E le m e ntop o li s - Revolutionizing urban development through sustainable architecture and environmental consciousness. As the pace of life accelerates, adapting to the fast-paced lifestyle, food delivery has suddenly become the preferred dining option for many young professionals. However, while catering to convenience and time-saving, the environment pays the price: mounting piles of food packaging waste that are challenging to handle. Faced with this ever-increasing waste volume and considering the efficiency and cost of recycling, the conscientiousness of citizens in waste sorting is not a certainty, making the issue of takeaway packaging waste a pressing concern in recent years. Therefore, harnessing the power of gaming becomes a driving force to improve waste management and recycling. Engaging users in the recycling process through an enjoyable gaming experience gives them entertainment and positively impacts the ecological environment.

[ Background Investigation and Analysis ]

[ A Day of Takeaway ]

The takeaway food business is very big nowadays, so the amount of plastic trash generated is huge. Why has the takeaway food business developed so fast? The first reason is the number of Chinese people using smartphones. Nowadays, that's over 700 million users. There is less and less time to prepare food or go to a restaurant. For a busy society, takeaway food is a convenient choice. The price of real estate is rising daily, and the restaurants are getting smaller; the owner will encourage ordering takeaways to serve more customers.

Story inspired by real life * Instant operation

Need chopsticks and straws?

Oh we should order now, or it's too late

Yes plz, thx a lot

All right!

A cup of suymilk and an omelette to takeaway plz :)

Statistics show that China produces at least 60 million boxes a day. If fold and stack the boxes, it would be as high as 340 Mt. Everest. The massive amounts of plastic waste are leading us to an environmental disaster.

What's for lunch today? Pork set and a soup ;) you? I ordered ... WHY so many layers? For keeping the soup from spilling, I guess.

Enjoy

Q ua rry Wo r r i e s a n d M urphy 's La w - HABITAT AQUIFER The wall is a crucial link in the project. The walk around the wall led us to the quarry where the stone for the wall was extracted. Geographically the project covers the Prehen wood with the quarry, a part of the city and the bank of the river Foyle behind the Guildhall. An overlay of the image of quarry wetness subtracts parts of the existing buildings and opens possibilities for new development. Like pulling a stone from the ground, we are quarrying up a new Derry landscape on a new visualisation. The new imaginary landscape of future Derry is an attempt to reflect the city's authenticity by creating a continuing weave of wetness, displacement, present and the distinctive marks of the past and throughout the methodology, combing FABB agency to create Derry's history and future possibilities.

[ Derry Wall Walk ] Derry - the walled city, this definition comes first when you start to study its history, as the wall is one of the primary city peculiarities. It was built in 1618 to defend settlers from England and Scotland that came to the region within the plantation - colonisation of the area organised by London. It is possible to study the wall from different perspectives. Our worries raised the issue: Where did the stone the Wallis built) come from? The answer led us to Prehen, a small city near Derry with an abandoned quarry nearby, where the Derry schist used to be extracted. The attention to the material expanded the frame to the borders of the former quarry, which was included in the research. Data Process Record [ Quarry Walk ]

The journey to the quarry appeared to be an unexpected discovery, as instead of the stone, we were surrounded by trees and plants that occupied the surface of the former quarry. "What shall we study here, and what to focus on? " was our concern. The following location of current research is the abandoned quarry in the Prehen wood. The measurements there were focused on wetness and soil as they compose one of the layers of the research frame. We took a path from the top to the bottom of the quarry, observing the humidity increase, and recorded a video of the walk. Quarry Tre

[ FABB Agencies ] The next challenge was measuring the wetness level and creating a connection between the wall and where the stone Derry schist was extracted from. The attempt to perform the measurement demanded an artistic approach. The video of the walk was projected on the wall through the pictures of the earlymade prints engraved on the transparent boards.

FABB models, based on a fragment of New Visualisation II, are a complex of buildings for various purposes presented at different scales but united by a single landscape and stylistic representation. During the next stage of work on FABB models, we identified the key characteristics to focus on in their further development: landscape layout; dynamic composition; the flow of the landscape; materials interaction.

Wetness drawing process

The images cast a shadow, and only part of the light from the video was saved on the wall; the shadows from the wall prints were considered boundaries, limitations, and restrictions, and the light was the level of wetness in a certain period. We drew the visible part of the light removing the boards one by one.

Re-engravedfilter

As a result, the drawing of the increased wetness through the wall filter was created.

