FOR JUNE 2023

By the time you read this you should have received your ballot for the Annual Members Meeting that will be held on Saturday, June 17, 2023, in the Community Center from 9 AM – 1PM with the results announced at 4 pm.

This meeting DOES NOT include voting for new Board members as that will occur in June 2024.

This meeting DOES INCLUDE voting on 4 proposals, which if adopted, will have the following effect.

1) Members not in good standing will no longer be able to vote in the future elections of officers (President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer).

2) The Board will continue to have monthly open meetings and not have to schedule two additional Friday evening meetings.

3) Members in good standing will be able to vote in person, by proxy, or by absentee vote in all future POA elections.

4) Three unbuildable parcels of land will be transferred to the City of DH to help improve drainage.

PROXY VOTING IN THE JUNE 17, 2023, MEETING. IMPORTANT!!!! READ CAREFULLY!

Presently the only way a property owner can vote in the upcoming meeting is either in person or by proxy since there’s no voting for Board members during this meeting. This requirement is in our governing documents. If you cannot attend in person to vote, you can vote by proxy. You can give your proxy to any member who is in good standing. To make it easier to use a proxy, you can complete your ballot and check off the name of either Bill Blackwood or Ronnie Lafontaine. Both names are on the ballot and both will vote to approve the four suggested changes. After completing your ballot and checking off either name or listing the name of a member in good standing who will be your proxy, you MUST mail your ballot using the enclosed envelope to the auditing firm supervising the election or deposit your proxy forms in the lock box located in the POA Administration office no later than 4:30 pm on June 16, 2023. Time is required to verify the information on the submitted proxy forms.

YOU CANNOT JUST

SHOW UP AT THE MEET-

ING AND SUBMIT PROXY VOTES!

The information is also on the POA’s website.

Your vote is important so that we can ensure a quorum for the meeting. I suggest that, if you do not plan to attend the voting meeting between 9 am – 1 pm on Saturday, June 17, 2023, you complete your proxy form immediately and mail it to the auditing firm using the self-addressed stamped envelope included in the election packet you received.

REMINDER—ONLY MEMBERS IN GOOD STANDING CAN VOTE IN THIS ELECTION!!

The results of the voting will be published on the POA’s social media sites as soon as possible after conclusion of the voting.

Section 7 in the 1970 POA Charter included “…shall vest each member the right to vote in the election of officers…” Section 3.7 of the POA bylaws states that only members in good standing can vote.

Because of the wording in Section 7, members not in good standing have been allowed to vote for Officers only. The Board’s position is that members not in good standing should NOT be able to vote and

have an effect on the outcome of any POA elections.

To solve this discrepancy, the Board has proposed a motion for the Annual Members Meeting on June 17, 2023, to remove the sentence includ-

ed in Section 7 in the Charter as noted above. If approved, only members in good stand-

MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS

THE CLUB AT DIAMONDHEAD AND PROPERTY OWNER’S ASSOCIATION, INC.

April 17, 2023

A meeting of the Board was held at 5000 Diamondhead Circle, Diamondhead Mississippi. President Knobloch chaired the meeting and called it to order at 6:00 P.M.

Continued from Page 1 ing will be eligible to vote in all future POA elections.

Section 5.5 of the bylaws reads “… the Board shall hold an open meeting on the third Friday of each March and October…”

ALL regularly scheduled monthly meetings are presently open to the public, streamed live, and recorded for later viewing. There’s no need to hold these two meetings on Friday evenings.

To solve this discrepancy, the Board has proposed a motion for the Annual Members Meeting on June 17, 2023, that replaces the original sentence with “All regularly scheduled monthly Board meetings will be held on the third Monday of the month and open to the public. Monthly meeting dates can be moved due to extenuating circumstances.” If approved, monthly meetings on Friday evenings in March and October will not

be required.

Section 3.7 of the bylaws reads “… Corporate action shall be determined by a majority of the membership present and/or by proxy at a meeting at which a quorum is present.”

This means that in the Annual Members Meeting on the third Saturday in June, a member must actually attend the meeting to vote or have given his proxy to a member in good standing who must attend the meeting to vote his/her proxy.

In the opinion of the Board, that places undue attendance requirements on property owners who want to vote.

To solve this discrepancy, the Board has proposed a motion at the Annual members Meeting on June 17, to change this sentence to “Absentee voting shall be permitted in all voting of the membership in Corporate actions and/or elections of POA officers and directors.”

If approved, this would not go into effect until after the June 17, 2023, Annual Members Meeting.

The POA owns three parcels of land which can help solve some drainage issues. The parcels are 1) the “Duck Pond” on Gex Drive 2) the large detention pond on Kalipekona Way and 3) the lot on Mahalo Hui Drive which contains the drainage ditch that drains most of Glen Eagle. The POA will transfer the ownership of these three parcels of land to the City at no cost to the POA. The City will pay for any costs associated with this transfer. If approved, drainage will be improved in the three areas.

