves, mini- refrigerators, and televisions. The only pets allowed are small, harmless fish. Candles, toaster ovens, toasters, hot plates, and space heaters are not allowed. Answer any questions about housing and student life. If you’ll follow me downstairs to the common area, I’ll show you one of the amenities students like to take advantage of. Show the basement level laundry room, common area, and exit out the back basement door towards the crosswalk on Garland Ave. — Walk into the NWQ to the dining hall. — This is the Northwest Quad (2004). It is an education-focused, suite-style residence hall. It houses approximately 602 students along with staff, faculty in residence, and 15 Resident Assistants (RAs). Students live in a two-, three-, or fourbedroom suite, with each student having his or her own bedroom, complete with restrooms and a living area. The NWQ is a co-ed living facility. In addition, the Northwest Quad houses the office of a Counselor in Residence, the Roberta Fulbright Dining Hall, a branch of the Enhanced Learning Center, three classrooms, a music room, study rooms, meeting facilities, and a General Access Computer Lab. — Stop at the dining hall.— This is the Roberta Fulbright Dining Hall, which is one of the three dining halls on campus. When you purchase your meal plan, you get a certain number of flex dollars as well. These flex dollars can be used at convenience stores around campus and also at the Union Food Court during the day. After 5 pm, you can eat at the Union Food Court or The Hill using the Late Night feature of your meal plan. Answer any questions about meal plans at this time.

— Feel free to point out that if any families would rather not continue to see Maple Hill suite-style, you are right near the Garland Garage and University of Arkansas Bookstore.— — Walk to Maple Hill East.— — As the Epley Center for Health Professions become visible— Epley Center for Health Professions is one of the newest additions to the College of Education and Health Professions. The Epley Center houses the Eleanor Mann School of Nursing and the University of Arkansas Speech and Hearing Clinic.

Maple Hill (2007) is a housing option for freshmen and sophomores. It is made up of three separate buildings: Maple Hill East, West, and South. They house approximately 1097 students, classrooms, academic advising for students in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, conference rooms, quiet study areas, and a large fireplace lounge. Maple Hill is also the only residence hall on campus to feature an enclosed courtyard with a multipurpose stage and sound equipment.

Maple Hill offers a wide variety of room choices to its residents, which include four-person two-bedroom suites, three person super suites, and four-person two-bedroom lofts. All of their super suites and lofts have leather furniture. Each room has cable and Ethernet connections and the entire facility features wireless internet access. Maple Hill South also houses a diner, “THE HILL,” and a Club Red located on the first floor. There’s also a coffee shop called “Pura Vida” and a “Freshens” which serves frozen yogurt treats as well as smoothies.

Next to Maple Hill is Reid Hall (1966) is a primarily freshman, women’s hall that was refurbished and opened in 2007.

It houses approximately 450 women with 16 Resident Assistants (two per floor). Reid also has two RESPECT interns who serve as educators for issues dealing with sexual assault and relationship violence. A University Police substation is connected to Reid with a law enforcement staff available 24/7 to students on this side of campus.

— Show Maple Hill East showroom.— This is a one-bedroom room in Maple Hill sleeping two students. There are many different layouts in this residence hall. Most have two bedrooms, a small living area, and a bathroom for four people. As with Futrall, you can have microwaves, minirefrigerators, and televisions. The only pets allowed are small, harmless fish. Candles, toaster ovens, toasters, hot plates, and space heaters are not allowed.

— Answer any questions about residence hall life.— — Walk to Garland Avenue Parking Garage.— To your left is Hotz Hall. Hotz Hall provides honors quarters for first-year Honors College students. Freshman Honors College students must come to college with a 3.5 GPA to be eligible for housing in this residence hall. Bonded roommates who are not admitted to the Honors College must also have a 3.5 cumulative GPA to qualify for Hotz Hall. Traditional twoperson rooms foster community among students, and the main floor provides a large space where residents can gather to

HOUSING TOUR, continued play ping-pong and pool, watch movies, and read near the fireplace. A computer lounge, music room, conference rooms, and a small theater are available for use as well. Each floor offers study areas, alcoves for secluded TV viewing and video gaming, and spa-style bathrooms with multiple shower facilities that have been reconfigured for greater privacy.

— Stop in front of the Garland parking garage— In the Garland Avenue Parking Garage, we have the computer store, the general book department, the textbook department, the Razorback Shop, Office Max, the Clinique counter, and a coffee shop. Also included are: - Papyrus cards - Nike - Jones & Mitchell - Russell Athletics apparel - A technology store featuring Apple, Dell, HP and other educational discounted products - An OfficeMax school supply store Additionally, the Garland Center features 20,000 square feet of private retail shops, providing a wide range of merchandise and services to serve the campus community. These stores include: Walmart on Campus, which is 2% of the size of a WalMart Supercenter and has a full service pharmacy, Subway, First Security Bank, Bold Dental, Belle Boutique, Enrich Salon, and Lewis and Clark.

Alma Mater In 1909, Brodie Payne, an alumnus of the University of Arkansas, submitted his song to an ongoing competition to find a University song and won first prize. Henry D. Tovey, who was the director of the Glee Club at that time, set the song to music. In 1931, the University College Song Association in New York reviewed a collection of 500 college tunes, and the U of A Alma Mater was judged to be one of the 25 best college songs in the United States.