TLML-SEVEN Colleges Drawing

Derry Wall

Derry Wall

[ DERRY UNIVERSITY ] The project links the territory of an abandoned quarry in Prehen wood, the walled part of Derry and a former dock on the river Foyle behind the Guildhall. This route, which we called "A floating stone", reflects displacement as one of the critical events in Derry's history. Its parts represent the moving of the stone from the quarry to the city area for the wall construction and the displacement of people during plantation and later during a vast wave of immigration in the XIXth century. The presented route connects colleges of the future University of Derry.

Quarry Street

The main specialisations of the University are ecology, art and history, as we believe that their cooperation may create vibrant projects of interpreting the past and generate ideas for future Derry. An example of the "Sprouted Stone" college shows the main principles of future design decisions. The workshop building includes a new connection to the wall, the part with the dining area has a prominently rebuilt underground space, and the residential sector develops the previous existing passage.

Prehen Quarry

Image of Mid-term exhibition

Quarry walk Immersive experience

"Sprouted Stone" was also essential to establish an efficient logistic connection between seven colleges and a vivid visual relation that could be read as a single ensemble, although geographically separated. Based on NV3's Derry map, part of the city was removed by quarrying. Zoom out to TLML scale, take the "Sprouted Stone" college as an example; the excavated building materials are ideally reused and assembled into another college "stone lake" located in the quarry; the function is soil ecology research. The displacement of materials makes the quarry, wall and college echo each other regarding process and materials.

Generally, the New visualisation III is an overlay of five maps: 1. The wetness record map 1 ; 2. Drawn shadows of Prehen wood surrounding the quarry ; 3. Historical map of 1856 (that represents buildings and drainage systems of that time); 4. Historical map of 1783 (with a clear separation between the buildings and open spaces, as well as water tanks marked on it); 5. Contempor ary Derry map. An overlay of the image of quarry wetness subtracts parts of the existing buildings and opens possibilities for new development. The added d r awing of Prehen wood's shadows excavates new channels and wells in the city ground. Like pulling a stone out of the earth, we are quarrying up a new Derry l andscape on a new visualisation. An overlay of historical maps opens up the abandoned paths that could be revealed. It also shows the foundations of the former buildings; their traces are read as public recreational areas. The new visualisation in this context proposes the future image of Derry and becomes a source of its f uture development.

[ New Visualisation III / "Sprouted Stone" ] In version II, we marked the boundaries of the sites more clearly. The three buildings are combined with one college that we called "Sprouted Stone". We indexed the NV III drawing and formulated the meanings for different patterns before, so now we tried to follow the general language for our three sites.

"Squirrel hollow"

Overall, the form of new buildings reflects the marks, shapes and lines of the NVIII map. For example, shadows from Prehen wood became a pond and a garden, and red lines representing the foundations of existing buildings became new walking paths. It can be said that we quarried a part of existing buildings to reveal hidden or forgotten spaces.

Fig. Prehen Quarry model, original scale: 1/200

"Sprouted Stone" "Squirrel hollow"

The college building development process on the example of "Hive".

"Squirrel Hollow" is a student housing complex. The historical map shows that Market Street is now built with the passage of the Richmond Centre. The proposition includes constructing existing residential buildings and the shopping centre into student accommodation. The current path through the building is proposed to be kept and turned into a shared library space. The wetness marks and the old buildings' foundation traces from the NV III map become a small park with a garden.

"Cave" “Cave" is a stone workshop. A quarry used to be situated here before, nowadays the area is built with houses and shops. The main intention is to bring back the quarry landscape and use the existing underground space. The space and the building are on the edge of the stone workshop. The transportation of the stone between these spaces can show the process of stone subtraction from the ground and its displacement in the city. The current landscape is proposed to be transformed into a hill. A new walking bridge combines the hill and the wall, creating a direct walking passage.

"Hive" “Hive” is a dining complex where Primark shop is now situated; there used to be a fish market. It is proposed to reveal the fishmarket's old foundation and use its traces as public recreational spaces (street furniture like seats and benches). The marks of the quarry wetness on the map are used to create a water pond for fish. Besides the dining area, there is planned to have a fish market and a fish pond with a showroom.

[ Material performance ] When excavating the land in Derry, it's important to avoid leaving a patchy mining landscape. How can we determine if what remains is a pool or a wetland with blurred boundaries? The city has concrete, drains, and gravel, while the quarry has plants, and the oak surface has a distinct texture. How can these elements communicate and coexist harmoniously?