You may have seen that Forbes magazine recently named Diamondhead as one of the four best municipalities to travel to on the MS. Gulf Coast. The award cited DH as having one of the best golf scenes in the area as well as an expanding restaurant scene in our growing Coast city.

With warmer weather, the patio area outside Latitude 30 is a good location to meet with friends to enjoy a beverage and companionship.

The women of Olympus, many wearing beautiful hats or fascinators, gathered at Saint Thomas Episcopal Church on March 14th to enjoy the Krewe’s third annual Royal Queen’s Tea. Queen Hera XV JoAnn Ponthier and Aphrodite Angela Griffey were honored at this elegant event hosted by: Tina Finley, Stephanie Jensen, Beryl Laird, Kathryn Larsen, Betty Maxwell, Candy Motz, Sandy Noon, Jane Roche, Janet Snemyr, and Monique Sullivan. In the spirit of the event, Hostesses wore bright spring dresses, matching white “fascinator” hats, white lacy gloves, and their signature pin of a lady wearing a lacy hat. Guests were handed champagne flutes as they arrived. Moderator Beryl Laird presented a Champagne toast to the Queen, Aphrodite, and the guests.

breathtaking tea!

The wonderful food was right out of Ye Olde Tea Shoppe in England! Assorted finger sandwiches, scones, pastry shells with lemon curd, biscuits with butter and jellies, Macaroons, sugared pecans, grapes, and a variety of Earl Grey teas were enjoyed by all.

Moderator Beryl Laird presented Queen JoAnn Ponthier with a durable canvas tote featuring a crown motif, as well as a lovely white square ceramic serving plate with a matching crown pattern. Sadly, our lovely Aphrodite Angela Griffey was unable to attend at the last minute. However, her gift was a precious teacup that looked like “Chip” from Beauty and the Beast.

Congratulations again to 2023 Queen JoAnn Ponthier and Aphrodite Angela Griffey. Everyone looks forward to this lovely tea, and next year will be no different.

On Friday, May 12th Newcomers Club celebrated their last event of the season with a country/cowgirl inspired theme, “Happy Trails to You”. May’s luncheon is always a little bittersweet for the gals, but the group has lots to look forward to in September! A new board will be taking over and making some fun changes. The cowgirl style soiree also happened to fall on long time member, Lola Mullinix’s, 91st birthday, and members enjoyed Ms. Lola’s cake along with an end of the year champagne and wine treat. Shirley Dorsey said about the party, “I felt like it was the last day of school”, and this author couldn’t have expressed it any better.

The group’s themed luncheons are held September through May on the second Friday of each month. So, if you are interested in having fun join the Newcomers Club! To reserve a seat, please make reservations on or before the Monday prior

High School Tennis Update

Congratulations to the the OLA Crescent and St. Stanislaus Rock-a-chaw tennis team (a combined co-ed team) who won the 2023 Class 3A State Championship.

The Hancock Hawks tennis team also practices at the club and have their home matches here. They have had a great turn out and a much larger team this season. Congratulations to all these talented student-athletes!!

Did you know?

Our courts at the Tennis Club are some of the finest, state of the art, hydra-clay courts in the state. We are so lucky to have them for our daily play! Did you know that clay courts are slightly easier on the human body, as the surface absorbs more shock. The surface also allows players to slide into place rather than coming to a complete stop, conserving some of our energy. The French Open is the only Grand Slam that uses a clay court. (BTW, the French Open will be played May 28- June 11 this year).

Maintenance of these courts is a daily effort. We can each help keep these courts in top form by brushing the court after play and cleaning the lines. Thanks for helping to keep these courts so nice for play!

WOW!!! Our group collected over 130 cans of soup for the March for Mayor’s can food drive benefitting the food pantries on the coast. Thank you for all who donated cans for this worthy effort. I sent a picture of the cans in my car if you want to include that.

This month at The Tennis Club:

If you would like a social activity added to the calendar, please give Matt or Donna a call to discuss. We are always looking for new and fun ways to get folks on the courts!

Help keep our golf courses beautiful! When parking your golf carts next to tee boxes and greens please keep all four tires on the cart path. This prevents unnecessary wear and tear on the edges of the cart path. Please be sure to fix two ball marks and fill two divots every hole... any two will do! It’s your golf course so let’s take care of it! We look forward to seeing you “PLAY MORE GOLF.” Let’s all get out and enjoy our golf courses and practice facilities. As always, let us know how we can help.

Spring has finally arrived at Diamondhead. Hurray!! We actually managed to play golf each of the Tuesdays in April. The Nines are very happy to have added several new faces to our group — some are seasoned golfers, and some are new at the game. In the Nines all are welcome. As someone once said, “the more, the merrier.”