1

During this stage, I created a material collage to explore how different materials can be combined. Over time, the steel walkway near the pool will change colour, and the sharp stones will become smooth. The contrast between old and new white cement adds depth to the architectural space. The collage process also aids in future material considerations.

[ In the Archaeological Site ] How can we combine the former historical structure, site context, and new geometric texture? What is the significance of the geometric lines blending into the landscape? I used different materials and textures to differentiate blocks with varying meanings in my design. The design aims to uncover the hidden history of previous installations, using columns to represent buildings from the past. The site plan is based on prior building layouts, forming the foundation for the new landscape as an archaeological operation. This approach takes an archaeological method, inspiring visitors to explore beneath the surface and travel back in time through the ghosts of earlier structures. Overall, the physical properties of materials affect our sensory cognition, and our bodies subconsciously respond to the stories conveyed by the space.

Capricci Drawing

The displacement of building materials on a site brings not only the materials themselves but also the essence and significance of the site. Time may be invisible, but we can observe the past, present, and future through other media. Under the influence of the natural environment, plant seeds in the soil will grow and reveal the close connection between the land and what lies beneath the surface.

Looking inside the site after quarrying reveal the old, and Wetness called an "Archaeological Site"

Part of the function of the remodelled area is the fish market, which is also the former use of the site. The introduction of wetness under the framework of the overhead structure brings ecology and greenness to the original artificial structure.

But this piece of dug land is no longer the site after the building was removed, but the reappearance of the quarry. Oak, plants, wetlands, swamps...all make visitors feel like stepping on the bottom of a quarry.

As going deeper into the building, the texture of the columns gradually changes, the surface of the oak tree appears, and the ground becomes more humid, with water flowing under our feet.

[ 02 ] Quarry Worries and Murphy's Law

2022.9 - 2023.8

[ The place after quarrying ] "Now more than ever, nature cannot be separated from culture; to comprehend the interactions between eco-systems, the technosphere and the social and individual Universes of reference, we must learn to think 'transversally'." 1 Indeed, I think urban design needs to be based on this principle. The city's renewal requires a basis rather than simple and rude direct intervention. In the process of modernization, urban expansion is based on continuous superimposition, and the urban space that is becoming saturated has a more precise functional orientation for "building" monomers, blocks, urban roads, etc. Usually, urban renewal is carried out on land parcels, and land parcels are defined based on planning regulations, which are limited by invisible boundaries.

“Mountain, stone, water, building with stone, built in the mountains: our attempts to give to this words an architectural interpretation, transfer its meaning and sensuality guided by our building plan as we were shaping it step by step.” —— Peter Zumthor1

Displacement is the core of this project, stone and wetness are the clues of the project, walking and tracing is the method of reading the site, Murphy's Law is a parallel time axis, similar to the mechanism of invisibility, a large part of it dominates the direction of the design and many times decision. From our worries about city walls and stones, we "take back" the rocks and the city to quarry; from lightly touching and walking on the surface of the town to archaeological excavations in the depths; introducing the soil and wetness of the quarry into the town, and then bringing Take the urban fragments back to quarry; remove some of the existing buildings and cities, and then bring the memory fragment textures to the future. Quarrying is movement and gesture. Quarrying is a process of active excavation, which is abstract and geometric, with completely different textures and lines from the original urban structure. Under this method, the inherent framework of the city will be broken, and other possibilities will replace the gaps in the landscape; that is, future landscape proposals and new urban landscapes will emerge. This unique landscape is continuous, vital, and closely related to the land in the context of the city instead of erasing the urban texture.

Ghosts of old structures Fish market reappearance

The 'archaeological site' is part of the new Derry landscape, where excavated subterranean undercurrents reappear on the land's surface, recreating the stories and sites of the past for a future moment. These archaeological sites can become Derry universities in the future, which is another transfer in both tangible and intangible forms.

- Using architectural space to translate the invisible substance. What is the form of existence? Some matter does exist, but we cannot see it. Architectural space can preserve light, temperature and other things and bring different experiences to people. Therefore, this project mainly studies the impact and operation of material transformation on spatial perception. The site is an abandoned theatre in the Sol neighbourhood in the centre of Madrid, Spain. Two subway lines pass under the site. Old theatres are facing the issue of renovation or demolition. In this bustling context, how can urban renewal be presented, and in what form can it be staged in front of everyone as it used to be?

[ Temporary stage ]

Based on the site's location, equipment connects the above-ground building space and the subway passage to create an architectural space script. A space translation performance brought about by the waste heat of the subway will be staged in the original theatre.

This is a temporary stage for spatial experience, an attempt in the blank period of urban renewal. The architecture script will be staged at a specific period; visitors can follow the prompts given by the space to explore the entire path. Different devices translate related information along the way, such as waste heat from tubes, light and humidity generated by metro passing.

Arc hi - a e o lo gy S ol ut i on - Architecture as a measurement system between human and nature. With the rapid advancement of industrialization, fishing boats have become a convenient means for people to secure more fish. To accommodate this, waveelimination blocks were employed to gradually push back the coastline, and seawalls were hastily constructed. As a result, a fishing harbor emerged, disregarding the surrounding environment. At the opposite end of the fishing port, the remnants of the ancient coastline can still be seen. Below the Fisherman's Wharf, once stood a majestic array of stone weirs revered by the locals. Now, they lie in ruins, scattered along the beach and submerged in sewage-filled waters. The forgotten landscape is silently telling unseen stories.

The outside of the dike is defined as a fragile "SITE", and the inside of the dike is a"NON-SITE".

Non-site

- The coastline is a permanent artificial line. - Stone tidal weir no longer exists, and the place can only be experienced from the current landscape - Using records, documents, and specimens as materials for display .

Branch point Depth mark

The design is divided into three parts: the dockyard with the trench, the walking path and the fishing platform, respectively on both sides of the dike. The beach is like a large archaeological site, containing the invisible past and present. And far away from archaeological sites, there is an exhibition displaying documentaries and abstract experience of non-sites.

[ SITE ] Walking path

000 - 112

The site is an archaeological context. The architectural intervention includes a walking path and a fishing platform, as well as some marks. Taking the sewage ditch as the beginning and adding in the symbolic water circulation device, we established a relatively constant reference coordinate system in the fluctuating intertidal zone. We measured the site characteristics by the "archaeological grids". The spatial atmosphere of the location changes as the distance increases.

The Axis Mechanism represents a symbolic water treatment device with a toilet at the front end. The treated water is conveyed through a transparent pipeline to the other end. A portion of the water is suitable for drinking, while the remainder is discharged into the sea. Archaeological site viewed from the beach [ 33 ]

[ NON-SITE ] Excavating the past history, tourists will visit where the seabed was originally located. The real water level and seabed are displayed inside the trench, and the information of fragile landscapes is recorded , giving people a sense of experience and mental association.

The cross-section of the stone is coloured red at the entrance, which guides people into "non-site" through the recorded entrance. The paving treatment implies that there is a grid system.

The dock is a place for tool repairing, now as the site of memory restoration. Inside and outside of the façade of the dock are fishermen and visitors. The façade is composed of big and small stones, which is also how the stone tidal weir was constructed.

Section of NON-SITE

The stones were neatly arranged on the wall of the trench. A floating rock in the hollow space is displayed as an exhibit with a skylight.

The archeology ditch is like a museum exhibition space. “Non-site" tells the story of stone tidal weir, which raises people's awareness of site. Enter the trench and go down to the seabed. The inner wall of the track is made of smooth steel to reflect the sea level. The space is a metaphor for the interior of the cabin. Standing on the dry sand and looking through the glass, one can see the natural water level, seabed, and a red calibration column. There are lines on the glass which can accurately read the water level.

Bac5 , 2017.9 - 2018.5

Archi-aeology solution

1. The branched wooden path deviates from the grid system, and in the semi-enclosed space, visitors can look out to the ocean from partial open frames. 2. The end of the straight red steel path is a drinking water device, and the water comes from the sewage at the beginning.

3. Climbing and looking around the entire sea area: the embankment, stone tidal weir, sea level, the sewage treatment plant, and finally sit down on the platform . 4. The installation is the intersection of the stone tidal weir ruins and the existing heart-shaped stone tidal weir. Its accessibility is affected by tides. 5. The fishing platform is a marked location at a macro level , the hanging red stone also allows the angler to notice the micro-ecology in the stone tidal weir at his feet: fish, shrimp, seaweed and oysters.

6. The non-site is presented in the form of a landscape, and the entrance image leads the visitor to enter: the arc-shaped opening, the alert color of orange, and the slightly raised grass slope.

Other projects

- Some from architecture, some from daily life. Design comes from the inspiration of life, and the thinking of architecture is integrated into life. The design inspiration comes from life, integrating architectural design into everyday living. I also enjoy incorporating subtle elements of amusement into the works. In this part, I will show you with some other works. They consist primarily of three parts: projects in various stages of development, graphic representations, and handcrafted models.