Our usual Trophy Day was held on Tuesday, April 4th, and was played on the Front 9 of the Cardinal course. Twenty-four members came out to play plus three gals followed the field. (Translation: these gals played after the competitive group in order to establish their handicaps for future competition or played just or fun and were not in the day’s competition.). Due to the number of gals playing, we were able to field four flights. And the April Trophy Day winners were: Flight 1 winners -

1st Place =Tammy Lippon, 2nd Place = Toni Rossol and 3rd Place = Judy Tauzin. In Flight 2 the winners were: 1st Place = Brigitte Becker, 2nd Place = Carroll Gothie and 3rd Place = Betty Perry. Flight 3 winners -

1st Place = Margaret Sherwood,

Brigitte Becker took the honors in Flight 2, Margaret Sherwood won 1st Place in Flight 3 and Sue Hebert in Flight 4. The Longest Drive winners are Flight 1 = Georgeann Lexicon, Flight 2 = LaDonna Brown, Flight 3 = Margaret Sherwood and Flight 4 = Nancy Barker. LaDonna Brown also scored a Birdie on Hole #2. Good job gals!

On the second Tuesday of this month, we played a game called Add Par 3s and 5s on the Front Nine Holes of the Pine. Of note is the fact that one of our newer members, Nancy Barker, scored a 54 today. Very notable for someone relatively new at the game. Way to go Nancy! In addition, Pattie Blackwood scored, not one but, two Chip-Ins. One on Hole #5 and another on Hole #7. We played three member teams with Judi Brannan serving as a Blind member on the team that had only two players. Now, for the winners. 1st Place Team included Judith Brannan, Judy Lakota and Ruthie O’Neill. 2nd Place Team was made up of Sylvia Corban, Marilyn Galus and Dinah Knobloch. And, 3rd Place Team was composed of Mary Craig Murray, Toni Rossol and Pat VanDervort. During this round we also gave awards to Closest-to-the-Pin. Sue Hebert took these honors on Hole

The final Tuesday in the month, April 25th, only 10 players turned out to try their luck at a Scramble format. The winning teams were as follows: 1st Place Team = Cathy Gesell, Therese Mauterer and Pauline Singer while the 2nd Place Team = Tracey Garriga, Ruthie O’Neill and Pat VanDervort. No Chip-Ins or Birdies were scored during this round.

On some occasions several of us venture off to play on neighboring courses. Such an event is scheduled for Wednesday, May 10th at Windance Golf Course. Also keep watch for our annual Scotch Doubles Game to be held next month. It is always a fun day. Stay tuned for more of our adventures and keep hitting them long and straight.

Diamondhead Aviator -- progress is happening

The improvements keep happening at the airport. We now have Titan’s sign mounted and the fuel station has been painted to match. It looks fantastic. And the ability to reel up the fuel hose again has gone a long way in keeping the hose in good condition. And we still have one of the lowest fuel prices in the area, contributing to increased fuel sales by transient aircraft.

Proper Trim Techniques

Look at the trim wheel on most airplanes and what do you see? They’re labeled Nose Up-Nose Down. No wonder so many people get the wrong idea. They even call it PITCH TRIM. Reading through the FAA’s Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge, we see references like, ‘If the pilot needs to exert constant back pressure on a control column, the need for noseup trim is indicated’.

When a student first starts flying, it seems the plane is con-

stantly doing something unintended. When leveling out, the plane may want to descend, or it may want to climb. Then as airspeed increases, it wants to do something completely different. The student thinks, ‘I trimmed nose up when the nose wanted to go down and now it wants to go up’. And so continues the struggle, with the student continuing to chase the trim and not understanding why.

Well, I’m here to tell you we’ve been teaching it wrong for

years. It’s not a pitch trim. It’s an airspeed trim. Read on and I’ll explain.

What is that trim wheel doing anyway?

There are three types of trim tab on the average general aviation airplane. Most have the ground adjustable, manual trim tab which is nothing more than a piece of sheet metal that gets bent to provide trim in cruise. We usually see this on the rudder.

The other two types are servo and anti-servo trim tabs. Nearly all planes will have one of these depending on the design and the FAA loves to fill their tests with questions about differences between the two. The good news is, from an operational standpoint, it really doesn’t matter which one you have since that trim wheel or crank are manipulated in the same way for both.

A New Approach

If you remember your training in aircraft stability, an aircraft that exhibits positive dynamic stability will tend to

return to its trimmed condition after a few oscillations. While in level, cruise flight, pulling back on the yoke makes the plane climb. While climbing, the airspeed decreases. Releasing the controls, the nose drops, the plane starts to descend, airspeed increases, the nose comes back up, speed slows, nose drops, and on and on. Each oscillation a bit smaller until you stabilize at level flight and the same airspeed you started with.

That elevator trim tab is only affected by the speed of the air over it. If you reduce power, the aircraft will start to descend and after a few oscillations, will stabilize in a descent at the same airspeed. Increase power and you’ll see a climb at that same speed. Want to slow from 150 knots to 90? Power back, maintain altitude with pitch and as you slow to 90 knots, adjust trim to maintain altitude at the new speed.

Now I’m sure this information is nothing new to many of you. Will this information funda-

mentally change the way most of us fly? Not at all. Just like many learned skills, we developed a feel for it and it soon became second nature even if we didn’t completely understand the mechanics behind it. But for new pilots, thinking of pitch trim as an airspeed trim can help them gain understanding sooner.
